Edgewater On April 19th -24th, 38 grade 8 students embarked on their Edgewater trip to the West Coast. Mr. Ben Gibson, Mrs. Charity Helman, Mrs. Taryn Cossar and Mrs. Marlo Sullivan accompanied these students on what becomes a “trip of a lifetime” for these students. As part of the crew of the Edgewater Fortune, a former navy ship, we worked in the galley, on the bridge, in the engine room and cleaned as part of the deck crew. Shore excursions were spent exploring the marine life and learning about the science of it all. We spent our 5 days also touring the Gulf Islands, we visited Ganges on Saltspring Island, kayaked around Saturna Island, and hiked Mt. Norman on Pender Island - just to name a few. Students came back sun-kissed and exhausted, as we had great weather, but the busy pace of the trip was tough. Brandon Centini was chosen by teachers to wear the survival suit for the safety demonstration at the end of the week - congratulations to him. Congratulations to all who were recognized for crew people of the day, but special congratulations go to Robby Graham and Rebecca Argenal who were our Crew People of the Week.

Change for Change Rundle College Jr/Sr High participated in the Free the Children’s WE CREATE CHANGE campaign, Canada’s largest penny drive. Between March 6-20, students brought pennies into their homeroom and TA classes to contribute to the Free the Children’s year long “Water Initiative”. Each RBC bag($25.00) that was filled with pennies provided clean water for life for 1 individual. We collected $1500.00! This means we will provide 60 individuals with clean water for life. Special recognition goes out to Ms Cossar’s homeroom and the 2 high school calculus classes for being the top contributors in each division. Well done, students!!

Rundle Hosts Japanese Rugby Game

May ~ 2013

On Monday, April 22, Rundle College had the rare opportunity to host a touring U18 sevens rugby team from Hokkaido, Japan. The event kicked off with an opening ceremony in the aux gym with welcoming speeches from Rundle College, Alberta government and Rugby Alberta representatives, as well as team introductions and a gift exchange between the Rundle and Hokkaido teams. The ceremony was followed by a friendly sevens tournament on the Rundle field. Participating teams included the team from Hokkaido, Rundle, Henry Wisewood and the Southern Alberta Rugby Academy. With the stands nearly full on a beautiful sunny afternoon, the tournament opened with Rundle versus Hokkaido. The Rundle boys got a lesson on how sevens is supposed to be played, from the very strong and talented team from Japan. As it turns out, Rundle would score the only try that the Hokkaido team would surrender on the day. Rundle also went on to defeat Henry Wisewood in their second game. The tournament wrapped up with a game between the Hokkaido team and Southern Alberta Rugby Academy, followed up by a group picture with all of the players and officials. The rugby portion of the day was followed up with a BBQ put on by Spolombos during which the boys, despite wide language barriers, mingled and enjoyed each other’s company. After a great afternoon of rugby and socializing, the boys from Hokkaido boarded their bus and departed. Rundle has already been invited for a return tour to Hokkaido.

More Rugby News The boy's rugby team has had a very busy start to their season. Within the course of six days, the team participated in the Kamloops Rugbyfest on April 19 and 20, returned home to host the team from Hokkaido on Monday, April 22, then wrapped up an incredibly busy week with a game against WIC on Wednesday, April 24. The team won two games and tied one in Kamloops, lost soundly to the team from Hokkaido, but bounced back to beat Henry Wisewood in the sevens tournament, then defeated WIC 33 - 10 in a battle of league rivals. Since then, the boys defeated Webber 76 - 12 on Thursday, May 2, setting a record for most points scored in a game. Next up is a series of sevens games against Westmount Mount Charter on Thursday, May 9 at 4:30 at the CRU.

Student Meets Music Producer

May ~ 2013

On Friday, April 12th, I (Mckenna White) had the honor of meeting Walter Afanasieff, who is a world famous producer and songwriter. Walter works with many astounding people such as Mariah Carey, Josh Groban and Barbra Streisand. Walter is an amazing and humble man. Leading up to meeting him, I was quite nervous. I brought all of my music with me just in case he would want me to play for him. About an hour into the evening, I played one cover song at his request, “Love The Way You Lie” and then two original songs, “Come Around” and “Raindrops”. Walter was very impressed by the lyrics in my songs as well as my voice. He could tell that I have had lots of training through both the choir and from piano lessons. That comment alone left me breathless, and as I continued to talk to him about the music industry, I surprisingly learned that we have a lot of things in common. Later that evening, he asked me to play and sing another song. Before I knew it, I had almost played my entire repertoire and even a duet with him. His favorite original song of mine was “Remember The Night You Forgot”, which I wrote for Remembrance Day. While singing this song, he actually began to sing along to it. It was absolutely a once in a lifetime experience. I am so glad to have met him and hopefully I will be able to work with him professionally one day.

