PATRICK O’REGAN Patrick O’Regan is a runner and freelance business writer. He is a graduate of St. Thomas College and the University of Minnesota. Born and raised in Montgomery, Minnesota, Pat currently resides in Inver Grove Heights. He runs eight to 10 races a year, mostly 5Ks and 10Ks, with two marathons to his credit. He has also “competed” in three National Championships.
FARRAH STEWART Farrah Stewart is a Performance Dietitian for EXOS at the new Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Center in downtown Minneapolis. As a former Division I scholarship athlete and record holder in women’s track and cross country, Farrah currently maintains a competitive running regimen and enjoys helping others achieve their health, wellness and performance goals.
ANN NOSER Ann M. Noser began running in high school, but hated it. To be quite honest, she called it, “hell in a bucket.” It wasn’t until college that she came to depend on it for relaxation and sanitypromotion. She now runs mostly trails in Rochester, Minnesota, and also works as a veterinarian and writes in her “spare” time. Her first book, How to Date Dead Guys, was released July 2014.

My first item this issue is to offer my sincere thanks to all ten or twelve of you who have kindly commented on my bi-monthly letters to our greater running community. I recently commented to one of my loyal dozen readers that my “style” of writing is not very formal, nor professional; but it is genuine and honest. I am aware it may not appeal to all and must be endured by some, but hey, we’re an endurance bunch at best, so push on through. By now Grandma’s is in the rearview mirror. That was my favorite marathon for several reasons. My mother’s side is all from Duluth, and I spent many a summer vacation at Grammie’s house, exploring Chester Creek. Grandma’s was my also my first marathon. Didn’t know a thing about properly training. Just knew to run a lot and was buoyed by some earlier success in the spring. Ended up running a good race and was hooked. Tried many strategies in subsequent races, one of the oddest being, I would wake up early race morning in Minneapolis and drive up to catch one of the last buses out of Duluth. Recall my first marathon bus to the start, and hardly a word was spoken. The enormity of driving that course, and the shear distance we were about to run, sunk into all passengers, and by Two Harbors, no one was speaking. Dead silence. I vividly recall a cloudy drive until cresting the hill over the Duluth harbor, beautiful sun filled entrance, highlighted by Neil Young’s song, “Cortez” (…he came dancing across the water…). The sight of the sun on the water and the sound of Neil’s guitar will always stay with me. I think it is very true for all of us; so many times events come together, the universe provides and life ensues. And running can encapsulate many of our peak experiences. It doesn’t have to be a marathon, or a race, for that matter. Anyone who’s trained can recall a really good training session, group run or even a season of training for a key race. Our sport is one that you cannot cheat at. You don’t put the miles in, you don’t get the results out. Very few short cuts.
JULY/AUGUST 2015
My discovery about running was reading George Sheehan’s books and walking away with the quote, “We are all an experiment of one.” Ultimately you cannot follow Galloway’s or the latest online “Personal Trainer.” You can be doing everything right, but the day of your key race it rains, a shoelace breaks, someone steps on your shoe at the start. Emerson said, “Events are in the saddle that ride mankind.” Stuff happens, so we must learn to anticipate that we will be surprised, prepared as best we can and punch back when adversity shows itself. That is how we succeed in our running and our little time on this earth. So a hearty toast to all readers who succeeded so far this summer! Skol! Keep training, running and living! Soon, we’ll have the opportunity for the August MDRA Como Relays (every Wednesday, Como and Lexington, Saint Paul), MDRA 15K (August 16) and then the wonderful MDRA Victory Races (September 7) and the Jeff Winter City of Lakes Half (September 13). See you there! I urge you all to have a wonderful summer season. Get out and enjoy, and watch for those times when everything comes together and bliss is upon you. May it happen to you all! Enjoy every run.
“Success means having the courage, the determination, and the will to become the person you believe you were meant to be.”

