Chad Austin lives in Apple Valley with his wife, Amy, and two daughters. He followed his dad out the door at the age of 10 and has been running ever since. In addition to writing for MDRA, he’s an avid blogger. You can read his daily musings at http://cnaustin.blogspot.com/. Chad can be reached at chadaustin@charter.net.
Sonia Maassel Jacobsen has run the roads of Minnesota for about 24 years. Between travel for her work as an agricultural engineer and family travel, she has completed 38 marathons and many other races in some interesting locations. She has three grown children and shares a home with her husband and two cats.
Pat O’Regan is a runner and freelance business writer. He is a graduate of St. Thomas College and the University of Minnesota. Born and raised in Montgomery, Minnesota, Pat currently resides in Inver Grove Heights. He runs eight to 10 races a year, mostly 5Ks and 10Ks, with two marathons to his credit. He has also “competed” in three National Championships.
A St. Louis Park based freelance writer, Kristin Pladson has spent nearly as much time sidelined by injuries as she has spent pounding the pavement. But, don’t blame her 18 plus years of being a vegetarian. She places the blame firmly on a genetic goodie bag chock full of bad knees and bullheadedness. When she’s not running the lakes, doing yoga or twittering or writing about running and doing yoga, she can be reached at kjpladson@yahoo.com.

Running Legend Lloyd “Forever” Young Passes Away July 18, 1923 to August 17, 2011 Lloyd Young passed away at the age of 87 after a several year battle with cancer. He was a long time MDRA member and holder of many state and national records. He continued to run marathons and races of all distances up until his illness took its toll. Lloyd Young was a frequent visitor to Minnesota from Grantsburg, Wisconsin, until late 1988, when he moved across the border for good. He won his age group the next year and then spent a few years in the shadows of Alex Ratelle and John Keston and another few years sidelined by injuries. Young now has over 100 Minnesota age records, far more than anyone else. He has the Minnesota age group records for Men 70 to 74, 75 to 79 and 80 to 84 at the 5K, 8K, 10K, 15K and half marathon and for Men 75 to 79 and 80 to 84 at the 25K, 30K and full marathon. Young also has three U.S. age group records and an unknown number of single age records. He was twice named U.S. Master Runner of the Year in his age group and 14 times as “Best Minnesota Runner.” The last time he lost a race to a Minnesotan in his age group was 1997. Since 2000, it’s been rare when anyone even five years younger than he can match even his slowest time at any distance. MDRA was fortunate that Lloyd offered the proceeds from sales of his poetry book to the organization. His book, For the Laurels, is available by contacting Heidi at heidi@runmdra.org.
I have this Rock inside my shoe, and yes, it hurts, as many troubles do. I’ll leave it there for yet another mile, then, when it’s gone, perhaps I’ll smile; for, as many the hurts I have known, it may have been a very small stone.

Running on Veggies Proper fuel for vegetarians by Kristin Pladson Distance runners tend to be dogged competitors. Whether it’s against a fleet of sleek singlets, our own PR or just overtaking that bobbing blond ponytail five feet ahead, we build our training plans to finish better and stronger than we did the race before. We run hills under the hot summer sun. We flaunt our inflexibility during cross training yoga sessions. We brazenly fartlek in public. We lift, we sprint, we run long. Very, very long. And then we eat. As any runner who has bonked, passed gas or experienced some other form of, ahem, gastrointestinal distress, the types of foods that fuel those workouts is critical. Choose the wrong foods and a run can quickly turn ugly. But, with the right diet, a runner can boost his or her performance and overall health. For some runners, that diet just so happens to be fueled primarily by plants. “Plant based diets have many health benefits,” said Rasa Troup, RD, and dietician for the University of Minnesota Women’s Track and Field and Cross Country teams. “Vegetarian diets are associated with lower blood cholesterol, lower risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure, lower risk of hypertension and type two diabetes. They also tend to have a lower body mass index and lower overall cancer rates.” Yes, distance runners can be vegetarians...and fast ones at that. If you already count yourself among running vegetarians like Carl Lewis, Edwin Moses and ultra-marathoners Scott Jurek and Charlie
Engle, read on. For those of you happily engaged in a ribeye refueling plan, Troup encourages you to take another look at the quantity and quality of fruits and vegetables in your diet. “All of us can do better in our fruit and vegetable consumption. And runners in particular need more antioxidants, minerals and vitamins…that are provided by incorporating more fruits and veggies.”
Getting Started A common question meat eaters ask their plant eating friends is, “What do you eat?” In the early stages of becoming a vegetarian, learning how to modify recipes and eating out, while still achieving both the calorie and nutrient needs of a distance runner, can be tricky. “The very most important thing a vegetarian runner needs to do is meet his or her energy needs,” says Enette Larson-Meyer, PhD, RD and author of the book Vegetarian Sports Nutrition. “If they don’t meet those needs then the protein they consume is going to be broken down and used for energy instead of as a building block for muscle.” With a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, vegetarian runners can find it difficult to meet the calorie needs a long distance running schedule can demand. Troup emphasizes the importance of balancing fruit and vegetable consumption with “other calorie dense foods like pastas, nuts, seeds or even liquid based options like smoothies.”
However, switching over to a vegetarian diet doesn’t just mean leaving the meat out and continuing with a poor, yet calorie rich diet. For current and prospective vegetarians, it’s important to make a conscious shift from animal protein to rich plant based proteins, says LarsonMeyer, and to assess your overall diet. Questions she recommends asking include, How much of your diet is made up of processed food? How many servings of fruits and vegetables are you getting each day? How many different types of protein sources are you eating? For new vegetarians, it’s important to make the shift over to a meatless diet gradually rather than going, ahem, whole hog. “Transition over a couple of weeks or months,” recommends Larson-Meyer. “During that time, experiment with recipes, meat substitutes like soy, mushrooms and a variety of beans. Get a good vegetarian cook book, and play with what flavors and textures work for you.” This is also the time to consider whether a multivitamin or supplements like Vitamin D or fish oil are necessary. When transitioning to a vegetarian diet, it’s beneficial to talk with your physician or a sports dietician about your diet and exercise patterns. Local registered dieticians specializing in nutrition for athletes can be located online through SCAN (Sports, Cardiovascular, and Wellness Nutritionists) at www.scandpg.org, a division of the American Dietetic Association.
The “P” Word For many vegetarians, protein, and getting enough of it, is a primary concern. “Athletes in general have higher protein needs than sedentary individuals,” says Troup. “But most vegetarian athletes can meet their protein needs with a well balanced and varied vegetarian diet.” After first making sure that you’re getting enough calories to meet the high energy needs of an endurance athlete, the key to getting enough protein in a vegetarian diet is variety, comments Larson-Meyer. “Think about what proteins you’re consuming at every meal. Add black beans to your cheese tortilla, chickpeas to a leafy salad or peanut butter to whole grain toast.” Other great sources of protein include soy based products, eggs, beans, cottage cheese, nuts and seeds. Protein is also a critical component to recovery after a long run or hard workout. “Consuming carbohydrates and a source of procontinued on page 32

