Acne & Acne Scarring Acne is a very common condition. It can be controlled, but untreated acne can cause unsightly scars. As always prevention is best and here we share our experience of acne treatment.

What causes acne? Acne occurs when the oil production by sebaceous glands does not reach the surface of the skin but is trapped in tiny pores or follicles. This plug may close off the pore, causing the follicle wall to bulge, which creates a whitehead. If the pore stays open, the top surface of the plug may become darkened, causing a blackhead. In both cases, the bacteria P acnes, thrives in the clogged follicles. When the bacteria and pus leak from the follicle into the surrounding tissue, the pimples are formed. Uncontrolled infection and inflammation causes large, red lumps and scarring.

Why is it hard to control? Unfortunately, Acne is something most of us have experienced at one time or another. As many as three out of four teenagers have experienced it to some extent. It is most prevalent during adolescence because hormonal changes stimulate the sebaceous glands (oil glands) into producing more sebum (oil), increasing the chance of acne. While most people outgrow acne in their late teens or early twenties, many continue to be affected much longer. Aggravation of acne in later life may occur with menstrual periods, use of contraceptive pills, use of oil-based products and stress. There is some association with fatty and sugary foods.

Why treatment is important? Uncontrolled acne can cause scarring in the skin which can persist long term. It is important to treat active acne aggressively to avoid unsightly scarring. Active acne can affect self-esteem and can be associated with

negative body image. You may have heard that “blackheads are dirt”, “only teens have acne”, “junk foods cause acne”, or “it will just go away by itself”. These and other myths have prevented many from seeking the appropriate acne treatment for years. Now there is a safer, easier way to treat acne.

Are there any side affects? Unlike other topical treatments, treatments with blue Light, diamond microdermabrasion and gentle chemical peels have minimal adverse side effects or patient discomfort. These treatments are gentle and do not harm surrounding tissues.

What results can I expect? After two to four treatments, most patients experience a reduction in the severity of their acne and the number of pimples. As we are all different, the response to treatment can be variable. We can design an individual training programme at consultation. Sometimes we combine treatments for best results.

What about acne scarring? Acne scarring can be treated very well with modern technology. Most red scars can be reduced or eliminated with gentle lasers but textural irregularities require CO2 laser resurfacing which can cause a few days of redness and swelling. For deeper scars we offer minor surgical procedures such as punch

Campaigners criticise North Norfolk man’s three hour wait for ambulance

Campaigners against the move to cut the ambulance service have criticised a heart attack patient's three-hour wait for an ambulance in Sheringham.

A 999 call was made for James Sadler, 65, on Sunday 28 October at 4.45pm when his wife suspected he was having a heart attack.

Although paramedics were quick on the scene, it was not until 7.45pm that the ambulance arrived at his home to rush him to hospital. The first ambulance that had been called to Mr Sadler’s home was diverted elsewhere, while a second was delayed because the driver had to fill the vehicle with petrol.

The incident is yet another worrying story about ambulance response times in north Norfolk.

Denise Burke handing over results of the petition to the Chief Executive of the East of England Ambulance Service Trust Hayden Newton and chair Maria Ball.

Denise Burke from the North Norfolk Labour Party, which set up the Act on Ambulances campaign, said “These horror stories about ambulance response times in north Norfolk only represent the bigger picture before the government cuts have hit. As demand continues to grow across the country we remain deeply worried about what will happen when we arrive in the busy winter months, which is when Norfolk loses approximately seven double-staffed ambulances.”

She added: “The East of England Ambulance Service Trust has pledged to review the cuts in north Norfolk on a monthly basis, and so we hope that patients like the family of Mr Sadler will continue to speak up about their experiences.”

The local Labour Party is continuing the petition against the cuts through the winter months. Residents can log on to www.actonambulances.co.uk or write to Act on Ambulances, 40 Hempstead Road, Holt, Norfolk, NR25 6DF.

Improvements for Cromer, Sheringham and Wells car parks

Repairs and improvements will be taking place at North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) car parks in Cromer, Sheringham and Wells this month.

Three car parks are involved, The Meadows car park in Cromer, Station Approach car park in Sheringham and Stearman’s Yard car park in Wells. Following a competitive tender process, the contract for the work has been awarded to Thrower and Rutland Ltd. of Felthorpe.

