Community Stunned
There was utter disbelief as police confirmed the names of the couple involved in the tragic fatal shooting incident in Cromer at the beginning of the month.
Colleagues at NNDC joined with neighbours, friends and acquaintances both in Cromer but also the surrounding area to offer condolences to the family of Keith and Andrea Johnson.
Statement from North Norfolk District Council Chief Executive, Sheila Oxtoby on the news of the deaths of Council Leader Keith Johnson and his wife, Andrea:
‘It is with enormous shock and huge sadness that we have learned of the deaths of Council Leader Keith Johnson and his wife Andrea. Keith was a highly respected and much loved Member of North Norfolk District Council. He will be greatly missed by the Council and his
death is a great loss to the whole community. Keith and Andrea were well known by many people in the district and our thoughts and prayers go out to both their families and close friends.’ Sheila Oxtoby CEO, North Norfolk District Council
Councillors this afternoon and we have agreed that, as Keith's deputy, I should become acting group leader while we are all allowed time to grieve and to consider the future.
"Keith and Andrea were wonderful people and we shall remember them always with affection."
Statement issued by Tom Fitzpatrick, the Deputy Leader of North Norfolk District Council, following a meeting of the Conservative Council Group on the day the news was released:
"It was with great sadness that we received the news of the deaths of Keith and Andrea Johnson. Keith was a conscientious colleague, committed public servant and, above all, a great friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and all those who knew and loved them.
"I have met with my fellow Conservative
A message from North Norfolk policing commander Supt Carl Edwards
The Norfolk and Suffolk Joint Major Investigation Team (MIT) are continuing with their detailed investigation into the circumstances of the deaths of a couple, believed to be Andrea and Keith Johnson, at Compit Hills on Sunday 2 December. I would like to reassure the community that we are not seeking anyone else in relation to the deaths. Local neighbourhood officers and PCSOs remain at the scene and will be working with the MIT over the coming days to support and reassure the families and community affected by this tragic event.

Di Cooke, who devised, directed and choreographed, has created a highly professional and massively entertaining show along with Nigel Hogg, Musical Director and arranger. Olly Day linked the whole show brilliantly in a lighthearted and entertaining way, assisted in no "little" way by Jo Little, comedienne, who's personality and talent shone through. The two lead singers, Lulu Alexander and Cromers own Eddie Bushell gave us tremendous performances with great solo efforts, but also featured in the whole company scenes. Lulu also gave us a brief glimpse of her talent as a championship skater. Helen Gulston and James Morgan who are part of the superb Seaside Special Dancers joined Lulu and Eddie to great effect as the Christmas Quartet. The Seaside Special dancers gave their usual talented, enthusiastic and high octane performance supported by the delightful and extremely talented children of Marlene's School of Dancing. Marlene also provided the brilliant members of the Youth Choir who linked well with the professional cast members. We can certainly be proud of our local performers. The scenery was designed by Ian Westbrook at 3D Creations, costumes by Laura Whyte and sound and lighting by Amanda Hill added greatly to the enjoyment of the show. A very talented bunch. This is a fantastic show which runs until 30th December so book early to get into the Christmas Spirit. WARNING: DO NOT BE LATE TAKING YOUR SEATS AS YOU WILL MISS A VERY SPECIAL OPENING WHICH INCLUDES SOME LOCAL CHARACTERS YOU MAY RECOGNISE.

Council launches Empty Property Matching Service to mark Empty Homes Week
Cromer East Side Shopping
The traders from Bond Street, along Church Street to the traffic lights and up Mount Street up to the top of Bond Street would like to encourage more people to walk beyond The Church and visit us.
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has launched a new free service to help put people with an empty property to sell in touch with those who want to buy them.
At the edge of the town we are often overlooked by shoppers both local and visiting. We would like to say it is worth taking a few extra steps to browse the shops, have a coffee or meal and use the range of services on offer.
The North Norfolk Empty Property Matching Service will provide particulars of empty properties and alongside it a list of people seeking to buy empty properties in the North Norfolk district. General particulars (personal details will be kept confidential) are available on the NNDC website and the service also has its own dedicated phone line and email contact address.
The launch took place during Empty Homes Week at the end of November. The week is organised by the charity Empty Homes to highlight the waste of empty property nationwide, and to celebrate the success of numerous examples and new initiatives to bring empty homes back into use and to encourage more widespread action.
NNDC Cabinet Member for Strategic Housing Trevor Ivory said, “This council is determined to bring empty homes back into use. We have 887 long-term empty properties on the NNDC Council Tax records and I hope schemes like the Empty Homes Matching Service will help people to bring them back to life. Houses should be lived in, not left empty, and if people aren’t willing to take action themselves, then we are perfectly prepared to take enforcement action at the appropriate time if we have to.”
To find out more about the NNDC Empty Property Matching Service, visit www.northnorfolk.org/housing/ phone 01263 516299 or email emptyhomes@north-norfolk.gov.uk

