50 Ways To Leave Your Lover

I

F you are deeply depressed by the war in Ukraine, Covid, and the Climate Crisis then what you probably need is a light-hearted editorial to take your mind off things. Here is one idea, you could just slide off into the wilderness and forget about everything. I am reading an extraordinary book called The Sheltering Desert written in 1957 by Henno Martin. It tells the true tale of Henno his friend Hermann and their dog Otto who lived in S. Africa and who very clearly saw the approaching signs of World War 2 and as German geologists who were likely to be interned they decided to head out into The Namibian Desert and hang out till it was all over. They managed to stay hidden for two and a half years living a precarious, but sometimes-joyful existence and always wondering where the next water source was and constantly thinking about food and what they could trap or shoot. Every now and then they listened to a radio running off their hidden truck’s battery to monitor how bad things were in Europe. Eventually Hermann got sick and the authorities caught up with them but I won’t spoil the whole story for you. I realize that hiding out on the Brecon Beacons is not quite the same but at least you won’t have any problem finding water. Meanwhile all I can offer you as a diversion is some violent arguments about the merits of various Long Playing Records. I recently received, along with all the other garbage that Facebook sends me everyday, a list of the 50 best albums of 1972 now all celebrating their 50th birthday and pretty damn impressive it was too. Anyway here is my list of 20 or so brilliant 50-year-old albums that I would have been listening to at the time and which I’d happily listen to again tomorrow (except of course Van the Man – grumpy old git and possibly Bryan Ferry hmmm). Neil Young 1972

Neil Young 2022

And here is a sub list for all those whining know-alls and Dave Luke (big Stephen Stills fan) who will be going “Oi you can’t possibly leave out Nick Drake he was a genius” Stephen Stills MANASSAS. Paul Simon PAUL SIMON. Cat Stevens CATCH BULL AT FOUR. Todd Rundgren SOMETHING/ ANYTHING? Elton John HONKY CHATEAU. Jethro Tull THICK AS A BRICK. T Rex THE SLIDER. Chicago CHICAGO V. Mott the Hoople ALL THE YOUNG DUDES. Pete Townshend WHO CAME FIRST. War THE WORLD IS A GHETTO. Joni Mitchell FOR THE ROSES. Rod Stewart NEVER A DULL MOMENT. Alice Cooper SCHOOL’S OUT. The Allman Brothers Band EAT A PEACH. Nick Drake PINK MOON. Deep Purple MACHINE HEAD. Pink Floyd OBSCURED BY CLOUDS. The Doobie Brothers TOULOUSE STREET. The Allman Brothers EAT A PEACH. Yes CLOSE TO THE EDGE. Okay are you happy now? I have purposely left out all the stuff on the list which I really have no interest in like, Uriah Heap, Grand Funk Railroad, Blue Oyster Cult, The Raspberries and unfortunately the Jazzbos, C&W fans and Folkies will have to make their own list. Could you make a similar list for say 2022? Of course you could. Would you still be happy to sit and listen to it in 50 years time???? Answers on a postcard - as they used to say. hugh’s bit

Our Task Ben Mawer

The Wanderer might be the Knight in Bergman’s The Seventh Seal or Clint Eastwood or Toshiro Mifune in one of their many lone wolf Western or Samurai roles. The ruins of Roman Bath are sometimes quoted as being the subject of the second piece. The Wanderer: “There is now no-one left who I trust with my innermost thoughts, so I keep them hidden, in my spirit-chest, in my treasure-chamber. No-one can resist the ways of fate, and if I allow my mind to dwell on sorrow it will obstruct my path. I am often homesick and melancholy, an exile, far from my kinsmen, but I bind my inmost thoughts round with fetters and chains, so that I can continue my journey, hoping that one day I will be able to return and declare myself openly.” The Ruin: Originally “Wrætlic is þes wealstan, wyrde gebræcon ........” These great stone walls stood firm, until the fates cast them down, smashing the pavements below. Year by year these works of the Giants moulder away. The rafters are snapped off, the roofs torn open, the towers are in ruins; the gateway is white with the frost that picks the mortar from between the stones; the roof-tiles lie broken where they fall and age undermines the foundations. The master builders lie gripped in the earth, held fast in their graves until a hundred generations shall pass.

If we, who have seen war With disillusioned eyes, Bereft of all its glamour And stripped of all the lies And sentimental dope The politicians told us And all the mass-hysteria The daily papers sold us, Cannot out of misery A better system found, Then we’d be better with our comrades, So cold beneath the ground.

