Mammoth Effort

In late December, the Bingo Club at Bernies in East Runton presented the cheques for their year-long fund-raising efforts. The club meets every Sunday and Monday, organised by Ali Dixon and over the last few years have raised over £14,000 for good causes.

In 2012 they have split the money between Cromer Health Practice and Walsingham Midwives Team (covers North Norfolk). Each received a cheque for £1500. Dr Pam Ripley commented, "The money will be really helpful. It will be used to buy equipment for the practice that is not funded by the NHS. A cholesterol testing machine, which will allow us to give a thumb prick test on site for quick results. Also it will allow us to do SATS tests on babies to check for lung disease which will save patients a trip to Norwich."

Debbie McCoy from the midwives, said, "We will use it to purchase new digital weighing scales as well as a Sonicaid heart monitor. Proprietors of Bernies, Keith & Heather Hindson, said that not many people realise that the Bingo Club is free membership and they raise a fantastic amount of money for their charities. There will be a Quiz & Chip night on March 9th with the Cromer & Sheringham Lions.

"On any given Sunday or Monday there will be at least 30/40 people, sometimes standing room only," commented Ali. "The

Christmas Raffle tonight (and earlier) also raised money for the East Anglian Air - in total we will be giving Jamie Edghill £225."

Back to the 80s

– Rehearsals at Cromer Academy

The 80s is in full swing in the Performing Arts Department at the moment, synthesised sounds and singing voices can be heard from the music room each lunch time and the Drama Studio is packed with extras and the full cast after school twice a week.

Singing is coming along well too - I’ve been particularly impressed with Zeke Daniels singing Footloose as well as a good whole cast rendition of Kids in America (led by featured Year 11 singers, Sophie Abel and Robyn Cummins) that involves over 40 students. Both Rowan and Bethany Adams have been bringing enthusiasm to their respective haracters. Bethany plays the immensely coldhearted and aloof Cyndi with great confidence, whilst Rowan has the role of geeky and

Cromer Times Expands

The Cromer Times will continue to deliver 4700 copies through the letterboxes of residents and businesses in the town through 2013. However we have been asked to expand our coverage into surrounding villages as well as to enable those not on one of our regular rounds to collect their copy from convenient locations. We will now have a circulation of 6,000. The pick-up points so far arranged are listed below - there are more to be agreed which we will list next month. The other two magazines in the Rose Villa Publications group - the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent will also be increasing the number of copies printed - Sheringham will rise to 5600 in total and North Walsham to 6400. They will be covering locations such as Mundesley, Trunch, the Runtons, Holt and Bodham as well as Aylmerton and Alby, which do not have a letterbox round. We do not know how many readers we have, but what we do know is that most people in Cromer like to read our magazine. We hope that in the coming year we will be able to continue to make our magazines the most read in North Norfolk.

Save a Life for Your New Year’s Resolution

As the festive cheer leaves us and people ponder how to make the New Year better than the last, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is challenging people to spare an hour of their time to donate blood. The New Year’s resolution message comes at a time when there a need to recruit new donors after a dramatic decline in the number of younger donors signing up in 2012. NHSBT aims to recruit 100,000 new donors in 100 days to counteract this drop and protect future blood stocks.

With blood donation sessions available for people to book an appointment throughout 2013, it is important that people from North Walsham help to maintain stocks as hospital demand for blood remains high at the start of the year.

Derek Carr, NHSBT’s lead donor relations manager for the Anglia region said “New Year’s resolutions have become a bit cliché over the past few years as people always set themselves up for big challenges they are unable to complete. Our challenge is a simple one plus we can guarantee donors a warm welcome, a hot cup of tea and a biscuit to help boost their sense of achievement not to mention the satisfaction of knowing that they are helping sick and injured people in local hospitals with each and every donation they make.”

Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years. For more information or to book an appointment, call 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk

Open Evening for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels Owners

Our Veterinary Surgeon, Del Tubby, is particularly interested in Syringomyelia, a brain disorder suffered by this breed. We will have in attendance a guest speaker who suffers from the human form of this condition who will be happy to discuss and answer any questions. We welcome all Cavalier owners and breeders and hope to cover other conditions common to this breed.

Light refreshments will be available. If you would like to attend please phone our Small Animal surgery on 01692 403202 to book your place.

Aldborough Players Celebrate 21 Years

Aldborough Players proudly present their 2013 Pantomime Alice in Wonderland at Aldborough Community Centre at 7.30pm on Wednesday 6th, Thursday 7th, Friday 8th and Saturday 9th February.