Rundle College Feed The Hungry Once again, Rundle College has sponsored a Feed the Hungry dinner for our city’s less fortunate residents. On April 28th, our families worked from 9:30 am until 5:30 pm to chop, mix, cook, set, dish, serve and clean up so that 700 people could enjoy a wonderful Sunday dinner. It was hard work and every single individual did a tremendous job. It is always so nice to see parents and children volunteering together in this venue. Thank you to all families who donated to this important event. We were once again able to cover our full pledge of $4500. Special thanks to the following families for donations of $100.00 or more: Rooneys, Seavers, Greenslades, Borys’, Kitagawas, Stewarts, Thorntons, Burgess’, B. Evans, Gohills, Bashnicks, Killackeys, Okamuras, Thorburns, Orrs, Sheas, Dundas’, Grahams and Wilfurs. The following families and staff volunteered together on April 28th: Allens, Bakers, Beitels, Bessels, Boehms, Bogzarans, Braakmans, Bucks, Bulls, Caldwells, Chumiks, Caputos, Cardenas’, Erwins, Gilmans, Grants, Greggs, Gruendings, Hughes’, Koontjes, Kraus’, Krugs, Littons, Lodhas, Loves, Mas, McMahons, Moults, Munroes, Panacciones, Peacocks, Roths, Sheas, St. Louis’, Thorburns, Wongs, Mr. Hauk, Mrs. Baird, Mrs. Golebiowski, Ms. FitzGibbon, Ms. Pidkowa and Ms. Ross. Thank you to all of our incredibly generous families in Rundle College. What a difference a dinner can make!

SOS

Don’t wait until the week before exams to begin your study plan! Ms. Woods offers “SOS” (Skills of Survival) sessions every Wednesday at lunch in the library. This is an opportune time for students to improve their organization, time management, study and test taking skills. A focus theme is presented each week and these ‘drop in’ sessions are open to all junior high students.

Public Speaking

Senior High Citizens of the Month Carina Lai is a fantastic representation of a well rounded person. From her recent adventures in Europe on the Grade 10 Languages Trip, where she demonstrated an incredible sense of leadership and responsibility, to the classroom and school community, this reliable, responsible student proves she truly cares about others. Carina is a member of Peer Support, where she has been active in creating videos and helping with initiatives in the Junior High. Congratulations, Carina! Self motivation, a positive attitude and quiet confidence are what make Emily Allen a Rundle College Citizen. Striving for success, she is always working to improve, taking steps to grow academically. This growth extends into athletics where she was very involved on the basketball team, continually putting forth her best effort, while maintaining a respectful attitude toward both her opponents and her teammates. Emily was also a true ambassador on the Europe Trip. Despite the diversity of her fellow travellers, she was always accepting of others. She participated wholeheartedly, engaged in learning about the culture and made keen observations. Congratulations, Emily! Congratulations this month to an extremely busy person, Ana Arsenych De Castro! From her energetic involvement in girls’ Rugby where she consistently demonstrates a positive attitude and motivates her fellow teammates, to her enthusiastic involvement in both the CAUSE club and Art Club, where she is always willing to take on any task, large or small, Ana represents a truly all-around citizen. This calm and collected student is also talented in technical theatre and design and was the Head of Props for this year’s production, The Three Musketeers. Ana is a genuine person with an incredible work ethic, respect, and responsibility who is kind and considerate to all. There is something to be said for someone who can successfully balance his schoolwork and extracurricular activities. It takes a lot of hard work and determination to do this with one sport, and Sam Stewart does it with three. As a member of our Basketball, Football and Rugby teams, Sam has kept himself busy this year while working equally as hard in class and at home to ensure success in the classroom, as well . Sam understands he is the architect of his own fortune and uses this as inspiration to be a leader in all he does. In a recent trip with the Rugby squad to Kamloops, he showed exactly how he has grown in stature with an impressive display of skill and sportsmanship. He has a great sense of humour, friendly disposition and is well liked by both peers and team mates. It’s Sam’s hard work, determination and attitude in both sport and education that make him a deserving citizen of the month. Ben Guinan has a sometimes subtle and other times not so subtle sense of humor that keeps those whom he interacts with in good spirits. Whether practicing his French accent, making an impact on the rugby pitch or creating memorable moments on stage, Ben is a very humble, well liked and respected individual in large part because he treats others with kindness and respect. He takes direction well, is very coachable and polite in his interactions with everyone and is a most deserving citizen of the month. Congratulations, Ben! It is truly a pleasure to recognize and honour Anna Ryan as citizen of the month. She is a young lady who has flown under the radar this year; yet she has really challenged herself,in this her final year of high school. Anna has been responsible for our monthly school newsletter in the 2nd semester; dedicating herself to learning the program and producing a publication she takes pride in. Anna also participated in the humanitarian trip to Guatemala and was recognized for the positive relationships she developed with fellow travelers and the maturity with which she conducted herself. She also established and maintained the trip blog for the group. She has also impressed staff with her desire to do her best in class and improve her results. Anna has had to step out of her comfort zone this year, and ,as a result ,there has been significant growth in her skill set.

