These people are convincing and very persistent. As many people, especially of an older age group, are not always confident with new technology this request can seem compelling; especially when they are in their own home and feeling safe and off guard.

It is extremely unlikely that any reputable email/ internet service provider would ever cold call a customer in this way and clearly if you had a problem with your email or internet service it would be more likely that you would bring it to your service provider's attention than the other way around.

If this happens we would strongly suggest that you put the phone down, without giving any details then refer the matter to Norfolk Police. If you have given details and have been targeted in this way then I would suggest that you contact Norfolk Police for advice as to what to do next. J Glen

We have knowledge of two incidents where elderly individuals have been targeted by phone, by a call centre in which the caller states that they have reason to believe that there is a problem with their internet or email service. The caller then states that their "firm" can fix the problem on their computer for a fee and asks for bank details and their internet access codes.

Thai King Prawn Green Curry with Sticky Jasmine Rice and Asian Style Vegetables This is a fantastic Thai curry passed down to me from a previous head chef who had lots of experience with Asian foods, and it’s stayed with me ever since. It’s the perfect time of year for curries generally, and this one is a real winter warmer – in fact one of the owners here calls it ‘The Suffolk’ because it’s slightly thicker than normal… (!)

As we keep one eye on a couple of big occasions coming up here at the Grove – Mother’s Day and Easter – we’re continuing to run our over 50s lunchtime special – two courses plus coffee off the specials board for just £10 – so do pop in and see us Wednesday through to Saturday. And don’t forget our amazing Sunday lunch too!

The delicate blend of flavours give my Thai King Prawn Green Curry a starring role on our upcoming Valentines menu – details at eatatthegrovecromer.co.uk.

Ingredients: 50g Thai green curry paste or more for extra heat* 4 tins of full fat coconut milk 15g lemon grass 15g finely sliced fresh ginger 1 lemon (zest and juice) 2 limes (zest and juice)

from Head Chef at The Grove, Gary Parrett 50g fresh coriander 3 pulped cloves of garlic 100g of peeled raw tiger prawns (half and remove the tube through the body) 50g sliced Chinese cabbage, either from the supermarket, or ask Andrew or Lisa at the Cromer Farm and Health Shop ½ finely sliced red onion 2 peeled and finely sliced carrots 1 finely sliced courgette halved Jasmine rice as you require

*Thai green curry paste - try to use mae ploy, but if that’s not available Blue Dragon is also ok – just double the weight as it’s not as strong. Alternatively there’s a good recipe online that I’ve used before: www.kitchenbutterfly.com/ how-to/make-thai-green-curry-paste/ - all the ingredients can be found at the Cromer Farm and Health shop on Tucker Street.

Method: 1. Empty the contents of the coconut milk into a saucepan and gently simmer. 2. Into this add your sliced ginger, chopped lemongrass, citrus zest and juice, garlic and your curry paste. Reduce the mixture until it has thickened slightly, remove from the

heat and strain back into the saucepan. 3. In a separate pan boil the rice until the water has disappeared, then drain - the texture should be fluffy and sticky. 4. Place the curry sauce on a medium to low heat and add your vegetables; these need to be crunchy in texture so only a few minutes cooking in the sauce is needed. 5. Once your vegetables are done add your halved peeled prawns and chopped coriander. The prawns will only need a about a minute as they will be delicate after halving.

That’s it, serve how you wish – though it’s always nice with some wedges of lime and chopped corriander.

Alongside this will be a performance of Five Mystical Songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams written some 100 years earlier. Ralph Vaughan Williams is arguably the greatest composer Britain has seen since the days of Henry Purcell. He composed music notable for its power, nobility and expressiveness representing, perhaps, the essence of ‘Englishness’. Five Mystical Songs is a setting of four poems by George Herbert, from his 1633 collection The Temple: Sacred Poems. The baritone soloist will be Jamie Wright, a choral scholar at York Minster. The concert will also include a short organ recital by Lawrence Tao, organist at Gresham’s School. He will play Bach’s Trio, Prelude and Fugue in C Major BWV 545.

