ERY surprised while picking up a newspaper at Spar to see the Glimmer Twins and Ronnie’s mugs on the front page of every newspaper! For a minute I thought they had gone on to a better place, but no it was the first new album for donkeys years called Hackney Diamonds. I must admit I did go home and have a listen to the first single off it – Angry (not very keen) but as is the way with YouTube I got diverted to a film of The Stones and Bob Dylan playing ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ together in 1998 at a concert in Argentina!! Have a look it is absolutely hilarious.
I suspect the boys skimped a bit on rehearsals. The band sounds fine but Mick and Bob forget to work out who was going to sing which bit. Bob nattily done up as the town doctor in a 50’s cowboy film completely misses his intro and from that point on things go from bad to worse. Mick decided to dress down for once and is resplendent in Adidas tracky bottoms and a rather creased T shirt but he forgot to learn half the lyrics. However he does prance around the stage a lot and whips up the massive Argentinian crowd who go apeshit for the whole thing. Meanwhile Bob sticks to his mic stand like glue, however much Ronnie tries to get him to crack a smile or jig about a bit. Keith sensibly stays well clear of the front line shenanigans.
Still both Bob and the Stones get lots of brownie points for not having to stage massively hyped come back tours because they never went away. They both just carried on gigging at a furious rate. Bob has played over 4,000 concert gigs in his life and that easily trumps the Stones measly 2,500. He would be a millionaire if he only charged £250 per concert but I bet he charges more than that. Meanwhile the Searchers have been in constant demand for 66 years and even better, Norwegian singer Helge Toft with three othe musicians, played 65 different concerts in one day at venues around the city of Haugesund, Norway.
But that’s quite enough interesting facts for now. So, stand by all you teetotallers and people who shout rude words at cyclists. It’s over a year since the last Pete’s Pub to Pub Cycle Route so before winter sets in here is a nice gentle roam around the black and white trail.
The Cross Inn Eardisland to the Crown Inn Dilwyn to the Monkland Arms Monkland
Starting in the picturesque village of Eardisland, The Cross Inn has recently been getting a good reputation for very classy, pub grub and interesting Saturday night specials (anyone for rich braised venison haunch casserole topped with fluffy horseradish scones). You can sit out front and watch the world go by or hideaway in the garden seating out the back and this is an Andy pic of what I ate there on Wednesday (cooked over charcoal). But come on, finish that glass of Rioja we have places to go. Come out of Eardisland heading for Pembridge but take the first left signposted to Burton Court. At the end of that lane cross over the A44 and go straight on signpost Lower Burton and then take the second unsignposted left turn. Then go straight across at the A4112 and then a left and a right will take into Dilwyn. The Crown Inn is in the middle of the village and does a natty line in tapas if you haven’t stuffed yourself down the road. It’s open Tuesday to Sunday. Still no time to hang about, come out of the pub and turn left signpost Stretford, Kings Pyon. You are now on an a brilliant bit of straight, flood plain road with amazing views and giant skies, then with just a right and left at the A4110 you can follow this lane all the way to Ivington. Then turn left and when you hit the sign for Newtown (no, not that Newtown you idiot) turn left again which brings you onto the A44. Turn left and a quick blast down the main road brings you to Monkland for a bit of music session at the pub if it’s the 1st Friday or the 3rd Wednesday of the month or a cheesy bite at Monkland Dairy if its lunch or teatime.

“Some days it’s a good day and the fish are near the surface like a shoal of words.”
I am sat on a three legged stool under a great green umbrella, fishing rod poised at the correct angle, watching the lake fill up; the surface is all rings and bubbles. It’s raining cats and dogs but yet there are no fish.
Not a bite all day, but I don’t care. My mind, my float, it floats.
And then bobs momentarily, “Littoral, literary or literal?” rises to the surface and seconds later my float twitches again: “Alliteration, assonance and rhyme give false logic to a thought.” So It says! This is at least a tiddler. I copy it into my keepbook then let it slip back in the water, … and return to my dappled thoughts under this green shade.
I spent yesterday on the sofa also watching murky images stream by, feeling just as lethargic, dabbling with words and fishing half-heartedly for the scarce ideas that lurk somewhere between the world and me.
It is then that I have to watch Norwegian slow TV. The unedited train journeys are the best; a web-cam is mounted in the driver’s cab, and for hours and hours Nordic rocks and snow and lakes unfold on either side in real time - fancy that! - real … time! - uncut, while the hypnotic rails narrow towards the permanently elusive vanishing point. Narcoleptic TV.