On April 13th, five of our junior and senior high students competed in Law Day at the Calgary Courts Centre. Students had the opportunity to practice their presentations skills in front of lawyers who served as judges and provided feedback to the speakers. It was a valuable experience for all. Kudos to Erin Anderson, Melissa Guenette, Jaclyn Hiebert, Leonardo Arreaza, and Tara Osler for their courageous efforts that day!

Grade 12 Grad Plans continue to be made for the 2013 Graduation Ceremonies and already the admin team has met with the grads. The afternoon ceremonies at the Jubilee Auditorium will be on June 4, commencing at 1:00 pm. All parents, friends, and students are welcome to attend the ceremony and will have designated seating. We hope that you can all come and support this year’s graduating class! The evening program, including the dinner and dance, will be held on June 7 at the Red and White Club. Questions regarding these events should be directed to Ms. Baird. Letters containing the details about the graduation ceremonies were mailed to parents April 15, and we hope that requests for additional guests are submitted as soon as possible so that we can do our best to accommodate your needs. We look forward to congratulating the Graduating Class of 2013.

Grade 9 Grad All grade 9 students should mark June 10 on their calendars as this is the date for the grade 9 graduation. It will be held at Stage West and will include a dinner and formal program. Ms. Baird met with the students on April 23/24 to discuss the graduation, and families should have already received letters home detailing the event. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Ms. Baird.

Grade 10 Languages Trip

May ~ 2013

We are back from our very successful trip to Spain and France that saw 45 students do a whirlwind trip of many sights, sounds, and tastes from the two countries. Reporting in on the highlights of the trip is French student Chelsea Hamming: Our trip to Spain and France truly began as we arrived on a sunny day in beautiful Barcelona after a couple stops in Ontario and Germany! In the four days we spent touring the city and surrounding countryside, our group was able to see many colourful and exotic sights such as the famed mosaic bench in Guell Park. We had a lovely day shopping in the sunshine and eating at a delicious open air market full of fresh fruit and Spanish pastries. To top it all off, we spent a night learning to flamenco dance and later sat back with a Fanta to watch professionals show off their impressive footwork. All in all, our time in Barcelona was full of laughter and culture as we made our way to Provence. We spent two days in the southern region of France before travelling on the bullet train to Paris. In those few days, we enjoyed a tour of the medieval fortress Carcassonne and enjoyed crepes in Arles. We visited an olive oil museum where the group learned about how olive oil was made and its importance to global culture and the economy. Our last few days in Paris provided an excellent opportunity to practice the language we have spent years studying. In our first couple days we visited several charming boutiques and the impressive Notre Dame cathedral. Next we had a delicious dinner at the famous Eiffel Tower on the banks of the Seine following a visit to the Palace of Versailles and a peaceful river cruise. The bright morning brought an exciting, busy day at Disneyland Paris and visiting the Louvre to see the Mona Lisa. After several pictures with these works of art, we went back to our quaint hotel before departing the next morning. After a full day of travelling, we arrived home full of exciting stories to share. And from Spanish student, Bobbi Shewchuk, another perspective from our adventure abroad: This year I was given the opportunity to go on the trip of a lifetime, the grade 10 languages trip. My classmates and I headed off to Europe a few days before spring break. We traveled from Calgary to Toronto, Toronto to Munich, and Munich to Barcelona. When we finally arrived in Barcelona we were all so excited to see what Barcelona had in store for us. We had the chance to go sightseeing, try cultural foods, and get to know our classmates and teachers a lot better. The amazing sights we experienced in Barcelona included the chocolate factory, where we learned how chocolate is made and got to see sculptures made entirely from chocolate. The same day, we also got to see the outstanding La Sagrada Familia church, which is still under construction. After our three-night stay in Barcelona, we then headed off on a bus to Nimes but stopped in Carcassonne, a small town that was very much like a medieval town back in the day. It had a castle in the middle of it and we got a chance to tour it and spend a few hours checking out the local shops and restaurants. We then headed to our rustic hotel in Nimes. The next day we went to Arles and Avignon. There we got to visit the ancient Amphitheatre in Arles, France. We also got to visit an olive oil mill where we were shown how olive oil was traditionally made and the different things it can be used for. The next day we took the TGV from Avignon to Paris. The first night we got there we got to do a bit of sightseeing and shopping. In Paris we got to do so many amazing things like visit the Arc De Triumphe, Versailles, and have an incredible dinner on the Eiffel Tower. On the last day of our trip we went to Euro Disney! We also visited the Musee du Louvre. We finished off the Europe trip of 2013 with a delicious three-course crepe dinner. The grade 10 Europe trip was something I will always treasure, and the experiences I got to share with my peers truly are unforgettable and will be cherished by my classmates and I for the rest of our lives.