The work in all three areas involves resurfacing and relining, and where possible car parking spaces will be reconfigured to increase the total number of spaces. In all cases the number of disabled driver spaces will be retained or increased. The total cost will be nearly £160,000.

In all cases completion is due by the end of November so as not to interfere with Christmas shoppers. All three car parks will remain open during the course of the work, although the number of available spaces will be reduced and there might be some temporary inconvenience to drivers.

The work planned for November is the third phase in NNDC’s rolling programme of car park repairs. In 2010 £38,000 was spent refurbishing the East Cliff car park in Sheringham, while in 2011 £92,000 was spent repairing Vicarage Street car park in North Walsham, the Chequers car park in Sheringham and Queens Road car park in F akenham.

NNDC Cabinet Member for Corporate Assets Rhodri Oliver said, “Car parks are vital for our towns, for local residents and our tourist visitors alike, and it’s very important that they are kept in good condition."

Local Shop is delighted to receive the resounding message that 'You Rock'

A prestigious national magazine, 'Soul & Spirit', asked its estimated 100,000 readers to vote for their favourite spiritual shop. After two years as a runner up Gail & Danny Hickling, owners of Little Gems in Mount Street in Cromer, were thrilled to be told that this year they had been awarded the 'Gold Winner' of this category.

Danny, who started the shop in Cromer with his business partner Gail nearly thirteen years ago, says "many of our customers are very dedicated to the products we sell, regularly travelling from London, the South East and Midlands specifically just to buy the crystals and gemstone jewellery they desire. Over the years we have established a name for ourselves within this field - we constantly try to add new products to our range, buying direct from source and picking our crystals by hand usually from the country of origin.

Danny plans to fit in a visit to Brazil to buy in their Spring range before the busy Christmas sales begin.

“Mission His Way”. This is a charity which works with the poorest misplaced adults and children in Uganda providing education, homes and medical assistance as required.

Jo Waite took on the driving duties for the climbers Adam Griggs, Jason Hawkins, Steven Drake and Raphael Neil. Adam said: “We normally arrange a collection at Christmas for Ian but this year we thought about doing something different, something we could do as a team effort.” At least £900 was raised by the team’s successful attempt. Ian Mutton (SMG Managing Director) said he was overwhelmed by the help offered. “It’s incredible to have staff who are prepared to support your charity work,” he said.

The planned itinerary commenced in Fort William (Scotland) at 5:00am on Saturday 19th and the challenge was completed on returning to Llanberis (Wales) by 5:00am on Sunday 16th.

Refusal of Treatment and End of Life Care By Miranda Marshall, Partner at Hayes + Storr

The two major professions of Law and Medicine inter-connect in the emotionally-charged subject of end of life care directives.

The Mental Capacity Act 2005 (“the Act”) greatly aided doctors by standardising the assessment of mental capacity and setting out what was needed in ‘best interests’ decisions in patients who lack mental capacity. The Act also created the Advance Directive (“AD”) (colloquially known as a “Living Will”) and the Lasting Power of Attorney - Health and Welfare (“LPA-H&W”). Enduring or Lasting Powers of Attorney relating to property and affairs have been possible since 1985, but the area of health and personal welfare was uncharted and dangerous legal territory.

Put simply, an AD allows you to specify in advance what treatment etc. you do or do not want in the future if you are ever mentally incapable of such decisions for yourself; whereas an LPA-H&W allows you to appoint one or more persons whom you trust to make decisions on your behalf, should you lack capacity.

It is important to make a distinction between ‘treatment’ and ‘care’. Healthcare professionals recognise four different classes

of treatment: preventative, curative, palliative and life-sustaining. The differentiation relates to the intention rather than the type of treatment and some treatments may fall into more than one category.