Cromer Music Evenings
Review of concert held on Sunday, 25 November at Templewood, Northrepps Bogdan Vacarescu (violin) and Heidi Parsons (Cello)
Cromer Music Evenings maintained the high standard now expected at Templewood in presenting two world class artists who delighted almost a full house with a well chosen programme.
Contrary to the order, Heidi Parsons opened with J S Bach’s Cello Suite No 1 in G Major. The Prelude to begin this set of dances is usual but is not always the case, as often the Allemande is the first item followed by Courante, Sarabande, Bourees and Gigue the suite of five dances. Being unaccompanied this can leave the performer exposed to the listener regarding intonation and tone quality - both were absolutely sublime in the hands of this master of the instrument.
The Chaconne from Partita ll for Violin solo by J S Bach, again unaccompanied, captured an intimate rapport with the audience, adding even more to an atmosphere of musical excitement.
Maurice Ravel’s Sonate for Violin and Cello in four movements was written in memory of Ravel’s friendship with Debussy. This piece encapsulated almost everything required of accomplished string players. This, amongst the dissonant passages and the beautiful unusual lyrical lines from the wailing sounds of the Lento movement to the aggressive double stopping where the chords played, with almost a percussive effect, was riveting to witness.
After the interval, Niccolo Paganini’s Duetto ll (Tre Duetti Concertanti) for violin and cello displayed the magnetic rapport between the two artists and was unblemished, as they accompanied each other’s playing of the melodic line.
The Concert Variations on "The Last Rose of Summer" by H W Ernst for solo violin consisted of a myriad of improvisatory snippets and was performed with ease and yes, humorous ideas, conjured up, I’m sure, as the performance progressed by none other than Vacarescu himself! Passacaglia (frei nach Handel) by Johan Halvorsen was the final piece in what proved to be the highlight of Cromer Music Evenings current series. Terry Keeler

Police cold caller warning Police are reminding residents to be vigilant to cold callers in the run-up to Christmas.
The warning comes as ACPOs (Association of Chief Police Officers) National Burglary Awareness campaign focuses on distraction burglary – crimes where people trick or distract residents in order to gain entry to their property.
The most common form is for people to pretend to be from a water company, gas or electric provider and trick the homeowner into thinking they need urgent access to his phone. Other methods include pretending to be doing repairs or maintenance or impersonating figures of authority to enter homes.
Detective Sergeant Pete Jessop, from Norfolk Constabulary’s Operation RADAR team, which specialises in doorstep crime, said while offences had fallen significantly in recent years it still pays to be vigilant.
“I would urge people to remain vigilant when they receive a knock on their door. Cold callers are men or women or make up stories to gain access to a person’s home to steal and will often prey on the vulnerable such as the elderly.
“If you do decide to open the door to someone, ensure that you ask for identification and certainly think twice before inviting anyone
Cromer Times #412 December 15th 2012
into your house. A genuine caller should not mind you checking.”
Police would also give the following advice:
• Close and lock the back door before answering the front door
• Use a spy hole or window to look at the caller before answering the door.
• Elderly householders should be on their guard and members of the public who have an elderly or vulnerable neighbour or relative should be vigilant.
• Always ask for identification from any unexpected callers and do not let anyone in if you are not comfortable with who they are.
• Phone the company or organization the caller claims to be from while the caller waits outside. • Tell someone you trust about uninvited callers to your home.
• If necessary, report it to police with a description of the people involved and details of their vehicles if possible.

Shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child
Sometimes we watch the news, see people in need and think, 'But what can I do?' In 1990 a man in North Wales saw a report about orphanages in Romania.
He decided he would organise a relief collection. In among the toys and toiletries sent were some shoeboxes, covered in Christmas paper and filled with treats.
Operation Christmas Child was born! By 1995 the annual event had grown so much that an international charity, Samaritan's Purse, was approached to take on what was a logistical nightmare.
Last year 1.1 million shoeboxes were sent to twelve countries and hopefully by Christmas Day this year the 100 millionth gift-filled shoebox will have been delivered.
Harry with one of the many boxes piled up and ready to go to Samaritans Purse.
And yet the need is so great that a child who receives a shoebox this year is unlikely ever to get another. The charity which began with one person continues to be about individuals.
Each person who fills a shoebox is making a difference.
On Sunday 18 November members and friends of St. Andrew`s Methodist Church, Sheringham, brought a total of 121 gaily wrapped shoe boxes which they had filled with toys, toiletries, hats, scarves, gloves, educational items, to the church, ready to be sent to this very worthwhile charity.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
On 17 November we held our Christmas Sale in the St Benets Hall, North Walsham and I am happy to report that £1623.32 was raised for the cats in our care. Despite the rain, the sale was very well attended and a steady stream of customers passed through the doors.
We always enjoy this event as so many friends and fellow cat lovers come and support us and those who have had cats from us update us with news of their beloved companions. Cats like Vikki, re-homed by us in 2004, had always lived outside until she came into care but now never attempts to set a foot outdoors, even when she goes round the country with her family in their caravan. Vikki sends us postcards from the many places she visits and is a much travelled cat. Also, looking at photographs of two kittens which left for a new home in the summer with two of our new volunteers, Rachel and Ant, and seeing how much they have grown; or talking to the couple who asked for our help, having bought a holiday cottage and discovering they had a feral colony living close by, which was rapidly increasing in size and using their garden as a toilet. They trapped all the cats, took the adults to be neutered and
brought the kittens to us to be re-homed. So many stories we could tell and so many cats we have helped over the years.
As this is the last edition of The Cromer Timed before Christmas we would like to thank everyone who has supported us during the Nimrod - looking at him now it is hard to believe he year and wish them a Happy Christmas and a was underweight and poorly when he arrived in care Healthy and Prosperous New Year.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.
If, however, you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).
A Bit of Christmas Magic
Members of Animal Magic Dog Club were delighted when Santa took time out from his busy schedule to drop into the Christmas Show last month. The annual event raised over £600 in aid of local charity PACT Animal Sanctuary. During these difficult economic times the Sanctuary is seeing donations fall while the number of animals needing urgent help is increasing, so were over the moon at the generosity shown by club members. Animal Magic Dog Club based near North Walsham is a fun, family orientated club offering a wide range of training.

Christmas is coming…………..
The tinsel is out, the tree is up and fairy lights are a plenty! In the canine and feline world however, Christmas is not such a fun time. There is sometimes a lot of disruption to everyday life with more people in the house, some of them not very well known. The cat’s usual sleeping place on the spare bed is suddenly unavailable and there is a great big tree in the front room! So, sometimes our pets get upset at Christmas and when you really stop to think, it’s no surprise why. With so much sudden change, a dog or cat with an already nervous disposition may well be tipped over the edge and start protesting with strange and somewhat unwelcome behaviours. Cats may start to urinate or ‘scent mark’ in the house, they may become more vocal and start picking fights with their housemates – of any species. Dogs tend to get vocal and disruptive; the tree may be used as a lavatory, after all that’s what trees are for outside – silly humans for bringing them inside! There are things you can do to relive the stress on your pets but most of all you need to consider them in your plans. Try to keep their routine as close to ‘normal’ as possible. Provide an alternative bed if the spare room is unavailable, maybe a crate with a blanket draped over. The cat may insist on sleeping on top of the wardrobe for the duration of the festivities, let them, as this is where they feel comfortable with everything that is going on.
01263 822293
Some other tips for Christmas with animals Don’t buy a pet as a present – so many end up as unwanted gifts and in rescue homes by New Year. Don’t feed your dog chocolate – it is toxic to dogs – they can become extremely unwell and some quantities of dark chocolate can be fatal. Provide a den or use a plug-in calming device (available from the surgery) to ease the nerves of stressed animals when everyone arrives for Christmas. Keep routines as normal as possible If you are worried about your pet’s behaviour during Christmas or at any other time during the year do get in touch with the nurses at Sheringham for some sound advice.
We would like to wish all of our clients a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year

Motoring Future Comes to North Norfolk
The future of motoring has arrived in North Norfolk after local car retailer Crayford and Abbs Ltd was appointed to join Nissan’s expanding elite band network of specialist EV (Electric Vehicle) outlets last month.
The exciting appointment means the Bodham dealership is now able to sell and service the groundbreaking Nissan LEAF – the world’s bestselling 100% electric car.
It follows a period of intensive manufacturer-led training for dealership staff and the appointment of James Abbs as a dedicated Electric Vehicle Relationship Manager on hand to assist customers with all driving and ownership queries.
And Kevin Abbs is predicting no shortage of interest in the stunning LEAF – the 2011 World and European Car of the Year – from potential customers eager to experience its winning combination of zero-emissions, ultra low running costs and effortless practicality.
A spacious and generously equipped family hatchback, the LEAF is capable of travelling up to 109 miles on a single charge which could cost as little as £2.03 on an overnight electricity tariff. In addition, its zero-emission battery-powered motor means it’s completely exempt from road tax and the London Congestion Charge. Meanwhile, Crayford and Abbs Ltd will also become a popular destination for existing LEAF Cre a drivers as it has been Tea m s fitted with a high-tech charging point – part Sp Crab of an ever expanding ec i alit nationwide network. ies

