SUPERINTENDENT’S COMMENTS

A

s I write this update the Rotary Park project is in full swing with early indications that the new French drains are working! Belden Construction was awarded the project and started in May with the removal of the building. The field project includes three main drains and grading the field to improve drainage. FAQ on the park include – Will the basketball court get put back in? The answer is that we will install hoops in the North Main Street parking lot with lines for half court play. Will there be a walking path? This is a goal for a future phase to encourage active use of the park. Will there be a new building? This is another future phase with the addition of a pavilion with restroom. Will the handball court remain? Yes, we are keeping the handball court. Have you seen the new light poles at the Godnick Center? Our parks staff fixed up the light poles that were removed from Depot Park, retrofitted the bulbs with new LED lighting and installed the poles in June. The lights look great and bring much needed light in the evening to the parking lot. What is an essential service? This discussion will come up in the months ahead as we determine the cost for a new city pool and how it will get funded. In 1929 and 1969 pools were determined to be an essential community service. Will that still be the case in 2016 at the polls? Our goal is to be transparent through the process so you can make an educated decision if the pool is on the ballot in March 2016. Visit our web site at rutlandrec.com for updated pool information. The staff at the main office have loved having kids around this summer with our art classes and theatre classes. Our “new to us” space at the old Courcelle Brothers Reserve building has been working out great. We encourage you to come by anytime for a tour of the building. As summer winds down and fall approaches we encourage you to GO PLAY! What is play? We see play as something that keeps you active and happy. Play for me is biking, running, gardening and playing gaga at events. What is your Play? Whatever your play is, make time to do it for your health – both physical and mental. Yours in community,

Cindi Wight Superintendent
