Summer has passed us by and my hope is you have enjoyed excellent runs, quality races and invigorating hours in our great outdoors. Personally, I am zeroing in on my final president’s letters as I am terming out of my duties as the MDRA board president. It has been a fast 10 year run on the MDRA board, yet seems like yesterday when Rick Recker asked me to serve for a retiring member midterm, only to realize a decade has gone by. As a reflective piece, I am trying to put into perspective what MDRA has accomplished in those 10 years, and in what ways we are different, better, or (is it possible?) worse. I strongly believe the biggest change in MDRA over these years is the strong development of the MDRA Programs. Our marathon training classes, Polar Bear runs, Tracks and Trails, and women’s running programs have all grown to be mainstays in the running community made even more fantastic by the fact these are all put on by volunteer members. Love of the sport. I feel our races have held their own fairly well. We made some difficult decisions dropping Minnehaha Relays and Mom’s Day 5K for lack of volunteers and costs. We also adjusted City of Lakes to a half marathon. We are trying to start a Trail Grand Prix to complement our Road Grand Prix, and continue to put on the Como Relays, Victory Races, City of Lakes Half Marathon, MDRA 15K, Mississippi 10 Miler, MDRA Mudball Classic, Fred Kurz, Ron Daws 25K, MDRA 7 Mile and Lake Johanna 4 Mile. Again all run by our great volunteering members. I think the one unifying theme of my decade on the MDRA Board is the continuing struggle (from a board member’s perspective) to keep membership stable and, hopefully, growing. I constantly heard from past presidents and in my own head we need more members. All on the Board, and most at races and participating in our programs voice what a great bargain MDRA is for only $25 a year. Yet our membership remains slowly decreasing. Ultimately MDRA is only as good as our members –and I think we accomplish fantastic things through our members; but I am consistently

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2015

stumped on why our membership continues to decline. Some have said, ”You are viewing the bell curve” as generations change and new runners are not “joiners”, are seeking “experiences,” not race times or are putting more value on swag than accurate mile markers. I admit I am I dinosaur. I was not always a joiner, nor someone who gave of my time for things I valued. That changed for me as I saw I was living off other’s efforts, not contributing, just taking and that realization really struck me. Granted, I had a lot of time to be reflective when my running time came to an end. I began to see all the people that had come before to create the unique and outstanding running community we enjoy. I didn’t have any great skillset to offer. But I could pass out water at races, tear tags and serve on the Board. These things I could do, so I did. I maintain that MDRA is more than our programs and our races, more than the monetary return members receive. I fondly remember long time member, Marien Bradsher, who moved to North Carolina, but still maintains her membership. Or Mr. Tollefson, way out in Dawson, Minn., who said getting the magazine “connected me with the greater running community, and let me know I wasn’t alone”. I guess that’s what MDRA is and hopefully always will be: a manifestation of the greater Minnesota running community. Enjoy every run.

RUNNING BRIEFS

News and Notes from the Roads, Trails and Track

Greetings Minnesota Runners and the greater Minnesota Running Community by Norm Champ They say 25 years is a long time. I think we’d all agree that that is true - it’s practically a generation! For the last generation of the Minnesota Distance Running Association our group has been blessed to have one stable force, as board members and presidents come and go, as MDRA members move in and out of participation, as races start and cease, as running stores start and stop. We have all relied on that one stable force: the MDRA Office Manager - Heidi Keller Miler. It is my sad duty to inform the greater running community that after a generation of service to MDRA, our beloved “Heidi from MDRA” has provided the Board with her resignation, effective November 30, 2015. Heidi was working at Marathon Sports when she accepted the office manager position back in 1991. At that time she was a very competitive runner – if you were fast back then you may have seen her name around yours on your best days in race results. She has taken the job title Office Manager and moved it into Race Director, Communications Lead, Publications Coordinator, Social Media Facilitator, and Membership/Outreach Liaison. We will all miss her reality based reasoning, vast experience and knowledge of the running scene, and just the fact that she’s such a great person to be around. We love Heidi! Please be aware that this is not in any way a dismissal by MDRA, but a resignation based on Heidi’s personal choice to cut back on her obligations. She’ll still be around, she’ll still offer advice. She may even come to some races or marathon classes. She’s not leaving; she’s retiring from being the stable face of MDRA. The Board has crafted a job description and is preparing for the next phase of MDRA. Our aim is to have a new employee in place and shadowing Heidi for a sufficient time to reveal all the chutes and ladders, secret handshakes and everything that builds up over 25 years. Organizational memory cannot be replaced, it must be passed on. We ask your support during this transition period. My hope and trust is that all reading this are supportive of MDRA and our mission. While I thank all for their past support, we all need to come together and offer an extra effort. Get your running buddy to join, volunteer at a race, do more than you did last year and MDRA will thrive. We all enjoyed the stability and support that Heidi put forth for 25 years. Right now we all need to step up as well.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT BY KEVIN ROSS

