At the last MDRA Board Meeting, about a month ago, I volunteered to write the opening letter to this issue of RunMinnesota. Seemed like a simple enough task. Maybe write something about the slowing of the 2012 racing season, the Polar Bears running group and what MDRA means to me. But, then the real world hit MDRA in ways that can’t be fixed by simply going for a run. First, we lost former MDRA President Jeff Winter to cancer. Jeff’s legacy encompasses MDRA, Twin Cities Marathon and his signature race, the City of Lakes. Then we lost former board member Colin Farbotko to ALS. It has been a rough month, and the MDRA family is grieving, while our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with Jeff’s and Colin’s families. I cannot do justice to what Jeff and Colin have meant to MDRA or how fortunate I feel to have known them both. There is nothing I can write to fill the void they have left behind. In a confluence of coincidence, the first time I met Colin and Jeff for the first time was at a City of Lakes around 2006. I can’t remember what my volunteer duties were that year, but it was important enough that I had to meet with Jeff in advance (Jeff likes his ducks in rows and all stones turned). And somehow I had to coordinate what I was doing with Colin. So, when I think of City of Lakes, I think of Colin and Jeff. In their own unique way, each was very no nonsense, which is one of the most appealing things about the sport of running. A course. A stopwatch. People to race against. No frills. No excuses. Jeff was certainly no frills, and Colin personified no excuses. The last week or so I have been thinking of both of them and how it fits into my own running. I got into running in high school in the late 80s in south Texas, because it wasn’t football. That was pretty much my original reason for running, and then I happily found out I was good at it. Back then, cross country was still a rebel sport outside of the mainstream. We busted our butts in anonymity for a weird sport no one cared about, and we liked it that way. And actually there were people who cared: other runners. When I look back to what running and racing was back then, I think of Jeff. Jeff wasn’t selling an experience in his races. He was selling you a challenging course, with accurate results and a competitive field. That’s the simplicity that welcomed me to the sport of running in high school. No frills. And then there is Colin. I ran with him on the MDRA race team in 2008. One of his arms was already notable for its atrophy. But, Colin never complained about it. He never expressed worry about it (he wasn’t sure if the atrophy would progress into ALS at the time). He just ran. And when he could no longer run, he stayed true to who he was, with a trademark biting wit and creative, warm spirit that never wavered. No excuses. As we move forward as an organization, we will remember what Jeff and Colin brought to the lives of those that knew them and our running community as a whole. We recognize our own health and don’t take for granted the next run is as far away as where we last left our running shoes. And we will remember the simplicity of running. And we will continue to build a welcoming community of runners who take the sport seriously but also use the sport to make and build friendships. If MDRA as a whole, including all its members, can foster that vision, then we will honor the legacy of Jeff and Colin more than any one runner can. We run for so many reasons, and community is one of them. Our community is strong because of Jeff and Colin, and will be stronger as we remember them.

FROM YOU Dear RunMinnesota, When Jeff Winter passed away last Saturday, the running community lost a man whose vision, skill and tireless labor created the foundation upon which the Minnesota Distance Running Association has grown. I am sure that you probably have received countless letters and comments about Jeff’s terrific talent for organization and how important his work was to today’s organization. While he is being remembered as a leader in the running community, I hope he will also be remembered for his character. I ran with Jeff nearly every day and for thousands of miles back in the 1970s. In 1975, Jeff was the race director for the Land-o-Lakes Marathon that was run on a course around Bald Eagle Lake in the first week of October. The race started in the middle of the day, because cool temperatures were anticipated. It was about 90 degrees. Jeff warned everyone about the heat and the need to take water. He told us all to be careful out there. I was 24, in excellent condition and planned to run a fast race. As things developed, I went out with the leaders in the race. We had excellent splits through more than half of the race. Unfortunately, I was not keeping my fluids down. By mile 17, Jeff, who was out on the course watching out for participants, realized that I was running fast, but knew looked awful. He told me I was in trouble. “Your eyes are funny.” He actually tried to pull me off the course. I slipped out of his grip and continued. At mile 20, Jeff was positioned a short way down the road. I decided to drop before I got sick. I spent the next three days in the hospital on IVs with heat exhaustion. Jeff came to the hospital every day and checked in to see if I was getting better. After confirming that I was getting better, he gave me my daily scolding. The MDRA did not thrive simply because Jeff was a terrific organizational man. MDRA thrived because Jeff cared deeply about his friends, the runners.

Let us know what you think. Contact Heidi at heidi@runmdra.org.

Cost is $5.00 for the entire series. This is above and beyond the race entry fees, and is a one-time fee paid to the MDRA. GP scoring will include only GP registrants who are registered finishers of a GP race. No retroactive registration; runners registering after Irish Run Saint Paul, for example, will not be counted in Irish Run Saint 3DXOÂśV GP results even if they ran it. Entrants must be MDRA members. Runners score according to their finish place out of all GP registered finishers each race. The first GP runner in each race will score 1,000 points. All others will score based upon the percentile in which the runners finish such that the middle finisher will always score 500 points. Points are awarded without regard to age or sex. In scoring races we use USATF rules (thus gun time is used rather than chip time) There are 13 GP races. A runner may compete in as few or as many of the races as they choose; however, results from only 10 races will count. If a runner runs more than 10 races, only their 10 highest scores will count. Anyone running in 10 or fewer races will have all of their scores included. Scores are tallied within age division for each sex. Runners do not change age divisions during the year. A UXQQHUÂśV Givision is set according to his division on the day of his first GP score. For example, a runner turning 50 on April 1 would be scored all year in the 45-49 bracket if she runs Irish Run Saint Paul as a GP registrant, but would score all year in the 50-54 bracket if her first GP score is after April 1. Age groups for both male and females are 0-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 7579, 80-84, 85+. In order for an age group to exist, it must have at least two participants, and each participant must complete 2 races. In addition, in order for an individual to win an age group they must run in at least 2 races. Grand Prix standing information will be included in RunMinnesota, on the MDRA website @ runmdra.org, and e-mailed to all participants. There will be awards for each age group winner, which will be presented at the MDRA annual party held in January 2014. Also, MDRA will present a special award to anyone who participates in all 13 races. In addition, anyone participating in at least 10 of the races will get an nice MDRA technical shirt The dates listed above are the probable dates, but should be reconfirmed as race day approaches.

