CONTRIBUTORS STEVE DEBOER Steve DeBoer moved to Minnesota at the age of six months and began running shortly thereafter. Since July 20, 1970, Steve has run every day, which gives him the third longest running streak in the United States and the longest east of the Rockies. Steve moved to southern Minnesota in 1987, allowing him to get in a few more shirtless runs each year. In his spare time, he works as a registered dietitian at the Mayo Clinic.
SONIA JACOBSEN Sonia Maassel Jacobsen savors activities that allow her to embrace fresh air year-round. Sonia began running when she gained way too many pounds during a pregnancy. That kid is now 28 and just ran her third marathon. Sonia has explored many parts of the world on foot. A favorite was the Hoover Dam Half Marathon which she ran with her daughter Heather.
CANDY PATRIN Candy Patrin feels fortunate to be a runner and enjoys every aspect of her training in the beautiful St. Croix Valley. She never tires of connecting with other runners to hear their stories. And she enjoys writing about new running topics. This year, Candy will be doing her first triathlon in August. She can be reached at cjpatrin@gmail.com.
PATRICK O’REGAN Patrick O’Regan is a runner and freelance business writer. He is a graduate of St. Thomas College and the University of Minnesota. Born and raised in Montgomery, Minnesota, Pat currently resides in Inver Grove Heights. He runs eight to 10 races a year, mostly 5Ks and 10Ks, with two marathons to his credit. He has also “competed” in three National Championships.
ALEX KURT Alex Kurt is an avid runner who writes infrequently, sporadically, and often poorly. He has written for Running Times Magazine, Trail Runner Magazine, Ultrarunning Magazine, and Down the Backstretch. A native of the Twin Cities, he ran cross country and track at St. Thomas Academy and at St. John’s University. He lives in Minneapolis.

Those of you that have faithfully read (there must be a couple of you) my first two President letters, may have noticed a trend for advocating giving back to the organizations we support, especially MDRA. I can think of a no more true example of this spirit than two of our longtime supporters, Sally and Tom of Linden Hills Great Harvest Bakery. We all have “raced for the cookie” during our MDRA races, and it is the multi decade contributions of Tom and Sally that have allowed us to savor the chocolate chips after the run. Sally and Tom have “quietly” retired and transferred their business to their manager, Steve. Tom emailed : “He has all the race information.” We hope MDRA can carry on the sponsorship of our races by Linden Hills Great Harvest. Next time you’re there, make sure to thank them, and please join me in giving a big thank you to Tom and Sally. With this month’s message I’d like to change the tact slightly and speak to some of the themes I have noticed, heard and observed from races, runners and people in general. My first observation may come as a shock to readers, but quite honestly, runners are slightly off base, odd, weird. I don’t know quite why this is, but you don’t need to hang around “fellow travelers” very long to notice some strange habits and sights.
• Just what is it with some of us who insist on wearing their bibs on their backs? Or crunch the bib so it “deflects wind better?” Folds the bib so only the number is displayed? And of course, pins the tear tag, effectively thwarting the purpose of the tag? And a related question. What happens to all the safety pins that go out at every race, never to be seen again? • Just what sort of fashion statement is the Race T? I have had many instances of participant’s delaying the t-shirt line as they judge the shirt size versus their expectations, even ignoring the race start trying to determine the perfect fit. Folks are you there for the shirt or the race (I hate to let you in on the eventuality that you will be donating all your race shirts.)?

• What is it with the tech runner’s snubbing the minimalists? I am speaking here of the Garmin clad, Camelback wearing, new year’s color scheme touting, up to the minute trend setter runner (running stores must love you) versus the cotton sweatpants, shoe goo repaired running shoe, participants in our sport. Everyone at our races, especially the Spring Series, free to members, deserves our welcome with open arms. We are all runners (or used to be). • Why are runners’ so cheap? Is there something in our DNA that we are attracted to a sport that originally did not even require shoes? Is it the minimalist nature in some of us that we deny ourselves new shoes until we hit our “miles per pair” while ignoring the fact that “shoes are cheap” compared to a single visit to the doc? Why do we deny ourselves so much in favor of training, and then feel guilty if we move up to sustaining membership with MDRA, which supports what we supposedly love and devote so much of our waking moments too? • Finally. Why aren’t more of you running for the board and officers? You never realized you (as President) could have a bi-monthly sideboard to post whatever popped into your mind? You never thought your innerbrain banter could be read by a couple thousand souls so starving for entertainment they’d read the President’s Letter? And comment on it! Oportunity!
Norm Champ Enjoy every run!

