Introduction as the leading raw materials exporter and one of the biggest consumption market. Are there other sectors of economy and creative industry that can drive people’s motivation for national pride? Could it be “design” such an engine? Asking these questions, it’s important to understand the origins of national design. It all began with the industrial and cultural revolution in the XVII century led by Peter The Great who tried to replace the traditional medieval social and political system with another one based on modern scientific and Europe-oriented approach. He ordered to translate the Dutch book about shipbuilding by Carel Allard to create the imperial navy, and established the first Russian In recent years, there is a noticeable movement of Russian,

packaging) were devoted to the most important design projects. This was part of a wider Soviet governmental program to improve design standards, further demonstrated by the ruling requiring Soviet manufacturers to use trademarks on their products. Nonetheless, the redesign of “nonessential goods” had a low priority in an economy geared to satisfying the needs of the military and heavy industry.

Taking into account all the above-mentioned, we decided to launch RUB design community to unite the neighbour countries with common historical background, mental, language and artistic similarities. We believe that true talents and hard working professionals are able to break into the world design scene rubbing all the boundaries.

From 1964 VNIITE published the “Technical Aesthetics” design journal with the information supplement on industrial design abroad included. However, the most important in terms of external relations was the link with ICSID (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design), which VNIITE became an institutional member of in 1969. Then postmodernism arrived with the falling of the Berlin Wall, and the destruction of the Soviet Union, the establishment of the Russian Federation, the Republics of Ukraine and Belarus that determined the new artistic and design system of the independent countries. Over the years RUB design turned into fresh phenomenon, without the obligatory soviet iconography and adopted an international outlook, but it has retained its cultural matrix. The new generation of RUB designers seems interested in old stories, they are constantly in search of the personality, trying to understand their role within the international design scene, and how to promote and make their products competitive, and create true innovations. Now the design in RUB countries is to become a tool for business

43 Where did your passion for design come from? It was very interesting to be involved in creating an environment around me. Even coloring wallpapers with crayons is a part of this process. What’s your design philosophy? Where do you find the inspiration for your projects? I love simple organic things, made in accordance with nature. I call it sensual minimalism. I get inspired by nature and design perfection. How can you characterize your approach to designing: as an engineering thought or art? I always try to combine these two things. Design is a symbiosis of an engineering thought and art. Sometimes I follow the specifics of materials and contemporary trends, as it was with my project “Miau!”. What would you like to design? What’s your dream project? Now I only look around me and try to get my own style. Of course, I’d love to see my projects in mass production, create something innovative for consumers. What famous designers would you like to work with and why? I am interested in Karim Rashid’s works. I love his approach to design, his work with material. I am a follower of his 50 commandments. Please define your expectations of publication in the “RUB DESIGN BOOK”. I would like to show my projects in Europe and find a producer for my furniture. MIAU! 131 Where did your passion for design come from? I started to love art in childhood, and after Art College decided to work in design. What’s your design philosophy? Where do you find the inspiration for your projects? Nature and environment inspire me and make me want to make the world a better place. A man is slowly moving from the nature and stops to live in harmony, chooses grey concrete buildings. How can you characterize your approach to designing: as an engineering thought or art? I think these are two extremes and we have to find a way between them, since they are both important. And object can be not only beautiful, but also functional. Ergonomics and design are two important things. What would you like to design? What’s your dream project? I keep my dreams in secret because if I tell it, it may not happen. In collaboration with another designer Vladimir received the first place in competition for the best interior of Shokoladnitsa cafe in Moscow. He considers the project interesting if a client understands a role of a designer or an architect in it. Moscow, RU

RUB DESIGN BOOK

173 Where did your passion for design come from? As I remember, I always drew something, created and made something. I think that everybody has an interest in design, therefore, it can not begin or end. The person can not live without creating. To think means to exist («Je pense, donc je suis», René Descartes, 1637). How would you characterize your approach in designing: closer to engineering thought or to art? From my point of view, such comparison of design approaches is not correct. Design can not exist without engineering thought. The word “design” already means the application of engineering knowledge. If a designer does not use engineering knowledge in work then he does not design. And such person can not be called «designer». The known French scientist-encyclopedist Charles Henri stated an idea very actual for modern design: “It is impossible to study mathematics without being a poet, otherwise, you are engaged in it as the layman”. I mean that it is impossible to be involved in design without being an artist and an engineer at the same time, otherwise, you are dealing with it as a layman. Please define your expectations of publication in the “RUB DESIGN BOOK”. It is a good opportunity to share my thoughts with the world. For me it is quite enough. ROCKING CHAIR Rocking chair is aimed to be used everywhere where people have a rest. Seat and back are designed as one detail according to a matrix. Frame is made of a steel pipe in the form of a rotation spring with bendings for a support and for seat fixture. Rigidity of a spring can be regulated by a choice of pipe section, quantities of rounds, type of steel.

Vladislav Karpushin Vladislav Karpushin graduated in 1992 from Abramtsevo Art and Industrial College named after V.M.Vasnetsov, Wood craft department. In 1999 he graduated from Moscow State Art and Industry Academy named after S.G. Stroganov, Furniture design department. Vladislav is working on product and interior design for residential and public spaces. He believes that the most important thing in design is not to repeat oneself and constantly strive for new creative, technological and decorative solutions. The experience in design proved to Vladislav that most interesting results come from combining four elements: nature, science, technics and art. He sees environment as an endless resource of ideas, which can lead to most courageous and challenging artistic concepts. It gives thought for projects in painting, graphic, furniture and interior design. Moscow, RU

SPILLED Contrasting combination of two materials creates an effect of “spilled liquid and highlights the elegant silhouette. The solid frame reminds of a wineglass, and the brightly colored back looks like a viscous form. Stool (415 x 430 x 910 mm) can be made of transparent, non-transparent plastics or in chrome and mat versions. Seat is covered with fabric or leather.

RUB DESIGN BOOK

177 Where did your passion for design come from? I always disassembled mechanical toys and watches to create something of my own. Once I made a dancing ballet girl from a mechanical helicopter, and a peacock from watches. What’s your design philosophy? Where do you find the inspiration for your projects? I love to think of objects’ life: how will a person deal with this object? How an object will deal with a person? New things in their relations lead to new ideas in design. How can you characterize your approach to designing: as an engineering thought or art? I love art, flavored with engineering thought. I suppose it only works like this in design. My approach to design is in combining these two things. What would you like to design? What’s your dream project? I like designing various things, it’s only important to think of new technologies and design trends, and accumulate them with your own ideas. What famous designers would you like to work with and why? I would be happy to work with Philippe Starck, my congenial soul. Please define your expectations of publication in the “RUB DESIGN BOOK”. I think RUB DESIGN is a very good and long-expected project. It gives an opportunity to meet foreign producers and get to know other designers and their works. JUNCTION The curved and sensuous form of faucet (370 x 170 x 170) inspired by function highlights the hidden mechanism creating a dynamic effect: hot and cold streams are being united in one place to make warm water. Transforming it from a technical product to a decorative object, faucet’s design enhances the room’s overall impression. It can be made in chrome or with coloured finishes.

RABBIT Stool (380 x 380 x 900 mm) has a welded or assembled metal frame flooded with colored plastics. Seat is made of polyurethane foam or curved plywood, covered with porolon and furniture fabric. Stool’s name comes from its spring shape, which is not exactly rabbit-like, but some can see a rabbit’s head in a part of it. What a surprise for a slightly tight guest in a bar!
