RE you aware of the sudden proliferation of Book summary apps? No, I thought not. So here’s the deal you pay a monthly fee, download an app called (Blinklist, Shortform, Get Abstract, or Instaread) and then you have access to thousands of short summaries of non-fiction books you are never likely to read. However if you are busy, successful, highflying entrepreneur like myself it means I can keep up with the latest trends in technology, self-help and fitness regimes without wasting time reading a lot of boring words. So for instance, in 8 minutes I can discover - how mistakes and failures can positively shape my life - by not reading Emma Gannons book ‘Ctrl Alt Delete’. Or possibly in a rather overlong 15 minutes – how social media may have democratized who has a public voice – by not reading ‘Against the Rules’ by Michael Lewis. Or in five seconds What’s in this Months Broad Sheep – just a load of times and dates of poncy arts events you are never likely to go to - by Pete.
However you have not entirely wasted your time because after reading a summary of “How to Convince Yourself You a Brilliant Genius” I am now at liberty to reveal my latest plan for revolutionizing the Welsh Borders. You maybe aware of The Disney Corporations move into real estate. The company’s portfolio now includes film production, cable and streaming channels, theme parks, cruise ship holidays, golf courses, theatre productions, safari expeditions, music publishing, an airline, and even its own island in the Bahamas. The French government gave it 5,000 acres of land next door to Disney World Paris in order to build its own retail village. Now, under construction in Palm Springs on the intersection of (I kid you not) Frank Sinatra Drive and Bob Hope Drive they are building a gleaming new world of 2,000 homes arranged around a sparkling turquoise lake, where every aspect of life will be curated by the entertainment corporation. For 1 million dollars a pop you can enjoy a chance to live in a Disney movie “where the story is all about you” where neighbours can bond over Disney-themed art lessons, enjoy dinners inspired by Disney stories and join family days with Disney-related activities. However I am not about to suggest bringing the mighty mouse to the Welsh Borders but I am suggesting that there are other multi-billionaires who might jump at the chance of owning their own little village in the countryside. This could be the ideal way of dealing with Britain’s chronic housing shortage and cash strapped local authorities. On my short list are those two idiots who want to send us
all to Mars, Bezos and Musk and also the only two people who seem to be making a living in the music industry these days, Ed Sheeran and Beyoncé.

As you have probably guessed I am eyeing up that chain of towns that run up the Border from Hay to Bishops Castle. Nice towns in a quiet sort of way but in between them what’s going on? Not much, a few soggy fields full of black plastic bags of silage, some mouldy trees and load of boring sheep. Imagine giving Elon Musk free rein to build TESLATOWN in between Hay and Kington. If he gave up building those soppy space ships he could afford to give everyone a free Tesla (other cars would be banned) with their new house. Then in between Kington and Presteigne I am sort of guessing scruffy Ed would fit right in with his town CASTLE ON THE HILL. It is rumoured he was last in Presteigne when he was roadie for Nizlopi although no one can quite remember him. I am rather struggling with the next one but I think Beyonce should probably build between Presteigne and Knighton. Although I can’t really imagine her shopping in Tuffins I think her new found enthusiasm for Country Music could endear her to the locals and she should call her development BRAMPTON BEYONCE and everybody who bought houses there would be expected to look fabulous and do co-ordinated dance routines in the street. Finally we come to AMAZONIA between Knighton and Bishops Castle. I realize Clun is a bit in the way but no matter its high time we got rid of that stupid little bridge and I am sure Jeff Bezos would soon sort out the pathetic transport links up that way. The optimum solution for getting around would be to download a ticket and bar code from the internet and then get picked up and thrown in the back of the nearest white van and delivered along with all the other packages and self help books.
If you think this is all a bit pie in the sky then let me remind you after Prince Charles’s venture, Poundland or whatever they call it, they made him King so I am at least expecting an O.B.E.

