Ivey Business School Case Competition
Congratulations to Evan Biberdorf, Rhys Johnson, Tyler Bugeaud and Jaclyn Hiebert who represented Rundle at the Ivey Business School Case Competition on February 26. Jaclyn was on the winning team and Rhys was on the second place team. In this competition, Grade 11 students from high schools across the city were put on teams that were lead by Ivey alumni. The students were presented with a business problem and were required to create a presentation that argued for how they would approach that problem. The presentations were judged by business leaders from around Calgary to determine the winners. It was clearly a unique and valuable experience for all of the students.

Grade 7 Boys Basketball The grade 7 boys have had a great season so far and they have improved greatly since December. Some highlights include a 27 to 16 victory against West Island College and a nail biting 22 to 20 win against Tanbridge Academy. Good luck to the boys in their year end tournament March 5 th to 7th at Glenmore Christian Academy!
Senior Boys Basketball The senior boys basketball team had a very busy month in February. We started off in the Bowness tournament facing a very tough Catholic Central team. We played good basketball against strong 4A teams all weekend. In our own Cobra Cup we beat Red Water and Disbury convincingly to make it to the final against a very talented St. James Collegiate team from Winnipeg. Congratulations to the boys on a well earned silver medal in the Cobra Cup. League play continued as we fought for the final playoff spot in the CISAA. We fell one game short of the playoffs but challenged every team we played, including a very close game against 2nd place Webber. Congratulations to our graduating seniors, Jake McKenna, Brandon Giacchetta, Sam Sawchuk and Brendan Stewart. The future is bright with a solid core of grade 10’s and 11’s coming back next year.
Wrestling On February 3 and 4, our high school wrestlers competed at the Forest Lawn High School Clash of the Titans, where all our wrestlers placed in the top 6 positions. Gold medalists were Patrick Tapuska and Duncan Allison, and Bronze medalist Justin So. Patrick Tapuska received an additional honor; he was voted by the coaches of the tournament as the Male Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. Next up was the Alberta Winter Games, where Daniel Krayzel, Meghan Lim and Jolene Wong represented Team Calgary and helped their team to the Team Gold Medal. In the individual competition Daniel was 6th, while Jolene and Meghan each took the silver medal. All three represented Calgary and Rundle College extremely well. This same weekend Justin So took home the silver medal at the Sir Winston Churchill Classic. The following weekend was the Junior High Provincial Championships at Centennial High School. At this tournament we had Meghan Lim and Leigh Hauck claim Rundle’s latest provincial champion titles, each taking home the Gold medal and title of Provincial Champion. Silver medal performances by Jolene Wong, Jordan Wong and Ellis Johnson added to the impressive weekend of wrestlers by our Jr. High Team. Lastly, our high school wrestlers attended the Calgary High School City/Zone Championships at Forest Lawn High School. On March 1 and 2 we had six Rundle wrestlers attend the Calgary High School City/Zone Championships. Everyone stepped up to the plate competing and representing Rundle College extremely well. We had 4 wrestlers place in the top 5 positions. Patrick Tapuska was a gold medalist, Justin So and Duncan Allison were silver medalists and Brittney Giacchetta was fifth. All these wrestlers now qualify and advance to the ASAA High School Provincial Championships on March 9 and 10 at Foothills Composite High School in Okotoks. On March 2 we had Gr. 7-10 wrestlers attend an open age category tournament in Cochrane, against club teams from around the province. Gold medalists were Owen Vouri, Jolene Wong and Tara Osler. Silver medalists were Ellis Johnson and Daniel Krayzel. And taking home the bronze medal was Jordan Wong. Best wishes to the high school wrestlers attending provincials and to wrestlers attending our last tournament of the season, the Alberta Open age category provincial championships in Ponoka.