REMEMBRANCES BY HEIDI MILER

JEFF WINTER, 1943-2012 Jeff Winter, an icon of Minnesota running for 40 plus years, passed away peacefully at home, October 13. Jeff had melanoma removed from his arm earlier in the spring that at the time seemed rather innocuous. He kept a busy schedule throughout the summer as he always did. Jeff being a creature of habit, he stuck with his 6:00 a.m. workouts at Lifetime Fitness on Cedar Lake Road, early morning “office” sessions at Dunn Bros. coffee shop, nine hole golf outings, beloved motorcycle trips, Twins game check ins, People for Parks (president of the board) business and preparing for the upcoming thirty-first edition of the MDRA City of Lakes 25K. Saturday, August 18, Jeff was brought to the ER after being slow to respond that morning. He was diagnosed with three metastatic melanoma tumors in the frontal lobes of his brain stemming from the spread of the melanoma. At that point on, Jeff was in a battle for his life. He never left the hospital or recovery facility again except to go home for hospice care. Jeff leaves a legacy to runners throughout the state in many aspects. He was awarded with a lifetime achievement award at MDRA’s Fiftieth Anniversary party two years ago. Jeff was President of MDRA during four critical years of growth from 1977 to 1980 when mem-

6

bership skyrocketed from 300 to 3,000 members. This proved to be an important period of history as MDRA was capturing the new runners from the maturation of the running boom. Thanks to Jeff’s organizational skills the train didn’t run off the tracks. With his leadership, the increased work load did not phase or panic the board, even though most of the work was done by the volunteer board and officers, including printing a bi-monthly newsletter, putting on races and handling the huge increase in membership. One of Jeff’s signature events he founded and directed is the MDRA City of Lakes 25K. Just completing its thirty-first year, this race was developed from a Winter directed and founded race called the City of Lakes Marathon (from 1972 to 1974, this race was at Bald Eagle Lake and named the Land of Lakes Marathon). 1975 brought a new location for the MDRA sponsored Land of Lakes Marathon to Minneapolis on Jeff’s beloved lakes course. This event was now co-produced by MDRA and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. The Land of Lakes sponsorship was

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012

lost, and in 1977, the race was renamed the City of Lakes Marathon until the last running in 1981. This marathon was the precursor to the MDRA City of Lakes 25K which began in 1982 and is still run today. Jeff wrote the history of the Land of Lakes Marathon retrospective that ran in the September/October 2003 issue of RunMinnesota and can be found at www.cityoflakes25k.com. As long time race director, Jeff was an advocate for the runner. He made race directing an art and instilled a higher degree of professionalism, including creating possibly the first timing company in the state: Start to Finish Race Management. Jeff was a perfectionist, sometimes to my great chagrin! I spent countless hours out on the Ron Daws 25K course with him in nasty March weather as we had to assess the yearly construction changes and new course possibilities. He was relentless in making it a true challenge just as it was back in the day when Daws, Hoag, Jeff and others traversed the course for their Boston Marathon training. Jeff would get out the measuring wheel and go over and over certain sections until he was confident his beloved 25K distance was as close to true as he could make it. I know many a runner will miss his pre-race meeting (lecture) in the church gym that gave the history of the race, the history of the race’s name sake and also rather stern instructions on being safe out there along with the “updated” course we were going with in any given year. Jeff was ahead of his time in some respects. He was among

the first race directors to offer shirts to finishers in the 1974 Land of Lakes Marathon. Later on in 1979, he was lamenting the lack of creativity of race directors as the t-shirt had become the ubiquitous finisher memento. Reading through the 1979 fall edition of the Minnesota Distance Runner magazine (forerunner to RunMinnesota), Jeff was advocating for more low key races with a no shirt, lower fee option and using a fresh approach to producing races instead of the “current monkey-see-monkey-do approach” of finisher t-shirts. Possibly where the long standing tradition of the City of Lakes 25K finisher mug was born! Jeff Winter was one of a kind, his legacy of five decades of service and volunteerism to runners will never be forgotten. I, personally, will always remember his unfailing dedication to the sport of running and to MDRA. My last conversation with Jeff was the week he passed. I was at his bedside, and he could barely manage a whisper. He was interested in hearing about the 2012 running of the City of Lakes 25K that occurred a few weeks earlier. He looked pleased to hear we had increased our numbers again, and the race had some really fast times, including a new women’s course record. In a very soft voice, Jeff whispered, “Good show.” His legacy leaves us with many examples of how to put on a “good show.” I hope we at MDRA can make him proud carrying on his tradition of excellence.