Runner Reborn Jim Sheehan by Patrick O’Regan (Carter Holmes contributed to this article) Jim Sheehan, age 60, an outstanding master runner, wanted to leave the following message for master athletes: An aneurism (basically, a bulge in a blood vessel) often shows up between the ages of 50 and 60. If an aneurism is on or near the heart, it is particularly dangerous, and a person needs to know it is there. It can be detected with an echocardiogram (ECG). In fact, an ECG is required for Olympic athletes. If you have an aneurism near your heart, it is not the end of the world. ‘Knowing I have one,’ Jim said, ‘and keeping an eye on it, I feel like I have a whole new lease on life.’ The same can be said for many health issues. More about this later. Jim’s beginning as a runner is a story of the sudden blossoming of a talent. His family was prodigiously talented. His grandfather was a state 440 meter champion in 1906. His father was most valuable track athlete of the year in Minnesota in 1943, when he won the state championship in the 440 meters and was a member of the winning 4 x 220 relay team, along with actor Peter Graves. All Jim’s siblings (he was second oldest of 10) were athletic. One was an All-American football player, another was an All-American swimmer, a third played hockey at the University of Minnesota and four years as a professional. His younger sister was a three time Big Ten Champion and three time AllAmerican swimmer. To broaden the athletic scope, one of his brothers held the national weightlifting dead-lift record for 19-year-olds. But, Jim went through grade school and three years of high school without running at all. Then, in his senior year 1968 at Mounds View High School, he began running, under the coaching of Bob Steward, and took off. He made the all-regional team in cross country. In the indoor season, he set a school record in the mile in 4:32 that would stand for 17 years. One relay record lasted 32 years in the distance medley. He also set the school outdoor record for the mile in 4:24. Interestingly, he didn’t make the state meet. He was third in the region (top two qualify). It was a time of great high school runners in Minnesota:

Bjorklund (4:05), Slack (4:09), Hanley (in Jim’s region: 4:13) and Greg Nelson (4:16). That Jim ran in college is a testament to the impact that a coach can have on a young athlete’s life. “After high school,” Jim recalled, “I thought my running was over. Then I got a call from a guy who changed my life.” That was Coach Al Halley of Southwest High School. He said that Jim belonged in college running and encouraged Jim to get down to Mankato State University. Jim was to run there, outstandingly, for three years. Some of his major accomplishments include: • Setting a field house record in the mile: 4:16, on a short track • Running five miles in 23:20 • Running, with his partner Les Dunsmore, arguably the finest runner ever from Mankato, the second fastest 10 mile relay (alternate laps) in the world that year (43:39). They averaged 64.5 seconds per lap and bested many other teams, including one of the terrific University of Minnesota runners Mike Hanley and Terry Thomas • Inducted into the 2008 Hall of Fame, as a member of the greatest track team in the history of Mankato State University As a senior, running in the conference cross country championship, alongside the fine runner Mike Slack, Jim pulled up with back pain. “What happened?” Mike would later ask. “I knew you could outkick me.” Six days later, Mike would win the Division II National Cross Country Championship. Jim would learn that he had four bulged and two herniated disks in his lower back. His running was over. Jim’s running resurfaced after a 35 year hiatus in July of 2005. There is nothing like a health scare to jump start an exercise program. A blood test showed that Jim was a prime candidate for a heart attack. Diet and bike riding came into Jim’s life. He dropped 25 pounds. He wanted to run, but the back pain gave him pause. Even since college, he recalled, there had been “pain, pain, pain.” On a lark, he ran a short distance to the
RunMinnesota
top of a hill on the road in front of his house. “I was shocked that I could run again,” Jim said. “I couldn’t believe it.” He ran a half mile every day for five months. “Running is a gift from God,” he said. “I was not grateful enough to Him when I ran [as a young man].” To run well, one must love to run. A quote by Jim in a newspaper article on him sums up how he feels about running. “Sometimes I feel like I could fly. I can’t believe the rush you get from running as fast as you possibly can.” Encouraged by Doug Bell, one of the premier master distance runners in the U.S., Jim entered the 2006 National Indoor meet at Boston. Though he had only a couple hundred miles of running in him, he was ninth in the mile and eleventh in the 800 meters. Some highlights of four years (55 to 59) of competition that followed include: • He won four All-American certificates (5:17 for the indoor mile, 2:24 for the indoor 800 meters, 4:59 for the outdoor 1500 meters and 59.8 for the 400 meters) • He set the Minnesota indoor 800 meter record (2:22) and the 1500 meter record (4:50) • Ran at the Drake Relays twice as the oldest runner in the masters 800 meters (2:19 and 2:22) • Ran on the fastest 4 x 400 national regional championship team for the 55 to 59 age group (4:11) All that, and he missed one of those years with an injury. Jim started suffering from extreme fatigue
Minnesota Distance Running Association
in May of 2009. While preparing for the new age bracket of 60, his blood pressure increased to an average of 147/83, sometimes soaring as high as 162/96. Undaunted, at the 2010 World Indoor Championships at Kamloops, Canada, Jim was third fastest in the 1500 meters and fourth in the 800 meters. But the bouts of fatigue and high blood pressure continued. “What is wrong with me?” he wondered. “This isn’t right. I don’t feel right.” At the Indoor National meet, the physical problems mounted. He felt too awful to run the mile. He had a groin pull in the 400 meters and a hernia problem in the 800 meters. Still, he was part of the winning 4 x 400 relay team. He went home to figure out what was wrong. Initial blood tests were all negative. He would wait on the hernia to heal. But in a shocking development, an ECG showed the presence of an aneurism on his heart. He went to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. There, an antibiotic for a urinary infection solved the high blood pressure problem. But the aneurism remained. Another trip to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester led to further tests and an anxious wait for the results. “Would I need surgery?”
Jim thought. “Was I going to live?” Finally, the doctor, a track athlete, told him he likely had had the aneurism all his life. No surgery would be necessary. He was told to run again, and he started right away. “Now that I’ve found out,” Jim said, “I can live with it and keep training. I feel like I’ve started my life over again.” He wants to encourage others to look out for their health and have an ECG. “Running may have saved my life,” Jim said. “Without running, I would not have discovered the aneurism. Who knows what that would mean?” Life becomes more precious when you encounter the Grim Reaper. “Having the aneurysm was a reminder,” Jim said, “to always make sure to thank people for their kindness and friendship. Because you never know how long you have on your journey in life.” Jim began a new training program right away. He ran 20 minutes easy for two weeks and then added two more minutes a day up to 40 minutes. Track workouts were added for speed. “I love the hard workouts,” he said. “And I love to compete.” Not to turn this into a medical article, but one more medical condition needed to be handled: the hernia. Though he had run with this painful problem for some time, including the
National and World Indoor Championships, it could no longer be ignored. He returned to Rochester. The surgical procedure had to be repeated twice to get the thing fixed. Right after the operation, Jim wanted to know when he could run again. They told him to hold off for two weeks. Apparently, that is all he can handle. Now that he’s ended his arduous health issue trek, he’s already planning his return to competition. “I only want to become the best runner that God made me,” he said. He has in mind the 2011 National Masters Indoor and the World Championships in Sacramento the same year. In closing, Jim wanted to express his gratitude to the masters athletes he has come to know. “The treatment I have received from every one of them has been so warm, kind and generous,” he said. “The master athletes are the nicest people in the world.” RM