FROM YOU Hello Candy & RunMinnesota, Thank you for the great article you wrote on the upcoming 2014 Minnesota Senior Games and 2015 Senior Games. I am a former runner (1970s and 1980s) turned racewalker (since 2005). I’ve participated in the Minnesota Senior Games since 2009 and have competed in the last two National Senior Games. I am so very excited that the Nationals are coming to Minnesota. I’ve been working on all my friends and relatives to get them to participate. Because of the strong running community in Minnesota, especially the metro area, I hope that there is a big turnout for both the Minnesota and the National Games. Having your article reaching the MDRA community I am sure will help. Even though I racewalk, I belong to MDRA. There are few racewalk competitions in Minnesota or the Midwest, so now and then I enter a running race, and racewalk it as training to increase my speed. As a former runner, I also like to keep up on the going’s on of the running community. Good luck in your quest to qualify for the Nationals. Stay Golden (slogan for 2015 Nationals)! Thanks again,
Anita Macias-Howard

RUNNING STREAKS
Minnesota Streak Runner Update and a Farewell to Dad BY STEPHEN DEBOER
A
s the snow has disappeared, we have uncovered four more streak runners (defined as running at least one mile daily for at least one year) who reside in our state, bringing the total up to 58. California is the only other state with more than 50 (about 65 at last report). One runner, Gary Lundeen, has yet to report the specific dates he ran daily in the past. The others are currently active.
55. Gary Lundeen 56. Dave Shannon 57. Jon Green 58. Russ Beaver
St. Louis Park, Minnetonka Shoreview Dec 26, 2012 – present Brooklyn Center Mar 1, 2013 – present Maple Grove May 28, 2013 – present
Unfortunately during the last six months, three runners (Brian Short, Steve Morrow and Chris Kartschoke) have had to take time off from running, so we are still at 29 persons who are actively streaking for one year or longer. Also, I must sadly report the first death among Minnesota streak runners. Wendell DeBoer died April 22 at the age of 89 years and 10 months at his home in Falcon Heights, Minnesota. Born and raised in South Dakota, he moved to St. Paul in 1955 to go to graduate school at the University of Minnesota, with wife Marjorie and infant son, Steve. After receiving his Ph.D. in 1959, he worked for the University until his retirement in 1993. Wendell was never much of an athlete. In his autobiography, he wrote, “My only sport in high school was track in my freshman year. Since they didn’t have a mile or two mile race at that time, there was no hope for me.” But, with the encouragement of his two oldest sons (he and Marjorie had three sons and two daughters), Steve and Dave, he started running in October 1972, at the age of 48. So began his 40 year “love affair” with running that covered over 66,000 miles. When he learned there would be a race at Langford Park in St. Paul on the July 4 in 1974, he decided to run the four mile event with all three of his sons. He finished first among those 50 and over and would go on to run over 100 other races, including a total of 33 times at Langford. Dave won the four mile that year, Steve was second and youngest brother, Bob, won the two mile in the 15 and under category. His best time for the four mile was 27:42 at age 54. His kids thought it would be no problem to beat it when they got older, but they were wrong. Dave ran 27:31 at age 53, but his 27:52 the next year was ten seconds too slow. Steve was able to do it, with a 27:24 the next year, but needed a strong finishing kick. Bob has already predicted he won’t beat it when he turns 54 in 2015.

JULY/AUGUST 2014
Wendell, Steve, Dave and Bob, after the 2004 Langford July 4 races Wendell held the 60 to 64 age record for the Langford race until last year, when it was broken by Dan Morse, and his 65 to 69 mark still is the best. After his bypass surgery in 1992, he switched to running the two mile and has the top three times for 70 to 74, 75 to 79 and 80 to 84. He is the only person to run this event over 80, the last time being at age 85. After getting a compression fracture in his back, he had to quit running, but still walked the two mile course at age 88, helping the DeBoers win their 21st Family Award (based on number of participants). In 1978, Steve and Dave were running every day, so Wendell decided to try it too, becoming the first person over 50 to make it one year without missing a day. By February 1979, he was the seventh Minnesotan identified who met the one year requirement, six of whom ran some of their streaks while residing in St. Paul (Steve Gathje, John King, and John Magnuson being the others). This also made the DeBoers the first family in the country with three or more members who ran daily. Since then, two other families have done that in Minnesota: the Case family (Paul, Sherry and Klare) and the Gilman s (Al, Pete and Liz), though Klare has not yet registered their streaks with the U.S. Running Streak Association. From 1978 to the end of 1988, Wendell only missed two days, also becoming the first 60-year-old to run every day. From 1989 to 2008, he usually missed a few days each year. In 1993, he had bypass surgery but got back to running within a couple of months. At age 84, he started another streak, which ended when he suffered a compression fracture in February 2010 at age 85 years 7 months, making him the first 80-year-old running daily. He then continued to walk almost daily until developing pneumonia in August 2012. The Streak Association has only certified daily runs from three individuals born before 1930. Ted Corbitt (1919 to 2007) had a 15 year streak that ended in 1968, when he was 49 years old. Ted was 88 years and 10 months old when he died, making him the second longest lived streak runner after Wendell. Herb Fred, of Houston, Texas, will have turned 85 years of age on June 11, 2014, and has run daily for at least one year nine different times, the most recent ending in March 2014, at age 84 years 8 months. So his latest streak ranks second to Wendell for age at streak’s end. Currently there is no one age 80 or above with an active running streak, though Herb and 83-year-old Walt Byerly of Dallas, Texas (who has two running streaks, one of which lasted 36 years), are back to running daily, so they could reach one year in 2015.