This year marks the 21st Year of The Aldborough Players. In celebration of this we will be revisiting the plot of our very first pantomime which although based on Alice in Wonderland was called Sally in Pantoland.

As always there will be twists to the original story line but to keep with tradition there will be Dames, a Mad Hatters tea party, a croquet match with strange pink flamingos, audience participation "Oh no there won't, oh yes there will" and a very angry Queen who wants to lock everyone away for being happy. Several of this year's cast and crew were involved in that very first production back in 1992 but…this year's Alice hadn't even been born.

There are over 65 people involved every year in putting on our pantomimes and it is this team work and pooling of talents both on stage and off stage that has brought the Players success for so many years.

Property at Auction by Stephanie Connor, Solicitor with Hayes + Storr

When buying a property at auction, you will find that it is very different to the normal conveyancing process. If you are the successful bidder then you have effectively exchanged contracts when the hammer falls, and both you and the seller will face financial penalties if either of you fail to complete the transaction on the completion date.

All investigations and surveys on the property must be done before the auction date, as you cannot back out of the purchase if you discover something untoward in your searches or survey after the hammer has fallen. This does mean that you will incur costs before the auction even though you may not be the successful bidder.

The auctioneers will make an auction pack available, which contains legal documentation about the property, and the auctioneer’s terms and conditions. Your solicitor can advise you

on this paperwork before the auction.

If you require a mortgage to buy a property at auction then it is wise to ensure that you have your mortgage offer before the date of the auction. If you do not, and your lender does not issue a mortgage offer or is not ready to release the funds in time to complete your purchase, you could lose the property and your deposit. If you are the successful bidder then you will be required to pay the deposit (usually 10%) immediately. The remainder of the purchase price will be payable on the completion date. The date for the completion of your purchase will be in the paperwork provided by the auctioneer and is usually 28 days after the date of the auction. If you do not proceed with your purchase you are likely to lose your 10% deposit and could also face a claim for additional costs from the seller.

2013 Cromer New Year’s Day Fireworks

I trust everybody had a good new year and enjoyed the fireworks. It was nice to see the Town so busy with people enjoying a day out.

I would like to thank everyone involved in making this year’s display a great success again, and in helping to raise £8,600. This is down slightly on last year (£9,400) and will be split between next year’s display and local charities and good causes. Any group interested in a small grant should contact

Cromer Town Council.

Thanks again to St John’s Ambulance, the Police and Fire Brigade, Cromer Museum and the many collectors. A special thank you to St Peter and St Pauls Church for use of the church, including music recital.

Particular thanks to Premier Fireworks who again put on a very special and impressive display, receiving many favourable comments on the night.

A purchase at auction can sometimes be a bargain, but it is essential that you prepare properly before the date of the auction so that you know exactly what you are buying and you have the necessary funds in place.

North Norfolk Rotary club have pledged this charity as their chosen charity for the second year running, with their ambition being to cover the whole element of costs annually from various fundraising initiatives. They recently also raised close to £1000 from their annual bucket collection at Morrisons in Cromer.

This money was raised at Royal Cromer Golf Club in their summer Charity Golf day organised by Kevin Abbs and the professional staff of Royal Cromer.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

As the branch enters its 13th year we do not know what challenges we face in order to help cats in our area. During 2012 we again re-homed over 200 cats and kittens and believe that before the end of this year we will re-home our 3,000th cat, quite an achievement for a small branch run entirely by volunteers. During last year we also paid for nearly 300 cats to be neutered from branch funds (this figure does not include those helped with our fixed payment vouchers) and we will continue to help people on low incomes and benefits in this way.

Several of the cats and kittens which came into care last year had health problems. Cats like Nemo and Dori, victims of road traffic accidents who required cage rest, or kittens like Dollar and Tuppence who developed polyps which have required extensive surgery because they had cat flu when quite young for which they did not receive treatment before joining us. Also older cats like Simba (diabetes) and Trinny (thyroid) both now on medication for life who have settled in new homes with caring new owners who understand their problems. Veterinary care is expensive but we will always help a cat if we possibly

ROTARY SLEIGH RAISES OVER £1000

The Christmas Sleigh, organised annually by Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club, this year raised £1,069 for charity.

The sleigh, complete with Father Christmas and carols, toured the streets in Cromer on two evenings and then spent two days outside Morrisons. The Saturday day-time collection realised £430.

This year’s collection will go to help polio suffers in the UK. “In the current economic climate our figure of over £1,000 is excellent” commented Rotary President Peter Stibbons.

Happy New Year!

can. Unfortunately, sometimes, we have to make the decision we all hate for the cat’s sake, as in the case of Sheba, the little stray who had a massive tumour in her mouth and could not eat.