Whereas the first three classes of treatment are fairly easy to define, what is ‘life-sustaining’ is not. It was therefore intentional that the Act did not provide a definition and so it has been left open to allow clinical professional judgement to be exercised. It is very much dependent on the context. Doctors are able to withdraw active treatment if it becomes apparent that survival will not happen and in such cases the questions of ‘dignity’ and ‘comfort’ become over-riding. The medical profession recommends that lawyers should not to be too restrictive in drafting ADs as to do so can ultimately prevent the doctors exercising their professional judgement as to what is right in the circumstances. Clinicians are skilled and experienced in such decisions and have a professional duty to provide the best possible end-of-life care. Working with the Attorney or other appointed person the doctor can tailor the care in each

A sorrowful "MacTail"

Do you remember "H" our last "Tail"? Well he finally found his dream home and even has a new girlfriend in Lily, a lovely fawn greyhound. This "Tail" is just as sad as "H's" in that a beautiful blue male greyhound living happily with his best friend Judy, a female greyhound, suddenly had his life completely turned upside down when both he and Judy lost their home and had to be re-homed separately. Mac found the change very difficult, lost weight, became an even bigger baby than he was already and his new family did not meet his needs.

Mac is now back with us and is still the very lovely boy we first homed (albeit thinner). He is housetrained, very affectionate, needs lots of TLC and will be the best friend a similarly loving person can have. Mac will be quite clingy at first, and probably later, but this is an endearing characteristic. If there is a lonely female greyhound out there then Mac would be the perfect pal, not that we are a dating agency at all!

If you think you could give Mac a loving home and would like to meet him, get more information or arrange a home check, contact Homefinding Co-ordinator David Jones (Beeston Regis) through the Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinders local rate call number 0845 458 3797

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We are always pleased to see our cats and kittens leave for loving new homes but especially so when the cat(s) in question have come into care and, because of their age/health, we believe they will be with us for some time. When Stephanie was contacted to take Pebbles and Mudge into care (two 16 year old cats whose owner had recently died), she had concerns that once with us they would have to wait a long time before someone was prepared to give them a new home. To receive a telephone call the same day from a person who wanted older cats and did not mind what colour or sex providing they were healthy, was really good news for these delightful cats. They hardly had time to settle in, go for their vet check and be vaccinated before they were off to their new home together.

Interest has also been shown in Trinnie, a lovely little tabby and white cat, 13 years young who requires medication for hyperthyroidism and, fingers crossed, she will have left for a new home when you read this article. Hyperthyroidism is quite common in older cats (Spice, one of my older girls, has recently been diagnosed with this condition) but it is easily treated. However, it takes a little time to get under control and if, like Spice, your cat does not like taking tablets a little guile has to be used. Hiding the tablet in some meat has solved the problem for us. Plans are now well advanced for our Christmas Sale in the St Benet’s Hall, North Walsham on 17th November and we hope that lots of our friends and supporters will be able to join us there.

Rescue and rehoming

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.

If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Are you considering a new pet? There are many local rescue centres inundated with animals requiring homes, however before embarking on a rescue crusade there are things you need to consider: COST - You will need to feed/vaccinate/worm/de-flea/neuter/cover unexpected vets bills and make a donation to the rescue centre. CARE - You will need to provide adequate walks and play for whatever breed or species you take on COMPANY - Consider how much time you will be able to spend with your new pet when they first arrive, a puppy that has just come from a large litter going into a home where he will be completely alone for hours on end will probably become withdrawn and may develop separation anxiety issues. VACCINATIONS - Starting at £60 for the complete puppy course (2 injections 2 weeks apart) this vaccination gives protection from some of the most deadly canine diseases including Lepotospirosis which can be transferred to humans. Starting from £57 for the complete kitten course (2 injections 3 weeks apart) this vaccination give protection against Flu, Enteritis and Leukaemia all of which can be fatal. WORMING - Essential for puppies and kittens from around 2 weeks of age when still with mum, then at 10-12 weeks (around the time of 2nd Vaccination) then monthly until 6 months, at which point a 3 monthly regime should be continued for life. Many worm species pose a risk to human health. FLEA CONTROL - Also an important, on-going part of responsible pet ownership, monthly flea and tick control is essential for happy healthy pets. Cost approx. £30/month (20kg dog) – fleas and tick, £23/month for cat – including worm control and mite control INSURANCE - An essential, though not yet legal, requirement of dog/cat ownership. You need to read the small print of each policy to ensure you are getting the cover you require. Beware of 12 month policies, often cheaper monthly costs but will only cover a condition for a year, after which you will not be able to make further claims. Rough guide to cost – Labrador puppy in Sheringham £30/month, Domestic Short Haired kitten living in Sheringham £15/month. Having talked mostly about puppies and kittens above, the same applies for any age pet you may take on, they will still need regular vaccinations, worming etc despite their age. Insurance costs will vary for older animals. RESCUING - If you have considered all the costs and other implications of becoming a pet owner and are still keen to go ahead it can be very rewarding, a companion to come home to or a great way to get some exercise with your dog. Rescue centres are often full to capacity of various breeds, usually a lot of Staffy type dogs are available. This particular breed make very loyal companions though as with any breed or species their compatibility with other dogs, cats or children in the family needs to be investigated prior to adoption. Often these animals have been dumped, neglected or abused by previous owners leaving them scared and vulnerable. With little history available about their past it can be difficult to assess their temperament without a little trial and error, usually after a few weeks in the rescue centre the staff have the measure of these animals and will make recommendations about their ideal home and situation. Be guided by advice – not how cute they are!