Favorite Minnesota Fall Runs by Kristin Pladson Temperatures are dropping and the days are getting shorter. Mid run mosquito bites have been replaced by post run pumpkin beer. And those thigh baring running shorts? Taken over by skin hugging tights. Yes, it’s official. Autumn has arrived in Minnesota. For many runners, this is the last stretch before the satisfying crunch of graveled trails is replaced by the wintery whir of indoor treadmills. Thankfully, the crisp air and scenic views of a Minnesota fall create the perfect time to get out and explore. To help you make the most of this season, we’ve pulled together some of Minnesota’s most spectacular fall runs. With thousands of routes traversing a state with such diverse landscapes and scenery, we surely missed a few grand views. But, we’re certain the following routes will impress with vibrant colors, fragrant leaves and unmistakable Minnesotan scenery. If you have a few hours
Chain of Lakes www.minneapolisparks.org What list of beautiful Minnesota lists would be complete without this old standby? “The fall colors and the panorama of the downtown skyline are so emblematic of why the Twin Cities is known as a great running city,” says Bill Wenmark, founder and president of the Twin Cities based American Lung Association Running Club (ALARC). And Wenmark should know. For over 30 consecutive autumns, he has led his crew of dedicated runners through this string of lakes, soaking in the urban, fall beauty with every step.

If you go: If you’re a Lake of the Isles or Calhoun devotee, mix things up with a trip around the reedy shores of Brownie and Cedar Lakes, the two northernmost waters in the chain.
Winchell Trail www.nps.gov/miss Recently restored, the Winchell Trail on West River Road in Minneapolis provides five miles roundtrip (2.5 miles one way) of dramatic cliffs, river views and two hillsides chock full of trees bursting with vivid fall colors. Kate Havelin, author of Minnesota Running Trails: Dirt, Gravel, Rocks & Roots considers this trail a hidden gem in the Twin Cities. “This is one of my favorite fall runs,” says Havelin. “It has great views, good footing, varied terrain and is right in the heart of the city.” If you go: Access to the Winchell Trail is near the Franklin Avenue South or East Lake Street bridges and ends near 44th Street. To experience the lower gorge, break away from the main trail on one of the many unpaved dirt paths or steps down to the river where you’ll find softer dirt and sand as well as spectacular river views. For a longer run, follow the trail all the way to Minnehaha Park, cross over the Ford Parkway Bridge and loop back along the paved path on East River Road.
Hyland Lake Park Reserve www.threeriversparks.org Minutes from either the Minneapolis or St. Paul downtowns, the Hyland Lake Park Reserve offers nearly 18 miles of uninterrupted scenic trails. “The vibrant colors and
RunMinnesota
wildlife are extraordinary,” says Wenmark. This centrally located park boasts both heavily wooded areas as well as open expanses of prairie landscapes. Consisting almost entirely of joint friendly trail surfaces, runners will share the scenery of this park with bikers, hikers and four legged friends. If you go: Wenmark recommends stopping by one of the park’s visitor centers for a trail map before venturing out on your own. Runners new to the trails can also link up with ALARC (www.alarc.com) on one of their weekly explorations of the park. If you have a day
Nerstrand State Park www.dnr.state.mn.us “Nerstrand is one of the last, great examples of the disappearing ‘Big Woods’ of Minnesota,” says Havelin. While many visitors arrive in the spring to view this Northfield area park’s unique and even endangered wildflowers, fall is one of Havelin’s favorite times to visit, when runners can spend hours on wide dirt trails in a “maple, basswood forest bursting with red, orange and gold.” If you go: While the brilliant canopy of col-
Minnesota Distance Running Association
orful leaves catches your eye, Havelin cautions runners not to forget potential hazards on the trail. Visible in the summer months, rocks and roots hidden by leaves can create occasional footing problems.
Crow-Hassan Park Reserve www.threeriversparks.org Despite their iconic status, trees and colorful leaves aren’t the only stars of a scenic Minnesota fall. For runners ready to expand their definition of fall beauty, Havelin recommends the shimmering purples and golden waves of prairie grasses in Crow-Hassan Park Reserve. Located near Rogers, this park features 600 acres of restored prairie, spacious meadows crisscrossed by more than 10 miles of trails, small lakes and the Crow River. If you go: If Fido likes to tag along on your runs, but still has energy to burn after you’ve ticked off your last mile, check out CrowHassan’s 40 acre off leash dog park. For a $5.00 day pass, your furry running partner can romp in the river while you cool down walking the park’s two mile mulch path.
Mille Lacs Kathio State Park www.dnr.state.mn.us Wetlands are abundant in Mille Lacs Kathio, the fourth largest state park in Minnesota. “In the spring, the park can be terribly buggy due to the moisture,” says Havelin. “But after a good cool period in the fall when the bugs are gone and the leaf color is at its peak this park becomes one of my absolute favorites in greater Minnesota.” More than 35 miles of rolling hills bring runners to scenic Rum River, lakes, beaver ponds and second growth forests of aspen, birch, maple and oak. If you go: Take a second pair of shoes. While soggy spots aren’t as much of a concern in the drier fall months, runners may occasionally run into a muddy patch or long string of puddles. If you have a weekend
Jay Cooke State Park www.dnr.state.mn.us With breathtaking scenery all year round, this untamed terrain features 50 miles of mild hills and secluded single track dirt and soft grass trails that are particularly gorgeous during the
cool fall months. No matter what trail you choose to explore, be sure to take a side trip to run across the swinging suspension bridge perched high above the St. Louis River. This densely forested park is also home to big wildlife (think black bears, timber wolves and great blue herons), so keep your eyes peeled for fleeting glimpses of unique trail partners. If you go: An easy drive from the Twin Cities, Jay Cooke is the ideal way to experience northern Minnesota trails without braving the summer construction currently surrounding Duluth. To further ease driving woes, consider camping in one of the park’s many scenic, wooded campsites or reserve one of five rustic, one room camper cabins.
Superior Hiking Trail www.shta.org In the northeastern section of the state, what the fall season lacks in length it more than makes up for in brilliance. “In my mind, any trail along Highway 61 is worth running,” says Havelin. “But the Superior Hiking Trail has some truly brilliant sections worth any drive.” Running from Duluth to the Canadian border, the Superior Hiking Trail is a deeply wooded 277 mile trail. While sections of the trail are better suited to low speed hiking, Havelin recommends a roughly 17 mile section running from Temperance River State Park to Moose Mountain. Easily divided into shorter sections via side trails, such as the Oberg Mountain Loop, this route provides gorgeous views of fall forests and big water and is a challenging, yet runable course. Farther north, access the Superior Hiking Trail at Judge C.R. Magney State Park outside of Grand Marais. Home to the mysterious Devil’s Kettle waterfall, Brule River and deep forests of birch and aspen, Havelin deems this section of the trail “challenging but well maintained and blessedly secluded.” If you go: While this trail encompasses some of the best scenery Minnesota has to offer, it isn’t for runners seeking easy runs across smooth trails. Be prepared for hills, ruts and rocks and the occasional trail map consultation. While use of the trail is free, consider making a donation, volunteering or joining the Superior Hiking Trail Association to help support maintenance and management of this state treasure. RM
>Fall Running Safety Get noticed With the fall colors also come the rifles. When deer season opens in November, the remote forests surrounding state parks are often prime real estate for dedicated hunters. Havelin recommends calling ahead to double check safety and sporting as much blaze orange as possible.
Make it social For many runners, nothing is more social or safer than hitting the trails with a friend or two in tow. If solitude is your running goal, be sure to let someone know where you’re going and how long you’ll be out.
Just add water On many of these trails, water stops are few and far between. Be sure to check online or at trail centers for information and bring along your own hydration when necessary.
Lay it on With moderate temperatures, fall may be the best season for running. But those temperatures can also shift quickly with a late morning sun or early afternoon dusk. Don layers to help your body adjust and stay comfortable.
Easy does it Many of the listed runs take place on rutted and rocky trails. For both safety reasons and injury prevention, choose trails according to your fitness level and desired challenge. Slow down. Watch your footing. And be sure to pay attention to trail signs to be sure you’re sticking to your planned distance.
Gear up For paved, mulched and gravel trails, your standard issue running shoes will do. When taking on something a bit more rugged, consider specially designed trail running shoes.
Be kind to nature In any season and on any trail, leave it like you found it. Discard trash in designated receptacles, stay on marked trails and help keep the trails in great shape for future runners.