At present we still have some of last year’s kittens in care that are now classed as young adults. They have seen their litter mates leave for new homes and for some unknown reason they have not been chosen. All are beautiful and, because they have been with us for longer than usual, are well loved by their carers. Kittens like Tiger Moth, Comet, Piggy Malone Golly, Penny, Bluey, Graham, Patsy,Vulcan and Dakota, who are all micro chipped, vaccinated and neutered, and will make lovely companions giving lots of pleasure to their new families.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.

If, however, you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

CROMER FLOWER CLUB

Our last meeting of 2012 was given by Jenni Baker who demonstrated ‘Scents for Christmas’. Jenni said there were lots of scents that reminded her of Christmas, such as oranges, foliage and candles. Her arrangements were lovely and they set the scene for us to enjoy the festive time. We had 40 decorated chocolate boxes and these were sent to Halsey House, Cromer for residents to enjoy on Christmas Day.

Our next meeting will be our AGM on Monday 21 January at Cromer High School. David Wright will demonstrate in February.

Happy New Year to you all.

At Miramar vets we are looking forward to some exciting changes in 2013. We are sad to be losing Daniel our South African vet, who is moving on to pastures new. We wish him every success in the future with his move and career. We will be welcoming Jennifer to the practice in early January, she will be stepping into Dan’s shoes. Jenni trained at Edinburgh, recently qualifying, and has been working on a research project into new graduate education. We have also launched our new website go to www.miramarvets.co.uk for all the latest news and promotions. Throughout January we have a special promotion on all our ‘lifestage’ foods made by Royal Canin. These foods are aimed at specific breeds, weight ranges and ages, so if you feel your pet has put on a few pounds over Christmas, why not book in to see one of the nurses for a free consultation and assessment? If a diet change is required we can help. Ring 01263 822293 to book an appointment and bring this coupon with you to claim your free pet ‘food cube’ when purchasing from our Royal Canin ‘lifestage’ range. We aim to run a promotion every few months so keep checking The Cromer Times and our website for details - there will be some great freebies up for grabs!

Shoe Box Collection at Cromer Academy

Students at Cromer Academy have once again shown that the spirit of Christmas was still alive, with their annual shoe box collection. Students and their families along with teachers and members of the local community were united in fillinga grand total of 215 shoe boxes full of toys for children in Serbia.

Husky Dogs Attack on Sheringham Beach

Do you know or are you the owners of three Husky dogs, two of which attacked a small Lakeland Terrier on Sheringham Beach on Sunday 30 December between 1pm and 2pm?

The owners of the Huskies did not stop and may not have realised that the Terrier was badly injured and required veterinary treatment for biting wounds. These owners continued walking with their dogs towards West Runton & Cromer.

The Terrier's distinctive collar and identity tags were also lost in the attack.

Please contact Sheringham Safer Neighbourhood Team by phoning Norfolk Constabulary on 101 or emailing snt-sheringham@norfolk.pnn.police.uk

For the last seven years, students at the Academy have sent gifts for under-privileged children between the ages of 2 and 14 to the Serbian city of Novi Sad, twin city of Norwich, through the Samaritan's Purse charity. Once again this year, a group of students from the academy accompanied the boxes to the Samaritan's Purse depot in Norwich, preparing their gifts for the long journey by road across Europe. The students assisted volunteers in checking boxes, and making sure they were safe to travel. The boxes will be arriving in Novi Sad in time for Christmas, ensuring that youngsters in the city will have presents to open, and provide them with some Christmas cheer.

Ellen Hedge –Yr7 Student- “We worked from form time in the morning till after break, packing, checking and wrapping the boxes. When we got to Norwich the 12 of us helped check other shoe boxes, learnt why certain things couldn’t go in the shoeboxes and much more! It was a brilliant day! Well done and thank you to everyone who got involved!”

Cromer Academy

Top Class goes International

The computer based head to head competition organised by UEA as part of the Science Olympiad has gone International and Cromer Academy have been invited to take part.

The Olympiad competition is for Year 9 students but the International one is being played by teams of Year 10 students from Norfolk and Europe.

The competition, played by 10 teams of no more than three students, consists of multi-choice scientific questions played head to head with students at the opposing school - the more you get right in the quickest time the more points you get. The International twist is that half the questions are in a foreign language! As Cromer Academy has been drawn against 2 French schools (plus Hethersett in Norfolk), our year 10 students are answering half their questions in French.