REMEMBRANCES BY PATRICK O’REGAN
Roy Griak 1924-2015 I only knew Coach Griak a little. But it was enough to be captivated by him. Stranger or friend, athlete or administrator, everybody got the Coach’s undivided attention. A friend introduced me to him as he sailed past in the hall. I thought, “So this is the great coach I’ve heard so much about.” With his soft smile, pleasant remarks and close attention, he already made me feel I mattered to him. Many years later, at a ceremony honoring him for 50 years of service to the University, he said to the large audience, “This isn’t about me. It’s about you.” He meant it. I never met a man more focused on others. Roy coached a pantheon of the best athletes from this area. To mention a few: Bjorklund, Timm, Hoag, Heinonen, Stuart, Page, Bryant, Anderson, Backes and so on. But the lesser lights of the team had his attention, too. Because he wanted his charges to grow as human beings, as much as athletes. He wanted outstanding citizens, as well as competitors. Athletes know when coaches care, and they will respond. Coach Griak brought out the best in the athletes he coached. His record of accomplishments is testimony to the fact: from 1963 to 1996, his time as head coach of the cross country and track teams, he coached three national champions, 47 All-Americans and 60 Big Ten champions. His teams won the Big Ten titles in 1964 and 1969. His 1968 cross country team was fourth in the NCAA. His track team won the 1969 Big Ten. He rose to the top of his profession, coaching for both the Olympic and Pan Am teams. Coach Griak’s personal accolades are many: Drake Relays Coaches Hall of Fame, University of Minnesota “M” Club Hall of Fame, U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He was given the honor of having the Roy Griak Invitational Cross Country Meet, one of the biggest cross country meets in the area, named after him. A statement by Athletic Director Norwood Teague sums up Roy’s contribution to the University: “Roy went to Minnesota, coached here for more than 30 years, worked here for more than 50 years and impacted more lives than almost anybody in the history of the athletic department.”
Gary Wilson, long time Gopher track and field and cross country coach, paying tribute to Roy in a 2013 story in the Pioneer Press, said, “It’s very comforting to have Roy around. He always has the answer. He has influenced more people than I or anyone else ever will. Roy is one in a trillion.” Current track and field and cross country coach, Steve Plasencia, quoted in the Pioneer Press, said of Roy, “His devotion to the University of Minnesota touched immeasurable lives, and he will be sorely missed by each and every one of them.” No less than the accolades, the memories of Coach Roy Griak are a measure of the man. Countless people feel fortunate to have known this great coach. Even those who knew him only a little are blessed by the acquaintance. Our condolences to his family.

RUNNING P OETRY
Fade Together BY NATHAN LECKBAND Running the dirt-packed path, hopping over the small stream, looking to the backwaters where the waterfowl float on the burning water lit by the rising sun Thoughts fading to the same path in the snow-the crunch of snowshoes, the sound of their aluminum frames snapping up and down with the rhythm of my steps. Fades into the path through the suburban trees where I stopped my steps to see a coyote standing in the path staring back at me. Reminds me of the gravel road outside Lake Bemidji when first one, then two dogs chased me away from their farmhouses. My heart’s beating fast, so I slow it down by remembering the run looking down on the Mississippi where the northern ice floated to melt downstream. .

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT BY KEVIN ROSS
PAUL MICHAELSON
This month’s featured runner is Paul Michaelson, a 55 year old Edina resident working in software sales and an MDRA member since 2010. Paul has participated in many MDRA training programs, most recently helping out as a pace leader for the spring group. Many MDRA members will recognize him as one-half of “The Paul’s,” a seemingly inseparable duo, shown here running the 2012 Grandma’s Marathon. This year, Paul has his sights on a Boston qualifying time at Grandma’s Marathon. When did you start running and why? I started running right before I turned 50. I was hoping to beat my sister-in-law in a 5K race.
Why would you recommend MDRA to a friend? It’s great to be a part of a running community. Long distances go by faster/easier with friends.
What is your motivation for running? Running gets me outside where I can experience every season.
What is your favorite season for running and why? My favorite season is winter. I like to bundle up and battle the elements.
What do you consider to be your favorite race/distance? The marathon is my favorite distance. What is your best memory from a race? Running the Disney Princess Half Marathon in 2013 with my daughter, Lyndsay, is my best memory (is there any other race where you can be comfortable running in a tutu?). And you can’t beat a Disney parking lot at 3:30 in the morning. Do you participate in MDRA training programs or races? If so, describe your experience. I’ve been a part of the spring and fall training classes for the past four years. I’ve learned a lot about running, and I’ve met a lot of great people in the process. What is your shoe of choice? Mizuno Wave Rider. What is your favorite quote? “You must do the things that you think you cannot do.” —Eleanor Roosevelt
6
What are your interests outside of running? I enjoy golf and traveling.
JULY/AUGUST 2015
What does a typical week of training consist of for you? Five to six days of running. I typically run downtown, so I’ve got a couple of different runs I’ll do. My favorite run is a hilly, eight mile loop on River Road that we call, “The Beater.” What are your favorite pre-race and post-race meals? Pre-race meal is the wild rice burger at Betty’s Pies; the post-race meal is the vegan pasta at Pizza Luce. If you’d like to be featured in our Member Spotlight, contact Heidi at runminnesota@gmail.com.