Tickets £10 (£12 on the door) from Sheringham Little Theatre Box Office (01263 822347) and K Hardware, Cromer. Under 18s go free.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

With the daylight hours increasing and hopefully the weather getting warmer, Spring is once again in the air for the un-neutered members of the cat population. Although most people are aware that it is important to get their female cats neutered to prevent unwanted pregnancies, there are those that believe it is not so important to neuter their tom cats. Unfortunately this can lead to heartbreak when the cat goes missing in search of a member of the opposite sex. In the past week Stephanie has had phone calls from two people whose cat (both under a year old) had gone missing. Although both these cats had operations booked, their hormones kicked in before the appointed day. A male cat will travel a long distance to find a receptive female and there are no guarantees he will be able to find his way home afterwards. These cats very often end up coming into our care several months later with no indication as to where they came from and sadly the worse for wear. There are also the added dangers of crossing busy roads where they could be hit by a car and injured, or worse. Un-neutered tom cats are also more likely to contact FIV or FELV should they get into a fight with another tom that has been infected with either of these nasty conditions.

Having your cat neutered is important and we will always offer vouchers to people on low incomes or benefits to help with the cost. Please pick up the phone and ring our neutering line if you think you are eligible as it could save a call to Stephanie to report your cat is missing.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.

If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

A"Tail" of Wonder

I wonder why I am sitting here! I wonder why people look at me and walk by! I wonder why I have been here so long! I wonder if I have done anything wrong!

All these thoughts and more must be going through the head of a lovely little greyhound called Dana. She has just had her 5th birthday and is a really sweet and loving girl. She has been really well behaved when promoting Homefinders at shows and on walks. Her black coat with little white flecks all over it stands out and she will make a lovely, lovely pet for someone.

So why I wonder has she been sitting in a kennel for four months watching others around her go to new homes. Dana will make a loving, loyal companion as she adores being fussed and cuddled.

If you think you could give Dana a loving home and would like to meet her, get more information or arrange a home check, contact Homefinding Co-ordinator David Jones (Beeston Regis) through the Homefinders local rate call number 0845 458 3797 or drop in at our kennels at 51 Cromer Road (A140), Hainford (between Aylsham and Norwich). We are now open every day from 10am to 2pm.

Norman Lamb MP supports Post Office DVLA win

The Post Office will continue to offer accessible driving licence and tax services to millions of customers in the UK, including in North Norfolk. Local MP Norman Lamb attended an event in Parliament last month to show his support for the win by signing a dedicated congratulations board.

Commenting, Norman Lamb, former Postal Services Minister, said “The Post Office is a vital part of communities in North Norfolk and has long provided a platform for essential and every day government services. I was thrilled when it was announced that the Post Office bid has been successful. I am dedicated to ensuing local residents can easily access services they need and think this is another step in reaching that goal. When I was Postal Services Minister I kept a close eye on the Post Office’s work on winning the contract. This is the tenth success in a row for Post Office Limited. It is also great news that we have the lowest member of Post Office closures for 25 years.”

DVLA services from spring 2013, including:

Norman Lamb signing the board

Martin Moran, Commercial Director at the Post Office said “We are delighted to have the support of Norman Lamb MP. The Post Office has a strong track record in successfully delivering essential government services. Winning the DVLA contract again is testimony to the quality of our staff and subpostmasters, whose longstanding commitment to serving local communities contributed greatly to this success.”

£600,000 to help pupils in Norfolk catch up

£600,000 will help Year 7 pupils who didn’t reach the expected level in literacy and maths when they finished primary school in Norfolk catch up with their classmates who did.

Schools will receive £500 per pupil who didn’t reach the expected level to help them through catch-up classes and individual tuition.

Evidence shows only five per cent of pupils who don’t achieve Level 4 in both English and maths at Key Stage 2 go on to achieve five GCSEs at A* to C, including English and Maths.