So, how are they doing? I am thrilled to say 10A are doing extremely well. They beat College Jean Monet, St Jorioz and also Hethersett by 9 games to 1 but were narrowly defeated by College Victor Hugo,Gassin by 6 games to 4. Cromer are currently top of their group with 2 matches still to be played. I would like to congratulate them, not only on their success but the keen, enthusiastic and very competitive way they have played. Keep it up all the way to the final – we hope!

Leonardo’s Osso Buco

Osso Buco means ‘slowly braised’ in Italian. This is a family recipe - my great-grandfather, Leonardo Bizzarri, was the former maître d’hôtel at the Savoy in London and studied under the legendary chef Georges August Escoffier. My great-grandfather retired to Overstrand, and in his dotage was a bit of an experimenter in the kitchen. He married the rich flavours of Escoffier’s stock to the succulent Norfolk beef he found here with fantastic results.

The recipe’s been passed on to me and is a great, simple dish that is a bestseller when it’s on the menu at the Grove.

We’ve had a really busy Christmas and New Year, and from January we’re introducing a real lunchtime bargain for all those hardy souls who brave the Norfolk winter. If you’re over fifty you can enjoy two courses for £10 (or £6.95 for one course) plus coffee off the specials boards from Wednesday through to Friday – great local food and a lovely setting to relax in front of the roaring woodburner.

I hope you enjoy Leonardo’s Osso Buco...

Ingredients: ▪ 6 thick slices of Norfolk veal or beef shank ▪ 4 tablespoons of plain flour ▪ 30g of butter ▪ 2 Spanish onions finely diced ▪ 2 large carrots cubed ▪ 2 sticks of celery peeled and chopped ▪ 2 cloves of garlic, finely sliced ▪ 300ml of chicken stock ▪ 1 tin of chopped tomatoes ▪ 2 teaspoon of fresh chopped oregano ▪ 1 bay leaf

Method: ▪ Season the flour and roll the shank meat until fully covered ▪ Melt the butter over a medium heat and seal the meat until browned

The 31 January 1953 is a date that has remained in the memory of many Norfolk people who live on the coast. On that night a combination of a high Spring tide and a severe north westerly gale caused extensive flooding down the east coast of England. Norfolk was badly affected with some 82 people losing their lives as the North Sea crashed through defences demolishing everything in its path.

Winter wonders, the remedy for January blues? January can make even the most energetic of us feel down in the dumps. The merriment of Christmas is now a distant memory, short days, cold often dreary weather and a lack of money - it’s not surprising we’re all in need of some cheering up.

To help you feel better and brighter than ever this January, the National Trust thinks it may have the answer to easing those winter blues – experiencing nature’s winter wonders…

MAGICAL WINTER SKIES

Often remembered for being grey and overcast, we often forget the amazing winter skies full of intense colour, the perfect backdrop to witness huge flocks of birds passing through. From the vast flocks of geese that can be seen in North Norfolk, roosting on the coastal marshes at Blakeney Freshes to the sight and sound of hundreds of widgeon and teal taking to the air at Wicken Fen, this is definitely the time of year to be looking skywards. Don't be in a hurry to rush home either, the amazing winter sunsets are just as breathtaking.

FABULOUS WINTER GARDENS

The bleak midwinter may not be the most obvious time to visit gardens, but this time of year brings its own magic. Trees without their

leaves reveal new views, statues cast long shadows from the low lying sun – our gardens take on an enchanted appearance. The winter garden at Anglesey Abbey in particular, with some 150 species of plants is an oasis of rich winter colours that lift the spirits. It won’t be long before snowdrops start emerging here and at Oxburgh Hall, Peckover House and Sheringham Park, creating stunning displays that transform the woodland floor.

walks to enjoy at Flatford and Dunwich Heath, offering some of the best crystal clear views of the year. Wonderfully varied habitats to explore; savour the views and absorb the history and rich variety of trees, bird and animal life along the way. You can always call in for a warming brew at the end of your stroll.

As the temperature drops, staying inside in the warm may seem like the most sensible option. But waking up after a hoarfrost, our landscapes can become scenes from a winter wonderland. Coated in white, icicles and soft frost crystals transform the countryside.it’s as though everything has been covered by a blanket of snow. Ickworth, Wimpole and Sheringham Park in particular lend themselves to scenes from a Christmas card, the perfect spots to bask in nature's majesty with frost-covered topiary, ice-rimmed lakes and breath-taking vistas.

You’re never too old to have fun in the snow and it’s well worth visiting your local National Trust place when there has been a fresh dump of the white stuff. Hatfield Forest and Blickling Hall not only look beautiful, they’re great spaces for families to build the ultimate snowman, make snow angels and igloos of all shapes and sizes. The slopes at Dunstable Downs lend themselves to sledging too. Of course remember to wrap up warm, take care when having fun in the snow and make plenty of time for hot chocolate breaks.