Explore IT

On Wednesday, May 8th, six grade 9 girls attended the Explore IT Conference at SAIT. Elise Buck, Emily Bodell, Amy Fahlman, Idaresit Thompson, Talia Kruger and Katherine Holoryd-Leduc were able to gain first-hand experience through IT related activities, such as soldering circuit boards, producing a TV news broadcast, and working with the Adobe Creative Suite software. They also received some motivational advice from Nicole Gerald, a Systems Engineer at Cisco Canada. Overall it was a great day and the girls learned a lot about science and technology related careers.

Grade 10 & 11’s Volunteers

May ~ 2013

Again this year, our high school students had an opportunity to volunteer at a variety of community organizations on the afternoon of April 11(grade 11) and April 25(grade 10). Students and staff worked at the Food Bank, Drop In Centre Warehouse, Mustard Seed Warehouse, and Neighbourhhod Link. Many hands meant these organizations were able to sort through a great many donations, and the Food Bank workers processed several tons of food. Our grade 11 band students went to the Kerby Centre to play for the seniors and then spent time visiting. Some of our grade 10’s had the opportunity to spend the day at Camp Kindle helping to get the camp ready for the upcoming summer season. Once again our students made very positive impressions on the organizations we worked with, and we have received many thanks and invitations to return.

Australian Exchange 2013 On March 1st ,2013, three Canadian exchange students arrived in Caloundra, Australia; Megan Mackie, Liz Miles, and TJ Buckley. Emily Rava billeted Megan Mackie, Liz Miles was billeted by Justin Faa and TJ Buckley was billeted by TJ Bindon. These three students stayed for a total of six weeks and embraced the exotic Australian culture. In the short weeks that they were there, they managed to accomplish a lot. The two girls went to Emu Gully for a three day camp with the grade 10 and 11 students. They had a blast in the Australian outback and really got a chance to bond with the other students. Also, the three students were involved in the activities day at the end of term one. During the break, Megan and Emily went to Coffs Harbor and TJ, TJ, Justin and Liz flew to the beautiful and famous Sydney. The teens managed to make day trips to Noosa, Maloolaba, Eumundi, Mount Coolum, Bli Bli, and Brisbane. The studenst noticed many differences between Canada and Australia, the weather and the climate being the most significant. Coming from -30 winters at home to 30 degree weather on the Sunshine Coast was an extreme shift, but the three students embraced the heat. Living by the ocean for six weeks was quite amazing for them. Each had a favorite part of the exchange experience. Megan and Liz’s favorite part was the Emu Gully camp and just relaxing at the beach. TJ enjoyed the Brisbane Roar soccer games and climbing the Sydney Harbor Bridge. All in all, the three students were honored to be welcomed so warmly by Caloundra City Private School. They came home with memories of six weeks they’ll never forget!