Going the Distance x 200 200 marathon plus races and counting for Mary Croft BY CANDY PATRIN
M
DRA member Mary Croft completed her 200th marathon (or longer distance) on Sunday, February 16, at the Lost Dutchman (LD) Marathon in Apache Junction, Arizona. She took first place in her age group with a 4:41.28, adding to her eight previous LD age group wins. Croft, who divides her time between Bayport, Minnesota, and Tucson, Arizona, ran the inaugural LD 13 years ago. She likes the location of the race that takes place in a pristine setting by the Superstition Mountains. There are many details that go into the organization of the LD, such as making the 40 or so campfires that help to provide warmth while runners wait for the 7:00 a.m. start time. Included in Croft’s 200 marathons and ultra races are six of the seven continents with only South America remaining. In addition, she has completed marathons in all 50 States, finishing the last one in July 2009 at the Psycho Wyco 50K in Kansas City, Kansas. She began her running career in 1981, and did her first marathon in 1982. It was Croft’s husband, Dave, who saw an ad in the newspaper for the inaugural of what is
now the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon (TCM) with a scenic urban course that started in Minneapolis and ended in neighboring St. Paul. She has finished every TCM, a total of 32 to date, and is a charter member of the event. In 1986, after Croft had completed 10 marathons, she entered the Edmund Fitzgerald 50K race in Duluth, Minnesota. The “Ed Fitz” became the first of her ultra distance races that would range from 50K up to 100 miles. “I found that my strength is in endurance, and I am average when it comes to speed,” says Croft. Croft says her most memorable race was in 2000 at the 75th anniversary of the Comrades ultra marathon starting in Durban, South Africa. Another special race took place in March 2013 when Croft traveled to the Copper Canyon, Mexico for the 50 mile run, which she describes as a “holistic experience.” The 2013 event was held in memory of its founder, the late Micah True, known as Caballo Blanco. Reaching her 200th marathon or longer milestone is only part of Croft’s running bio. She enjoys offering encouragement to other runners who she meets in races and at regular group runs. Croft has also given countless hours to

the sport by volunteering her time and talents at events such as the Superior Trail 100 miler in northern Minnesota, the Tucson Marathon and the Old Pueblo 50 mile trail run in southern Arizona. For 10 years beginning in 1983, Croft served as the race director and organizing force behind the Stillwater (Minnesota) Prison Marathon, where she worked as a nurse. Both inmates and runners from the community participated in the marathon, running a course of 112 laps around the yard within the prison walls. Not one to sit still for long, there are more marathons and longer events on Croft’s schedule. In April 2014, she completed a 50K close to the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia, and in November she
plans to do a trail marathon near the Andes Mountains in Argentina, which will be her last continent. Locally there is always TCM on the calendar for October as well as the Bank of America Chicago Marathon the following weekend. Congratulations Mary and keep on running.

