CONTRIBUTORS NATHAN CAMPEAU Nathan Campeau began running in 1997 as a way to explore his new surroundings in Washington, DC. In 2003, Nathan discovered the beauty of the Minneapolis trail system while running the Twin Cities Marathon. A few months later, he moved to Minnesota and bought a house at Mile 15 of the course, and now he and his wife live at Mile 6. Last year Nathan competed in his first ultra, the Moose Mountain 50, placing fourth overall.
PATRICK O’REGAN Patrick O’Regan is a runner and freelance business writer. He is a graduate of St. Thomas College and the University of Minnesota. Born and raised in Montgomery, Minnesota, Pat currently resides in Inver Grove Heights. He runs eight to 10 races a year, mostly 5Ks and 10Ks, with two marathons to his credit. He has also “competed” in three National Championships.
CANDY PATRIN Candy Patrin is a writer who can be spotted running in the St. Croix River Valley area with her training partner, Radar, a chocolate Labrador retriever. She never tires of listening to running stories and is always on the lookout for article ideas. This year, Candy plans to get in more trail runs and compete in local races. FROM THE PRESIDENT
CREDITS Editor:
MICHAEL ISERMAN Dear RunMinnesota Readers, It’s been a great spring for running in Minnesota! Nearly all of the MDRA spring races enjoyed increased participation compared to 2011 (see chart below). The excellent race turnout so far this year can be attributed to the ideal spring weather conditions, increased promotion via Facebook and the MDRA e-newsletter and of course the fact that the well run MDRA events remain among the most affordable races in Minnesota. We can thank our outstanding race directors for their hard work and dedication to continuously organize topnotch events that are truly among the best race bargains around. I would like to recognize and thank the race directors of our spring events: Jim Rath (Lake Johanna 4 Mile), Michael Warden (MDRA 7 Mile), Jeff Winter (Ron Daws 25K), Peter Erpenbach (Fred Kurz 10 Mile), Lee Dittbenner (MDRA Mudball Classic) and Lowell Schow (Mom’s Day 5K). On behalf of the Board of Directors, we truly appreciate all that you do to ensure MDRA races “run” smoothly. Of course, organizing and delivering a high caliber running event can’t be done without the assistance of race volunteers. To the many outstanding volunteers who provide their time and support to MDRA, we also say “thank you”. In particular, I would like to highlight one of MDRA’s most dedicated volunteers, Norm Champ. Norm rarely, if ever, misses an opportunity to provide his services at MDRA events. In fact, I can’t recall an MDRA race at which I have not seen Norm helping out. In addition, he has been a member of
Heidi Keller Miler
Senior Editor: the Board of Directors for many years (currently Vice President) and also leads MDRA’s Race Committee. A heartfelt “thank you” to Norm for all that he does to serve MDRA and the local running community. In addition to the great turnout at spring races, MDRA has also experienced very healthy membership growth through the first quarter of 2012. As you may recall, we have been striving to build MDRA membership up to 2,500 members. I am very happy to report that we are making progress and approaching this goal. At the end of April, membership had reached 2,410 and still climbing. This is a net increase of 176 memberships since the end of 2011. It is very exciting to see this growth knowing that MDRA continues to be strong and able to fulfill our mission for the local running community: “To promote participation and safety in running and to serve as an information resource.” You can do your part to support MDRA by renewing your current membership and encouraging your friends and running partners to become a member of Minnesota’s oldest and largest running organization. Thanks for being a vital part of MDRA!

FROM YOU
Let us know what you think. Contact Heidi at heidi@runmdra.org.
2. If there is a wheel chair division…it is always safer to start with the wheelers. It is much safer for all runners to pass you rather than you trying to pass them.
Mark and Amanda Brunsvold
Dear RunMinnesota, Great issue! Thanks for all you do for the running community. I was reading the comments from the contributors regarding “running etiquette” and found them to be for the most part…dead on the money. However, as you know, I run/race with my daughter Amanda and naturally I would like to add to Pat Goodwin’s comments on running with strollers and pets. I think what each runner needs to decide BEFORE they enter with a stroller or pet is: “am I running this as a fun run or am I seriously racing”. Here are some strict rules that Amanda and I follow: 1. Always call the race director BEFORE the race and ask permission. It is always an exception if you are going to run with a pet or a stroller…and that the race needs to be respected as well as the other participants. Plus…there is no point embarrassing yourself if you are told at the start of the race that this is not allowed.

