Cromer Christmas Lights It can't have passed you by that the Cromer Christmas Lights Volunteers started putting up the lights this year in September. Why on earth do they need to start so early? I hear you say, we have only just got used to the fact that Autumn is here, we don't want to start thinking about Christmas yet!

The reason that we need to start early is that this year’s switch on is a week early on Friday 30 November at 6.45pm, we do not go out on remembrance Sunday and it takes us eight weeks to put the lights up. It takes us eight weeks to get them up because of Cromer's interesting road system, the A148 runs straight through the very narrow heart of Cromer, Hamilton Road and Church Street. We try, some might say we fail, to hold up the traffic as little as possible, we start at 9am on Sunday mornings when traffic is light, and we try to move off the main routes by 10.30am. Restorative approaches in Norfolk

In Norfolk we believe that restorative approaches work by building relationships, maintaining relationships and repairing relationships when harm has been caused.

Restorative approaches support emotional and social development and literacy and equip people with problem solving skills and the ability to manage conflict when it occurs.

Restorative approaches help build respect, responsibility, resolution and reintegration. In broad terms, Restorative Approaches constitute an approach to challenging behaviour, which puts repairing harm done to relationships and people, over and above the need for assigning blame and dispensing punishment (Wright, 1999).

Many people will behave and work in a restorative way without recognising it. This is because restorative principles underpin a variety of different practice models and techniques. If you are working with people, there is a high level of support and a high level of control. You have a clear bottom line about what you can and can’t do, and everyone involved has an equal voice in resolving an issue.

Restorative principles are: • Respect • Responsibility • Reflection • Working ‘with’ people • Giving everyone involved an equal voice • Fair and consistent process • Honesty • Inclusion • Empowering people to be part of solving the problems they face • Clear bottom line

Restorative approaches provide us with the foundation to build, maintain and repair relationships positively with families, communities, staff and partners. By working together with people, in equal measures of high

evidence about the impact and will continue to do so.

support and high control, we can achieve our aim to develop responsibility and ownership, and from that, sustainable families and sustainable communities.

Norfolk County Council Children’s Services is the lead partner in a multi-agency partnership that aims to establish Norfolk as a restorative County by 2015.

There has been significant progress since 2010 and the benefits of restorative approaches have been shown in a number of local arenas including criminal justice, education, communities and social care.

The outcomes that have been experienced as a consequence of restorative activity in the county has prompted Norfolk County Council to announce their commitment to becoming a restorative authority. These outcomes include:

The restorative approaches developments are overseen by a partnership board. The partners are: Norfolk County Council Norfolk Youth Offending Team District Councils Norfolk Constabulary Norfolk and Suffolk Probation Trust Norfolk Magistrates Association Norfolk Association of Town and Parish Councils Norfolk Rural Community Council Voluntary Sector Organisations Schools

For further details or further Information contact Brian Hannah, County Councillor for Sheringham, Norfolk County Council Champion for Restorative Approaches. Tel 01263823791or 07789 397462.

• Reduction in Looked After Children in the Youth Justice System by 52% • 19% reduction in Police call-outs to Residential Homes • Reduction in school exclusions • Improved school attendance rates • Improved school attainment • Reduction in persistent absentees • Improved victim satisfaction rates • Reduction in crime and anti-social behaviour • Empowered communities • Reduction in first-time entrants to the youth justice system

There are a lot of exciting developments happening across Norfolk to embed restorative approaches in all our work with children, young people, families and communities. Norfolk is seen as a leader both nationally and internationally in the field of restorative approaches. We have been gathering lots of

Autumn Leaves

There’s a nip in the air, Autumn is here, The countryside is beautiful At this time of year. Sunlight filters through the trees, Making everywhere so bright, I watch the river sparkle, Such a magical sight. I see a red squirrel whizzing up a tree, The speed that he is moving

Quite surprises me. Gold and brown leaves spiral down And crackle where I tread, The colours are amazing, Sometimes the leaves are red. My spirits are lifted At the colours I see, I long for days like this, They give such joy to me.

