MAY/JUNE 2015

Is it a Good Day? Have you had your daily dose of outdoors, exercise and endorphins? If not, what’s holding you back? Family? Work? Injury? I recall when I was deep into training and also in the midst of a young family. Once I was getting pressure to skip a run for a common, everyday family commitment. I had the crazy notion to tell my wife, “Look, you’ve lived with me when I’m injured and I can’t run. Not pretty. So don’t pressure me not to run, or I’ll treat the pressure as an injury and react accordingly.” It is amazing how the power of such a great thing like running can overpower our better judgments: what Lincoln called “the better angels of our nature.” And yet, that is what running can become: what used to be called a positive addiction. We now “know” there is nothing positive about any addictive behavior, but that term was used during one of the running booms, where so many were discovering all the positive behaviors that went with the running lifestyle (and substituting running for some well-known negative behaviors). It made perfect sense. Running can definitely get under your skin. And the high season is upon us. The miles of cloudy, snowy, ice covered pathways are so distant. As we slop on our sunscreen, we now complain about the humidity and heat. I missed the MDRA Lake Johanna 4 Mile for the first time in thirty years (work commitment), only to be greeted by emails from board members suggesting I be banned from the race, for I brought cold weather. Ha! I was able to volunteer for the next four MDRA Spring Races (MDRA 7 Mile, Ron Daws 25K, Fred Kurz 10 Mile and Mudball 4 Mile), and we had wonderful weather. I even got to meet more of my loyal dozen readers (I think I’m up to 11 now. One more holdout somewhere). Big thanks go out to our own members, who give so much of their time and talent to help further the sport for all, the MDRA Program Coaches (we have over 100 participants in the MDRA Spring Marathon Training Program) and our great race volunteers. And also big thanks to those brave souls who volunteer to serve on the MDRA Board. I realize the prestige and style points for serving with such an august group can be awe-inspiring at times.

Yet, even with all those benefits, plus the pay and retirement package (there is neither, folks), MDRA has managed to survive and thrive for 54 years. Considering we have one paid employee (Thanks for putting up with us Heidi.), I think we are doing pretty well. We have our struggles, we’re perpetually looking for more membership and a balanced budget, but we’re also consistently putting on great programs and races, maintaining our reputation and developing runners committed to the sport, the lifestyle and the running community. Finally, Big Thanks to our Community Partners like the Cross of Glory Church in Hopkins for allowing us use of their Gym for the 7 Mile and Ron Daws races (a 25 plus year partnership) and to the Linden Hills Great Harvest Bread Store for the donation of the Race Cookies and Buns (another relationship that goes back over 20 plus years, through multiple Great Harvest owners and MDRA Boards). I happened to be putting equipment back in my car after the Ron Daws race and noticed a racer who had went out for more miles after the 25K. She looked done in. We talked a bit, and I said how sorry I was, having just dumped the water, but I could offer her a couple Race Cookies. I cannot adequately express the supreme joy on her face. “No, REALLY? Two? OMG. Thank You.” Thank you, Great Harvest. Good people are everywhere. We just need to find each other and continue supporting the good we do. So lace up those shoes, do some light stretches and burn down the course. Enjoy every run.

FROM YOU Dear Editor, The article in the March/April 2015 issue entitled “Building Your Nutrition Base” rightly emphasizes nutrition as the foundation for our running training and racing. However, I found its use of the term “performance-degrading” to characterize dietary saturated fat as out of step with current scientific evidence on nutrition. At submaximal exercise intensities, much of the exercise science research shows enhanced fat burning and endurance after periods of consuming a high-fat diet. For example, a 1994 study among cyclists found that despite a lower muscle glycogen content, those consuming a high-fat diet (70 percent fat, 7 percent carbohydrate) were able to sustain moderate intensity exercise until exhaustion lasting almost twice as long as those on a high carbohydrate diet (74 percent carbohydrate, 12 percent fat). [1] More recent research by well-known exercise physiologists Volek, Noakes, and Phinney reinforces these earlier findings with more evidence to support the use of dietary fat as a fuel for endurance exercise. [2] One specific sub-set of saturated fat, medium chain triglycerides, is also a readily used fuel by the body that can result in greater energy expenditure. As such, they are being used in weight loss interventions [3] and have been shown in previous research to enhance endurance. [4] Beyond athletic performance, recent research also challenges previously held notions that saturated fat is health-degrading as well. A 2010 review found that “there is no significant evidence for concluding that dietary saturated fat is associated with increased risk of CHD (coronary heart disease) or CVD (cardiovascular disease).” [5] A 2014 study reinforced this finding and further cautioned about the potential adverse health outcomes from replacing dietary saturated fat with dietary carbohydrates. [6] As we learn more and more about diet and human performance, we should continue to reassess our firmly held beliefs on the matter, and continue to let science guide our approaches.