This extra money, announced by Liberal Democrat Leader and Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg in September at Liberal Democrat Autumn Conference, is to help these children catch up with their classmates. Schools will have freedom to decide how best to use the catch-up premium, but examples could include: • Small-group tuition supported by new classroom materials and resources, which could take place at lunchtimes or after school; • Holiday support to deliver intensive catch-up over a short period. • Additional services and materials to add to those provided by the school, such as tutor services or proven computer-based learning or online support.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said “No pupil should be left behind in our schools, to ensure that everyone has a fair chance to get on in life. To achieve this it is hugely important that every child has a strong grasp of maths and a good reading ability when they start at secondary school. The evidence shows that pupils who are behind when they start secondary school struggle to catch up by the time they take GCSEs. Catch-up classes and personal tuition are targeted at those who need a helping hand, so their chances of success are increased rather than letting them fall further behind. This could also allow whole classes to move forward faster together, by boosting pupils’ motivation and thereby reducing disruptive behaviour in class.

Commenting further, Nick Clegg said “Liberal Democrats are building a stronger economy in a fairer society, enabling everyone to get on in life. Education is critical to that. The consequences of a pupil being left behind in the basics when they start secondary school can last for the rest of their education. The catch-up premium money being handed out to schools today will help pupils catch up with their peers as quickly as possible. Every child should have the chance to succeed and get off on the right foot when they start their new school.” 14

• Driving Licence photocard renewal • Motor Vehicle Licence Issue • Statutory off road notices (SORN) • Duplicate Vehicle Licence. Many other driver transactions and motor vehicles services will also be offered through Post Office branches as a result of the agreement, meaning customers will be able to access a wide range of DVLA services under one roof.

The Post Office secured the seven year Framework Agreement with Department of Transport in November 2012. It confirms that the Post Office will continue to deliver

The Post Office, now independent of Royal Mail, has an unrivalled national network of over 11,500 branches across the UK, more than all the high street banks combined, and sits at the heart of many communities across the country. The Post Office has made a commitment to no more branch closure programmes. It provides around 170 different services and products spanning financial services including savings, insurance, loans, mortgages and credit cards. Post Office also offers Government services; telephony; foreign currency; travel insurance and mail services.

It serves around 20 million customers a week and half of all small businesses. More than 99 % of people live within three miles of a Post Office branch. For many rural communities the Post Office is the only retail outlet. Post Offices remain highly valued and trusted and are the focal point for many communities. British railways’ biggest engines come together at Poppy Line Steam Gala

After the second World War the newly-nationalised British Railways was faced with the need to replace hundreds of worn-out steam engines. Chief engineer Robin Riddles designed a range of different standard types, from giant express engines to more humble freight movers. And the Poppy Line is celebrating the finest of these in a special Steam Gala which runs Friday 8th – Sunday 10th March, and Saturday/Sunday 16th and 17th March.

Interest will be focused on two crack engines, “Britannia” and “Oliver Cromwell”.

Both played a big role in restoring the UK’s express routes, and “Oliver Cromwell” hauled the fast trains from Norwich to London. The Poppy Line Gala will be the first time these two iconic engines have been seen together in preservation. Contrasting with them will be the giant freight counterpart, the 140-ton “Black Prince”, which Riddles built to handle heavy iron ore trains from the ports to the steelworks. Three other engines from the fertile drawing board of Robin Riddles will also be running, including one – no. 76084 – which has just been restored, and which will become a regular on the Poppy Line. The British Railways Standards Gala is a first for the heritage railway movement. General Manager Trevor Eady says: “It’s taken a couple of years to organise this event, and it should get our 2013 season off to a rousing start!” Because of the cost of bringing in these giant engines, the railway has had to increase prices for the event – but there’s a 15% discount on all tickets booked in advance before March 1st (call 01263 820 800 or go to www.nnrailway.co.uk). Rover tickets (which are valid all day on all trains) are £21 adult, £20 senior citizen and £13 child 5 – 15. Under 5s are free, and a family Rover (2 adults + 2 children or 3 adults + 1 child) is £54. 2- and 3-day Rover tickets are also available at discounted prices. There will be intensive steam services every day of the Gala.

