NCE upon a time (as I remember it), I was happy. If I wanted to hear some music I put on a record. If I wanted to see a film (or have sex), I went to the cinema. If I wanted to see a band I went to the pub. If I wanted to see an orchestra I went to the Festival Hall. If I wanted to watch telly I went to the ‘front’ room. If I wanted to listen to the radio I went for a drive and if I wanted to see a comedian, I went to a Northern Working Men’s Club and most importantly, if I wanted to see a play, I put on my best bib and tucker and went to Theatre Royal (irrespective of which city I happened to be in). Unfortunately, if I happened to need a computer I had to go to NASA headquarters in Florida! Nowadays all those certainties have been swept away. We live in a foggy, cloudy indistinct world. Everybody is watching films on their telly. Listening to music on their phones. Going to clubs to listen to people scratching records. Watching the Small Ads 4 T.V. on their laptops. Talking on the phone in their cars. Talking on their phones in bars. Talking on their bloody phones, bloody everywhere, or often just standing Philosophy 6 gormlessly staring at them as if a genie might be about to jump out of them and Art 8 enlighten them about how to take their next breath. But of all those lost certainties Art workshops 12 the one we can depend on is the theatre. At least they can’t bugger around with that or it just becomes a T.V. programme or a film. Cinema 16 Well... here’s some news for you, apparently ‘they’ can. Last month I went to Dance 20 see ‘The Curious Incident of The Dog In The Night-Time’ at the National Theatre, Food 22 only I was sitting in Ludlow Assembly Rooms! Some clever little so and so at the Music 24 National has thought ‘well if we can’t fit anymore Muhammads in the mountain, we’ll just show them pictures of the mountain down at Muhammad’s local. (This is no Music workshops 34 reflection on Islam by the way, just my humorous use of a famous saying). Venues 37 There I am sitting in Ludlow Assembly Rooms watching a live, very high quality Band directory 38 feed of what’s going on at the South Bank with a cynical sneer on my mug and I am forced to admit it was pretty brilliant. The filming was top notch, the production was Theatre 40 great and from certain angles (like overhead) you were definitely getting a better Word 44 experience than the people actually there at the theatre. In fact it was so convincGreen pages 46 ing that at the end of the screening everybody started wildly applauding, although quite what they were clapping, I have no idea. The stewards? The bloke who’d Comp therapies 48 started the projector? Now obviously if it was a badly filmed rubbish production, the We take no whole experience wouldn’t be much fun but my point is that it is definitely another responsibility for new confusing way of imbibing our culture and one can’t help wonder what the long the veracity of the term effect might be. information herein Meanwhile back at Broad Sheep H.Q. I’ve been re-bitten by the film-making bug. It’s been about a year now since I last fancied myself as Martin Scorsese and as a Pete Mustill consequence I haven’t been keeping up with my You Tube hits, so I was pleasantly Mayfield, Stapleton, surprised to see that my Moishes Bagel video and the Remi Harris one have both Nr Presteigne, Powys accumulated more than 3000 hits and Martin Harley has just hit 10,000. However, LD8 2LS I was equally dismayed to see that my Joan Bakewell (Tart) masterwork had only Tel: 01544 260051 managed a measly 68. Email: info@broadsheep.com Still never fear, last week I completed my latest blockbuster, ‘I Feel Like Ginger Website: www.broadsheep.com Rogers’ starring the brilliant Lori Campbell, only this time, instead of just sticking the band in my front room, I got to actually construct a bit of a narrative. I even got to order people around a bit. “Look happy”. “Look Sad”. “Come in that door and sit there” etc etc. By the end of the weekend I felt not so much like Scorsese, more sort of Robert Altman! Then, as with everything in life, I had to spend the next two days stuck in front of a bleeding computer trying to stick it all together. This made the next weekend particularly interesting because it was the Mid Border Arts fundraiser and along with a bit of a curry and a showing of ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ it was a chance to hear both Deborah Moggach and Tony Lawson speak about their experiences in the film world. Deborah wrote the book that ‘Best Exotic’ was based on, but has also written lots of screenplays for film and television so is well versed in the whiles of the film world and knows how happy they are to play fast and loose with the written word. Tony, on the other hand is a top film editor and has worked with lots of the big directors, particularly Stanley Kubrick and Neil Jordan and, as he tells it, the editor’s job is the key to any film’s success. Sure the director can shoot this car chase, this love scene, this angry exchange, but it is not until the editor starts to put them together that they have any meaning. It’s the editor who initially decides which shot is important and which is not and often has the job of cutting whole characters out of films that are too long and of course adding the most important ingredient – the music. I suddenly felt very different about my two days of hacking bits of video together on the trusty Dell. This was no boring chore, this was the creative heart of the film. Anyway I leave you to decide whether or not I should go for directors or the editor’s gong at next year’s Oscars. Here is the Shopping Forecast

