What’s On - Herefordshire & The Marches

Vintage History I

WAS poking around in my cupboard yesterday, looking for a large to small jack plug adapter, when I stumbled across the first published issue of Broad Sheep. To my horror, I realised it was dated December 1992 and we’d just missed a fabulous marketing opportunity. ‘The 20th Anniversary Facsimile Memorial Issue of Broad Sheep Magazine’ blah, blah, blah. Still, since I’m not that clever about years and dates and things it’s not surprising that it skipped my mind, but better late than never and anyway it’s high time we jumped on the vintage bandwagon. The first issue is a photocopied four-page affair. It contains three adverts and although it’s layed up in black and white with prit-stick and photocopied illustrations, courtesy Robert Crumb, it does look like the print was produced by Nicola on some early word processor (BBC, Sinclair?). The listings are just music gigs, but it’s comforting to see some familier names there - Blake III, The Hoola Boola Boys, Joe Le Taxi and strangely enough Johnny G, who although I haven’t seen him for years, I’ve just booked to play at The Fair in the Square in Hay next week. Anyway here is the first ever editorial which serves two purposes. 1. To show how little our philosophy has changed. 2. It saves me writing one this afternoon - (writer’s block!)

hugh’s bit

Wipe Out: a digital delirium FIT THE FIRST: Last night’s nightmare. My world was deprived of the 3rd dimension, i.e. depth, and everything went flat. Flatworld had come to pass. My inner space turned into a screen, an interface. Web-sites, documents, films, spread-sheets, out of focus jpegs, news clips and wave-forms vyed for space and flashed across my synapses like an indiscriminate music video made by a brat on speed. The browser reeled off strings of random symbols and took me off to an obscure band from Powys(http://www.youtube. com/watch?v=aQ6vFyVPc9s) whilst fragments of a photoshop image I’d been working on rained down like the after effects of a tornado in a city dump. Windscreen wipers were then attached to my lobe-to-lobe visual dream-field and after each pass of the blade a different scene appeared – Mexican mesas (never been there), wipe, Manhattan (never been there either), wipe, caves in the Pyrenees (nope) plus other Google Earth sites I have never visited, but more and more often the M1 came through, wipe, near Watford, wipe, as though my car was a simulator rather than an actual XJ6, at which point the nightmare became all too fully 4 dimensional and I crashed into an oncoming panda bear the size of Westminster Bridge, Wipe-out and I woke up ..... at home, partly in my own bed. So after a nice cup of tea I pulled out my internet connection. FIT THE SECOND: Last month I briefly owned a DumbPhone. To be sure you could text, you could call, you could e-mail on the move, if you had that much to say, and you could doodle away on its apps. It played music very badly; it took inadequate pictures and through a tiny window I could reach a billion flatworld Internet sites, exposing myself to the unremitting blizzard of halfbaked information that forms the entire surface (and there is only surface in a 2 dimensional universe) of the flatscreen world. Which is when my hand-held spending device came into its own, inviting me to impulse buy all the other superficial tat I didnt need. The real seduction, the real secret of its marketability is not its valid uses in the physical world, which I don’t deny, but because it is a Tamagotchi phone, an electronic pet, a distraction device, a highly-evolved fiddle gadget with just enough real functions to justify the owner petting and stroking it all day for the timid little pleasures it provides. It replaces the shamed cigarette as a cool accessory. You’re never alone with an iPhone. Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, says: “Smartphones are emasculating”; another commentator says they are onanistic. Meanwhile your mechanical pet has an invisible umbilical siphon to psychobankers’ accounts domiciled on a fleet of asteroids beyond the Cloud in off-planet tax-worlds, with a navel /port so discrete that you hardly notice its effects until the monthly vertigo overtakes you when you are forced by cloven-hoofed bailiffs to look down into the pool of red hot debt that boils and spits and threatens to engulf you in the Etna – like financial abyss of your loans and mortgages.