Healthy 2012 Visitor Numbers For The Poppy Line

Despite one of the wettest summers ever recorded in Britain, despite the rival attractions of the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympics, and despite the difficult economic situation, over 148,000 passengers travelled on the Poppy Line in 2012. That’s just 1.5% down on the record number of the previous year.

Key to this sparkling performance were the railway’s special events. The programme included the tribute to the Ealing comedy “Titfield Thunderbolt Live!” in June, the Beer Festival in July, the Grand Steam Gala at the end of August and the re-enactment ’40s Weekend in September (which itself drew record crowds). “Titfield Thunderbolt Live!”

helped to increase June visitors by 2,500 (17%) over the previous June. General Manager Trevor Eady commented “We certainly noticed a drop in passengers over the Olympics – probably a combination of the Games and the dreadful weather – but the full-year performance reflects great credit on our volunteers and staff.” 16

Art Exhibition at Cromer Academy

Cromer Academy students showcased for the first time since becoming an Academy, a selection of art work from the Autumn Term and from a workshop with local artist, Samuel Thomas.

Students worked for a five hour session with the artist in response to images of their local area. Samuel Thomas works in a contemporary style with undertones of Pop art resonating in his work; a modern twist to engage our Gifted and Talented students. As a former student of Maciej Grabowski Yr 8 from Cromer High School, we feel Samuel was a positive influence over how Art can transform the way we look at community but also how it can be further applied in life after school.

In addition, students from year 7- 11 have been striving for artistic excellence within their class projects to develop work they feel proud to exhibit to their community.

We were proud to present and looked forward

to welcoming the community to view the work as well as Parents, Governors and special friends of the Academy too.

Cromer Academy catering students also showcased their delicious talent with a special menu for the private view.

The event was a huge success demonstrating the high standard of work attained by pupils in both the Art and Catering subjects at Cromer Academy. The students at the private view were a credit to the school and behaved maturely whilst either discussing their artwork or waiting on the guests with the hot food and drinks that were available.

Much of the artwork was available for sale and a number of pieces were sold; the students first taste of life as artists.

“I think the whole exhibition Jess Foster - Yr 11 was a great idea, we’ve never done anything like it before and I don’t know any other school that does it.

Women’s World Day of Prayer – I was a stranger and you welcomed me

Megan Osborne - yr 11

Someone also bought my painting which was nice to know.” – Megan Boreham (14)

“The drinks were absolutely fantastic and the artwork was inspirational.” – Hollie Barron (12) and Leigh Paxton (12).

“It was fantastic to see representatives from the local community turn up to the exhibition and support our students’ efforts. It is important to us that students take pride in their work and consider how that can enhance the community” – Mr Nutt Head of Art, Design Technology at Cromer Academy

WHITE HORSE Overstrand

Women’s World Day of Prayer is a unique organisation - truly interdenominational and truly international, it speaks with the voices of women from all corners of the globe. Involvement in WWDP creates a network of Christian women on a worldwide scale which also reaches into our local communities. Preparations go on for months in advance.

Finally, at a church near you on Friday 1 March, women and men will be gathering to celebrate using a programme of worship prepared this year by women in France.

When the women of the French Committee met to work on the material for 2013, the theme chosen for them became close to their hearts – ‘I was a stranger and you welcomed me’. The service they have written for us has a strongly French feel and flavour.

France, like other European countries, receives many asylum requests. In 2011, 51,900 people applied for asylum in France. The presence of these people in the country both enriches the culture and can cause social difficulties. Behind each request, each statistic, is the story of a life. Some of those stories will be shared in the service.

We envisage a great annual wave of prayer, rising with the sun over the island of Samoa and then sweeping across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas, until it comes to rest in American Samoa some 36 hours later. By then services will have taken place in over 170 countries.

Your local service will be held at Cromer Methodist Church at 2pm and the speaker will be Rev. Sharon Williott. All are welcome to attend, men and women and people of all ages. Cromer Times 415 February 16th 2013

If you or someone you know has to go into care, what will happen to your home? by Christina Attridge, Hayes + Storr Solicitors

Of course, the answer to this question depends upon the circumstances eg. ownership and occupation etc.

