He is a go-to kind of guy who always finds the time to help his peers and teachers find a solution to any problem they might have (especially if it is tech related). His gentle humour, willingness to put his nose to the grindstone, and his complete and utter reliability make him an outstanding examplar of superb citizenship.

SOS (Skills of Survival) sessions are for those students that are super smart but a little scattered. Many students want and have the potential to do what’s required, but lack certain habits of the mind called executive skills. If your child struggles with getting organized, initiating work, time management, task completion, test taking and study skills, SOS is for them! Ms. Woods holds weekly SOS sessions in the library Wednesday’s at lunch.

Over the past couple weeks students have been slowly getting back into the school routine. For some grade 10’s it was even more stressful because if they were interested in becoming a Prefect for the 20122013 school year, they had to prepare a cover letter explaining why they would be a good fit for Prefects and then have a formal interview with Mr.Goettel or Mrs. McClements. The final stage was the voting process. This is where the grade 10 students vote for their Prefect representatives. After all their hard work, we finally have our official prefect team for the 2012-2013 year! Our Grade 10 Prefects this year are Alyssa Barry, Callum Westaway, Connor Killackey, and Sam Maclennan. Congratulations! We have an incredibly busy yet fun year ahead of us! Our first event was the Friday Night Lights Football game, which took place on September 14th. It was a huge success! The stands were filled with
fans and the fans were filled with Spolumbos sausage. We’d like to give a big thanks to all our sponsors and donators, including Spolumbos and Tony Spoletini who provided delicious food, and also returned to his role as our game commentator. The game was close, but our Cobras played awesome and defeated Holy Trinity with a score of 9-7. Something new this year is we will be having a suggestion box for those who have any ideas they would like to input. The suggestion box will be outside Ms. Moodie’s office. We are looking forward to another awesome year! Melissa Guenette and Nico Scarcello Head Girl & Head Boy