Let us know what you think. Contact Heidi at runminnesota@gmail.com.

RUNNING P OETRY

Footprints In The Snow BY DENNY DANIELS Well before the rising sun, I arose to start my daily run. I walked out the door, And was shocked to see, All was flocked--the lawns, the trees. Overnight, spring snow had fallen. It looked like winter had befallen. Everything was clean and white. Everything was snowy bright. Even in that gauzy light. Entranced by the beauty, I ran far that day. Off my path, and far astray. Just how far I couldn’t say. But so far I feared, I’d lost my way. Everything looked different Covered in fresh snow. Where I was I did not know. All was quiet, nary a sound. Close to panic I looked around. But then I saw, there on the ground, A sight that got my heart to pound: My fresh footprints in the snow. I’d follow them back to where I’d started. Back to the point I’d first departed. A blessing on me that God had bestowed: Those life-saving footprints in the snow.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT BY KEVIN ROSS

ANNE SAWYER BEACH

This month’s featured member is Anne Sawyer Beach, a 32 year old teacher and MDRA member since 2010. This spring brings a new challenge for Anne, an experienced marathoner, as she incorporates “expectant mother” into her training regimen. When did you start running and why? I started running after I graduated from college. Because I had always been a hockey and tennis athlete, after I made my way into the “real world,” I realized I missed the team sports and the regular exercise that sports had always provided me. I was a first year teacher and coach, and when I would be done with my workday, I realized I wanted to do something healthy and energizing for myself. Running was something I could do anywhere, anytime, and all I had to do was go. I started out by running only a mile or two and then realized I could go further. It was addicting. I ran my first 10 mile after a month. What is your motivation for running? I’m motivated to run to stay in shape, to challenge myself, to keep myself busy, but most of all in the recent years, I’ve enjoyed the motivation I get by joining a group run. I also think running is a great time to think and recharge. What do you consider to be your favorite race/distance? I love marathons because of the challenge, and I’m a sucker for the Twin Cities Marathon with all the local support and energy, but I also love the 10 mile distance. My favorite 10 mile is the Goldy’s Run where you get big hill challenges and you finish in TCF Bank Stadium. What is your best memory from a race? So many awesome race memories. I think my favorite was running the Frankfurt Marathon while I was living abroad. I was really trying to get one more “sub four” marathon time, and sure enough, I crossed the finish line at 4:00:31. It made me realize how crazy this sport can be. If I had just run a bit faster when I was stopping for water or rounding a corner. But it also is a great memory because it made me realize that I just love the run and race, more so than the time.

Do you participate in MDRA training programs or races? If so, describe your experience. Yes. I have done the spring and summer training programs for the last five years, and I love it. It’s been a great help to have guidance from coaches and fellow runners, to have water support along the long runs and to have a plan for each training period. Most of all, I love it because training with other runners becomes a great bonding experience, and it keeps me disciplined. What is your favorite quote? “Great moments are born from great opportunities” – Herb Brooks What is your next race and what is your goal for the race? I’m not sure when the next big race will be for me. I’m planning to run while pregnant this spring and see what happens. I’m planning to try some 5 and 10Ks this spring which will be a new challenge. Hopefully by the fall I can get back into shape and aim for a half marathon. What is your favorite season for running and why? I like the spring for running, because it’s when I switch from winter hockey season to running. It gives me a sense of renewal and change. It’s an exciting time, and it’s also not too humid. Why would you recommend MDRA to a friend? I would absolutely recommend MDRA to friends. It was recommended to me by a friend, and I’m so glad I joined. The support you can get from other runners, coaches and on the courses is outstanding. If you’d like to be featured in our Member Spotlight, contact Heidi at runminnesota@gmail.com.