Here I deal only with the rules relating to what is known as the ‘disregard’.

The value of a resident’s former home will be disregarded in the following circumstances:-

i) Where the same is occupied by a partner, husband, wife, civil partner or unmarried partner except where the resident is estranged or divorced from them.

ii) Where the same is occupied by a relative who is aged 60 or over or a younger relative who is ‘incapacitated’. ‘Relatives’ include parents, parents-in-law, son, son-in-law, daughter, daughter-in-law, step-parent, step-son, step-daughter, brother, sister, grandparent, grandchild, uncle, aunt, nephew, niece, spouse or unmarried partner of the foregoing and also including adoptive parents and adoptive children. ‘Incapacitated’ refers to a person in receipt of Attendance Allowance, Disability Living Allowance, Severe Disablement Allowance, Incapacity Benefit or anyone not in receipt of the above but whose incapacity is equivalent to that required for one of the above.

iii)Where the same is a former partner who is either divorced or estranged from the resident but who is a lone parent.

iv) Where the same is occupied by a child under 16 whom the resident is liable to maintain ie. is a dependant.

The value of the home must also be disregarded if the stay in residential care is temporary and the resident intends to return home or the resident is taking steps to sell it to find something more appropriate to return to.

The Local Authority also has a ‘discretionary’ power to disregard the value of the property where it is the home of someone else not included on the above list and may be exercised where:• The home is the sole residence of someone who has given up their own home to care for the resident, or

• Where someone is an elderly companion of the resident, particularly if they have given up their own home.

The Local Authority will also disregard the value of a resident’s former home for the first 12 weeks from the date of the resident’s admission into permanent care.

February Offer Safe ‘chips’ for Dogs

If that resident has entered the care home on a temporary basis and then decides to stay permanently the 12 week disregard runs from the date when the stay becomes permanent.

The ‘Control of Dogs Act 1992’ states that: every dog shall wear a collar with the name and address of the owner attached to it; this means it is a legal requirement for your pet to be identified when out in public places. Unfortunately collars often come off or can be removed; the only permanent form of identification for your pet is by placing an ID chip into the skin of the ‘scruff’ between the shoulder blades. This simple procedure can be carried out by our vets without the need for anaesthetic or sedation. Puppies are normally ‘chipped’ at second vaccination at 10 weeks old. We are offering these id chips at the special price of £15.00 (usually £25.00) for February only. To book an appointment please call 01263 822293. Please bring this coupon with you to claim your discount.

Henry Blogg Museum calls for straw donkey The RNLI Henry Blogg Museum in Cromer is searching for a straw donkey, and other special souvenirs, to feature in an exciting new exhibition.

On Saturday 23 February members of the public are invited to visit the museum bringing with them a souvenir that holds a memory.

Chosen souvenirs will then have the chance to be displayed in a forthcoming exhibition. Keepsakes, Key Rings and Kiss Me Quick!: A History of Souvenirs will run from the 29 March to the 14 April 2013 at the museum. Looking at the history of souvenirs, including items salvaged from shipwrecks and RNLI memorabilia, the exhibition will explore what makes objects special to us. People have always collected keepsakes as reminders of special events, holidays, moments in history, places or people and this will be reflected upon within the display.

The exhibition will feature items from the museum's own collection including an emotive tile salvaged from the Sepoy. This memento commemorates Henry Blogg's rescue of

the two crew members from the barge in December 1933. Hand painted to depict the scene the tile shows a desire to remember and commemorate the event.

from Mexican sombreros to RNLI memorabilia and, of course, the elusive straw donkey. Whatever the souvenir this is a fantastic opportunity for the public to see their own objects on display and tell their stories.

Also on display will be a photograph of three elegant Edwardian women riding donkeys at Lowestoft. This souvenir shows a more light-hearted recording of events. Taken exactly 100 years ago, the image was preserved in a photograph album belonging to Joyce Taylor, which was later donated to the Henry Blogg Museum by her son and also includes images of Cromer lifeboats.

Jacqui Palmer, Museum Manager said: ‘I hope that many interesting souvenirs are shown on the day, especially ones related to the RNLI, and I look forward to seeing some become part of our exciting Easter exhibition.’

