The Same Old Same Old

N February 2013 i.e. 11 years ago I roadtested a Renault Twizzy for my Broad Sheep editorial and I told the car manufacturers ‘They should be making something cheap and light not just trying to copy petrol cars. They should stop trying to make cars that can do 120mph and concentrate on light vehicles that can take you shopping or get you to the nearest train station.’ So here we are in 2024 and I feel bound to dish out exactly the same advice.

I’m sure lots of the car owning public have come to believe that it is their inalienable right to cruise around the roads in a fat overpowered 4x4 but something is going to have to give. What we need is a return to the 1950’s when both sides of the Channel governments went out of their way to make it cheap and easy to build and sell Bubble Cars! The German Messerschmitt’s and BMWs were really tasty, the British Bond Minicar not so great. My pal at college had one and it was like driving a drunken wheelbarrow with a moped engine.

One of the problems is Tesla. By being first out of the blocks with a decent charging infrastructure and worldwide sales, they have sort of set the benchmark for their competitors. But their luxurious two-ton monster (their top of the range model S Plaid does 200mph and 0-60mph in 2 seconds!!) is exactly what we don’t need either in a London traffic jam, or in a Welsh 20mph village zone. The ‘stick to petrol brigade’ point out with some justification that the energy to build and charge one these hippos makes any claims of environmental friendliness absurd. But pretty much all the other manufacturers are heading off down

the same route i.e. building heavyweight luxury SUVs.

So to get back to the much-maligned Twizzy, yes it had no side windows, rattled and was low on comfort but it was a step in the right direction. Renault discontinued it in 2020 but the latest incarnation the Mobalize Duo is now available in Europe and heading this way. Like our very own, local car manufacturer the fabulous, hydrogen powered, Riversimple the Renault will not be for sale, but you will lease it for 3 months at a time. However what the country needs more than anything is an integrated coherent transport policy and that’s going to involve re-nationalizing the railways and quite possibly the buses, so that genuinely environmentally friendly, personnel transport solutions, become a real possibility. It probably has not escaped your notice that the doomy predictions about climate change are racing towards us faster than a Tesla model S Plaid and that clearing the way for sensible alternatives to fossil fuels, cleaning up our cities and unjamming our roads is a major priority.

My recommendation - Cheap, reliable buses and trains. Hydrogen powered buses and trucks. Small, electric, micro cars, electric bikes and scooters for personnel use. Walking, cycling and horses for the rest of us except two massive Rolls Royce’s for King Charles and Elton John.

That being said, I am pretty amazed at the speed in which people have taken to Electric bikes. Back in 2005 when I first started the ‘Tour De Presteigne electric bike rally’ and started banging on about them, all the time, if you so much as saw another one it would lead to scenes of unbridled joy and celebration. Now, they are as common as muck! Lets hope that in another 11 years time (a) I won’t still be dishing out the same advice on E.V.s and (b) I won’t still be writing these bleeding editorials.

That is the path of righteousness, Tho’ after it but few enquires.”

Thomas the Rhymer’s ballad projects a bygone morality onto the countryside just as Pilgrim’s Progress overlays a Snakes and Ladders sermon of Sin and Virtue onto England’s green and pleasant contours. On the other side of my home valley I think I can see the Slough of Despond near Prue’s farm, and a steep Hill of Difficulty with a possibly “strait” Wicket Gate across the path of righteousness. The glow of the sunset near the top of the overgrown lane seems to suggest that the Heavenly City lies beyond yet another tantalisingly recessive Welsh horizon. Everything becomes metaphor.

That’s probably the B4374 that weaves its way in and out of Wales beside the Teme - the Dark One - between Bunyan’s Beacons of Sin, Knighton and Newtown, skirting the hill opposite that’s shaped like a pregnant woman. This morning a queue of light blue s/w base series 2 Land Rovers coupled to identical Ifor Williams trailers is travelling westward towards the moors trailing identical blue smoke from identical exhausts. Today is Market Day and the Cattle Auction which alternates Wednesdays and Thursdays between Sodom and Gomorrah, Newtown and Knighton. Farmers spend their profits in the pub, while under the pale moon the midnight folk loiter in Temptation Alley. And then on Saturday they and their wives go shopping at Vanity Fair in fancy Ludlow .