Kevin Abbs said:
“This is absolutely fantastic news for our business and for the region’s motorists. By becoming a Nissan specialist EV dealer we have effectively made 100% electric motoring an affordable and practical reality for the motorists of North Norfolk”
He added: “The Nissan LEAF is an incredible vehicle which drives and handles just like a conventionally-powered car. But the benefits are amazing. The running costs are super low while trips to the filling station and forking out for things like road tax and congestion charges instantly become a thing of the past.
“Plus, of course, LEAF drivers have the added benefit of knowing they are not adding to their carbon footprint and are helping the environment.”
The Nissan LEAF is available now priced from £25,900 (including a £5,000 government grant).
For more information about the Nissan LEAF, or to book a test drive, visit Crayford and Abbs’s Bodham showroom or call James or Kevin now on 01263588160

Cromer’s New Year’s Day Firework Display
All eyes will be on the skies above Cromer Pier at 5pm on 1 January 2013 for the traditional New Year’s Day Firework display, and organisers hope as many people as possible will again come to Cromer for the day – but urge them not to leave it until the last minute to come to Cromer.
“We’re delighted it’s become such a successful annual event, and with plenty of good vantage points to watch the display, come early, we don’t want anyone to miss it,” says Firework Committee Chairman Jim Bond.
“The idea has always been to bring people up to the coast for a breath of fresh air, something to eat and drink, and a fabulous firework display over the sea fired from Cromer Pier at 5pm.
"This year, 1 January is a Tuesday, so linger longer and enjoy the evening. Cafés, pubs and restaurants will also be open, so there'll be plenty of places to get a cuppa or something stronger."
There will also be teas and coffees in the Church with musical accompaniment, and mulled wine outside.
Raising over £4,000 for local good causes – and funding the following year’s display – the annual display attracts up to 8,000 people
into Cromer on New Year’s Day.
"This year’s show will be as spectacular as in previous years. We have been planning and building the show over the last few months and are hoping more than ever to produce effects that will light up the sea in a variety of colours, but this, as always, is all weather dependent
MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR CUSTOMERS 16
3pm FUN RUN Work off those New Year’s Eve excesses with a gentle jog along Cromer Prom – or a five minute dash if you’re up to it! North Norfolk Beach Runners are organising their annual One Mile Fun Run as a curtain-raiser for the firework display at 5pm. Starting from the pier forecourt at 3pm, the run is open to all ages and abilities, with categories for under 13 year-olds, 14-16 year-olds, seniors and even Fancy Dress. Registration will take place from 2.30pm on the pier forecourt for a fee of £1.
4.30pm TORCHLIGHT PROCESSION As every year since the first display in 2000, there will be a ‘torchlight’ procession from the churchyard at 4.30pm, with light-sabres and
lanterns available to buy during the afternoon outside Cromer Museum (next to the Church). Mulled wine will again be served outside the museum, with tea, coffee, and hot soup available in the church. Throughout the afternoon there will also be musical entertainment in the church for everyone to enjoy. Local cafés, pubs, shops and restaurants will also be open, the local butcher will be having a BBQ outside his shop from 3pm and other vendors are planning to ensure the crowds who descend on Cromer won’t go hungry. If you made a New Year resolution to learn to surf, the Glide Surf School and Cedar House Surf Shop will be open from 10am to 4pm.
Please see the Town Council website (www.cromertown.org) and Facebook page (‘New Year's Day Fireworks, Cromer’) for a list of some of the traders who will be participating.
“Please give generously”
Donations from spectators last year raised over £9,000, which is divided between funding the following year’s display and local charities. “Everyone’s aware that budgets are still tight, but we do ask people give as generously as they can,” says Jim Bond. “Just a few coins can make a lot of difference to local charities and good causes – and without everyone’s help we couldn’t continue the annual display.” Visitors are urged to arrive in Cromer as early as possible on New Year’s Day. All three town car parks will be open. Runton Road car park will be charging a fixed charge of £2 per car for all day parking from 2pm on the day. Normal car park fees will apply on all other car parks.
Please note Cromer Pier will be closed from 8am on New Year’s Day until after the display (7pm approx) although Tides Restaurant will be open.
This year’s Cromer New Year Day Firework Display costs over £5,000. Underwritten by Cromer Town Council, money raised from bucket collections will be divided between local good causes and funding next year’s (2014) display.
Cross those fingers firmly, but since 1 Jan 2000 the weather’s been kind to Cromer’s New Year Day Firework Display. “We’ve had some wet years, and a few chilly ones,” says Jim Bond. “Fortunately we’ve never had a really strong wind which could seriously affect a display from the pier.” Any last minute changes to the event will be announced on local radio, via the Facebook page (‘New Year's Day Fireworks, Cromer’) and twitter (North_lodge_cromer). See page 23 for an idea of how the day pans out for the Firework Team

