BUS TRIP: “TICKET TO RIDE” Beatles Tribute Band at the Log Cabin in Holyoke, MA on Wednesday, October 13. 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the Beatles landing on American shores. Since then the “Fab Four” have inspired generations with their sound, wit and charm. Recreating the Beatles sound and harmonies in the original key, and the Beatles guitar and drum arsenal, Ticket to Ride goes over the top! . The fee of $82, due at time of registration, includes the show, lunch (Combo platter featuring London Broil with Mushroom Bordelaise Sauce and Baked Scrod with Seasoned Bread Crumbs) and transportation. The bus leaves the Center at 8:30 a.m. and returns at approximately 5:30 p.m.

PROGRAMS: BAKING CLASSES with June Osowski at the Godnick Adult Center SESSION 1: BLT Pizza – Saturday, October 3, 10 am to Noon Great pizza is easy to make at home. Each student will make dough to take home. We'll bake a BLT pizza in the Godnick kitchen to sample. Please bring a mixing bowl and spoon. SESSION 2 Pie Made Easy – Saturday, November 7, 10 am to Noon Just in time for the holiday season, learn to make two great pie crusts. Learn shaping techniques, too. Each student will bring home a baked treat. Please bring a mixing bowl, spoon, and small storage container. AGES: Adult (youth welcome with a participating adult FEE: $8 per person per session. Registration is on-going at the Courcelle Building at 16 North St. Ext.
BOOK ARTS WORKSHOP with Carolyn Shattuck, Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, October 25, 9 am to 3 pm. This workshop offers a fun exploration into making unique and simple books. By folding, gluing and sewing book patterns, we will create Flutter, Flexagons and Pamphlet books. They can be seen as containers for stories, photos and much more. No experience necessary. Supplies included in the $25 /day or $40/2 days fee.
CLAY CREATIONS at the Courcelle Building on North St. Ext. Make projects based on the technique of the week. Handbuilt forms slabbed, coiled, carved or pressed molded. Come with your ideas or find something in our project library. This is a drop in program, but pre-registration is encouraged. In order to complete
projects (fired and glazed) you will need to enjoy two evenings at least. Come relax, imagine, design and create! Grades 6 to Adult, Mondays 6:30pm-8:00pm 11/2-12/7 $5R/$8NR (cost per day)
Fitness PROGRAMS TAI CHI is often described as “mediation in motion,” it is a mind-body practice, originating in China as a martial art. In addition to addressing general overall wellness, studies confirm Tai Chi has value in treating or preventing many health problems including arthritis and balance issues. And you can get started even if you aren’t in top shape or the best of health. In this low-impact, slow-motion exercise, you go without pausing through a series of motions. As you move, you breathe deeply and naturally, focusing your attention – as in some kinds of meditation – on your bodily sensations. This class is a fun, relaxing and enjoyable way to move with mindfulness and enjoy the comradery of others while practicing. Tai Chi for Beginners will be offered for 8 weeks on Tuesdays, 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm, Sept. 29 thru Nov. 17. Certified instructors Nan Hart and Lori Hickey will lead the classes. Registration (class size is limited) begins Sept. 1 in the office.
PRANA YOGA – These classes are on-going Mondays, 11:45 am to 12:45 pm and Fridays, 10:30-11:30 a.m. No experience necessary. Gentle movements with body awareness, and breathing exercises to invigorate and relax the body and the mind. Bring a mat or blanket, and wear comfortable clothes. Poses may be done in a chair, or lying down. The student is guided to move into a posture only so far as it feels right to her/his body. Instructor: Tammy Brown. Fee: $5.00 per class. ALSO on Fridays at 11:30 – noon: Introduction to meditation. A variety of styles and techniques will be presented. No charge. **The fee for Fit for Life and the two Line Dancing classes is $3 per class or 10 classes for $25.
**FIT FOR LIFE with Marilyn Sheldon. Increase your level of fitness on Monday and Wednesday mornings at 9:15 a.m. with regular exercise. The course includes simple low impact exercise, step exercise, strength work and flexibility. No classes September 7 or 9.
**GROOVEY GRANNIES LINE DANCE – Intermediate line dance, mostly country with a little variety. No partner is needed. The fee is $3. Marilyn Sheldon leads the dancing on Thursday mornings at 9:15 a.m. The line dance class also includes practicing routines for entertaining at the local nursing homes. (Dancing at the homes is not mandatory but if you’d like to we are more than happy to have you join us.) No class on Sept. 10.
**COUNTRY LINE DANCE – Join us on Tuesday mornings. We’ll start at 9:15 a.m. for the beginner, to go over steps, 9:30 is for everyone and 10:15-10:30 is for the intermediate. Come for a fun cardiovascular workout with both new and old-line dances. No experience necessary. No partner needed. Marilyn Sheldon is the instructor. No class Sept. 8.
RSVP BONE BUILDERS – is an Osteo Exercise Program on Mondays/Wednesdays mornings at 9:15 a.m., afternoons at 1 p.m. and evenings at 5:30 p.m. and Tuesdays/Thursdays at 3:30 p.m. This is a free program through RSVP. MOVERS and SHAKERS – This free program of low impact exercise is designed for people with Parkinson’s, or anyone else who wishes to maintain or improve flexibility, strength and balance in a supportive and relaxing environment. Social ACTIVITIES MOVIE– The movie for Wednesday, September 9, is “American Sniper” with Bradley Cooper. Based on his memoir of the same name, this military biopic centers on legendary sniper Chris Kyle, who amassed a record number of kills on the battlefield during his 10-year career as a Navy SEAL. Rated R.
BOOK DISCUSSION CLUB – Our next discussion on Tuesday, September 29, at 2 pm is “The Obituary Writer” by Ann Hood. A sophisticated and suspenseful novel about the poignant lives of two women living in different eras. Part literary mystery and part love story, The Obituary Writer examines expectations of marriage and love, the roles of wives and mothers, and the emotions of grief, regret, and hope.
“KNITTING and MORE” - Want to knit or crotchet with a group? Come join us on Tuesday afternoons at 12:30 pm. Meet new friends, work on personal projects, and help with new ones. If you are interested join us on Tuesday afternoons.
SuDoKu: What’s All the Excitement About? Beginning September 2 the Godnick Center will host a weekly SuDoKu class on Wednesday afternoons at two o’clock. The SuDoKu for Seniors program will run classes catering to absolute beginners as well as more advanced players.