NUTRITION
Optimizing Nutrition for a Great Race Day BY FARRAH STEWART, MS, RD, CSSD, LDN
Sample Intake Guide Night prior: 6:00 p.m.: 6 ounces grilled sirloin steak + side salad + baked potato (with reduced-fat cheese in place of butter and/or sour cream) 9:00 p.m.: 8 to 16 ounces low fat chocolate milk 10:00 p.m.: bed Race morning: 2 to 3 hours prior to race: half bagel + peanut butter + 1 banana + 16 to 20 ounces water 1 hour prior to race: 10 to 16 ounces Gatorade/Powerade
B
eing a Minneapolis runner, there is an eager awareness of the Twin Cities Marathon that is quickly approaching. While planning miles of training, perhaps you are left wondering how to ensure you have a great race by optimizing nutrition. Best advice: experiment during training, not on race day. There is little worse than trying something new right before your big event.
Rule #1: Stick with the familiar It is a rookie mistake to try something new the night before or on race day. Blood flow to the stomach is reduced due to increased excitement and anxiety of the big event, so sticking with familiar food your body is accustomed to is wise.
Rule #2: No need to “carb load” Carb loading (the practice of increasing dietary carbohydrate intake in the days preceding a race) is a common ritual for many runners. However, it’s seldom neces-
sary. Research has shown that carbohydrate loading has no effect on performances in races lasting less than 90 minutes and a negligible effect in longer events when adequate carbohydrate (such as gels, Gatorade, sports chews, etc.) is consumed during the race. Even six-time Ironman winner Dave Scott has never carb loaded. While you want to ensure you have an adequate supply on hand, going overboard on carbohydrates in days preceding the race will only leave you feeling heavy and bloated. Yes, you absolutely need carbs, but the over-consumption of them prior to race day to have a peak performance is a common error. Instead, ensure a consistent, balanced intake of roughly 55 to 60 percent carbohydrates, 15 to 20 percent protein and 20 to 30 percent fat per day. That being said, if loading up on carbohydrates the night prior the race is a social ritual among friends and gives you the confidence you need to compete your best, then go ahead and enjoy your complete race experience.
During race: 5K: water stop if needed 10K: water or 6 to 8 ounces Gatorade/Powerade after 30 minutes, if longer than 45 minutes to complete Half and full marathon: carbohydrate source (Gatorade/Powerade/sports gels/etc.) approximately every 30 to 45 minutes (Again, stick with familiarity and tolerance. There is nothing worse than having an upset stomach mid-race after months of quality training.) Post race: Time to celebrate! If you are not worried about your recovery and just want to bask in your accomplishment, you have every right to do so. However, there are smart ways to fortify yourself post-race in order to get your brain and body to bounce back quickly. Aim for 20 to 30 grams of protein plus 60 to 90 grams of carbohydrates (depending upon the length of your race) within 30 minutes of finishing. Some ideas: 16 ounces low-fat chocolate milk and apple dipped in peanut butter Beef jerky, granola bar, Gatorade Whole grain bagel, plus two to three boiled eggs Good luck to all! Run Happy, Fuel Smart.

RACE STORIES
A Tale of Two Races BY ANN NOSER
I’ve run Zumbro twice.
sludge. My shoes gain five pounds each during the first mile.
Let me rephrase that. I ran Zumbro this year. Last April I slipped, slid and limped for 17 soggy, frozen miles.
A woman in pink glances down at my feet and gasps. “You don’t even have trail runners.”
Since crossing the finish line twice makes me an expert (yeah, right), here’s a compare and contrast of my two vastly different experiences—and a cautionary tale of the dangers of being unprepared.
Take One: April 2014 Weather: steady downpour, hail, thunder, temps in the wet 40s Zumbro Bottoms. We pull into the parking lot—and it hails. We reach the check-in and the runner next in line bails. I turn to my racing partner. “Are they going to cancel the race? I’ve never run in hail before.” She shrugs. The pre-race meeting leader shouts through a bullhorn: “If you have any extra layers in your car, put them on now. These are the worst conditions ever.” Translation: You’re gonna die. Crap. I wore shorts. (Minnesotans in April are really optimistic.) We shiver at the starting line, then crawl at a snail’s pace up a mountain of

JULY/AUGUST 2015
“What are trail runners?” I ask. (Ignorance is not bliss, let me assure you.) She attempts a fake smile of reassurance. “Don’t worry. You’ll be fine.” Then she disappears. Man, it’s cold. I miss my pants. We struggle uphill. The views from the top are amazing, or at least they would be if everything wasn’t so grey and wet. We scramble up and skid down Zumbro Bottom’s own muddy slip ’n slide. My running partner is in Heaven. She’s a mixed-breed—part human, part goat and part ballerina— gracefully dancing across slippery, mud-encrusted rocks.