3. If there is not a wheel chair division accept the fact that you will more than likely be asked to start at the back of the pack. And when I say the back of the back…I mean dead last….don’t even think of crossing the starting line before that last runner has crossed the starting line. Usually we wait to cross the starting line until someone asks us to get going. This allows the runners to spread out before we catch up. Since most races have chip timing, why make a big deal out of trying to mix it up with the whole crowd? Also, starting at the back of the race can be great training, especially in Marathons where negative splits are a good thing. Always, always always….if you are going to include your child or pet on the course, please remember that they need to pay an entrance fee also (but do not give them a chip). Races cost money. If a stroller or a pet is on the course and sharing the road…it takes money to run a race and whoever is on the course needs to be a paid participant. 4. I agree with Pat that if you are a seriously racing at whatever pace you are running, strollers and pets can be a distraction. Amanda and I are content with starting wherever the race director puts us…at the beginning, the middle or last. We just want to participate. What a great way to introduce a young child to running than have their parent include them in a race….just as long as the parent is aware that they are running… they are not racing… they are participating….they are not competing. 5. If you are passing someone with a stroller or pet, please remember that is comparable to driving a semi in rush hour. Plan your move and make sure that everyone around you is aware of your presence. As mentioned in the article, many runners are listening to music and have no idea you are there, you need to be very vocal to make them know you are passing. Anyway, just a few of my thoughts, but as I said earlier, great job on this article and keep up the good work! Mark and Amanda Brunsvold Edina, Minnesota
FROM YOU Dear RunMinnesota, I had read Katherine Himes’ enjoyable interview article with Rick Recker regarding the beginnings of the Lowry Hill Climb in the January/February issue of RunMinnesota (“Running the Hills of Kenwood”). In it, she states that the hill climb five miler debuted in 1978. However, as a finisher of the 1977 Lowry Hill Climb, I have proof that the race actually started in 1977. I have attached the 1977 result sheet of the race with my first and only appearance in it (I finished one hundred and seventh as a 19 year old). I had coerced my [University of Minnesota] roommate, Craig Phelps (two hundredth place), who was not really a regular runner, but did quite well nevertheless, to run it with me. I recall us splitting a six pack in our dorm room the night before the race, and he seemed to think the race was a great idea. I really don’t remember much about the race itself other than it was as punishing as they say with the double climb and descend. The only other thing I recall were the race t-shirts that were yellow with brown graphics (mine long since wore out). I also believe that this was my first road race of any distance, me being pretty fresh out of high school. I also was aware of MDRA, but was not a member at that time. Also of historical note and just plain cool is the fact that we shared the road that day with the following local legends and/or folks I that knew personally who were way faster than me: • Jim Ferstle (the inaugural winner and long time running writer) • Steve Hoag (no comments necessary)
Results from the 1977 Lowry Hill Climb
• Tony Schiller (one of the best all time Minnesota and U.S. age group triathletes. I would later compete against Tony in several canoe/run/bike triathlons in southern Minnesota in the late 80s and early 90s) • Peter Wehrwein (he was an excellent two miler for Edina West High School. I tried to run against him as an Edina East [High School] runner) • John Naslund (the only person to have run all the Grandma’s and all the Twin Cities Marathons) • Rick Kleyman (long time Armstrong [High School] coaching legend and one of the early leaders of the running movement in Minnesota) • Rick Recker (one of the original MDRA members and current USATF Minnesota President) • Ron Daws (no comments necessary. My favorite Minnesota race was always the Ron Daws 25K in April: the old Puke’s Peak course ) • Paul Wellstone (yes, the deceased senator, and a pretty decent finish time as well) • Jack Moran (the man behind raceberryjam, the founder of the Twin Cities Marathon and more!) Later on in the 1980s, I took a hiatus from running and became a bicycle road racer for Kenwood Cyclery. The shop sponsored a criterium in the Kenwood Hills, for only a couple years at the most, that was equally as brutal. Thanks for the trip down memory lane! Andrew Holtum Phoenix, Arizona