FAV O R I T E R A C E
The Years Go By A great day Brookings Marathon worth the wait BY SONIA JACOBSEN The years go by. You think to yourself, “It’s only been a little while since I ran a marathon.” Then you look at the calendar and realize it’s been almost five years. You’ve changed age categories. Your body has some creaks that didn’t used to be there. So is it worth it to give it another try? I took three plus years off from marathon training while I served as the first female President of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE). It was the right call. I enjoyed the years of leadership but they were busy with travel, meetings, phone calls and more. Training time just wasn’t there. I had planned to make my comeback in 2013, but in January I fell on the ice (not while running)
8
and ruptured my left hamstring. Surgery was needed to reattach it to the pelvic bone. Because of the ice and snow that winter, I was mostly house bound. The doctor finally said I could try a few steps of running in July 2013. I only ran two 5K races in the fall of 2013 and quickly realized I was not ready to resume racing. Running has always been good for weight management for me. My husband and I decided to work
JULY/AUGUST 2014
together and support each other to drop a few pounds, and we did. I had looked at the Brookings, South Dakota, marathon website several times over the years. I had been discouraged by the policy that allowed double and triple dipping of awards and the date had interfered with family activities. For some reason, I looked again in 2013 and realized the leadership team was different at Brookings. It was still a flat, fast course but now they banned double dipping. I pulled out an article from Inside Triathlon magazine (Nov. 2003) that had a training schedule based on time, not miles. It was a 12 week plan intended for someone who had a reasonable mileage base before starting it. I was over 25 miles per week running. I was working with a personal trainer at the YMCA building strength in the hamstring. I asked
her advice on marathon training and then built a plan that strengthened my core and hamstrings. As you all know, the winter of 2013 to 2014 was long, cold and snowy with icy roads. I did many long runs on the treadmill at the YMCA watching more than one full length movie. Occasional trips to other places gave me a rare opportunity to run outside. My body was responding well, and I signed up for the Brookings marathon. My personal trainer had just suggested changing the training plan for the last few weeks. She proposed running only three days per week and doing a high intensity training one day and a plyometrics training one day a week. One day was to be core and flexibility (yoga). On April 4, I awoke with a really sore arch in the left foot (which is my bad leg, just watch me walk from the back sometime). I immediately stopped running and started stretching, icing and taking ibuprofen like I had plantar fasciitis. I had last had plantar fasciitis 18 years before and had avoided a recurrence by stretching and avoiding jumpy, bouncy things like jumping rope and jumping jacks. I immediately scheduled an appointment with a podiatrist that was new to me. I was able to see that doctor April 8. She took x-rays to confirm that it was not a stress fracture (it wasn’t) and then increased the dosage of ibuprofen for two weeks. She said no running, which meant a total of about 10 days of only cross training with biking, swimming, using the elliptical trainer. On a Saturday when I had originally scheduled a three to three and a half hour run, I biked for two hours and used the elliptical trainer for about 75 minutes instead. The podiatrist had me try a three mile run after 10 days of rest where I’d run about a half mile, do a series of stretches, run another
half mile, more stretches, etc. She also encouraged me to see my orthotist and get a new pair of foot orthotics. I followed the doctor’s orders. The new foot orthotics were to come in after the Brookings Marathon so I paid for expedited shipping which brought them in four days before the marathon. The running I did always included many stretch breaks. My body was feeling good (but whose wouldn’t on a steady diet of ibuprofen?) so I decided to attempt the Get In Gear 10K which was a team event. One teammate was running Boston Marathon so wasn’t sure she’d be up to racing five days later. I decided I’d rather know the bad news in a 10K in the Twin Cities than drive over to South Dakota and find out mid-race that the foot wasn’t strong enough. I am pleased to say that I ran Get in Gear conservatively, and the foot had no complaints after the race. I planned a very light training week between Get in Gear and Brookings. Gary Westlund, when coaching Team Diabetes a number of years ago, had always said it’s better to be 20 percent undertrained than 10 percent overtrained. The drive to Brookings went well (about four hours from Saint Paul) with a book on audio CDs for company. Number pickup was at the Children’s Museum which was recently reviewed in the Star Tribune as a great place to go. A 5K was held Friday evening. The hotels and restaurants in Brookings offered discounts and accommodations for runners. I stayed at the Hampton Inn and the manager arranged for a cold breakfast, heavy on carbs, to start before 5:00 a.m. A hotel shuttle would bring runners to the start and back from the finish. I chose to drive over and park near the start. The marathon, half marathon and marathon relay all began at 7:00 a.m. The weather was in the 40s, and it felt great for running. The course was as advertised: flat and fast. I was impressed at how Brookings turned out to cheer on the runners. Many local teams
were doing the relay but the spectators cheered for everyone. We marathon runners had a special red bib that seemed to inspire extra words of encouragement. Several sections of the course were on bike trails. Many sections had trees that blocked the wind. As the morning progressed, however, the wind from the northwest got a little stronger. The course finishes going west and north so the last few miles took some stamina. Race organizers had emailed me in advance for a very short narrative to read as I crossed the finish line. My message mentioned this was a comeback after a five year hiatus. Volunteers and other competitors congratulated me for pushing myself to run a marathon again. I was the oldest woman registered for the marathon and won my five year age division. My prize was a stocking cap with the Brookings logo on it which I will wear with pride. The tech shirt was a zippered pullover with the thumb notches in the sleeves. Nick’s Hamburgers offered free burgers to all runners, volunteers, and spectators, but I didn’t feel up to waiting 25 minutes for a burger. Would I do it again? Ya, sure ya betcha. I’m very proud that I set a goal and didn’t give up. Sure, detours occurred and the training plan had to be revised. But I listened to my body and accepted that I was training an older model this time around. I wasn’t planning a drastic reduction in mileage the last four and a half weeks but that’s what happened, and I consider it a blessing that I adjusted and was still able to finish. My finish time was 4:10:11. For comparison, a Boston Qualifier for a woman my age is 4:10:00. All in all, a good comeback effort!

THE
Perfect
Storm History made at Grandma’s Marathon BY ALEX KURT
It took perfect conditions, a perfectly run race and 33 years’ worth of attempts, but Dick Beardsley’s course record at Grandma’s Marathon is history due to Dominic Ondoro. Dick Beardsley was waiting for the start of this year’s Grandma’s Marathon, which he would be calling live for local radio, when he noticed something about the weather. Sitting in the lead vehicle on the road outside Two Harbors, just in front of the start line, he saw fog so thick Lake Superior would not be visible from the race route. The temperatures were cool. What little wind there was would be at the runners’ backs on the point-to-point course. “I thought, wow, this is eerily similar to 1981,” he said, referring to the day he ran 2:09:37 at this race to claim the course record, which had stood a whopping 33 years. “I mean, the conditions were absolutely the exact same. It was amazing.”