We slog onwards until mile 10. Hunger hits me—but I’m afraid of eating. Brief history: my gastrointestinal tract hates me. I’ve always known where every potty stop (both plumbed and wilderness-style) resides on each run. I never used to eat before a run. Not short runs. Not long runs. Not even a marathon. So I didn’t eat anything before Zumbro. Nor during. (Not the best idea.) After mile 10, my IT band starts singing like an untuned violin. For 20 years, every time my IT band twangs, I cringe in fear. How bad is this going to hurt? How long will I not be able to run afterwards? Now that I’m crippled, I force my goat-friend on ahead without me. I’ll be fine. Are you sure? she asks.
Then there’s me—a pure-bred klutz-turned-tree-hugger, clinging to branches for dear life as I slither down, stubbing my toes on the boulders hidden beneath the leafy muck.
After she disappears into the woods, things get weird.
I’m gonna die. I’m really gonna die.
It’s so cold. I shiver uncontrollably as I plod forward. Can’t stop shaking.
Absolutely, I assure her. (Translation: I’m gonna die, but don’t let that stop you.)
Wait a minute. Am I on the right route? Am I lost? I don’t see anyone.
of ice within. Hours later, a yoga class helps my stilted circulation return to normal.
Can’t get warm. How much longer?
Aftermath
The constant zings from my IT band slow me to a hobble by the time I reach gravel.
Of course, my crazy friend loved running Zumbro, keeps talking about it and can’t wait to sign up again.
I scream the first time a bike jangles by on my left. A truck approaches, and I consider jumping on—without even asking. But I’m not a quitter. Keep going. Oh, look! There’s a bridge. That’s supposed to mean something, right? A rest stop. Oh, thank goodness. And there’s my wonderful, patient running partner waiting by the fire—and about to send the rescue squad for me. Desperate, but still too scared to eat, my teeth chatter as I demolish two orange slices. The last three miles reunited with my running partner are a blur. All I can remember is the spike of pain radiating up my left leg with each step. “I feel so weird,” I confess to a stranger running next to us. He has a walking stick in hand and a bulky pack on his back. He offers me a couple unidentified white capsules, saying: “You need these more than me.” “What are they?” I ask. “Salt.” “Salt? You’re supposed to eat salt?” (Yes. And wear trail shoes. And dress appropriately for the weather. And eat breakfast…) I swallow, with only a minute portion of my brain concerned I could be ingesting a hallucinogen. Not that I can feel any worse… Minutes later, the mental fog lifts and I feel better. Not fabulous, of course, because there’s an invisible knife stuck in my IT band, and I’ve never been colder in my life, but I can hold an intelligent conversation again. (Perhaps consisting of mostly swear words.)
My initial response: No-no-no-nono. Four or five months later: Okay, but only because I’m an idiot.
Take Two: April 2015 Weather: recent snow and rain, temps start in 30s expected to reach upper 50s My race goals: To get as close to four hours as humanly possible, and not get hypothermic, hyponatremic and stupid in the head At the starting line, with clearing skies above me, I turn to my two running partners with one final question: “Should I have ditched this jacket?”
Lessons Learned 2014: Self-diagnosed hypothermia, hyponatremia, IT band flare up, twisted ankle, self-induced delirium (aka “bonking”) 1) Dress for the weather, not the date 2) Eat before, during and after the race 3) Unidentified capsules might save your mind 4) Running friends are the best friends ever 5) Trail shoes, baby
2015: Sunburn, mild dehydration, expected post-race aches and pains 1) Dress for the current race, not the past one 2) Wear sunscreen 3) Quit being a weenie, and carry your own blasted water 4) Conquer your fear
Too late. The race is on! Fifteen minutes later, off slips the jacket—followed shortly by the long-sleeved shirt. Left with a short-sleeved t-shirt and long pants, I begin to melt like butter. This time I ate breakfast, after taking a year to train my stomach to eat and run. My feet sport Brooks Cascadia. And I’ve been working the PT, yoga, Pilates, resistance band, foam roller—you name it—in an attempt to tame my unruly IT band. I am ready. And I am melting. Dang, why’d I have to wear my hottest pants ever? This time, my shoes don’t get caked with mud. I don’t passionately embrace every tree on my way down each hill. I forge onwards, eating at each stop, tensing as we reach the 10 mile mark, waiting for my IT band to start screaming. But it is silent.
