FROM THE PRESIDENT NORM CHAMP Dear MDRA Devotees, I was shocked and thrilled to have been approached by nearly a dozen members after the last issue to say they read and enjoyed my most recent President’s Letter. Member’s read and enjoyed; catch that point. Of course that leaves over 2,000 who perhaps didn’t read or enjoy, but ya gotta stay positive! Last letter I spoke of gratitude to Sally and Tom of the Linden Hills Great Harvest. I am very pleased to report the relationship will continue with the new owner. Thanks Steve! This month I learned a long time contributor to MDRA, Ed Whetham, is moving into a full-time position with our friends at Twin Cities in Motion. Ed was a race director for many MDRA events over the years including the Mississippi 10 Miler, MDRA 15K and our Victory races. Thanks Ed! Sad to report another long time MDRA supporter, and editor of the Annual Race Calendar, Barb Leininger, has given notice that the 2015 Race Calendar will be her final. Barb has received about every award MDRA has to offer, but please extend your personal thanks to her next time you see her. So the guard changes, but MDRA moves on. We’ve had a great turn out for our Fall Marathon program, our summer track workouts and our summer races. All of these could not be done without dedicated runners and volunteers. Thank you all!

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014

MDRA received a nice letter from a long time member who moved to North Carolina, and was thinking about dropping her local MDRA (even from North Carolina) and USATF memberships, until she read one of my guilt trip letters. She renewed and wrote, “I thought, whoops, not so fast. Many thanks for opening my eyes. I do hope you are as successful with your Minnesota constituents as your North Carolinians.” Wow, thanks from afar Marien! I guess I can add another member reader making a baker’s dozen who read and enjoyed these ramblings. And the opportunities just keep on coming! Soon you will all have the opportunity to volunteer at a fall race, run for a seat on the MDRA Board or contribute in any way you can to the sport to which we devote so much time, energy and treasure. I have enjoyed (really) my first year as president of our association and will be on the ballot for a second (and final) term as President. MDRA by-laws will term me out after 2015, but those by-laws allow a tenth year of service to MDRA in the past president position for a final hurrah (but perhaps I should wait until the votes are counted in January). Keep on training and enjoying our sport and the beautiful autumn season. Enjoy every run!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT BY KEVIN ROSS

SARAH STANGL This issue, we are introducing a new feature that will showcase MDRA’s most valuable asset: our members. It’s called “Member Spotlight” and will provide a brief profile of an MDRA member, spotlighting their running history, goals and lifestyle, as well as their interests outside of running. Meet Sarah Stangl, a 27 year old Procurement Analyst for Target Corporation and a relatively new member introduced to MDRA through our marathon training programs. She credits the training programs for her continual speed and distance improvements over the past two years, leading to her Personal Best at Grandma’s Marathon this year and an eye on a Boston qualifier in the near future. When did you start running and why? My Dad has been running Grandma’s Marathon since before I was born, and this annual trip up to Duluth became my family’s yearly vacation. I was not into running at all growing up. Finally, after I graduated college, I gave running a try and found that when I worked hard enough, running actually became easier and more enjoyable. Soon after I signed up for my first 5K and then completed my first marathon a year later. I’ve now been seriously running for about four years and have completed seven marathons since the spring of 2012. What do you consider to be your favorite race/distance? Grandma’s Marathon What is your best memory from a race? Grandma’s Marathon 2014. I had such a great experience from the Spring Marathon training group (shout out to Rochelle and Gloria) that I knew this was going to be a strong race for me. My strategy was set well in advance, so all I had to do was show up and run. I felt very good the entire way, which was the first time this had happened for a race of marathon distance. I knew I had my PR in the bag at mile 20, but the best part was finishing at the end, and seeing my Dad. He had also run the marathon. His 31st consecutive Grandma’s Marathon. Although he got me by gun time, for the first time ever, I beat my Dad by chip time at a race, by one minute and two seconds.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014