01263 822293

PLEASE – do not be tempted to buy or rescue a pet as a Christmas or birthday present for someone. All too often these animals end up in rescue themselves as un-wanted gifts or unsuitable pets. Many rescue centres have a non-rehoming policy over the weeks leading up to Christmas for this very reason.

Sheringham & Cromer Choral Society

Voices Young and Old join together for Britten Saint Nicolas

On Saturday 8 December at 7.30pm Cromer Parish Church will resound to the wonderful and miraculous story of Saint Nicolas (better known in England as Santa Claus or Father Christmas) as told in Benjamin Britten’s witty and dramatic Cantata. Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society, directed by Nathan Waring, mark the centenary year of Britten’s birth as part of Britten 100, celebrating the life and work of the great composer. They will be joined for this performance by the Jiminies from Gresham’s Prep School. This is particularly apt as Benjamin Britten was himself a pupil at Gresham’s School.

This concert takes place close to St Nicolas Day (December 6) which, whilst little celebrated in the UK, is a major feast day in much of mainland Europe, particularly Sweden and Germany. In Cromer’s twin town of Nidda, St Nicolas brings gifts for the children on 6 December not 25 December as is the tradition here.

Tickets priced £10 on the door and from Sheringham Little Theatre Box Office 01263 822347. For further details please visit www.sheringhamandcromerchoral.co.uk

Concert Notes: St Nicolas was the first major work which Britten composed specifically for

non-professional forces. The sometimes jaunty, sometimes dramatic music speeds us through the life of this wonderful saint from birth , through dramatic shipwreck to Palestine and onwards to be bishop of Myra and then prison. And then the miracles and the dramatic high of the cantata "Nicolas and the Pickled Boys". The cantata brilliantly and entertainingly portrays the devotion, piety and marvellous works of the man we now know as Santa Claus or Father Christmas.

National Trust launches search for Norfolk’s good talkers The National Trust is looking for people from Norfolk to speak up on its behalf.

The charity is expanding its team of volunteer speakers to meet growing demand and wants to hear from anyone interested in spreading the word about the Trust’s work and ideology.

Speakers visit groups, organisations and societies to give fascinating and entertaining illustrated talks on a wide range of subjects, from heritage and history to wildlife and the outdoors.

Jennie Jordan, Talk Service regional manager, said: “We’ve revamped our popular Talk Service and would love to hear from anyone from Norfolk interested in joining the team to give talks on behalf of the

National Trust. It helps to have experience of public speaking but if you like people and have enthusiasm for the Trust and its philosophy then we will support you and provide training.”

The National Trust was set up in 1895 with a mission to protect places of historic interest and natural beauty forever, for everyone. These days it is one of the largest landowners in the country and cares for a wide variety of historic buildings, nature reserves and stretches of coastline.

The revamped Talk Service features new speakers, new topics and new digital technology, meaning the Trust can provide everything required, including projectors and sound systems.

Jennie added: “The Talk Service is a great way for people to learn all about the National Trust and our work, either out of curiosity, for fun or as preparation for visiting one the many beautiful places we care for. “We now have a wide range of fascinating subjects on offer, from the history of the National Trust, our historic houses and different periods of history to talks about gardening, the coast and the countryside. There really is something for everyone.”

