OH you lucky people, it’s competition Seth Lakeman time. It’s been ages since we had a good Broad Sheep competition and this one’s a corker. The prize is two tickets, worth £130 (children under 15 free and camping free) to the Bakewell Music Festival on the 10th-12th August. Line up includes Seth Lakeman and Gypsy Fire not to mention our old mates the Re-Entrants. All you need to do is write the first verse and chorus of a new song which includes the words “I lost my heart, to a Bakewell Tart”. The best entries will of course be printed in Broad Sheep but in addition the winning entry will be set to music and recorded by highly skilled Presteigne musicians and posted as a YouTube film on Broad Sheep T.V.com. Entries need to be sent to Broad Sheep’s address of info@broadsheep.com by the 1st July so you’d better get a move on. Everybody can enter, including Broad Sheep columnists, (yes, that means you Hugh). The other thing you’d better get a move on with is buying your Sheep Music tickets. As you’re probably aware, the old girl is back and if you look at her great website www.sheepmusicfestival.com you’ll see it has a typically interesting, varied and inspired line up of music including some killer acts that you’ve probably never seen before. It’s back on Wentes Meadow at the end of town and to answer your question, “Of course it’s not gonna rain!” We are also fast approaching Hay Festival time and as usual the festival is bringing out the Big Guns while How The Light Gets In Festival, down at the Globe is mounting highly effective guerrilla attacks from the surrounding hills. So the Festival (sponsored these days by The Telegraph) has Tim Minchin, Speech Debelle, Oi Va Voi, Billy Bragg, Sarah Jane Morris, Soweto Kinch, Cerys Matthews amongst a host of big names. I also notice from their programme that you can go to Hay Festival these days in Budapest, Beirut, Kerala, Patagonia, Segovia, Nairobi and believe it or not Merthyr Tydfil! Meanwhile down the road at the Globe, in between the Speech Debelle philosophy discussions, you can see Mano De Dios, the fantastic Camille O’Sullivan, Yes Sir Boss, The Zen Hussies, Anne Pigale and the rather talented King Charles. On the other hand if you’re a notorious cheapskate who just wants to sit around in the sun drinking coffee and listening to music for free you can catch the Fair on the Square in Hay 12-6pm on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th with Remi Harris, Whiskey River, Flatworld, Inspector Gadjo, Flok, Lori Campbell, Dirty Ray, Vera Van Heeringen and of course Little Rumba. See you there.

So I Said to the Queen... A

PUZZLE for you: a jar of pickled onions, Wagner’s Ring Cycle [which by the way is not a bike hire company, any more than Hertz Van Rental is a Dutch painter], strong coffee, anywhere south of Oxford - what do all these have in common? Yes, you’ve got it: they’re all fine, but only in very small doses - which brings me to today’s topic: The Imagination. Kept under control the imagination is what philosophers call A Jolly Good Thing. It has given us all manner of bounty: music, art, literature, scientific discoveries, and yes, pickled onions. But left to its own devices it might just take over and get you into all kinds of trouble. Many people are apt to use their imagination to exaggerate from time to time. Not you, obviously. Of course a vivid imagination can get you out of as well as into a real mess. It can also liven up your life and impress people. The biggest danger, though, is that what is imagined can slowly but surely turn into what is believed to be real. But as Lily Tomlin remarked, ‘What is reality, anyway? Just a collective hunch’. Enough of this! The last thing you want is for your philosopher-in-residence to get a bit…philosophical. So to lighten the load here’s another puzzle: you might like to consider which of the following is true. As philosophers you would first want to query the word ‘true’. But leaving that aside – something philosophers often do - let me assure you that one, and only one, of these incidents really did happen. But which one? And which others are the product of an over-worked imagination? 1. The Queen’s car happened to stop right in front of me. She got out and shook hands with one or two in the crowd, then noticed your philosopher-in-residence. She spoke to me. ‘Where have I seen you before?’ she asked. So I said to the Queen, ‘At the Palace, Mam. Your daughter was showing me round.’ 2. Bath Abbey many years ago. An orchestra was rehearsing. Glorious music. I stood and listened. A woman came and stood alongside me. ‘Nice tunes’, I said to her, nervously. ‘Very’, she replied, in a foreign accent, before being summoned to join the musicians to rehearse the vocal part in Mahler’s 4th. Without recognizing either the music or the singer I had just had the briefest of brief conversations with one of the greatest operatic sopranos the world has ever known: Victoria de los Ángeles. 3. It was a very tricky situation and he could see the woman’s hand slowly moving in the direction of the panic-button. Only a matter of time before armed police and dog-handlers would be surrounding the building and a megaphone telling him in no uncertain terms to come out with his hands up. The moral of this sad tale? - think twice before ever using a false name in a bank. Let me explain. My colleague Professor So-and-So was visiting all the banks in Shrewsbury to collect details about various