W

HAT a fabulous place is the grapevine. All human life is there: it’s like having your very own Google, but without the buttons. You hear all manner of things on the grapevine – some trivial, others important. You get to learn about the latest scandal, scathing comments on husbands and wives, even useful tips on how to cook asparagus. Just the other day, on the grapevine, someone was talking about a group of people who apparently need extra help, particularly at Christmas. She explained that we ought to feel sorry for the many incomers to our area – people from Poland, Romania, Bolivia, and so on, not to mention folk from even more remote and depressing places such as East Anglia. These people ‘from off’ – often with little more than a few phrases of faulty English - need urgent help to understand the ways of local people, even more so at Christmas, with Santa ready and waiting with his Claus newly sharpened. Christmas shopping will inevitably bring the two groups into close contact. So, eager as always to respond to calls for assistance, here are some suggestions for incomers to put into practice when shopping, and at the same time improve their command of our language, enter into the Christmas spirit and forge good rapport with the locals. First, in a supermarket. Here you have plenty of opportunity for conversation with natives. Obviously you won’t be able to find a single thing you’re searching for so ask an assistant for help. ‘Pardon me, my good woman, but would you be so kind as to indicate where I might find pieces of dead pig and turkey?’ Well done! You’ve made a good start. On leaving the supermarket, at the check-out always reach over to shake the hand of the person behind the till. They expect nothing less. A traditional cheery greeting such as ‘May every Yuletide joy be yours at this festive season’ will immediately cement a warm relationship. You will have created a positive impression and in the unlikely event of this action being mistaken for a grab-and-run attack, a quick word with the security staff and police will be a good opportunity for you to learn new vocabulary. Also, an expression of sympathy at the miserable basic weekly wage the supermarket is paying the checkout person will be much appreciated, especially if such

an expression can be given when there is a long queue behind you and within earshot. Something such as ‘I most earnestly hope that despite your minimal hourly wage you will be able to afford a modest gift for your little ones’. When visiting a smaller shop, perhaps a family business, remember that humour is always welcomed. The incomer could try a touch of irony: ‘Permit me to remark, sir, that your wife is not nearly as unattractive as you led me to believe.’ I have heard, on the grapevine, that this often breaks the ice with many male shopkeepers while their wives find the comment just too amusing for words. Humour, however, doesn’t always work straight away. A shopkeeper of my acquaintance, a man at the absolute peak of his career and running a fine shop, smiles if and only if the customer spends more than £10. Anything less and he’s morose. No amount of humour will make the slightest difference. [NB: He may well be related to the shop assistant referred to in April’s Broadsheep – the lady who has not smiled in front of a customer for 47 years.] Christmas is, of course, a wonderful time for very young children. So when you see parents with small children shopping for gifts you could ask them: ‘Do you not think it totally inappropriate to mislead your children by pretending that Santa actually exists when you know that he doesn’t? And by encouraging an attitude of rampant consumerism in the young are you not further endangering the planet?’ Such an approach is guaranteed to open up an interesting conversation which the children will find so fascinating that they feel obliged to take the matter up more fully with their parents later on. People coming to settle in these parts should know that locals love to spend huge sums of money at Christmas. After all, that’s what Christmas is about, isn’t it? So wherever people are shopping the visitor can try to spot the syndrome known as MMTS – ‘More Money Than Sense’. Look – a man buying musical candles: MMTS. And there – she’s choosing a Christmas card for the dog: MMTS. And what about him? – buying a pair of battery-operated self-warming slippers: MMTS. The visitor should feel free to show sympathy – ‘You have MMTS, don’t you?’ They will appreciate the concern. These suggestions, hopefully, will enhance the Christmas of both visitor and local. Enjoy! Philosopher-in-Residence