Grumpy Old Man Serving our best interests!

I am going to tread into a dodgy area this issue – local politics! (universal groans from all!)

Looking back, it was a sad day when political parties took over Local Government and sadder still when it was decided to pay councillors attendance allowance, enabling people who would previously not have voluntarily served to take time off from their employment for Council duties and to enjoy a paid hobby.

Prior to that, councillors and aldermen (remember them?) were independent people with altruistic principles who stood for office to serve their fellows, concerned to put something back into the communities in which they had grown and prospered. They were, in the main, capable, well-respected, unfettered by dogma and earned their reputations through their actions, mostly still manifest in fine public buildings, parks and amenities of which they were proud progenitors.

Nowadays men and women of this calibre stand very little chance of being elected to office as independent because people are conditioned to vote for political parties by the weight of expensive, organised campaigning. Joining a party entails sacrificing individual independence in order to get elected and becoming part of a faction, which consequently means if it is a minority group you won’t get anything constructive done. If it is a majority group and does achieve something, no individual gets any kudos, nor the blame if it subsequently goes wrong. It is hardly the recipe to spur people on. Instead it crushes ambition. The system is unlikely to change because those long-serving councillors enjoying their part time second careers in Local Government get too comfortable and are not obliged to retire in rotation after a set number of terms in office in order to make way for fresh faces and new thinking. This is a major cause of voter apathy and an obstacle to progress. I rest my case and await howls of indignation which must surely ensue.

Save lives with the extra hour Now the clocks have gone back, what will you do with the extra hour? Stay in bed? Fit in an extra gym session? Spend time with family? How about saving a life?

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) are reminding the public that it only takes an hour to give blood. With blood in constant demand, new and existing donors are being urged to donate in Cromer to ensure that sufficient blood is available for patients.

There are many ways that donated blood can save the lives of the sick and injured. Donated blood is used not only in accident and emergency situations but also for patients undergoing surgery and receiving treatment for cancer and blood diseases, such as leukaemia.

Giving blood can dramatically improve or save the lives of those in need of blood transfusions, in fact a single donation can be broken into three component parts (red cells, plasma and platelets) which means that one donation can potentially save or improve the lives of up to three people. Derek Carr, Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHSBT, said “As the weather gets colder, people are more likely to stay indoors. We would like to remind people that they only need to spend an hour of their time with us in order to help save lives. With the increase in the cold and flu this season, it is vital that those that are able to donate do so, to keep stock levels healthy”.

Anyone aged between 17 - 65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years. To book an appointment call the Donor Line on 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk

Fly into the Loft

Take a stroll down Church Street in Cromer, pass the church on your left and you will find a new shop, quaintly entitled 'Norfolk Pigeon Loft'.

It's been open barely two months, owned by Donna Cherry, and is home to a wide range of interesting costume jewellery, hats, scarves, belts and purses (not just for women though).

Christmas just around the corner we will have lots of fun with the displays."

They will be adding useful gift vouchers in the near future and have a range of very pretty boxes for prezzies starting at just 60p.

Why the Norfolk Pigeon Loft? "Four years before opening the shop we worked in a converted pigeon loft - and it's a great name for the shop, plus our cute logo!" Donna commented."It's been great fun for the first two months - our stock is always changing, and the large windows, that were a little daunting to dress as our items are relatively small, has become a joy to design. With

"We make many of the pieces of costume jewellery ourselves, and one thing we are asked to do regularly is to change our charm earrings from silver/gold plate ear hooks to studs, clip-ons or sterling silver (925) earring hooks. Now everyone can wear our quirky earrings, conversions start at 30p."

"A few weeks ago I had a customer tell me that we sold jewellery that you don't have feel guilty about buying - wear it for season or just one occasion, you won't break the bank." How would Donna describe their shop? "Quirky! I think is a very good description. We are really looking forward to our first Christmas - Church Street is so busy with people and we are a great place to stop by for a chat," finished Donna.