Grade 9 Girls Basketball The grade 9 girls basketball team had a very successful end to their season with tournaments at both Mid-Sun and Clarence Sansom in February and the Alberta South Central Zone Championships in March. The girls had an outstanding showing at the Clarence Sansom tournament as they won the tournament, beating Sir John A. MacDonald in the final game by twenty points. The team also had a good showing at MidSun as they lost a close game in the semi-final to the home team to place third in the tournament. In the final tournament of our season, the girls competed in the Alberta South Central Zone championship in which they placed 2nd losing a very close game in the final by one point to Trinity Christian. I was very proud of the way the girls played in their final game and the class they showed after a hard loss. I was very lucky to have the opportunity to work with such an amazing group of athletes who always displayed a great work ethic and willingness to get better at every practice and game. I was also very fortunate to have such an excellent group of parents who commited their supports to the team; this was very much appreciated. Congratulations girls, on an outstanding season! Mr. Gibson

Senior High Citizens of the Month Ana Arsenych De Castro is a mature, extremely positive force in the classroom who brings joy and enthusiasm to any task presented to her. She is engaging in class and always has a ready laugh and sees the humor in any situation. An avid artist, Ana has been commissioned to draw for both faculty and peers and is working on her bilingualism (she speaks Spanish with the most beautiful accent!). Ana is respected by her teachers for her unique personality and willingness to try anything with a smile on her face. Congratulations to a very deserving Citizen of the Month! Jack Evans is a respectful, mature and focused grade 10 student. He is a member of the golf team, volleyball and basketball teams and senior band. Just like the character of “J.J Singleton” that he portrays in the spring production of The Sting, Jack is a real gentleman. Along with his wit and sincerity, Jack’s genuine concern for his peers makes him an excellent choice as Citizen of the Month.
Speech On
February
10th,
the
junior
and senior high Regional Speech Tournament was held at Western Canada High School. Maya Chambers, Erica Kemp, Erin Anderson, Elizabeth Church, Jaclyn Hiebert, and Cayley Wreggitt represented Rundle with great poise and skill against a huge field of the city’s best speakers. Elizabeth Church is a young woman who displays citizenship in a number of ways. As a leader in Peer Support, she leads with grace and humility. Recently, Elizabeth initiated a fundraiser supporting Earth Day. In the role, she has demonstrated qualities of maturity, responsibility and effective communication. On a recent band trip to New Orleans, she was described as a “model student,” in that she anticipated others’ needs, offered help and always had good things to say about others. Evan Biberdorf achieves a high standard of excellence in his subjects with a humble demeanor and a mature drive for success. These qualities, in addition to his academic aptitude, robust work ethic and friendly character are integral to his success this semester. Evan is an outstanding speaker and thinker; he participated in debate club earlier this year and recently competed at the Richard Ivey School of Business competition held at WIC. He was one of four students selected to represent Rundle and was a standout amongst the competitors. Also, he has been an extremely reliable participant in all of the preparations for the Grade 11 trip to Peru.
Amara Kraft is a very deserving recipient of Citizen of the Month. Since the beginning of the school year, she has displayed her commitment to Rundle College Athletics while maintaining high academic marks as well as maintaining her schedule as an elite Soccer Player. Grade 7 student Rohan Kumar represented Rundle College in the 2012 Canspell Regional Spelling competition on March 3. To qualify, he was the top speller amongst all grade sevens in our school, then he was chosen as one of 54 competitors across Calgary based on a written spelling test. Hosted by CBC news anchor, Nirmala Naidoo, and sponsored by CBC, the Calgary Herald. Competitors ranging from grade 4 to 8 showed tremendous poise under the bright lights as they spelled a wide range of difficult words. Congratulations to Rohan for being an excellent representative of our school.
Duncan Allison is a likeable, strong student leader who is very well respected by staff and students for the endless efforts and contributions he makes to Rundle. Whether in class, as a member of prefects, as the main MC for Christmas Gala, on the wrestling mat, the Rugby pitch or supporting all aspects of Rundle life, he is one who can be counted on to follow through. He is a very well balanced, motivated, hard-worker, who is kind, witty and has strength of character and integrity. Lastly, he has to be commended for his love and commitment to preserving wildlife such as the miniature giraffe.

In the intramural badminton championship game Mr. Domstad and Mr. Leong were no match for Andrew Miles and Will Carter who were at the top or their game and took the championship in straight sets. Congratulations, Will and Andrew. Next intramural activity is Team Handball.