And thirsty. Can’t drink enough. Why didn’t I bring my annoying waist water pack? Why am I too cheap to purchase an expensive water carrying system that doesn’t bug the piss out of me? So hot. Panting. I tuck my shirt uber-sexily under my sports bra in hopes of a breeze. Each time I feel the moving air, I turn towards it with a welcoming smile. Miles pass. I brace myself, waiting for the pain that doesn’t appear. Still no pain when I reach the gravel. Keep sweating and shuffling along. I greet each biker as they pass by. (Without screaming this time.) Consider kissing bridge when I reach it, knowing precious water is close at hand. A very concerned, handsome volunteer fills both of my eager hands with water cups, which I drain greedily before setting off.
At long last (“long last” meaning 5:07:06), the finish line!
I warily keep going, dreaming of asking for scissors at the next rest stop to cut my pants into shorts, even though they are my favorite…
I can do this. Let’s go. Okay, that’s still a walk. All right, up to a shuffle.
I toss my shoes, change my clothes and shiver all the way home. A boiling shower doesn’t thaw me. Warm food and drink can’t melt the core
Ugh. It’s so hot Satan called and wants his weather back… and he can have it—along with these hateful pants.
The last three miles of trails are really lovely, but unfamiliar. I realize that I totally spaced through them the year before, because I don’t
recognize a thing, which is kind of scary. Like the evil witch, I’m melting. Man, I hate these pants. Glancing at my watch, I calculate and recalculate the possibility that I might finish in under four hours, which would be awesome. Once I reach the clearing, the open field looks as long as a football field. When did it get so big? I cross the finish line at 3:59:31.29. That’s right, “As close to four hours as humanly possible.” How’s that for an accurate prediction? Yes, I aim to please. Aftermath Instead of shivering for hours, my neck and face are as red as a vneck shirt-wearing lobster. I spend the next two days sticky with aloe vera. Will I run Zumbro again? Yes! I love this course, the other runners and the beautiful, wonderful volunteers. Plus, it’s not every day a person can cut over an hour off their race time, right?

BOOK REVIEW
The Essential Sheehan BY CHAD AUSTIN
I
’m always amazed at how much is written about our simple sport of running. Websites dedicated to the sport are updated daily, there are multiple magazines that come out every month and new books are published yearly. Not to mention blogs, tweets and other social media outlets for the sport. Topics cover a wide range: advice on training and nutrition, race results, shoe and gear guides and so on. Often these topics are split even further: high school runners, elites, masters, trail runners, etc. There’s definitely no shortage of written material on the sport. However, for the last 20 years or so, one topic has been missing. When Dr. George Sheehan died in 1993, he took with him his unique approach to writing about the sport. Part philosopher, part poet, Sheehan spent much of his free time studying classical literature and thinking about how those writings pertained to his running. What emerged was a wide range of topics and a writing style that led David Willey, the Editorin-Chief of Runner’s World magazine, to call Sheehan, “the magazine’s most popular and beloved writer.” Sheehan’s words appeared in the magazine from 1970 until the time of his death. They also appear in eight books that he wrote over the years.