GOALS & PLANS: There are currently five committees that oversee the various activities of MDRA (Advocacy, Race, Promotions, Publications, Programs),
plus many outside committees (such as Twin Cities and USATF MN) that require representation from the Board. How would you like to devote your time as a Board member. Are there specific changes or new opportunities you’d like to spearhead during your tenure?

Running in Minnesota during the
The 1990s was a decade of excellence
for the running community in Minnesota, led by numerous Olympians. In 1992, Janis Klecker won the Olympic Trials Marathon. Four years later, the most Minnesotans ever (11 women and five men) would qualify for the Olympic Trials Marathon, including Bob Kempainen. Who can forget his Olympic Trials Marathon victory in 1996? Even though he was vomiting during the final miles, he was able to pull away from the field for the win. In that same race, 39-year-old, Steve Plasencia finished fourth. The following year, the two time Olympian at 10,000 meters would go on to set many masters records, including winning the Meet of Miles in 4:19. When it comes to shorter distances, Richfield native Steve Holman was the top American miler of the 1990s, which earned him a spot on the 1992 Olympic team. Young and old runners alike were also inspired by the performances of the 90s. Future Olympian, Carrie Tollefson was busy assembling a national record: five consecutive individual state cross country championships. She would continue her successful career at Villanova, where she won five NCAA championships individually. Another local high school runner, Luke Watson of Stillwater, won the National Junior Cross Country Championship in 1999. Bill Andberg, also known as the “grey ghost, at one time held 19 world age group records. His success as an older runner inspired many to run or continue to continued on page 19 run. In 1997, Gloria Jansen was one of the top U.S. runners for women over age 50. Her Two-time olympian, Bob Kempainen