Cromer Academy Awards Evening A Paralympic hero gave a motivational speech for Cromer Academy’s students at their annual awards event last month.
Jody Cundy, who has won gold medals in swimming and cycling, was the guest of honour and opened the academy’s refurbished gym and dance studio - unveiling a plaque inside the facility.
Visitors and award winners also saw the studio in use as student Laura Barron, current British Schools Gymnast champion showed off her rhythmic gymnastics skills.
After the event, guests were invited to attend the Headteacher’s drinks reception prior to the awards ceremony where Jody was guest speaker along with North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb.
At the awards ceremony, Headteacher Penny Bignell, who took over when Cromer High became at academy in September 2011, played “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen and urged successful students to “not stop” in their quest to be the best that they could be.
She added: “And this is just the beginning. Don’t stop you now. Tonight shows you have taken the first steps towards bigger and better successes. For some it will be gaining your GCSEs, A-levels, university places and fantastic careers for everyone.”
Ex Year 11 students were invited along for the evening and were presented with their GCSE Certificates along with Subject and Special Prizes for individuals.

It was back in June that the Irish performer was persuaded to write and direct the seasonal show for the Norfolk town’s venue, when theatre director Debbie Thompson’s 14 yearold daughter Katie contacted him via Twitter.
“I love doing panto – coming up with the stories and writing the sketches,” he admits. “I was so pleased when Katie asked me if I would be involved. I was excited to be taking my work to such an intimate venue and I had never been to Norfolk before.”
Katie, a pupil at Sheringham High, had been following Killian on Twitter since seeing him star as Raoul in hit musical Phantom of the Opera, at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Haymarket. And, to her surprise, he responded to her suggestion and sent her mother a script for Jack and the Beanstalk.
Originally, says Killian, 28, the plan was that he would direct the entire show but now a co-director, Damien Douglas, has been brought in to help out. “I was really looking forward to doing the whole thing but was then offered the role of Billy’s older brother Tony, in Billy
Elliot,” he explains. “I realised I would not be able to dedicate as much time as I had hoped to the panto so this seemed a good solution.”
Killian, who comes from Kilmessan, in County Meath, Ireland, joined West End show Les Misérables as “a swing” (a cast member who is always ready to substitute a number of minor roles) but quickly won more major parts in the production. He then moved into Phantom and won roles in television shows including The Last Furlong and The Tudors.
“I started in Billy Elliot in November and am finding Tony a great part to play,” he says. “He is a very driven character, who, unlike Billy, is similar to his dad – and doesn’t understand why his brother is into ballet.”
But, says Killian, 2012 has also been an exciting year for him as he has been filming for the new Les Misérables movie, which opens in January, and stars Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter.
“I play Combeferre, one of the students at the ABC Café,” he explains. “I spent two months of the summer filming and I loved working with Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe. They were both so down to earth. I had to get into a fight with Russell Crowe’s character, which was great fun.” Killian says he likes to “put his fingers into

a lot of different pies” but stresses panto remains a passion.
“It is such a joy to do something like a pantomime and to be able to take it to children in Norfolk at Christmas. There really is something quite magical about it all.”

Cromer Academy Switches on to Switching Off! Students of Cromer Academy, led by the EcoTeam, took part in Switch Off Fortnight from 19- 30 November.
During this time, the EcoTeam led a very informative and thought provoking assembly for the whole school and patrolled corridors, ensuring that staff and students had remembered to ‘Switch Off’ any electrical items in their classroom and around the school which were not being used. The results were positive with many classrooms scoring very highly on the EcoTeam’s audit sheet. During the weekly SMSC activity, members of forms were encouraged to make a personal pledge to switch something off at home when they are not using it.
On 28 November, the heating was switched off and students were allowed to wear scarves, coats and hats in lessons to raise awareness of the need to conserve energy. Many students were shocked at how warm the school was! One year 8 student said: “I can’t believe how energy efficient the Academy is. I’m sitting here in my shirt, lovely and warm in the middle of winter, with no heating on. It’s great!”

