Staying Busy! Ahh, February! For such a short month, it sure is jampacked with events, celebrations and holidays! We even have an extra day in February, as 2020 is a Leap Year! Say “Hello” to Feb. 29 on your calendars! Did you know we celebrate all of the following in February: Groundhog Day (Feb. 2), Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14), Presidents’ Day (Feb. 17), and Mardi Gras (Feb. 25). Several of our stories have fun activities to celebrate these holidays! Also, February is American Heart Month and Black History Month! Our recipe and activities this month support a healthy heart. Check out the book reviews and calendar for ways to celebrate Black History Month. And just in case you need a few more fun things sprinkled into your month, don’t forget about these lesser known days (I swear, I didn’t make these up!): National Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day (Feb. 1), National Tater Tot Day (Feb. 2), National Kite-Flying Day (Feb. 8), National Pizza Day (Feb. 9), International Day of Women and Girls in Science (Feb. 11), National Walk Your Dog Day (Feb. 22), and International Polar Bear Day (Feb. 27). HEALTHY BITES WITH TGMC | BY MICHELLE BRICENO, MS, RD, LDN

CHILI PEPPERS

STUFFED GREEN BELL PEPPER SOUP

Chili peppers are tiny flavor boosters that also contain amazing nutrients. They are high in vitamin C, antioxidants, and beta carotene, to help keep our immune system strong. Peppers are low in calories, sodium, contain fiber and are great ways to flavor food. They contain a chemical compound known as capsaicin, which is the reason peppers are spicy. Did you know that the spice or capsaicin is located in the ribs of the chili peppers, not the seeds? Always handle peppers with care because the oil can irritate your eyes and nose. If you need a way to cool down the burn try milk, bread, or rice. The most common peppers include Anaheim, banana peppers, bell peppers, cayenne peppers, chipotle, habanero, jalapeno, poblano, and serrano.

INGREDIENTS • 3 cups cooked brown rice • 1 lb. lean ground turkey • 1 cup chopped green bell pepper • 1 cup diced onion • 3 cloves garlic, chopped • 2 cans (14.5 oz each) diced tomatoes • 1 3/4 cup tomato sauce • 2 cups low sodium chicken broth • 1/2 tsp. dried marjoram

DIRECTIONS STEP 1 In a large pot, brown ground turkey on high heat. STEP 2 Drain fat and reduce to medium-low heat. Add peppers, onions and garlic. STEP 3 Cook for 5 minutes on low heat. STEP 4 Add tomatoes, tomato sauce, chicken broth, and marjoram. Cover and simmer on low heat for 30 minutes. STEP 5 Serve 1 1/2 cups soup with 1/2 cup cooked brown rice per bowl. Makes 6 servings.

HUNTER ROSS BASEBALL • EAST HOUMA WARRIORS

When did you start playing sports? I was 5 when I started t-ball with TPR, but have been playing at home for as long as I can remember. Why did you decide to give baseball a try? I have always been throwing a ball and swinging a bat. How often do you practice? During the season, about 3-4 times a week. In the off season, whenever I get the chance to throw the ball with my older brother outside. What have you learned about teamwork? We win as a team and we lose as a team. We have to work together if we want a shot at winning. How do your teammates make practice fun? We cheer each other on and push each other to do our best. What is the best part of a game? When I hit a homerun or don’t get struck out

SYNERGY BANK PRESENTS SYNERGY CENTS WITH PENNY D. PELICAN

HONORING OUR NATION’S PRESIDENTS Hello, friends! Each year on the third Monday of February, we celebrate Presidents’ Day to honor the achievements of all U.S. presidents, past and present. Presidents’ Day was originally two holidays celebrating the birthdays of our first president, George Washington (February 22), and our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln (February 12). The two holidays were combined and moved to the third Monday in February in 1971. Presidents’ Day is often celebrated with patriotic celebration and remembrance. Another way we honor both Washington and Lincoln is by having their portraits on our money. Washington is featured on the $1 bill as well as the quarter. Lincoln’s portrait can be found on the $5 bill as well as the penny.

Microprinting E PLURIBUS UNUM is written at the top of the shield and USA is repeated between each column.

S.T.E.A.M. ACTIVITY WITH HOUMA FAMILY DENTAL

HEART ERUPTION Turn a classic experiment with vinegar and baking soda into a work of art! The chemical reaction between the two common household ingredients never gets old. When an acid and a base mix, they form a gas called carbon dioxide. Here the vinegar is the acid and the baking soda is the base. In addition to watching the hearts erupt, watching the colors combine to create one of kind patterns will make you want to do it again and again.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: • Watercolor paper • Heart pattern (we used a cookie cutter) • Two foil lined baking sheets • Baking soda • Spoon

Using the shape of heart for Valentines Day, this easy afternoon project transforms into a keepsake that you’ll treasure forever and it’s actually frame worthy!