The Norfolk Pigeon Loft opens from 9.30 to 5pm Monday to Saturday, plus some Sundays. www.norfolkpigeonloft.co.uk

Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm Project In response to the recent news that Statoil and Statkraft have acquired the Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm project, NNDC Cabinet Member for Business Enterprise and Economic Development and Deputy Leader, Tom FitzPatrick, said “North Norfolk District Council welcomes this exciting announcement. The council has had an excellent working relationship with Statoil and Statkraft over a number of years during the building of the Sheringham Shoal offshore windfarm. That project is

proving very beneficial for the people and the economy of the district, providing jobs and advanced technical skills. We are confident that the development of the Dudgeon windfarm, which lies 20 miles north of Cromer, by companies that clearly have great faith in the district, will ensure that North Norfolk remains at the forefront of offshore energy technology.

Cuts to Cromer’s ambulance service overturned following Act on Ambulances campaign

A u-turn on cuts to the ambulance service in Cromer has been hailed a success for “people power” by Act on Ambulances campaigners.

At the end of September, as the 6500-signature petition was gathering momentum, the present Chief Executive of the Trust Hayden Newton announced that he would be returning ambulance vehicles back to Cromer which would lead to more hours per week, on top of the new Rapid Response Vehicle proposed for the town.

North Norfolk Labour Party, which organised the petition, has claimed the success is an example of “people power” as public pressure asked the Trust to think again.

The Trust has since also agreed to continue to review performance in north Norfolk on a monthly basis, and the Labour Party is urging members of the public to continue to keep up the pressure by signing the petition at www.actonambulances.co.uk.

Labour Party campaigners outside the East of England Ambulance Service Trust building in Cambourne armed with the 6500-signature petition.

CROMER WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

At the October meeting of Cromer WI members had a nostalgic afternoon remembering the past. Tony Ireland, who had replaced the scheduled speaker at very short notice, gave members a musical quiz based on the music of old TV programmes, playing the themes on his keyboard, then asking questions and giving more information about the programmes and the actors in them. All the music was recognised, from “Crossroads” through “Pot Black” and other sporting themes to “Z Cars”. Everyone had a wonderful time singing along and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. After welcoming members and visitors, President Miriam Ireland

At the end of September party leaders made the trip to Cambourne in Cambridgeshire to meet with the Trust to call for more support in North Walsham – which is still at risk from government cuts to the NHS.

Residents and visitors can email their stories about north Norfolk's ambulance service to mail@actonambulances.co.uk or write to Act On Ambulances, Party, Thrums,The Hill, Happisburgh, NR12 0PW.

congratulated the Cromer WI Brass Tray Quiz team for coming a very close second to Overstrand WI, who were the overall winners. There will be classes in willow weaving and sugar craft, both to be held before Christmas, and tickets are available for the Fashion Show on Wednesday 7 November in the Community Hall at 7pm. The competition for a Halloween cup cake was won by Hazel Patrickson, who had made a scary spider. The afternoon ended with readings of poetry and prose.

The next meeting will be held on Thursday 8 November in the Community Hall, Garden Street, beginning at 2.30pm. This is the AGM of Cromer WI and for anyone interested it is an opportunity to learn what the WI has achieved in the past year, and what the plans are for 2013.

Northrepps Primary School

Northrepps Primary School is celebrating its largest intake of reception aged children. This September ten youngsters joined the school and all have settled in well enjoying life at 'big school'.

During the summer holidays a ÂŁ35,000 refurbishment took place improving the infant classroom and their outdoor learning area. The school now enjoys two play areas with rubberised safety surfaces... so much kinder on the knees if the inevitable falling over happens... and a fantastic new climbing frame with slide which is proving very popular!

Northrepps Primary will be holding an Open Morning on Thursday 22 November between 9.30 and 11am. If you have a child due to start school next September please do come and have a look around, meet the staff and children - you will be most welcome!

East Runton Fun Day

Funds were raised in aid of the Air Ambulance at the East Runton Football ground on Sunday 26 August when Sadie Caudwell organised her first East Runton Fun Day. Although an early downpour of rain deterred some of the stalls holders and car boot people from turning out, the weather changed and it became a very successful day raising approximately £1000. Sadie would like to thank the Lady Mayor, Gwen Smith, of Cromer for attending and to everyone who kindly donated the prizes.