And today I’m so tired that I can hardly keep my eyes open, I’m wandering around the margins, or perhaps the river has risen and I’m viewing the world through a periscope.
It’s all too far away.
I fall asleep watching the patterns move across the water, half listening to the distant thunder that follows the lightning of other people’s ideas, only attached to my senses by a slender thread, a helium balloon tethered to a doll. In my dream I galumph after my elusive quarry, whiffling through the tulgey wood, a chimerical image in the wavey forest of kelp, like King Pellinore in pursuit of the Questing Beast. We’re in the submarine Forest Sauvage. This is another tiddler, a crass pun, typical of dreams: Chimaera is a genuine genus of fish species, ghost fishes, shadow fishes, and spook-fishes, while a Chimera is a classic corps exquise or heads, bodies and legs thing composed of several animals, like the Questing Beast, Giraffes, the Jabberwock or Tom Waits’
Then I dream that I have wandered off to the bar mid-song looking for my drink and leaving my sax to play its solo on its own…. what does that mean? Does it matter? Did I lose count of the bars? Eventually I wake and my brain and I settle down to argue a few points in sequence, like whether one should rely on dreams to even formulate questions, let alone answers… do they mean anything at all? If not? … what are dreams? By-products? But without them we get weird in the head. More collateral images drift by …. “Answers came there none…. for they’d eaten every one”, “snicker-snack!” and “the rest is silence” “Never more… nevermore”. The cry echoes from shore to shore…….
Finally a fully formed dream arrives on the flood and takes the bait; this is Caliban’s dream which I keep in an inside pocket near my heart:
“Be not afeard; the isle is full of noises, Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight, and hurt not. Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments Will hum about mine ears; and sometime voices, That, if I then had waked after long sleep, Will make me sleep again: and then, in dreaming, The clouds methought would open, and show riches Ready to drop upon me; that, when I waked, I cried to dream again.” Shakespeare, The Tempest: III: 2. Which I would have on my gravestone.

Visit Ledbury’s purpose built, intimate theatre with comfortable seats, bar and a warm welcome, for a great programme of original drama, music, cinema and live screenings - see listings for what’s onTHE ink was barely dry on the September issue of this magazine when, under the leadership of Cllr Harry Bramer, Hereford Council’s newly-elected administration announced that it was scuppering the idea of relocating the city’s Lending & Reference Library to its Maylord shopping centre (a piece of commendable lateral thinking), opting instead to refurbish Sir Robert Smirke’s ornate Grecian Shire Hall overlooking St Peter’s Square. Footfall-for-footfall, I’d guess the Maylord location is at least four times busier than St Peter’s Square. And don’t forget that shortly after it opened it picked up a UNESCO design award.
Barely a month into office and the council’s ‘new brooms’ were thumbing their noses at the £2.5-million Levelling Up Ministry grant on offer; shrugging their shoulders that the fees wasted on feasibility studies probably exceed £100,00; or the lost rental income from leaving four units standing empty in the Maylord Centre for the best part of six months. This was payback time, with a vengeance. Four years almost to the day the Indies had savaged the plan for a west crossing of the Wye, wasting £10-million in aborted design fees in the process.
Now, for the foreseeable future, the city’s only public library and reference source will be housed in temporary accommodation in Friars Street (try stopping a shopper in High Town and asking them to direct you to Friars Street). For the moment the plan to transform the 1874 Kempson building in Broad Street into a Museum & Art Gallery opening in 2024, remains unaffected. But I shouldn’t hold your breath. The council’s bean counters would do well to remember that Levelling Up grants are conditional on being spent by the time the next General Election is called.
Notwithstanding the £7.5-million roof repair bill which hangs over the Smirke building, HC seems to imagine that architectural transformations can be achieved “just like that”, as the late Tommy Cooper would have put it. They can’t. Smirke’s masterwork (the British Museum) took 25 years to complete; his Shire Hall - built under his supervision by Charles Heatherwent up in just two years – and it shows: a labyrinth of gloomy committee rooms, a library, two courtrooms, a custody suite and an acoustically-flawed Assembly Hall. It would take fully five years to pull the old place into shape. Meanwhile, the Maylord Centre is about to lose Wilko, its biggest tenant. 2000sq ft on one ground floor level, two entrances, acres of empty shelving. Make a lovely library!