STUNNING JACK FROST

WONDERFUL WINTER WALKS

Why not wrap up warm and banish those winter blues, on a walk that blows the cobwebs away and sheds the extra pounds you’ve put on over the festive season? When the country is at its most wild and wintry, there are some great

Crab & Lobster Festival hands out grants totaling £7,500 to community groups across Cromer and Sheringham

Last month the Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival proudly handed over grants totalling £7,500 to local charities and organisations from monies raised at this year’s Charity Windbreak Auction.

This year the Fishermen’s Mission was chosen as the Festival’s main charity for the vital support the Mission gives to fishermen and their families. On behalf of the Mission, senior superintendent Tim Jenkins, collected a cheque for £2,500.

The remaining £5,000 was distributed between fourteen local organisations who joined members of the Festival’s committee at a presentation on Sunday 2 December at The Constantia where cheques were presented to local groups who work tirelessly for the benefit of the local community.

Festival Chairman Tony Shipp opened the presentation by thanking all those who had helped make the Festival and auction in 2012 such a success, as well as all those who had worked to construct the Crab Pot Christmas Tree in Cromer. The grants were handed out to representatives from the organisations present by Festival presidents Hilary Thompson and Noel Gant.

The organisations who received grants from the scheme were Open Door Community Arts, Sheringham U18s Football Team, Suffield Park Infant & Nursery School, Cromer Lawn Tennis & Squash Association, The Cromer Bells Project, RNLI Cromer, After Breast Cancer Sheringham, Cromer & North Norfolk Festival of Music, Dance & Speech, Cromer Exhibition Foundation, Cromer Christmas Lights, Sidestrand Hall School, Cromer & District Garden Society and Age UK North Norfolk.

Representatives from Age UK North Norfolk said their grant would go towards their ‘Learning to Live Again’ programme which helps older people access activities throughout North Norfolk.

Festival Chairman Tony Shipp said “this year’s grants help to continue the Festival’s tradition of raising money for local charities through the Annual Charity Auction and we are delighted that so many local community groups will benefit from them”.

On receiving their grant, After Breast Cancer Sheringham said “this grant will enable the group to keep going. We were in a position where we could only survive until Christmas but this grant means we can keep going for another year”.

Over the past three years the Crab & Lobster Festival has donated over £24,000 to local charities. At a time when fundraising is an uphill challenge, voluntary and community groups are more important than ever before and these grants will really help at a grassroots level.

The Festival will be announcing details of their annual art trail for 2013 in January. In 2013 the Festival will run 17-19 May.

Local Charity Needs Donations

Staff at the Sue Ryder charity shop in Cromer on Church Street is urging people to donate their unwanted items to them during the Christmas and New Year holidays. The shop is part of a network of 20 charity shops in Norfolk that help to raise vital funds to support health and social care charity Sue Ryder. All money raised goes directly to pay for incredible care and emotional support for people with life-changing illness.

Jade Pennington at Sue Ryder commented: “We are encouraging people to clear out their wardrobes and cupboards and donate any clothes that no longer fit, books they have already read and bric-abrac they no longer use to our charity shop on 61, Church Street, Cromer, NR27 9HH. Charity shops like the Sue Ryder shop in Cromer benefit the local community as a whole, because they help raise money which goes back into providing end of life and long-term care to local people when they need it most, including care provided at hospices and care centres across the UK”. Sue Ryder’s shops are currently receiving fewer donations that they need to meet an increasing demand for good quality items at affordable prices. In North Norfolk shops are short of the donations they need to keep shelves continually stocked with merchandise.

Jade added: “The next few years will be the most challenging we have ever faced. An ageing, growing population combined with hard-hitting cuts by Government has increased reliance on charities to deliver care services people need. More than ever we vitally need your support.

We are hoping that local groups, businesses, schools and individuals will support our appeal by donating stock to our shops and asking friends, family members and colleagues to do the same. The support of the local community has never been so vital for Sue Ryder than it is now”.

For more information on ways people can support Sue Ryder please call 01263 515879 or visit www.sueryder.org

CROMER IN BLOOM REVIEW OF 2012

Another busy year started warm and dry with the usual Spring tidy up of the areas we look after. Plans were made for some alterations and new planting schemes. However, in May, our Chairman Jim Bond had an accident that shocked and worried us all. He has been, of course, our main concern since then.