Passion and Aggression
I down, trucked to a port, shipped to Norway, pelleted and shipped back to Drax power station, where it will be burned to provide power for people’s mobile phones while the burgermasters and forestry companies and shipping lines and power stations tell you how good you, and by association they, are being. This may cause you to feel what was once known as ‘pissed off’. Forget it. You should feel fine, sorry, fully invested, because corporations are wiser than little you, and they know that a tree is a tree is a tree, and tree planting washes greener.
T is only right that before you take the contribution journey below you absorb the following message. We expect both perusers and contributors of the articles in this publication to behave kindly and with toleration. Abuse of any kind will not be tolerated, and if you are not extremely careful, and I mean extremely, someone will log you as a Totally Intentional Hate Crime Incident Provider, which carries a sentence of, er, can’t remember how many years. Simply asking what you have done, particularly in that tone of voice, will imply that you are getting ready to be hateful and will involve you being locked up for, er, the length of time shown above. And if you point out that actually no length of time is shown above it will be taken as an act of aggression and you will be reported to the authorities again and again until you stop. By the way, you are on CCTV.
A word on language. We are sunsetting various expressions that have little relevance or may be construed as microaggressions. The act of ‘writing’, for instance, connotes the vicious stabbing of virgin paper with stinking coloured fluids via a marking point, which may in some circumstances be a ‘nib’. It is beyond the remit of this contribution to point out the Freudian implications of this sullying of pristine surfaces with pointed objects. We (there is no ‘I’ any more; thanks to the multifarious benefits of social media everything herein contributed represents community consensus, helped in some cases by kind collaborators from the Chinese Communist Party) have replaced the word ‘write’ with the words ‘reach out’. This is much kinder as I know you will agree or else. It has resonances of Jehovah talking to Adam on the Sistine Chapel ceiling, except for the threatening nudity obviously, and also makes the writer, sorry, reacher out, feel significantly managerial, because it substitutes two lovely syllables for one lousy syllable. Did I say lousy? Please accept my apology and do not report me, let us keep the police out of this please, please. Goes to show that microaggressions can, if not continuously monitored, penetrate the skulls of even the most correct of humans. Creatures. Writers. Outreachers. Bloody minefield. Oops.
Anyway.
Sunsetting ‘writing’ and onboarding ‘reaching out’ and issuing warnings that most normal human behaviour in the face of public frustration will not be tolerated is part of our plan to make British enterprise a more, er, welcoming place. Many large organizations tasked with (for instance) filling our rivers with perfectly natural human effluent and making it impossible to access our bank accounts are enthusiastically espousing popular causes such as diversity and nature conservation. For example. If you are buying a burger made of a beast fed on soya grown on what was once the Amazon rainforest, it is only reasonable that you should be told the burgermaster is planting a compensatory tree. The tree will not be an ancient forest giant but a pine tree somewhere in Scotland, which will be chopped
Hang on.
I can hear someone saying that we have strayed somewhat from the original point, whatever that was. I must remind you that such remarks, once considered legitimate criticism, are capable of being considered microaggressions, and are indeed segueing into the actually offensive.
O no they aren’t.
O yes they are. The reacher-out’s opinion is final. You are cancelled.
But –-
Lalalalalalala. Can’t hear you.