Popular subjects include how Humphry Repton created Sheringham Park, discovery of the Sutton Hoo treasure and the top secret military history of Orford Ness.

Talks usually last about 40 to 60 minutes and are fully illustrated. The service is free but, being a charity, the National Trust asks for a small donation – usually around £1 for each member of the audience – and for the speaker’s travel expenses to be paid.

For more information about the Talk Service or to make a booking please call 01284 747566 or email talkserviceenquiries@nationaltrust.org.uk

MP for North Norfolk takes to the shop floor

MP Norman Lamb left his day job behind and took to the shop floor in a bid to encourage more people to volunteer at the Barnardo’s shop at 25 Market Place, North Walsham earlier this month.

The North Norfolk MP rolled up his sleeves and volunteered at the store as part of national Make a Difference Day. It’s the UK’s biggest day of volunteering, and provides opportunities for thousands of people to volunteer across the country.

A Christmas Lunch on the Train

How about revelling in the romance of the restaurant car as a Christmas treat? The Poppy Line’s crack “North Norfolkman” dining train will be running a Christmas lunch special on Sunday 16 December. Advance bookings are essential.

The theme of this year’s event is: “Everyone has a skill they can use to help others. What can you do?” and although the event’s official date was Saturday 27 October, activities still took place across the UK at the beginning of November.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said “Make a Difference Day is a great initiative to encourage people to use their skills to help others. We can all do something, big or small. It was a real pleasure to help out with the volunteers at Barnardo’s in North Walsham and if you have been thinking about volunteering I would encourage you to get in touch.”

Karen Tuthill, North Walsham Store manager, said: “It’s been fantastic to have our MP’s support in helping us to appeal for more volunteers. Norman Lamb helped us on Saturday and hopefully we will have more volunteers come forward as a result!

“We always welcome new volunteers to our friendly team in North Walsham. There are roles to suit all and you can do as much or as little as you can manage. If you have time on your hands and would like to get out and about, please do pop in for more information, or visit the Barnardo’s website at www.barnardos.org.uk/volunteering.”

The steam train is scheduled to leave Sheringham at 12.40pm, and will run twice to Holt and back while passengers tuck into a mouth-watering 3-course menu including (of course) roast turkey. Salmon in white wine and broccoli and stilton crumble are also offered. The price of £42.50 per person includes the train fare. The interesting wine selection features a sparkling Prosecco, and wine prices start at just £14.95 a bottle.

So if you don’t want to visit the Enchanted Grotto on one of the Poppy Line’s famous Santa Specials, why not book up for the lunch train instead? Places are limited, so don’t delay – call 01263 820800 or visit www.nnrailway.co.uk.

BLUE ROOM CAFE Santa Specials - Steam-hauled Santa Specials run from Sheringham to the Enchanted Grotto at Weybourne on the first three weekends in December, and from December 21st up to and including Christmas Eve. Santa has a specially-chosen present for all children from 1 to 14, and there’s a glass of sherry and a mince pie for grown-ups on the train, and a soft drink and chocolate treat for the children. Prices range from £13.50 to £16, depending on date and time of departure. Advance bookings are essential, so Santa can get his presents ready. Call 01263 820 800 or visit www.nnrailway.co.uk

Concert Review

held on Sunday 28 October at Templewood, Northrepps

JOHN PAUL EKINS - Piano Cromer Music Evenings in conjunction with the Cromer & Sheringham Arts Festival (COAST) presented pianist John Paul Ekins to open their concert programme for the 2012/13 series.

This young artist proved to be immensely mature in interpretation, possessing innate technical qualities and charisma, enhanced by a brief but very informative summary of each composer’s background relating to the pieces played and performing works by Mozart, Schubert, Liszt, Ravel and Schumann in today’s recital.

Mozart’s Adagio in B minor KV 540 was written in 1788 at a time when his health was failing. This Adagio was the only piece in which Mozart wrote in B minor and it is said that because his fear of death was so strong he used this key, with its dark tonal effect, which matched his mood at the time - but surprisingly the last 12 bars were written in the tonic major.