What is your shoe of choice? Asics Cumulus What is your favorite quote? “I don’t stop when I’m tired; I stop when I’m done.” What are your interests outside of running? I am currently pursuing my MBA at Carlson, so that takes up the rest of my free time left over from running. I love traveling, which fits nicely with running through destination races. What is your next race, and what is your goal for the race? I am headed up to Hamilton, Ontario, for the Hamilton Marathon in early November with a few MDRA buddies. My goal is to cut off a few more minutes from Grandma’s to inch closer to my Boston qualifying goal. Why would you recommend MDRA to a friend? I would recommend MDRA to friends based on the sense of community. I cannot speak enough of the fun I have had over the past few years even on 20 mile long runs when I have not had faith in myself. The coaches have helped support and push me past those little lulls of doubt. If I were running on my own, I would probably be finished by now. MDRA has helped push me to the next level and find confidence in my ability. If you’d like to be featured in our Member Spotlight, contact Heidi at Runminnesota@gmail.com

ON THE RUN

The Anxiety of a Marathon Spectator

Pawel Kowalczyk / Shutterstock.com

26.2 mile journey can prove to be exhausting... for your loved ones BY JULIE PETTIT

M

arathon runners deserve much praise, but the serious marathon spectator also deserves a shout-out. If you’ve ever watched a loved one run a marathon, you can relate. Before my husband ran his first marathon, I learned that a small percentage of people die within 24 hours of completing the race. Since I’m a worrier, this fact alone unsettled me. Growing up in Boston, where watching the marathon is a spring ritual, I had seen some racerelated drama in my life. The tragedy of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing reminded us that good triumphs over evil, and you can’t suppress the spirit of a runner. But even before this horrific event happened, I witnessed these truths just by being a casual observer alongside the route. At mile 24 in Brookline, just outside the city limits of Boston, the runners are in the homestretch. Some zooming, some shuffling, others audibly groaning, with Fenway Park just around the

next corner. A local tavern has a DJ booth on the sidewalk, and the theme to “Rocky” is playing as the elite runners breeze through, still running five-minute miles. Their lithe bodies and effortless speed make me think, I could do that! The crowd is buoyant and lighthearted, with adrenaline and alcohol coursing through their veins. However, a few hours later, I observe runners who are sweat soaked and grimacing, some with blood running down their shirt from chafing. Others are hobbling as they try to power through cramping after four hours of running. One man collapses and has a seizure. Several spectators rush over, and the EMTs are summoned. So when my husband decided to run his first marathon, I was worried. It was a rainy 45 degree day in Duluth, Minnesota. However, after months of training, he felt well prepared. For me, unlike my other marathon watching experiences, I now had a personal investment. These were no longer just ambitious strangers that I was observing.

Also, I wasn’t stationary. I was able to take a train to the start, and then follow the route all the way to the finish line. This was a unique opportunity, because I could appreciate that 26.2 miles was not for chumps. After seeing his smiling face at the start line, I could relax with breakfast and Bloody Marys as the train chugged alongside the runners, who were trudging through the cold rain. I enjoyed seeing scenic Lake Superior, and the train stopped periodically, so we had the opportunity to cheer on the runners. But like all marathons, the real drama happened toward the finish line. When the train arrived in downtown Duluth, I still had a few hours to wait until he finished. I anxiously perused the shops as I pictured him in a ditch, crumpled over from cramping or in a medical tent suffering from hypothermia. But I tried to stay positive. About 30 minutes before his expected arrival at the finish line, his mom and I positioned ourselves under an umbrella, and I was re-

minded that this achievement is a true triumph of the human spirit. I saw a woman stumble and fall just 20 feet from the finish. Other runners helped her up and carried her across. I witnessed a couple cross the line holding hands. It was announced that they had just gotten married at mile 12. A soldier dressed in full uniform carrying the American flag completed the homestretch to loud cheers. Most obvious was the euphoria on the runners’ faces as they realized the end was near. And finally, I saw my husband. He was pale, soaked and a little dazed, but he had made it. It was a proud moment, and we all had a good cry. His spirit was tested that day, and so was mine. Marathons are dramatic and entertaining. Even for spectators, the emotions run high. I wanted to give each runner a little hug for their efforts. And when your loved one completes this feat, the pride that you feel after the ordeal is worth all the worry.