Cromer Academy student Natasha Smith, one of the Olympic torchbearers in the summer, and the winners of the Christmas poster competition, were on hand to turn on the town’s Christmas lights this year. A rainy day it may have been but not for the evening’s festivities. that did not prevent everyone from having a good time with the street entertainers and at the many Christmas stalls at the Parish Hall and along Church Street and the High Street. There were carols too from Reverend David Court backed by the Salvation Army Brass Band. Chairman of Cromer Voluntary Entertainments Organisation Tony Shipp commented, “I’m sure you would like me to say a big thank you to the team who spent so many weeks putting up the Christmas lights. We also have the crab-pot tree, so a big thank you to John Davies and our local fishermen who gathered 150 pots to make it.” And the crab-pot tree? Well, you either like it or you don’t, but for sure it is different and appropriate for the town. One thing is for sure it’s not the only one - Provincetown, Cape Cod Massachusetts was apparently the inspiration for Cromer’s fishermen. A fun year for Natasha Smith

25%. Three of his four children insisted on exercising their rights, and on that basis, Odile could only have a 44% share of the villa. Those children (who had received substantial assets from their father during his lifetime) also brought a claim that the English estate should discharge their liability for French inheritance tax on the villa. It is worth mentioning as part of the wider picture that the son who agreed that Odile could take his share of the French villa had received his father’s residuary estate worth £40,000,000.

If a decade or so ago, you’d asked your average visitor to Norfolk to name a famous Norfolk person, the chances are they would have chosen either Horatio Nelson or Bernard Matthews.
Bernard has recently posthumously regained media attention, by leaving his English and French estates in such a way that led to some big legal battles between his adopted children and his mistress. Limited space requires me to simplify the facts.
There was abundant evidence that Bernard knew that he was required under French forced- heirship rules to benefit his children by his French estate; but, there was also good evidence that he did not intend that his English estate should bear the tax on his French estate. The French succession rules were applied to the villa and the children received their enforced share; however, under English law the children had to pay the tax on their French inheritance from their own resources as they were unsuccessful in disputing the English Will. It was quite clear that Bernard had never wanted his children to benefit further from his
The dispute arose over Bernard leaving his French villa (with a value of Euro 15,000,000) to Odile, his mistress of 20 years. French succession law imposes ‘forced heirship’, (i.e. you are restricted as to whom you can leave your assets). The French rules required Bernard to give 75% of his French assets to his children and he was only free to leave Odile

Failure to address ambulance targets should trigger u-turn on cuts argues Labour
Cuts to the ambulance fleet in north Norfolk should be overturned after the ambulance service failed to reach vital targets for another month, North Norfolk Labour Party has argued.
The local Labour party, which created the Act on Ambulances petition with over 8000 signatures, was assured by the East of England Ambulance that if demand continued to increase and response times were not addressed in the rota shake-up they would request more funding to ensure all cuts are overturned in north Norfolk.
However, it was revealed in November that the ambulance service in north Norfolk had failed to reach the A8 target to reach at least 75pc of most serious calls within 8 minutes, and fewer than a quarter of Norfolk stroke victims had reached hospital within the 60 minute guidelines.

patients who have suffered from long waits for an ambulance," said Denise Burke of North Norfolk Labour Party. “They highlight the pressure the ambulance service is under with the £50m of government cuts they have to make. The data also shows that even before these cuts were made the ambulance service did not have enough resource to cope with an aging population and increasing demand in north Norfolk.”
The local Labour Party has also been campaigning for MP and Health Minister Norman Lamb to drop his support for cutting ambulance funding. They recently handed in a petition signed by hundreds of constituents urging him to rethink.

Cromer New Year’s Day Fireworks –
Twelve Hours in the Life of the Firework Team
The day’s work starts at 8am on New Year’s Day when Clive Casburn’s team from Premiere Fireworks pull up at the Pier forecourt to unload two vans worth of fireworks and doesn’t end until counting the collection is complete, often not until 8pm.
Clive said “we are looking forward to building, what has become for us, one of the most interesting of our annual displays. The pier, as well as presenting problems has proved a marvellous setting, to enhance our material.
By rigging the whole length of the pier the show can be seen all along the shoreline. Also, by suspending material from the pier, it adds another dimension to the display. The use of aquatic fireworks, surprises the audience every year. The reflections of the fireworks both in the sea and wet sand create a really unbelievable atmosphere”.
“We take great pride in firing this show, which helps in bringing a real celebration to the town and North Norfolk, to welcome in the New Year.”
Pupil worries about speeding outside school
Norman Lamb MP has written to Norfolk County Council about speeding in Gresham village following an email from a young constituent.
Eleanor Bailey, a Year 6 pupil in Kingfisher class at Gresham village school, emailed the MP because of her worries about speeding cars outside the school. She wants to see a 20mph limit both outside the school and in the far end of the village on the way to Cromer.
Every day in the UK, 19 adults and seven children are knocked down and killed or seriously hurt when on foot or bike. Road safety charity Brake is campaigning for local authorities to make 20mph speed limits the norm across built-up areas and for drivers to slow down near schools and shops. In a national hands-up survey conducted in schools, Brake found that 74% of pupils in East Anglia thought that drivers should go slower around their school or home.
In her email Eleanor said “I am a year 6 pupil in Kingfisher class (yrs 4, 5, 6) in Gresham village school. I am taking some of my spare time at home to write to you about the speed limits outside the school. It should be 20mph and regular speed checks around there. As well there should be 20mph around the corner in the far end of the village on the way to Cromer!”
Commenting, her father Arthur said “It is no good saying sorry afterwards; a slight delay will not cause you any problems, but it can save a child’s life.”
Norman Lamb MP said “I commend Eleanor for raising the question of safety around her school. I strongly support the case for 20mph limits, as a matter of course, outside schools. This seems to me to be a very sensible standard principle. Walking and cycling are excellent ways to stay healthy and active so it is a shame that fears about road safety put people off.”
Fortified only by mince pies and mulled wine, the band of collectors have to separate, bag up and count the takings in their buckets. As one regular says, “anyone who’s ever had to count coins will know it’s a dirty job but someone’s got to do it.”
I’m sure we readers will agree with us that everybody involved in the New Year’s Day Firework Display does a really good job and join with us in offering our thanks.