Shirt, Shoes and Honey

Welcome to the first of (possibly) many installments of running related product reviews. To begin, I must issue a warning: as the title of this article implies, I am not an expert in running apparel in the slightest. I have been running for about 15 years, mostly in the same shoes (lots of Asics) and wearing much of the same clothing. I still often run wearing the first technical t-shirt I bought in 2000. I know what I like but I definitely don’t know all the products that are out there. I will attempt to provide an unbiased opinion of each product that I test. The purpose of this article (and others that follow) is to review newer products that have come on the scene that you may not be aware of. If you are like me, once you find something that works with running you don’t rock the boat, so you may miss out on hearing about new running related products. This column will hopefully introduce you to some new gear that you weren’t aware of. Three products are reviewed in this installment: tasc bamboo running shirts, New Balance shoes and Stinger energy food products.
tasc Bamboo Running Shirt
1
tasc (Technical All Season Comfort) running shirts are really an innovative product. The mostly organic technical shirts are made from 55 percent cotton, 40 percent bamboo and five percent elastane. I was really excited to try this product because bamboo products are typically more environmentally sustainable than petroleum based products. Bamboo grows quickly and is often the flooring material of choice in sustainable buildings so a shirt made from bamboo sounded too good to be true. I tested the tasc Performance Crew bamboo t-shirt over a period of several weeks and multiple washings. Since one of tasc’s big claims is that the natural fibers prevent odor, I balled up the sweaty shirt after a run and pulled it out of the hamper a couple days later (still no smell)! Here is a rundown of the pros and cons of the shirt:
Pros: Low Odor: tasc’s claim really holds up here. The shirt never developed the typical sweaty odor that regular performance wear does. In many ways the shirt reminded me of a technical wool shirt. However, instead of a wet woolly smell the bamboo shirt had a slightly sweet smell when damp. It’s not unpleasing, but it is odd (albeit better than an old sweaty technical fiber shirt).
New Balance 860 v2 Running Shoe In the 15 years I’ve been running, I have probably used over 100 pairs of shoes. Of those, approximately five were NOT Asics. In 1997 I found an Asics shoe that fit and I stuck with it. Over the years I’ve moved through a few models in the Asics line toward more minimalist shoes and now I usually run in the DS Trainers. I haven’t really branched out too much into other lines of shoes. When I was offered a chance to try out the New Balance 860 v2 running shoe, I jumped at the opportunity. The 860 v2 is a stability shoe, which is something I don’t really need and haven’t run in for a few years since my feet adjusted to the non stability DS Trainer. In spite of that, there weren’t a lot of noticeable differences from my normal running shoe other than this shoe was about an ounce heavier. Although I shouldn’t really be comparing the two shoes, since they have different purposes, here is my attempt at an objective review:
Pros: Comfort: The shoe feels very comfortable without being too cushioned. I’ve logged about 300 miles on the shoes and I’m sure I have several hundred miles left. Walkability: I like a running shoe that I can walk around in. I used to run in Asics 2100 stability shoes and I found that with the high heel the shoe was not comfortable for walking. When kicking around town or in the yard, the 860 v2 felt very comfortable. When I eventually buy a new pair of shoes I will likely transition the 860 v2 to my yard work shoes. Flexibility: In terrain, that is. I’ve logged many miles in these shoes on pavement, ice, snow and soft trails. The shoe has performed marvelously on all surfaces.
Cons: Fit: On the first run I developed blisters on the tops of both feet. I’ve never had this happen with another shoe. I’m not sure what was wrong, but after loosening both shoes I haven’t had any problems since. Price: $110, likely less at local running stores with your MDRA Discount! Where to Buy: Any local running store. Bottom Line: This is a really great, albeit boring, stability shoe. If I needed a stability shoe, I would run in this shoe with no hesitation.
MAY/JUNE 2012
6
Lightweight: For a natural fiber shirt it is very light, only slightly heavier than a normal technical t-shirt. When wet, the shirt retains a little more water than a technical t-shirt, but not much more. Breathes Well: I was expecting to overheat while running in this shirt, similar to experiences I’ve had while running in wool t-shirts. I didn’t notice any difference from a regular technical tee. Very Comfortable: The shirt has a very fine weave and feels like a very soft cotton t-shirt, even after multiple washings.
Cons: Too Long: The shirt fit well, except I noticed that it was a little long in the torso. It’s also very elastic, and when wet the shirt drags a little lower still. I will admit that I have a somewhat short torso, so the shirt length may not be as noticeable on someone with a more normal length torso. If you have a long torso you’ll love this shirt! Retains Water: As previously mentioned, the shirt seems to retain a little more water than a normal technical tee, but not too much more. Price: $30 Where to buy: http://tascperformance.com/shop/carrollton-t Bottom Line: If you prefer natural fibers, I recommend trying this shirt. The downside is you may end up with a really comfortable t-shirt that cost $30. The upside is that you may find this to be the perfect running shirt for you.
Honey Stinger Energy Two years ago I was on a train traveling from Amsterdam to Delft, the Netherlands. In a hurry to get to Delft to visit a friend, I didn’t have time to eat a proper breakfast. I stopped at the kiosk in the train station and noticed little packages of what looked like mini waffles. These tiny, dense waffles were called “stroopwaffles” and were seemingly soaked in pure honey. Basically, these things were like crack to me. Over the next 20 hours (the length of my entire stay in the Netherlands) I ate about 20 of these stroopwaffles and purchased bags of these delicious mini waffles to take back to the States. Upon my return to the United States, I have found stroopwaffles at only a few locations. Imagine my elation at finding out that stroopwaffles are sold by a U.S. energy and performance company called Honey Stinger. Obviously I loved the Honey Stinger stroopwaffles. But while mini waffles may be great as a pre or post run snack, or perhaps a great energy snack while biking or hiking (indeed, they are endorsed by Lance Armstrong), I can’t imagine eating such solid foods mid race or run. Actually, I can imagine it and it’s not a pleasant thought. Then I found out that Honey Stinger also makes energy blocks, similar to Clif Blocks, called Organic Energy Chews. I ran several long and short runs using the Honey Stinger Organic Energy Chews in the Lime-Ade and Pink Lemonade flavors. Here’s my review of the chews:
Pros: Delicious: Hands down, these are the tastiest energy chews I’ve ever had. In fact, they are the tastiest energy food products suitable for running that I’ve ever had. I even started eating them as snacks as I started craving the chews all the time! Must be the honey! Gluten Free: While this isn’t a big deal to me, I was happy to see that the chews are produced in a gluten free facility. It seems that more and more people are discovering they are gluten intolerant and it’s great to see “GF” options for those folks. Organic Ingredients: Many of the gels and chews out there taste so engineered and over processed. This organic product is made from the best type of sugar you can get, honey!
Cons: Packaging: The only concern I had with the chews is that the package is too large and bulky to comfortably use in a race or long run. You likely won’t want an entire package at once. I recommend splitting a package of chews into smaller baggies. The packaging seems to be designed more with bicyclists in mind than runners. Price: $2 a package. Each package could probably be split into two servings for a race. Where to Buy: Most of the local running stores carry them. I LOVE THEM! I can’t wait to try some of their other products including the gels and energy bars.