GET TO KNOW

Photo provided by Minnesota State University, Mankato Athletics

Mark Schuck BY PATRICK O’REGAN

Living is all about love and passion. So find what you love, and pursue it with passion Athletics was in Mark’s blood from the start. Born and raised in Nicollet, Minnesota, the seventh of eight kids, Mark found encouragement from his father (who sold cars in bib overalls), a lover of sports himself. Bob, Mark’s older brother, would drive Mark as a grade school kid, out in the country a ways, so he could run back to town. One has to get past the modesty to see what a good athlete Mark came to be. He was already earning letters for high school sports when in grade school. In high school, under the outstanding coaching of Fran Braunger, he would run the 400 meters in 53 seconds and pole vault 13 feet, a height that earned the silver medal in the state championship. He also played basketball and was a halfback on the football team, which was undefeated in his junior and senior years. Then Mark went to college at Minnesota State University, Mankato (MSU), where Mark was on the track and basketball teams. “I wasn’t a real good runner in college,” Mark said. “One of my stumbling blocks in life is to be mediocre at many things, but not outstanding at anything.”

6

He would run the 880 meters in under two minutes. One of the highlights of his career was being on the 4 x 880 meter relay team that competed in the Drake Relays, where Mark recalls watching Jim Ryun run a sub four minute mile and seeing Jesse Owens as the honorary meet referee. He played basketball under Art Ollrich, a terrific coach and mentor, and majored in Health and Physical Education. Mark’s track coach at MSU, a major influence on his life and career, was the legendary Earl (Bud) Myers. “Bud was a little rough at times,” Mark recalled. “You could love him and hate him in the first half hour you knew him.” He would jam his finger into the chest of an athlete to make a point, while calling him a “pot licker.” But he cared about the kids and he got results (19 consecutive conference championships).

Mark Schuck wisdom: MS: Have your rules, and stick to them. If a kid breaks a rule, put it back on his shoulders. “Don’t you have the guts to say 'no'?” If you must punish, make the punishment equal to the crime.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014

MS: You have to trust the kids. Teach them what they need to know, then pull back and let them make their own mistakes. It’s when they screw up that they need you most. Be there for them, forgive them. MS: Above all, stick with the kid. It would take a lot for me to become estranged from a kid. I never believed in kicking kids off the team, and I never did. So many kids have come to me later in life and said, “Coach, you are one of the reasons I have done so well in life.” “All my life,” Mark said, “I was so fortunate to have as mentors outstanding people from whom I learned a lot.” Their names are sprinkled throughout this article. Right out of college, Mark stayed at MSU, where he would remain for his entire career. In his first position, he taught and coached at the lab school, an innovative educational institution associated with the college for ages three through grade 12. In eight years there, he was head track coach and assistant basketball coach, under Gene Biewen, from whom, as usual, he learned a lot about coaching. At the same time, Mark volunteered

with the college track team. This work led, in 1973, to becoming an assistant track coach. The opportunities kept coming, and he kept taking them. MS: The most important thing a coach does is get the best kids at the school out for their sport. We have 14,000 kids at MSU; no question, some of those could be AllAmerican in track or cross country, even if they don’t know it. When I conducted orientation sessions I would say, “Is there anyone here who likes to run?” It should be noted that Mark got married during this period. Jane was the first and only love of his life. “I fell in love at 17,” he said. “It was the best thing that ever happened to me.” To this day, she has been the light and support of his life. “You can’t be a good coach,” he said, “without the support of a good family.” In another stroke of good fortune, as Mark sees it, he made a career move from the lab school to MSU. He was hired by Bill Webster, Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, as an academic advisor at the college. He continued to work with the track team.

