COUPLE of hours before going onstage at the legendary Party at the Castle at Abergavenny Food Festival we (Little Rumba) were introduced to a modest, friendly German called Jürgen. All the band, except me, recognised him as the popular Bake Off contestant, who to the dismay of viewers was ejected from the competition just before the final. He had been talking at the food festival and had let slip to the organisers that he also played trombone. They had sent him off to us with the suggestion that we find a spot for him. With some trepidation, we told him to join us at the soundcheck. Although not exactly Trombone Shorty he did seem to know one end of the instrument from the other (particularly important when playing trombone). I picked out a few numbers with simple chord sequences and agreed he should join us onstage towards the end of the set. We had a particularly nice gig and as the sun set the Bake Off savvy audience were delighted when Jürgen joined us and played solos on four or five songs. Here is a pic of us after the gig to prove I’m not making all this up and the icing on the cake was that the following week on The Food Programme on Radio 4 Jürgen was interviewed and the programme (all about the food festival) played out with a recording of Jürgen and Little Rumba. We immediately jumped on this as a possible route to fame and fortune and have decided from now on to incorporate a reality TV star as guest artiste at all our gigs. We don’t care who it is or how rubbish their playing is as long as they have been on Mastermind, or Love island and can knock out 3 blind mice on the recorder, they’re in. Failing that we will have to send the band off one by one to get famous. John could do Master Chef, Hugh could do The Pottery Throwdown one, Jax could do Strictly, Jess could do The Masked Singer I could do Crimewatch and Dave the band’s favourite stand in could do Dog Portrait Artist of the Year.

A couple of days ago I invited myself for a quick preview of a venture that opens on November 2nd in Llandrindod. Over the last three years the intrepid duo of musician Adam Faust and artist Kate Milsom have taken on Bradleys a magnificent Email: info@broadsheep.com wreck of a Victorian Hardware store and turned it into a thing of beauty. You probably Website: www.broadsheep.com know the cast iron façade of this building the grandest thing in Middleton Street the main shopping street but inside it was in a poor state. Roof, windows, electrics, plumbing, décor you name it and the duo, with a hand picked bunch of builders have sorted it. This time no hardware I’m afraid but instead a sumptuous coffee and wine bar. A stunning art gallery curated by Kate which will house the Kilvert Collection and the work of Eugene Fisk and others and behind the main four-storey building another three-storey monster which is now a fully kitted Twin Peaks Recording Studio and two floors of really classy accommodation, plus kitchen, bathrooms and lounging space that should keep the snootiest rock star happy. It’s great and I heartily recommend you get down there with your mates and grab a comfortable table in the window, snaffle up some tapas or perhaps a croissant or two with some excellent coffee and the finest French and Spanish wines known to humanity and watch the world go by. Afterwards you can either peruse the amazing art collection or pop in the back and record your new album! https://bradleysbuilding.com