ON THE RUN
2012 National Masters Indoor Championships Recap Reflections on “ageless” performances BY PATRICK O’REGAN
S
ixteen world records fell during the National Masters Indoors held in the Gladstein Field house on the campus of the University of Indiana in Bloomington, Indiana. The stellar event featured some of the best men and women athletes, of any age, on the planet. Watching these athletes, and meeting a few, though my own race consumed much of my attention, was stirring and illuminating. In giving the highlights of the meet, I’ll add a few reflections the competition brought to mind on competing as a Masters runner. When I arrived in the field house on Saturday (the meet ran Friday to Sunday, March 16 to 18), the place was in an uproar. I saw right away that the reason for the commotion was a tall, lean, blond woman, who was lapping the field in the mile run. That was Jeanne Daprano. She broke the world record for W75 in 7:13.51. To put this in perspective, the average guy in his 20s or 30s, who works out a lot, can run a mile in 7:30. At this meet, Daprano also broke the American record in the 200 meters (36.53 seconds), and set world records in the 400 meters (1:21.28 seconds) and 800 meters (3:18.48 seconds). It’s hard to overstate how good this is. One recurring theme of Masters running is a return to athletic competition after years away from it. I am reminded of Bill Andberg, one of the best distance athletes in his
9
day, who returned to competition in his 50s after a 30 year hiatus, to become one of the best Masters runners around. Daprano decided to get back in shape in her 40s, and kept on getting better. I talked to Gary Hall, one of the best (M65) 1500 meter and 800 meter runners in the country. He, too, had a long break from athletic competition. A disturbing weight gain spurred him to get back in shape. Like Daprano, he just kept getting better. At this meet, Gary was second in the 3,000 meters, second in the mile and fifth in the 800 meters. Sometimes the physical encroachment of age or simple disability can force a layoff. We Masters athletes have a propensity to get hurt. Running, of course, exacts a physical pounding, and staying healthy is a big part of the game. As I prepared for the meet, in one of the last hard workouts, I pulled my right calf. Determined to finish my preparations, I wrapped it and continued to run hard, straining my left quad in the process. Ace bandages came to be a trusted friend. It’s interesting to note that Jeanne Daprano rarely runs long distances and doesn’t run every day. She spins on a bike and rows for endurance, lifting weights, besides, to strengthen her upper body. One of the stars of the meet was the inimitable Bill Collins. The much decorated athlete turned 60 and was gunning for
MAY/JUNE 2012
Local standout, Jim Schoffman
“Society wants so badly to categorize everyone, but the people here refuse to do that. It is inspiring to see these people. The body ages, but the spirit never does.” -Phil McConkey (M55)
world records in the 60 to 64 age category. He got two of them: in the 60 meters (7.58 seconds) and as a member of the 4 x 200 meter relay team (1:41.53). It was a stirring comeback. “Ten months ago,” he said to a reporter for the local paper, “I couldn’t even walk.” He had contracted Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a nervous disorder that can lead to paralysis. The support of the Masters community played a big part in his recovery. “It’s just so great being back among my Masters family,” he said.
One of the sterling traits of human nature at its best is the desire to get back all you can: first move, then walk, jog, run, really run, and, finally, for Collins, set world records. Collins’ recovery is a tale of triumph. As we age, the body, of course, is more subject to breakdown. Among the athletes at the meet, there must be many stirring tales of coming back from all kinds of afflictions. One of the competitors, Phillippa Raschker (W65), is one of the great athletes in the world. A multi-event athlete, Raschker
has held many world records in running and field events. She still holds the W45 indoor high jump world mark, set in 1994. Asked by a reporter how many world records she currently holds, she said, “It’s not that many. I think maybe 10. It’s time to start stacking up again.” In one world championship, she won 10 gold medals. In this meet, she competed in nine events and set world records in two: the W65 pentathlon (4,670 points) and pentathlon 60 meter hurdles (10.72). She also won the long jump (13’ 10 1/4”) and triple jump (27’ 11 1/2”). Raschker has been nominated twice for the Sullivan Award as best amateur athlete of the year. She’d be an outstanding choice. Indeed, some say she is the greatest female athlete of all time. All the news lately has been about Peyton Manning. He’s really something, but he’s not in this woman’s league. Among the athletes representing Minnesota was the fine runner Jim Schoffman. Taking advantage of his remarkable stamina and recuperative powers, Jim ran the 60 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters and 4 x 400 meters. In his best event, the 400 meters, he was fourth in 1:00.60. Not all athletes, of course, are outstanding. Many, like me, are ordinary folks who like to keep fit and enjoy the thrill that pushing one’s body to the limit brings. “First, be a good animal,” the running guru, George Sheehan, says. And, if you like to extend yourself by running hard, do that, too. Just use good sense; the will is often much stronger than what the body can bear. Because, as you Master athletes know, the problem is not the inability to work hard as we have as much spirit and will as ever. The problem is the inability to recover from hard work. Whatever the level of performance, all runners who take competition seriously are familiar with Mr. P: Pressure. Some people handle it better than others. When we profiled Carrie Tollefson, the
Olympic runner, for RunMinnesota, she told us that one of her friends, also a top-flight middledistance runner, gave up competing simply because she got tired of the pressure. I can understand that. The hours and days leading up to the start of a race can be onerous. Just get to the starting line, we tell ourselves, there is no other choice. When the gun goes off, the bubble of angst will burst, as the race consumes the attention. One of the top competitors, Phil McConkey, a sprinter and former NFL wide receiver, had this to say about the pressure of competition, “It’s tough for people to comprehend that nerves are all relative. I had the same sensations in grammar school [during competition] that I had playing football and even today.” Something should be said about the officiating, which was first-rate. One wants to say Olympian in its attention to detail and strict adherence to the rules at every race. A meet only works well if someone is in charge. The officials were firmly in charge. They made even pedestrian runners feel a part of something special. There is nothing like track and field competition: the preparation, the anxious buildup to the race, the competition itself, the intense satisfaction of having got to the starting line and given it everything you have in a hard individual effort. The experience is no less singular for a pedestrian athlete than for an Olympian. As Phil McConkey put it, “You have middle-aged men and women that have the same experience they did when they were kids. That’s amazing.” It is, indeed. My time in the race was dreadful, even for me. But it really doesn’t matter. I’m not competitive. Besides, as I see it, the fire is all. After the meet, I was back at the hotel, running on the treadmill. I can’t quit. And, I suspect, neither can you.
John Means, winner of the Men’s 90+ 60m
Records Fall Among the many notable achievements at the meet were the following: • Kathy Bergen (W70) – Kathy was the first woman to go under 15 seconds in the 100 meters at more than 70 years of age. At this meet she became the first woman over 70 to break 32 seconds in the 200 meters (31.86). • Robert Lida (M75) – Robert set world records here in the 60 meters (8.67), 200 meters (27.86) and 400 meters (1:03.90). • Christa Bortignon (W75) – Christa set world records here in the pentathlon, 60 meters, 200 meters, pentathlon 60 meter hurdles and triple jump. In two indoor meets this year, Christa has set 10 world records and 15 Canadian records. • Ralph Maxwell (M90) – Ralph bettered his own world record in the pentathlon (4,030 points). He also won the triple jump (18’ 3 1/2”). • Gary Patton (M65) – Gary won the 3,000 meters, mile and 800 meters and ran on the winning 4 x 800 meter relay team. • Nolan Shaheed (M60) – Nolan set an American record in the 3,000 meters (9:48.84). • Antwon Dussett (M35) – Antwon won both the 200 meters and 400 meters at the last outdoor world championships. He just missed the American record in the 400 meters here, running 49.61. He also won the 200 meters (21.96). • Roger Pierce (M65) – Roger won the 400 meters (1:02.86). He holds 13 gold medals in world Masters competition and 27 in national indoor and outdoor competition. • Joy Upshaw (W50) – Joy won the 200 meters at this meet. At the previous National Indoors, she set world records in the 200 meters (26.24) and long jump (17’10”).