TRAINING

Ditch the GPS Three Reasons You Should Learn to Run by Feel BY CRAIG MOSCETTI, MPH

Beep. Beep. Beep. Like an inconvenient alarm clock, the Garmin® heart rate monitor watch on your wrist alerts you that you are now out of your target heart rate zone. As if conditioned, you ease up. Moments later, the familiar beep sounds once again. And, as you’ve done each previous time, you slow your pace to ensure it complies with your pre-set zones. Technology now commands a greater presence in our daily lives and our training than ever before. The “quantified self ” movement is in full swing. An athlete now has the power to collect huge amounts of data to track every detail of his or her health and performance: heart rate, speed, distance, heart rate variability, sleep, nutrition, calories burned, water intake, steps, power, cadence. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Individualized blood testing is a whole different ball game. The roughly $5 billion market for personalized data from so-called “wearables” is growing fast. There are now some 50,000 health applications available. Now, I’m not going to argue many of these don’t serve a valuable purpose or that many find huge benefits in using them. There’s a time and place for using technology. It can provide helpful, real-time feedback to help us tailor our daily habits or improve our training. But are we too reliant on them? In the case of running, does our GPS watch or heart rate monitor entirely control our training? Does technology command so much control that it’s stripped away some of the fundamental reasons we started running in the first place?

8

MAY/JUNE 2015

After an adolescent life consumed with soccer, including playing for a division I university, I became a runner. I didn’t start running because I knew anything about heart rate training or VO2 max. I ran by feel. In fact, I didn’t purchase my first heart rate monitor until five years later. I could’ve spent a couple hundred bucks for a new GPS watch and heart rate monitor. But I didn’t. I used an old school sports watch that only displayed elapsed time. My “GPS” was to use Google Earth to measure the distance of specific segments I ran. It was a conscious choice to run-by-feel for so many years, in particular my first few years in the sport. Here are three reasons I didn’t use a GPS/heart rate monitor and still don’t for 75 percent of my training today.

REASONS TO RUN-BY-FEEL

1. Perceived Effort is a More Accurate Feedback Measure Countless studies show that aerobic capacity (known as VO2 max) correlates with an individual’s rating of perceived exertion (RPE). In other words, by understanding how hard running a specific distance and pace feels, we can assess our capabilities of running further or harder. Heart rate or GPS also isn’t useful with some types of training, such as speed intervals. For example, if I’m doing 200 or 400 meter intervals, there is a short lag time between when you start the interval and when heart rate begins to rise. In some

cases, you won’t reach your target heart rate until the end of the interval or even after the interval is over. Regardless of the science though, I think understanding what a specific intensity feels like is the best foundation for any runner. Before I bought my first GPS/heart rate monitor, I already knew what a 6:00 per mile pace felt like versus a 6:30 pace. We are all masters of our own bodies, our own n=1 experiment, and with a more intimate understanding of how mine felt, I could better assess my capabilities.

2. Technology Can Create an Arbitrary Mental Ceiling When we force ourselves to run within certain limits dictated by technology, do we ever realize what our true limits are? There are huge benefits to training with a GPS and heart rate monitor in some instances. For example, sixtime IRONMAN World Champion Mark Allen famously adhered to the Maffetone 180-minus-your-age method for training and racing. Heart rate can also be an essential tool for aerobic base training or ultra-distance events. But, in the case of shorter races, or even up to a marathon, technology can prove to be more of a mental barrier than an enhancer. This is why many professional runners and triathletes forgo more technology for less, like a regular sports watch, or none at all.

3. Running Without Any Technology is Liberating and Enjoyable Instead of constantly worrying about pacing or heart rate, look around and appreciate the beauty around you. Minnesota has some of the most picturesque running scenery in the country. Sometimes it’s beautiful to walk out the front door and go for a run, with no direction and no plan for where you’re going. Your

only goal is to explore, and do it in a way we all love, by running. After all, the majority of us mortals don’t run for a paycheck. We do it because we love it.

CHART

Ratings of Perceived Effort

How to Train Using Perceived Effort If you hope to train using perceived effort, the most common, validated method is the Borg’s Ratings of Perceived Effort, or RPE (see Figure). It ranges from 6 to 20, with 6 being “no exertion” and 20 being “complete max effort.” Use different numbers and ranges within the scale to structure different types of workouts. For example, a recovery run would use a RPE around 9 to 11. Short, 100 to 200 meter intervals would use a much higher RPE, around 18 to 19. I use RPE quite often with athletes who I coach that don’t have access to a heart rate monitor or GPS. I’ve found it can be just as effective, whether you’re training for a 5K or an IRONMAN.