JEFFREY WILLIAMS

This month’s featured member is Jeff Williams, a 45 year old IT Systems Administrator and MDRA member since 2014. Jeff will be busy this fall with training in full swing for both the Twin Cities Marathon and the Chicago Marathon! When did you start running and why? I started my running journey back in 2007. I was going through a difficult time in my life and found running to be a great outlet for me. What is your motivation for running? I run to keep myself healthy for my family and to meet the challenge of my running goals. What do you consider to be your favorite race/distance? My favorite race would be the Chicago Marathon with Twin Cities being a very close second. My favorite distance would have to be the half marathon. What is your best memory from a race? My favorite memory was taking on Twin Cities after a DNF the previous year and putting in the work to cross the finish line in 2014. Do you participate in MDRA training programs or races? If so, describe your experience. I’ve been a member of the marathon training programs for about a year and it has been a great experience. Everyone has made me feel welcome and I’ve never felt out of place.

Why would you recommend MDRA to a friend? Among the runners and coaches is a wealth of experience and support. Everyone is a runner when you are a part of MDRA. What is your favorite season for running and why? I love fall / early spring weather. Heat and humidity are not my friends!!! What does a typical week of training consist of for you? I work out three to four times a week. I also like to mix my training with speed, tempo and long run workouts. Strength training is a big part of my training as well.

What is your shoe of choice? I recently switched over to the Altra Paradigm from the Hoka One One. I love the wide toe box, but they look like bowling shoes!!!

What are your favorite pre-race and post-race meals? I will have peanut butter toast and some yogurt for pre-race. For postrace, anything greasy!!!!.

What is your favorite quote? “When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, then you will be successful.” – Eric Thomas

If you’d like to be featured in our Member Spotlight, contact Heidi at runminnesota@gmail.com.

What are your interests outside of running? Trying to keep up with my three and four year old kids. Not easy at all!!

NUTRITION

How Does Your Fare Compare? BY FARRAH STEWART, MS, RD, CSSD, LDN Ever wonder what the elite’s plate looks like? To be so great, they must be doing something we aren’t, right? You might be surprised at how similar some of the greatest runners of our time’s eating habits compare to your very own. Compiled below are nutrition insights from renowned runners Shalane Flanagan, Mo Farah, Deena Kastor, Kara Goucher and Scott Jurek. Photos courtesy of Photorun.net

Shalane Flanagan

Mo Farah

Well known for her American records in the 3000 meters, 5000 meters, 10,000 meters and 15K road race, how does Shalane stay ahead of the competition? According to an interview with Women’s Running, Shalane sticks to a “whole foods” diet regimen, except for the occasional doughnut splurge. • Breakfast – oatmeal with fruit and nuts and coffee, followed by Gatorade • Mid-morning snack – apple or banana • Lunch – hearty turkey sandwich with fruit and yogurt with granola • Dinner – she states “I’m more creative. I don’t limit myself for dinner – it’s whatever I’m craving, like good Mexican food or sushi.” • Indulgence – a large doughnut after a long, hard run

What does a double Olympic champion eat to stay on top? When asked by BBC’s Good Food, Farah revealed his nutrition habits while training for the Olympics: • Breakfast (7 a.m.) – coffee and cereal • Lunch (12 p.m.) – “I'm not really a big eater of large meals - more several small little plates during the day. But if I had a lunch, it tended to be pasta, steamed vegetables and grilled chicken.” • Dinner (8 p.m.) – “Dinner would be the same again - pasta, steamed vegetables and grilled chicken. I realize it doesn't sound too exciting, but for someone doing my pursuit it was absolutely the right thing to eat. It's an exciting life I lead!” • Superfood/beverage of choice – coffee. “I couldn’t live without it,” he states. • Moderation is key – In celebration of his victory, Farah proclaimed to having a Byron burger (his first burger in over a year) and then “got back on track” in regards to his nutrition because “the season wasn't over and I couldn't afford to go off the rails with other races coming up. I am used to a whole food diet, and if I get a need for sugar time or again, a little dark chocolate does the fix.” • Advice to aspiring athletes – “Maintain a healthy balance between carbs and protein but always be careful on the carb intake, or it will ultimately slow you down.”

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2015

Kara Goucher

Deena Kastor

The 2007 world championships bronze medalist in the 10,000 meter run, the 37 year old sponsored by Oiselle, Skechers, Nuun and Soleus watches, spends the week leading up to a marathon hydrating and building muscle stores with carbohydrates, lean proteins and vegetables. According to Competitor Magazine, below is how she nutritionally trained for success at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials: • Breakfast - Banana, instant apple cinnamon oatmeal, a couple of cups of coffee • Post morning run – Nuun hydration and water • Lunch – club sandwich • Dinner – rice, grilled chicken and vegetables • Indulgence – Nachos after a marathon