GET TO KNOW
Top Notch Masters track standout, Jim Schoffman BY PATRICK O’REGAN
I
s a man of 58, Jim Schoffman’s age, any less of a runner, because of his age, than a man half as old? Does age dampen the quality of the performance? Are older runners less competitive? Less intense? Is the difference just a matter of glory, money and PR? Could the best running record of all be held by a man or woman of 70, 80 or 90? The running career of Jim Schoffman, one of the best masters runners in the world in the 400 meters and 800 meters for males 55 to 59 years old can shed some light on these questions. A little background is illuminating. Jim was born in Avon, Minnesota, not far from St. Cloud, in 1953. His family was distinctly more about brains than muscle. Neither his father, a chemistry professor at St. John’s University, his mother, a hospital dietician, nor any of his siblings were athletic. But Jim loved to run, and he had the engine for it. As a kid, “We’d
11
run around the house,” he recalled. “Often when it rained, in the mud. I was the youngest, but I could take them all.” Jim attended high school in Albany, Minnesota, seven miles from Avon, devoting himself to track and field with increasing intensity. Starting out as a hurdler, he was soon moved to the sprints, because his coaches recognized his speed. As a junior, he had his best year, competing outstandingly in the 100 yards (10.1 seconds), the 220 yards (22.3 seconds), the 440 yards (50.3 seconds) and the long jump (21’6”). In spite of the fact that he had to compete in all four of those events on the same day in the district meet, he made the Regional Championships in all of them. He got to the State meet in the 440. Running, as he vividly recalled, on the cinder track of old Memorial Stadium, in a rutted lane one, he failed to get a medal. Instead, the memorable runner Mark Lutz won the 440 that year. Jim agreed with the old adage of running: to get better, you have to put your body in a place it has not been in before. He recalled a workout from his high school days. “We’d run a 440 at a stiff pace and then immediately run a 110 as hard as we could go.” That will do it. By his standards, Jim struggled in his senior year. He made the regional meet in the same four events as the year before and ad-