90s Racing: U.S. Talent in Decline by Chad Austin While Minnesotans experienced success on a national level during the 90s, many fans of the sport agree that the 90s was by far the worst decade for U.S. middle and long distance running. As a college runner at the time, I can only think of two runners who dominated nationally: Bob Kennedy and Todd Williams. Kennedy became the first non-African runner to break 13 minutes in the 5,000 meters. It would take more than 13 years for his American Record of 12:58 to be broken. Williams experienced success at the 10K and longer distances. In fact, his 15K American Record of 42:22 is now 15 years old. Although Minnesotan Bob Kempainen qualified for the 1992 and 1996 Todd Williams (left) and Bob Kennedy Olympics, medical school kept him from racing frequently enough to be at the top when it came to listing top U.S. runners. In essence, there weren’t any, or at least very few, running idols during the 90s. Searching the letsrun.com message boards reveals many theories for the decline of distance running in the U.S. during the 90s, including the 1980 Olympic Boycott, insurgence of African runners and changes in training principles. One person on letsrun.com claims the 1980 Olympic Boycott set us back more than most people realize. As a fringe sport, similar to swimming and gymnastics, running really only gains national exposure during the Olympic Games. By boycotting the 1980 Games, instead of going four years without national exposure, running in the U.S. had to endure eight years, thereby partially leading to the decline of the 90s. As proof, this idea states that about 75 percent of the top times in the U.S. for events of 800 meters and longer were set during the early to mid 80s. While runners like Alberto Salazar, Bill Rodgers, Greg Meyer and Mary Decker ran well in the 80s, missing the Olympics meant they also missed their opportunity to inspire the next generation of American runners. Another theory is that the U.S. started going backwards at the same time the Africans started getting better. While African runners experienced success ever since the 60s, their dominance really began to take hold in the 90s. By the 90s, fewer and fewer Americans were willing to live like that for the sole purpose of seeing how fast they could run. They figured they’d be better off, financially, by pursuing a different career. In fact, nearly any other career would be more lucrative. Perhaps the theory that has the most support regarding the decline of American distance running in the 90s is a shift in training, especially at the high school level. Through the 80s, Americans focused on a high mileage approach that was made popular by New Zealand coach, Arthur Lydiard. In the 90s, training philosophies began to shift towards a low mileage, high intensity approach. Granted, this generalization doesn’t apply to every program in the country. However, a look at high school times for the one mile and two mile in the 70s, 80s and 90s provides evidence of this decline. Using 4:10 and 9:00 as benchmarks, 105 and 102 high schoolers ran under these times in the 70s. That number drops to 68 and 49, respectively, in the 80s. Then, it drops again to 38 and 17, respectively, in the 90s. Pete Gilmore is a national caliber runner who graduated in 1995. He states, “My generation was limited by our attitude. Part of it was the quality over quantity training that we were taught. But more importantly, we failed to look at the slow times and challenge those training theories.” While the 90s may have been “golden“ for many runners from Minnesota, the same can’t be said for U.S. distance running as a whole. Whether or not you agree with the theories stated above, when you look at how U.S. distance runners faired over the last 50 years, it’s hard to disagree that the 90s was by far the worst decade. RM

name frequently appeared in magazines and on national ranking lists. In addition to Andberg and Jansen, many other Minnesotans experienced success by setting many age group records, including Ellen McCoy, Ethel Furne, Thom Weddle and Lloyd Young. This was also a decade of transition for the Minnesota Distance Running Association. Race results shifted from being only in printed form to being available on the internet. MDRA began to provide an online schedule of races to replace the former phone hot line called Raceline. In 1996, MDRA and USATF Minnesota combined publishing efforts to release one magazine with the results of high school and collegiate competition in addition to open road races. Heidi Keller Miler became the office manager for MDRA and continues in that role today. The 1993 Running Minnesota Annual showed 90 events that cost $5.00 or less, and of those, 73 were $3.00 or less. A survey by MDRA in 1998 showed that race fees increased on the average $12.00 to $19.00 in an eight year period. The 1993 survey further indicated that the average MDRA member ran 29 miles per week and ran nine races per year. Of those responding to the survey, 73% had a college degree or higher formal education. The median age was 41 years old. Fifty eight percent of respondents were men and 42% were women. The median household income was $55,000. However, the 1990s were not without controversy. The Northern Lights Running Club held an annual race from 1978 to 1994 that gave women and girls the rare opportunity to race against each other without the shadow of men. The race was discontinued because of a sexual discrimination suit, which threatened to reverse more than 20 years of advancement in the area of female athletics. Twin Cities Marathon, now Twin Cities in Motion, added a 10 mile race in 1999 as a companion event to the marathon. Due to its success, the 10 mile race uses a lottery entry system and is one of the most popular races in Minnesota. The Golden 90s offered races at many distances on many weekends, including through the winter. Races grew in size, and the age range of competitors stretched. Minnesotans were inspired by those among them who set records and achieved goals. Indeed, it was a golden decade. RM