One of the greatest distance runners alive today, Kastor, 42, holds the American record in both the marathon and the half marathon, and is one of only two U.S. women ever to medal in the Olympic Marathon. According to Women’s Running and Women’s Health Magazine, she states “I typically don't get in the habit of eating the same things. Variety is much more fun - unless you're talking about coffee.” • Breakfast – coffee and a piece of fruit with any of the following: eggs and toast, bagel with lox and cream cheese, and French toast. • Lunch and Dinner – “I always try to get in a good balance of protein and carbohydrates with some veggies or fruit for vitamins and minerals.” • Snack - “ I always have Snickers Marathon Bars on hand so I can have a well-balanced bar within a short time after working out [Kastor is a spokesperson for Marathon Bars]. My favorite is Caramel Nut Rush because it's high in protein. I carry them with me so I can begin refueling quickly after a workout.” • Indulgence – “I enjoy cooking and eating, and nothing is off limits. I work out hard twice a day, and I'm a full-time mom of a speedy toddler. It doesn't seem fair to add more discipline to my day, so food has always been fun for me. We eat a lot of nutritious foods, but enjoy fine chocolate, well-made pastries, and wine from all over the world.” • Four kitchen staples: - Eggs: “because they are a great protein source” - Grass fed beef and buffalo “because they are great for getting in iron, especially being a female runner” - Spinach: Deena states she “adds spinach to all my food (including in smoothies, hamburger meats, salads, etc.) for an extra burst of nutrients.” - Pink lady apples: These are Kastor’s favorite apples that she adds to smoothies or eats with peanut butter. “I feel they give me necessary vitamins and minerals, and was always told ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’.”

Scott Jurek According to Competitor Magazine, the vegan, 41 year old, seven time winner of the Western States 100 and American record holder in the 24 hour run proclaims to fuel before, during and after an ultra event with the following: • Pre-race dinner - two servings tempeh tacos with corn tortillas, one to two cups brown or white rice, 10-12 ounces water, three ounces vegan dark chocolate • Race day breakfast – three to four servings of a smoothie, six to eight ounces soy or coconut milk yogurt mixed with two tablespoons hemp protein powder, banana, 10-12 ounces water • Race fuel - 20-30 ounces water or Clif Shot electrolyte drink per hour; one Clif Shot gel or three Clif Bloks every 20-30 minutes • Post race - 20 minutes after: 75 grams Clif Shot electrolyte drink and 15-20 grams of brown rice and pea protein powder mixed with 30 ounces water, banana, one Clif Kit’s Organic bar • 45-60 minutes later – bean and rice burrito or hummus wrap • Post race treat – Carob chia pudding

Take Home Notes So as you can see, although nutrition patterns vary depending upon the length of their specialized distance (from 3000 meters to ultramarathons), consumption of infrequent, small meals throughout the day is a common theme. Additionally, coffee is quite the staple, as well as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and the occasional indulgent treat every once in a while (all things in moderation!). By pairing their nutritionally sound habits with adequate rest and hydration, these athletes keep going strong to serve as inspirations for us all.

GEAR

Citizen Runner Product Review BY NATHAN CAMPEAU After a long hiatus, the Citizen Runner Product Reviewer is back! You are probably asking yourself, “How have I been able to confidently purchase running related gear over the past year?” Good question. I have no idea how you have continued to make uninformed financial running decisions without my advice. Never fear, I’m here to get your spending back on track.

Soleus SG100 GPS Fit Watch First up, that “essential” piece of technology for nearly every runner: the GPS watch, specifically the Soleus SG100 GPS Fit Watch (classic black). Although Garmin has the GPS market locked up to the point that the name “Garmin” is nearly synonymous with GPS watches (in fact, during the testing of this watch, I kept referring to the watch as “my Garmin”) there are, in fact, other players in the GPS market. This was actually my first GPS running experience. I am NOT a Garmin runner. I certainly have nothing against GPS watches, and although I tease my fellow runners who do laps in the parking lot at the end of our runs to get their goal distance in to the hundredth of a mile, I find myself asking my running companions with GPS watches our pace or distance several times during and after our long runs. You may call me a hypocrite, but I prefer to think of myself as an onion. So I was secretly excited to get the opportunity to test out the Soleus GPS watch. And as a Soleus (non-GPS) watch wearer, I was particularly excited to try their GPS watch as I thought it might be easier for me to use given my familiarity with and preference for Soleus watches. I tried the Soleus GPS watch for several months in cross country ski outings (and races) and hundreds of miles of running. My take on the watch is decidedly mixed. From a functional perspective, I found it difficult to use at times, with the GPS function turning off just before I needed