The key is to create an emotional environment in which track is fun. This is hard to do since track is a love/hate sport. You have to love it to pursue it passionately, but hate it at times to be good at it. There is some magic in creating an environment in which the athletes feel horrible in training and at meets and yet enjoy training and competing.

Certified Active Release techniques for the treatment of soft tissue injuries: Then, in 1979, when Bud retired, Mark became head cross country, as well as assistant track coach, under Coach Chuck Peterson. He was learning, growing and preparing to take charge. This came in 2000. From then till his retirement in 2013, Mark was head track and cross country coach. During his career, Mark would also serve two terms as athletic director, first at the lab school and then at the college. In the second term, he followed Bob Otto, the MSU Hall of Fame football coach. MS: I have always tried to surround myself with people who are smarter than I am. For instance, I hired Matt Kolb, who is a genius at pole vaulting, to handle the pole vaulters, and Tom Dahlen, who is good at many events, to provide input on training and race assignments. MS: The key is to create an emotional environment in which track is fun. This is hard to do since track is a love/hate sport. You have to love it to pursue it passionately, but hate it at times to be good at it. There is some magic in creating an environment in which the athletes feel horrible in training and at meets and yet enjoy training and competing. It can’t be forced or planned; it just has to be there. I don’t know how I did it. Just go have fun. MS: I never insisted on anything. If a kid is not up to a workout, I wouldn’t make him do it. Furthermore, if the kid wanted to do the workout differently, we could do that. I loved it when the kid came to me with his own work-

out (usually more difficult than mine). Try not to say no to a kid and keep in mind, if you wouldn’t do it to a horse, don’t do it to a kid. When Mark became head coach, the facilities at MSU were terrible. There was no outdoor track (they trained at local high schools) and the indoor track was condemned. This added a problematic element to recruiting. As Mark put it, “If you haven’t got a yard, sell them on the park.” When officials of the College finally asked if he would rather have an indoor or an outdoor track, Mark thought, “This is Minnesota, isn’t it?” and the school, with the encouragement of former athletes, like Jim Sheehan and Obie Kipper, built the best indoor track in the state. The aim was to have a track which could hold the indoor national championships (They were held there in 2008 and again in 2012.). Later, a first-rate outdoor track would also be built. MS: You can’t catch fish if you aren’t out fishing. If you want to be a good distance runner, you have to run long distances. The most important thing about doing anything well is to practice doing that thing. For sprinting though, (every rule has an exception) lifting weights is more important than running. MS: Training is all about creating muscle memory. To run a long distance race well, run slow a long time. To run fast, run short distances (20 meters) as fast as you can. Match the workout to what the kid has to do. MS: A distance race is like two

races. In the first half, the kid runs on the watch, letting the field go, if that is the plan; in the second half, the kid runs with his or her heart. You can’t win, of course, without first-rate athletes. Mark recruited constantly. He was always on the lookout for talent. As an example, during a national meet, happening to be seated next to an African gentleman, they struck up a conversation. Mark gave him his card and suggested he call if he knew of anyone who might be interested in coming to MSU. Two years later, the man called and said he had a runner for him. The runner was Denise (pronounced Dennis) Mokaya, who would be the national champion in the 800 meters, second nationally in the mile and an outstanding 10K runner. Over the years, Mark would coach a host of outstanding athletes:

• Joey Keillor: Division II national champion in the steeplechase. “He competed ferociously,” Mark said, “but could not care less about awards.” An outstanding writer himself, Joey is related to the well-known writer. • Kurt Keiser and Doug Keller: Both ran in the Olympic Marathon Trials. “I wouldn’t want to compete against Kurt in anything,” Mark said. “He goes for the jugular.” • Shawn Bernier: He would run the 1500 meters in 3:43 (four minute mile pace). • Pete Bushman: State champion in the two mile in high school, Pete was an outstanding 10K runner and cross country All American. He was a leader of the national champion cross country team. • Jim Dilling: One of the best high jumpers in the country,