Not that he was about to put money on his record being broken. It had survived every scare, onslaught upon onslaught, from runners with PRs faster than 2:09 and others who tried to challenge, but made their moves either too early or too late. “I never thought it would last as long as it did,” Beardsley said. “Shoot, I even thought I might come back in 1982 and run faster.” “But the last 20 years or so, that’s always been the question. Will it go down this year?” he continued. There was 2002, when a large pack hit 20 miles in 2:09 flat pace. But they collectively fell apart, with Kenya’s Elly Rono winning the war of attrition in 2:10:57. There was last year, when Beardsley says one runner declared ahead of time that he could better his PR of 2:06 (He didn’t.). Did Beardsley have the slightest premonition that this year could be different? “I’ve always said that to break the record, to run sub-2:10 even, it takes a perfect storm,” he said. “You’ve got to run sub-five [minutes per mile] pace from the getgo, and with a group of guys to push the pace. In ’81, I had Garry [Bjorklund] with me, and one guy is all it takes.” He watched from the lead vehicle as the leaders did just that. “They started off well under five, and there was a big group that dropped down to eight or so guys,” Beardsley recounted. “At the halfway mark, they came through in 1:04:45. 2:09:30 pace. And everyone was looking good.” But he then watched as the pace slowed in the grueling miles between the halfway mark and the point where the end is in sight. Mile splits of 5:17 and 5:11 led Beardsley to think to himself,
“Well, I guess it’s going to stand for another year.” Then, at mile 19.5, things changed. 26-year-old Dominic Ondoro, a Kenya native based in Santa Fe, looked around and, as Beardsley describes it, seemed to say to himself, “It’s time.” “And then he took off, and it was like all the other guys were running backwards, back to Two Harbors,” Beardsley said. “It was a thing of beauty,” he continued. “I’ve watched a lot of people run over the years, but I’ve never seen anyone move so gracefully and with such perfect form.” From there, Ondoro would not clock a mile split over 4:50, hitting 4:39 for one. Beardsley’s color commentary quickly refocused from the question of who would win the race to whether Ondoro would break his 33-year-old record. He could tell it would be close. The final mile of the Grandma’s course takes runners around the Duluth Event and Convention Center, then turns them alongside the William A. Irvin, an iconic retired iron ore and coal freighter parked in the harbor, before sending runners into a U-turn into Canal Park for the finish. The lead car had to end its journey next to the Irvin, short of the finish. But Beardsley, determined to see the end, got out and tried to run alongside Ondoro as he made the last turn.
“I was trying to yell at him, tell him he could break the record,” Beardsley said. “I was in a dead sprint trying to keep up, but I couldn’t.” So he took a shortcut to the finish, just in time to hear the PA call that Ondoro had run 2:09:06, well under the record, and was among the first people through the crowd to congratulate him. Ondoro’s nearest competitor was nearly three minutes behind. Christopher Kipyego, of Zacatecas, Kenya, and Chapel Hill, North Carolina’s Betram Keter both ran 2:11:57, with Kipyego barely nabbing second place. Pasca Myers, a Kenya native based in Fort Dodge, Iowa, was similarly dominant in the women’s field, running 2:33:43 to beat runner-up Brianne Nelson, of Golden, Colorado, by 59 seconds. Sarah Kiptoo, of Santa Fe, was third in 2:34:55. In the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon, Julius Koskei, of Hebron, Kentucky, took the overall title in 1:03:36. Cynthia Limo of Lansing, Michigan, won the women’s race in 1:09:50. Though Duluth was not hosting a U.S. Championship, as it has in the past, the city was as lively as any year. “Duluth is like my second hometown,” Beardsley says. “They’ve always treated me so well there.”
As runners poured in and the fog began to lift that afternoon, Beardsley reflected on how long his record had stood. And what it meant now that it was broken. “I’ve always said records were made to be set, and they were made to be broken,” he said. “That’s why I wanted to get right through to congratulate [Ondoro] after he won. Luckily the race officials knew who I was and let me through.” The only downside to handing over his crown? “I just hope they invite me back next year,” he joked. “I know they will want [Ondoro] back to defend his title, so they’ll probably let me ride in the car at least one more time.”