savings accounts - surely one of life’s most numbingly boring activities. After visiting five or six he decided to make the next visit a little more interesting. The lady in Customer Services [a contradiction if ever there was one] said he needed to speak to their financial advisor who would need to know his name? ‘Professor Conquest’ was the weird name that came to mind. After a long wait the advisor, who looked about 14, hove to and asked my colleague for his name. This was when his problems began. He had totally forgotten the invented name. He noticed that the Customer Services lady was unfortunately within earshot. She looked on suspiciously, wondering why this man seemed unable to supply his name to the advisor. But just in time, seconds before the panic-button was going to be pressed, years of practice as a philosopher - i.e. the art of avoiding questions to which one has no idea of the answer - came to his rescue. ‘Oh, just call me Norman’, he said. It was touch-andgo whether the woman would summon help to deal with a clearly dodgy man calling himself Norman Conquest. Fortunately she lost interest, presumably having come to the conclusion that Norman Conquest, although decidedly odd, was harmless and did not need to be placed in secure accommodation. 4. 1987 was a very good year: the year in which I became a millionaire. I asked a friend, who was a millionaire several times over, to write me a cheque for £1,000,000. He did. For five minutes I was rich beyond imagining. Pity he wanted the cheque returned. Back to your puzzle: can you imagine which one of these tales is true? Philosopher-in-Residence

cinema A BOUT PORTANT Although literally translated as ‘Point Blank’, writer/director Fred Caveyé’s second major film is not a re-make of John Boorman’s 1967 wronged-man masterpiece with Lee Marvin and Angie Dickinson. It is, however, just as violent and slightly-plotted, even more frantic and subtitled to boot, but as Film Soc. Corner is always anxious to affirm, those are no good reasons to avoid what is a highly entertaining French chase movie. Samuel, a male nurse, (Gilles Lelouche) finds his pregnant wife (Elena Anaya) is kidnapped by vicious gangsters in order to force him to spring their wounded boss (Roschdy Zem) from his hospital, and the ensuing mayhem in and under the Paris streets is, like Caveyé’s earlier crime thriller, Anything For Her, wonderfully choreographed and at times almost unbearably tense.

THE KID WITH A BIKE Directed and written by Belgian brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardennes, this is a far from sentimentalised tale of 11 year-old Cyril, abandoned by a selfish, single-parent father, and his obsessive search for his stolen bicycle. The metaphor of bicycle as lost family isn’t applied with a heavy hand, neither is Cyril’s reticence towards the town’s hairdresser who takes him in, the latter played with a sort of surprised avuncularity by Cecile de France. The consequent adventures, stresses and strains reach an inevitable emotional climax – albeit with an unexpected twist. Tomas Doret in the lead role gives a convincing and remarkably nuanced performance and the Dardennes’ latest excursion into their oeuvre of youth-based movies (The Son, Rosette) is arguably their most affecting. All reviews by Mark Williams

THE HUNGER GAMES Not entirely an original plot – Peter Watkins 1971 pseudo-documentary Punishment Park trod similar territory – The Hunger Games is a far flashier view of a dystopian future. In a believably fascistic version of America, in order to atone for the supposed political sins of past generations, a young male and female are forcibly chosen to represent each of twelve serfdoms in a fight to the death in a forest prison, the winner guaranteed both kudos and equality amongst the ruling elite. Played by largely unknown, often hammy actors, the kids battle it out under the auspices of a 24-hour televised game show hosted by a callous, smarmy and preposterously be-wigged Stanley Tucci, and the vengeful eye of president Donald Sutherland (sleepwalking towards his paycheque). Despite these obvious drawbacks, it’s an oddly compelling, morally redemptive and often hilarious film. 18 June WAR HORSE (12A) St Mary’s Church Hall, Ross-on-Wye 01989 720341 18 June CORIOLANUS (15) The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock 01952 728911 23 June THE WOMAN IN BLACK (12A) Playhouse Cinema, The Community Centre, Leominster 01568 612583 25 June THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO (18) The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock 01952 728911 26 June THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL (12) The Talbot Theatre, Whitchurch 01948 660660 28 June MY WEEK WITH MARILYN (15) Goodrich VH 01600 890609 30 June THE HELP (12A) St Mary’s Church Hall, Ross-on-Wye 01989 720341 30 June THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL (12) Cleobury Mortimer Parish Hall 01299 270830 30 June THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL (12) Dorstone VH 01981 550451 7 July THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL (12) Playhouse Cinema, The Community Centre, Leominster 01568 612583

The end to end breakfast

On our recent John O Groats to Lands End electric bike ride one of the things we intended to do was take pictures of all our breakfasts. After a week of Scottish B&Bs we kinda lost interest in the project but here is a quick sample of the best and worst.