COLIN FARBOTKO, 1978-2012

This one of a kind obituary for Colin Farbotko was shared by Colin’s widow, Marney Olson. Colin was instrumental in bringing MDRA into the digital age. It was with some kicking and screaming, but he wasn’t about to take no for an answer. He was the driving force behind a larger web presence and designed many of the earlier webpages with which MDRA was experimenting. There was rarely a meeting Colin didn’t draw up a new logo or singlet design for the board to consider. He was super creative and will always be remembered for his sense of style, sense of humor and love of running. Colin Yurek Farbotko, 34, succumbed to ALS October 15, 2012, after six years of valiantly fighting the debilitating effects of this vile disease. Colin was born August 13, 1978, to George and Janet Farbotko. Surprisingly, to anyone who knew him later in life, Colin was a mild mannered and well behaved child, especially in contrast to his rebellious younger sister, Anna. His formative years instilled in him a drive for creativity and out-ofthe box thinking.

Upon graduation from Hononegah High School in Roscoe, Illinois, Colin entered Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, for four years of typical adolescent male debauchery. During college, he and his father sculpted giant works of snow art, placing in competitions as far away as Switzerland. Graphic artistry, drinking, naked soccer and other (thankfully clothed) sports occupied much of his time. It was at Luther where Colin met great friends Kevin Franz, Pete Schoenebaum and many other good Luther friends. He

also met a young lady, Marney Olson, who would someday become his wife. Colin graduated with degrees in Art and Communications and moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, to pretend to be a grownup. Colin provided creative graphic, web and video design work for Target and Inscape Publishing and also did freelance work. He was an unapologetic Mac snob. He spent much of his bachelorhood biking and running around Minneapolis lakes and parks and entering local races. He participated in and completed the Wisconsin Ironman Triathlon. During the Lifetime Fitness Triathlon in 2004, he re-met Marney when she recognized and cheered for him during the race. They began dating immediately and were married April 1, 2006 (no joke). Colin loved Marney and his family and friends, good local craft beer (especially Surly), the Four Firkins, whiskey and gin, every kind of seafood and edible delicacy such as caviar, fois gras and tongue. Colin also enjoyed grilling on his back deck with friends, running, biking, skiing, double entendres, the Simpsons, The Jayhawks and other music, the Internet and being creative. He disliked bad drivers, people who talk in movie theaters and ALS. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to The ALS Association MN/ND/SD Chapter, 333 North Washington Avenue, Suite 105, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55401.

2013 MDRA

BOARD ELECTIONS All of the candidates were asked to respond to the following questions: 1. Please give a brief description of your running background. 2. Qualifications: What special talents and experiences can you contribute to the MDRA Board? 3. Goals and Plans: What committees would you like to be involved with should you win election/or have been a part of during your term on the board. Are there any specific changes or new opportunities you would like to spearhead during your tenure.

PRESIDENT POSITION (one candidate running for one open position) Michael Iserman 1. I have been running and participating in organized road races for well over ten years. Each year, I run 10-15 races at distances ranging from 10K up to full marathons. To date I have completed 36 marathons including: Grandma’s Marathon (11), Twin Cities Marathon (10), Minneapolis Marathon, Big Sur International Marathon, Chicago Marathon, Las Vegas Marathon, Denver Marathon, Disney World Marathon, and many others. 2. I have been a member of the MDRA since 2002. I have served two years as an at-large member of the MDRA Board and I am currently completing a second one-year term as the President of the Board. I have 20 years of experience working in fitness and personal training. Currently, I am the Director of Personal Training for the National Exercise Trainers Association (NETA) – overseeing NETA’s national Personal Training certification, related continued education course development, and presenting nation-wide certification workshops. Previously, I spent over 8 years as the Director of Personal Training for the YMCA’s of Greater Twin Cities. In that role, I provided oversight and support to the 22 local branches of the YMCA with regard to personal training and fitness programming. I have also participated as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on NETA’s Personal Training Role Delineation Committee and have served as the Chair of NETA’s Board of Certification. In addition, I have also been a SME for the American Council on Exercise exam development team and had served a two-year term on ACE’s Fitness Industry Advisory Panel. I hold professional certifications from the American College of Sports Medicine, the National Strength & Conditioning Association, the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and the American Council on Exercise. I am a graduate of the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology and currently in pursuit of a Master of Education degree in Applied Kinesiology.

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012

Voting is available online at www.runmdra.org or mail in to the MDRA office, MDRA, 5701 Normandale Road, Edina, MN 55424. Please vote for one candidate in each of the three officer elections: President, Vice-President and Treasurer. Please vote for 6 candidates running for the open board director positions. There will be one person elected to each of the officer openings and six open board directors elected. All current MDRA members are eligible to vote. Votes are due via online voting or the paper ballot to the MDRA office by midnight January 18, 2013.

3. As President, I would like to continue engaging the Board and MDRA members to become more actively involved in both the growth and impact of MDRA within the local running community. Nearly two years ago, I challenged to the MDRA Board of Directors to reverse the trend of declining membership and to increase MDRA membership to at least 2,500. I am pleased to report that we have achieved that goal with an overall growth of nearly 300 members since the end of 2010! Moving forward, I will strive to lead continued growth in MDRA membership; to increase participation in MDRA race events and programs; and to educate the running community regarding the mission and initiatives of MDRA.

VICE PRESIDENT POSITION (one candidate running for one open position) Norm Champ 1. I ran since high school, cross country and track. After that more off than on until the Marathon bug bit in’ 86. Post Grandma’s the joys of actively running and competing were a major part of who I was for 20 years. I found a great camaraderie with runners, in addition to the great physical and mental cleansing that exertion brings. If you’re reading this you know what I’m talking about. Although running can be a huge part of your life, most runners need to realize at some level, there is life after running. Seeing others run down the parkway, or going to WATCH a race, gradually becomes less and less painful and more and more fun. I joined the Board in 2004, serving as Vice President the past two terms. 2. I am committed to the sport and the mission of MDRA. Perhaps my best qualification is I show up. I (again) urge MDRA members to give back to the organization. Volunteer at a race! It is really fun and you get to see the other side of the events you participate in. MDRA can always use help putting out water or treats to support our running programs. As a volunteer driven or-

2013 MDRA BOARD ELECTIONS ganization we can only be as strong as our membership makes us! 3. I have served as chair of the Race Committee, and would like to continue in that service. I would like to see an introduction to more Race Volunteers and the preparation of more MDRA race directors. We rely too strongly on too few individuals. We have worked hard to add members, now we need to get more members involved beyond sending in their yearly dues and waiting for the race calendar.