We continued with the Summer planting around town at the TIC, island beds, seafront beds (opposite Morrisons garage) and Cabbell Road and also the Parish Hall planters. The barrier baskets at Louden Road were retained although every year thefts of plants from these baskets is very disheartening as these should be for everyone to enjoy, not just one selfish person. The seafront garden at North Lodge is coming on well. One area has been planted in memory of our friend and fellow ‘Bloomer’ Olive Wass. An olive tree was donated and bulbs and shrubs have been planted – Olive’s family have named this ‘Olive’s Grove’.

The annual Cromer in Bloom competition was well supported. Judge Alison Cushing said the standard was high despite the fact that by the time of judging the weather was very wet with little sunshine to bring the gardens on. Presentation evening was held in August in the Walled Garden at Felbrigg Hall – thanks to Ray Sandham, Property Manager, National Trust, for the use of this lovely venue. A raffle raised £100 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

As Autumn approached our minds turned to planting for the Spring whilst still maintaining our beds, which as it was good weather lasted well into October.

At the end of November we took part in the Nativity Festival and also the Christmas Tree Festival where our bucket collection for the Air Ambulance raised £145. Thanks to everyone who contributed.

So now we are at the start of a new season - more plans, of course, to change some of the areas that have become tired looking. Sustainable planting with seasonal bedding is what we are aiming for. If you feel you would like to join us and have a few hours to spare please telephone Monica on 01263 513788 for a chat. New members are always welcome.

I personally would like to thank Jackie Land, Sally and Roger Tipple, Viv Bateman, John Pretty and Stan Foxall for their support this year. I would also like to wish everyone in Cromer a Happy, Healthy and Sunny 2013! Monica Gepp, Vice Chairman, Cromer in Bloom

New statistics confirm ambulance response times are worsening – North Norfolk Labour Party

Less than half of the urgent emergency calls to the ambulance service last year in north Norfolk were answered within a target of eight minutes, and the percentage of ambulance staff reaching patients within nineteen minutes in 2012 dropped from 80.6% to 72.4%. Although the overall targets are set by government for the whole of the region, the data seen by North Norfolk Labour Party confirms in north Norfolk a decline in response times, and supports concerns about reducing the number of double-staffed ambulances in the district.

The data from the ambulance trust shows that although there were fewer life-threatening emergency calls in 2012 (4380 in 2012 compared to 4937 in 2011) the ambulance service has seen more delays in the time it takes for first responders, rapid response vehicles, or ambulances to reach patients based

on those 'A8' and 'A19' targets. The number of serious, but not life-threatening, calls in north Norfolk rose to 10,288 (up from 9862 in 2011). Denise Burke, chair of North Norfolk Labour Party, said “These figures raise further doubts

This year, knowing how difficult local businesses are finding it, Cromer Christmas Lights Committee decided to make a change to the way in which they did their fund raising. Paul Stowe explains “We usually send out a letter asking for donations and suggest a figure of around £30. Instead of money, this year we decided to ask if they would donate prizes for a raffle. The response was brilliant - businesses donated 78 prizes and we were able to sell 800 tickets. First prize was a TV with built in DVD kindly donated by Bennetts. Earlier this month the winner of this great prize went into Bennetts in Cromer to collect his prize. A delighted Mr Tyler said he was really pleased and that he

had never won anything before so to win first prize was fantastic. Without the help of the local businesses with their cash donations and donations for our raffle, and of course all the wonderful people who put money in our buckets, bid on our silent auction, or bought raffle tickets, we would not be able to keep Cromer looking at its best at Christmas. So we would like to say a really big thank you to everybody who has supported us this year - it is nice to know that even in these very difficult times people are willing to help. Next year we are hoping to organise more events to make the switch on a real family day out and in order to do that, we need more volunteers to help with fund rais-

500 ambulance hours lost at the Norfolk & Norwich

Ambulances wasted more than 500 hours in October last year waiting to hand over patients at the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital. The total is nearly three times as high as the second worst hospital, Addenbrookes in Cambridge, which lost 185 hours.