Exhibitions Assistant Rebecca Fletcher said: ‘I am eager to see the mix of items that the public will bring to the museum and am particularly interested to hear the fascinating and varied stories behind them. We obviously want to find that straw donkey!’

The museum is hoping that visitors will bring a range of souvenirs on the 23 February ranging

Labour select Cromer publisher Jen Emery as by-election candidate North Norfolk Labour Party has selected Cromer publisher and business woman Jen Emery as their candidate for the district council by-election taking place in the town on 21 February. Mrs Emery runs the independent publisher Salt Publishing in the town, alongside her husband Chris, and the company narrowly missed out on winning the prestigious Man Booker Prize for literature in 2012.

She is no stranger to local politics having campaigned to save the jobs at the iconic Cromer Crab Factory, and fought against the district council’s decision to increase parking fees in the tourist town. More recently she has passionately petitioned against the decision to cuts the town’s ambulance fleet through Labour’s Act on Ambulances campaign. This led to a partial u-turn from the East of England Ambulance Service Trust, but concerns about cuts and response times still remain an important issue in the town.

Jen lives in Cromer with her three children attending local schools. Before creating the publishing firm she spent twenty years working in the NHS and working to help some of society’s most vulnerable people.

I live and work in the town and can think of no better place to be with my family.

As a business owner I understand the pressures faced by small businesses in the town, and the difficulties hard-working families face due to cuts and the rising cost of living.

I have had many years of experience working in the NHS which is one of the reasons I threw myself into the Act on Ambulances campaign when it was announced our fleet was to be reduced while response times are poor.”

Keeping the vulnerable warm and well

Following the announcement that Norfolk has again successfully bid for extra funding from central Government to help the vulnerable this winter, North Norfolk District Council has begun distributing 300 Winter Warmth packs to residents across the District.

Deaths due to cold weather increase by almost 20% during the winter months. Many of these deaths can be prevented if those at risk are able to keep themselves warm by heating their homes, wearing warm clothing and staying active. NNDC is working with a number of health and voluntary sector organisations to ensure those residents more likely to be affected by the cold weather receive a Winter Warmth pack. The packs include a range of products and information to help keep people warm and well in cold weather.

Those who will benefit from the packs are vulnerable people whose health and well-being is more likely to be at risk from living in a cold home. Priority will be given to people who are vulnerable due to age, disability, a pre-existing

health condition, a low income or who live in a poorly heated or insulated home.

The Winter Warmth pack contains a range of products including gloves, a hat, socks, a hot water bottle, insulated mug and a room thermometer. The room thermometer has been provided to help recipients check that their homes are at the recommended temperature of between 18 - 21°C (64 – 70 °F).

NNDC Cabinet Member for Health and Well-Being, Angie Fitch-Tillett, said, “The recent cold snap has brought in to focus just how important it is to ensure we consider the health and well-being of the most vulnerable among our communities. Remaining warm and well is often difficult for those on a low

income, older people and those with long-term health conditions. The range of products offered within the Warmth Pack will help make a real difference to those people. Distribution of the packs is already underway and I am pleased that we are working closely with many local voluntary organisations to provide help and practical advice to those in need.”

For further information and advice concerning energy efficiency in the home, please contact NNDC Housing Services on 01263 516315.

Additional services to support vulnerable residents are available all year round from statutory agencies in Norfolk. See www.norfolk.gov.uk for details.

Dear Grumpy Old Man

As a self confessed inveterate pedant when it comes to abuse/misuse of our English language, I wholeheartedly share your irritation.

‘Reverse backwards’, ‘serious crisis’,’ restarted again’, ‘future ahead’ – for me this is akin to the scratching of fingernails down a blackboard – sorry, chalkboard.

Then there’s what I call lazy English. The snooker commentator who says ‘he’s hit it perfect’ and ‘he did that previous’ - is it really too much to put ‘–ly’ on the end in each case?