vanced to the State meet in the 100. But he failed to make the State meet in the 440, his best event. However, he became even faster, lowering his 100 time to 10 seconds flat and winning the Outstate Championship in the 60 yard dash. Even then, there were other things besides running. Jim’s high school sweetheart (they both played in the band) was his future wife, Nancy. They have been married for 32 years. Getting an early start in the world of work, Jim was a stock boy for Arnie’s Bar on Main Street. For the sons and daughters of faculty at St. John’s University, tuition is gratis. Jim joined the track team there. As a freshman, he ran the 100, 220 and was on the 4 x 440 relay team. At the MIAC Conference meet, he placed fifth in the 220 and the 4 x 440 team got second. They would have won, but the anchor runner misjudged the finish line. Facilities matter. As a freshman and sophomore, Jim ran mostly outside in the winter, running repeats on a road in the snow and cold. The only option for running indoors was to run diagonally across the gym. Then, in his junior year, St. John’s built a new training facility. Encouraged, Jim started using weights and training harder. At the conference meet, he made the finals in the 220 and was fourth in the 440. He trained through the summer. Improving, as a senior, he was third in the 440 and anchored the 4 x 440 relay team to the conference championship. He lowered his personal record to 49.5 seconds, a time that missed the national meet by .1 second. That was it. After St. John’s, Jim quit running or any overt training. “If I had the urge to run,” he joked, “I’d call Runners Anonymous and they’d talk me out of it.” One has to wonder how he managed to stuff the talent, as one wonders the same about women before the 70s. But he did. Like a lot of terrific
runners, running was not in his life. In 1979, he married Nancy, who became a dental hygienist, and they had two children, Sarah and Brad. Jim rose to be operations manager of an electronics components distributorship. He was not running, but when the kids were old enough to be left alone for a few minutes, he and Nancy took walks every evening after dinner. One day, while they were walking, Nancy said to him, “You don’t like this, do you?” “It takes too long,” Jim said. They started to jog together and then run 5K races. In 1998, at age 45, Jim decided to take part in the St. John’s Varsity Alumni meet. “If I can’t run well, I’m not going,” he thought. He trained for six weeks and did run well: 65 seconds in the 400. The next year he lowered his time to 62 seconds, and the year after that got it down under 60 seconds. Then, life got in the way of running. In 2000 and 2001, Jim was adding on to the house and being around for the kids. Running was shoved aside. Finally, competition got his attention. He discovered track sites on the internet and made the acquaintance of Greg Schwab, the outstanding local Masters sprinter. “He’s been an inspiration,” Jim said. He started to train again. In 2004, Jim made the plunge into Masters running. He trained from the start of the year and entered the National Masters Outdoor meet in Decatur, Illinois, that summer. It was quite an awakening. Lining up for the 100, Jim found himself in the lane next to Billy “Whiteshoes” Johnson, the former star NFL receiver. He ran a very respectable 13.4. By 2006, training very intensely, Jim ran the 400 in 56.6 at age 52. Jim’s breakout as a Masters runner came in the National Championships in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in 2008. He had been training very hard that year, running repeat 200s in 28 seconds. “I’d get sick
after those workouts,” he recalled. In the meet, he was second in both the 400 (57.06 seconds) and 800 (2:14.44), while also setting a Masters personal record in the 100 in 12.51 seconds and running the 200 in 25.85 seconds. The relays are a highlight of any track meet. “The fans go wild,” Jim said. To run in relays and be competitive at the highest level, Jim joined the premier track and field club Mass-Velocity. Its membership includes some of the best athletes in the country and the world including world champions and Masters Hall of Fame members Roger Pierce and Tom Langenfeld. In 2010, Mass-Velocity won the National Indoor Team Championship, with Jim running legs on the first place 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 relay teams. In future years, Jim will be running for Mass-Velocity at the Penn Relays and Millrose Games. A look at Jim’s current training
is instructive: he trains five days a week. In the spirit of Mass-Velocity (“Not far, just fast”), most of his training is intensive (interval) running, with weights. Typical running workouts are 10 x 200 at 38 seconds, with one minute rest on an easier day and 6 x 200 at 31 seconds with three minutes rest on a harder day. Longer repeats are 300 meters at 36 seconds. As the season progresses, he lowers the time of each repeat and shortens the rest interval. As a Masters runner, no, as a runner, Jim’s best performance came in the 2011 World Cham-pionships meet in Sacramento, California. He won his 400 meter semi-final heat in 56.4 seconds and finished fourth in the finals, running 57.7 seconds. His semi-final time would have garnered a bronze medal. He also ran the 800 meters, taking eighth place in a race marred by poor tactics on his part.

A Champion’s Attitude Some of Jim’s comments best show his attitude toward running: Have you ever won a National Championship? “Not yet.” What do you think you can accomplish as a runner? “I can run a 55 [seconds] at age 60. That is one of my goals.” Do you look forward to age 60 [the next age category]? “Absolutely! Age takes on a whole different aspect now. When I get into a new age group, I am reborn.” Are you still trying to achieve the best performance of your life? “Yes. With age graded times, you can compare your performance now to when you ran in your 20s and 30s.” What causes a runner to decline over the years? “You lose strength … and training intensity… But sprinters lose it less than distance runners. That hasn’t caught up to me yet. My intensity is still quite high.” Is there an end to this? Will you be running in your 90s? “Oh, absolutely! I’ll keep training as hard as I can. I always want to try to get better. My heroes are those guys, like Hammond and Maxwell, that ran [in Maxwell’s case, still do] in their 90s.” Would you be running if you didn’t have a talent for it? “I like to think that I would, for the love of it. I admire those who do. The thrill is the same.”

Jim showed us videos of the 400 and 800 races at the 2011 Masters World Championships. To see 55 to 59 year old guys running like terrific high school runners, it was positively weird. We’ve interviewed some of the best athletes around, including three Olympians. Jim Schoffman and others like him are in that league. Carter Holmes contributed to this article.

(TRY)ATHLON Multi-sport events are trending up. Have you considered joining your friends in one? Here’s what you need to know to jump in. BY CANDY PATRIN
Maybe it was the short winter, the warm temperatures that brought people out on the roads or the buzz that Lance Armstrong returned to his triathlon roots. It seems like everywhere you turn there is someone training for a triathlon, either a first “tri” or one at a longer distance. There are, in fact, some interesting statistics that point to the increase in the popularity of triathlons.