philosophy We’re Going To Need Bigger Buckets

A

N abiding memory of my father was his list-making. His final chore before bed was to make a list of the jobs to be done the next day. Some people, thinking much further ahead, make lists that extend far into the future, marking out the intended shape of their lives. [Maybe they’ve forgotten the old joke: how do you make God laugh? – you tell Him your plans.] A very different affair is the bucket-list: things to get done sooner rather than later. Urgent. Tempus fugit. Lists, of which there are many types, look either backwards or forwards in time. They’re either a kind of grim end-of-term report on a life already lived – such as the Always-Intended-To-Do-But-Never-Did list, or the more optimistic Still-Determined-To-Do variety. Another variation on the theme is the TO-Done list, the invention of The Guardian columnist Hannah Jane Parkinson. She advocates making a list of tasks already completed. So beneficial is this technique she can recommend it to anyone feeling the need to de-stress and to feel better about themselves. [Her delightful book, The Joy of Small Things, should be on your own To-Done list.] As your Philosopher-in-Residence I’m delighted to offer my own modest contribution, namely, the NEVER-TO-DO list. For example, I intend NEVER to get a tattoo, NEVER to go on a cruise, and NEVER to spend so much as another minute with Mr and Mrs B. [especially Mr B.] And for bungee-jumping or swimming with sharks or trying out the zip-wire at Blaenau Ffestiniog – no thank you. NEVER. If you’re tempted to see this as a negative attitude, resist the temptation. Compiling the NEVER-TO-DO list is the opposite of negative: it’s clearing the decks, thereby giving yourself a better chance of identifying, and working on the things you REALLY want to achieve in life. The NEVER-TO-DO list strips away the layers of dross and lets the Good Life shine through. At least, that’s the theory. Along similar lines is the well-known image of the sculptor chipping away, knowing that hidden in the stone or wood is a work of art waiting to be revealed. ‘All’ the sculptor has to do is get rid of what’s not necessary. The masterpiece is already there, just below the surface, waiting to be unlocked and let into the light of day. Yes, one way or another lists can be extremely useful. But they can also be disturbing. Alarming even. Which leads me to Jean-Paul Sartre. Sartre is not everybody’s cup of tea. There’s a bleakness in his philosophy. Indeed, writing about such rib-tickling themes as anguish, alienation, abandonment and meaninglessness – not to forget his view that ‘hell is other people’, that we’re ‘condemned to be free’ and that ‘human life begins on the far side of despair’ – he hardly comes across as a laugh-a-minute. For sure, his philosophy takes no prisoners.

6

Jean-Paul Sartre

Like all his existentialist colleagues, be they religious or secular, Sartre attempts to describe what it means to be human. More specifically, what it means to live one’s life to the full, to live an ‘authentic’ existence. His views have divided people. Some see his account of the human condition as so ludicrously flawed that it cannot be taken seriously. Not even proper philosophy. For others, though, he offers some uncomfortable truths – one of which brings us back to list-making. Sartre argues that an individual’s life can be adequately summed up in terms of what they have actually achieved. In other words, the To-Done list. For him, nothing else counts, not even unfulfilled intentions, or failed hopes. Writing in 1946 he claims that the human being is ‘nothing else but the sum of his actions, nothing else but what his life is’. If so, this is a hard truth to swallow, since it takes out of account all those frustrations and physical circumstances that might prevent us from realizing our ambitions. Even so, Sartre insists on seeing his description of the human condition as thoroughly optimistic, placing our destiny in our own hands. We’re self-made, but the process is on-going. It’s not yet complete. The individual, like the human race as whole, Sartre sees as a work in progress. So maybe lists are our friends. The To-Do bucket-list focuses the mind on specific targets and prompts us to get on with the job. Carpe diem. The Never-To-Do list helps us eliminate time-wasting activities. Then there’s the TO-Done list – that THE one to KEEP CONSTRUCTING. Whichever list we’re working on, sooner or later we’re going to need bigger buckets. Philosopher-in-Residence

cinema KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON (15)

Based on the real history of the indigenous Osage tribe banished from their homelands to barren wastelands in Oklahoma, Martin Scorcese’s first ever western, or neo-western, begins with a funeral and then descends into an epic masterpiece of tragedy and shame. Flashing back to 1920, the Osage discover oil on their land and soon become impossibly rich, which galvanizes the attention of cattle baron Bill Hale (Robert De Niro) and his war veteran nephew, Eric (Leonardo Di Caprio) who he steers into a marriage with the original holder of lucrative land rights, Mollie (Lily Gladstone, CERTAIN WOMEN). Against a background of brutally murdered tribesman and a federal investigation, a catalogue of self-righteous entitlement, emotional manipulation and bitter wrangling ensues. Despite its 206 minute running time, not a moment here is wasted and Scorcese regulars Di Caprio and De Niro working together for the first time plus the incandescent Gladstone are a joy to behold.