The Ultimate Run-by-Feel Workouts Every runner should have this workout in his or her toolbox: the fartlek. Meaning “speed play,” this session is all based on feel. You modulate intensity and the duration of those intensities by whatever your body dictates. Some intervals might be short and punchy, while others are longer, tempo-like efforts lasting a couple minutes. My other favorite run-by-feel workouts are time trials. Use a track or a segment of road or trail that you know the exact distance. Then you can use a variety of different tests to gauge your fitness, whether by time or distance, such as 10 minutes all out, or 3x1 mile repeats. Or a longer variation, my go-to main set before I ran my first sub-three hour marathon was: 3x25 minutes with five minute recovery between sets. So, the next time you head out for a run, consider leaving your GPS or heart rate monitor behind. It might be the liberation you need to become a better runner.

NUTRITION

Nutrition for “D”-lightful Running BY FARRAH STEWART, MS, RD, CSSD, LDN

E

very year it is the same. Winter is a damper to the sole (pun intended) and challenges our commitment to the sport we love. Then we spring forward in time, the snow begins to melt and we welcome the seasonal allergies for knowing our best running days are yet ahead. With rising temperatures and sunshine, we runners get anxious with anticipation of what we can make out of our racing season this year. Does running outside in the sunshine offer benefits to indoor training? Absolutely. It is no coincidence that you may feel happier, healthier and faster from runs in the sun versus treadmill and elliptical training. Vitamin D, the vitamin we produce in our skins as a response to direct sunlight, is a known key component not only in mental stimulation and bone health, but in running performance as well. Studies have shown that runners who are vitamin D deficient have weaker performances than those who aren’t. By playing a vital role in protein and hormone synthesis, immune and inflammatory response and cell turnover and regeneration, this fat-soluble vitamin becomes a necessity for all aspiring runners.

Are you getting enough?

3 ounces Salmon 447 IU per serving 1 cup Mushrooms 400 IU per serving 3 ounces Tuna 154 IU per serving 1 cup Fortified Orange Juice 137 IU per serving 1 cup Fortified Milk (including Soy, Almond and Lactose-Free) 120 IU per serving 1 cup Fortified Yogurts 80 IU per serving 1 cup Fortified Cereals 50 IU per serving 1 large Egg 50 IU per serving 1 ounce Cheeses 10 IU per serving How to make sure you get Vitamin D in your day? Swap your coffee creamer for milk, have some low-fat string cheese as a snack, toss a few mushrooms in your salad, sandwich, wrap or burger (see recipe below) at lunch, recover with low-fat chocolate milk post-workout, grill salmon for dinner and/or opt for Greek yogurt if craving a bedtime snack. Or simply ensure to get 20 to 25 minutes per day of sunlight for your 100 percent Recommended Daily Allowance. So get outside and Run Minnesota.

It is recommended we obtain 600 to 800 IU of Vitamin D daily. Following is a list of foods containing Vitamin D.

S P E C I A LT Y RU N N I N G S TO R E S

Your Best Resource for Everything Running BY CANDY PATRIN Remember back when you started to run, and the first advice you received was to buy a good pair of running shoes? Not the kind you can pick up at just any shoe or discount store? The advice was probably very specific, such as, “Go to a running store and get fitted by someone who knows what they are doing.” It all seemed a little like mumbo jumbo back then. After all, you should know whether a shoe fits, right? Fast forward to the present. After years of running, you have a greater appreciation for not only that first shoe fitting, but also all the good advice you have received at your favorite running store. In fact, your local running store is probably near the top of the list of resources that you go back to again and again. Whether you need new shoes, gear or information on injury prevention or training, the guidance that can be found at local running stores, either from staff or other customers, is invaluable and most likely better than any magazine or book you will read. MDRA members have another advantage when it comes to running stores. A good number of Minnesota running stores offer merchandise discounts of 10 to 30 percent to MDRA members. In a world of mega

stores and online shopping, where did these locally owned running stores come from, and what sets them apart from other retail options? Here’s a snap shot look at a few of those local stores.

GEAR Running Store GEAR Running Store opened for business over 30 years ago and is located in the 44th and France neighborhood of Edina, less than a mile from the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes. Owner Paul Horan took over the store in 2009. When he noticed a decline in the store’s inventory, Horan, a former member of the GEAR running team, asked if the store was being sold. The rest is history. Horan says that today the family owned and operated store carries 10 times the inventory it once did. GEAR offers video gait analysis, preferably when the weather is nice enough to run outside. The store will also periodically host professionals onsite, such as a physical therapist, to be available to customers who wish to address specific issues, learn about injury prevention, etc. GEAR is known for its hosted runs in the spring through fall running seasons. The group events range from a couple of loops around Lake Harriet to a run from Brit’s Pub in Minneapolis, which is followed by a free beer. Information about the GEAR hosted runs, and more, is posted on its website (www.gearrunningstore.com), Facebook page, where Horan notes they have over 7,000 followers, Twitter and Pinterest.