Mark Schuck’s Honors • Three time national Division II Coach of the Year (one for indoor track and two cross country) • Four time Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Coach of the Year • Four time North Central Region (NCR) Indoor and two time NCR Men’s Coach of the Year • Three time North Central Conference Indoor Coach of the Year • Five time league outdoor and nine time league cross country Coach of the Year

and in fact, the world (7’6 ½”). Jim won the U.S. national championship in 2007. “I just got the heck out of his way,” Mark said. Jim is currently the head track coach at MSU. • Jerrell Hancock: A top flight sprinter: 6.77, 60 meters; 10.32, 100 meters; 20.49, 200 meters. • Tom Steiner: A miler before Mark’s time as head coach, Tom became a friend of Mark’s. He founded the running apparel company SUB4. The team wore SUB4 apparel. • Marty Benson and Henry Hill: Multi-event running competitors and captains of the MSU track team. Both were killed in Vietnam. • Chris Reed: Division II national indoor and outdoor champion and MSU record holder in the shot put. MS: Coaches in general, and me, in particular, have hurt more kids by overtraining than by undertraining. If there is ever a doubt, do less. This is hard, because the kids are eager to knock off more 400s in 62 seconds, and you love to see that they have the talent and heart for it. But back off. Two days later, they may be limping. MS: Always give the kid a chance to win. Part of being a good coach is knowing in what races to put the kid. You don’t want to put them in poor competition, where there is no challenge, but you don’t want to put them in over their heads, either. I’ve won conference championships by putting kids in races that they’ve never run before. There have been many titles and individual champions. Some highlights: • Nine North Central Conference Championships • First in the Division II national cross country championship in 1988 and second in 1987 • Second in the Division II indoor national track championship in 1989 • 16 top 10 finishes in 25 appearances at the Division II national

cross country meet • Five national champions and many All-American athletes Mark and Jane own a ranch just outside Mankato. Mark keeps a number of horses which his daughters, Angie and Kelly, and grandkids ride. This is a serious undertaking. They ride in national equestrian competitions. For his part, Mark competes in cart competition (the horse performs on an intricate course with a cart and rider). In that sport, he has won a number of international championships. Every year prior to the cross country season, Mark brings the team to live and train for a week at the ranch. They stay in cabins, run twice a day and make their own meals. This happened, as well, following his retirement last year. Mark is very much involved with the track and cross country teams. He attends every meet. “I don’t know if they want me around,” Mark said, “except they ask me to do things, and nobody’s told me to leave.” He also hosts running camps for high school boys. MS: Keep your eye on the bull’s eye. The kid is the bull’s eye. This is not about the coach; it’s about the kid. They have to do the work; they should get the credit for the accomplishment. MS: It is crucial that the kid knows the coach wants him or her to win. The worst thing a coach can do to kids is not to care whether they win or lose. Kids want to win. Don’t go against them. In recent years, Mark developed peripheral artery disease, a painful and debilitating condition. He still gets around fine. His upbeat and positive attitude is undiminished.