Norman Lamb MP Supports StartUp Loans for Young People

These occasions would not take place without willing volunteers and Sadie would also like to thank the following those who worked hard and helped on the day: Andreas Yiasimi, Debra, Nyall and Sadie Spurling, Christy Everett, Jules Platten, Chris Key, Jack & William Caudwell all from East Runton, Mark Worman from Leicester and Tim Rees and John Morris from Coventry. Sadie says “Next year we will try to double the amount raised - anyone who is interested in joining our committee and/or helping will be made very welcome”. Roll on 2013.

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb is calling on young entrepreneurs to take advantage of a new scheme to provide loans that will kick-start business ideas. Backing the “StartUp Loans for Young People” scheme, Norman Lamb MP commented “We need the next generation of entrepreneurs to use their energy and ingenuity to be able to bring their ideas to fruition, and to access the financial support they need. This really is a fantastic initiative, and will reap dividends for decades to come. I would strongly urge young people who think they have a good business idea to explore the opportunities offered by StartUp Loans.”

StartUp Loans is a government-backed project, lending up to £2,500 to any young person wanting to start a business.

Foundation East, an Industrial and Provident Society based in Bury St Edmunds, is a delivery partner for the scheme in the East of England. Their website is: www.foundationeast.org

A Handful of Magic at Sheringham Little Theatre

And this year’s seasonal offering sees Jack and The Beanstalk burst on to stage in a frenzy of festive foliage at the Little Theatre.

Opening on Wednesday 5 December and running until Saturday 5 January, the production promises more than a touch of magic for young and old alike.

Written and directed by West End star Killian Donnelly, one of the male leads in Phantom of the Opera, it will offer a stunning selection box of singing, dancing and jolly panto japes, according to theatre director Debbie Thompson.

“We are so excited to have Killian’s involvement this year – it should be a truly outstanding show,” she said. “We have some wonderful special effects planned - which we are, of course, keeping under wraps and have signed up a superb cast who will really bring the whole performance to life.”

Stepping back into the spotlight at the Little Theatre will be delicious dame Russel Hicken. This year he’ll be slipping into his colourful collection of outrageous costumes as Molly Coddle, Jack’s mother.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Last time, we mentioned the little cat that was missing but had not been chipped. Unfortunately the person who was thought to have taken her said this was not the case and she appears to have disappeared without trace. As she was a pedigree cat we believe she has been stolen and her owner deeply regrets not having her chipped. Talking to other branches of Cats Protection on a Cat Forum it is apparent that the situation regarding stray and unwanted cats is the worst we have experienced as a charity. However, compared to some areas of the country we are quite fortunate. Although we have a waiting list for cats to come in, we do not have to limit this to stray cats and can, given time, take those that are in a home at present, but for whatever reason need to find a new one. The general consensus also indicates that fewer people are coming forward to offer cats and kittens new homes. Perhaps some are under the misapprehension that we charge a lot of money, but this is not the case. Looking at the ‘dreaded’ websites we see cats and kittens being offered for far more money and without the health checks, vaccinations and routine treatments ours have all received. Others are being sensible and considering the costs they could incur owning a pet should it become ill or have an accident and maybe deciding that they can only afford one where in the past they might have given a home to two. These are worrying times but we will continue to help as many cats and kittens as we can. Earlier this year we launched a “Free Neutering” campaign and several vets in the area agreed to participate. Although this was intended for those who were having difficulty in paying for the operation and to prevent more litters of unwanted kittens, we know that people who could afford to pay took advantage of the offer. The offer has now closed and approximately £12,000 of branch funds have been spent on this. Because Stephanie receives so many calls about neutering it has been decided to set up a special phone line to take these calls. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat in future please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible) and not Stephanie. If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535 858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.

Fee, fye, fo, fum – the panto’s back in Sheringham!

And joining him on stage will be Cornelius Garret, playing Jack’s father. Cornelius is also returning to the venue, having played the role of the evil Abanazar back in 2010.