6

FIT THE THIRD: Looking back through my life I have found it hard enough to concentrate, so I do not want to be seduced into a new addiction, a new distraction. I gave up smoking 20 years ago, I threw out the TV 25 years ago, and I’ve fought with alcohol for 50; now I am putting up the barricades a fourth time, to stop myself from being colonised yet again. I keep a nasty little netbook for my e-mail, and a mobile that cost £5 from Woollies’ way back in the 20th C., whose battery incidentally lasts weeks without recharging. I am retreating from the 21st C. - to the tune of Jerusalem: ♫ Bring me my horse, my horse a-and cart, bring me my errors of de-sire ♫ .... receding line by line into the sunset. I have been trying to understand the extraordinary thing that has happened over the last 20 years. A Pied Piper has led my children and then me into a digital labyrinth with signs and wonders, icons, sigils, key strokes, jingles and twitches of the mouse and then vanished, leaving no Ariadnian thread of escape. I’m marooned in a version of Portal 2 which has more dead-ends than the maze at Hampton Court. But you will never find the key to the Universe, the secret of eternal life, your raison d’etre, or the Holy Grail as you search the labyrinthine net, despite all the entries in Wikipedia, nor will you find a Minotaur to kill, squatting at its heart, guarding the Origin of the World, because he has already vanished from these shrunken dimensions with sackfuls of asteroidal loot to return to the good life back in the 10th C. BC, back when maidens were briefly maidens and a psychopath could enjoy himself naked and drunk, huntin’, shootin’, and rapin’ throughout the great Arcadian outdoors, in a midsummer dream, without all the moral deodorants and the inhibiting zootsuits that are required of 21st C. digital psychobankers. Coda: I have now recovered the 2 or 3 hours that the Internet stole from me each day. I have pulled out the plug. I have returned my DumbPhone with its ring of power to the Orange pit from whence it came. Thus I will save approx. 1,000 hours of waking consciousness p.a., which I can dedicate to keeping the holy water of my indignation permanently boiling, while watching the infinite variations of the River Teme as it flows past my house, all in that most challenging format 4 dimensions. As if to punish me for my low attitude to 2D virtuality and my out-of-date adherence to spatial intelligence, so much older than words, and the multidimensional riches not only of this world, but of the imagination too, the drains at my gaffe all broke down between the 2nd and 3rd paragraphs and I spent the next 12 hours up to my hocks in slurry, which is uniformly unpleasant in all dimensions, up, down, sideways and on-going. I now have a domestic hero gold star awarded by the wife, stuck like a postage stamp on the only 5 sq. cm. of me which is not clart, which just might make it all worthwhile. The question remains: Does your TV, smartphone, tablet or computer take more than it gives? Here endeth the lesson. Hugh Colvin (c) 2013

LETTERS Dear Pete I moved from Birmingham to beautiful Shropshire twelve years ago, which I guess makes me a man from off. Birmingham’s cultural scene was extensive, my entertainments calendar was crammed and friends despaired over the fact that I was moving to a cultural desert. Well: you know how short-sighted they were. There’s much to occupy me here as there ever was in the big city and Broad Sheep proved to be a better guide to the overall entertainment scene than anything I’d used before. Many thanks for an excellent publication. That’s the good news. Now read on... I realise that without you, there’s no Broad Sheep, and that you can do pretty well what you like with it, but you really ought to farm out your editorials to a disinterested critic before they go to print. To be brutal, they’re not funny, despite what your friends and family might think. April’s Peter and the Silver Train was embarrassing and likewise May’s Another Country, which had the added disadvantage of being loaded with left-wing misinformation about Margaret Thatcher. You’ll throw your hands up at this point and howl ‘Oh God, not another Disgusted of Shropshire’, because I’ll bet you’ve had quite a mailbag. Nevertheless, I want my turn, so here goes, with a few facts and observations...

• The Falklands have been in dispute for centuries and Argentina came fairly late to the table. Whatever, these days it’s just not done to sail mob-handed into sovereign Territory and say ‘It’s ours now’. Were we supposed to say ‘Okay, it’s only a bit of rock with a couple of thousand inhabitants loyal to GB: take it, it’s yours’. A dangerous precedent.

