elcome to our summer brochure. As you will see inside we have many great opportunities for you and/or your children this summer. As a long-term recreation professional the parks side has been a steep learning curve for me this past year. Through my contacts with professionals across the country I am finding we are facing a similar situation as many other communities. The feverish building of facilities in the 1970’s and ‘80s with the Federal Land, Water and Conservation Fund has now hit a critical point with long-term maintenance needs. Almost all our city parks have been touched by the fund that keeps the land “forever outdoor recreation.” The park development and improvements by the fund include: tennis and basketball courts and pool improvements at White Park; tennis courts and basketball court at Rotary Park (tennis courts twice); basketball and tennis courts, playground and ball

fields at Meadow St. Park; arena, ball fields and parking at Giorgetti Park; playground at River St. Park; gazebo and park improvements at the Godnick Center; and ball fields at Cioffreddi Park. The decision by our department that was supported by feedback from the community is to work to maintain and improve our current facilities. This will mean community financial support for larger projects that require bonding. White’s Pool is not opening this summer and our next pool will require a bond vote. Giorgetti Arena will require a bond vote if we want to realize the goal of a fully enclosed facility with appropriate air handling and insulation. For our other parks we are utilizing money in the general fund; harnessing the work of volunteers; focusing staff time; writing grants; and trying to find other creative ways to stay on top of the maintenance needs and make improvements.

With the majority of my focus currently on park projects, I am fortunate to have professional recreation staff who are able work independently to provide top notch quality programs for the youth and adults of our community. We have a wide variety of programs available this summer with new nature programs; our t-ball and mitey mites baseball program has been revamped with Walt Manney taking a lead role; and our tried and true summer camp programs getting updates and tweaks to make them even better for the participants. While there might be snow on the ground as I write this, our Recreation staff is working hard to make sure our community has a great summer! Remember to get outside and PLAY this summer!

FAQ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I register?  You can register anytime during office hours at the Courcelle building (SEE REGISTRATION FORM FOR DETAILS)  Payment for recreational programs can be made with cash, check or credit/debit card (visa or mastercard). Cash or check only for Godnick Center Programs.  You can register for programs anytime online at www.rutlandrec.com.  No registrations can be placed over the phone  Registrations will be accepted until the program is filled, unless a deadline is stated in the program description.  Early registration is encouraged as programs fill up quickly  PLEASE NOTE: Programs incur a $10 late registration fee less than 10 days from the start date.

Do you provide scholarships?

 Limited access programs may have a later registration date for non-residents. If so, it will be noted under the program information.

What is the refund policy?  A full refund (minus a $5 administrative fee) will be given for withdrawal from a program if requested ten (10) business days prior to the start of the program.  If the department makes changes to a class that prohibitsa participant from attending the class, there is a full refund with no administrative fees.  A 50% refund will be given for withdrawal from a program. if the request is made less than 10 days prior but before the class has started. In the case of team sports, the date the program  has started is the date the teams are formed.  A 25% refund will be given for withdrawal from the program if a request is made on the day that the program started (or the day after for evening classes). There are no refunds after that date.  All requests for refunds must be made in writing by filling out a Refund Request Form, which is available in the office or at rutlandrec.com

Return Check Fee Policy There is a fee of $40 from customers whose checks have been returned to the city.

What if a program is postponed or cancelled?

 The Rutland Recreation and Parks Department and the Recreation Committee recognize that the charging of fees for programs may place such an economic hardship on some individuals that they are unable to participate. For that reason, a fee reduction waiver system is available for eligible residents of Rutland City.  All scholarships will run from July 1st to June 30th of each year.  Persons applying must do so before June 15th to be activated by July 1st.  You must reapply each year to see if you are eligible for a scholarship.  Contact the recreation office for information or to apply for the scholarship.  Confidentiality will be maintained.

 Inclement Weather: In the event of rain some programs may be cancelled. You should check our website www.rutlandrec.com  Other Cancellations: We reserve the right to cancel any programs due to insufficient enrollment or for other reasons preventing the acceptable presentation of the activity.

When does registration begin?

 Reasonable accommodations will be provided upon request to ensure that programs are accessible to all individuals regardless of challenge.

 Upon receipt of the brochure, residents are encouraged to register for the Summer Programs beginning Monday March 30th.