According to the USA Triathlon (USAT) website, “Triathlon participation in the United States is at an all-time high, following unprecedented growth over the past decade. USAT can easily track the surge through its membership numbers, which surpassed 150,000 annual members in 2011. To put this into perspective, annual membership hovered between 15,000 and 21,000 from 1993 to 2000.”
Try a tri At TriFitness in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, co-owners Judi Fluger and Vicki Ostendorf attribute the growth in triathlons to a number of factors. For some, finishing a tri is on their “bucket list.” Others like the cross training aspect of the sport. And then there are those who are bored with their exercise routine and want to try something different. Fluger and Ostendorf have seen an 81 year old man complete his first tri and another guy who lost 167 pounds during the course of his training. They also say that the majority of new tri participants have a history of running or swimming in their background. Naturally, when three sports are involved in one event, there is a lot more that goes into the training and planning prior to a competition. Fluger and Ostendorf support tri athletes through programs they offer, such as a 12 week first tri training course, a tri club and other options mentioned on their website, www.trifitnesswbl.com. Their advice to first timers is to use the equipment you currently own, with a few exceptions, before spending a lot of
money on a new bike and/or other tri gear. For first triathlon essentials, Fluger and Ostendorf recommend a pair of tri shorts and a race belt. These items are not too costly and most likely are included in a kit if you join a tri club. If you decide to use a wet suit for the swim, you should rent one from a tri store or other reputable tri sport resource until you are ready to make an investment. If renting, make sure that you communicate with the rental location that you will be using the wet suit for a triathlon competition versus another water sport because there are differences in wetsuits. Another piece of advice for new tri athletes is to get familiar with swimming in open water. Fluger and Ostendorf say that people who learned to swim as kids may not realize that swimming as an adult, without stopping to play or rest, is a different experience. They suggest getting a swim coach who is familiar with triathlons to help you with such things as basic stroke technique, how to sight in open water and what to do if you should panic in the open water. Another part of tri competition that will come as a shock to runners is the registration fee. Over the years, runners have been pretty vocal about the rising registration costs for road races. In comparison, registration for the Lifetime Fitness Sprint Triathlon scheduled for July 14 this year (.25 mile swim, 15 mile bike and three mile run) is $149.00 plus service fees. Those registration fees increase with the distance of the event. For example, the individual
entry for the Wisconsin Ironman on September 9 this year (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run) is $625.00 and currently sold out. However, you can find registration fees around $100.00 per event for smaller, locally sponsored triathlons at the shorter distances. There are several contributors to the higher registration fees according to Fluger and Ostendorf. In addition to the insurance, there is a need for more staff, medical assistance, buoys, boats, lifeguards, law enforcement personnel, etc. The timing mats alone add to the costs. Tri athletes can expect splits for “in and out” of the water, “on and off ” the bike and “out and end” of the run. Results will reflect the time you spent on each sport as well as your transition times between disciplines. All of these preparations add to the safety of the event and, ultimately, the fun. Fluger and Ostendorf both stress the fun and camaraderie associated with tri training and competition. And while there may be some unknowns associated with tri competition that can raise your apprehension level, those athletes who have literally “taken the plunge” seem to be hooked.
Newbie Kim Togstad, Chaska, Minnesota, started running 20 years ago when she was in college. During the last seven years, she has consistently participated in running distance events. Togstad got into triathlons to beat the monotony of running (especially in the winter when training on a treadmill) and to add some variety to her workouts. Her
first questions when considering a tri were how should I train and what do I wear. Togstad completed her first tri this winter, the Tri-U-Mah! Indoor Triathlon at the University of Minnesota. Currently she is registered for the Buffalo Triathlon (sprint distance) in Buffalo, Minnesota, on June 3. Togstad admits to a slight fear of open water swimming and wants to see how things go for her in Buffalo before signing up for another tri and/or a longer distance. Her training currently includes running three days a week with speed, hills, and long runs being the typical workouts. Togstad also swims three mornings a week with the West Express Swim Team's master's program in Chaska, Minn. a routine she started a year ago. She will add biking now that spring has arrived. To date, Togstad has purchased a Felt entry-level tri bike (approximately $1,000.00) and a trainer that her husband gave her as a gift ($300.00 range). She plans to rent a wet suit from Elsmore Aquatics for the Buffalo Triathlon. Togstad admits that the information available about triathlon gear and training can be overwhelming. “I speak running, but the triathlon world has its own language,” says Togstad who feels comfortable talking shop at a running store and a bit intimated at a tri store. Her advice to someone considering a tri is to “get in the pool.” During the next couple of months, she plans to adopt a tri workout plan that describes things in the terms she is comfortable with and gets her to the point of putting the three pieces together in a “brick” workout (newly learned tri term meaning back-to-back workouts of two different elements of a triathlon).
Sprint Throughout high school, Amanda Melquist, Chaska, Minn., competed in swimming as well as gymnastics and track (primarily sprints and hurdles). About five year’s ago, she signed up to train for her first 5K, which subsequently lead

to a couple of marathons. In 2009, Melquist participated in the YWCA Women’s Triathlon (500-yard swim, 15.5-mile bike ride, 5K run) as a way to challenge herself while training for her first marathon. “I really loved the experience of the all-women triathlon and have done it almost every year since [except one year when she was pregnant].” says Melquist. Currently Melquist swims three days a week, about 2,500-3,000 yards per workout, with the West Express Masters Swim team. She also runs with a group from the Chaska Community Center three days a week and gets in a weekly cycle/sculpt class. To date, Melquist has been able to keep her tri expenses to a minimum. During her first year, she competed with her mountain bike from college and only purchased a pair of tri shorts and top for a total of about $100.00. She also found some clips and bike shoes online through eBay. Last year she bought new TYR shorts that were about $100.00 and a garage sale road bike for $50 followed by an additional $150.00 for a tune up and bike fitting. “The road bike isn't the right size for me, but it works with my current budget,” says Melquist. This summer she plans to do the YWCA Women’s Triathlon once