Leadership Conference Experience Inara Dattadeen & Amanda Burwash’s Experience We are Inara Dattadeen and Amanda Burwash, and we attended a People to People Leadership Summit at Stanford University in San Francisco, CA. It was held from August 5-11, 2012. The highlight of the conference for us was meeting people from around the world, including: the United States, Mexico, Bolivia, Korea, and Nigeria. The activities and workshops that we participated in were a ropes course, volunteering at the San Francisco Food Bank, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens workshop, and various career and interests assessments. On the first night, a motivational speaker, Jill Esplin, gave a talk about work ethics, values of life, and engaging properly with other people. Local sightseeing of San Francisco included a visit
to Alcatraz, driving across the Golden Gate Bridge, dinner and shopping in Chinatown, a photo stop at Twin Peaks, a bay cruise on the last day, and a bus tour of the city. The most enjoyable moment was when everyone in our group bonded and got to know each other, therefore making the activities, workshops, and overall experience more fulfilling. Attending People to People has made us realize that there are other motivated young people out there that want to make a difference, and that there is strength in numbers through teamwork. As students, we were exposed to people who came from all over the world and different walks of life, and this made us realize how we can use our strengths to work together to be better leaders.
Bronwyn Cram’s Experience My name is Bronwyn Cram. This summer I participated in a People to People Conference at Harvard University in Boston. This went on from July fifteenth to July twenty first. For me the highlight of the conference was meeting people from all over the world.
and I thought he did a very good job of teaching us lessons through stories we were interested in. While in Boston we got to see the John F. Kennedy Library, as well as historical churches. We also had a tour of the Harvard campus.
During the conference we participated in High Ropes, created service projects, and we volunteered at an underprivileged summer school, helping teach the children for a day. We also attended many lectures about leadership. A workshop we participated in was 7 Habits for Successful Teens. Sunjay Nath spoke to us on the second night,
I most enjoyed the day where we got to explore Boston. The program helped me to gain confidence, as well as to become a better leader. Also, I become more aware of the problems of the world. As we created our service projects it became clear to me what the major problems were
in each of the countries students were from. As a student, I became more confident and recommend students take advantage of opportunities like this.
Ashley Berry’s Experience
This summer, from August 5th to 12th, I attended a People to People Leadership Conference. This particular conference was held at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. The trip was an amazing experience and allowed me to grow as a person as well as a leader. Even though the entire conference was amazing, a huge highlight was meeting kids from all around the world. I have made several friends that I am still in touch with. It was very interesting to hear what life is like in different parts of the world and is an experience that I will never forget. Throught the conference, there were many different things that we did each day, but one of the most memorable experiences was working at the San Francisco Bank. For 3 hours I sorted fruit and ended up sorting over 9 000
lbs, which provided 9 000 people with fruit that day. Another activity we did at the conference was a 7 Habits of Highly Effective People workshop. A representative of the Franklin Covey Institute, Melinda Roach, came in and led us through an entire day of learning what makes successful people so successful. A highlight of the trip was getting to tour around the San Francisco area. We did a full audio tour of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge one day, and then went down to Pier 39 and had a guided bus tour another day. While at Pier 39, we took an amazing cruise around the San Francisco Bay area that allowed us to see San Francisco and other nearby cities from the water. The People to People Conference was filled with
great activities and workshops that made for an exceptional experience. Overall the entire People to People experiences was great, and I couldn’t have asked for anything more. This program taught me so much about myself and how I can become a leader in my school. I really grew as a student because of this experience. I am more involved in helping my peers in my school, and I have come to realize what a big difference we are able to make in this world. This leadership conference was one of the greatest experiences I have ever had, and I would love to go back and do it all again.
Melissa Guenette’s Experience This past summer I had the opportunity to attend Shad Valley at Dalhousie University in Halifax. Shad Valley is an enrichment program, which focuses on business and engineering. In November 2011, I completed the extensive application and sent it in. Around mid-April I was fortunate enough to receive the news of my acceptance! So in July I took a plane to Nova Scotia and stayed in residence with 49 other Canadian students. In total it lasted a whole month. In that month we learned and did so much; the days seemed to blur together. We did so many fun activities at Shad it’s hard for me to pick a favorite. Every weekend we’d complete an engineering challenge where the Shad P.A.’s would give us a task to complete within a couple of hours. One weekend we had to create a Rube Goldberg Machine. We pretty much had to create a very complicated machine to complete a very simple task. Our job was to unfurl the Shad Valley Banner. We broke into seven groups and began working away. When the time was up, I was impressed by the sophisticated contraption we had built. Even though it didn’t work as smoothly as planned, we managed to open the banner! That was one of the many memorable activities we did.
During the week, a typical day at Shad started like this: we’d wake up, have breakfast and attend the day’s first lecture at 9:00am. After a couple speeches, we’d then have physical recreation. Lunch was usually followed by a twohour seminar to finish off the afternoon. The seminar topics and speakers always varied. Many times the subject of the lecture had nothing to do with business or engineering. We had talks on agriculture, robotics, kite making, juggling and a lot more. After the seminar we’d eat dinner, which then lead to another guest speaker as well as House Time. House Time gave us a chance to work on the main focus of the camp, which were our house projects. The 50 of us were split up into 5 separate groups and we were challenged to create a tangible product solving an issue that was to be presented to us. This year the question was, “How do we prevent or decrease child obesity in North America?” We had to create a business plan, financial model, marketing plan, future projections as well as a prototype. At the end of the month, we got the chance to present our products to a panel
of judges, who then announced a winner. My group created a snow shovel aimed at getting kids outside and staying active during the winter season. The house chosen to advance to the Shad Cup had created stuffed animals with special weights in them designed to keep children active. On the weekends, we went on little excursions to places like Peggy’s Cove, Cape Breton, and Prince Edward Island. We had lots of time to have fun and tour around; the camp wasn’t entirely academic! Overall, my Shad Valley experience was absolutely phenomenal. Aside from everything I learned, I also met and became friends with the most amazing people. If I had to best describe Shad, I’d say it was magnificently life changing. The program helped me grow as a person and prepare myself for university. Plus, it gave me a better idea on what I’d like to do with my future. I highly recommend anyone interested in this program to apply, because it’s most definitely worth it!
Sadie Tim’s Experience
A People to People Conference is the experience of a lifetime! Days of fun filled activities and learning experiences make up a program that helps students to connect with people from around the globe. One minute, I might be talking to a girl from Saudi Arabia about fruit, the next minute I’m talking about languages with a guy from Puerto Rico. In the Film and Arts program, I met people from all corners of the globe who had the
same passion for Drama that I did. This 10 day program encompassed all areas of drama and film; we learned how to edit our very own movies and how to react to any situation. The group leaders rounded off the experience as they were knowledgeable and committed. The people to people program is a great way to spend a summer and a great way to gain valuable leadership skills.
Kelsea Gorzo and Saige Andreychuk’s Experience
This past summer we attended an NSLC Medicine & Health Care program at Berkeley California. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and learned a lot about medical and leadership skills. We participated in variety of activities including dissections, lectures and leadership workshops. This camp was an extremely memorable experience that we will never forget. NSLC provided an enjoyable way to have an introduction into the medical field whilst developing our leadership skills. We were required to be responsible and selfsufficient. We stayed in dorms and it was our responsibility to attend
meetings and lectures. During the camp, we were required to work on projects and listen to lectures from many faculties within the medical field and within UC Berkeley, including the school of optometry. The school of optometry is one of the highest schools for optometry students in the world. It was a pleasure being able to use the technology and getting the opportunity to interview one of the students attending the school. Along side the medical components, was a leadership workshop with Mr. Mike Walsh. He is a talented facilitator who led a series of lectures pertaining to leadership skills. His lessons were built on the structure
of individual strengths and weaknesses. We took a serious of quizzes that enabled us to comprehend our actions and emotions, and learn how to deal with them appropriately. Overall, this was an unforgettable experience that has changed us dramatically. We would highly recommend this camp to any individuals who are interested in an introduction to the medical field and want to discover more about themselves.