Actually, there are nine books now, if you count The Essential Sheehan. Published in 2013, it is a collection from his previous books as well as his Runner’s World articles throughout the years. Even though I was already familiar with some of Sheehan’s work, I picked up a copy of The Essential Sheehan and found it incredibly captivating. As I read along, it occurred to me that there’s a whole generation, or two, of runners that have never been exposed to Sheehan’s writings. Sure, they’re probably aware of the latest training theories, the best post-run recovery food, the newest shoes on the market and
the best running apps available. But it’s likely these generations are still struggling to answer the question runners get asked a lot: “Why do you run?” This is where Sheehan comes in. As Willey says, “No one has ever done more to explain, simply, eloquently and honestly, the how and the why of living a running life.” More than a review of The Essential Sheehan, this article is intended to be an introduction to a whole new side of the sport, a side that hopefully won’t be skipped by generations to come. Let’s begin with a little background on the man himself. Sheehan was a competitive miler in
“My experience has taught me that you must first and always seek the person you are. And this becoming unfolds through the intensity with which you use your body, through your absorption in play, and through the acceptance of the discipline needed to be an athlete… You are your only friend. The only protector of your body and its beauty. The only defender of your play and its delights. The only guardian of your childhood and its dreams. The only dramatist and actor in your unique, never-to-berepeated living of your life.” - George Sheehan
college, but then, like so many others, life got in the way. As he puts it, “I was placed on a train, the shades drawn, my life’s course and destination already determined.” He started a family. Make that a big family. One that included 12 kids. He also became a successful cardiologist. But he claims he was playing a role, rather than being the person he was meant to be. Then at 44, bored with medicine, he decided to become a miler again. In his book, he states, “And, in an absolute, unreasonable, single-minded dedication to this absurd project, he discovered his body, his play, his vision, and, eventually, a new life.” These are the themes that appear in many of his early writings, urging readers to find their body, discover their play and become the person they are meant to be. The only dramatist and actor in your unique, never-tobe-repeated living of your life.” After 35 years of running, perhaps the fact I’m most proud of is that I’ve never exercised a day in
my life. As the saying goes, “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” The same applies to exercise. I’ve known all along that I don’t consider running to be exercise, but it’s one of those things that are hard to put into words. Sheehan knows exactly how I feel. Once he started running again, he made his “first and greatest discovery. Running is play.” But Sheehan was smart enough to know that although running is good for everyone, running is not right for everyone. And he encouraged people to find their own form of play. “The truth is that play is where we live. In running and climbing and swimming, in hunting and fishing, in riding horses and playing games we become ourselves and open ourselves to experience. There, we find an inward calm and peace. There, thinking and feeling have a clarity that occurs almost nowhere else. And there, we discover a wholeness, a completion, and an integrity that make us want to celebrate our being.” Obviously, if you’re reading this article, there’s a very good chance that you’ve already discovered that running is your play also. This is important, because as Sheehan states, “There is one question…that holds the answer to every successful lifelong fitness program: ‘Are you having fun?’” If the answer is yes, you are already ahead of the game. Speaking of success, that’s another theme that appears through-
out many of Sheehan’s writings. Although he became the first person over 50 years old to break five minutes in the mile, and he ran a 3:01 marathon at age 61, that’s not why he considered himself successful. He was more concerned with how he rose to each challenge and whether or not he lived his own life. “Success is not something that can be measured or worn on a watch or hung on the wall. It is not the esteem of colleagues, or the admiration of the community, or the appreciation of patients. Success is the certain knowledge that you have become yourself, the person you were meant to be from all time. That should be reward enough.” Given that Sheehan enjoyed studying classic literature, it’s probably no surprise that some of his writings lump runners in with topics from those classics: poets, saints and children. One of my favorite excerpts reminds us to stay in the present. “Given the choice, most of us would give up the reality of today for the memory of yesterday or the fantasy of tomorrow. We desire to live anywhere but in the present… But for those active in mind and heart and body, the child and the poet, the saint and the athlete, the time is always now. They are eternally present. And present with intensity and participation and commitment… No athlete ever lived, or saint or poet for that matter, who was content with what he did yesterday, or would even
bother thinking about it. Their pure concern is the present.” When it comes to excuses, not having enough time is always near the top of the list. Things were no different for Sheehan 30 years ago. His take on the topic is still perfect for inspiring us to be better people, especially when it comes to how we use our time. “Our happiness depends upon how we use our time. Yet how many of us put things off, living for a future when we will have more time? How many of us live on the allotted 24 hours a day? How many are waiting for a new day with more time? As Arnold Bennett writes, ‘We shall never have any more time. We have and we always had all the time there is.’” According to Sheehan, Robert Frost never read a novel because he was too busy living his own life. Like Frost, Sheehan wanted to be part of the action, saying, “I do not want to be a spectator… How many hours can you watch TV without hearing a remark clever and witty and insightful enough to repeat, much less treasure?...Thus I reduce those hours in which I am a consumer and a spectator and increase the time when I am living my own life.” Sheehan’s writings continuously remind me to use my time more wisely, to stop being a spectator, to continue the process of finding myself and becoming the person I was meant to be in this “unique, never-to-be-repeated life.” If you’re looking for another typical running book about how to run faster, this is not it. However, if you’re interested in running at a much deeper level, I can’t recommend The Essential Sheehan enough. As you can imagine, the topics discussed here are just the tip of the iceberg. Pick up a copy today and find out why the New York Times says, “Dr. Sheehan probably has been quoted more often by more runners and writers than any individual associated with the sport.”