“We have some new faces too,” said Debbie. “We are lucky enough to have Jonathan Broderick with us this year, playing Jack, and Rachel Waring, as Jill. Both these young actors have recently graduated from drama school. “Then we have hilarious double act James Lavender and Benedict Martin, who will be taking on the roles of Ralph and Snotmill.” This year’s spectacular set will be designed once again by Matt Nunn. Ron and Charlotte Sayer are returning to oversee the music and Kate Withers will be back to create a fantastic collection of costumes.

“We cannot wait to get started on the rehearsals,” admitted Debbie. “Last year’s pantomime, Dick Whittingham, was marvellous, and we hope this year’s show will be just as much fun.”

Jack and the Beanstalk runs at Sheringham Little Theatre from Wednesday, December 5th to Saturday, January 5th.

Be safe and respect others this Bonfire Night

People across the county planning to celebrate Bonfire Night are being urged to be considerate to others.

Norfolk Constabulary officers will be working with residents, partner agencies and local businesses aiming to make sure that celebrations are safe and enjoyable for everyone. Additional officers will be on duty for what can be one of the busiest periods of the policing calendar.

As in previous years, planning and preparation for this peak time of year is a multi-agency effort including: Norfolk Fire & Rescue Service, Norfolk County Council through Trading Standards and the Youth Offending Team, as well as other local authority resources.

Inspector Mark Cant said: “We want everyone to have an enjoyable Bonfire Night – we urge everyone to have fun, stay safe and respect residents in their neighbourhood.”

Richard Herrell, Group Manager for Community Fire Protection, Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service said: “Every year we work with our partners around Halloween and Bonfire Night. We hope everyone, retailers, customers and our communities enjoy themselves and have a safe and enjoyable time."

Protecting Norfolk’s Wildlife for the Future Cromer Times #409 November 3rd 2012

Cromer and District Garden Society

Our Autumn Show at the end of September went off well. The number of people entering exhibits was the same as last year but overall entries were down. Given the vagaries of the weather this year this was not that surprising but disappointing nevertheless. Derek Pardon won best in section for flowers, Pat Titley came out top in both the cookery and fruit and vegetable sections, Ann Barnard won the handicrafts section and Mrs J Matthews was top for flower arranging. Karen Hilling was the winner of our club competition. Monica Gepp won the Royal Horticultural Society’s Banksian Medal for most points gained in our two shows in 2012. Ann Bridge and Richard

Hobbs from the Norfolk and Norwich Horticultural Society were the judges. Well done to all the prize winners and helpers.

At our October meeting we were given a presentation by Mike Stew on his work photographing the changes that have been made to woods at Swanton Novers. He was asked by Natural Pupils from the Belfry School at Overstrand helping president, Bill LeGrice of England to LeGrice Garden Centre at Wroxham Barns, plant a tree in the school grounds produce a which was their prize for winning the society’s competition for schools season by Our next meeting is on Thursday 8 season record of the improvements November in the Community Hall in that have been made to this ancient Cromer. We will hold our AGM at 7pm woodland and the end result was a series and this will be followed by a cookery of stunning photographs showing the demonstration by Val Lodge. She will be fauna and flora of this part of North giving us tips on how to make the most of Norfolk in all its glory. By removing the fruit and vegetables we grow each year. scrub and undergrowth and by coppicing Visitors are very welcome. Cost £2. on a regular basis it is possible to increase light levels by up to 20% and this encourages the growth of a wider range of plants and shrubs.

The winning entry in the flower section of our show, Derek Pardon’s display of chrysanthemums

Cromer Flower Club

In October we had a lovely meeting with the demonstrator Crystal Dyball. Crystal always lifts our spirits with her lovely designs and funny anecdotes about life in Norfolk. Each arrangement was different and one in particular, a welcome ring with orange berries and carnations and Hypericum berries, was very pleasing and would grace any door or porch now and for Christmas.

Crystal judged our competition entitled ‘Autumn Glory’ and was very complimentary over the standard of exhibits. Best in show was Jill Breeze.