Schubert’s View Impromptus D.899/1&4 - two works which bore no relation to each other, as the first played mirrored Schubert’s views on mortality as he became ill at 20 years old, the music full of pathos and dark tonalities was played with great feeling as if today’s artist fully understood the mood of Schubert at the time.

The next Impromptu in A flat major, in complete contrast to the first with the melodic line mainly in the bass to start with, was embellished by delicate groups of semi quavers as broken chords in the treble. Then came the middle section where the melodic line was in the treble. Here the key changed to C sharp minor, creating deep passion where Ekins maintained the quality of the melody even though it required accompaniment with full chords in both clefs, so impressive.

Liszt’s Benediction de Dieu dans la Solitude S.173/3 - a composition written over 7 years consisted of 10 pieces. This wonderful work demanded virtuosic technique which seemed effortless to this pianist. Ravel’s Sonatine written in 1903, in sonata form, with the last movement being described as a violent toccata, delighted his audience. Schumann’s Etudes Symphoniques Op 13., a work of 9 variations described as compositionally extraordinary, certainly was the case performed with great authority - confirming that which was evident in the opening piece, that John Paul Ekins has a great future as a soloist and chamber musician who already is received with great acclaim in the UK, as a private teacher and taking part in workshops and master class recitals. North Norfolk loo blocks flushed with success! North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) new loo blocks in Happisburgh and Sheringham have both Gold Awards in the 2012 Loo of the Year Awards. The Happisburgh toilets have also been achieved shortlisted Category Award for England and a Market Sector Award for Car Parks. for a National

The two toilet blocks both built for NNDC by Thrower & Rutland of Felthorpe and designed by Stead Mutton & Griggs of Sheringham, were among 1432 entries from across the UK including Male, Female, Accessible, Changing Places and Family (baby change) loos, which required Loo of the Year inspectors to visit and judge over 5,000 individual toilets over the summer. The inspection process covered 100 criteria including signage, décor and maintenance, fixtures and fittings, cleanliness and overall management and customer care. The 2012 Awards were sponsored by Lepicol, The Changing Places Consortium, Clos-o-Mat, The Toilet and Washroom Cleaning Company and are supported by the four national tourism bodies in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. OVERSTRAND GARDENING CLUB

This month the club was lucky to welcome back Charlotte Philcox, organic gardener, consultant, writer and broadcaster speaking, this time, on “Holly, Ivy and Mistletoe”.

Their use in the winter time dates from well before Christianity when pagans believed they would ward off evil spirits and witches, as well as act as symbols of love, life and fertility.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER THE WINTER GREENHOUSE

The winter greenhouse can be a very depressing place. The tomato plants have been cut down from their supports and the green tomatoes put on the staging to ripen. Pot plants are looking tired and are either consigned to the compost heap or cut down to overwinter underneath the staging. The lawnmower, garden furniture and children’s toys are thrown in to await the spring.

However it is possible to keep gardening in your greenhouse throughout the winter and I am going to try to produce colourful flowers and some edible crops even though the days are getting shorter and colder and there is no special heating.

It is surprising that many gardeners who grow excellent summer crops in their greenhouses fail to use them for vegetable production in winter and early spring. A small sowing of a lettuce such as ‘Little Gem’ can be made in October and the resulting seedlings pricked out and spaced out in a seed tray and grown on in the best possible light and covered with fleece if the weather gets really cold. In December the plants are moved into 3 ½ inch pots and carefully watered and fed. Growing the lettuces in pots allows for good air circulation and reduces the threat of fungal infections such as Botrytis.

Cutting begins as soon as they are large

Cromer Times #410 November 17th 2012

enough. The first pickings will be good leaves which will make excellent salads. The remaining plants will develop hearts and can be cut as required. Using this method fresh and tasty lettuce can be cut as needed over an extended cropping period when commercial supplies tend to be insipid and expensive.