This high wall, stained with rust and grey with lichen, witnessed one reign after another, and withstood the storms, but now the gateway has fallen. Still the walls endure the winds (burnt gaps).... cut down.... fierce and sharp ...... they shone.... the craftsmanship of the ancient work ..... turned back to crusts of mud..... spirit .. A mason used his skills to encircle the walls with iron bands; his clever design bound them together, and bright were the halls, many the bathing pools. The great gable walls resounded to the sound of the multitude feasting in the banqueting halls, until mighty Fate intervened. Ben Mawer

Ben Mawer fought in the Far East during the Second World War before being captured by the Japanese and moved to their prison camps in Siam (now Thailand). His poem was amongst his papers after his death in the early 1980s and has never been published. Three generations of the author’s descendants have lived in and around Bishop’s Castle for many decades. Two pieces from other wars follow Our Task, translated from the thousand year old Exeter Book, made of parchment and leather. Some of the phrases in The Ruin have been burnt off the page by a falling brand or perhaps a flaming beam from the roof of a burning library. It adds a certain impact; the words themselves being subject to arson, looting ….

6

Far and wide the dead fell, pestilence spread across the land, and death took away the brave, until their citadels were deserted and the cities fell into ruins. The kings who tried to rebuild them perished with their armies, and so these remains are empty and the clay tiles from the vaulted roofs lie shattered. The walls are reduced to mounds of masonry that cover the floors. These floors that many a proud and joyful warrior bestrode, ornamented with golden splendour. Here he stood, flushed with wine, his trappings of war polished bright and flashing in the light, admiring his looted treasure, silver, precious stones, and jewellery, this his hoard, and marvelling at this great castle in the middle of its broad kingdom. Here the stone building stood and the surging hot spring at its heart filled the baths. Pouring ... (burnt gaps)....hot streams over grey stones ....... until the round pool ..... then ..... a noble thing ..... city....” Hugh Colvin

The New Elizabethans B EFORE you get thoroughly sick of reading descriptions of all the different ways there are to concoct one of Dame Mary Berry’s Platinum Jubilee Puddings, spare a moment for a rather more permanent Elizabethan legacy: the architectural heritage of The Queen’s sixty-year reign. Sadly, only two of my choices are outside London. The Angel of the North; The British Museum’s Great Hall; the Royal Festival Hall Lloyds of London; the Royal Festival Hall; The London Eye; The London Olympics Aquatic Centre; Lords Media Centre; the acoustically-perfect Royal Festival Hall; Skylon; and Tate Modern. Anthony Gormely’s towering Cor-Ten monolith near Gateshead, with its 54m wingspan capable withstanding 100mph winds, looks like outliving them all; Lord Foster’s glazed internal atrium to Smirk’s neo-classical Bloomsbury museum is nothing short of inspired; and Lloyds of London’s HQ in Lime Sreet is a worthy epitaph to the late Richard Rogers. Cornwall’s Eden Project is said to have been inspired by the American inventor Buckminster Fuller. The British team which fashioned the interlocking Plexiglas domes on a site near St Austell was Grimshaw Associates. Inspiration – plus some ‘white knuckle’ engineering audacity – produced what is one of London’s most recognisable modern landmarks: the 135m-high London Eye on London’s South Bank, designed by Julia Barfield and David Marks. The late Zaha Hadid (who so very nearly gave Cardiff what would have been one of the great opera houses of Europe) had to be content with

8

the London Olympics Aquatic Centre at Stratford in East London as her consolation prize. An unconventionally ‘sensuous’ form was also used by designers Amanda Levete and the late Jan Kaplicky to great effect to fabricate their Lords Media Centre. They used a Falmouth boatyard then moved its semi-monocoque ‘shell’ to St John’s Wood, causing some consternation amongst the ‘rhubarb and custard’ brigade. Skylon – the totemic symbol of the 1951 Festival of Britain, by architects Powell & Moya – is my own personal favourite. Not only because it is a one-off (or because its Meccano-like kit of parts was fabricated in Hereford), but because it is the only one which didn’t survive: cut down on a spiteful whim by Winston Churchill. Downstream from the Skylon’s South Bank site is the only building in this collection which can be classified as a refurbishment: Herzog & de Meuron’s cathedral-like Tate Modern, formerly a power station, which now attracts over six million visitors a year and whose steam turbine era ended just a year before the Queen’s Coronation. Only one out of the capital’s 12 main line train termini was built in the Queen’s reign (she’s still awaiting a start date for the regularly-delayed Crossrail). Grimshaw’s curving green glass Eurostar Terminal at Waterloo fitted the bill perfectly, but Network Rail moved the goalposts and decreed – somewhat illogically - that all Channel crossings should start and finish inside Barlow’s Gothic train shed at St Pancras in north London. When the much-vaunted HS2 terminal at Old Oak Common will be finished is anyone’s guess. Nick Jones