Our next meeting is on Monday 19 November at 7.30pm at Cromer Junior School with Adele Kent demonstrating ‘Well Heeled’.

Visitors are welcome to come and enjoy a free evening in November.

Cromer Christmas Lights Continued from front cover...

The roads are not wide enough for us to use a cherry picker, so we carry out most of the work from ladders. Most of the festoons are stored without the lamps in, so they are put in while we run the cable off the drum. Over the last couple of years we have replaced the majority of lamps to low power LED, these use 1 watt per lamp, they are not glass, so they will not break and they last much longer than their incandescent predecessors.

Every year we raise the funds required to buy any new pieces, repair the old ones, store all the equipment, pay for the electricity to run the lights, insure the whole thing, run the switch on and organise associated events like the poster competition. Usually we ask local businesses to donate funds, but this year we thought that we would try something different - instead of money, the businesses have donated goods that we can raffle to raise funds. This is the 36th year that the volunteers have organised the Christmas lights in Cromer and

one of the original team, Vera Woodcock, is still the main driver behind all our activities. This year we have a new committee, and as is usually the case, we are trying different ideas out, some of which may work, some may not, but one constant is the hard work and enthusiasm of the team of volunteers who turn out for the twelve Sunday mornings needed to put up and take down the lights. It is really good to see new faces over the last couple of years, a mixture of men and women of varying ages have joined the ranks of the installation team together with a brand new fund raising team. A great example of the partnership between the volunteers and local businesses came on the second week we were out this year, when one of the team members realised that our hard hats were out of date. Two local firms, Travis Perkins and Fisher Bullen, quickly came to the rescue and donated 15 new hats. Our fund raising team have had a terrific response to the raffle appeal with donations coming in from as far as Norwich. There will be a raffle, a stall in the church for the Christmas market and, possibly, an auction. We are offering businesses the chance to sponsor some of our set pieces, and we will be collecting at Morrisons on Saturday 24 November. Fund raising activities will continue throughout the year, if any of you have ideas to help we would love to hear them. We think that it is a nice idea to get local

people to switch the lights on, after all we all donate our time for the townspeople. This year the four winners of our poster competition from Overstrand, Roughton, Northrepps and Cromer junior schools will help Natasha Smith, the Olympic torch bearer from the high school to light up the town. The council are organising a Christmas market around the switch on - the market starts at lunch time on Friday 30 November and runs through to Saturday 1 December tea time. There will be a wide selection of stalls, the charity market in the church and an indoor market in the parish hall, a marquee in high street will house entertainment. We are always looking for new volunteers, either to help with the installation or to

organise things behind the scenes, if you would like to join us call Paul or Bernice on 01263 512436 or email paul@cromerchristmaslights.org.uk or keep up to date by visiting our website www.cromerchristmaslights.org.uk or follow us on Facebook or Twitter.

Waitrose North Walsham calls for community groups to apply for funding Waitrose in North the communities in which it trades and will

Waitrose North Walsham is calling out to local charities and community groups in north Norfolk to apply for its charitable giving scheme, Community Matters.

The programme at Waitrose North Walsham offers three local organisations a proportion of a £1,000 fund every month.

Customers decide how the fund is allocated by using a green token given to them at the checkouts to vote for the charity they would like to support. The amount available to the good causes reflects the customer votes, meaning an organisation with 33% of the vote would receive a £333 donation.

Ashley Broad, Branch Manager at the new,

North Norfolk Speakers Club

North Norfolk Speakers Club hosted the Area Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contest last month at Rossi’s Leisure, North Walsham.

The event was well supported by members and guests from North Norfolk, Norwich, Dereham and Brandon Speakers Clubs.

President Gillian Beecroft opened the evening with a welcome speech before handing the floor to the Contest Chair, David McNaughter.

Contestants delivered speeches of a very high calibre and Stuart Richards from North Norfolk Speakers Club consolidated his success at club level by winning the Humorous Speech Contest, against stiff competition. James Allison from Norwich Speakers club ably secured his well deserved place in the next round, winning the Table Topics Contest.