8

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2015

it (in fact, I ran a 5K without the watch because it turned off moments before the gun went off ). It occasionally cut out parts of runs, and it was surprisingly hard to set the time on it. Using the watch in the more traditional way (i.e., without GPS) was really difficult, even though I’m very familiar with Soleus watches and their features/quirks. I also found the display annoyingly small and hard to read during the run, unlike the Soleus non-GPS watches which have large faces. I was probably successful in recording about 60 percent of my runs over several months, and then I did find uploading the runs to Strava (which then could sync with my iPhone) quite easy. The data the watch collected was fun to peruse on the Strava app. Like my data driven friends, I found reliving my best runs and skis mile by mile to be oddly thrilling. I discussed my frustrations with the watch with my running companions. They remarked that as a first time GPS watch user I should be careful in my criticism of this particular brand, as I have no experience with other GPS watches, such as Garmin. In fact, one friend threatened to write a review of the Citizen Runner Product Reviewer (yours truly); it would not have been a flattering review. Fair (yet harsh) point, so I decided to enlist the assistance of a seasoned Garmin user. My Garmin friend (we’ll call him Al) tried the watch for a few weeks. Being more technologically and GPS watch savvy than I, Al was able to get the watch to work, but as a loyal Garmin user he was frustrated by the different user experience provided by Soleus. Bottom line, the Soleus GPS watch is a surprisingly inexpensive ($50) GPS watch that is probably a good introductory GPS watch for a newbie GPS user with a little bit of patience. Garmin users will likely want to stick with what they’re familiar with; nothing exotic here to enhance the user experience. As for me, I happily returned to my old watch, ditching the GPS and the excess data altogether.

361° Sensation Shoe

Next up, the piece of running equipment that really IS essential to every runner (sorry, GPS users), the running shoe. I tested a relatively new running shoe to the market, the 361° Sensation. 361° may be better known (at least locally) for signing Kevin Love (if only the Wolves could have done that, too), but they’re becoming an increasing presence in the running shoe industry. 361° imported a lot of their management from Asics and their shoes are often described by other reviewers and local shoe stores as Asics clones. Since about 95 percent of my shoe purchases in the past 15 years have been Asics, I was eager to try these shoes out, and I picked out a pair of the Sensations. The first thing I noticed about the Sensations is that they felt like throwback Asics (2050s, perhaps). The shoe’s styling is not unattractive, but not full of needless adornment. If you want to look fast, do not buy these shoes (I would expect future offerings to be flashier, however). I have put several hundred miles on these shoes in the past few months, and other than the smell (they’re sitting on my kitchen table as I write this review…a little too close to nose level) they are in great condition with a lot of life left in them. I will probably put 600 to 800 miles on them before I send them into retirement. The only downside about the shoes is that they are a little on the heavy side. They’re listed at 11.1 ounces, which is a little heavier than some of their competitors (Asics DS Trainer comes in at nine ounces, although the GT-2000 is similar at 11 ounces, all have a similar nine millimeter drop). Bottom line, these are sturdy, comfortable trainers that I would recommend to anyone who runs in Asics GT-2000’s, DS Trainers, or similar shoes. I don’t plan to run any races with the Sensations, but I will be putting a large percentage of my 2015 training mileage on these comfortable shoes. If you want a quality shoe at a competitive price, you should check them out.

Nuun Electrolyte Tablets I really thought I had tried it all when it came to electrolyte drinks, and that they were all the same, or could be easily modified to be the same. My preference for years has been Gatorade mixed half and half with water. Then I tried Nuun and my taste buds were opened. My first experience with Nuun was while skiing the American Birkebeiner this past winter. Warm Nuun was the race’s beverage of choice. Warm electrolyte drink is not a great introduction to any new beverage,

but I kept my electrolytes in balance and was intrigued enough to try Nuun afterwards. Nuun are drop in tablets that are packed with electrolytes, but not calories, with only eight calories per tablet. I tried out several flavors: Tri Berry, Lemon Lime, Citrus Fruit and Orange, and found them all quite delicious. I used Nuun (and continue to) quite extensively on long skis, 80 mile bike rides, and long trail runs. I have nothing but glowing reviews for Nuun as I have become a complete convert. I find the electrolyte balance to be perfect for me. I sweat a lot and need constant replenishment of water and salts. For best results I have a bottle of water with Nuun before a long run and then one per hour. The drop in tablet form is really convenient; whether I’m refilling my bottle of water at a gas station or a drinking fountain, I can easily turn any bottle of water into an effective electrolyte source. The only thing I find annoying about Nuun is that as the tablet dissolves, it creates gases that pressurize the water bottle, causing the bottle to spray Nuun infused water out when first opened. I have sprayed Nuun all over the ceiling of a friend’s car, on my running companions and most often, all over my face. It’s often funny, but mostly a little annoying. Again, this is sort of a user error issue. The simple solution is opening the bottle into my mouth to catch the spray, but I usually forget. Bottom line, I love Nuun, and so should you.