Dear Philospher-in-Residence “The Philosopher Publican” Before moving to Presteigne, we lived in an almost equally bohemian place - Hesket Newmarket in Cumberland. Within 10 yards of our house was the back door of a little pub with its own even smaller brewery (both now owned and run by co-operatives). Before that, the landlord was a philosopher called Jim who had a long whispy beard and looked like most people’s idea of a wizard. Because of lack of storage space behind the tiny bar, the crisps were stored on the stairs up to the first floor flat - packets of each flavour in an open cardboard box sitting on the end of its own individual stair. Every night after closing time, Jim would relax by sitting alone in the empty pub at one of the bar tables, with a large single malt and the Guardian cryptic crossword. As part of the ritual, he would also grab a packet of crisps from one of the boxes on the stairs and lob it, unopened, on the pub floor for his amazingly characterful mongrel, Blott, to tear open and wolf down the contents while Jim got stuck into the crossword and the whiskey. One night, Jim sensed there was something strange going on and raised his head from the crossword. Blott had already devoured his nightly packetfull of crisps and licked up the crumbs from the lino but was holding in his mouth a second unopened packet which Jim must have grabbed by mistake. Blott trotted behind the bar, up the first three or four stairs, deposited the unopened packet in the appropriate box, turned round, trotted down to the bar again, settled down and went to sleep in the middle of the floor as usual. In the week or two following this event, on the very rare occasions that the craic dried up in the bar, the Philosopher Publican would try to initiate a discussion on whether dogs have consciences!” Frank Cosgrove

cinema THE OUTFIT (15)

Bearing some similarities with Bruce Surtees’ 1973 gangster movie of the same name, director/co-writer Graham Moore (Oscar-winning writer of THE IMITATION GAME) has crafted a compelling tale of mafia machinations and human frailty. Notwithstanding the recent box-office dud that was PHANTOM OF THE OPEN, his stagey but handsome setting allows the usually impressive Mark Rylance to deliver a memorable performance as Leonard Burling, an ex-Saville Row tailor emigrated to 1950s Chicago where his gentleman’s outfitters becomes a crucible for the Boyle crime family to plan and execute their vicious trade. But unbeknownst to them and using early bugging devices, the FBI are soon onto frequent customers clan boss Roy (Simon Russell-Beale again), his lieutenants and Burling’s initially unwitting role in their activities and as the film unfolds their relationships become ever more deliciously stratified and tense. OPERATION MINCEMEAT (12A)

This engaging WW2-based crowd-pleaser rests on a fairly unlikely but true premise that Germany could be tricked into believing that the Allies were to concentrate their attacks on Greece rather than the facist armies massed in north-western Europe, a hoax relying on a corpse on a Spanish beach carrying secret documents suggesting just that. Director John Madden (BEST EXOTIC) has assembled a top cast led by Colin Firth and Mathew McFadden (most recently in SUCCESSION) as the intelligence officers who dreamt up and must execute the plan with Simon Russell-Beale (DEATH OF STALIN) as a crusty Winston Churchill reluctantly agreeing to it. The usual sort of on-screen derring-do is instead invested here in the back-room machinations required to pull off the hoax which are nonetheless tinged with much waspish, stiff upper-lipped humour which a supporting cast that includes Penelope Wilton, Kelly Macdonald and Jeremy Isaacs ably maintain. And it looks great.

THE NORTHMAN (15)

Director/co-writer Robin Eggars’s two previous film, THE WITCH and THE LIGHTHOUSE were set in specific historical periods with strong elements of mystical disturbance but they were small, indie films and now with THE NORTHMAN these same qualities run wild on the back of a $90million budget. Set mainly in 10th century Scandinavia where king Aurvandill (Ethan Hawke) and his queen (Nicole Kidman in a preposterous wig and dodgy accent) prepare their young son, Amleth (Oscar Novak) to inherit the throne and the almost constant hostilities that go with it. However when Aurvandill is killed by his brother (Claes Bang) Amleth escapes and fast-forward 20 years he’s become a near-bestial member of a Viking crew (now played by Alexander Skarsgård) pillaging settlements in eastern Europe. What follows is a relentless, often bloody but gripping saga of vengeance which Eggers, co-writer Sjón (LAMB) and his regular cinematographer Jarin Blaschke deliver with huge gusto.