Winners at the Loft The Norfolk Pigeon Loft ran a great fun festive competition, to decorate and accessories a paper template of a Gingerbread person. Entrants then had to name their ginger bread person and write its story, reports Carla Marfleet.
Donna from the Norfolk Pigeon Loft asked Eddie Bushell, Lead male vocalist of the Christmas Seaside Special at Cromer pier, to judge the entries and chose a first, second and third place. Eddie was amazed at all the wonderful 35 gingerbread people on show, which were looking beautifully festive set out in front of the huge Christmas tree in the pavilion theatre bar on the pier.
Donna said, "I cannot believe the enthusiasm and creativity of the entrants. There was such a variety of ideas, some inspired by the festive season, like Santas, snowmen and wintery looks. Some decorated with
buttons, beads, ribbons and feathers. there was a gingerbread chef, complete with recipe book, and gingerbread queen, even a gingerbread mermaid!"
After some hard deliberation, Eddie managed to complete the very difficult task of picking the winners. in third place was Phoebe Muirhead, aged 9 from Cromer with her beautiful gingerbread lady, called GingerBelle the Christmas Fairy.
Second place went to Hazel, aged 17 from Mundesley, hers was called Gingerbread Lake, and was inspired by the ballet Swan Lake. The gingerbread ballerina was in a white dress on one side as the White Swan from the story, turn it over and the other side was in a black dress as the Black Swan.

SHERINGHAM & CROMER LIONS CLUB The Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club have had a busy but enjoyable time over the past few months. Apart from the usual business meetings on the second Tuesday of each month they have had an enjoyable social side. One evening in September some of the members had a guided tour of the historical parts of Great Yarmouth and heard many interesting facts as well as gruesome tales of the past. The tour was followed by a hot supper. Also in September they visited the home and workshops of Wing Commander Ken Wallis who invented the Autogyro and flew “Little Nellie” in the James Bond film “You Only Live Twice”. In October they organised a very successful
“Quiz & Chips” at The Morley Club and are planning to hold another in the New Year. On 27 November the Lions held a Charity Darts Competition in aid of Nelson’s Journey (a charity for bereaved children) and other Lions charities. On Remembrance Sunday the Lions laid poppy wreaths at the war memorials in Cromer, Sheringham and Holt. At present the members are preparing Christmas Hampers for needy families. Most of the items for the hampers have been kindly donated by local shops and supermarkets. The Lions will have a Christmas tree at the Christmas Tree Festival which is being held at St.Andrew’s Church, Sheringham 13th - 18th December and will also be carrying out a street
collection in Sheringham later in December. Again all the proceeds from these two events are in aid of Nelson’s Journey and other Lions charities. Please feel free to come and say hello. If you would like to know more about the Lions or would be interested in coming along to a meeting (meetings held on second and fourth Tuesday of every month at The Morley Club, Sheringham) please contact Hazel or Brian on 01263 821276 or email brihaz@btinternet.com
The members of Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and all the very best for 2013.
Co-operative Travel in Cromer seeks Christmas gifts to fill 'Santa's Suitcase' for Break
The Co-operative Travel store in Cromer is once again seeking donations of Christmas gifts to fill its 'Santa's Suitcase' in aid of north Norfolk-based charity, Break, following an overwhelming response last year.
For the eighth year running, staff at the High Street store are collecting suitable, unwrapped gifts from customers to create a bulging suitcase full of presents for the charity. It will then hand over the festive haul to Break on Friday 21st December. Those wishing to donate are asked to just pop into the store with their gifts over the next week.
The appeal follows an overwhelming response from customers and local residents last year, with the branch taking in enough donations to fill six
suitcases. One generous couple spent £100 at Argos on toys for the cause, and many customers collected attractively packaged toiletries. Sam Antoniades-Cork, Manager at the Cromer branch comments “We were truly stunned by the response to Santa’s Suitcase last year, and Break were over the moon with the kindness and generosity of our customers and local residents. We are very pleased to be supporting Break for the fourth year running; any donations will be gratefully received and will go to a very good home.”
Now in its ninth year, ‘Santa’s Suitcase’ is a network-wide initiative of the Co-operative Travel, which the majority of its 300 stores across the country undertake each Christmas in aid of a local charity of their choice.