The van will leave the Center at 10:30 am for an 11:30 am lunch. HEALTH CLINIC with blood pressure and health guidance with volunteer Krista Pike, RN on BRUNCH is on Wednesday, September 30, at 11 a.m. The menu will consist of Pancakes and maple syrup, scrambled eggs, sausage or bacon, potatoes, fruit salad, juice and coffee. The fee of $4 is payable at time of registration in the office. Please register by Monday, September 28. Come have a SASH Chat with Brenda Howe SASH Coordinator. She can talk about services and resources in the area. Brenda will be at Godnick Center on September 21 at 11:30. SASH is a program to help seniors stay healthy and happy in their homes. Medicare Minute – with Kelly McElheny from Cove on Thursday, September 24, at 12:15 pm. SMP is partnering with the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) to present short Medicare and fraud prevention presentations. Each month a new topic will be covered providing participants with the most current information available.

Wild Woods Music Co-op plans singing "circles" and fiddle jam sessions on the first three Wednesdays of each month during 2015. “Song circles” are on the first and third Wednesdays of the month. The circles feature singers and acoustic instrument
players taking turns around a circle. Song circles are open to all abilities as well as to those who simply want to listen. A printed song book allows audience participation in singing familiar folksongs. A fiddle jam on the second Wednesday features fiddle tunes and songs using the same round-the-circle format. Guitars, banjos and other instruments play along with the fiddles. Again, all abilities are welcome, as are listeners. These musical evenings have been ongoing at the Godnick Center since January of 2014. As mentioned, sessions occur the first three Wednesdays of each month. Donations are appreciated. THURSDAY HIKES SCHEDULE – 2015
The Rutland Recreation and Parks Dept. sponsors a series of hikes at a less strenuous pace for seniors. Hikes typically cover 2-4 miles, involve limited to moderate elevation gain, and try to avoid treacherous footing. Bring water and a lunch, wear sturdy footwear, and be prepared for Vermont weather. Bring bug spray, and guard against ticks by wearing long sleeves and pants. Meet on Thursdays at 9 am at the Godnick Center on Deer Street to car pool. We return in early to mid-afternoon. Call hike leaders if you have questions. All are welcome. NOTE: Hikes are subject to change due to weather and/or trail conditions.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) is starting on Friday, September 4, at 1:30 pm with the series "The American Presidency", opening with a living history presentation of Abraham Lincoln. IMPORTANT: We have a new procedure tor member sign-up and attendance. Please plan to arrive early on September 4 so that we can start the lecture on time. THE AMERICAN PRESIDENCY “A Visit with Abraham Lincoln” - September 4
Steve Wood will give a living history presentation as our 16th president. He will include stories of his early life, the LincolnDouglas debates, the Civil War that followed his election in 1860, and a reading of the Gettysburg Address. Complete with Lincoln’s height, beard, and costume, Wood has been portraying Abraham Lincoln since 1995.
“I Think I Can Swing It”: The Presidency of Calvin Coolidge - September 11
This overview of the almost 67-month-presidency of Vermont’s native son will be presented by Rushad Thomas, program associate at the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation. From the pre-dawn swearing-in of Coolidge after Warren Harding’s death in 1923 through the Roaring ‘20s Washington, D.C., Thomas will take us through Coolidge’s crusade for lower taxes, sensible immigration policies, and world peace.
George Washington Invents the Presidency - September 18
Prof. Willard Sterne Randall, historian, investigative journalist, biographer, and speaker, will spell out how our first president delegated authority, how he included his wife in his office, how he detested partisan politics, equally mistrusted the press and the French, and how he forged presidential traditions that still endure. Redeemer President: The Significance of Jimmy Carter - September 25
Though widely reviled in the years following his defeat in 1980, President Carter has redeemed himself in the eyes of many with his energetic humanitarian work since then. Dartmouth Professor of American Religious History Randall Balmer will explore the life and career of Carter, including the religious principles that motivated his entry into politics.
WHAT IS TRIAD? TRIAD is a coalition of law enforcement, senior citizens and senior service agencies working together to make the lives of seniors safer and more enjoyable. Senior ID Cards- a picture identification card containing emergency medical information about you and emergency contact information too. 2. AARP Safe Driving Course – Sharen Underwood teaches this course 3 times a year. Designed as an update for senior drivers, it is a valuable course to take. 3. Public Speaker- One of our team members (a law enforcement officer) is happy to be a speaker at meetings, senior centers or senior housing. Speaking on crime prevention and safety topics. 4. Senior Picnic – Meals on Wheels provides the food and TRIAD provides the entertainment. 5. Safe at Home Program – suggestions by a law enforcement officer on how to make your home safer against a potential burglar. Comes with a free Safe Alert light bulb for your porch light.