The last breakfast before we left our cosy B&B for stormswept John O Groats. Notice the square plates and the green and yellow stuff on the left which I believe is called fruit.

Helmsdale , now that’s what I call a proper plateful. This B&B was run by a very clean ‘hoarder’, instead of the usual 2 towels provided we had a choice of 53.

The breakfast in Portmahomack is pretty normal but the Landlord was not. He spent all day sitting drunk by the front door telling the customers they were alll f**king c****

Some extremely welcome home cooking by Loch Ness. Proper eggs and bread, proper job.

In a cafe cum Post Office just before Glencoe. A delightfully ungourmet black pudding stack.

A possible contender - home cooked eggs Florentine at a friends house in Castle Douglas

A drunk Kendal poet told us ‘My last request would be fish and chips from FRY-DAYS’

Eggs Benedict at a pink cafe in Kendal. Apart from the overdone toast nearly faultless.

Possibly the worst of the trip. Microwaved rubbish and tea the colour of sump oil.

Inspired Cornish brunch, yes, its a smoked mackerel scotch egg!

24

Even more bizarre Cornish delicacies. Dates, Parma ham, goats cheese and fried bread.

And to finish some absolutely delicious crab sandwiches at a speciality tea shop on the quay at St Ives. I’ve already scoffed 2 of them.

Gorillas don’t eat chocolate W

HAT if … at the Olympics ... cameras panned right to Jessica Ennis, drinking organic apple juice? What if … at the finish line … the banners promoted Hill Cottage vegetables and a recipe for broad bean salad? What if … athletes really lived on Sausage and Egg Mc Muffins washed down with Coca Cola? These are the questions running round my head. I know, it’s all about sponsorship and marketing and, for the Olympic organisers, there is a certain “needs must” desperation about their list of sponsors. But what is the effect of junk food marketing and do we even realize that it’s having an effect as we struggle magnificently with the temptation to buy ... and therefore eat … three giant sugar topped muffins for the price of one? Politicians may be concerned about the “obesity epidemic” but elsewhere it’s business as usual, backed up by “strategic marketing” and “product placement.” And even sport, a healthy thing, has become somewhat associated with junk food. All of which leads me neatly and swiftly on to the subject of gorillas, chocolate and cars. Behind many corporate marketing strategies is a profit-led urge to create adverts that don’t look as if they are adverts. In 1995, Bond film Golden Eye became part of a marketing campaign to promote BMW’s new Z3 model. The strategy was so incredibly successful for BMW that the next Bond film, Tomorrow Never Dies, was tied into a 70 million pound promotional campaign for BMW, Visa, L’Oréal, Ericsson, Heineken, Avis, and Omega SA. Impressive. And that was just the start. In Eminem’s music video Love the Way You Lie last year, it was not by serendipitous chance that Stolichnaya vodka appeared in the storyline. The product placement begins with actor Dominic Monaghan shoplifting a bottle of the vodka, after which he and actress Megan Fox drink from it on the roof of the shop. And if Coca Cola cans are seen in Lady Gaga’s hair in the video “Telephone” then, Diet Coke or not, you can safely assume that someone paid for them to be there. Product placement is aimed at adults and at kids and it’s often so clever we may not even notice. But does it change the way we behave? And could obesity be an unfortunate side effect? Remember the advert for chocolate with a gorilla playing the drums? That was part of a multi million pound marketing campaign run by Starcom Mediavest. They planned a strategy to make Dairy Milk chocolate stand out from the crowd by associating it with really cool things like gorillas, rock stars and a glass-halffull approach to life. Then they paid for the video to be shown at moments of heightened interest and anticipation such as the rugby world cup, rock concerts, and the Big Brother finals. Success! Sales across the country went up by a significant 9%. Disaster. Across the country, diets failed. This is serious stuff. 31% Of UK children are now classified as overweight, 10% of four- and five-year-olds

classified as obese, UK household purchases of fresh fruit and veg and organic produce are falling and projected forecasts showing that by 2050, 60% of men and 50% of women will be clinically obese if these “trends” continue. “It doesn’t have to be like this,” says Graham at Myriad Organics. So here we are, top foody tips for healthier loveliness in the Marches: Discover the truth about good food, local food, affordable food and healthy food at the Presteigne Food Trail this June. Get healthy and buck the trend. Some adverts may well be more entertaining than TV reality shows but you don’t have to be controlled by them, especially not if you can get better food and affordable too from local farmers, producers, delis and markets. Don’t be duped. Most of the athletes and cyclists I know wouldn’t drink coca cola unless someone paid them, others wouldn’t drink it even if someone paid them.