Thomas the Rhymer dreamt that he kissed the Queen of the Fairies on a midsummer’s night after the fair and had to bed her for seven years and a day in Fairyland among her courtier spirits, the elves of hills, brooks, and groves. On his return to the real world he was deemed to be a prophet who, poor chap, having been seduced by his nature-wife Titania, was peculiarly unable to tell a lie. The poem hints at the nostalgia of the old people, of the fading Celts and the mythical wandering byways of bygone beliefs only visible to the inner eye, overgrown now with brambles and fern and daffodils, and the mystification of dusky women. Were the path truly discoverable, the third way across the entangled moor and the dead marshes, the ferny brae and bog, o’er vales and hills and through the intermingled layers of wizards’ memories, it would lead to Wild Edric

and his knights, rearguard Middle Earth heroes led by a once and future Churchill sleeping the ages out in Wales’ comprehensive cave and pothole system until they are called to defend the Celtic Realm One Last Time, like Tolkien’s Army of the Dead. They do say there is an entrance in the cliffs above Crickhowell, visible only to the blind and the drunk. In their mead-halls the Welsh speak a liquid, overflowing, evasive language which has lent no words to the tall Norman invaders’ commanding tongue. It blends fact and fantasy, Merthyr and Mordor, in bardic hymns of praise and regret that are suspended in nonlinear time, their sing-song richness made to mesmerise. It pictures the Welsh tribes chanting battle cries of blood and gold as Llewellyn and his carnival of warriors charge downhill with their enemies’ skulls braided into their prancing ponies’ manes, clattering like castanets, filling the hearts of their enemies with dread, like at the Little Big Horn or the Battle of Pilleth 1402, just over the hill though now it is only rugby, Dylan Thomas, Richard Burton and Michael Sheen inhabit the tradition. Beyond the caves is Annwn, or Fairyland, the retreat of Merlin, also of Queen Guinevere, the Arthurian Hollywood mash-up who 1500 years ago was raised up the road at Knucklas Castle just on this side of reality before she departs into myth as a full-grown legend, carrying with her everyone’s favourite virtues and vices. The castle once surveyed the western end of the vast array of lakes and misty marshes that lay between Beguildy and Downton, before the English came and drained its magicand its standing lakes.

Guinevere, aka Jennifer, is My Fey Lady, our local celebrity. But Beware! The uncertainty behind her spell will set you against yourself. Beware the elusive mystique, the pre-Raphaelite tension, the smoke in the voice, the silver screen, beware the bonny road and the path of wickedness and La belle dame sans merci, beware the labyrinth of unrequited yearning, beware falling into the quicksand you have made of your lust. Behind the gossamer, the make-up and the artful pictured facade of glamour that mirrors our yearning, Guinevere, poor thing, like Marilyn Monroe is as mystified as King Arthur, Sir Lancelot and me.

FREUD’S LAST SESSION (15) – 110 MINS

Adapted by Mark St Germain from his own Broadway play, director Matthew Brown (THE MAN WHO KNEW INFINITY) broadens the central premise of the atheist philosopher (Anthony Hopkins) being visited by arch, if newly committed evangelist and author, C.S. Lewis (Matthew Goode, THE IMITATION GAME) who seeks to convince him that God exists. This they entertainingly accomplish by throwing in Freud’s complex relationship with his loving daughter, Anna, (renowned German actress, Liv Lisa Friel), flashbacks to his troubled childhood and ill-advised romances, and basing the film in a period-perfect London where Freud fled to from Vienna as WW2 loomed, which in one suitably ironic scene has them all sheltering in a church as air-raid sirens wail. Compelling us to delve deeply into our own beliefs, or lack thereof, the dialogue crackles with both wit and counterpoint and it’s fascinating to see Hopkins clearly warranting his ongoing, late-career renaissance.