Sanders Alert
As a community focused, family owned operator Sanders Coaches, based in North Norfolk want to tell everyone about their success. Now they’re stepping it up a gear and want everyone to join them either on twitter, or by subscribing to email alerts on their website.
By subscribing to twitter, or email alerts people are able to keep up to date with the latest news direct from the companies local headquarters, and any delays which passengers may face. Managing Director Charles Sanders says “Like any business, we face many challenges; however we also see ourselves as a major artery in the local community, enabling a large number of people to either take social visits, or commute. This is one of the reasons to our success”. Charles then went on to mention how he would love to hear from the local community, and encourages his customers, Old and New to contact his dedicated workforce at
the companies head office, either by telephone or email. Contact details can be found below.
A crucial part of their business model now includes words such as transparency, social mobility, accessibility, sustainability and social responsibility. Which is why they raised a massive £899 to support Nick Conrad of Radio Norfolks triathlon challenge, for Children in Need.
operations of their business, providing a lifeline to local people and connections throughout North Norfolk, also providing employment opportunities and training for local people.
Now they’re calling out to the population of North Norfolk to join them both on twitter, on their website and of course on board their regular services throughout the festive period and beyond.
Initiatives such as this will become increasingly frequent, as a way of paying tribute to the North Norfolk population for remaining loyal to their local independent operator. The company faces many challenges within the day to day

£600 tax cut for working families Fuel Duty raise scrapped
Changes to the personal tax allowance announced in today’s Autumn Statement will mean that by April, income tax bills will have been cut by £600 a year.
People working full time on the minimum wage will have seen their income tax bill cut in half. Raising the personal allowance was a flagship Liberal Democrat manifesto commitment.
In Norfolk, 34,040 people have been lifted out of tax altogether since 2010. 312,300 people in the county will get a tax cut from April next year.
North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb welcomed the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement which also included measures to tackle tax avoidance and evasion, extra spending for transport, skills and schools, and cancelling January’s planned increase in fuel duty.
Commenting, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said: “My priority, and the priority of the Liberal Democrats, is to ensure that the wealthiest pay their fair share and to help the ordinary families who need it most. The measures announced today reflect that
commitment: cutting income tax for those on low and middle incomes, cancelling the planned fuel duty rise and increasing the basic state pension by 2.5% in line with the commitment to the triple lock, a Lib Dem manifesto commitment. At the same time, the Coalition Government is clamping down on tax evasion and introducing the first ever General Anti-Abuse Rule – something Labour never did in their thirteen years in power. It is clear that we still have a long way to go to fix our damaged economy, but we are on the right track.”
The Chancellor also announced reforms to the last government’s controversial Private Finance Initiative, which locked some schools, hospitals and Government buildings into poor value contracts, at great expense to the taxpayer.
The Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital was one of the first NHS hospitals to be built under the PFI scheme. The contract was
renegotiated just three years after it was first signed and costs local taxpayers £37.7m for each of the 35 years of the contract.
The new Private Finance 2 (PF2) model will help secure better value by allowing the taxpayer to take a share in projects. The new system will also be more transparent, requiring projects to publish financial performance figures every year. Existing PFI deals have been renegotiated and £2.5bn of savings made.
Commenting, Norman Lamb said:
“The announcement on PFI is really significant. The last Labour government were utterly careless with taxpayers’ money, spending vast sums on these poor value contracts.
“PF2 will ensure that the taxpayer shares in the profits from these projects. In the past, the proceeds simply lined the pockets of private contractors.”

Over the past 21 years together with the local www.faracharityshops.org population and government, FARA has been assisting hundreds of children and young people, many of them with mental and physical disabilities, forgotten and locked away in horrible state institutions, often living a life of daily abuse. We’ve grown into an organisation of excellence, developing innovative programmes to ensure that these marginalised children and young people are able to live a dignifying life and accepted in their own community.
