SUPERINTENDENT’S COMMENTS

A

lways hard to think summer when we print our summer brochure in March but if you are like me you appreciate being able to pencil in the summer schedule. We have a number of new programs including a toddler hike with Tom Estill and the Little Bella’s mountain bike camp. Make sure you take the time to browse through the brochure so you don’t miss anything! Since it is March and the bulbs are starting to peek out I can’t help but reflect on spring and how magical a time it is for growth. For the last 15 years we have gone “south” for April vacation camping in a variety of places. I love how it allows me to see spring multiple times in different stages. This year south will only be as far as northern Virginia but it will still be further ahead than Vermont. We might even see leaves on trees! I have been fortunate to see quite a bit of the United States through family adventures, work trips and where we have lived. Those experiences really make me appreciate the quality of life we have here in Rutland. I will need to time our drive from PA to VA as we could get stuck for hours in traffic. In Rutland that means planning a few extra minutes to get across town on a Friday. I was on the chairlift the other day with someone who drives over 3 hours one way to Vermont every weekend in the winter. I had a leisurely breakfast and then drove 10 minutes to that same ski area. I see license plates with bike racks from NY, NJ, MA regularly in the parking lot at Giorgetti to bike the trails at Pine Hill. I am able to get on my bike at home and be on those same trails in under 10 minutes. Canoeing or kayaking? Chittenden Reservoir, one of the most beautiful places in Vermont, is about 10 minutes from home. One of my favorite road bike rides from home takes me past or through 3 covered bridges on quiet back roads. Quality of life – for me that is all those examples above. For some it is having the unbelievable options at the Paramount Theatre or the variety of art galleries within walking distance of downtown Rutland. It might be having a neighborhood park within walking distance of their home. It might be having schools within walking or biking distance or a walkable downtown. For 71% of those that voted on Town Meeting Day in Rutland City, quality of life equals having a public outdoor pool! Quality of life – if we at the Rutland Recreation & Parks Department are not enhancing your quality of life please let me know and we will do what we can to make Rutland a great place for you to live, work and play! Yours in community,

Cindi Wight Superintendent

P.S. Way to go Rutland in voting YES for the pool! Bids will go out early June with construction starting fall 2016. We are still on target to open June 2017.