Track and Field We are looking forward to another strong Track and Field season. Senior High Track and Field practices will begin Monday, April 9. The practice schedule will be posted in both gyms. To qualify for the track and field team athletes must contact the proper event coach to try out for events, and attend practices as attendance will be taken. If you are unable to attend practices due to other team commitments, but would still like to compete with the team, talk to your event coach. This year we are asking that all students interested in competing for the team, who are involved in another sport during the season, to take part in at least one practice a week. Coaches: Spring/Hurdles/Distance: Mrs. McClements Throwing: Mr. Domstad Jumping: Ms. Adolphe Practice Schedule: Please note that practice times may be changed due to weather. Maya Chambers is friendly, positive, and a helpful addition in any classroom. She is incredibly creative and artistic and was an extremely realistic living doll in her performance in Babes in Toyland. In cross country, she showed perseverance and a competitive spirit. She has a quiet confidence coupled with a witty sense of humour. Congrats, Maya!
Hayden Munn is a super student who works very hard and takes pride in his work. No matter what kind of environment he is in, he is very aware of others and is very considerate of his peers and teachers. His enthusiasm for all aspects of school is evident as he excels in academics, the arts and athletics.
Veronica Bodell is the type of person who will go out of her way to assist others. She possesses a kind and gentle spirit, yet she is very competitive when it comes to the world of sports. While others cringe and cower at the dreaded BEEP test, Veronica completed this task with stitches in her abdomen. It truly was a gutsy and inspiring effort from a young lady who carries herself with dignity and grace.
Marie Bouchard has been a dedicated Cobra Athlete this year. Her hard work, team spirit and leadership abilities have been appreciated by all of her coaches. Beyond her school sports, Marie also plays ringette. Marie manages to balance each of these activities and her school work with ease. Marie is well respected by her peers, and a pleasure to be around. She is a positive role model and an excellent representative of Rundle College.
Danika Lipman is a conscientious and diligent worker who is always kind to her classmates. She has a friendly and positive nature and is extremely hard working in her studies. She gave a great performance in the Rundle junior high production of Babes in Toyland, showing that she shines both in the classroom and on stage. Keep up the great work, Danika!

Grade 10 Social Studies
Dare to Care: A Student Perspective
On Thursday, February 23, Grade 10 Social Studies students attended a presentation by residential school survivor, Kris McNab. He shared with students his own experiences and the experiences of his family in residential schools. Students heard about the neglect, abuse and loss of identity that Mr. McNab faced during his elementary years and the repercussions that this experience has on his life today. Many students were very moved by his presentation as it allowed them to explore the effects of residential schools in a more personal way. “During the presentation by Kris McNab, I was shocked to find out the truth about residential schools. From what I had previously learned, I thought that they were simply normal schools that were used to change the culture of aboriginals. I didn’t realize that there was so much abuse and how cruel they were to the aboriginals.” Megan Zmetana “In my opinion, I think it’s kind of sad that because of the residential schools Kris feels like he doesn’t need his family and can live without them. To me that means residential schools were partially successful in breaking the family bond and wanting to take “the Indian” out of him. Now I feel like people shouldn’t just tell the First Nations to ‘move on’ and ‘get over it.’” Arisha Shory “Kris McNab’s story was extremely moving and deep. It effectively and efficiently described the true pain experienced by the survivors of the residential schools. On reflection, it is deeply saddening that this chapter occurred in Canadian history; however, it happened and I appreciate how strong Kris McNab is for surviving. Though it is not often talked about and is certainly not a welcome topic to discuss, residential schools are something that I feel should be more widely acknowledged.” Calder Kitagawa
On February 8th, Constable Dwayne Peace visited Rundle College Senior High to speak to the grade ten and eleven students about bullying prevention as part of the Dare to Care program. While his presentation was focused on the negative effects of physical and emotional bullying in schools, he also talked about responsible social networking, eating disorders, the dangers of drugs and alcohol, teen depression and suicide. Students were educated about the power of words and the way that their decisions affect their lives and their relationships with friends and family. Constable Peace had a powerful way of presenting such serious information and left a positive impact on the student body. After the assembly, the grade eleven students took part in small group sessions with Constable Peace. During the sessions, students learned the value of listening and showing understanding and acceptance to their fellow classmates. The sessions were focused on creating strong relationships and support among the grade eleven students in preparation for their senior year at Rundle. The Dare to Care program was a valuable and inspirational experience for all involved and received a very positive response from the student body. Erin Anderson
