Rutland Recreation Winter Comments
B
y now you have seen our Go Play message on the backs of cars, our special events trailer, on signatures, in our marketing, etc. What does it mean? Play is what you enjoy doing. As a child, play might have been biking throughout the neighborhood, swinging on trees, jumping in leaves, going down slides or playing tag. As an adult, what is your play now? Is it walking? Snowshoeing? Skiing? Biking? Dancing? Yoga? Research has shown that regular physical activity makes you feel better, sleep better, have more energy, makes you happier and improves cognition. If you are inactive or have low activity levels you only need to exceed your current level to get the benefits! I read an article one morning that noted that if “physical activity was a pill every doctor would prescribe it, every insurance company would be happy to pay for it and every American would take it on a regular basis.” (www.physicalactivityplan. org) The U.S. Surgeon General recently released his Call to Action on Walking and Walkable Communities. We will be meeting as a staff to discuss the CTA and what we can do as a department to help our residents get moving or stay moving. Is it posting distances around our fields? Is it more paths around our parks? Is it working with public works to make sure there are safe sidewalks that lead to all of our parks? Is it encouraging more walkers to come out for our 5K events? Do you have ideas? Please share them with me at cindw@rutlandrec.com. At our Leaf Chase 10K we had 4 walkers join the runners this year. They were friends who had the chance to spend close to two hours visiting with each other while walking along the beautiful Carriage Trail from Proctor to Rutland. Make walking a social routine and before you know it you will have found your play, feel better and be better connected with your family and friends! Want to make ice skating your play this year? Our rink opens Monday November 2nd and we offer several public skate times each week. We have adult and child ice skating lessons for those that are just learning or want to improve their skills. When the snow falls you can rent snowshoes and enjoy a walk through our beautiful Pine Hill Park. Find your PLAY this winter and reap the benefits of regular physical activity!

CENTRAL VERMONT FIGURE SKATING CLUB
Freestyle skating is available for club members Sunday mornings from 7:30 to 10:30 beginning November 8th though February 28th. The cost for Sunday morning sessions is $350 for the year, paid in advance. If you’d like to check it out first, there is a drop in fee of $15/hr. for residents and $18/hr. for non-residents (maximum of two visits). Drop in fees will be deducted from your membership if you decide to join. We are a loose affiliation of figure skaters, some competitive, some strictly recreational, working on many different levels to improve our skills and have a great time doing it. We welcome all levels of figure skaters but for safety reasons, younger children must skate well enough to get out of the way of fast moving competitive skaters and be mature enough to be aware of their presence. This is not an appropriate time for beginning skaters. We especially extend a welcome to adults who haven’t done figure skating in years but would like to give it a try again. Come join us for a great, fun workout!