R

EGULAR readers of Mr Pernickety’s artless ramblings in the Woolly Organ will need no reminding that he is, at least, a fervent champion of the British pub and its traditional role. He has always found this role more relevant in rustic places - swayed, probably, by the memory of a cycle tour of Gloucestershire as a tanned and lissom youth, when the Roman road to Cirencester bore not many cars, and on a balmy August day, in a sun-dappled dingle by a Cotswold brook, he ordered a pint of ale in a pub of honey-hued stone. For centuries, in isolated places and rural settlements the purpose of the pub has been not just the serving of ale and victuals, but also the providing of a local forum for the exchange of ideas, goods, opinions, services and personal calumny. For it to do these things well it must be clearly at the centre of its community, and true to its core functions. One of the tragedies of rural Britain in recent decades has been - along with the annihilation of some of our finest trees in the 1970s by the creeping natural pestilence of Dutch elm disease - the man-made pestilence of nefarious Pubcos who have brought about the demise of thousands of beautiful and greatly loved country inns for nothing more than their shareholders’ profit. Where they’ve been unable to achieve a formal change of planning use for the building and sell it as a far more valuable private dwelling, they have burdened their tenants with absurdly punitive leases, safe in the knowledge that when the current tenant sinks in a sea of debt, some other poor gullible bastard will pour all his or her life-savings into a rosy fantasy of pub-keeping. Occasionally, these unprincipled freeholders have had no option but to sell freeholds as pubs, either to positive thinking entrepreneurs, or to the communities in which they stand. Happily, this has been the case in several places within the cloven hoof print of the Woolly Organ, when Mr P has always urged as much local support as is available. He has also, of course, been eager to visit them all. So far he has eaten at three. He reported his enjoyment of The Pheasant at Neenton in September 2019, and it is now well-used and widely regarded as a fine country pub by any standard. He had previously reviewed The Crown in Dilwyn, to which he recently returned for dinner with his friend the WrinkleRocker, blues musician and former chef. The Crown was bravely saved for the village of Dilwyn when their Parish Council bought the freehold. It was supported by the village and visitors from the start, originally managed for the

28

The Crown, Dilwyn

The Boot, Orleton community, but a few years ago, was leased by the parish to tenants who now run the pub with verve and commitment. The best and most obvious quality of the Crown is that it is a truly local pub, with a busy bar and a dining-room that was full the night Mr P and the WR sat down for dinner. It’s a friendly room, unpretentious and not especially chic, like the food and the service - just what a village pub should be, and luckily for Dilwyn, M.Michelin’s reporters will not be beating a path to its door. Mr P and his guest enjoyed their food, and their only cavil with the cuisine was that, rather than nuanced, tricky dishes like chicken and chorizo casserole, it might be better to focus on reliable English dishes - sausages, beef and dumplings, flat-iron steaks and fish’n’chips (with veggie options naturally). The Boot in Orleton has also defied and survived a death threat. Mr P has known the place for at least twenty-five years and always enjoyed it for its ambience and wonderful interior. He was, then, mightily distressed a few years ago when its owner, a property spiv who for a while occupied the local manor house, was desperately seeking permission to de-license it and sell it as a very des res with a few “executive-style” houses plopped in the garden. Thank Bacchus, swift action by savvy villagers with strong support from the community saved the place. When Mr P and his Lovely Companion went to lunch there on a warm Sunday in late March, an alfresco pint of Hobson’s Best in the wellkept garden was a joy before they went in to eat an English Sunday lunch which neither could fault. Mr P opened the batting with a smoked duck’s breast croquette, beetroot and blue cheese that was a proper tastetreat and super prelude to a serving of roast pork, from Tudges’ herd of traditional Berkshires, reared just up the road in Richard’s Castle. The LC, not normally given to extravagant hymns of praise, was fulsome in her approval the meat, the crackling, the accoutrements - “all perfect”, she murmured. The bread-and-butter pudding, with subtle additions of marmalade and cinnamon, left them grinning with pleasure. The wine selection was good, and not cheekily over-priced, while service at The Boot, under Chris, the affable and easygoing manager, particularly pleased Mr P with its complete absence of any irritating orders to “Enjoy!” Mr P must say that everyone responsible for saving the lovely old Boot has a lot to be proud of. grass roots Energy Strategy brings Despair to Environmentalists!