• You clearly don’t remember the miners’ strikes, the three-day week and the millions of lost working days occasioned by endless strikes in the sixties and seventies. When I lived in Birmingham it became a regular sight, driving down the dual carriageway of Bristol Road South, opposite The Austin (it was always The Austin, despite the various guises the factory took on) to see thousands of workers gathered on the central reservation, out again at the behest of Derek Robinson – Red Robbo – whose avowed intent, like that of Arthur Scargill, was to bring down the Thatcher government – or any government, for that matter. The demonstration of union muscle was all and that’s why Thatcher fought them. Too late, though, to repair the damage that union action had caused: who, do you imagine, would invest in an industry that couldn’t guarantee its workers to the production line? I lived a couple of miles from The Austin, and had friends who worked on that line who were unanimous in their view that union action, not Margaret Thatcher, had destroyed Longbridge. And incidentally, do you know that while the Thatcher government closed 160 pits, the Wilson government closed 290? • The £10 million Thatcher funeral cost was a kneejerk initial suggestion. Latest – rational – estimates hover around £3.5 million. That’s still a lot, I admit, but set against a prime minister who fought for and won an annual £3.5 billion rebate from the feckless EU, it’s a bargain. A bargain, too, to celebrate the last prime minister we will ever see who spoke her mind, stuck to her principles and never relied on focus groups or UKIP protest votes to tell her what to say to the electorate. There – that’s got that off my chest. A final point: if you really want to go political in your fine magazine, take a swipe at the cuts to arts funding promoted by successive governments. You, too, could be threatened... With best wishes John Eden

KING OF THE SESSION (Sung to the tune of ‘King of the Swingers’) I’m a bit of an anarchist and music’s in my blood I’d play reggae, Vivaldi and a tango if I could A bit of folk, a bit of blues, a bit of razzma tazz But I never seemed to master the art of playing jazz When I go to sessions it always surprises me If I meet someone who sings a song and then will disagree, If someone else sings out of turn or just not quite in key He’ll pull a face and then he’ll say he’s not as good as me Chorus u u u wanna be like you u u I wanna be a muso too I saw someone the other day that acted like the queen And wanted to place some order on a rather informal scene. We’re are all here to enjoy ourselves and not be downright mean and Must congratulate Will and Fay for the session in Presteigne Chorus Oh OH OH wanna be like you u u I wanna be a muso too

cinema LINCOLN Like the recent HYDE PARK ON THE HUDSON, Steven Spielberg’s laudable but thoroughly involving LINCOLN is less biopic and more political thriller as the soon-to-beassassinated American president struggles with his adversaries, and indeed his own conscience, to abolish slavery as the Civil War still rages. Daniel Day Lewis, well versed in portraying formidable American characters – think GANGS OF NEW YORK– rises magnificently to the occasion portraying LINCOLN as a cunning, intellectual man operating behind a folksy façade, with Sally Field as his nervously supportive wife and a phalanx of fine actors playing characters ranged both for and against him including Tommy Lee Jones, Hal Holbrook, and David Strathairn. Dramatically intense and period-perfect to behold, LINCOLN rates as one of Spielberg’s finest achievements.

IRON MAN 3 The third outing for Marvel Comic’s chameleon action hero finds sardonic billionaire inventor Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jnr.) undone by a mercilessly ingenious foe known only as The Mandarin (a marvellously sinister Ben Kingsley). Naturally, as his ironclad alter ego, Stark fights to put his world back together again and inflict maximum retribution. Now directed by LETHAL WEAPON veteran Shane Black, but with IRON MAN regulars Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) and Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) in tow and double Oscar-winning cinematographer John Toll (BRAVEHEART, CLOUD ATLAS) behind the lens, it’s an exhilarating, optically awesome ride. And in the process our hero finally manages to assuage his nagging doubt as to whether the man makes the suit, or the suit maketh the man?! 27 June ARGO (15) Goodrich VH 01600 890609 27 June SONG FOR MARION (PG) SpArC Theatre, Bishop’s Castle 01588 630321 28 June LES MISERABLES (2012) (12A) Market Theatre, Ledbury, 01531 633760 28 June LES MISERABLES (2012) The Red House, Albrighton 01902 373854 29 June GREAT EXPECTATIONS (2012) (12A) Clun Memorial Hall 01588 640254 29 June LIFE OF PI (PG) St Mary’s Church Hall, Ross-on-Wye 01989 720341 1 July QUARTET (12A) The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock 01952 728911 6 July SONG FOR MARION (PG) Playhouse Cinema, Community Centre, Leominster 01568 612583