Equally irritating are the ‘in’ words and expressions – ‘basically’ and ‘at the end of the day’ are now well-established. More recently we don’t seem to have problems any more but we have issues instead (a problem is not an issue and an issue is not a problem!) ‘How do you solve an issue like Maria?’ No, I don’t think so! ‘To be frank’, ‘to be truthful’ and ‘to be honest’ have all been replaced with ‘to be fair’ even when it is inappropriate. When asking how someone is, the response is now usually ‘I’m good’ – no, I am asking about your health and well being not your behaviour or morals!

Everyone Welcome

Then there’s MP speak – their ‘in’ word seems to be ‘clear’ for example ‘I want to make it absolutely clear’ or ‘I couldn’t be more clear’.

Come and try the game Coaching for beginners

UPVC, Aluminium & Timber

Returning to sports commentary, it seems that some commentators are incapable of communicating to their listeners anything of any substance or meaning. For example, during the recent world bowls tournament one player/commentator said ‘The fewer bad bowls that you play means that you have a greater chance of winning’ and one football manager commented ‘If we had scored, it would have been a different result’. If you have nothing to say then for pity’s sake say nothing.

Call Chris: 01263 550013 01692 620014 or 07900 265995

So basically, at the end of the day and to be fair, I want like to make it absolutely clear that this is the end of my rant as my wife, who is slightly pregnant and is expecting a pair of twins, needs me to help innit as she has an issue with the washing machine, know what I mean?

Grumpy Old Man - Retail Therapy A couple of shopping issues this month, the first up being of particular interest to men.

Men shop differently to women. If we need to purchase specific items we seek out sources and buy with the least possible fuss. Women enjoy shopping, apart from the weekly grind around the supermarket shelves, they love to browse and nowhere more than in fashion stores. If their husbands or partners accompany them, which when retired is pretty frequent, the men are in for a tough time.

From long experience I know that if I exhibit the slightest sign of disinterest or restlessness, a palpable tension manifests itself between us. Hanging around aimlessly soon makes my legs ache. Acres of space crammed with clothes and displays to hold female interest, but nowhere to sit down. In winter, wrapped in cumbersome outdoor clothing in a very warm store, adds to my discomfort. Preoccupied with my petty miseries it is disconcerting when my nearest and dearest suddenly confronts me with the question ‘What do you think of this?’

Caught unaware I have no idea whether I am expected to approve or disapprove, and domestic harmony for the remainder of the day hangs in the balance …

When will the retail trade wake up and realise that if shops provide sufficient handy seating for men in their fashion departments, preferably with a few newspapers to peruse, everyone will be happier. Women will be able to relax and take their time knowing that the old man is comfortable instead of irritable and that he will be more likely to contentedly nod approval at a purchase.

Little Piece of Heaven

Incense sticks & holders, oil burners,

windchimes,

The second issue which raises my hackles and mars the shopping experience is the way large organisations coach their staff to converse with customers in a pre-determined and formulaic manner which is so insincere that silence is preferable. A few examples: • ‘How are you today?’ • ‘Have you finished all your shopping today?’ • ‘Did you find everything you were looking for?’ • ‘Enjoy the rest of your day’ and so on. We are all peppered with these trite phrases to which we are expected to respond in an equally automatic way, knowing full well neither party gives a toss for either question or the answer. Conventional moves keep our irritation in check.

I am sure that being expected to quote these insincerities over and over ad nauseam during their shift at work seriously inhibits staff from interacting naturally with customers. Some of us like a bit of banter, others do not. Most of us

dislike over-familiarity, appreciate politeness and a natural smile and cannot bear indifference from staff, which is inexcusably rude. Are the retail gurus aiming to train the humanity out of their staff to a point where we will be unable to distinguish between them and the automated self service tills (which order us about like Daleks) in the hope that we will get used to dealing just with machines and screens? I think they may be. What a dreadful prospect. Huxley’s ‘Brave New World’ is becoming a reality, with a sheep-like proletariat kept amused and controlled by a small, powerful elite. Before you dismiss me as a miserable old nutter, just think how browsing in shops, a social activity, is rapidly being replaced by browsing the internet, a solitary activity, with the huge social consequences already apparent.