THE LESSON (15) This feature film debut for both noted actor Alice Troughton (HOLBY CITY, EASTENDERS) and playwright now screenwriter Alex McKeith is a fine showcase for two veteran thesps, Richard E. Grant and Julie Delphy (the BEFORE trilogy). He a noted novelist, JM Sinclair, suffering from writer’s block, she his wife and former curator, Helene, who are both trying to get their son Bertie (Stephen McMillan, BOILING POINT) into Oxford, a task that it soon becomes obvious requires the assistance of a graduate-and aspiring writer-cum-tutor, Liam (Daryl McCormack, GOOD LUCK TO YOU LEO GRANDE) to get him over the line. Almost inevitably, Liam becomes ensnared in dark family secrets and resentments which equally inevitably threaten his own emotional equilibrium, indeed his future career but the stellar ensemble cast and the writer and directors’ subtle deployment of both trigger points and narrative. coherence lead to an extremely satisfying final act. 8 Nov THE UNLIKELY PILGRIMAGE OF HAROLD FRY (12A) Hope Bowdler VH 01694 721376 8 Nov BOOK CLUB - THE NEXT CHAPTER (12A) The Market Theatre, Ledbury 07967 517125 9 Nov PLEASANTVILLE (12) Pembridge Film Nights 07774 237718 9 Nov DOUBLE INDEMNITY (1944) (PG) Leintwardine Community Centre 07572 442903 10 Nov CLOSE (2022) (12) Market Theatre, Ledbury 07967 517125 10 Nov BENEDITION (12) The Simpson Hall, Burghill 07726 148736 10 Nov THE LOST KING (12A) Knighton Community Centre 07964 023841

Announcing the 2nd Nina & Co Vintage Film Night:

SHANGHAI EXPRESS

After the great success of Nina & Co’s first Vintage film, Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon at the Ludlow Assembly Rooms, our second feature is Shanghai Express…. Of all the delirious exoticisms created by Marlene Dietrich and Josef von Sternberg during their white-hot period in the 1930s at Paramount, Shanghai Express (1932) is a riotous exercise in excess in every area; the visuals are overpowering and sumptuous; the costumes ornate and extravagant; the sets a riot of fabrics, light and space; and all of it captured in the most delectable black-and-white cinematography.

Ludlow Assembly Rooms, 7:30 pm Wednesday 29th November

GOLDA (12A)

With Israel engulfed in its latest and most bloody conflict ever, the release of Guy Nattiv’s film about the consequences of 1973 Yom Kippur war is unexpectedly prescient, throwing into sharp focus the plight of a nation wrought quite literally out of desert sand, but sand originally owned and occupied by another, religiously determined nation. Nattiv, who has form with his powerful portrait of a reformed neo-Nazi, SKIN, tells the story through the country’s eponymous prime minister’s dealings with her generals, luminaries local and foreign, most notably Henry Kissinger (Liev Schreiber) from whom she’s trying to get more fighter jets. And as Golda, Helen Mirren, more used to playing more fragrant historical figures (TRUMBO, THE QUEEN) offers a tour de force melding of toughness and shrewdness behind a head-to-toe prosthetic suit, and wreathed in cigarette smoke that left me wondering if the entire film was an exercise in product placement with a death-wish! 12 Nov RICHARD III (1995) (15) The Coach House Theatre, Malvern 01684 892277 12 Nov HENRY V (1989) (12A) The Coach House Theatre, Malvern, 01684 892277 13 Nov MR JONES (15) The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock 01952 728911 14 Nov MRS HARRIS GOES TO PARIS (2022) (PG) Ashford Carbonell VH 01584 831574 14 Nov SHOPLIFTERS (15) St Mary’s Church Hall, Ross on Wye 07789 778048 14 Nov LUZZU (15) Garway Hall 01600 750465 15 Nov ARE YOU THERE GOD? food The George, Ludlow