IN THE HOUSE Melding the comedy of sexual manners that was his POTICHE and the emotional darkness of SWIMMING POOL, Francois Ozon delivers a wry thriller about a gifted student who beguiles his jaded Literature teacher with essays chronicling the bourgeois doings of a fellow student’s family … and whose mother he aims to seduce. Handsome newcomer Ernst Umhauer is the manipulative Claude, the ever-peevish Fabrice Luchini his teacher whose spikey, art gallerist wife is pitilessly realised by Kristin Scott Thomas, and the yummy mummy is played with flattered confusion by Emmanuelle Seigner. Whilst Claude’s motives may not be clear, the consequences and the insights into the lives of those he affects provide an edgy drama into which Ozon and his cast cleverly thread a hank of brittle social satire. End of the Line? T

HE story of the People’s Design Lab begins with a popular local recycling project called Zero Waste Presteigne & Norton. The project drew to a close this March with Powys CC taking on the recycling. But the story doesn’t quite end there.

54

It’s a waste The stuff that’s still at the bottom of the bin after people have recycled, re-used, repaired and composted is called residual waste. Typically, its a blend of cat food pouches, decorative things, broken gadgets and toys, polystyrene trays, plastic sleeves and little bits of foil stay fresh packaging. But behind waste are the designs. Designs with a brief that somehow became disconnected from the forest the paper came from, the effects of Day-Glo inks on recycled pulp, the fact that most fruits have skins of their own which are not plastic coated. People don’t like waste. The point is most people don’t like waste. They are more than willing to take part in local recycling if its friendly and simple and they can see the good in it. Landfill is just another dirty word. Like Poo. And Jimmy Saville. Anyway, for three years, Cwm Harry managed Zero Waste Presteigne and Norton and it was jolly good, but as recycling rates rose to a terrifically good 74%, local attention turned disapprovingly to the subject of residual waste. The trouble is, whole systems of production, packaging and distribution have evolved without proper consideration of what will happen at the end of the line. Then team zero waste discovered that in Italy some fellow recyclers were having a good idea called the Museum of Bad Design. This group had focused on Lavazza coffee capsules. They worked out that 12,000 tonnes of nonrecyclable Lavazza coffee capsules went to landfill each year and decided to take the issue back to the company. Ta da! Lavazza responded, inviting them to help design a solution and two years on, they are about to launch a pilot for the new design. Zero Waste Presteigne thought it was a great idea. Think circular The Ellen MacArthur Foundation has estimated that the EU could save at least £220bn a year if industries were to re-design products for resource recovery. But how do you start to address the complicated and systemic design issues such as distribution, shelf life, marketing and linear thinking that have led to residual waste? Companies like Lavazza and Orange Box may hold the key … Orange Box is a company specializing in office furniture and fittings. They have their own recycling centre, where they offer a take back service on all their products. These returns are either sent for re-use or disassembled for raw materials and so it makes sense to design for durability and ease of recycling from the outset. Katy Anderson at Cwm Harry has been busy with a new project that follows on from the project in Presteigne. They had started to talk about creating a feedback loop between what we consume, what we manufacture and what we throw away. It ties in nicely with the concept of a circular economy, and takes inspiration from Zero Waste

Presteigne, the Museum of Bad Design and some great ideas coming out of the U.S. In 2012 the freshly named People’s Design Lab won a place in the finals of Nesta’s Waste Reduction Challenge. Their website launched this April and people have begun to nominate and vote for products that need a re-design. A panel of waste experts, designers, consumer groups, university researchers and people from industry will help take the best ideas forward. Look, we’re doing our bit, what about you? What this is, is a chance for people who recycle carefully to talk to the industries who create ‘stuff’ in the first place and to say ‘look, we’re doing our bit, what about you?’ Katy and team are inviting designers and manufacturers to engage with it as well, so we, the recyclers can work with them, the manufacturers who make waste in the first place, to come up with better designs. So it’s not the end of the line. The People’s Design Laboratory, going national from Radnorshire, is online at http://www.thepeoplesdesignlab. org.uk Here you can nominate products that you can’t recycle, compost, re-use or repair for a redesign. And you can also nominate the best zero waste designs you know of, to contribute to the good design debate. Then, over the summer, you can join the team on-line and at workshops to work out how the top voted products could be redesigned. Rachel at www.sharpeningpencils.co.uk