The October figure of 537 hours is a 57% increase since July. The figures were obtained by North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb. Mr Lamb has persistently highlighted the problem of ambulances ‘stacking’ at A&E, exacerbating the problem of slow response times in the county. Commenting, Mr Lamb said “These figures show the impact delays handing patients over are having on our ambulance service. It is the equivalent to having an ambulance out of action for 22 whole days in a single month. The consequences of that are obvious. Part of the problem is that the hospital is constantly under pressure. The hospital was built using the widely discredited Private Finance Initiative and with limited bed numbers. This means its always virtually full which makes it difficult to move patients into the main hospital from A and E. I have been saying for some time now that a key factor in poor response times in North Norfolk is handover delays at the Norfolk and Norwich. These figures absolutely support that. I am pleased that at the meeting I had last week with key people in the NHS in Norfolk, there was a clear recognition that the problem must be resolved. Cracking this issue is absolutely critical to improving the service here in Norfolk.” Cromer Times #413 January 19th 2013 22

about the government’s programme of savings which is taking £50m from the ambulance service over the next five years and has seen the number of double-staffed ambulances in the county reduced. With fewer emergency ‘red’ calls being met within the eight minute and 19 minute targets, and an increase in the number of green calls in north Norfolk, there is a clear need for more ambulances – not less – in our district.

In 2013 we will continue to press local MPs who support cuts in the ambulance service to rethink their stance, and we want to see less talk and more action at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital where there needs to be vast improvements in ambulance turnaround times.”

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club

There was a good turnout for our Christmas lunch on 4 December which was enjoyed by members, guests, visitors and some widows of former members. The Chairman, Ken Macnish, was pleased and grateful to announce that our two vacant committee posts are to be filled by volunteers - Gordon Hatchett will be Secretary and David Brown will be Programme Secretary. As we meet on the first Tuesday of the month, we have taken a break in January and will be back to our usual routine on 5 February when Nick Walmsley will give a talk entitled “R101 and the Norfolk connection” after lunch at the Links Hotel, West Runton. If you are a retired, or nearly retired, gentleman and you like the sound of a monthly lunch followed by a speaker, you are very welcome to come along as a visitor and try us out.

If you are interested, please contact Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or e-mail candsprobus@hotmail.co.uk for more information. There is no requirement to live in either Cromer or Sheringham and whether you are an established resident or a newcomer to the area, you will get a warm welcome.

There was a choice of their homemade very warming casseroles and jacket potatoes. This was followed by desserts made by other members. Father Christmas also paid a visit and distributed gifts to everyone. We were then treated to in-house entertainment from the Cromer WI Crew and their Shoe String Pantomime. There were lots of hisses and boos but it all turned out right in the end and everyone joined in with the chorus played on the piano by our President Miriam Ireland. Trish Loth and Cheryl Tait arranged the production with help from six other members of the group’s Drama Club. This was followed by tea and mince pies.

So you want to be a rock star?

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has announced that it is to work in partnership with three Norfolk arts organisations to provide a diverse and exciting programme of music activities for young people in north Norfolk over the next two years.

The Garage, Community Music East and Creative Arts East have each received funding from national charity Youth Music to help raise the creative aspirations of young people across the district by offering broad opportunities ranging from learning how to create different styles of music to managing and promoting a music event.

Community Music East, with funding from NNDC, is running a series of ‘rock school’ workshops across north Norfolk in 2013. Aimed at 14 – 18 year olds, the workshops have been designed to help young people develop their ‘band’ and performance skills. Activities will include song writing, instrument tuition, stage craft, recording and video making.

The programme will begin in January 2013 and will run until October 2013. Those taking part will be offered the chance to perform at the Young People’s Venue as part of Norwich Sound and Vision’s annual festival which will run in October 2013.

John Lee, North Norfolk District Council Cabinet member for Tourism, Leisure and Cultural Services said, “These projects bring tremendous opportunities to the young people of north Norfolk to engage in music making and to learn new skills.

“The projects will also give young people the chance to consider the creative industry as a career option with activities designed to make the most of their talent, ranging from events management to working as part of a creative team”

If you are interested, have enthusiasm, commitment and enjoy working as part of a team, please contact NNDC’s Arts Officer Brenda Seymour on 01263 516053 for more information.

Norman Lamb announces £40 million to help support people in their own homes

Care Minister and North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb last month announced an extra £40 million to help people remain independent in their own homes for longer.

The Liberal Democrat MP announced the further investment in the Disabled Facilities Grant at the Housing Learning and Improvement Network Conference. Speaking at the conference, he said “For people with disabilities and older people, even the simplest things such as walking, getting up the stairs and climbing in and out of the bathtub can become difficult. We know that most people want to remain independent and be supported in their own home as far as possible. This funding will help people make the necessary practical changes to help them remain in their own home and postpone or even prevent the development of serious health and care needs. An adaptation can make a huge difference to the life of an older person by helping them access all facilities and all parts of their home safely and independently.”

The extra money brings the total spend on Disabled Facilities Grant to £785m from 2010/11 to 2014/15. The Coalition Government recognises the important role that housing plays in helping people to remain independent. The announcement followed the October launch of the Care and Support Housing Fund, a £300m fund to stimulate the market for specialised housing, to help older and disabled adults continue to live independently at home.