ISTER Pernickety has seldom – if ever –reviewed a restaurant in Leominster, where there are few obvious candidates. However, a few weeks ago, he and his Lovely Companion were caught late one evening returning home via Leominster after that dangerous watershed moment of 9.30pm, when chefs in most eating places in rural towns and villages have started putting on their coats to go home to bed, and the only remaining dining options are the scattered and varied ethnic restaurants whose staff will hang around all night as long as there’s a punter to be served. Mr P had a very distant memory of having eaten a passable meal of Sub-continental cuisine at a place called Jalalabad in Etnam Street. As soon as he and the LC sat down it was clear that whatever had been good about the place had long since departed or been abandoned. The food now on offer was barely better than that served at the atrocious John Spice’s at the Green Dagon Hotel in Hereford (see Broadsheep, July 2012) and the service was worse. Mr P is not going to waste time with a review, he merely offers a warning to those whose taste has not been heavily compromised by years of eating at Macdonalds, KFC or, indeed, John Spice’s in Hereford. Mr P won’t speculate on the reasons Leominster is so short of tolerable eating places, although it’s fair (and Mr P is always fair) to say that he has enjoyed an honest, well made and tasty Steak & Kidney pie from an authentic, oldfashioned pub menu at the Grape Vaults in Broad Street – a pub with a warm, friendly feel to it and, mercifully, no beastly ill-chosen music assaulting the punters’ ears. Mr P was also surprised to see in the last issue of Broadsheep that the Editor’s summary of his eating habits whilst on the road distributing his woolly organ didn’t include the Flying Dutchman in Leominster’s Corn Square. Unless he had been told he wouldn’t have guessed that above the small deli/coffee/sandwich bar, wedged between two narrow streets, is an agreeable, light, even quite chic restaurant, which serves as good a breakfast as he could have found for miles around. He could have had, for instance, an exotic Poached Eggs on Muffins with Cheese Sauce, or a combination of a high standard of any of the traditional elements of the Full English, served, in Mr P’s case, with an excellent cappuccino, at least as good as Costa’s and without the irritation of being ordered to “Enjoy!” They also serve lunches of well-priced, freshly prepared things like Spanish Omelette (£5.10) Cod’n’Chips’n’Peas (£5.99) Cajun Chicken with Salad & Couscous and a daily soup. Mr Pernickety, an enthusiast of good Italian cuisine following a youth spent in ’70s restaurants like San Frediano (died of natural causes) and Meridiana (knocked down and now Theo Fennell) in London’s Fulham Road, has always considered that any self-respecting town in Britain should support at least one authentic family run Italian restaurant. Milano in Leominster’s High Street, looks as if it might qualify, although Mr P has yet to try it and reports are only curate’s-eggish. Ludlow, sadly, has not such establishment, but recently an attempt has been made to fill that gap with the appearance two nights a week of an Italian restaurant at Bakers coffee shop in Tower Street.

Bakers is a perfectly good, well run café, though pretty pedestrian in its ambience and interior decoration, in which Mr P couldn’t imagine, for instance, Jean-Paul Sartre dunking his croissant and getting inspired. Usually open only during the day, they showed a positive initiative a few years ago when they invited Ludlow chef Clive Davis to house a pop-up restaurant there for three nights a week while he was preparing to open the excellent Green Café on Ludlow’s Millennium Green. This temporary eatery was a great success, and punters in the know felt they’d discovered a well-disguised gem. Now Bakers have decided to use their premises to hold Italian Nights on Fridays and Saturdays. On a recent Saturday evening, Mr P strode purposefully past the French Pantry (a favourite haunt, now with a well-deserved entry in the Guide Michelin) with the LC and the Children’s Menu Consultant on their way to try it. Disappointingly though not surprisingly, the place looked just like Bakers during the day with the exception of small votive candles on the tables competing vainly against the bland everyday lighting. Mr P would have been more content with tall candles dripping down old straw-clad Chianti bottles, but apart from a splash of red, white and green on the menus there was little even faintly Italian going on. Musically the closest it got was Nancy Sinatra (not even her Dad), singing about her aggressive footwear. Why not Verdi or Puccini, or even Mario Lanza and O Sole Mio? This lack of Italian simpatico augured gastronomic disappointment. Mr P’s Pork escallop was overcooked, dry, with a blob of pesto round the edge and mozzarella to imply its Italian credentials. The chef is clearly not Italian, as born out by a depressing English ‘pub-grub’ side dish of boiled carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and green beans. The LC’s lasagne could, she said (reluctant as ever to criticize to too harshly) have come from Waitrose. Only the CMC was happy with his choice of Magarita pizza, which seemed freshly made and smelled good, was thin, crusty and so big that the LC had to take half of it home to feed to him on another occasion. Mr P commends Bakers for trying to offer something for which there is an obvious need in Ludlow, and is only sorry that they have not made sufficient commitment to make it work.