Am I a resident?  If you live within the Rutland City limits you are a resident

What do non-residents pay?  Non-residents pay an additional $11 administrative fee per program

Do you provide insurance?  The Rutland Recreation and Parks Department does not provide accident or hospitalization insurance for participants. Participants are strongly advised to have adequate insurance. Participation is at your own risk.

Are your programs accessible?

Do you have a participant behavior policy?  Behaviors of participants that pose a risk to other participants, staff and or the participant himself/herself or that so alters the program to such a degree that we are no longer offering the intended program, will be a cause to remove the participant or participants from the program either temporarily or permanently.

Not Just Art

This camp will be mainly outdoors (weather permitting) and will involve trips to inspirational outdoor places where we can capture the beauty around us through paints, charcoal, pastels, and pen and ink. Journals will be offered to continue the drawing process after camp. Light hikes (and games) will be part of our week as well as an afternoon at a lake beach/park. Price includes $15 trip/materials fee.

Creating big projects (like stepping stones and bird feeders) full of big expression made with a wide range of materials: papers, paints, fabrics, recyclables, plus natural materials for our fairy forest. Price includes $20 materials fee.

Come to “Not Just Art” time at Wonderfeet Children’s Museum to explore science concepts through art! Facilitated by Hands On, Minds On art studio instructors, each art activity has an element of science within the process and builds on the desire of children to experiment and discover. Our art products will be the result of our art experiments and experiences. Join us the 4th Saturday of each month starting March 28th at any time between 10:30 and 12:30. Participation in “Not Just Art” is free with museum admission.

Imaginarium

This week campers will explore many art making methods both traditional and modern while exploring a variety of materials. Highlights include paints, collage, mosaics, fabrics and more. Clay Works Exploring clay (sticky mud) promotes sensual and visual representation like no other medium. Lights, Camera...Action! Film Camp Looking to learn and experience the world of television? Day Camp We offer a day camp program for your child from first thru seventh grade. Our energetic staff love working with your kids and look forward to coming back each year. Each camp runs weekly. If you register for 3 or more sessions of a camp you can post-date checks and we will deposit them 10 days prior to the start of the session. The first session must be paid in full at time of registration. This allows you to secure a spot in the camp. CAMPS WILL FILL UP!

Overall Camp Description: Our Rutland Rec. Summer Camp prides itself on providing children with a chance to experience a summer full of amazing field trips. We engage our campers in various types of physical activities, and expose them to Vermont's natural environment. A summer spent with us will help to develop your child's independence, while giving them a chance to just enjoy being a kid. Our experienced camp staff will guide your children through some of the hidden treasures that this area has to offer.

Details: All camps offer pre and post care at no extra charge: Early supervised time 7:45AM – 9:00AM; Late supervised time 4:00PM – 5:30PM. The base fee for all camps is $106 for residents and $117 for non-residents, trip fees are added on to the base fee and vary depending on where the camp travels. There are no sibling discounts. All late registrations (received less than 10 days from the start date) will incur a $10 late registration fee.

Summer is here so let the fun begin. Activities will include: a scavenger hunt, group games, a field day, and arts& crafts. These activities will get your kids into the swing of camp. Vermont is full of hidden treasures. So, come find some of them with us. Trips to Shelburne Museum, Lake George, and a Steam Boat Ride will let us explore a few beautiful locations. Champ Camp! Our summer day camp season will start and finish this year with Champ Camp! Fun in the Sun now that school is done! Let your kids make new friends and enjoy day camp adventures. We will be located at the Christ the King Gym which lends itself to easy walks to our local parks for plenty of play and fun. Swim Team Head Coach: Barb Marshall Assistant Coach: Melissa Patterson Description: ALL SWIM TEAM ACTIVITIES WILL BE HELD AT RUTLAND TOWN’S NORTHWOOD POOL IN 2015. PLEASE NOTE THAT NORTHWOOD POOL IS NOT HEATED. Practices are Monday through Friday mornings. No practice on Friday July 3rd. Swim meets will be held in the evenings on Tuesdays and some Saturdays. The District Meet will be held this year at Northwood Pool on Saturday July 25th. The State Meet will be held at UVAC on August 1st & 2nd.