TREASURER POSITION (one candidate running for one open position) Josh Jacobson 1. My running career started more by accident than anything else. As a freshman in high school I was more of a husky kid and was out for Track and Field as a thrower (Shot Put and Discus). One of the coaches stood up as we were pulling into the meet and asked if anyone wanted to run an 800 on the 4x800. And as the saying goes, “The rest is history.” Since that first exposure to running in high school, I ran competitively in high school and then used running as a way to cross-train while I swam competitively in college. Since college I have been running to both keep in shape and to challenge myself with some races (10k to Marathon), trying to better my times each race. 2. First I have had a passion for fitness and running since high school. My undergraduate degree was in Exercise Science from St. Olaf College. This led me into the fitness industry as a Personal Trainer for 7 years before I began the next phase of my professional career. I have also received an MBA from Hamline University and currently work in Corporate Finance with experience in both for-profit and non-profit finance. 3. First and foremost, as the role of Treasurer, I would like to continue with the predecessors’ work, keeping the MDRA a financially strong and relevant non-profit organization. Secondly, I would like to continue to grow MDRA’s influence in Minnesota and the running community as the go-to organization for runners statewide. Runners as a whole, regardless of ability or experience, have a thirst for knowledge to improve their health, fitness level, and performance and are looking for a group or organization where they will find camaraderie in these goals. I would like to help the MDRA grow into what these runners are looking for.

BOARD MEMBER ELECTIONS (eight candidates running for six open positions)

work full-time outside the home, and am married to a man who works long hours and collects graduate degrees as his hobby. I was in desperate need of an outlet that fit my family’s schedule and kept me connected to something other than work and family. I’m not the fastest and obviously not always the wisest runner, but I’ve learned it’s something I enjoy and that’s all that really matters. In so many ways, running has positively impacted every part of my life. Not only do I have a new hobby I have a new obsession. 2. Yes, I have run a few marathons, a couple of half marathons that have turned into 10-milers and even some trail races. I have also served on a couple of boards with success. Professionally I manage projects by leveraging my strengths and building partnerships. I accomplish this by listening, observing and assessing the needs of the business and our employees. In my current role, my focus is to build a strategy to deliver a competitive product that’s sustainable and sets the stage for profitable growth. I am also a former Marine so I can be pretty bossy, but I can follow and give directions as well. Bottom line, I think what you need to know is that I am passionate about the MDRA community and I am a hard worker. 3. My goal is to keep MDRA relevant and build upon our strengths. We are the largest and oldest running organization in Minnesota! We are not a fad; we are a community of runners and friends. In all honesty, I don’t feel it’s fair to lay out a specific plan without learning more about our organization and the direction we are headed. My focus, however, would be on advocacy and promotions.

Darrell Christensen 1. I began running in about 1998, after retirement, and ran my first marathon in 2000 after running the inaugural TC 10 mile in 1999. My second marathon, in 2003, qualified me for Boston and really got me into the running scene. 2012 has been a series of injuries, but hope to return to full race schedule in 2013. 2. I have created many friends and new runners through running clubs and volunteering at races, expos and general activities. 3. The race committee is interesting because I am involved, when healthy, in running nearly all of the events. I would be interested in attending more secondary races as a representative of MDRA to help promote the organization to those that continue to be unfamiliar with us. Perhaps in lesser of a role than we get involved with now at the larger expos. I think that often some of these smaller venues may have runners that are not into the big events yet and they may be somewhat easier to enroll. Each board member could choose a secondary race or 2 to recruit new members.

Kate Bomsta 1. I started running long distance on a dare. One week before the 2010 Minneapolis Half Marathon, my friend didn’t think it would be wise for me to run as I had only ran a couple of 5/10k’s. For research I turned to Facebook and asked what I needed to do in preparation. Taper was everyone’s response and taper I did not. That hot June morning I suited up in my cotton tank, cotton socks and my old, ill-fitted, grass-stained, lawn mowing shoes. Our carbo-loading party the night before was a success, plus my friend gave me something called a GU right before the race. I was set. My original goal was to finish, and I did, but I also found a hobby and a community that led me to MDRA. You see, I am also a mother of 2, I

Jim Delaplain 1. Using the term “running” loosely, I started running in 2005 at age 46. It was my wife’s fault. She was a runner and had been asking me for years to start. I had stopped smoking and decided to be healthier. Since then I have run 13 marathons (with a P.R. last year of 3:58, 3 minutes faster than Paul Ryan) and 8 half marathons. This includes Twin Cities (2x), Chicago, St. George Utah (2x), and Grandma’s (8x). I have been training with the MDRA Spring and Fall Marathon Training Programs since 2007, and was a Team Leader with the MDRA FMTP this last fall. I just completed certification as a running coach through the Road Runners Club of America.

2013 MDRA BOARD ELECTIONS 2. I have been serving on the Board for the past year, and am on the Programs Committee. I serve on one other Board also, so I have some familiarity with the Rules of Order and procedures under which the Board operates. I am an attorney in private practice for the past 15 years 3. I have been on the Programs committee for the past year and am interested in continuing to serve on that committee, overseeing transitions occurring in the MDRA Marathon Training Programs, with the hope of keeping those programs vital and relevant to the running community.