Homo Sapiens and the Decline of Tribalism
THERE are still those living in western democracies who are puzzled about the large numbers of white people who came out in support of the Black Lives Matter movement after George Floyd was murdered in Minneapolis four years ago. As Sherlock Holmes might have remarked to his baffl ed colleague, ‘It’s evolutionary, my dear Watson.’
I haven’t yet heard Mr Trump asked directly whether or not he accepts the scientific principles of evolution, while members of fundamentalist Christian sects like the Amish or Mennonites entirely reject the concept of evolution. They believe that the world was created by God around 6,000 years ago, in seven days, just as described in Genesis. I imagine Mr Trump propagates whatever view he believes is most expedient for the audience he is addressing. Aware that a significant proportion of his supporters are from these and similar communities, he is not averse to brandishing copies of a Bible which, it is said by some who know him, he seldom reads. This is his way of conveying the barely credible idea that he aspires to follow the teachings of Jesus. Recently he’s compounded this by widely promoting a new edition of the King James’ Bible, named the God Bless the USA Bible, at $59.99, on which he earns a commission of $10. This can be added to his share of the sales proceeds of the hideous golden baseball boots he launched last month. There is a tidy irony in the probability that his bible profits will go towards funding his defence against criminal charges that he covered up payments made to pornographic film star, Stormy Daniels for not revealing details of their relationship or, perhaps more embarrassingly, the quality of his performance. In any event, Trump’s attempt to seduce the evolution-deniers alone won’t win for him.
Forgive this verbose intro. In broad terms Charles Darwin’s theory proposes that all species evolve to compete, survive and reproduce in order to become more perfectly adapted to sustain and, where necessary, to increase their numbers. The natural corollary of this objective would be the development of a species which can feed itself, protect itself and live harmoniously in a way that would best allow for the continuation of the species sapiens in all its racial forms.
The ultimate physical destiny of mankind is not predictable in any meaningful way. However it is clear that if the human species can find a way to live throughout the globe, and beyond, in harmony and using all the resources that the earth has to offer, in a way that is equitable and sustainable, it will be closer to being a better adapted species, closer to being perfect, which must be the apex of evolutionary destiny. If the achievement of harmonious coexistence of all races within the species throughout the world can be identified as a primary evolutionary objective, the greatest possible cooperation between traditional races or tribal groupings must be a fundamental element in attaining this primary evolutionary objective.
Even in the last 2,000 years – a short blink in the history of Sapiens’ development – substantial changes, progress even, in attitudes to foreign tribes can be detected. Where Roman Emperors found that staging spectacular Coliseum shows of Christians being let loose in the arena to be torn to bits and devoured by lions effectively mollified their restive populations, even Mr Trump would not perceive a political advantage in offering spectacles of alien populations – perhaps Muslims, Chinese spreaders of what he liked to call ‘Kung-Flu’, or illegal Mexican immigrants – being devoured by wild animals in the Yankee Stadium.
A critical number of those who live in free-thinking western democracies has reached a point in the process of human evolution where archaic, vestigial tribalism and the crude bigotry that it breeds, is being consciously, specifically rejected; where people are understanding that to progress as a species, we must concur with our collective evolutionary imperative in overcoming this ancestral bigotry, in the same way that we have overcome so many other vestigial tendencies. This new understanding was manifest, for example, in the joy felt by many when Barack Obama was elected President of the US – a clear sign that the world had come of age, although, as has become clear, not quite entirely yet. That is to be expected; there has always been resistance to social progress. Human evolution depends on the conscious and willing acceptance of the need for change, and changes inevitably occur in tiny increments, unevenly embraced across the population.
For tens of millennia, mankind relied strongly on tribal adhesion; it was an important part of self-preservation, along with the basic human imperatives – to eat, to survive, to procreate. As population increases, so the need for loyalty to small tribal groupings recedes, but while it is naturally difficult, even counter-instinctive, to shed these shared and deeply embedded tendencies, it is essential for the ultimate survival of mankind that we do so. In a globally connected, ubiquitous population, tribalism and racial bigotry are only divisive and regressive.
Supporters of Black Lives Matter were simply recognising this obvious truth.

Reunited after 2021’s THE LOST DAUGHTER, Jessie Buckley plays Rose, a raucous Irish single mum who moves in next door to Olivia Coleman’s Edith, a pious, self-centred spinster in 1920s Littlehampton. Based on a true story first Rose, then all manner of mainly female residents begin receiving sweary, libelous letters accusing them of various disgusting traits and the finger of suspicion soon points to Edith. However the local bumbling detectives (Hugh Skinner and Paul Chahidi) fail to make an arrest leaving it to the force’s only female officer (the fabulously deadpan Anjana Vasadi) to finally do the business. There are subplots involving Edith’s initially defensive parents (a tyrannical Timothy Spall and put-upon Gemma Jones) and her absurd efforts to evangelise Rose, but overall this is pure black comedy, directed with an urgent pace and carefully curated period style by Thea Sharrock (ME BEFORE YOU).

Considering the political polarisation globally and the gradual slide into factional conflicts, Alex Garland – a writer/director never afraid to tackle big ideas, e.g. EX-MACHINA, ANNIHILATION – offers us a nearfuture America where heavily armed states battle against the Federal government to achieve secession. Garland doesn’t much address the politics here, although the president (Nick Offerman) is clearly dictator material, but instead concentrates on the consequences. These are seen almost literally through the lens of seasoned war photographer Lee Smith (Kirsten Dunst) and her journo colleagues Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson) and Joel (Wagner Moura), plus overly keen if naive amateur photographer Jessie (Cailee Spaeny) travelling through the once familiar, now dystopian heartlands from New York to Washington. By turns exciting, shocking and sobering, their journey is underscored by the protagonist’s developing relationships and their motivates, with Garland’s regular cinematographer Rob Hardy and production designer Caty Maxey (JASON BOURNE) ensuring a worrisome, seat-edging realism.