It seemed more like a family reunion than a road race to runners who participated in the Minnesota Senior Games (MSG) at Fort Snelling State Park on August 8 and 9, 2014. The faces were of veterans, some of whom had not entered a race in recent years. Others were familiar to anyone who has been around the Minnesota racing scene. No matter what their current running regime, the athletes were all ready to give it their best effort to qualify for the 2015 National Senior Games (NSG), either by placing in their age group or meeting a minimum time standard. The road race events were only one of 21 medal sport competitions that took place in the metro area between August 1 and 9 (plus the triathlon on August 17). Hundreds of athletes who were age 50 and older took part in the MSG. A good number of those athletes also qualified for the NSG that will be held in Minnesota July 3 to 16, 2015. The runners who competed at the 5K and 10K road race events were an eclectic group. Some of the runners, such as Greg Prom and Diane Stoneking, had already competed in the track and field competition. Another track participant, Carol Sankey, had been entered into the 5K race by her daughter who also ran. Thom Weddle was among those that fought his way through a recent injury to qualify for the 2015 NSG in the 5K and 10K races. However, the favorites of the competition were Robert and DeEtte Andersen, both 80 to 84 age group runners. The couple toughed out the warm temperatures to complete both races and qualify for the NSG. As a reward, DeEtte gave Robert a kiss after she crossed the finish line of the 10K race, a moment that brought applause from the runners gathered at the finish line. An athlete from Iowa in the 90 to 94 age group of the track and field competition provided inspiration to other runners. Melvin Larsen set a new record of 18.73 in the 100 meter dash. Larsen also ran the 50 meter dash in 9.98. For complete results of the Minnesota Senior Game competition, visit www.mnseniorgames.com. As the MSG competition came to a close, the question on everyone’s mind was could I still qualify for the 2015 NSG? The answer is yes. According to the NSG website, you can qualify during the year of 2014 (January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2014) at an NSGA State Qualifying Games. Visit the www.nsga.com website and click “State Games” then “State Information” to find specific dates and details about other state games. Just remember to make sure that the other state games allow out-of-state athletes to qualify for the NSG. Good luck athletes, and “Stay Golden.”

RUNNING INSIGHTS

Just Do It BY BRUCE BROTHERS

Sometimes, we all need a kick in the butt. When that happens to me, the solution is generally about opening my mind; some thing or someone will come along at just the right time. Think it over. Few words are more appropriate than Nike’s legendary advertising campaign: Just do it. Former Olympian Carrie Tollefson offers another slogan that generally does the trick: Get after it! Your answer will come to you. Many years ago, 35 miles into my first attempt at a 50 mile trail run, I bogged down to a complete stop. I didn’t know whether to scream or cry. Just then, Twin Cities ultrarunning veteran Bill Beddor ambled along and inquired how I was. “Can’t do it,” I said through gritted teeth. “I’m turning back.” Beddor had been there before and heard it all. He congratulated me for covering 35 miles, then gently invited me to walk with him briefly as we moved forward. I wanted no part of it. He smiled. “What else have you got to do this afternoon?” he wondered. Bill’s common sense trumped my weariness. He and I walked together, ran together and, eventually, made it to the finish line.

When I passed the woman runner at Como, my mind raced back to “The Terry Fox Story” and how many miles and obstacles I had hurdled since seeing the film. I remembered those first runs after years-ago knee surgeries. On this day, I was working my way back from reconstructive ankle surgery. My load seemed suddenly lighter. Another easy lap of Lake Como added not just a mile and a half to my running log, but pleasure and humility to my perspective. I spotted the woman again later in the summer, introduced myself and, although I was pretty sure of the answer, I asked about her gait.

An open mind is as important as strong legs. “A prosthetic,” she said. On a hot afternoon this summer, I was halfway around Lake Como and panting, contemplating veering toward home. Then a woman runner approached from the opposite direction utilizing the odd hop-skip step that was made famous by iconic Canadian runner Terry Fox. Fox, as detailed in a wonderful 1983 movie about his life, ran halfway across Canada on one leg and a prosthesis to raise money to fight cancer. In the years since Fox died of cancer in 1981 at age 22, some prosthetic legs have developed to the point that amputee runners can stride in a relatively normal fashion, hardly noticeable until they draw close. It’s always uplifting to encounter such a runner, of course.

A young mom and wife from St. Paul, she told me her name is Erin. I thanked her for sharing, for her courage and for being an inspiration to me and, I suspect, to many others. I could cite more: former Minnesotan Dick Beardsley running 70 miles a week these days despite two knee replacements; Twin Cities ultrarunner Danny Ripka rebounding from having two knee replacements just this past spring; Twin Cities racewalking guru Gary Westlund continuing his exercise regimen after two hip replacements. Heck, just “Get after it!”