Zensah Compression Calf Sleeves Like the GPS watch, this is another one of those products that I have never used, and never thought I would use. But I have many a running friend who swears by compression sleeves or socks for increased blood flow during runs and for post run recovery. I tried the gray version of the Zensah Compression Calf Sleeves (I see online that they have a camo version…if only!). I ran a singletrack hill workout with the sleeves, and once I got over the feeling that my legs were going to overheat, I quickly adjusted and found them quite comfortable. I can’t honestly say that I noticed any difference in performance, but a HUGE benefit was that while I was running through an overgrown stretch of trail, the sleeves protected my calves from the grasses and burdock. Let’s face it, in this era of Lyme and other tick borne diseases, who amongst us doesn’t get squeamish running through overgrown vegetation brushing against your legs? I then tried the calf sleeves as a post long run recovery aid. After a particularly hard 18 mile workout, I donned the sleeves for the balance of the day as I lounged around the house in recovery mode. Again, I’m not sure I noticed the difference in recovery, but I found the sleeves really comfortable. I will probably wear them again, particularly as the weather gets a little colder. Bottom line, if you feel the need for, or already prefer, running with compression calf sleeves, the Zensah’s are a comfortable and potentially stylish (if you get the camo!) way to go.

ON THE RUN

In Defense of the DNF BY NATHAN LECKBAND

O

n the morning of this year’s Med City Marathon, the possibility of the dreaded DNF loomed large. “Did not finish,” dropping, quitting—all words and phrases denoting failure. My first experience with a DNF came in high school. Young and inexperienced, “DNF” had yet to enter my vocabulary. Back then we called it “dropping” for dropping out of a race. I had my sights set on qualifying for the Nebraska state track meet in both the 3200 meters and the 1600 meters. As a runner from a small Lutheran school in Northeast Nebraska, the competition in the class D district meet wasn’t elite—running under 10:45 in the 3200m would be enough, and a 1600m time of 4:55 or better would be fast enough to make it to the state meet. In Nebraska, the top two finishers in running events earned a ticket to the state meet. Third place finishers had an outside chance if their times were the two fastest in all the districts. After a miserable finish in the 3200m on a hot, humid day, I still managed to finish second in the 3200m. The 1600m came next—a cou-

10

ple hours later and nearly ten degrees hotter, I still hoped to finish in the top two. Before the race started the Gatorade I’d attempted to rehydrate with exited my stomach in a metal trashcan near the track. Exhausted and dehydrated, I only made it two of the four laps before my coach told me to drop from the race. I wouldn’t drop a race again for almost ten years. The weather at the 2011 Yukon Days was chilly, foggy, and the footing on the snow was anything but firm. I’d won the six mile snowshoe race and was hoping to finish well in the three mile foot race. My IT band had other plans. It held firm during the snowshoe race, but the slipping and sliding during the three mile footrace had it screaming for relief. After trying for a quarter mile, I turned around and walked back to the start to wait for a couple running buddies to finish. Scott and Adam, tough runners, had nothing but kind words to say—they had dropped races before and knew that sometimes a DNF was the best decision a runner could make. The 2015 Med City Marathon was my first DNF at the 42 kilometer distance. The night before I ran the 5K. My lower legs had been

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2015

giving me issues, and during the 5K I went out too fast. After running the first mile in 4:57, the taste of copper in the back of my mouth, the pain in my lower legs and the subsequent nausea and respiratory pain left me wondering if I’d be able to finish my pacing assignment of 3:35 for the next day’s marathon. Marathon morning I was more optimistic. I had already told the pace director that there was a chance I wouldn’t finish. Between March 14 and the Med City Marathon on May 24, I was a pacer for three half marathons and a

marathon as well as racing the MDRA Lake Johanna 4 Mile, the MDRA 7 Mile, and the Fred Kurz 10 mile. Over trained, exhausted, and sore, I was still hopeful that maintaining a pace of just over eight minutes per mile for 26.2 miles was still within reach. Since 2010 I paced over a dozen half marathons along with a handful of full marathons. They ranged from rainy and cool (the 2011 Brainerd Jaycees Run for the Lakes Marathon), to hot and miserable (the 2011 Minneapolis Marathon). The 2015 Med City Marathon weather wasn’t ideal, but the over-

cast sky and the reasonably cool temperature would make for a decent race. After the first few miles, I was feeling even more optimistic. I’d met a couple friends at the start and one of their sisters even carried the sign for me for a while. Runners shared their stories with me—always inspiring—and I shared some of my running stories with them. By mile 16 it was clear to me that I wouldn’t be able to finish in 3:35, my assigned pace. I stopped at an aid station waiting for the runners in my group to loop back around so I could rejoin them. Unfortunately, taking a break and cutting the course still weren’t enough. I ran 23 miles that day, dropped my 3:35 pacing sign, and dropped out of the race. Physically, emotionally, and mentally exhausted, my race was over, but my running season wasn’t. The decision to finish a race or not is personal, and specific, to each runner. Dan LaPlante, an experienced ultrarunner, has dropped out of at least seven races. “There is always an excuse,” he said. “But in reality I believe it’s 90 percent mental. When you’re hurt, tired or sick you always have to choose to not go on. I think anyone can finish these things if you actually come prepared and just fight through the uncomfortableness.” Though LaPlante has finished marathons, 100 mile, 50 mile and 24 hour races, he has dropped more 100 milers than he’s finished. For an ultrarunner, this is not unusual. Most marathoners know that if something small goes wrong, it can turn into something big during a marathon. When something goes wrong in a 100 mile race, it can turn into something really big. LaPlante’s “excuses” for dropping races have included a pulled groin, dehydration and a wicked fall that took a chunk from his knee during the Ozark 100 Mile. “I got sick from eating Domino’s pizza during the race,” he said. “[I] couldn’t stomach anything, and quit at mile 80.”