To bring colour into the greenhouse I am experimenting with winter pansies and violas. They are often a little disappointing when grown outside as they fall prey to rain, wind and snow and of course the attentions of slugs and snails who seem to have a preference for the petals over the stems and leaves. Buying several trays of pansies and violas from local garden centres and violas I have put them the plants into one litre pots and displayed them on the greenhouse staging where I can look them in the eye. I will now be able to see whether it is too warm or dry for them under glass or whether they will enjoy the extra care and protection. I will report back.

of them, violas carry many more flowers but they are smaller. Violas also tend to be tougher and more weather resistant. On the basis that it is preferable to have many small flowers rather than one or two larger ones I have concentrated on violas and currently have fifty or more little plants, all subtly different flowering in the greenhouse. Only time will tell whether they will be too coddled and develop some form of disease but it will be fun trying and hopefully I will have a good display to fight those winter blues that many gardeners suffer. Other suggestions for your winter greenhouse include bulbs especially prepared hyacinths and daffodils and why not try some potatoes which are now in the garden centres especially designed to be grown in containers and give you some new potatoes deep in winter.

Bob Wilkinson

Winter pansies and violas were developed by breeders with three features in mind, the capacity to flower in the short days of winter, tolerance of extreme weather and the ability to stay compact and not stretch and fall over when mild weather eventually comes. In general pansies produce larger flowers but not many

Watch out for signs of Arthritis

With the darker evenings and colder weather now upon us our dogs, like us, may be inclined to have less exercise, put on weight and possibly start to feel arthritic joints.

What is Arthritis? Arthritis is a problem with the joints and often causes inflammation and chronic pain. Because your dog cannot tell you what is wrong it is important to look out for the symptoms.

The symptoms of Arthritis : • Reluctance to use a particular limb. • Discomfort when rising, sitting or standing; especially after resting. • Visibly stiff/sluggish use of limbs. • Difficulty climbing stairs. • Weight gain. • Decreased interest in play or exercise. • Change in behaviour or attitude.

Feeding: If our canine friends are doing less exercise, the aim must be that they

get a lower energy diet, either by feeding less and bulking up with vegetables or using one of the lighter diets. Obesity has been shown to lead to greater problems with arthritis.

Other treatments: Your Veterinary Surgeon can prescribe painkillers to keep the joint more comfortable and hence keep your dog moving and active. Other treatments that can help are Chondroitin and Glucosamine which may help to feed joints that are feeling a bit past it. Aquatherapy- getting your dog to swim in a controlled environment so as to exercise while not bearing their own weight. I know of several patients who have benefitted from a regular swim. Acupuncture: another way of helping with painful, arthritic joints. Some dogs find this very helpful.

As with any illness or ailment, if you have any questions or concerns do not hesitate to contact your vet.

BBC Two’s Antiques Road Trip comes to Sheringham

The historic Henry Ramey Upcher lifeboat housed in the Fishermen’s Heritage Centre in Sheringham has recently been featured in the popular BBC Two’s Antiques Road Trip.

OR: 07776 216659

PICTURE FRAMING SERVICE A RT GA LLERY · GIFT SH O P The Gallery Norfolk offers a handpicked selection of paintings, prints, photographs, ceramics, jewellery and stylish gifts

Around the time the Fisherman’s Heritage Centre was due to open at Easter this year, the Sheringham Society had a visit from the producers of the BBC television series Antiques Road Trip who thought they might like to include a short piece about the Henry Ramey Upcher lifeboat in the programme. The team spent most of the morning looking round the Fishermen’s Heritage Centre, getting ideas for the programme. At 9.05 on the morning of 18th May the TV team arrived and finally departed about 3 pm with the TV crew taking many retakes as the RAF had chosen that morning to practise manoeuvres over Sheringham, causing numerous interruptions!

The presenter Mark Hales must have been filmed about 20 times coming through the door saying something along the lines of “Wow, it’s huge, is this really a rowing boat?”

Built in 1894, the lifeboat which is over 34 feet in length and made from oak planking, saved 202 lives in very difficult circumstances.

Dear Margaret

It is about this time of year when Councillors begin to think about their budgets for their Councils for the following financial year. Perhaps they could start by reducing the relatively high payment they now receive as a Councillor. In earlier years elected members of the Council undertook the work as a privilege to serve the community at large at no cost. Yours sincerely Yvonne Nolan Cromer Times #410 November 17th 2012

Plea for more family time from one in five children added: the cinema together, 50% playing sport and Mumsnet co-founder and CEO Justine Roberts 52% on walks. "It's all too easy to end up spending all One in five 8-11 year olds want to spend more time with their parents and more than a third of parents said they want to spend more free time with their kids, new research for the National Trust has found.