A landmark London ruling, handed down by one of Britain’s most respected Planning Inspectors, may thankfully have scuppered the chances of the crackpot idea of demolishing Hereford’s largest tourism hotel – presently being used by Mrs Braverman to house Rwanda-bound immigrants – to make way for a Lidl supermarket. The site is on Belmont Road, mid-way between the Tesco and Asda superstores.
Conservationists up and down the land breathed a sigh of relief in July when Michael Gove published his Inspector’s report into Marks & Spencer’s application to demolish its Art Deco store in Orchard Street, Marble Arch, alongside Selfridges, replacing it with an office block. The store was said to be Margaret Thatcher’s favourite retail experience. The lead conservationist group SAVE (who campaigned against the redevelopment with The Twentieth Century Society and Architects Journal) estimated that the needless demolition of the building would have generated almost 40 000 tonnes of embodied carbon. M&S didn’t exactly help its case when it placed on record at the start of the Inquiry its intention to quit Oxford Street altogether if the decision went against it.
So what has all this got to do with Belmont Road, Hereford? Simply that important national planning decisions must be treated as what lawyers would term ‘case law’. In the same way that Mr Gove was unimpressed by M&S’s disregard for net zero issues, Herefordshire’s planners would do well to reject the idea of demolishing a perfectly serviceable (if architecturally unremarkable) hotel, once its residents have been transported to the 500-berth Bibby Stockholm.

When, at the end of October 2003, the first Glasbury Exhibition was held it was intended to be a ‘one off’ event and no one even thought about what would happen 20 years later. Yet not only are we celebrating our 20th anniversary but can now see it led to the formation of Glasbury Arts. To celebrate, we are taking a trip down memory lane with some of the artists who have provided so much interest, style, and beauty over that prolonged period. We have not been able to invite everyone back as the numbers run into the hundreds, but we hope our choice will not only bring back images from the past but also transport us up to the present. Come and join over 30 Artists on this fascinating journey, that as always, will contain some surprises.

Three films here which in different ways reflect on the architecture of love and like last year’s AFTERSUN, British writer/director, Charlotte Regan’s debut feature covers the sometimes poignant, sometimes troubling and often goofy relationship between an adolescent girl, Georgie (hugely gifted newcomer, Lola Campbell) and her errant, single-parent father Jason (Harris Dickenson, impressive lead in TRIANGLE OF SADNESS). In this case after her mother has mysteriously died, Georgie manages to support herself in her council estate home by stealing bicycles – and cunningly avoiding overstretched social services – when up tips her bad dad and Regan’s film, shot in saturated colours by Molly Manning Walker, charts their initially uneasy relationship as they begin to enjoy and trust each other. The comedic, bantering nature of their blossoming reunion is quirkily enhanced by commentary from third parties, including some darling, sing-songy triplets and cartoon characters, the result proving decidedly feel-good whilst neatly avoiding temptations of the mawkish. Playwright Celine Song make her feature film directorial debut with an astonishingly assured and shrewdly moving romantic drama that’s right up there with BRIEF ENCOUNTER. Set across three continents and three decades it charts the course of three lives centred around Nora (Greta Lee), who we first meet briefly being spoken about in a bar where, out of earshot, she’s in deep discussion with two men, Arthur (John Meguro) and her follow Korean, Hae Sung (Teo Yoo). But we are quickly flashbacked to her childhood in Seoul where her family are preparing to emigrate to Canada and she’s saying farewell to her then classmate, Hae. 24 years later Hae visits New York where the married Nora is now living and despite the different paths of their past lives, Song’s deft script and direction, which assiduously avoids melodrama and mush, makes us ponder forks in the road and consider how a different course might have altered one’s identity. Totally terrific.

Two screen giants, Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson pull out all the emotional stops they’re capable of – Jackson for the last time in her career as she died shortly after filming – based on the true story of Bernard Jordan (Caine), the 89 year-old who absconded from the Sussex care home where he lives with his dying wife, Rene (Jackson) to attend the 70th anniversary of the D-day landings. We are amused and impressed by Bernard’s cunning escape, and once he’s made it to France, he’s moved by tales of his fellow veterans’ bravery and indeed the folly of a war fought with old soldiers from the opposite side who also attend. Their reminiscences are handled straightforwardly but Billy Parker’s script doesn’t shy away from appropriate poignancy and director Oliver Parker (MADE IN DAGENHAM) pushes things along at a pace which doesn’t allow for undue pathos but the greatest treat is witnessing the chemistry between it’s two stars.