Starting a race ill, fatigued, injured or in poor weather conditions can also lead to a DNF. Juli Johnson, Eagan Parks and Recreation Director, knows the feeling. An experienced marathoner, pace team leader, and mother of two, Johnson has run almost 100 marathons. “I dropped out of several races early in my running career,” she said. “I was more of an all or nothing runner back then. As my goals have changed, I don't worry about this much anymore. I've become OK with finishing with a slower time, if it means not being injured or getting sick.” Olympian Carrie Tollefson has only dropped out of a handful of races in her 26 year career. “It was my fourth race in my fourth country and I went out and just didn't have it. My agent yelled at me to stop, and [said] we will try again tomorrow at a better race. So I did [drop the race], and ended up winning a race the next day in a new PR.” Sometimes avoiding a DNF means not starting in the first place. Starting a race injured means a high likelihood of not only not finishing, but exacerbating the injury. “That’s a big problem,” said LaPlante. “My advice is to not do that.” “I like to tempt fate with injury and illness,” said Johnson. “I've also planned marathons as 20 mile training runs and give myself "permission" to stop after 20 miles.” But don’t get the idea that Johnson’s a wimp. “I had an awful marathon where my feet were blistered badly by the half,” she said. “It was painful to finish, but a couple of Marathon Maniacs stayed with me to give me company and help me get to the end. I joined the Maniacs soon after as a way to return the favor to other struggling runners.” Since then, Johnson has run marathons in 49 states, and helped countless runners meet their goals by setting the pace in numerous marathons and half marathons. Tollefson has never gone into a race thinking she wouldn’t finish. “I never let myself think that way,” she said. But in 2009, while trying to make the World Championship

team, injuries got the better of her. “I tried so hard to make that team, but my foot just couldn't take it. [I] couldn’t put pressure on my foot for a week after it,” she said. “Not smart!” So besides avoiding a race when you’re ill or injured, how can you avoid the dreaded DNF? “A belt buckle and/or beer at the finish line usually keeps me going,” said LaPlante, though I suspect his personality and desire to complete races of 50 kilometers or more plays a factor. Tollefson, an Olympian, mother and journalist, knows the things you tell yourself during a race matter. “When the body doesn't feel good or you are having an off day, you need to focus on the good and try and make the best of it. [Positive self-talk] has helped me through some pretty rough patches. Dropping out of races really becomes a habit and a really hard one to break.” Perhaps the biggest difference between Tollefson and LaPlante are the races they’ve run. Tollefson, a middle distance runner in college who ran the 1500 meters in the 2004 Olympic Summer Games, didn’t have to deal with dehydration, stomach issues or a chunk of flesh ripped from her knee. During the Rocky Raccoon 100 Mile race, LaPlante was injured in a fall. “I got spooked by a person on the trail with a chainsaw, fell on a tree and took a chunk out of my knee. I could not stop the bleeding, so I quit at mile 75 and went to the emergency room.” Yikes. Tollefson, on the other hand, was involved in a massive pileup at the 2005 Prefontaine Classic, a race she didn’t finish. “I had my shoe taken off and was thrown into the infield,” she said. So what happens when you DNF? I was proud—in a strange way, my drop from the Med City Marathon felt like an accomplishment. There was a chance I wouldn’t finish the race due to injury and exhaustion, and I didn’t. It was my first drop from a marathon, and though I hope it will be the last, I now know how it feels.

Of her first DNF, Johnson said it best: “The first time I DNF'd in a goal race I, thought the world would end. Amazingly, the sun still came up the next day. Approximately five people in the whole world knew that I DNF'd, and likely only my husband and I cared that I didn't finish. Today, I tend to ‘finish no matter what’ by walking, if need be. However, no race is worth risking injury or illness. The sun will come up and there will be another race next week, next month or next year.” In my next marathon this October, I’m planning on finishing. I’m planning on setting a personal best. I’m planning on running well. But if an illness, injury or family member requires more attention than a race, a PR, or even a finish might not be possible. Like Johnson said: there will be other races—days when the weather is cooler, the legs are healthier and the body, mind and spirit are stronger.