While watching television and DVDs tops the YouGov poll as the most common way for parents and children to spend time together in the UK 26% of children aged 8-11 years old and nearly half (49%) of all parents surveyed said they would like to spend more time together just going for a walk.

To help families get out on an Autumn walk, users of the website Mumsnet have provided some top tips on making sure that parents have got everything ready for a fun day out such as climbing a huge hill, flying a kite or hunting for some treasure on a beach.

Simon Pryor, Natural Environment Director at the National Trust, said: “Despite the fact that TV seems to be dominating family life its really encouraging that children and parents want to spend more time together and that walking is seen as a great way of doing just that. Walking is a brilliant way for families to spend time together, get fit and discover the joy of the British countryside. And with so many great activities taking place at National Trust properties around the country there’s no better time to get out and go on a walking adventure.”

family time in front of screens, watching TV or playing video games. Spending time with the children outdoors can be just as cheap as well as fun and educational and offers a bit of balance in a world dominated by X-Factor and Fifa 12."

Dr William Bird, a GP and an expert in environment and health, said: "Children can benefit hugely from walking in the outdoors. High blood pressure, cholesterol and depression can be detected in children as young as 10, due to inactivity. Spending time with family, in the outdoors, can invigorate even the most TV or X-box-obsessed children!"

Families can also download free family friendly trails from

www.nationaltrust.org.uk/gr eatbritishwalk and they can also

share their favourite walks online for the chance to win a stay in a National Trust holiday cottage.

Other findings from the research include: Eighty one per cent of children aged 8 to 11 surveyed said they watched TV and DVDs with their parents in their free time, 69% go on activity trips and days out, while 66% go to the park together, 61 per cent said they went go to

When asked the same question, parents of children 18 and under who spend their free time together, answered slightly differently but TV still came out top, with 72%. According to parents, the second most common joint activity was going to the park (47%), followed by going on activity/day trips (46%) and going walking ranked fourth with 37%.

When asked which activities they’d like to do more with their children, 18 and under parents said day trips were the only activity that was more popular than walking, with 56% of parents saying they would like to go on more joint outings with their kids, compared to 49% that said they’d like to spend more time on walks with their children.

The 8 to 11 year olds surveyed said they’d like to spend more time with their parents doing outdoor activities such as going to the park (47%) and playing sport (46%).

Over half of the parents surveyed (54%) said they spend more time with their children than their own parents did. And one in three (35%) of parents said that they would like to spend more leisure time with their children.

Not surprisingly, the figures for teenagers (12-15 year olds) wanting to spend more time with their parents (13%) drop off though only 2% of 12-15 year olds want to spend less time with their parents.

Government toughens up community sentences Government reforms will ensure that every adult community sentence will include a form of punishment after research showed that this is more effective in reducing reoffending. People will also be given a right to request restorative justice, a change the Liberal Democrats called for at their recent conference.

Community-based punishments are more effective at reducing reoffending than short prison terms but have been seen by some as a “soft option”. Currently only around twothirds of community orders contain a punitive requirement, such as a curfew, fine, or unpaid work. These changes will see that figure rise significantly in future to almost all adult community sentences.

MP Norman Lamb said “The key is to have sentences that are effective at protecting the

public and in stopping reoffending. Short term sentences are costly and ineffective, with reoffending rates scandalously high.

Community-based punishments for less serious offences are the sensible approach. The Liberal Democrats have always said let’s follow the evidence so I welcome this announcement that will increase the use and effectiveness of community sentencing, as well as reassuring the public.”

Liberal Democrat Councillor Brian Hannah has championed restorative justice in Norfolk. Last year he appeared before the Home Affairs Select Committee to talk about the programme in the county.

Commenting on the announcement, Cllr Hannah said “As the local champion of Restorative Justice, I fully support the

There is a vast body of evidence showing that restorative approaches can help cut crime and reoffending, particularly among young people. Restorative justice is not the ‘easy option’ that some people fear: it actually works, and it forces perpetrators of crime to see first-hand the effects of their offending behaviour.”
