GO PLAY WINTER
2016
Parks, Programs & Events Guide
LETTER FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT Winter! As a skier, both cross country and downhill, I am eagerly looking forward to a snowy winter. My “Play” in the winter brings the same smiles as other seasons but granted sometimes that smile is hidden behind a face mask! What is your winter Play? Do you like ice skating? If so, remember we have a number of public skate hours at Giorgetti. Wish you knew how to skate? We have lessons from tots through adults so you are never too old to learn to skate. How about snowshoeing? If you can walk you can snowshoe. We have rentals available at Giorgetti by the hour or by the day. I have a feeling we will have more use of them this winter than last. As a snow fan, I am hoping that is not just wishful thinking.
What is your winter Play? We have a lot going on with projects – both new and ongoing. Ongoing We are working on finding the best solution for our pool project. As you may or may not be aware the bids for the project came in substantially higher than the bond. This was disappointing for all of us. Stay tuned for more information. The Center Street Marketplace project also came in much higher than anticipated. We are working on grants and hoping a 2nd bid with more competition will help to bring the price down. The completion of this project will help all of downtown and contribute to Rutland being a great place to live, work and play. We continue to work on improvements to Giorgetti to bring the building into code compliance. Work this winter will include separating ammonia, electric and furnace along with the fire alarm system. We will also be completing an insulation project over the lobby to help increase the efficiency of that space. A new furnace will help with the efficiency, too. New – We have formally been approved for a new pavilion at Rotary Park. We will have through 2018 to complete the project but do hope to tackle it in 2017. A community group is working towards a dog park in Rutland and we will stay involved with the process to assist as possible. Early conversations are being had with GE to build an accessible path from the lower fields at Giorgetti along the creek and then up into the woods coming back around to the main building. We are all excited about this project and will apply for a trails grant to help make it possible. We have also applied to the Bowse Fund for a Park Rx grant that will work through providers to get more people out into the parks as a means to increase their physical activity. We have received proposals for determining the cost and feasibility to add a gymnasium to Courcelle.

Giorgetti Skating Arena: Ice skating for all ages. This year season passes include skate rentals! P. 6 This is a future project but understanding the costs will help us plan. Last but not least, we have begun work on our Master Plan to help guide us over the next 1020 years. Stay tuned for public meetings and focus groups. Much of what we do is enhanced by our partners and sponsoring organizations. Winter Fest is a great example. This event was started in 2003 with partners and continues even stronger today with more partners. Our once a month free public skates are made possible with relationships with partners. Our youth basketball teams have new uniforms due to our local businesses that sponsor our end of season tournament. Thank you to all of the individuals, businesses and nonprofits that support our efforts in creating opportunities for a more vibrant community. Have a fun winter and remember to GO PLAY! Yours in the community, Cindi Wight, CPRE

Volunteer coaches are the backbone of the recreation department youth sports programs. We appreciate the efforts of all of our volunteers over the years. Unfortunately, it has become increasingly difficult to find an adequate number of volunteers each season. Effective immediately, if there are an insufficient number of volunteers at the program start date, the program may be delayed, amended or even canceled. Please note that participants fees for our programs are based on adults stepping forward to volunteer; in the event that programs have to move to paid staff, program fees will have to increase significantly. Please consider volunteering…as a coach or a team parent..the opportunities are endless! The reward is knowing that you made and investment in the future of our community…our children! The recreation department can assist by offering written materials and coaching clinics. Please contact Nicole Densmore 7731822 for additional information.

TAI CHI TAI CHI is often described as “mediation in motion,” it is a mindbody practice, originating in China as a martial art. In addition to addressing general overall wellness, studies confirm Tai Chi has value in treating or preventing many health problems including arthritis and balance issues. And you can get started even if you aren’t in top shape or the best of health. In this lowimpact, slowmotion exercise, you go without pausing through a series of motions. As you move, you breathe deeply and naturally, focusing your attention – as in some kinds of meditation – on your bodily sensations. This class is a fun, relaxing and enjoyable way to move with mindfulness and enjoy the comradery of others while practicing. Tai Chi for Beginners will be offered for 6 weeks on Tuesdays, 12:30 pm to 1:15 pm, January 10 thru February 14. Certified instructors Nan Hart and Lori Hickey will lead the classes. Class size is limited.