Running Inside Prison Walls Minnesota’s marathon in the round BY CANDY PATRIN

R

unners looking for a Minnesota marathon can choose from about a dozen possibilities each year. The state’s marathons offer a variety of options—indoors, outdoors, trails, pavement, country or urban. It is unlikely, however, that there will ever be another marathon like the “Marathon in the Round” which had a 10 year run at the Minnesota Correctional Facility (MCF)-Stillwater beginning on October 30, 1983. During the course of its history, the race was held on various dates in the summer and fall in weather conditions that ranged from uncomfortably warm to a chill filled snowy day. The race, consisting of 112 laps (106 laps the first year before the course was measured with a wheel) around the prison yard within the confines of the walls, drew participants from the inmate ranks as well as the running community. Runners who completed 55 laps or more were eligible for a t-shirt. Race volunteers came from the inmate population. Lap counters were responsible for watching one or more runners and kept track by circling the laps on a sheet of paper. As a race progressed, this sometimes sparked a little side competition between counters about whose runner(s) would win. In addition to the counters, inmates also worked the

aid station with refreshments provided by the prison kitchen.

Grass root beginnings As described by MDRA member and race director Mary Croft, who worked at the prison in Stillwater as a nurse, the idea for a marathon was a grass roots effort that grew out of an interest by some inmates in her running escapades as well as those of a few other staff members. Croft distributed medications to the inmates and used that interaction time to talk about running to those who showed an interest. One of those inmates often said he would have gone “crazy” if Croft had not rekindled his interest in running.

The philosophy within the prison system back then was different from today, according to Kent Grandlienard, who was a guard at Stillwater at the time of the marathon. He says that up until the early 1990s local sports teams (football, softball, basketball, boot hockey, e.g.) were invited inside the prison walls for games with the inmates. One businessman, Greg Benson, the retired president and chief executive officer of the First State Bank in Bayport, Minn., recalls playing fast pitch softball within the prison walls. The MCF-Stillwater also hosted religious celebrations with members of the community as

“Schuchardt recalls a few other details, such as the lack of hills and the numerous water stops, one every loop. He appreciated having lap counters to keep the runners on track. “Every lap we ran by a short bleacher section of smokers and I had to hold my breath,” says Schuchardt.

guests. “It [running] was just one more event,” says Grandlienard. Croft says the staff was supportive of the effort to get the inmates interested in fitness and gave her the approval to host a couple of races. The idea was to schedule a few shorter races and build up to the marathon later in the outdoor running season. This gave the inmates the opportunity to train for the longer distance. To motivate the inmates and provide them with training tools, Croft enlisted the help of some outside coaches. One year MDRA member Bill Wenmark, the founder and president of ALARC, visited the prison to offer warm up and stretching tips as well as training advice. Another time, Croft brought in the track coach from a local area college. Croft also received some donations from the local community businesses for expenses such as the rental of a timing clock, buying trophies and other race necessities.

Generating race interest Croft used her network of contacts within the running community to get the word out about the marathon and other races. Some of the regular outside participants came from her affiliation with the St. Croix Valley Runners and the Stately Strider running clubs. High profile runners who came out to support the marathon included Dick Beardsley as well as Alan Page, former professional football player and recently retired Minnesota Supreme Court Judge. Page ran alongside his wife, Diane, who reportedly might have received more attention from the inmates than her husband. Diane Page, executive director

of the Page Education Foundation, says that she and Alan remember it was very hot that year, which might be why they ran for about an hour and a half, stopping a little beyond the halfway point of the marathon. She says it was a positive experience. “The fledgling group of inmates seemed very happy for us to be there in support of them,” recalls Diane. Dennis Barker, a familiar name to runners and currently the coach of Team USA Minnesota, was contacted by Croft to generate some publicity and interest in the event. At the time, Barker, who has a background in journalism, was publisher and editor of a local running magazine as well as the host of a short radio program about running that aired Sunday nights on WCCO-AM. Barker approached the editor of Picture, the Minneapolis Star Tribune’s Sunday magazine back then, and proposed a human interest article about the marathon inside the prison walls. The editor agreed, and Barker, along with a photographer friend, Mark Jorgenson, went to the prison in the summer of 1984 to cover the second annual Marathon in the Round. Thinking back, Barker says it was a sunny morning that grew to be pretty warm as the day progressed. From the outside, the prison location close to the St. Croix River offered beautiful vistas. “But walking into the prison and hearing the large metal doors clank shut and lock behind me was a sobering sound and a little mood altering,” says Barker. When he finally arrived at the prison yard where the race was held, Barker felt more comfortable

and was able to focus on the event. He talked with several inmate runners, as well as support crew and spectators while giving Jorgenson direction on taking pictures for the article. Being onsite for over five hours was a long day, even for spectators. Even so, Barker says the mood of encouragement and celebration for those who finished was obvious. Several of the inmate runners commented to Barker on the importance of running to their physical and mental well-being, something that is universally shared by runners no matter where they get in their miles.