THE FINEST RACE BY BRUCE BROTHERS
If you are a distance runner, no marathon is finer than Grandma’s. Of course, the experiences of running the major marathons in the Twin Cities or Boston or New York City or London or Honolulu are uniquely worthwhile and unforgettable. Equally so are marathons in South Dakota, Wisconsin, Texas and just about any place where a 26.2 mile course can be mapped out. But Grandma’s stands alone for its scenic rolling terrain and its big time vibe in a small town setting. I might be biased, of course. I ran my personal best at Grandma’s nearly 35 years ago, became an annual entrant in the days when it was selling out quickly, forked over $100.00 to become a “lifetime participant” when the race organization was temporarily seeking an influx of cash and later covered the race numerous times for Twin Cities newspapers. Not only did my PR come in Duluth, but I also ran what might have been my personal worst there, celebrating the 30 year anniversary of that PR. I was under-prepared and unable to beat the six hour cutoff. I borrowed a poncho at the start to help fend off an early rain and later ambled along by myself near the back of the pack. Nevertheless, I had a terrific time.
After all, it was Grandma’s! About the only thing that matches the picturesque Lake Superior setting is the history and tradition of an event that has always celebrated running with the kind of party such an effort deserves, where runners of all abilities, shapes and sizes happily mingle on Canal Park. I remember introducing myself to former Olympian Ran Daws after my first Grandma’s in 1980 (and later becoming good friends with him). I remember goading race co-founder Scott Keenan to bend the rules when running friends failed to enter before the limit was filled (but he strictly adhered to the rules, while also remaining user-friendly throughout his 37 year tenure.). I remember choking up when Carlyle Sherstad, the founder and longtime race director of the Syttende Mai Race in Grantsburg, Wisconsin, flagged me down from a corner on Superior Street near the 25 mile mark one year (Carlyle was in a wheelchair following a stroke.). I remember grinning when I passed Sue Olsen jogging into the woods to pee one year when she was running while eight and a half months pregnant, enabling me to finish in front of her for perhaps the only time in my career (she named her son, born nine days later, John Miles Olsen.). I remember getting misty when former women’s record-holder Lorraine Moller delivered her typically heartfelt and emotional prerace talk at the marathon expo (Lorraine was a bronze medalist at the Barcelona Olympics.).

GRANDMA’S 15 About the only thing that matches the picturesque Lake Superior setting is the history and tradition of an event that has always celebrated running with the kind of party such an effort deserves, where runners of all abilities, shapes and sizes happily mingle on Canal Park.
I remember running along the North Shore during an ultramarathon, hours passing as I listened to George Fink spin tales about the early days of Grandma’s (George was one of the North Shore Striders, along with Scott, that launched Grandma’s in 1977.). I remember so much, from monitoring the famous Dick BeardsleyGarry Bjorklund duel via radio reports from well behind the duo in 1981 to Duluth News-Tribune writer Kevin Pates falling off the tailgate of an accelerating media vehicle when the race began and getting biked by a cyclist back to his perch. I remember Lemon Drop Hill when it was big and bad and the Lemon Drop Restaurant still existed. I remember enjoying the scenic downhill under the railroad trestle south of Knife River. I remember reaching the bridge over the Lester River and being welcomed like everyone else by hundreds of enthusiastic onlookers. Other marathons have history and tradition, of course, and like Grandma’s, they deliver the sheer joy of accomplishing something significant. Other marathons have prerace fun runs, post race parties and finishing stretches lined with supporters. Other races have humble beginnings when only 150 or so participants showed up as well as big-league announcers like Peter Graves and hightest prerace speakers like Bjorklund, Beardsley, Moller. But Grandma’s has all that plus an icy lake to cool your legs and ice cream to cool your core temperature at the finish. It has a local newspaper that treats this event like the Super Bowl, plus a Duluth populace that embraces a humongous influx of healthy-minded people. It has character as well as characters. I remember hall of famer John Naslund talking about running the first race, because it started in his hometown of Two Harbors, and running every single Grandma’s since. And I remember Jim Kirkham cruising to a nearly three hour finish in more than 30 Grandma’s, then hitting the dance floor proudly allowing his finisher’s medal to match his moves for an hour or two after each race. I remember difficult times and good ones at Grandma’s. Although I missed it this time around while recovering from foot surgery, and although I already have a few marathon finisher t-shirts, I can hardly wait to go back to Duluth for another Grandma’s. As Beardsley told Pates for a prerace story this year: “Grandma’s is my favorite race in the whole world.” Hard to argue with that.