David Hong 1. I started running Cross Country in Junior year of high school and have been an avid runner ever since. In May 2011 I successfully completed my first marathon in Eau Claire, WI. In spring 2012 I set a goal to qualify for Boston, and I’m happy to recently have qualified during this fall’s Twin Cities Marathon! (I’ll be running Boston in 2014.) I run regularly with the Calhoun Beach Running Club as well as compete in the USATF team circuit on the Foley & Mansfield Racing Team. 2. I have led numerous company-wide projects in my career as an Engineer at St Jude Medical, and I enjoy organizing and leading new crossfunctional initiatives. These skills will allow me to successfully contribute to the board through leadership of new or existing programs. I also had the honor of captaining the St Jude Medical Twin Cities Marathon corporate team, through which I experienced the challenges and rewards that come with organizing running events and promoting running within a larger community. 3. I would like to participate in race organization or promotion activities. I am open to helping out wherever needed, but would most enjoy the opportunity to expand MDRA’s race offerings or to improve the promotion of the organization to young adults.

years. I would like to continue work with new coaches to expand our programs in other areas of the metro. 3. I would love to help with program committees, as well as continue coach classes.

Michael Nawrocki 1. My background is varied, in a getting slower and just running for fun sort of way. I have been running since middle school and ran competitively in high school and college. Then I raced recreationally. Now I jog.... sometimes. But some things that has been a constant: I love running, being around runners, and talking about running. So even though my competitive running days are well behind me, I still love this sport, the Minnesota running scene, and being a part of MDRA. 2.I have served on the board for two terms. During that time I have started a new Thursday night running program that is only one year old. I have coached several marathon training classes. Also, with the help of other MDRA coaches and board members I helped build our Polar Bear runs into a signature MDRA program. Lastly, through coaching and over 25 years of running (15+ in the Twin Cities), I have gotten to know so many different types of runners. We all come to the sport for different reasons and with different expectations, and the more the board can recognize the diversity of our organization’s members, the better. 3. I want to continue to build the Thursday night runs and am considering making these runs track workouts (with some hill workouts) for all comers. In 2012 I had ran the group with Ryan Albu, who was great to work with, so I am always looking for members to partner with for our programs. Another program I would like to explore is having a marathon training class for Boston qualifiers and anyone else running an early spring marathon.

Eve Stein Mary Johnson 1. I’ve been running all my adult years. 5K and 10K were my favorite races. When I was approaching 50, my son persuaded me to tackle the longer distance. I began training for and running half marathons and marathons. Today my most enjoyable distance is the half-marathon and my goal is to keep moving. 2. My qualifications for the MDRA board are simply my love of running and my belief in this organization. 3. For the past three years on the board I have been involved in promotions. That is where I would like to continue. MDRA is an organization that welcomes all ages, all paces. Anyone who wants to run a 5K to a marathon can train with MDRA and reach the finish line. I’ve been successful running with MDRA, have made many great friends and have had a lot of fun. want to invite others to join MDRA and have a similar experience.

Heather Kick-Abrahamson 1. I ran in track and cross-country in junior high and high school in New Prague, MN and at St. Cloud State. I have completed 26 marathons and 25 ultras-including 8 races over 100 miles. I have also done 10 tris (Sprint to Half-Iron Distance). I also have coached runners of various ages and levels from beginners to runners training for ultras. 2. I have been a runner for over 20 years. I have organized and coached beginning to intermediate running programs for MDRA the past two

1. I started running in High School and did my first citizen 5k in 1985, a Halloween Run in Madison. My running continued with 5k, 5 mile, and 10k races until the early 1990’s when I ran my first half marathon. I ran two full marathons in the late 1990’s. When I moved to Duluth, I started trail running and got off of roads. I now run many trail halves, typically 4 each fall. My involvement in the running community also involves volunteering, taking pictures, writing articles and a blog, race creating and directing, timing, and officiating at races. I take all the pictures for our local trail series up here in the spring and the fall, help some at Grandma’s marathon events , write articles for Silent Sports Magazine and officiate the MN state cross country races. I coached running and nordic skiing with Northwest Club Run for five years and coordinated the nordic program also. Recently I created a Zilch to 5k running group, Trails 101, and most recently Xtraining 101 in Duluth. The running experience I am most proud of is when I pushed my dad up a mountain in a wheel chair during a half marathon at altitude in Arizona last year! 2. I have so many special talents and experiences to contribute to the board! My background in race directing, participation, timing, and more are all things I am able to contribute to the already very talented and knowledgeable board! I would also like to get a couple of MDRA series races in Duluth along with more members up here. 3. I would like to work on the race committee, help at an expo or two, and any other opportunities that I can get to!