T

HE George was once a genuine Georgian town pub with its own large assembly room upstairs, set on Castle Square. Over the last couple of decades, however, it has been through a protracted metamorphosis since it was bought by one of the wicked pub cos and visibly deteriorated. Undecorative vegetation sprouted from gutters and gaps between bricks and render crumbled. Unloved and devoid of dignity, the assembly room had become a scruffy disco, unconvincingly named the ‘G-Spot’. The pubco let it to some amateur operators who ran it as a kind of bistro called The Marches, until, as Mr Pernickety predicted, its speedy demise. By that time, the pubco, now deservedly strapped for cash after years of exploiting hapless would-be landlords, gave up and sold the freehold to the already overstretched Pizza Express which had for some years systematically expanded and abused a fine, fresh 60s concept and its distinctive logo. As Mr P foretold in the Woolly Organ (December 2015), this didn’t work for the anonymous international franchise they had become. While the nation was in the grip of the pandemic, the building was bought by a brave and clearly confident group called Oakman Inns. Founded only sixteen years ago, the company has expanded rapidly, and Mr P was interested to see what they could do with the poor old George. He did hope that they might open up the front, with tables spilling out onto the pavement. Sadly not, though, at the back of the building, they have inserted a large open area with a good number of tables, screening them with discreet planting from the public lavatories opposite. Mr Pernickety and his Lovely Companion at a busy opening party had seen from the comprehensive re-ordering of the place that it had been done by people who had thought through the process and knew what they were doing. Although Mr P instinctively prefers establishments with an identifiable patina to them and signs of appreciative use, the old bars have a comfortable air to them. Most inventive has been the ranging of the restaurant on three sides around the open space, with an open-plan kitchen set along one wall. It all looked promising, but first of course, he had to eat there. He decided to take as a supplementary critic, his old gastronomic chum, the Wrinkle-Rocker.

24

In the bar beforehand the W-R chose an obscure Greek wine made from the Assyrtiko grape; Mr P enjoyed it more than he expected when he drank it too with Moules Mariniere to start. The moules were in a good wine and cream sauce and served with grilled sourdough bread to soak it up. The Wrinkle-Rocker was smacking his lips over Buttermilk Fried Calamari in coat of soft breadcrumbs. The diners agreed that they were both pleasingly uplifted by their starters. The place was about half-full, and not too noisy, with the added benefit of sensible, sound absorbing panels on the ceiling, making it easier to hear the drole

anecdotes and sage reflections on life that Mr P and the W-R like to exchange. There was slight pause in service, although not vexingly so, before the main courses appeared. A fuller restaurant might have made this worse, but it would be fair to say that service was attentive and good-natured, although Mr P was made to wince at the hideous practice of being told, in the imperative, to ‘Enjoy!’ – a habit quite acceptable, possibly, in downtown Brooklyn, but not anywhere in Britain. Mr P ordered a glass of Cote du Rhone to drink with his main course, but there was none in the cellar. He switched to a Pinot Noir from the Pay d’Oc which was good but at £8.50 the glass, somewhat over-priced, as indeed most of the wines appeared to be. The Pollo Picante – half a boneless chicken – he ate for a main course was well conceived, distinctive and strongly flavoured, with a good harissa mayonnaise, garlic & basil marinated Marzanino tomatoes, well-dressed rocket and French fries. The place makes much of its careful sourcing of ingredients, naming their butcher, the excellent D W Wall & Sons, and their use of genuinely free-range chicken, which should and does cost more than the white, flavourless fluffy fowl that penny-pinching restaurants serve, which led Mr P not to object too much to a price of £19.50. His companion, the W-Rocker had been told the pizzas were outstanding, and decided to sample one with prosciutto e funghi about which he wasn’t as excited as he expected to be. Mr P didn’t try it, but it had the right look about it, good bubbly edges of soft dough and plenty of ham. Several of the puddings were off, but they had a serving of Spiced Sourdough Sticky Toffee Pudding, which wasn’t exceptional. On the whole, they felt they’d eaten well, in a good ambience, music so quiet and bland as to be no more than a faint background presence. Mr P will eat at The George again from time to time, as long as it stays reliable, and he can’t identify anything that the operators have got wrong. He only hopes they haven’t overestimated the numbers and wealth of the local population. The bill for dinner was £101. Mr Pernickety - info@misterpermickety.com