Community runners Sue Olsen, MDRA member, is no stranger to the marathon distance. In 1992, she was looking for a summer marathon for a training run when Croft talked to her about being one of the community runners at the Marathon in the Round. Olsen was familiar with looped courses because of her background with 24 and 48-hour events and was not concerned with the number of laps. She even convinced a friend of hers, Gary Korby, to sign up for the “training” run with her. Korby, who now lives in Florida, remembers Olsen telling him the race was only $5 and he would also get a tshirt. It was after a little prompting on his part that Olsen mentioned the venue. Korby says it was his first attempt at 26.2 miles, and he finished just under four hours despite a few added loops (there was a slight discrepancy between Korby’s count and his lap counter). When Olsen and Korby entered the prison, they went through a

security check. Olsen learned that as the only female runner she would need an escort to use the restroom inside the prison during the race. The facilities for the men were outside. Olsen says she made up her mind right then that she would not stop for any bathroom breaks during the marathon. Olsen remembers the lap counters introducing themselves to the runners before the race. “The sports drink was Kool-Aid, and my lap counter called it ‘bug juice,’” says Olsen. She also admits to wondering what she had signed up for when some of the non-runner inmates who were exercising in the area made suggestive comments. “My lap counter kept them in line,” says Olsen. When the leading inmate dropped out of the marathon after 100 laps due hyperthermia, the only runners left were from the community, and the inmates began cheering for Olsen. At that point, Olsen says she “got serious” about the race. Her closest competitor was another MDRA member, Ed “Fast Eddie” Rousseau. “I ended up running a PR [3:06:21] and winning the race,” says Olsen. “I had never been given so much encouragement from so many men.” Rousseau has his own memories of the final laps in the event when he was in the lead and Olsen passed him. “I got heavy legs and when Sue started gaining on me late in the race, I had no fans and she had then all,” says Rousseau. “So they got their excitement when Sue finally caught me.” Rousseau remembers several details about the marathon, such as the $5 entry fee. The community runners were given pre-race instructions to avoid talking to the inmates and decline any potential requests to contact anyone on the outside or accept anything they might want to give you. “It was called the annual Marathon in the Round, but should have been called ‘Race in the Square’ for the four square corners,” jokes Rousseau. There were a couple of reasons why Rousseau decided to enter the

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2015

13

Marathon in the Round. He learned that Olsen and another ultra runner, Tim Brown, were going to be there. Plus Rousseau had been doing some volunteer work at another correctional facility where he refereed basketball and umpired softball games, as well as conducting sobriety meetings. Rousseau says that he enjoyed the experience and all of its uniqueness. Instead of a gunshot at the start of the race, Croft gave a verbal command. The runners wore bib numbers and the top male and female finishers ran through a tape at the finish that was a long piece of toilet tissue. “Mary Croft brought a great physical fitness and running incentive into that place with a reward to run a marathon with some outside runners,” says Rousseau. As for some of the other races within the prison walls, Stillwater resident Pete Schuchardt was one of the community runners who regularly entered the other distances. One year he managed a PR in the 10K on the same looped course. Schuchardt says he was running a lot of races at the time, including six to eight marathons a year. Schuchardt recalls a few other details, such as the lack of hills and the numerous water stops, one every loop. He appreciated having lap counters to keep the runners on track. “Every lap we ran by a short bleacher section of smokers and I had to hold my breath,” says Schuchardt. Schuchardt said the inmates seemed to enjoy the interaction with the outsiders. “My impression was that most of them would not be there given different circumstances in their lives and if they had a few breaks,” says Schuchardt.

The Marathon in the Round ended after 10 years when a new warden came on board. At about the same time, Croft also made some career path changes and left the prison employment ranks. Even so, the memories of the marathon and other races within the prison walls are still talked about today. Grandlienard, the former guard at MCF-Stillwater, was the deputy warden at MCF-Oak Park Heights in 2008. It was at a dedication for the Frank W. Wood Religious Resource Center at that facility that he had a chance meeting with Alan Page. As Grandlienard recalls, he mentioned the Marathon in the Round to Page who said that people do not believe it when he tells them that he and his wife ran inside the prison walls. The inmates who chose to run appreciated the races and running experience. One of those inmate runners had at one time been transferred to a minimum security facility at Lino Lakes only to learn that he was the only person there who liked to run. He asked for a transfer back to Stillwater. For Croft, the races were a way of motivating the inmates to do something positive for themselves during a period of their lives when so much was not in their control. In January 1992, Runner’s World (RW) recognized Croft’s contributions to running with the Bob Rodale Golden Shoe Award. In a RW article that named Croft as the recipient of the award, one inmate shared his thoughts about running inside the prison walls…”Mary changed my life. Running became my freedom.”

RUNNING INSIGHTS

Not even to the river yet BY SCOTT PARKER where I run to undo the burdens of this complicated life —bisecting my line a buck, three, four small points, bounding down the avenue en route for return. Strangely, I see, we’re in this together as he turns east and parallels me, misshaped shadow to my misshaped man. Mississippi bound, we sense there is sense there, shadows in search of the tangible sustaining. A dog barks. The buck breaks down an alley. I stop. Humans appear on the scene with cameras. There is nothing more to see, but the river the river the river is still there yet.