Both successful contestants will represent the Area at the Regional stage of the contest to be held in Cambridge on Saturday 13th October.

Left to right- Table Topics winner James Allison (Norwich Speakers club), Humorous Speech winner Stuart Richards (North Norfolk Speakers Club) with Contest Chair David McNaughter

Autumn’s upon us...

It has been a marvellous year if you’re a slug or snail, but for the rest of wildlife and for us gardeners included it has been unpredictable and far from ideal. The strange start to the year adversely affected our frogs as warm water encouraged early spawning, only to be scuppered by the torrential downpours of colder rainwater in mid to late spring. Our butterfly numbers have also had a massive decline this year due to the same weather, and many ground-nesting species including underground bees have had similarly poor breeding success.

Despite the weather, it has been a very busy year for Barry and Rob’s Gardening Services. We diligently work in all weathers (excepting a few jobs!) to offer a professional and friendly garden creation and maintenance service. Our success however is down to our wonderful clients and gratitude must go to them for offering us many interesting challenges with much reward from the services we have offered. We have put together wildlife ponds, erected numerous types of fences, tidied borders, laid turf, planted shrubs and flowers, mowed and treated lawns, made vegetable plots including raised beds, planted and maintained orchards, trimmed hedges, felled and pruned trees as well as hung bird boxes and provided many people with useful advice on wildlife-friendly gardening.

From little acorns... It has now been over a year since our first appearance in local magazines and since we first started our new business. November is the time of year that most things in our gardens and around our countryside are coming to a close: annuals have completed their lifecycles, perennials and shrubs have all produced seed and berries, and birds are beginning to flock around our gardens. Jays are very busy caching acorns for the winter and look overhead for Pink-Footed Geese arriving from Greenland.

Grow mighty Oaks... Autumn is very much upon us and now is the ideal time to look at planning for a new garden year. It is an exceptional time to think what you want for your garden in the coming year – do you need new fencing or hedging to help divide or border your garden; would you prefer a classic, formal look or a less formal setting? Perhaps a secret garden or secluded oasis where you can relax from the stresses of life? All this and lots more can be achieved with a little foresight, planning and know-how, and now is a great time to start.

Barry and Rob’s Gardening Services can offer single garden jobs such as garden clearance, landscaping, hedges or fencing, to the smaller jobs such as single border tidy-ups, fruit tree pruning, leaf sweeping, pond clearance or small trees. Alternatively we can offer a regular visit tailored to your needs – weekly, fortnightly or monthly as required. We pride ourselves on offering a professional service which fits with our clients’ needs. Hopefully the upcoming gardening year will be far better for our gardens and wildlife and we will be basking in glorious sunshine next summer, not paddling like ducks.

Method 1. Heat a non-stick frying pan 2. Add the diced onions and cherry tomatoes, sweat them off until the onion is clarified and the tomatoes are slightly soft.

3. Add the toasted pecans and gnocchi and continue to cook untill gnocchi is soft. 4. To this add the honey, and season. 5. In a separate pan heat up a little olive oil until slightly smoking, add the strips of duck breast and sear on each side until the skin is crispy and the duck is cooked to your liking. 6. Once the duck is cooked, set aside to rest and in the gnocchi pan. 7. Add the spinach leaves and wilt. 8. Put the gnocchi mix in the centre of your plate and place the duck strips on top. 9. Add your garnish and drizzle the plate with the balsamic vinegar. We use Gressingham duck because it is extremely well looked-after, tender and delicious. It sits perfectly alongside the Rocheburg Shiraz that the maitre d’ found lurking in the cellar of our wine merchant – powerful and smokey with smooth, ripe redcurrants and a Western Cape kick (the wine, not the merchant).