NUTRITION

Eating on a shoestring Fuel your training with healthy options on the cheap BY NATHAN LECKBAND

I

like to run, and I like to eat. The two seem to compliment each other. The more I run the more calories I need to take in. Both my wife and I are avid runners, and we spend a good portion of our disposable income on running related items, so we try to limit our spending on food while still eating healthy. Unfortunately, eating healthy is not cheap. According to a 2007 University of Washington study, the average cost of 1,000 calories of “healthy” food was $18.76, while 1,000 calories of “junk” food was $1.76. When I run 50 miles in a week, in order to maintain my weight at 155 lbs, I need to consume about 22,000 calories. According to the University of Washington study, if I ate “healthy” foods, my weekly grocery bill would be about $418.00, while I could sustain myself on “junk” food for about $39.00 a week. How does a runner get the calories they need while striking a balance between calorie dense “junk” food and nutrient dense “healthy” food? There are several answers for the budget conscious runner. My wife and I eat a lot of whole grain cereal and drink a lot of milk. An eight ounce glass of two percent milk contains 130 calories and contains protein, carbohydrates and fat that help maintain caloric needs at a minimal cost. At around $3.00 for a gallon of milk, the cost per 1,000 calories is a paltry $1.44, which is even cheaper than “junk” food calories. Whole grain cereal, at around $3.00 per box (or less when buying store brands), costs only $1.75 per 1,000 calories. Another way I supplement my caloric intake while eating healthy is with smoothies using Greek yogurt. Then, I can get nutrient dense foods like blueberries, bananas and spinach, into a low fat but energy dense smoothie. A quart of Chobani Greek yogurt is a little pricey at around $6.00, but with 23 grams of protein per serving, it costs $9.33 per 1,000 calories, which is half the average of other “healthy” foods. I also buy a lot of frozen fruits and vegetables. Often, frozen fruits and veggies are flash-frozen right out of the field. They contain as much or more vitamins and minerals as their fresh counterparts. Buying them frozen means they last longer and are often less expensive than buying fresh. I also keep food costs low by buying dried legumes and bags of rice. When I make chili, I can get ample protein and carbohydrates while still staying within budget. Eating healthy and eating on a budget need not be mutually exclusive. A well balanced diet can include both energy dense foods, like peanut butter and milk, and nutrient dense foods like whole fruits and vegetables. The key is to be mindful when grocery shopping, look for sales and eat foods you enjoy.

20 1 2 Twin Cities Marathon Race Recap BY CANDY PATRIN

From left to right: Mo Trafeh, Jeanette Faber, Womens 10 Mile lead pack, Chrisptopher Kipyego

Most Minnesotans like to run in cool temperatures. As the old saying goes, “Be careful what you wish for.” Runners who lined up for the thirty-first Twin Cities Marathon (TCM) Sunday, October 7, were greeted to a 28 degree thermometer reading. It was the third coolest temperature at the start in the history of the race. And, perhaps just a little bit too cool for some of the elite runners who traveled to the event from places quite a bit further south. Marathon In the men’s open division, Christopher Kipyego, age 38, of Kenya won the marathon with a 2:14:53. Kipyego, the 2010 Grandma’s Marathon winner, reportedly described the marathon pace of the lead pack as very slow into the first 10 miles due to the cool temperatures. The Kenyan pulled away from the pack at mile 21 and sustained a lead to the remainder of the race. Chasing Kipyego to the finish were Berhanu Girma, 25, of Ethiopia who took second place with a 2:15:04 and Sean Quigley, 27, of Boulder, Colorado, at third with a 2:15:06. Girma is the 2012 Grandma’s Marathon winner and Quigley finished in sixteenth place at the 2012 Olympic marathon trials in January. Taking the lead at mile 23, American Jeannette Faber, 30, of Portland, Oregon, won the women’s open division with a 2:32:37, a personal record (PR) and more than four minutes faster than her time at the 2012 Olympic marathon trials where she finished

in twenty-first place. TCM was Faber’s thirteenth marathon and thirteenth consecutive PR. Hirut Guangul, 20, of Ethiopia finished in second place with a 2:34:02, and Melissa JohnsonWhite, 31, of Lake Orion, Michigan, came in third with a 2:34:02.* Johnson-White earned a victory in the Twin Cities earlier this fall when she took first place at the City of Lakes 25K with a 1:28:27. In the USA Masters Marathon Championships for runners over age 40, Ulrich Steidl, 40, of Seattle, Washington, won the men’s title in 2:20:59. Nuta Olaru, 42, of Longmont, Colorado, won the women’s masters in 2:36:57. Decorated wheeler Saul Mendoza, 45, of Wimberley, Texas, won his fourth USA Master’s Title with a 1:47:26. It was also Mendoza’s ninth victory in the Twin Cities, making him the most winning athlete at TCM. For females, the win went to Tracy Tabaka, 31, of Rogers, Minnesota, at 2:58:59. It was Tabaka’s second consecutive win at TCM. The cooler temperatures seemed

to agree with many of the runners. The average finish for marathoners was 4:16:41, quite a bit faster than 2007 when the starting temperature was a much warmer 62 degrees. During that recent “hot” year, the average finishing time was 4:47:54. In addition, there were 9,041 runners who finished the marathon this year, which is the highest number in the event’s history.

10 Miler The USA 10 Mile Championships featured an equalizer option for the second time, this year giving the women a 6:31 minute head start over the men. The equalizer was added in 2011 to add some excitement between the men and women runners as they approach the end of the race. The finish turned out to mirror last year’s race with both the men and women defending champions repeating their victories. Mo Trafeh, 27, of Duarte, California, finished with a 46:56, catching Janet Bawcom, 34, of Rome, Georgia, in the last mile. Bawcom’s time was 53:43. In the men’s race, Ben True, 26, of Portland, Maine, repeated as

the men’s second place finisher with a 47:19. Jacob Riley, 23, of Rochester Hills, Michigan, was third in 47:22. For the women, Olympian Kara Goucher, 34, a Duluth native and currently Portland, Oregon, resident, came in second at 53:56. Alisha Williams, 30, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, took third at 54:08. Goucher holds the TC 10 Mile course record of 53:16, which she set in 2008. There were 7,752 finishers for the 10 mile event.