BEFORE Mr Pernickety launches into a heartening story of great success in a tough time for rural victuallers, he is sad to note that one of Herefordshire’s finest pub landlords is about to hang up his tap mallet after more than 50 years of looking after and pulling pints of ale at The Cross Keys in Withington – a real publican who is a kind of local human Google, who knows everyone in his parish, what they can – or can’t – do, sometimes even where they are when no one can find them. Mr P has seen him in many roles: hosting the pub cricket XI, skittle matches, ferret races, rat-hunts and singing sessions. His is one of the most authentic ale houses still to be found in the region. The pub is now for sale, but without its landlord, it’s unlikely to retain its specialness.

As it happens there are a few authentic feeling parlour pubs that have sprung up in Ludlow. The first of them, founded by visionary pub enthusiast, John Saxon, was The Dog Hangs Well which was created in the former offices of his regrettably deceased Ludlow Ledger, in a few rooms of a large Georgian house in Corve Street; only a plain glass lamp identifies it. There’s no television, no beastly music, no using mobile phones – a perfect environment for spontaneous communication between strangers, where the cut and thrust of witty repartee is encouraged, if not always achieved. That was the case in a second pub opened by Saxon - a little recreated Victorian gem in the High Street, the Blood Bay. It was sold last year to a man from Gloucester who disappointingly has none of the qualities of the Landlord of The Cross Keys, and has imported an indifferent beer from Stroud, instead of serving any of the wonderful local ales. As a result, the standard of conversation in this charming little bar has deteriorated, and more interesting punters are now to be found at The Old Street Tavern, another recreated parlour pub which usually has some kind of craic going. It is distinguished by a good choice of beers and a fine hanging sign of Prince Rupert painted by a man who has had several works in the National Portrait Gallery (including Seamus Heaney and the Liverpool Poets).

There are also decent beers being served at the subject of this month’s food review, The Tally Ho Inn at Bouldon. As soon as Mr Pernickety and his Lovely Companion walked into the tidy little pub, his spirits rose. He last reviewed the place in March 2013 (www. broadsheep.com), shortly after it had been saved from extinction by two public-spirited men – one a skilled interior designer – who’d spotted the potential in this badly run-down building. They revived it well. The place had been Farrowed and Balled, or possibly Edward Bulmered in soft subtle hues and hung with a host of intriguing and tasteful pictures and knick-knackery that would please anyone but the basest of ale-swillers. They installed a good chef and manager; Mr P reviewed it well and the place soon became a favourite haunt. But running the

pub had become too onerous for the busy owners and they let the place to an unsophisticated tenant who had no comprehension of what they had originally achieved. During that dark time, Mr P was deeply distressed to arrive and find vinegar bottles and large squishy plastic tomatoes on the tables amid the aroma of an old greasy spoon. Naturally no one traipsed to the remote crannies of the Corvedale for that kind of thing and the regime came to an inevitable end.

Miraculously, it was agreed that the highly proficient operators of the village-owned Pheasant at Neenton would take on the running of the pub. The Pheasant already had a good, well-established chef, Martin Harrison and team, and this has been successfully deployed to the Tally Ho. The inside has had a skilful facelift, gently lit in a restful shade of green, with unpretentious rustic tables and chairs. Wisely understanding a pub’s true purpose, there is still a good bar for local drinkers, with delicious snacks and a garden with super views. Mr P was encouraged as soon as he saw the changes but it was only when his food arrived that he was sure just how good this revitalized Tally Ho was. He wasn’t eating just pub grub; his Slow-roasted Pork Belly, Black Pudding Croquette, Creamed Leeks’ spinach and cider sauce was a fine, thoughtfully conceived dish of great depth and subtlety, that got Mr P guessing how each taste and texture had been achieved. The LC felt just the same about her Chicken Schnitzel, Cabbage, Mushroom sauce, garlic butter and Matchstick Potatoes. She said the bird was pleasingly moist, and worked unexpectedly well with the sauce and cabbage, Mr Pernickety snaffled a delicious chunk of the chicken. He and the LC grinned at one another fatuously, so surprised and elated were they by the inspiring tastiness of the dishes they’d been served. After sharing a wicked Fried Bread’n’Butter pudding with Raspberry Ripple ice-cream, they are excited by the idea of eating there again and again. Tally Ho, so to speak. Mr Pernickety