Historic Lodge Wins North Norfolk Conservation and Design Award

The 2012 North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) Graham Allen Award has been won by a ‘weekend retreat’ which was once the favourite of Edward VII. The retreat, now The Gunton Arms at Thorpe Market, dates from the 19th Century and was the former lodge to Gunton Hall. The building had been in decline and looked to be following the same route as so many other traditional watering holes. However, considerable intervention, restoration and re-modelling has breathed new life into this important Grade II Listed Building. The owner’s intention from the outset was to reinstate the building’s original character and architectural features. North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member for Planning, Rhodri Oliver, said “This is an

excellent example of a restoration scheme that respects the original structure. The scheme pays close attention to detail and new elements complement the historic structure. The building has been brought back to life and is a credit to everyone involved and to North Norfolk as a whole”.

A modern piece of contemporary design has been highly commended. The Atrium, North Walsham, perfectly marries community needs with innovative spaces and striking design. The judges said the building was a bold architectural statement which has added another dimension to community facilities in the town.

This year two schemes received a commendation, Moor Hall Farm, Briston and Brookside and Blogg Cottage, Kelling. Moor Hall Farm saw the restoration of a derelict 18th Century farm house

and outbuildings with the addition of a striking three-storey ‘tower’. The scheme at Kelling saw the sensitive refurbishment of Brookside Cottage and the erection of the matching Blogg Cottage. This project was praised for its locally distinctive approach, vernacular design and overall contribution to the setting and appearance of the Kelling Conservation Area. The awards were presented at North Norfolk District Council’s offices on 8 October by Edward Allen, the eldest son of the late Graham Allen who was the first chairman of North Norfolk District Council. For more information on the Graham Allen Awards call Phil Godwin, NNDC Conservation Design and Landscape Manager on (01263) 516131 or Paul Rhymes, Conservation and Design Officer on (01263) 516367.

Dear Margaret

We picked up a copy of The Cromer Times at the Tourist Information Centre. We had our touring caravan stored at West Runton for the season and we had come for a few days to take it to Sea Palling where we were leaving it for the next year.

The van was very green and grubby outside as we weren’t allowed to clean it at the West Runton site so we were very pleased to see a car wash advertised in your Services Directory. We rang Roughton Hand Car Wash and although he hadn’t done a caravan before he said he would have a go.

Well he did a really good job and the 11 year old van looks lovely. He was very reasonable too so you can imagine we are very pleased.

When we are next down in Norfolk we will be sure to get a copy of The Cromer Times.

Thank you Yours sincerely Ray and Jean Taylor Leicester

Friends of Cromer Museum

Our series of winter talks began with a talk by Peter Stibbons on “Cromer in 1840”. A number of sources from this period allow us to put together a very clear picture of what Cromer was like in the early years of Queen Victoria’s reign. Drawings by the Buxton sisters and a visitor from London called Mr Marten show that many of the features we have come to associate with Cromer were present by this time. A new jetty was in place, bathing huts were on the beach, coal ships from Hartlepool were pulled up on the shore and the lighthouse (then coal fired) was in use. The sea off Cromer was very busy with shipping of all shapes and sizes. The church had no nave and the familiar sweep of paths and slopes from the town to the beach was beginning to take shape.

The tithe map of 1844 shows how small the town was at this time. Garden Street was the extent of the town to the west and the beginning of the Crescent was the easternmost extent. Nothing much extended beyond Mount Street and West Street to the south. The apportionment sheet shows that over 90% of the land was owned by Lady Listowel. The census of 1841 shows that women outnumbered men by 703 to 534. Servants made up the largest group for occupations. There were 56 fishermen. Mary, Elizabeth and Sarah were the most common female names.

Eye witness accounts are also very useful sources. One describes the damage done to the shore by a very severe storm on 17-18 February 1836. As a result of this damage steps were taken in 1838 to put in place the first proper sea wall and defences paid for by a local rate. The wall was in place by 1845 and the Cromer Protection Committee took on responsibility for its maintenance, a job it fulfilled until 1948. Sources that individually seem of limited importance take on a whole new significance when looked at together.

Our next meeting is on Friday 16 November in the Community Hall, Cromer at 7.30pm. Alistair Murphy, the curator of Cromer Museum, will talk on “Cromer Portraits”. All are welcome. Cost £2. Cromer Times #409 November 3rd 2012