2013 Looking ahead to 2013, there is one question that has drawn a lot of interest from local runners. Where will the marathon and 10 mile start next year given the plans for the new Vikings stadium? Some local news reports indicate that preliminary plans show construction will begin in the fourth quarter of 2013, which brings the timeline right up to the October 6, 2013, TCM date. According to a TCM spokesperson, in 2013, it is likely that the HHH Metrodome will be used for the Sunday start of the races with any change to occur in 2014. However, it is always a good idea to visit the TCM website for the latest information about the course. *Finishing times are calculated to the tenth of a second and rounded up to the nearest full second in road races. Guangul crossed the finish ahead of JohnsonWhite, albeit by a slim margin.

20 1 2 MDRA Fall Marathon Training Program

BY GLORIA JANSEN

Long distance running is not a lonely activity when your training partners include 120 runners and nine team leaders in the MDRA Fall Marathon Training Program. Starting at the end of June, and coached by Denny Jordan, Sheila Becker and Gloria Jansen, the group met on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings for 16 weeks. As if hill workouts, half mile repeats and long runs weren’t grueling enough, training in heat and humidity, windy and cold weather, plus a Saturday morning thunderstorm in Bryant Lake Park, ensured everyone would be prepared for anything and everything on race day. Not to complain, the drought of 2012 also provided plenty of dry and comfortable days that made running

with a group of friends totally enjoyable. Races on October 7 were the main focus with a majority of class participants running in the Twin Cities Marathon and TC 10 Mile races and another 12 MDRA runners lining up to run the Chicago Marathon. Runners from the fall class also prepared for marathons in Mankato, Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, New York and Dublin, Ireland. Several others preferred to test their fitness on trail races, including the North Face 50K, North Face 50 Miler and the Lean Horse 50 Miler. Not to be outdone, Rochelle Christensen warmed up by swimming 4,224 yards and biking for 112 miles before starting her marathon at Ironman Wisconsin, September 9.

Members Absent: Andrea Adams, Mary Johnson, Heather Kick-Abrahamson, Jody Kobbervig, Eve Stein, Andrew Plackner

Special Guests: Meghan Krause and Kori Fitschen stopped by the MDRA Board meeting to give a short presentation on Girls on the Run and some of the background of that program. A flyer they gave out gives the following information: Girls on the Run Twin Cities, Inc. inspires girls in the 3rd to 5th grades to be joyful, healthy and confident by combining training for a 3.1 mile race with important lessons about body image, healthy living, friendship and more.

Treasurer’s Report: Jody Kobbervig presented the Treasurer’s report. MDRA’s budget performance remains on track. The income was slightly behind projections but expenses are also down a similar amount. Advertising revenue is down in 2012 due to decreased ads from national sources (i.e., Running Network).

2,484 (prior month: 2,485)

Membership totals for each month include online registrations that aren’t paid for until the following month. Those new members and renewals are then included in that months membership chart. RunMinnesota: Currently working on the September/October issue. That issue will be the first that board members will write the President’s letter column. We will need to think of a catchy new title for that column that runs in the front of the magazine each issue. Volunteers: Still looking for volunteers to pitch in at upcoming races including the Women’s Half Marathon, MDRA Victory Labor Day Races and the MDRA City of Lakes 25K.

COMMITTEE REPORTS Advocacy: No report. Club Administration: Board member Jim Delaplain brought a proposed amendment to the MDRA Bylaws regarding board elections. His proposal revised and updated section 4.8 which deals with Election of Directors. Jim updated language to make the election process more standardized from year to year and clarified the voting process for the membership of MDRA. He will have his final draft of this proposal for the board to vote on at the September meeting. Programs: The Fall Marathon Program now has over 100 paid participants with new runners joining weekly. There was some discussion to add a paid support position to the coaching staff as it is a great deal of work to put out water stops at many locations each week and focus on coaching. Many thanks to Rob Lundquist for his volunteer services as he currently handles much of these water stop duties but isn’t always available. Promotions: MDRA will have a booth at the Lady Speed Stick Women’s Half Marathon and the Twin Cities Marathon, possibly Mankato Marathon as well. Publications: It is time to start putting the 2013 edition of Running Minnesota together. Editor, Barb Leininger has sent an email survey to all previous race listings. The deadline to get this information in is September 30. There are links to the survey on our website and www.runningventures.com. Race: MDRA rented equipment to 10 races since the last equipment report. The total income was $705.00. MDRA also used the equipment at 3 MDRA races. The MDRA 15K was this past weekend on Sunday, August 12. The 15K had excellent numbers while the 5K was much smaller than last year.

Treasurer’s Report: In Jody Kobbervig’s absence Heidi Keller-Miler presented the Treasurer’s report. MDRA’s budget performance remains on track. Office Manager’s Report:

RunMinnesota: We are currently working on the September/August issue. Barb Leininger, editor for our Annual Calendar, has begun collecting race data to include in the 2013 issue. Deadline for submissions is September 30, 2012. Volunteers: Requests will be sent for people interested in staffing the MDRA table at the Twin Cities Marathon expo. We had enthusiastic and plentiful volunteer support at the 2012 City of Lakes 25K. Thanks to everyone who participated!