The Loughpool, not far from Ross
WHEN Mr P was last at this unpretentious, pretty little black and white hostelry, the chief skillet wielder was a well-known scribbler-chef called Stephen Bull –ex-London, talented and innovative. That must have been in the 90s or early noughties, but the strong reputation he established lingered on and was reinforced by the current chef, Paul Franklin who took it on in 2015.
Mr Pernickety and his Lovely Companion had arranged to meet some old friends (Mr and Mrs S) at The Loughpool for lunch and chatter. Mr P used to sing (croon, some would say) in a church choir with Mr S, a breeder of Hereford cattle of ancient and venerable lineage, which he rears nearby on hilly pasture, before the country gives way to the larger treeless downs towards Monmouth. Mr P was struck a long time ago by the difference between these hills. and those of North Herefordshire, which are generally well-clad with trees, and more beautiful. Seeking reasons for this, Mr P learned, to his continuing fascination, about a movement in landscape design, known as The Picturesque. It was a late 18th century approach to landscaping that had its roots in North Herefordshire, the home of its perpetrators, Richard Payne Knight of Downton Castle, Uvedale Price of Foxley and Thomas Johnes of Croft Castle and the Hafod in western Wales. A succinct description of the Picturesque ethos might be that it was a response to the orderly landscapes created by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown around the nation’s great parks. The Picturesque was, essentially, a distressed, shabby chic version of Capability’s predictable rolling turf acres, clumps of trees and serpentine lakes – a snook being cocked in a daring challenge. It was more exciting and edgy and, where it’s still evident, a very enjoyable spectacle. Some examples of the look can still be seen around Downton Castle and, more spectacularly, at the Hafod, now a Country Park not far from Devil’s Bridge. But, Mr P perceives that, not for the first time in his Woolly Organ ramblings, he has digressed.
The Loughpool is as tucked away as it could be from big highways, in a dingle among a network of tiny lanes. On a damp Wednesday, beneath dark clouds that stretched from horizon to horizon, a day discouraging carousing and jollification, there was nevertheless a surprising number of quietly gleaming cars parked outside. Mr P and the LC entered discreetly to find the place buzzing. The interior was warm and inviting, with low-beamed ceilings and flag-stoned floors. Their guests had not yet arrived and they sat at one of the unflashy, mellowed oak tables on comfortable chairs that understood the contours of a middle-aged diner’s behind. Visually, everything about the place
seemed to be meeting the LC’s exacting standards. Mr P is ashamed to say that he can’t remember if any background music was audible, but he was happily aware of a gentle murmur of conversation between people who clearly enjoyed it.
The staff were knowledgeable and chatty in a helpful way. The menu was stuffed with unconventional, interesting ideas. The chef uses meat that comes from specific local herds – dry aged Redpoll beef from Perrystone, along with woodland-reared, acorn munching pork, and venison.
Mr P’s guests arrived; Ledbury Bitter was recommended, and pleased Mr P’s tastebuds, but ordering lunch was a challenge, because the menu was so exciting. Mr P started with Oak-Smoked Poached Haddock, potato & cauli Bombay with a poached egg – a light and subtle combination. Mrs S and the LC shared a plate of Spanish charcuterie which looked good The LC followed that with Pork and Beef Meatballs in tomato sauce. ‘Much better than Ikea,’ she muttered.
After happily eating a Grilled Goat cheese with provençale legumes and a rocket salad, Mr S followed it up with a burger of venison served with caramelised onions and Brie, which he liked, although he was a little sniffy about the wrapping of Sun-Blushed Tomato and Wild Garlic Focaccio roll (although Mr P thought he would have enjoyed it.)
Mrs S was delighted with her superior Croque Monsieur at a modest £15 for a main course, while Mr P had Buttermilk Chicken Skewers with sweet chilli sauce and real coleslaw. He loved the flavours and originality of it, though, frankly, he would happily have tried everything on the menu. Perhaps in due course, he will.
He finished with a crème brulee, which earned a silver medal to Jules of Weobley’s gold last month.
Mr Pernickety

PSYCHOTHERAPEUTIC PROCESS
Facilitated shadow work is a type of embodied psychotherapy rooted in depth psychology. I work in longer sessions, typically 5-hours. These deep-dive one-to- one sessions allow a shame free space to develop within which to identify, explore and transform those habitual, ingrained or unconscious patterns, beliefs or behaviours that trap us and hold us back from living full and joyful lives. This work holds the potential for deep personal growth, and deep healing and is the place to dive real deep into difficulty and challenge, shame or guilt, your grief, your fear or rage. The holding I offer you is both sensitive and strong, and you are invited to bring anything you wish to our work together.