HERE Monmouthshire and Herefordshire meet on the banks of the Monnow is the small village of Skenfrith. It clusters around its 800 year old church and the still standing walls of a stout Norman castle close by the river. On hot days, this lazy winding waterway becomes a laughing, shrieking children’s riviera, full of young wild swimmers enjoying the cold clear water in a way that is forbidden by many selfish riparian landowners up and down its length. Mr Pernickety found it a heartening sight and, on the hottest day of the year he was almost tempted to cast off his foulard, linen shirt and cotton chinos and plunge in too.
However, the point of his visit to Skenfrith was too pressing; he and his Lovely Companion, having taken the day off to potter around this beautifully undulating but much overlooked and undersubscribed corner of the Marches were going to review the food at the Bell Inn Hotel which had been built in the 17th century on a crossing of the river as a coaching inn. Up until the Millenium, it remained a charming, but undistinguished hostelry for undemanding trout-fishers and the local farmers, until it was bought by a wealthy local family, who poured money and affection into sprucing the place up. Mr P organised a lunch there for the Scribblers of the Marches shortly after that but hadn’t been back since. In 2015 it was sold to the woman who currently owns it and expanded it, with more redecoration, to create a proudly independent ‘boutique’ hotel, offering eleven large, well-furnished bedrooms.
Approaching from the east, crossing the Monnow bridge, it immediately appears, not grand, but handsome from the outside. With all its extensions built at the rear, the inside is unexpectedly spacious. There is a warm, comfortable bar, which looks as if it might not be too friendly for local farmers (or their tractor drivers), which leads into the dining-room – in principle a good space: wide, light and low-ceilinged. Sitting at one of only three tables occupied that Saturday lunch time, Mr P and the LC weren’t immediately comfortable; the ambience of the room is marred by an absence of softening textiles. There are no carpets on the bare wooden floor, no curtains around the big windows, no napery dressing the tables, and so nothing to mop up the extraneous sounds of other people’s conversations and – God help us – their laughter, at the same time sucking most of the warmth from the atmosphere. It presents a somewhat bleak air, desperately filled with bizarre and not especially attractive objets that look as if they’ve come out of a catalogue of ‘things to make a room look more interesting’, chosen by an aspiring but untrained decorator. Everything is a bit new and ersatz, badly pretending to be antique: bird cages that have never seen parrot poo, cachepots supported by brassy ceramic bunnies, faux ‘30s lamps placed at odd angles, a number of pictures too small for the walls on which they hang, all presented with a background sound of barely
audible but thoroughly irritating second-rate pop-music. Mr P’s readers may wonder why he drones on about the internal appearance of restaurants, but it is simply that the surroundings are as much part of the dining experience as the cuisine and the service. Relaxed diners in a pleasing space are bound to enjoy their meal more.
In the case of The Bell, the quality of the food and service go a long way to compensating for the anonymous, unstimulating atmosphere. An interesting menu, with some promising combinations of ingredients has clearly been drawn up by an ambitious chef. To start with, the LC ate Brixham crab with cucumber, caviar and dill, a dish which gave her a great boost after a hot morning, along with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc which she liked. Mr P helped himself a forkful of crab and found the flavour and texture quite magical. His own carpaccio served with crunchy roasted hazel nuts seeds, celeriac and mustard remoulade achieved the same lift in his mood.
He ordered roast lamb for his main course, puzzled when he was told that that the way it was presented did not lend itself to being served rare, which he wanted. He couldn’t comprehend this until the dish arrived, The meat, instead of being carved in slices, arrived as two large, oblong chunks – a first for Mr P. But he managed to overcome any prejudice against the unfamiliar approach and began to enjoy this new texture to a supremely good piece of lamb, the potato pattie and perfect broccoli that accompanied it, along with a glass of surprisingly good Romanian Pinot Noir house wine. The LC had been served a fine length of pork tenderloin, wrapped in serrano ham – the charcuterie and succulent meat providing a contrast which enhanced the enjoyment of both. Afterwards, they shared a plate of amazing raspberry frangipane tart, and both declared the food and the impeccably polite service beyond criticism. Mr P would like to eat there again (despite the high cost of £121 with a glass of house wine each) in the (possibly vain) hope that the owner might have popped into Baileys up the road in Bridstow and refurnished with their lovely warm, liveable look.