grass roots Danger at the sharp end of climate science

I

HAVE a high regard for climate change researchers, most of whom spend their careers to trying to enlighten us about global heating, and issuing warnings to which most people merely pay lip service. At times this century this has earned them little more than abuse and opprobrium. I am thinking especially of the so-called Climategate row around 2009 and 2010, when concerted attacks were made against academics at the University of East Anglia. This was after thousands of their private emails had been hacked, stolen, and released on the internet. As a result, the scientists were hit by a tsunami of hate mail. It turned out that much of the abuse was orchestrated by climate change denialists in the USA linked to fossil fuel interests. The East Anglia team underwent at least three exhaustive investigations, including one by a parliamentary committee at Westminster, whose hearings I attended. After months of probing, the worst that could be proved against the scientists was that, in a very few instances, they had used misleading language in their private messages to each other. But their sudden exposure to the glare of such brutal publicity led one or two of the academics to have suicidal thoughts. Recently I have learned of more direct safety risks run by glaciologists, when they are scrambling about in the icy wastes, either in the Antarctic or the Arctic, or among the rapidly retreating, and dwindling glaciers elsewhere. In the long term, perhaps the greatest threat from melting ice is its effect on sea levels. If, and when, all the ice on Greenland melts, sea levels will be raised by about seven metres. In case that sounds a lot, the Antarctic ice cap holds enough ice to raise the level of the oceans by getting on for ten times as much in the long term. Before 2010 the expected rise in sea levels by 2100 from Arctic and Antarctic ice was being put at a few inches. But some climate scientists were making more worrying estimates. This wasn’t alarmism, as the denialists like to call it. These were predictions based on rigorous science and research. One of those questioning the lower figures was Swiss glaciologist, Professor Konrad Steffen. Steffen did much of his work in hazardous locations. During a typical research trip, he might spend weeks camped out on the windswept Petermann Glacier, in North West Greenland, from a base pitched at an altitude of 4,000 feet. Known as the Swiss Camp, this had been set up back in 1990. It was the first of several bases Steffen and his colleagues operated in Greenland.

50

By three years ago Steffen reckoned that, by the end of this century, sea levels could rise by a metre or so. A shocking figure, as it was several times the maximum sea level rise being spoken of a decade or two ago.

Petermann Glacier, N.W. Greenland

Sadly, Steffen did not live long enough to see how sea levels would fare in this decade. For in August 2020, during another Greenland research trip, he went missing on the Petermann Glacier. Colleagues were nearby, but no one saw exactly what happened. From what they could piece together, Steffen had fallen into one of the many crevasses that had formed on the glacier in recent years, and which had multiplied, not least due the rapid acceleration in Arctic ice melting. Since then, another glacier near to Petermann has been named the Steffen Glacier to commemorate the Swiss professor’s ground-breaking work. Steffen’s research had also taken him on a number of trips to Antarctica. But it was his work in the work in the Arctic which had led him, as early as in 2002, to sound the alarm about the accelerating pace of polar ice melting. Since Steffen’s untimely death, researchers have obtained fresh data amply supporting his fears over the pace of melting of the ice sheets. One such team is led by a charismatic Frenchman, Professor Eric Rignot. Much of his work has focused on the Petermann Glacier. He reports data suggesting sea level rises by 2100 of a magnitude far greater than anything that hitherto seemed possible. Rignot speaks of ice dynamics which make glaciers far more vulnerable to melting than was guessed a decade or two ago. Rignot has said, “These dynamics are not included in the models, and if we were to include them it would increase projections of sea level rise by up to 200 per cent – not just for Petermann (glacier) but for all glaciers ending in the ocean, which is most of northern Greenland and all of Antarctica.” I won’t even try to list the places that are vulnerable to such a scale of sea level rise. But they include most important cities around the globe. So those buying a house in the next fifty years would do well to check its altitude! Julian O’Halloran

SHADOW WORK, COUNSELLING & EXPERIENTIAL PSYCHOTHERAPEUTIC PROCESS Facilitated shadow work is a type of embodied psychotherapy rooted in depth psychology. I work in longer sessions, typically 5-hours. These deep-dive one-to- one sessions allow a shame free space to develop within which to identify, explore and transform those habitual, ingrained or unconscious patterns, beliefs or behaviours that trap us and hold us back from living full and joyful lives. This work holds the potential for deep personal growth, and deep healing and is the place to dive real deep into difficulty and challenge, shame or guilt, your grief, your fear or rage. The holding I offer you is both sensitive and strong, and you are invited to bring anything you wish to our work together.