90s: Then and Now by Heidi Keller Miler THEN... in 1990, Ed Rousseau was running the FANS 24 Hour race at the age of 50 and running 110.3 miles and placing second.
NOW... Fast Eddie Rousseau placed twenty-fifth and ran a very impressive 87.91 miles at the young age of 70.
THEN... Jarrow Wahman (co-owner of Austin-Jarrow in Duluth, Minnesota) was winning the MDRA Grand Prix.
NOW... 20 years later, Jarrow Wahman is once again winning the MDRA Grand Prix. THEN... MDRA individual membership fee was $15.00. NOW... it is only $25.00. THEN... Metrodome running was $1.00. NOW... still only $1.00. THEN... the price of Oakley® sunglasses was $100.00 to $150.00.
NOW... it is still about the same price, but you get less for your money as they don’t cover up nearly as much of your face.
THEN... runners complained about 5Ks costing upwards of $10.00.
NOW... runners wouldn’t even think twice about paying $30.00 or more to even walk a 5K. THEN... the MDRA 25K race the first Saturday in April was called the MDRA Inclement 25K, and the race entry fee was $3.00.
NOW... the race is called the Ron Daws 25K, and the entry fee is only $4.00. THEN... in 1990, Jeff Winter was the race director warning runners of caution due to heavier traffic along Shady Oak Road and keeping the race a low key no frills event.
NOW... Jeff Winter is still the race director warning runners of caution due to heavy traffic along Shady Oak Road and keeping the race a low key, no frills event.
THEN... local running stores in town that gave MDRA members a discount were Athlete’s Foot, Elite Wave, GBS Sports, Gear, Marathon Sports and Run n Fun.
NOW... only three of these stores are in existence and still giving MDRA members discounts: Gear, Marathon Sports and Run n Fun.
THEN... in 1993 a pair of the Asics Kayano could be found for $94.95. NOW... a pair of the Asics Kayano 16 can be found for $140.00. RM

tein within 30 minutes is really critical to recovery for all runners, not just vegetarians,” says Larson-Meyer. Since turkey sandwiches aren’t on the post run menu for most vegetarian runners, Larson-Meyer suggests a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, a smoothie made with yogurt or dried raisins with nuts. And when those aren’t handy, a Luna or Clif bar and a piece of fruit or sports drink are great and easily accessible post run snacks.
Pumping Iron While protein is relatively easy to learn to manage, iron can be a more slippery subject for many vegetarians. Unlike their animal brethren, plant based sources of iron are poorly absorbed and can be further inhibited by other meal components. “Try not to drink coffee, tea or other caffeinated beverages with meals as these can inhibit iron absorption. Instead, consume iron rich foods like pumpkin seeds, soy nuts, spinach, asparagus,
enriched pasta and rice and eggs with foods high in vitamin C,” recommends Troup. Vegetarian or not, however, Troup recommends that all distance runners and endurance athletes ask to be tested for iron deficiency. When tested, athletes should also make sure their physicians test their ferritin along with hemoglobin, as low ferritin can result in exhaustion, lethargy, slow recovery and an increased risk of injury.
Red Flags “A well thought out vegetarian diet can meet the energy demands of a distance runner,” asserts Troup. But it’s important to be vigilant about managing the calorie demands of endurance running while eating a variety of plant based protein and iron rich foods and keeping an eye on performance. If you notice any change in energy levels or performance, talk to your doctor or dietician. It may be something as simple as unintentionally cutting back on calories, says Larson-Meyer, but it’s important to rule out anything more serious or long term. RM

which are not reflected in these reports. Office Manager’s Report: Heidi was absent, but had provided us with her report. Membership numbers have been gradually ticking back up this year, though we are still below March 2009 totals. Heidi thanked the volunteers who helped in the spring races already held, and requested more volunteers for the upcoming races: Mudball 4 Mile on April 18, Mom’s Day 5K on May 8, and Mississippi 10 Mile on May 30. She is also looking for suggestions for our booth at Grandma’s Expo. Committee Reports:
June Board of Directors Meeting June 14, 2010 Members Present: Paul Arneberg, Kathy Benhardus, Nathan Campeau, Norm Champ, Darrell Christensen, Mike Iserman, Bill Knight, Bob Lindsey, Gary Nathan, Andrew Plackner, Melissa Wieczorek Guest Present: Heidi Keller Miler Members Absent: Debbie Bohmann, Mary Johnson, Mike Nawrocki, Lori Anne Peterson, Lisa Radzak, Kirk Walztoni Secretary’s Report: Bill Knight moved, and Bob Lindsey seconded a motion to accept the May minutes. The motion carried. Treasurer’s Report: No report. Office Manager’s Report: Heidi reported that we had a good response to our booth at the Minneapolis Marathon packet pick up. We picked up some new members at the packet pick up and also online in the days following. Our flyers will also be in the Stillwater goodie bags. Mike Iserman will help Heidi at the Grandma’s Expo on Thursday. Other board members will also work the booth on Friday. Committee Reports: Advocacy Committee: Nathan Campeau reported on his trails survey. He has already received good responses, but would like to extend the survey to running stores for their newsletters. Anderson Race Management will also carry the survey in its newsletter. Finnsisyou is looking for coaches for their trail running class. Club Administration: No report. Programs Committee: The new MDRA 5K/10K class is in development. Since MDRA is sponsoring the Twin Cities Marathon this year, we have been designated the official training class for the Saturday 5K and 10K races. Kathy Benhardus, Nobby Hashizume, Gloria Jansen, and Phyllis Stokke will be coaching the class from August 11-September 29, 2010. The class will be featured in the TCM newsletter, and we are printing flyers. The cost is $60.00. Andrew Plackner suggested that we introduce them to the coaches of some of our other training classes as well. Debbie Bohmann is coaching a 10 mile class this fall, as well. The spring marathon class is having a party at Majors in Bloomington on July 1st. It’s important to keep the runners who join through our training classes in the loop. Promotions Committee: We discussed our practice of selling annuals at the running stores, without memberships. Darrell suggested a coupon inside offering