Dear Margaret

There is a desperate shortage of both adopters and foster carers throughout the UK and more people from all walks of life are needed to come forward.

Many people still believe being gay or lesbian, whether they are single or in a same sex relationship, is a barrier to adopting or fostering, but this is just a myth.

Through our work, the British Association for Adoption & Fostering (BAAF) has met many amazing adoptive parents and foster carers from the LGBT community who have given hundreds of children a loving, safe and secure family life. We are, therefore, very pleased to support the LGBT Adoption and Fostering Week (4-10 March).

There will be information events held across the UK, throughout the week, which will include opportunities to speak to others who have already become a family through adoption or fostering. So if you are thinking about adoption or fostering, please come along and find out more. To find your nearest event, please visit www.lgbtadoptfosterweek.org.uk or for more general information about fostering and adoption, please visit www.baaf.org.uk. Dear Margaret

Please could you thank readers of The Cromer Times for the stamps they send me for the various charities that I support.

I am now getting short of stamps so if any readers have any stamps or know of anyone who does, please could I ask them to send them to me at the address below.

Could I also ask readers if they would be so kind as to make sure they put the correct postage on as I have had several lots where I have had to pay handling fees.

Best wishes to you all and keep saving stamps Yours sincerely Jayne Maning 111 Mill Road, Cromer NR27 0AD

Dear Margaret

It remains ironic how our MPs in Westminster are quick to support cuts, but when services are at risk in their backyard they are quick to show their concern, like they live two separate lifestyles. The latest story is the government cuts threatening the Norfolk Green Coasthopper which has been at risk after a fall in funding which led to a visit from Transport Minister Norman Baker who posed gleefully on a bus with our local MP.

While I am pleased this route has been given the recognition it deserves, the ministers should also have visited nearby towns and villages in north Norfolk where there are many rural bus routes that have been axed. The results are leaving our elderly isolated, and workers having to source other modes of transport to carry on in employment.

These cuts across the county will continue to hit our rural areas the hardest and threaten the lifeblood of many of our most thriving tourist hotspots. Jono Read Holt

Rhodri Oliver as the new Deputy Leader for North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) at the Full Council meeting on 23 January.

He succeeds Cllr. FitzPatrick, who was

appointed Leader of the Council in www.norfolk-valet.co.uk

December. It was also announced that Russell Wright would be joining the NNDC Cabinet.

Educated in Holt and living in Aylmerton, the new Deputy Leader was elected as Ward Member for Sheringham South in the District Council elections in May 2011. At 22, he is NNDC’s Cllr. Oliver youngest member, the 2011 council elections coinciding with his final exams at Imperial College, London, from where he successfully graduated with a degree in physics. He is currently studying for a law degree and is a keen racket sports player, representing Cromer in squash, table tennis and tennis. He will be a candidate for the Sheringham division in the county council elections in May.

Commenting, Cllr. Oliver said, “I have been actively involved in politics for over five years and am interested in all areas of local government. North Norfolk is a wonderful place but we know that as a council we can help our communities to make it even better. I am particularly keen

to show that young people can make a real difference and I hope that my appointment will encourage more young people to get actively involved in their local communities.”

Cllr. Fitzpatrick Russell Wright, 53, Member for the Astley Ward, which is centred on Melton Constable, and who runs a well-known design and build landscaping company, will join the six existing members of the ruling Conservative Cabinet, Tom FitzPatrick (Leader), Rhodri Oliver (Deputy Leader), Angie Fitch-Tillett, Trevor Ivory, John Lee and Wyndham Northam. Cllr. Wright was a member of NNDC 1991-1995, he was re-elected in 2011 and is currently also a member of Norfolk County Council.

Cllr. FitzPatrick said, “I am delighted to announce these two new appointments. Cllr. Wright will bring to the Cabinet many years of experience at both District and County authority level. He has solid business experience and this will be of real benefit in our work to help the economy in these challenging times. Cllr. Oliver has proven himself to be very able in his time on Cabinet and I am looking forward to working further with him in the coming months. I believe both these appointments will be welcome news.”