Those who practice regularly will swim in meets. Swim Team has an approximate ratio of 1:20. The focus is on endurance, improving strokes, instilling a love for competitive swimming and having fun. Critical to the swim team experience is the involvement of parents. When you sign up your child you sign up yourself to help at meets, a meet has to have parent involvement!! Volunteer for a minimum of 4 out of 7 meets and receive a $50 refund at the end of the season. *The prices below include the $20 pool fee. Youth Sports MOUNTAIN BIKING Youth Mountain Bike Club

High School Mountain Bike Team

Our youth mountain bike club is open to all levels of mountain bikers from all towns in grades 6-12 (younger participants are welcome with an accompanying adult). Participants will need a mountain bike with gears, helmet, closed-toe shoes and appropriate attire. Club members will ride together two times per week with the option to compete in the Droopy Pedal Series at Pine Hill Park and the Wednesday night race series at Catamount in Williston. Travel will be provided to some races for an additional fee of $10 per racer to cover gas money. Mountain bike skills will be taught for beginners through expert youth riders. Our high school mountain bike team will be competing in the Lakes Region High School Mountain Bike Series. Lakes Region races are on Wednesdays at 3:30 PM and athletes will need to leave school early as some races are as far as 2 ½ - 3 hours away. Don’t want to miss school but still want to be on the team? That is OK! You can join us for practices and home races. The team is open to athletes from any town. Youth Sports Camps What makes a Rutland Recreation Sports Camp special? Affordable: We offer affordable sports camps while maintaining quality coaching. Need base scholarships are available through the Rutland Recreation and Parks Department that may be applied to any of our sports camp.

Onsite and Qualified Directors: Our camps are run by qualified and energetic staff that will be present with your young athlete throughout the camp. Other sports camps may use a well known director for their camp that may not be present and working with your child to improve their skills, but our camps make sure that the camp director and coaching staff give attention to campers.

Smaller Camp Size = Lots of Attention: Smaller camp sizes allow for more individual skill instruction and a tight knit camp community.

Keep it Local: When possible camp directors are local high school coaches that over see their sport’s program from Middle School thru the Varsity level. This allows for campers to establish a relationship that could last through out their athletic career in the Rutland area. We have also had directors that are local alumni now playing at the collegiate level.

Rutland Area Osher, Lifelong Learning Institute Lecture Series Each lecture will be on Friday afternoon at the Godnick Adult Center, 1 Deer Street, 1:30-3 PM. CANADA, OUR NEIGHBOR TO THE NORTH April 10 - Does Canada Matter? with Professor David Massell. His lecture will cover Canada in the American imagination, then will provide an overview of the importance of Canada in trade (focus on Vermont), immigration, and the possibilities for comparative understanding, as well as in Americans’ ability to better know themselves. April 17 - Prohibition in Vermont: the 13-Year National Experiment: Prohibition became law in 1920. It banned the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcohol in the United States. But Canada had no such law. Scott Wheeler, publisher of “Vermont’s Northland Journal” and author of “Rumrunners and Revenuers”, will discuss the smuggling across the border, the danger, and the enforcement challenges this questionable law presented in 1920-1933. April 24 - The Group of Seven - Founded in 1920, this group of Canada’s unique modern artists sought to inspire appreciation of the beauty of Canada’s diverse landscapes through their work. Dr. William Tortolano, will present slides and commentary on this artistic mosaic of Canada’s regions – the Maritimes, Rockies, Plains, Old Quebec, First Nations, and more. May 1 - The Canary in the Coal Mine: The Canadian Arctic in the 21st Century. UVM Geography Professor Shelly Rayback will address why we should be paying attention to the Canadian Arctic. The Rutland Recreation Department in conjunction with the Vermont Recreation & Parks Association is offering discounted tickets to Great Escape, Six Flags New England and Bromley Sun Mountain Adventure Park. The tickets are good for the 2015 season. Buying your ticket from the Rutland Recreation Department supports local and state recreation and accommodates you by not having to stand in line for your tickets at the parks. The cost of tickets are $35 for Great Escape; $36 for Six Flags New England and $27 for Bromley Sun Mountain Adventure Park. Our prices are significantly less than what you would pay at the gate. You need to bring cash for payment.

Nature Inspirations with Thomas Estill Night Owl Prowl Join local naturalist Tom Estill on a night stroll along the Carriage Trail as we search for Owls inhabiting the Pine Hill Park. We'll be using various owl calls to help entice the owls to fly to the area where we are standing in order to get a close up view of these magnificent birds.