COMMITTEE REPORTS Advocacy: MDRA has donated swag to the silent auction for Club Run. Nathan suggested inviting other, smaller running clubs to join the FMTP on long runs. Club Administration: Candidates for board members are now being accepted for the MDRA Board of Directors. There are ten seats available for election. Programs: The Fall Marathon Program is winding down as runners begin tapering in preparation for TCM, Chicago, Mason City, Rails to Trails, and Des Moines. Coaches this session are Gloria Jansen, Sheila Becker and Denny Jordan. Nathan Campeau will coordinate a post-program survey gauging participants’ satisfaction with this season’s training class. Mike Nawrocki begged for more money for a 2013 Track and Trails program, recognizing the 2012 program will conclude after TCM. Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) coaches’ certification class will be held October 13-14 at LifeTime Fitness in St Louis Park. MDRA has several members taking the class in preparation to lead future MDRA marathon training classes. Promotions: At the Twin Cities Marathon expo this year, we will repeat the highly successful “Refer a Friend” promotion. MDRA window clings and business cards will be distributed. There are still opportunities to staff the MDRA expo table; interested parties should contact Heidi Keller-Miler at hmiler@hotmail.com Publications: MDRA has availability for a select number of newsbrief items to be published in the September/October issue. Contact Heidi Miler at hmiler@hotmail.com for an entry form. Race: All the Victory races were well attended, and the City of Lakes 25K (COL) and the MDRA 15K were tremendously successful. COL is under review by the board. Discussion points include the possibility of a new race director, a different distance, an alternate race date, partnering with another race group to share the work of directing the race, and increasing MDRA presence in the race. To aid the discussion, Drew Plackner is reviewing the budget, as well as the financial and participant history of the race. Although registration for the Como Relays was somewhat lower than last year, the Relays will be held in 2013. There are opportunities to assist in producing this race. Interested parties should contact Heidi Keller-Miler @ hmiler@hotmail.com The equipment crew supported fourteen events, eight of which were non-MDRA. The Grand Prix will arguably be even more competitive in 2013 with thirteen races versus the fourteen that comprised the 2012 series. The Hagen Financial Run for Blood 5K (July) and the Rochester Half Marathon (August) have been dropped from the 2013 roster, and the MDRA 15K (August) has been added.

USATF: No report.

USATF: Melissa Wieczorek reported that, in September, the USATF board of directors meeting was held and board members were voted in.

New Business: The September board meeting is going to be the 3rd Monday of the month, September, 17, 2012.

RUNNING INSIGHTS

Forward to Throwback: Jeff Winter BY PHILLIP GARY SMITH

O

n the Shady Road Lake-loop of the Ron Daws 25K route this late October Sunday morning, well before dawn, nice and cool much like the April weather of that Spring race but now ending the year; its Fall. I kept recalling Jeff Winter as I made way around quiet roads like Dominick, his iconic truck parked like a friend at check-points, milemarkers along with his drive-bys always in touch with the runners, problems, the pace. This year as he passed me early on, he pulled ahead, parked, hopped out and said race-hellos, good-to-see-you, then with a wave, took off again. Later, on his counter-clockwise wrap-up while I ran the Birchwood Road squiggle-route before landing on Baker Road, he waved again in passing. Later that morning, showers persisting and as happens in the rear-with-the-gear where I find myself, those behind my position—those few probably—give up. No matter the place in a footrace, front or back, one is either trying to catch someone to pass or working to stay ahead of a chaser from behind. I was pursuing a runner ahead by some distance occasionally fanaticizing I might be gaining. Nearing the Cross of Glory Baptist Church in Hopkins, the traditional gathering spot for this event, beginning the last five-mile loop, she dropped. The distance to the next run-

28

ner is unknown to me as I saw no one for the remainder of the race . . . except for the finishers walking the several blocks from the finish line to the church. I jokingly asked several to “Come on, add another 5-miles, what the hey,” but that didn’t inspire anyone. I emailed Jeff of my finish on Monday, April 9, putting all the positive spin I could muster on the fact I made it after all the stakes were pulled up. “Jeff, just for the unofficial record, made it across the line as the last finisher of the race but certainly not last place (‘150th finisher of the 200 entrants,’ he replied, nicely avoiding pointing out many of the 200 didn’t show). I couldn’t quit—it wouldn’t respect the race’s namesake, Ron Daws—nor could I just stop though my pace was an apparent struggle. But, I didn’t really fret it. I finished when others didn’t, benefited from a great time, and enjoyed this route, too. I’ve liked (all of the routes for this race); perhaps it’s nice just to see you holding what looked to be the ‘old’ sign with the wacky arrows and directions; and your comments in the pre-meeting ‘They built new sidewalks, we’re gonna use ‘em’ was the correct sentiment, too. Thanks again for your efforts for this race.” He added in his email reply, “Phillip, got your note and wanted to get a belated delay back to you (April 12, just three days later; he was very good on those details). You had the look of

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012

Jeff, the race-director with the forward vision to rename his throwback competition in honor of his friend, are “Running Free Forever” someone who intended to finish. Glad you were able to do so and experience the original terrain of the ‘old’ course. Many seemed to enjoy the challenge of the ‘Pukes Peak’ by two (as the course loops up-and-down that Bren Road triple-level hill twice; makes one wonder if the residents of some of those posh residences know the classic name of their mount—‘We live at the corner of Vista and Pukes Peak’—extends back to the Daws Olympic Marathon training days of the 1960s that Winter, Pat Lanin, Steve Hoag among others ran together.) The race course sign you saw dates back to the mid-late nineties. All my personal best to you. Thanks for your follow-up note. With my best regards, Jeff Winter” I interviewed Jeff a few years ago at his home. Jeff, like many with important accomplishments,

pursued many interests outside of his race management duties (that also includes the brimmingwith-history City of Lakes 25K). He really perked-up talking about his interest in motorcycles and engines, excitedly showing me a display piece used in a show. I write a column on the media coverage of professional drag racing where there is a whole class of bikes, so we talked more about his motorcycle knowledge than anything. Now, both the namesake of the Ron Daws 25K and Jeff, the race-director with the forward vision to rename his throwback competition in honor of his friend, are “Running Free Forever” together as Daws’ marker reads at his entombment.