OR the last two decades enthusiasts for nuclear power have routinely been announcing a nuclear “renaissance” every year or so. One of the more recent people to do this is Grant Shapps. He is a Conservative minister. Maybe even a secretary of state. I am not sure, because, every time one checks up on his job, it seems to have changed.
But I can tell you that around July this year Shapps played a part in launching a “Great British Nuclear Vehicle”. This is not some kind of spacecraft, or a new electric car, powered by its own nuclear reactor.
It is actually “an arm’s length body”, we are told, and its role is to do with “helping projects through every stage of the development process and developing a resilient pipeline of new builds”.
I apologise at once for quoting such awful gobbledegook, but this is the way our politicians, and their minions, seem to speak, or write, these days. And what on earth is an arm’s length body? What exactly is it an arm’s length from? Its head? Or perhaps its brain? No! It clearly doesn’t have one of those.
Great British Nuclear, whatever it is, seems to be a new way of keeping central government at a distance from the dreadful mess that is UK energy policy. Let me give you the words of Shapps himself. He says, “…we are seeing the first brush strokes of our nuclear power renaissance to power up Britain and grow our economy for decades to come.”
In the last decade or two there have been plans for three nuclear power stations. The one nearest to completion is Hinkley Point in Somerset. The idea for this plant seems to go back to the David Cameron era, or maybe earlier. But its completion slides further into the future with every year that goes by. Back in 2015 it was estimated to cost £18 billion. By now the price has ballooned to nearly £33 billion. A second nuclear station is planned for Sizewell in Suffolk. But a third, on the island of Anglesey, was scrapped in 2021.
My own jaundiced view of the nuclear power industry, and its friends in government, is that small modular reactors will mean that each bit of bad news, about missed deadlines, ballooning costs, and vast delays, will be smaller and less noticeable than those we are already familiar with in the history of the much larger reactors at Hinkley Point and Sizewell.
But it’s a fair bet that, because the new smaller reactors will be first-of-a-kind technology, they will undergo many of the same development problems and headaches suffered by that the current generation of larger reactors.
And what about the Americans? It seems that, in the USA, a Dept. of Energy program to design and build small modular reactors has been, for the last half a decade and more, a story of chopping and changing,
and frustrated ambitions. In short, their guys have done little better than ours!
In the UK, some of the big questions facing small modular reactors have been laid out by Steve Thomas, Emeritus Professor of Energy Policy at Greenwich University. They go like this: What is the basis of claims that they can be cheaper than large reactors? Are there small modular reactor designs ready to be built? How can the economics of these reactors be tested? And so on….
One suspects he knows the answers and that they may well hold bad news for the advocates of this latest “nuclear renaissance.” Professor Thomas has consistently asked the difficult questions about nuclear power during the several decades I have known him. And he can reel off the unsubstantiated claims made for nuclear power during his career at the drop of a hat.
They go like this - *costs will be dramatically reduced *construction times will be shortened *safety will be improved *technical issues have been solved. Professor Thomas says that up to now, “…such claims have proved hopelessly optimistic and there is no reason to believe things would turn out differently this time.”
The latest government push for small modular reactors began as long ago as in 2016. This program hardly got going and its seems the plans were re-launched in 2019. But even by the start of this year, the latest nuclear renaissance was still stuttering and making little progress.
According to Prof Thomas, “…none of the six new designs for small modular reactors in January 2023 has received support from the UK government.” And he points out that the actual deployment of these small reactors is unlikely at any real scale before 2035, which will make them too late to play any useful part in the battle to curb climate change.
So basically, for all you nuclear boffins and advocates, it looks like it’s back to the drawing board!

SHADOW WORK, COUNSELLING & EXPERIENTIAL PSYCHOTHERAPEUTIC PROCESS Facilitated shadow work is a type of embodied psychotherapy rooted in depth psychology. I work in longer sessions, typically 5-hours. These deep-dive one-to- one sessions allow a shame free space to develop within which to identify, explore and transform those habitual, ingrained or unconscious patterns, beliefs or behaviours that trap us and hold us back from living full and joyful lives. This work holds the potential for deep personal growth, and deep healing and is the place to dive real deep into difficulty and challenge, shame or guilt, your grief, your fear or rage. The holding I offer you is both sensitive and strong, and you are invited to bring anything you wish to our work together. Find out more about shadow work and schedule a free 20-minute consultation at: www.inner-truth.co.uk - Alasdair Kirk07792 405 660.