Office Manager’s Report: Membership: New Members Renewals Membership Total

2013 55 167 (includes 53 two-year renewals) 2,258 (prior month: 2,369)
Race turnout at spring MDRA races has been great. Volunteers are still needed for the Mudball, Mom’s Day and Mississippi 10 Mile. RunMinnesota: The May/June issue is underway and will be out by approximately May 15th. Web/Twitter/Facebook: Heidi updates daily with announcements about our programs, races and other fun facts.
COMMITTEE REPORTS Advocacy: TC Running Coalition will meet on May 22nd. Nathan has applied to be in the bicycle pedestrian committee of Minneapolis. On this committee he would be able to promote MDRA and offer insight into areas that concern both runners and cyclists. Programs: Spring marathon training if going well. MDRA is running two women’s running camps, one in Edina, one in Maple Grove, they both have good numbers even if the weather isn’t cooperating. Gloria Jansen is leading a Beginning running class in White Bear Lake. Promotions: This committee met prior to the board meeting. The purpose of this committee is to identify and communicate MDRA to the community and promote membership. Race: An MDRA Trail Grand Prix Series was proposed. After much discussion six races were chosen for the series. As time is of the essence with the first race being in early May, Heidi will get a flyer together and post the races and info on the MDRA website as soon as possible. Cost would be $10.00 for the entire series. Entrants must be MDRA members. Scores will be tallied within each age division. Kevin Ross moved to approve this proposal. Eve Stein seconded, the new trail series was unanimously approved. Eve Stein will make a Facebook page to get the ball rolling. New Business: Kevin Ross suggested increasing the pricing of the Grand Prix Races to $10.00. Heidi had another idea to charge the races $100 per race to be part of the series as there is great demand to be involved. Heidi was in favor of keeping the price at $5 and using the race fee income to help pay for awards. The Grand Prix has a very strong number of over 140 runners for 2014. Old Business: Nathan Campeau inquired on registration for the City of Lakes half marathon. At this point it is just a bit ahead of last years pace.

JULY/AUGUST 2014
Office Manager’s Report: May is off to a good start. The on-line membership drive has begun. It was suggested that board members share on Twitter and Facebook, etc. Best of Twin Cities to be published soon listing MDRA as the best bargain for running. RunMinnesota: Work continues on the November/December issue of RunMN and will be published near Thanksgiving. The 2014 MDRA Annual Calendar will be available just before Thanksgiving and mailed to members in early December. Ad revenue is up for this year’s calendar.
COMMITTEE REPORTS Advocacy: The TC Running Coalition meeting may or may not take place. Nathan is staying on top of the trail improvements. Lebanon trail improvements have been delayed a year. Nathan is still waiting to hear back from the Bicycle Pedestrian Committee. Administration: Heidi mentioned the possibility of updating the MDRA mission statement. Would like input. Programs: Nathan reported that the spring marathon training class is pretty solid with a good turnout. The summer track program needs a new leader as Mike N is stepping down. Heidi is currently looking for coaches for the fall classes. Dave Marek and Eric Welle expressed an interest. Promotions: Mike N reported that the Promotions Committee was working on ideas for Grandma’s expo. Working on brand identity focusing on MDRA being the oldest and most diverse running club. Survey for membership renewal has been distributed. It was suggested that we invite an elite runner to be in the MDRA booth during the expo. Also discussed have Carrie Tollefson do an MDRA run. Race: The Trail Grand Prix series has 10 people registered so far. Of those 10, nine ran the Mudball. Good turnout for spring races overall. Mom’s Day 5k had 80 runners. The race committee will discuss the future of the Mom’s Day run since it can no longer be a timed race. USATF: Melissa will be attending the USATF meeting on Sunday, May 18th. Old Business: Heidi reported that the MDRA website is being updated and once complete the board member bios will be posted. Norm brought up the Work Plan for 2014. It was determined that all areas are being covered…website profiles, promotions, membership, revenue generation, balanced budget. Kevin inquired about charging other races $100 to participate in the Grand Prix.