• Vinegar • Medicine dropper • Muffin tin or small cups • Food coloring • Optional for framing: picture frame, plain white sheet of paper and glue stick

WHAT TO DO: STEP 1 Use a heart pattern to trace hearts on the watercolor paper and cut them out. Place the cut hearts onto a foil lined baking sheet for easy clean up. STEP 2 Using a spoon, generously sprinkle baking soda over all of the hearts. (Remember the more baking soda, the bigger the eruption!) STEP 3 Fill each muffin tin, or small cups, with a 1/4 cup vinegar and add your choice of food coloring and coloring combinations and give it a stir. STEP 4 Using a medicine dropper gently squirt the vinegar mixture over the hearts and watch the fizzy action. STEP 5 Allow the hearts to set for 5 minutes, then gently lift and place on another clean foil lined baking sheet for drying. Once dry, rub the baking soda off of the hearts gently and dust with a paper towel. STEP 6 Select your favorite hearts, swipe the backs with a glue stick and glue to a white sheet of paper that you’ve cut to fit the size of your frame. Fame and admire all that science and art!

GET MOVING WITH THIBODAUX REGIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM

LET’S GET PUMPING

FEBRUARY IS HEART HEALTH MONTH Because children today have so many opportunities to use electronics, as parents, we need to focus on growing healthy hearts at home! Leading by example and showing children how to get their hearts pumping is a great way to let them know how much fun it can be to exercise! Exercise time for adults is usually when we decompress before the day begins or after the day ends. It’s good alone time. It’s stress relief. But, when children see moms and dads working out, they want to do it too. What better way to set them up for lifelong healthiness! When they understand that mom or dad wants to take care of their body and try to keep it healthy and in shape, it motivates them to be healthy too.

1. Planking Put your elbows on the floor, raise up on the tips of your toes, and keep your back straight and your abs tight in a line. Hold that position if you can. 30 seconds is pretty good if your kids can hold it that long.

2. Squats Put your feet shoulders’ width apart and do deep knee bends as if you’re sitting down on an invisible chair. Put your arms out. Make sure your knees don’t extend past your toes.

So, pick a day or two each week and work out together… enjoy the fun, bonding experience! A few tips when working out together: work out at your own pace; don’t get your hopes up if your child, or yourself, cannot keep up. We’re not all American Ninja Warriors! It’s mainly an opportunity to introduce fitness to your children and give them a chance to have fun with exercise. Give them some pointers and try to help maintain good form with certain exercises, because learning to do it right is just as important as doing it. Let’s get started with a few at home moves that most families can accomplish together!

4. Crunches Sit-ups, but not all the way from floor to knee. Just curl your chest toward your knees.

3. Push-ups Keep your abs tight and your back straight; you can do this with a straight or bent knees. 6. Side leg raises Just like Jane Fonda used to do! Keep your legs straight.

5. Lunges Take a step. Touch your back knee to the floor, and make sure your front knee doesn’t extend past the toes. 7. Burpees Let’s get your heart racing! Squat, then put your hands to the ground. Kick your legs straight back behind you, landing on your toes. Then do a push-up, bring your legs back underneath you, and jump straight up off the floor.

FAMILY FIRST

16

FEBRUARY 2020

8. Mountain climbers Start in a push-up position, then alternate bringing one foot at a time forward toward your armpit and then extend it back out.

Don’t forget to first start with a warm-up to get everyone limbered-up and ready. Maybe high knees, or jogging in place, pretend jumping rope, or jumping jacks. Then mix it up! Let each child assemble a workout by picking three of the listed exercises. Do 10 of each exercise and try to finish a circuit: three sets of those three exercises.

9. Butterfly kicks Lie on your back. Keeping your abs tight, raise your feet just barely off the floor and flutter-kick them.

With a circuit-style workout, they can also look forward to an upcoming change with the next exercise. Nobody gets bored doing the same thing for a long period of time. And of course, don’t forget to turn up the music. Music always makes exercise more fun.

For more information contact the Thibodaux Regional Fitness Center, 985.493.4950.

10. V-ups This one’s like a sit-up, but in the shape of a V. Lie back, extend your arms out above your head on the floor, then lift your legs and raise your torso and hands until you make a V. Reach toward your feet, then back down again.

YES, WE CAN!