I

HAVE no hotline to government ministers or spin doctors, but I suspect that their instant response to the war in Ukraine went something like this – “Thank goodness Ukraine is not in NATO!” and “Help! How do we boost our energy supplies?”. Whenever alarm bells ring over energy security, there are usually a few dozen MPs who can be relied on to call for the nuclear option. This time the prime minister himself was leading the charge. The Ukraine crisis was barely three weeks old when Geiger counters began to click furiously in Whitehall as they registered the fallout from Number Ten over energy policy. It soon emerged that Boris Johnson was calling for Britain to build a whole fleet of new nuclear power plants. According to the new Energy Strategy, the aim is to erect up to eight new nuclear stations, under a body called “Great British Nuclear”. (Don’t laugh!) And, says the document, how about a U-turn on fracking while we’re about it? Grass Roots readers may recall that a halt to fracking was called only three years ago, after earthquakes were set off by shale gas activities in Lancashire. A couple of the new nuclear reactors will likely be sited just up the coast from Lancashire, on the coast of Cumbria, near Windscale, the site of Britain’s largely hushed-up radiation accident of the 1950s. Windscale gave nuclear power a bad name, so the vast and sprawling nuclear site was later re-branded as Sellafield. If fracking were re-started in north-west England, the government could perhaps run a useful trial on the impact of seismic shocks on nuclear power plants and N-waste sites, to see what we have learned from Japan’s Fukushima disaster of 2011! Apologies for a joke in very poor taste! But, to be honest, much of the new Energy Strategy is like a bad joke. Whoever put into Johnson’s head the idea of building up to eight new nuclear power stations had perhaps forgotten that around the end of the Thatcher era, just over thirty years ago, the electricity power industry was sold off, privatised. Since that time, it has been up to the generating companies to decide how many and what type of power stations they wish to build. The urge to build multiple atomic plants, in response to the latest energy scare, is an affliction that I call Kneejerk Nuclear. It can start with a tingling sensation in the extremities, but it often develops to take over most of the central nervous system and the brain. There is no simple cure for this condition, but the best advice is for the sufferer to go and lie in a darkened room, away from bright lights, if possible attended by a top treasury mandarin. In this case, Boris Johnson had the chancellor himself on hand to give advice. But it seems that the dialogue between Johnson and Rishi Sunak did not emit a warm glow of light. More likely, there were sparks and the sound of generators backfiring. Whilst it appears that the Sunak household is in rather better financial standing than the treasury itself, it is a truism that the fabulously wealthy are often very careful over how they spend their money.

The bill for the new nuclear plant at Hinkley Point in Somerset will easily run into the mid twenties of billions

New reactor going up at Hinkley Point, so far £5 billion over budget

of pounds. Close to the cost of the last new nuclear plant, Sizewell B in Suffolk, completed in the 1990s. Briefed no doubt by the treasury mandarins on the history of swingeing nuclear costs and dreadful schedule overruns, chancellor Sunak reckoned the UK needs a fleet of new nuclear plants like a hole in the head. With Britain already mired in debt to a degree not seen since the 1970s, Sunak perhaps sensed that a fleet of new N-power plants, costing hundreds of billions of pounds, might send the UK either into bankruptcy or to the doors of the International Monetary Fund –pleading for a gigantic loan. However, nuclear power sceptics should take comfort from the fact that the last two major UK nuclear power programmes (each aimed at building about ten nuclear plants) has resulted in precisely one reactor being built in each case. And even that tally errs on the side of nuclear optimism since the Hinkley Point plant, currently about £5 billion over budget, is still quite a few years from being able to supply a single volt of electric power. The new Energy Strategy, after several false dawns, stumbled lamely out of Whitehall in early mid-April. I assume that it had needed frantic re-writing, both to highlight the N-word, and to boast about steps being taken to free Britain of any whiff of gas emanating from the domain of the appalling Russian warmonger, Vladimir Putin. The Energy Strategy missed the chance to create a new playing field for onshore wind – caving in, as ever, to green welly people in the shires who find the turbines an eyesore. While this infuriates the eco-warriors, it is unlikely to produce any real resistance from Labour. I guess Labour must have turned pro-nuclear late last year, while your humble columnist was paddling at the seaside, trying to ignore the news pages in favour of the Quick Crossword. When we work out how Starmer and Co became pronuclear, we will no doubt find the fingerprints of a huge trade union, like the GMB, all over the policy shift. In Broad Sheep soon, I hope to tackle the issue of highly toxic nuclear waste, a decades-long headache. There is still no credible disposal method, even on the horizon. And, most likely, the industry never will find a real solution. Julian O’Halloran