New blow for north Norfolk families will hit same day as tax cuts for millionaires

North Norfolk Labour Party have slammed the government for implementing cuts to council tax benefit for families in the district on the same day there will be a tax cut for 8,000 millionaires.

The local Labour Party is concerned about the impact of cutting council tax benefit by 8.5pc in April which will they believe will punish those low earners in work in the district. A family of four with a weekly income of just £300 will now be expected to pay £100 in council tax as a result of the cuts, despite a commitment by the government to freeze council tax for all.

Denise Burke said: "Many of the families affected by these cuts will not be out of work as the government claims, but in work and struggling to make ends meet as the cost of living rises.

By our council's own estimation the amount it will cost to retrieve funding from families who can't or won't pay may be greater than the actual amount they collect at the end of it.

We think it is unfair and the wrong priority to make those who can't pay bear the brunt of austerity while our local MPs support giving 8,000 millionaires an average tax cut of £107,500 at the same time."

Local councils this year will receive a transitional grant to soften the blow of the cuts, but it is feared the loss of this one-off payment in 2014 will have an even greater effect on families the following year.

Medals for veterans of the Arctic Convoy It was announced by the Prime Minister at the end of last year that veterans of two Second World War campaigns will receive new medals, following a campaign by veterans’ groups.

Reflexology

Veterans of the Arctic Convoy will be recognised with an Arctic Convoy Star medal, while the aircrew of Bomber Command will be awarded a Bomber Command clasp. The news follows a review by Sir John Holmes into the rules and principles governing the award of military campaign medals. The Coalition Agreement included a commitment to review the rules surrounding the award of military campaign medals, as part of work to strengthen the military covenant. Liberal Democrat support for the National Defence Medal campaign led to the scope of the review being widened and Sir John Holmes, a former UK ambassador, being appointed to lead it. A previous review conducted under the last Government was widely criticised for not consulting with outside groups. Commenting, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “I raised this with the minister on behalf of the many constituents who contacted me to voice their support for recognition for the veterans of the Arctic Convoy. I am thrilled that the Prime Minister has seen the importance of this issue and particularly of resolving it swiftly. The Liberal Democrats in Government have been working on the medal review for over a year now to get it as robust, as fair and as transparent as possible so that the extraordinary service of our veterans is recognised, no matter how long ago their bravery was displayed. In their thirteen years of government, Labour refused to look at White 1996 N Reg specific medal cam126,000 miles Good Runner paigns. Grumpy Old Man - A Word in your Face

I have noticed with increasing irritation how usage of the English language is becoming sloppier and unthinkingly formulaic, with broadcasters, news publishers and even the Prime Minister getting into the habit of saying the same thing twice - for example 7 p.m. this evening or 10 a.m. this morning, as if catering for people who have no idea what a.m. and p.m. mean. Even worse is 17.30 p.m. this afternoon! The time honoured (no pun intended) word ‘o’clock’ has fallen out of favour – too old fashioned I suppose, but Bill Hailey singing ‘One, two three p.m., four p.m. rock’ rather lacks the same impact.

and accountants love. David Cameron has recently stated that a simple in or out referendum on membership of the EU gives the voters only two choices. No, it’s only one choice. Help us all!

The latest example which had me reaching for my pen as I perused my newspaper is – electronic e-mail! I suppose it will not be long before somebody states they have received an electronic e-mail on their computer, just to make sure we are aware it didn’t drop through their letterbox in a stamped envelope.

One of my schoolmasters, at the beginning of each term, would write in the top left hand corner of his very large blackboard, in neat capitals, two simple commands: ‘Accuracy! Listen to instructions’.

Nick Robinson, reporting on BBC News, has just referred to prisoners on early release re-offending again. Re-offending is all that is needed, unless they are repeatedly re-offending, in which case say so.

We used to regard this as his little idiosyncrasy, but I have come to realise that the wisdom of this statement, which was never rubbed out, if followed, will save you a mighty lot of trouble throughout life. Lack of accuracy and failure to listen properly will constantly drop you in the soft and smelly.

My point is that these careless little slips in the correct use of grammar, of which there is an increasing number, mean misunderstandings and misinterpretations can easily arise, causing errors in judgement and leaving the sort of loophole that lawyers

I received a draft of a legal document a few years back and was mystified by the wording in several places which could be interpreted in different ways. ‘Oh,’ said the solicitor airily, ‘if a problem arises any law office will be able to explain it!’ How appalling. How inaccurate! How condescending. The solicitor will charge for their explanation ...