Junior High Citizens of the Month

May ~ 2013

Giulia Romano truly exemplifies Rundle College spirit. Her vivacious personality combined with her dynamic leadership skills have positively influenced both students and teachers. Giulia is new to Rundle this year and has embraced every opportunity made available to her. A typical day in the life of Giulia involves anything from shooting hoops, smashing birdies, snapping photos, saying a kind word to a friend in need, or cracking a joke to lighten a sombre mood. Going out of her way to make sure everyone is included and feels part of ‘the team’ is one of Giulia’s many leadership gifts. Congratulations, Giulia! We look forward to witnessing your continued growth and circle of influence at Rundle College. Lexi Hill is a hard-working, organized and diligent student. Whatever she does, she does it to the best of her ability. She is a selfmotivated learner that excels in all aspects of the curriculum. Lexi is a positive leader in her classes and a considerate Rundle citizen. She is a mature young lady with an excellent sense of humour. Lexi’s kind and sincere manner has earned her the respect of her peers and teachers. Congratulations to Lexi on this well deserved acknowledgement of her qualities as a true Rundle College citizen. Robby Graham has been an outstanding citizen in many different areas of the school over the course of the year, including both extracurricular and academic aspects of school life. Robby has been involved in a variety of extracurricular opportunities in which he has contributed greatly. He was a vital member of the grade 8 boys volleyball team as a talented setter and natural leader. Robby was also a standout on the grade 8 Edgewater trip as our crew person of the week. On the trip, he displayed outstanding leadership qualities and set an amazing example for the other students on the trip. Robby is also a very hard working student therefore he has achieved a lot of success academically. Congratulations to Robby on this very deserving award, as he is such a talented, good-natured young man and a valuable member of our junior high school. “>>>>>>>>> deserves a piece of licorice because she paddles faster than Mr. Eremko’s sarcasm” - quote from Matthew aboard the Edgewater Fortune. Matthew Yeung was inspiring on this trip. He tried everything that there was to do and then volunteered to do so many more activities. His outstanding willingness to do everything was appreciated by the Edgewater Fortune crew. His outstanding personality was an inspiration for his fellow crew members. Within Rundle College, he is also a member of the Senior Band- an amazing feat for a grade eight student. When you think of a good citizen, qualities such as respect for others, kindness, and strength of character come to mind. Add in a delightful sense of humour, and you have described Nick Welch, this month’s grade 9 citizen. Nick works well with virtually everyone in the school and is known for his unique point of view on a variety of subjects. He takes advantage of any opportunity to help out or to just be a good listener. His easy-going style is completely genuine and we all appreciate his ability to make everyone feel comfortable and valued. Nick is on Leader’s Council and is always enthusiastically involved in their initiatives and school spirit activities. Nick is just an all-around “good guy”! Emily Graham is an excellent example of a Rundle citizen. She is respectful of others, involved in all aspects of school life and is someone who steps outside of her comfort zone and pushes herself daily. She is an excellent volleyball player, a strong leader within the class and someone who sets an example of kindness, acceptance and determination, for her peers. She recently participated in Model UN, is a willing and active volunteer and someone who has grown as an individual throughout the year. Congratulations Emily!

Guatemala 2013 From March 20th to April 3rd, 4 students from Rundle College and 15 students from Rundle Academy travelled to Guatemala on a humanitarian trip with Hearts & Hands. The goal of the trip was to build 150 stoves in a rural area called Uspantan, while also experiencing Guatemalan culture. The trip lasted two weeks and involved five workdays, in which the 19 students managed to build 154 stoves, exceeding the goal! The remainder of the trip involved touring around places such as Panajachel, Antigua, and a boat trip across Lake Atitlan to Santiago. The long (but fun!) bus rides between towns and cities in Guatemala had amazing views and scenery of the abundant mountains and volcanoes. Although the touring was fascinating, the stove building seemed to be the favourite activity for the students. While building stoves, students were able to speak and interact in a variety of ways with the Mayan people; we found ourselves making tortillas, playing soccer, and even dancing. Those who were lucky enough to learn Spanish in Ms. Fitzgibbon’s class were (somewhat) able to have nice conversations with the Guatemalan families! Every family the students met were extremely grateful for the help, and smiles were brought not only to the faces of the Guatemalan families, but also to the students. The other highlights of the trip included watching the Easter processions, viewing intricate coloured sawdust and flower carpets in Uspantan, visiting Chichicastenango, climbing a volcano, and touring a coffee plantation. One night was filled with excitement and entertainment when the Rundle students taught students from Colegio Maya how to do the line dance and two-step, while the Mayan students taught Rundle how to do the traditional Mayan dances. This trip helped many students realize how fortunate we are to be living in Canada, with the abundant opportunities we have here.