Gear West Gear West Cross Country Ski & Run, independent of GEAR Running Store, opened its doors in 1991 when Jan Guenther moved to Minnesota and founded the store with her husband. The fledgling store’s 800 square foot facility was tiny compared to today’s 11,000 square foot store in Long Lake. According to Guenther, an athlete who excels in Nordic skiing and triathlon sports, some things have remained the same, including excellent customer service and competitive pricing. Gear West is growing once again into a new store that opened this spring. There are two Gear West locations under Guenther’s ownership: Gear West Cross Country Ski & Run, which offers everything an active family needs for those sports, and Gear West Adrenaline, which focuses on quality clothing, alpine and team sporting goods. A third Gear West store, which Guenther refers to as a “sister” store, was purchased by an employee and caters to triathletes. One of the hallmarks of Gear West is its hosted events and community support, details of which can be found on its website (www.gearwest.com), Facebook and email. There are weekly runs in the summer on a trail that starts near the store, followed by post run waffles. For those runners who cross train and compete in winter sports, Guenther notes that Gear West is the largest single cross country ski store in the United States and will ship within the U.S. and Canada.

“It’s just fun to be part of the community.” - Zac Schendel, Marathon Sports

Marathon Sports Run/Walk Marathon Sports Run/Walk, a.k.a. Steve Hoag’s Marathon Sports, has been at its 50th and Penn Avenue location in Minneapolis since 1985. An offshoot of the Garry Bjorklund Sports stores from way back, John Long bought the store in 2005 from Hoag, after initially being partners. Zachary Schendel joined the staff in 2006 and now serves as its General Manager. Hoag, Long and Schendel all have impressive running credentials. The store hosts group runs on Tuesday nights. Runners can learn more about these and other activities on its website (www.marathonrunwalk.com), Facebook, Twitter or via email newsletter. As part of its commitment to the local community, Marathon Sports Run/Walk welcomes runners to use a changing room at the store, bathroom facility and even keep their things in a secure locker while on a run during business hours. “It’s just fun to be part of the community,” says Schendel. Marathon Sports Run/Walk offers customized foot assessment and shoe fitting for customers whether they are runners or walkers. In addition, physicians Dr. Paul Langer DPM (TCO) and Dr. Chris Leisz DO (Sister Kenny) offer their consulting services onsite. Their schedules can be found on the store’s website.

Mill City Running Mill City Running is a relative newcomer to the Twin Cities and a welcomed addition for those runners who live and train in the Northeast/downtown Minneapolis area. After a decade of working in other running specialty stores where they first met, Jeff and Bekah Metz-

dorff opened their store in July 2013. “We are both avid runners who enjoy the competitive and social aspects of the sport,” says Jeff. Since opening its doors, Mill City Running has increased attendance at the regularly scheduled runs, which include a beginner’s only group run, an all comers/beer run, “runch” (a run over the lunch hour) and Flapjack Friday run. The store’s website (www.millcityrunning), Facebook and Twitter accounts offer details about the various events that take place throughout the year. As noted by Jeff, “From the Stone Arch Bridge, to the river bottoms, to the vibrant neighborhoods in the Northeast Arts District and North Loop, you can get a little bit of everything within a few miles.” The store also offers an in-depth shoe fitting process with video gait analysis, and last year the Minneapolis Star Tribune named Mill City Running the Best Running “Style House.” Besides carrying popular running brands, the store offers some brands known more for active fashion, such as Oiselle and Lolë®.

Run N Fun Run N Fun got its start from humble beginnings. Owners Perry and Kari Bach opened their first store in the fall of 1991 after scraping together some cash from sources that included the sale of about $5,000 worth of baseball cards. The Bachs saw an opportunity to offer services to females and high school and college athletes. They purchased a trailer and delivered directly to schools for track and cross country. “We met, trained together, married, started a store together and have adult children that compete,” says Perry. In addition to its St. Paul location, Run N Fun operates a store in Minneapolis and recently sold its Burnsville store to Kelly Mortenson, an 18year employee. According to Mortenson, the store, RunMn, will continue its local approach to customer service and offer the same MDRA discounts. The new website, www.RunMN.com, is in transition. The St. Paul Run N Fun store hosts Tuesday night runs. And the popular Thursday night runs from the Minneapolis location started up again in March. Information about upcoming events can be found on the website (rnfun.com), Facebook and Twitter. An in-store treadmill allows staff to access customers’ gaits year around. Their experienced staff, which includes the patient and helpful Mary Hiatt, who has been with the Bachs since 1993, is committed to putting customers in the best shoe for their needs, which may not necessarily be the most expensive pair notes Perry.