again on August 12, the Lake Waconia Half Marathon and a few other races. Her goal is to continue to run and swim to stay healthy and active. “Running and swimming help me focus on me and adult interaction, since I am a stay at home mom with three kids ages 1, 5 and 8,” says Melquist. Melquist encourages everyone to tri a triathlon, especially the sprint distance. She has a few other words of advice… • Practice swimming in a lake before your event—it is completely different from swimming in a pool in the ability to see where you are going and to also have other people kicking and bumping you. • Bring a towel to your transition spot to layout your gear and wipe your feet after the swim. • Your legs will feel like “jello” after the bike—it will seem like you are going slowly but you will probably be running at your regular pace. Since doing her first triathlon, Melquist has sought out advice wherever she can find it—tri store personnel, presentations, printed training programs. “I have learned that it doesn't matter how fast or slow you are, everyone cheers you on and the camaraderie is wonderful,” says Melquist. “ It also does-

n't matter what age/shape/size you are, anyone can do a triathlon if they put their mind to it!”
Ironman Sadie Briggs, Chaska, Minnesota, likes to set challenging goals, having logged eight marathons to date including Boston. Briggs got interested in doing a tri when a friend signed up for her first. “ I had a full fledged panic attack my first open water swim and was terrified to open-road bike,” says Briggs. “With the right group of training partners, I learned to love both.” Briggs describes herself as an “all in” girl. She did her first sprint tri last June, first Half Ironman last August, and is training for the Boise Half Ironman this June in addition to the Ironman Wisconsin in September. Due to a stress fracture, Briggs needed to change up her training a bit. Currently, swimming is her only option for cardio work. In the past, the pool was her least favorite training option, however the injury has given her a different perspective. “You know what I discovered after being forced into the pool day after day,” asks Briggs. “I love it! Who knew?” Briggs is well aware of the equipment costs associated with triathlons in comparison to running, especially if you get attracted to all the “bells” and “whistles.” She has purchased a $99.00 Xterra wetsuit and a Velo Vie road bike for about $2,000.00, as well as some higher end goggles for $25.00. She has a few tips for people who are considering their first triathlon… • Find someone to mentor you and help you with all the questions you will have, such as what to pack in a bag, how to set up a transition area, what to eat and drink during competition, etc. • Practice open water swimming (but not alone) because it is very different from swimming in a pool. If you get your heart rate up because you panic on the swim, the race is all but over.
• Do not compare yourself to the pros. They are amazing to watch and their times are “jaw dropping” but at the end of the day everyone wears the same shirt and gets the same medal. Be proud of yourself for finishing such a demanding sporting event! Briggs has found the triathlon world to be a very friendly and helpful place. She taps into the resources of other athletes before taking a tip from a book or website. She also recommends looking for tri training partners or groups, taking care to find people with similar schedules and goals. “You can only give to the sport what you have to offer at this time in your life,” says Briggs. “If you surround yourself with people who are at a different spot, you will quickly find yourself being pulled in directions you don't want to go. Training partners are essential to pass the long hours but just make sure they are likeminded and have similar goals as yours.” Whether you are looking to do your first triathlon, want to take advantage of the cross training, or keep boredom away, there are numerous resources available to help you. Stop at your nearest tri store, look for the closest tri club or simply browse through the races in your MDRA calendar. You will be amazed at the options available and the race details found on each event’s website. And, if you are a bit apprehensive and want some VIP attention, Flugel and Ostendorf offer an option to “rent a mentor” (who stays with you throughout the event) at My First Tri Triathlon on June 23 in Hudson, Wisconsin.

Fitger’s 5K Recap – Duluth BY BOB GUSTAFSON ONE OF THE TRUE SIGNS OF SPRING in northern Minnesota is the Fitger’s 5K Run and Walk. The 23rd running of the race was held April 21, 2012, in Duluth with a record 1,848 registrants. St. Paul’s Mike Reneau, 34, claimed the men’s division finishing in 15 minutes, 10 seconds – just two seconds shy of the course record held for the last ten years by Duluth’s Jeremy Polson. Reneau will be back in Duluth June 16 to compete in the USA Half Marathon Championships which Grandma’s Marathon is hosting this year and again in 2013. Katie Koski, 39, of Duluth, won the women’s title with a time of 17:48. The victory was her fifth in event history. Both Reneau and Koski raced in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials earlier this year in Houston. Many of those participating use the race as a warm up for June’s Grandma’s Marathon weekend races. A total of 1,597 finishers (1,497 runners, 100 walkers) completed the course through Duluth’s downtown and Canal Park. The event raised more than $20,000 for the Young Athletes Foundation (YAF), a Grandma's Marathon program established in 1990 to assist with promoting and developing youth athletics in northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin.

RunMinnesota: The March/April issue is in process, publish early April.
A high volume of general renewals in March, plus the addition of new members from the Explore Minnesota promotion, resulted in a significant membership boost. The numbers from March 2011 were skewed high due to an overpayment from our online service provider; nonetheless, MDRA is on track for increasing its membership base as the overall membership total is accurate.