JULY/AUGUST 2014
ccasionally, not necessarily following a day of complete rest, I can run. Really run. With an unwonted feeling of liveliness and energy, I go out to jog as usual, but my legs are different this time. I feel like running. I give in readily to the urge to run at more than a slow jog, and keep on going, running easily, pushing myself through a three mile run, not needing to slow down, finishing the last half mile hard and even sprinting to the end of the workout. The run gives me a nice physical and mental lift. For hours afterwards, I feel enlivened. To have workouts like this, as much as anything, I think, is why I run. Of course, I would not be able to run as I do on these delightful days were I not in some kind of shape. So, I slog through the great majority of runs. Not hating it, but not delighting in the effort, either, because of the prospect of a good day of running coming along every once in a while. Yes, running for the sheer joy of being rapidly and easily in motion is a good reason to run. I recall being in a room full of top flight runners, men and women, at a press conference prior to the USA One Mile Road Race Championship. For all the world, it seemed to me that I was in the presence of a gaggle of giddy teenagers in love. At that press conference, I happened to interview one of America’s top milers, Lopez Lomong, an Olympian in the 1500 meters, who told me one of his favorite workouts was running half a dozen repeat 600s on the track at 90 seconds each. He usually did this alone. Stunned, I asked how he managed without the encouragement of other runners to keep his pace. Wouldn’t the anaerobic pain slow him down? How would he even know that he was keeping pace? “I have my stop watch,” he said, re-
garding me with a happy, smiling face. “I go to the track with just my stop watch.” “Really?” I said. “Yes,” he said, smiling and nodding, “Just me and my stop watch.” ‘This man loves to run,’ I thought. Every runner knows the bubbling joy that comes with running well. Another good runner, Bruce Mortenson, one of the best in the country in his youth, told me of running 11 miles on an ocean beach, running right along, as he still could do, with the sound of the waves and the gulls, before the awesome immensity of the sea, saying of the memory, “Life doesn’t get any better than that.” Yet another outstanding runner, Garry Bjorklund, arguably the best the state has ever produced, told me of training with a cohort in Colorado. His voice a mixture of awe and determination, he said, “We pounded those roads like you wouldn’t believe.” He further related the time he came down from training at altitude and ran a short cross country race at sea level. “I felt as if I could run forever and never get tired,” he said, sounding like a man who had found a bit of Heaven on Earth. But even for the pedestrian runner, who never experiences running as akin to floating along on a stiff breeze, there can be days when running is a great joy. In this technological age, it’s instructive to keep in mind that we have brains and bodies designed millions of years ago. If you would understand human nature, think, first of all, in terms of the ape like creatures struggling to survive on the plains of Africa. Running, or some other form of vigorous physical activity, is natural to the human species, but especially running, for most people are built to run. The great transformation for humankind, coming some four million years ago, long before the large brain, was true bipedalism, the ability to walk upright. Apes can’t do this. When we could walk, we
also could run. Our early ancestors, the Australopithecines, could jog all day in pursuit of game. Now and then, it stands to reason, they would have run, too. It would be a waste of precious energy, however talented one of these creatures happened to be, for him or her to have run a lot for the sheer joy of it, but it must have happened. One can readily imagine an Australopithecine youth, who by nature could really run, carried along with the joy of chasing down some game animal. In some preconscious way, the mind knows what the body is capable of doing and urges the body to do it. I interviewed an Olympian, Phil Rogosheske, who said he joined the Army for the express purpose of training to make an Olympic team. What exalted ambition. But what was the sport to be? He could not run like an Olympian, or swim or high jump (though he had the state record at that). In these sports, which he pursued, he lacked an Olympic level of talent. How then could he be so sure that he would become an Olympian? At some level, he knew. It was just a matter of discovering the right sport. It turned out to be kayaking, in which sport he was one of the best in the country. My point is the unconscious mind urges the body to be active, to do what it can do, and running, of course, is fundamental. The urge to be physically active does not apply just to Olympians. Many years ago, I used to walk around one of the local lakes every day after work. And every day, I would encounter a man of about 50, in long pants, long, buttoned shirt and tennis shoes, running around the lake. He ran tirelessly and fast. What got him started? He knew he could run, so he ran, and running, he kept moving toward the talent he had.
All of living is governed by three rules: Rule 1. Stay alive (be careful) Rule 2. Procreate (be loving)
Rule 3. Grow (be more alive) Life is a balancing act, carried on largely out of the realm of consciousness, between love and fear. Love urges us on to engage the world in a million ways that are good for us and good for the population at large. Fear holds us in, narrows our perspective, so we pay attention to some source of danger. Rule 1 is paramount, so as to keep the game going. The mind will error on the side of fear causing a myriad of problems, if the fear is only imaginary, so as to protect its existence. To be physically moribund or to engage in self destructive behaviors is a violation of Rule 1. Running is an affirmation of it. By procreate in Rule 2, I mean in the broadest sense of the term. Be loving, be happy, be engaged in all those things which are good for a person, which lead to good health and fruitful relationships. Think again of our ancestors. Those who were more attractive, more physically vital, had a better chance of mating and also of having offspring who would carry on the genes. Most of these creatures could run many miles a day. The ones who kept up with the pack on hunting and gathering expeditions fared better than the ones who didn’t. Running, a natural way of being active, and with advantages for health and strength, must have been selected for in the species. By grow in Rule 3, I mean all the things we can do to get better. Be more conscious, more mentally and physically alive. There is in us an urge to move on, to improve at whatever we undertake. It is one of the noblest traits of human nature. When we run well, we feel more alive, our physical consciousness is stirred to the highest pitch and afterwards we feel satisfied. Our improvement encourages us to improve all the more. We naturally want to run a little better. Mere fitness will no longer do. There is a race to be run. And, next time, to run it faster still. So, it’s in us to stay in shape
In this technological age, it’s instructive to keep in mind that we have brains and bodies designed millions of years ago... Running, or some other form of vigorous physical activity, is natural to the human species, but especially running, for most people are built to run. and running is fundamental. I might put it this way. Some of us run, and some of us don’t run, but we are all runners by nature. All this being said, there are many reasons people give for running: health, fitness, competition, fun, staying young (I have known people in their 90s who are younger in body and mind than others in their 40s), keeping weight off. All of these are merely reasons to do what the mind wants the body to do in the first place. “First, be a good animal,” George Sheehan, the running guru, said. It is not just a prescription, but a natural urging of the mind. Health is a recurring theme, including everything from feeling better to staying alive. Running at the local health club, I’ve encountered a number of aging athletes plodding along on the upstairs track. After a greeting, one says something to the effect, “I’ve had a darn heart attack. My doctor has told me to get in shape. So I figured I’d better.” “You look good,” I say. “Don’t you feel better, too?” A grumbled response. A friend started power walking when a physical exam showed that she was developing osteoporosis. For an hour a day, often in a circle around the basement, she walks at a lusty four m.p.h. At a cross country race many years ago, I talked to a man who said he was there because no male ancestor on either side of his family had lived past 45. “I’m going to give the Grim Reaper a run for my life,” he said. I thought of reassuring him that he only had a risk factor. Live healthy and live long. But I didn’t. Let the battle continue. It’s good for him (This was 20 years ago. I wonder if he’s still alive. Chances are better if he’s still running.).
Another runner told me, “It’s been a life saver. I’d have been dead long ago had it not been for my running.” He was over 70. No one in his ancestry had lived past 50. Of course, one can start out running for health reasons and, finding one’s talent for the sport, gravitate into running for fun or even competition. Running is good for the mental as well as the physical health. Running and being happy go together. It must be so, for who but a happy person would put himself or herself freely into physical grief. I have long thought that the two happiest places on the planet among crowds of people are the front steps and sidewalk before a place of worship after a spirited service and the finish line area after a race. Running, of course, relieves stress and lifts the spirits. People feel better after a lively run. On my hardest days, because running is a part of my life, I know I will run, and running will lift my mood and sharpen my mind. Thoreau wrote, “No man can remain in a very dark mood when in the close company of Nature.” I would say the same of running. Would it not be a good psychiatric approach to get people in some mental distress physically active? As one runner with a family history of depression said to me, “Running is my pill.” People who don’t engage in physical activity are starving their psyches, as well as their bodies, for what they yearn by nature to do. Two further aspects of running should be addressed: competition and ego. Competitiveness is a part of human nature and has been so from the beginning. It’s easy to imagine an Australopithecine youth, thinking he was better than