“We support the average person to be well, fit and move.” - Monica Holden, StartLine Running Store

StartLine Running Store StartLine Running Store opened its doors for business in 1998 in the western suburb of Minnetonka. Monica Holden, owner, manager and multi-sport athlete, says that she saw a need to offer a larger selection of women’s running gear and apparel. Holden’s experienced staff understands the needs of athletes, from beginner walkers to runners to ultra competitors. “My goal has always been to make everyone comfortable in a running store,” says Holden. The store hosts social runs most weeks that Holden describes as “casual, fun and very social.” Typically these events will include food, beverages and promotions. In addition, shoe vendors will bring in a selection

“Every runner is different in the amount of things needed to be done to fit them in the best shoes.” - Kurt Decker, TC Running Company

Outside of the metro area, there are plenty of good options to choose from as well. Austin-Jarrow Austin-Jarrow is tagged as Duluth’s original running store. The store, named after Jarrow Wahman and Bill Austin, is one of the longest standing stores in Minnesota, opening on Leap Day, February 29, 1984. They sponsor the Northwoods Minnesota and Wisconsin racing team that has been a fixture on the USATF team circuit for years.

EnduRUNce Shop EnduRUNce Shop in St. Cloud has recently relocated on the same street as the iconic Red Carpet Bar and House of Pizza in St. Cloud. They call themselves Central Minnesota’s premier running and walking store. Check out their website for group run information and other store activities.

of new shoes for runners to take on a three to six mile trial run. Information about upcoming runs and other promotions can be found on the store’s website, www.startlinerunning.com, or on Facebook. You may also see the StartLine name associated with local races, community events, health fairs and other wellness venues. “We support the average person to be well, fit and move,” says Holden. “It’s not about winning the race. It’s getting to the ‘StartLine.’”

TC Running Company TC Running Company has been at its Eden Prairie location for eight years and will celebrate its second anniversary in Maple Grove in July. Owner Adam Lindahl bought his first store, formerly a Run N Fun location, from Perry and Kari Bach. Regular TC Running customers are most likely to know General Manager Kurt Decker, who has 20 years experience working in running specialty stores. TC Running hosts events during the year, such as group trail runs, ladies night and the endless summer trail run series. Marlee Meshbesher is an on-staff coach who organizes the run club groups, including the runs and training. Runners can find out about upcoming events from the store’s website (tcrunningco.com), Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and its email newsletter. Decker takes pride in the store’s comprehensive merchandise selection as well as its experienced staff, some of whom you might recognize. The TC Running approach to gait analysis starts with looking at each person’s foot, including the shape and basic movements. From there, staff will suggest a couple of options and watch the customer run in the shoes, either outside or on the treadmill. “Every runner is different in the amount of things needed to be done to fit them in the best shoes,” says Decker.

New Openings Excelsior Running Excelsior Running opened March 9 just off of the main drag in Excelsior. The store is located a half block off of Water Street at 400 Second Street. Owned by long time running coach Derek Lindstrom, they have a unique flavor that goes with being in a “lake” town. Their tag line is, “Run the X.” They currently offer Thursday night group runs from 4 to 8 miles and plan to add Tuesday night track workouts soon.

River Valley Running River Valley Running, located at 1849 Adams Street in Mankato, opened in early February. Now, Mankato area runners have their own specialty running store. River Valley Running, recently opened by Mankato State standout runner Kurt Keiser, is ready to serve the southwest Minnesota region. With Kurt’s years of experience as a New Balance Rep and exposure to the running world, you can be sure to find a knowledgeable staff and quality gear. There is a group run from the store on Mondays at 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. For a complete listing of locally owned running stores that give discounts to MDRA members please go to www.runmdra.org (click on the resources link).