MDRA memberships for $10.00, since they had already paid $14.95 for the annual. Another suggestion was to provide a link to the MDRA website on the Team Ortho website, since their events attract so many new runners. We will continue to have booths at Grandma's and Twin Cities Marathon Expos. Publications Committee: RunMinnesota is in the mail.

Race Committee: There will be a meeting of this committee following this meeting. The Mississippi Ten Mile went well, a good run and nice weather. The Grand Prix has dropped the Boston Scientific 5K on July 24 in favor of the 10K. They may drop Get in Gear next year. The question was asked if races should apply to be in the Grand Prix. Perhaps we should have certain requirements for these races. There are over 100 runners in the 2010 Grand Prix. Upcoming races include the Minnehaha Fun Runs on Wednesdays in July, the Como Relays also on Wednesdays, and the MDRA 15K/5K on August 15. USATF Report: Melissa Wieczorek reported that the number of Team Circuit teams is down somewhat. The latest two events were the Brian Kraft 5K and the TC 1 Mile. Team Minnesota runners continue to do well on the national stage. Jason Lehmkuhle’s 9th place finish at Boston was excellent. New Business: No new business. Old Business: No old business Meeting adjourned.

July Board of Directors Meeting July 8, 2010 Members Present: Paul Arneberg, Kathy Benhardus, Debbie Bohmann, Nathan Campeau, Darrell Christensen, Mike Iserman, Mary Johnson, Bill Knight, Gary Nathan, Mike Nawrocki, Lori Anne Peterson, Andrew Plackner, Lisa Radzak, Kirk Walztoni, Melissa Wieczorek Members Absent: Norm Champ, Bob Lindsey Secretary’s Report: Andrew Plackner offered a revision to the March minutes, and they were amended as requested. Melissa Wieczorek moved, and Nathan Campeau seconded a motion to accept the March minutes as amended. The motion carried Treasurer’s Report: Lori Anne Peterson reported a positive cash flow for March of $3,958.81 after all income and expenses. Our bank balance was $20,253.55 as of March 31, 2010. She also provided extensive documentation of our profit and loss budget performance year to date as compared to actual income and expenses. It is an excellent way to track our progress year to year. In addition, we have sold another $9000.00 in ad revenues
Advocacy Committee: Nathan expressed interest in participating in this committee. It would involve dealing with city park boards, Three Rivers, and other organizations to advocate for runners. Club Administration: Kirk appointed Mary Johnson to a one year term. We now have a full complement of board members for 2010. Promotions Committee: Heidi’s report regarding membership numbers sparked a great deal of discussion around recruiting and maintaining our membership. Gary Nathan suggested a membership committee, but that could really be seen as a part of promotions. It was decided that we should have a promotions meeting the hour before the MDRA board meeting on May 10. Mike Iserman spoke of being proactive rather than passive in our approach to recruiting new members. RunMinnesota can be used as a method to promote MDRA, as well as booths at other races. Mike’s blog is growing as more people become aware of it. His goal is to put ads in the blog, and perhaps blog about other clubs to bring in more traffic and show that we are not in competition with the smaller clubs. His blog is linked to www.runmdra.org. Another promotion idea would be an MDRA water stop at the lakes. Mary Johnson pointed out how important the “terrapin” group is in the marathon class. Slower runners need to feel that they belong. Possible slogan: Every PACE, every RUNNER, every DAY: MDRA. How’s that for a bumper sticker? Publications Committee: The March issue was quite late, coming out in early April. It was our largest issue ever, with 22 pages of ads. It also began our year long 50th anniversary celebration with a salute to the 60’s. Race Committee: No report USATF Report: Melissa reported that TCM is giving USATF-MN the opportunity to give away free memberships during the TCM “Freebie Friday” on their Facebook page. The Minneapolis Park Board raised their fees 32% from last year for the Brian Kraft 5K. They are now charging over $10.00 per runner. Nathan noted that this is a good example of the need for Advocacy. Most of the Minnesota Runner yearbooks are still left, and USATF is looking for ways to get them sold. The USATF Team Circuit races kicked off with the Human Race. In the TC 1 mile, all team circuit runners will be asked to run in the team circuit wave. The 2012 Olympic Trials marathon will be held in Houston. New Business: No new business. Old Business: No old business Meeting adjourned.