Taking the train to Italy – in the wake of an eco-warrior

IN April I carried out an experiment. The idea was to go to Italy, without flying. I concede at once that it was hardly difficult or ambitious. But, I thought, if the Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg can get to North America by thumbing a lift on a yacht, surely I ought to be able to get to Italy overland.

My target area was the north-west, including Lake Como and various towns in Tuscany. If greenhouse gas emissions had not been an issue, the obvious way of going would have been to catch a flight to Pisa. From there you can get to the seaside, or to several attractive historic towns, by train, within two or three hours.

I realised that the Eurostar train from London would have to be treated as a discreet section. I was advised to contact a travel agency in Wales, but when they tried to route me through Paris, I thought again. From trips to Paris 30 or 40 years ago, I recalled that one would need to negotiate the Gare du Nord and then cross Paris to get to one’s onward station. I didn’t fancy that, with all my luggage.

Irrationally, I recalled the opening sequences of a Jacques Tati film I had seen back in the 60s, Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday. These scenes showed hundreds of holidaymakers carrying cases, tennis rackets and fishing nets, and rushing chaotically from one platform to another on a curving station, as they tried to guess at which platform their train to the coast was going to pull up.

As far as I knew there was nothing in Paris like St Pancras in London, where you can step off a main line train and be on a tube train, or a fast train heading north or west out of the capital within a few minutes. I had memories of stressful journeys across Paris, so I decided in favour of the Brussels route.

The first big mistake I made was to take too much luggage. I put everything I thought I needed in a (very) large wheely bag. Almost as soon as I set off, I regretted the weight of that bag. Nowhere did this hit home more painfully than at the train station in the town of Como, where the approach to the station platforms involves climbing several hundred steps!

I realised, too late in the day, that I could have survived with a much smaller weekend wheely case maybe one third of the size, as long as I washed some clothes every few days. Another unexpected challenge related to the actual train tickets.

Before departing to Brussels, I was in some doubt about whether I could prove I had bought tickets for all the sectors on my route. It was a shock to learn that you can’t just get a return ticket to Como or Lucca and then print it on a single piece of paper. Nowadays anything to do with train tickets in Europe seems to incur an

invitation to download an App!

I am rather unsure what an App is or how you use it, if you have been unlucky enough to be supplied with it. My printer at home had not been seen since I moved house, two or three weeks before setting off. I was therefore reliant on sheets of A4 paper, which my Presteigne friends, G and A had kindly let me print off at their place.

So, by the time I set off, I had a bulging folder full of online train tickets and hotel bookings. I also had a lingering feeling that some vital part of the journey had been missed out.

During the journey I began to feel more and more like a grumpy old man. I repeatedly reflected that things were much better in my day, that is to say, when I used to head off to Europe in the 1970s and 80s. In those days there were compartments with 6 bunks, called couchettes, so that you could get something resembling a night’s sleep en route.

How on earth can it take three days and two nights to travel to a country only a few hundred miles away? To avoid sitting up all night, I had to book a room in Brussels, and another in Italy, on both the outbound and return legs. Maybe I should have just found a travel agent. But that is where I started!

Readers who hate planes and airports may be pleased to learn that, despite my complaints and caveats above, I had an excellent trip to Italy with my dear friend Kathleen, and that I would recommend training through Europe as a great alternative to the miseries of jet travel.

The trains in Italy seem to run on time, which one of my friends attributes to the legacy of Mussolini. The only cancellations or breakdowns took place in Switzerland and - guess where - England & Wales! Hopefully, in modern times, we can have reliable trains without dictatorship, mayhem and mass murder.