ON THE RUN

Better than OK The Real Minimalism BY SCOTT PARKER Runners, put down your gadgets and step away from the Internet. Don’t worry. You’ll be OK for an hour without it. Excuse me for saying so, but I think early in 2015, more than ever, we can use a reminder that the only technology running requires is what you’re born with. Maybe you put on a pair of shoes and, if you’re in Minnesota as I am, layer up to protect against the cold. But that’s about it. I offer this reminder after reading in a recent issue of Runner’s World that 96 percent of runners now use electronic technology of some kind. That number sounds high to me. And it’s not merely a case of no one I know voting for Nixon. In fact, many, even most, of my friends do run with headphones and various other cords connecting things with buttons to press and beeps to attend to and so on. It’s not even that when I run by the lakes near my home many more than four percent of runners I cross paths with appear without electronic augmentation. It’s that Runner’s World speaks for and to the running lifestyle more than the running experience. On every one of its pages, Runner’s World sells aspirations to runnerconsumers. This is a hallmark of capitalism: to take a basic human activity and turn it into something that requires regular and sometimes significant expenditures. For a media outlet like Runner’s World, this mood helps to ensure advertising revenue. But for the reader, it normalizes the inadequacy of self that perpetual con-

14

sumerism requires; you are not OK unless you buy X, download Y, wear Z and then, please, go on to promote it all on social media. Even when Runner’s World strikes a more low-tech tone, it finds a way to promote spending. Another recent issue read, “All it takes is a good pair of shoes and some wicking apparel to join our community.” It doesn’t sound like much, but already this is deeply exaggerated. I grew up running in Portland, rain capital of the running imagination, and I never once had wicking apparel for running, nor do I know what wicking apparel is. I wore shorts and a cotton t-shirt just like every other runner I knew. To this day I swear by the shirt and shorts that are closest at hand. To be fair to Runner’s World, I came across these claims, because I like the magazine enough to subscribe to it. My concern is not so much with them as with the implications of the culture they attest to. By way of contrast, let me tell you about my run around Cedar Lake. It begins by tracing the northernmost finger of Lake of the Isles, the lake between where I live, and Cedar. In the early summer, there are yellow goslings there. Now, it is winter and the lake is frozen and covered in snow. But if you listen you will still hear birds. As I leave Lake of the Isles, I pass an elementary school, a restaurant and a neighborhood bookstore I stop in sometimes. From there I turn onto a paved trail

MAY/JUNE 2015

that follows an old train line. Crossing the Kenilworth Lagoon, where the kayakers have been replaced by cross country skiers, this trail leads me to Cedar Lake. Here, I follow a paved trail removed from traffic along the lakeside. I see fisherman and canoes in the summer. I pass cyclists and other runners. I see cardinals, turtles, crows, loons and sometimes deer. But it’s for the east side of the lake that I run this lake so frequently. I turn off the paved lane and into the woods. Often I’ll see other runners or walkers here, and fishermen. Just as often I’ll be alone. At one particular spot, I regularly pass through clouds of marijuana smoke and hear the sounds of teenage laughter. Once I saw a band filming a music video here, all the equipment brought in by bicycle. But mostly what I see is the light. The way it glitters of the green leaves of summer. The way it slides in sideways on me in the winter. There is as much variety to the light and color as I care to notice. And the less distracted and preoccupied I am, the more I am able to. Once I complete the lake, I retrace my route through the Kenwood neighborhood and around Lake of the Isles and home. And here’s the part I think matters: not ever have I said to myself, “That was nice. Now, if only I had had earbuds instead of birds and the rustling of tree leaves for my soundtrack.” Or, “Too bad the quantifiable details of my run won’t automatically be tweeted out to all of my followers.” Or, “I hope when I stopped in the milkweed to give the

lake breeze a clear shot at my forehead and feel the waning autumn sun on my chest, it didn’t disrupt the negative splits I wanted to achieve.” I could go on, but what this comes down to is a question of what running is for. Is it to improve speed? Is it to lose weight? Is it to prove oneself to others? It’s possible, of course, to run for any of these reasons. And maybe fancy electronics can help with them. What I want to add is that it’s possible to run for other reasons. It’s possible to want to engage with running subjectively rather than to reduce it to objective measurements of miles, pace and calories. It’s possible to attend to the experience of running—the freedom, the beauty and the difficulty—rather than distract oneself from it with music and phones and data and all the rest. It’s possible to interact consciously with your environment instead of isolating yourself from it. And it’s possible that bringing your attention to your subjective experience of your environment is worthwhile. I won’t say it’s the only way to run, but I will encourage you, if not every time at least some of the time, to leave your digital life behind and step out into the world alone with your thoughts and impressions. It might be scary at first, but if you can give yourself a chance you’ll find that it’s possible to be OK with only the technology you were born with. Maybe better than OK.