Treasurer’s Report:
Secretary’s Report: Minutes of the Board of Director’s Meeting for April 13, 2015 were submitted and approved by Kevin Ross, seconded by Scott Welle.
• Favorable income for month of March.
We didn’t have a quorum at the May meeting so minutes were not taken.
• Memberships have picked up.
Treasurer’s Report:
• Race income for the month of March surpassed the budget by about $1,600 due largely to the early race receipts for the Jeff Winter City of Lakes Half Marathon.
• Income for the month of May was under the budgeted amount by roughly 19%.
• Revenue from Ads remains favorable year to date.
• Revenue from Ads continues to shine for May and 2015 year to date.
Office Manager’s Report:
• Year to date net income is currently unfavorable by $2,600. This is a result of very strong revenue from Ads and strong/early Race Registrations.

RunMinnesota will hbe out mid-May. Volunteers for all MDRA races are very much appreciated.
• Membership revenue for May was the primary driver for our revenue variance.

2014 37 73 2,278
2015 11 68 (includes 18 two-year renewals) 2,164 (prior month: 2,193)
With our membership slipping we are looking for run groups to do promotions with.
COMMITTEE REPORTS Advocacy: Sam Rush reported on the Bloomington River Bottom project. The objective is to keep the trails natural. DNR is proposing paved. Minneapolis Park Board will be repaving the William Berry Parkway with asphalt. Nathan Campeau presented the “help plan” for the Future of Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet in the Chain of Lakes Regional Park. More than $3 million in improvements will be made to this area. Applications are being accepted for volunteers to serve on the community advisory committee (CAC). All can be involved in this project by attending meetings, open houses, on line and email communication. A draft of a written master plan for the public will be posted in early December 2015. By 2016 approximately $3.5 million will be available for improvements at Lake Calhoun and lake Harriet. Club Administration: No report Programs: Rochelle Christensen reported the MDRA Spring Marathon Training Class is going great. Over 100 are registered for the class. The majority of runners in the program are running Grandma’s Marathon. Sheila Becker one of the coaches of The MDRA Women’s Camp reported the camp has 24 registered, a great variety of runners and good balance. Gloria Jansen and Kelly Keeler are coaching a 5K running clinic in White Bear Lake.
The next issue of RunMinnesota will be out in late July. John Cramer needs weekly volunteer’s for the Como Park Relays every Wednesday night in August. Help is especially needed at 5:30. Facebook page is going well.
COMMITTEE REPORTS Advocacy: Nathan Campeau reported the Lake Calhoun project will be developing this summer. Sam Rush brought the board up to date with the Save the River Bottom Project. State representative Ann Lenczewski from Bloomington has added a provision to a bonding bill that will require the DNR to make the river trail a paved trail between the Bloomington Ferry Bridge and the Cedar Avenue Bridge. Additional information is on the Save the River Bottom Facebook page. We would like this to stay a natural trail. Club Administration: Kristen Bruner has resigned from the board as she has recently moved to Georgia. The board will be appointing a replacement for the rest of her term. Promotions: A promoted MDRA run is set up with Mill City Running for June 10th. At Grandma’s Marathon Expo booth Fitsoks will be given when a member renews or joins.
Promotions: A promotions meeting was held before tonight’s board meeting. Chairman Dave Marek reported different ideas were explored to promote MDRA. Ideas were to contact different running clubs and offer $20.00 for a 1 year MDRA membership. Running clothing and shoe drives would get our name out there. For our booth at Grandma’s MDRA water bottles and bumper stickers will be handed out. Dave Marek welcomes any promotional ideas.
A programs committee meeting will be held before next months board meeting at 6:15
Publications: The May issue of RunMinnesota will be out mid May
Race: Positive receipts have been received for race equipment.
Race: Spring races have been well attended.
A race committee meeting will be held at 6:15 before next months board meeting to discuss the Jeff Winter City of Lakes Half Marathon and other fall races.

RUNNING INSIGHTS
A Marathon in My Head BY DIC STOKKE
28
Stood by the side And watched them run. Now, I told myself That would be fun!
Now we start and So does the pain! Both legs are hurt, I’ve gone insane!
Check on the schedule And did pick one. Stood in with the crowd awaiting the gun.
Stumbled into a Runner’s behind. Fell on someone. She was unkind!
I’d trained for A solid three days, Fully know that Preparation pays!
EMT’s come running And I think I’m dead. I’ve quite forgotten This run’s in my head.