his older sibling, determined to stay ahead of him on the hunt. It got to be a race, a flat out sprint, until one or the other, or both, dropped off. Believe me, I’ve had the experience on running workouts with a buddy. He had to finish ahead of me. Toward the end of the run, as I speeded up, he did, too. As I sprinted, so did he. We sprinted to the finish, and I always had to settle for him opening the door to the gym for me. Outstanding runners have a further reason for running. They respond to the call of their talent. Their minds know what they can do, and they determine to get to the bottom of it. The goals they set and the training they undergo set them apart from other runners. Consider two runners: women Olympians, a marathoner and a middle distance runner. What a joy it must be to run as they do. But at what a price. I could understand the six to eight mile morning run, even in the dead of winter. But to

run again that day, perhaps four to six miles in the afternoon cold of a wintry day, day after day. These people are of a different order, mentally, as well as physically. One of the Olympians, Carrie Tollefson, said she ran late in her pregnancy, in a tank of water suspended on a treadmill, till the day she went to the hospital. The other Olympian, Janis Klecker, in peak condition, would run 16 miles on a treadmill, alternately at 5:40 and 5:20 a mile pace. This is a different dimension of athletic performance. What is it like to be among the best in the world? We cannot fathom. Anyone who says ego is not a part of the urge to run is mistaken. I can do this is a universal cry of the human heart. The first time I hiked down into the Grand Canyon, near the river, seven miles down the trail, I came upon a small fellow plodding along past me uphill. Not far behind him was a slight woman following him up to the rim, 5,000 feet above. They were probably running rim to rim,

a favorite undertaking of the very fit and highly gifted endurance athlete. I have heard of rim to rim to rim on the same day. On another trip, I stopped in Death Valley, not far from the lowest point, Badwater Basin, when I happened to see what looked like a ghost drifting across the Valley floor on the highway. I could tell it was a woman, draped in white from head to foot, and ahead of her, in shorts and singlet, was a small man. The temperature was 110°F. Perhaps they were in training for the Badwater Ultramarathon. It is a trait among the gifted to take any endeavor to the extreme limits. A peculiar kind of running to extremes is the streak runner. Whatever compels a person to run every day without fail for upwards of 20 or 25 years is quite beyond me. It strikes me as discipline to the point of a fine madness. But one could not do what they do were one not happy in the endeavor.
These days, I’ve been running as hard as I can go, which amounts to one and a half hard runs a week. The others easy in preparation for the Get In Gear 10K. I want to see how far up among the old codgers in my age category I can get. The hardest run every week is on a treadmill, when I try to push myself to the limit of what I can do. In terms of satisfaction, it seems to me, the limit does not matter. Lopez Lomong runs 6 x 600s at 90 seconds each. Janis Klecker ran 16 miles, alternately at 5:40 and 5:20 a mile. Carter Holmes ran 16 x 400s at 62 seconds. Pat runs 6 x 1 miles at 7.0 to 8.0 m.p.h. The issue is not the limit, but going to the limit. Using common sense to avoid injury or collapse, there is nothing as intensely satisfying as running hard, so afterwards you can truly say, “I could have done no more,” and then to sit in a hot tub, delightfully exhausted. Running. It is in our nature.