New board members, Sheila Becker, Rochelle Christensen, Amber Garry, Jenny Harrington and Craig Moscetti were welcomed Treasurer’s Report: IThe proposed budget for 2015 is based off how income or expenses came in during 2014. Currently total budget and total expenses are unfavorable against the January budget. MDRA Marathon Class income has been favorable for January. RunMinnesota will hopefully be in the mail by March 10th. It is the largest issue of the year both in content and ads. Polar Bear Runs have been going great, are well attended and will continue through the end of February.

COMMITTEE REPORTS Advocacy: This committee, chaired by Nathan Campeau, responds to the needs of the local running community. Member feedback advocates how we respond. New ideas are welcome as to how we can be effective. Club Administration: There is one open position on the board. Candidates will be presented and voted on at the next meeting. Programs: Kevin Ross chairs this committee and will be scheduling a meeting. Raising fees and the coach’s training manual will be discussed. Polar Bears are Saturday morning winter runs. These runs are free, unsupported and alternating between Minneapolis and St. Paul locations. This year has had excellent attendance. The Spring Marathon Training Program will start Saturday morning, March 7 at the Calhoun Executive Center. Promotions: Dave Marek will chair this committee. Publications: March issue of RunMinnesota will be one of our larger magazines. Kevin Ross continues to write the MDRA member spotlight feature. This has been well received, he always looking for MDRA members to feature. Race: There will be a race committee meeting at 6 pm on March 9th. Races and race budget will be discussed. USATF: A new MDRA representative is needed. USATF will be meeting March 15, May 17, Aug 9, Sept 20, and Nov 8. New Business: This is a working board, with a work plan, and membership is discussed at every meeting. Old Business: The work plan should be updated and discussed at every meeting. Any new ideas should be presented to Heidi.

*Overall net income is down. * Rent at ECC is going up by $6/month. We are now being charged for room rental. * New insurance policy will be an added expense for 2015. * Training revenue appears to be down during March due to many early class members taking advantage of the early sign up discount offered in January. Club Administration: Norm Champ appointed Sam Rush to the MDRA Board filling the one year vacant term that the Past President normally holds. Promotions: Next meeting is April 13th at 6 pm. Publications: The March issue of RunMinnesota is the biggest of the year. It will include many national ads as well as the shoe review. RUNNING INSIGHTS

Rooted in Spring BY BRUCE BROTHERS

T

his time of year brings runners some of the coolest things: shedding hats and gloves, additional daylight hours, drier running paths and race calendars dotted with favorite events. For me, this spring delivered another seemingly annual occurrence: a visit to the doctor for an MRI. The MRI is typically the doc’s closing argument on whether surgery is required. Even two or three are way too many of these, because surgery might represent the nastiest prognosis for any runner. On the other hand, after the gloom of upcoming mandatory time away from your favorite pair of running shoes settles, a clearing head can remind us all that surgery also carries optimism and hope. Whatever has been hurting can, in theory, be fixed. Then, too, there is the accompanying contemplation. It cannot be overrated. Time can be used wisely. After you witness runners and events, your eagerness to join them only increases. Time away also offers a nice chance to read about your favorite pastime. I recently finished the outstanding March/April RunMinnesota article about inspirational former Gophers All-American runner Steve Hoag. It reminded me of just how deep my running roots go. Hoag and people such as Ron Daws, Bill Rodgers, Lorraine Moller, Sue Olsen, Barney Klecker and countless others never hesitated to offer help, advice and encouragement to also-rans like me. When I think back on more than 35 years of running, many of my favorite memories center on conversations and/or runs with folks when there was nary a stopwatch in sight. I loved most of the races, of course, but those times alone or with others on the asphalt or lake paths or snow-covered terrain were what got me there. Over a recent long, leisurely lunch, old buddy Richard Rix and I shared stories about those solo and group runs that prodded us to our fastest times in long-ago races. Almost in unison, we excitedly chimed in about the joy we each typically derived from those 18 or 20 mile training runs. I hate to put a finger on how long it has been since I logged a lengthy training run, mostly thanks to this foot injury – or that one. Nevertheless, I’m sure there will be another 20 miler down the road, surgery notwithstanding. In the meantime, I’ll not only take part in the shorter and occasionally uncomfortable runs close to home, but I’ll continue to remind myself about the Steve Hoags and Richard Rixes I have crossed paths with and how fortunate I have been to do so. This sport has put me in contact with talented runners and slow ones, shoe store owners and employees, race workers and volunteers, organizers and Olympians, characters and pretenders. And, of course, doctors. Each has helped me. Today, I am saying thank you to one and all. When that next long run occurs, and it will, you may not be running by my side, but your presence will certainly be with me.
