Back to the ’80s School Production Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th February saw Cromer Academy's Performing Arts department perform two shows to packed audiences.
Both nights were a sell-out prior to the event and those who were fortunate to get their hands on the hottest tickets in Cromer were not disappointed. The cast performed with great enthusiasm and the audience responded to the wonderful array of nostalgic references and upbeat songs. We would like to extend our thanks once more to all the cast, extras, chorus including students from Cromer Junior School, band, technicians, backstage help with costumes, makeup, ticket sales and last but by no means least, the directors of the show, Mrs Hough and Mr Hensley. Many months of planning and rehearsals went into the production of the show and it was wonderful to see it supported so well by parents, students and members of the community.
Well done everyone!

CLAIRE MARTIN and her band AUDEN THEATRE, HOLT - Wednesday 27 March at 7.30pm
“The most gifted jazz singer this country has produced in twenty years” Clive Davis – The Sunday Times
Linn recording artist and BBC Radio 3 presenter Claire Martin has spent the last 25 years honing the craft of jazz singing. To worldwide critical acclaim she has established herself as a tour de force on the UK jazz scene, gaining many awards, including winning the British Jazz Awards six times- along the way.
Thanks to her jazz loving parents, Claire grew up in a household full of great music. She became a professional singer at 19, and three years later she realised her dream of singing at Ronnie Scott’s legendary jazz club in Soho. Signed to Linn Records in 1984 Claire has since released 15 cds with the label, collaborating with musical luminaries including Martin Taylor, John Martyn, Stephane Grappelli, Mark Nightingale, Sir Richard Rodney Bennett, Jim Mullen and Nigel Hitchcock on many of these recordings.
Claire has performed all over Europe and Asia with her trio and she also performs regularly with Richard Rodney Bennett in an intimate duo setting both in England and in America

Cromer Pier Seeks New Manager
Ian Hall, General Manager of Norfolk’s iconic Cromer Pier is set to move to pastures new after seven years at the helm of one of Norfolk’s best known landmarks and for Openwide Coastal, the company that operates the attraction on behalf of North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), the search is on for Ian’s replacement.
During Ian’s time at the pier he has seen it change from a summer season visit without even a cup of tea available for up to five months of the winter to becoming an all year round attraction with a diary of shows and a level of support and customer loyalty that is the envy of many other theatres.
Ian has this to say about his impending departure next month “I am sorry to be leaving Cromer and my biggest regret will be to leave behind the many friends, colleagues and wonderful people that I have met and who from the start made me feel so welcome. The pier is an incredible place to work each day, the location is fabulous and it has been an honour to be involved with the continuing success of the famous end-of-the-pier show Seaside Special. The pier team under Openwide management has lots of fresh and exciting initiatives underway to ensure that the business moves forward and has even more appeal to its customers. I feel strongly that the future for the pier is a very bright one.
“With the current major refurbishment of the pier on target and due to be completed this year
it is clear that NNDC, the owner of the pier, sees a sustainable and thriving future for the pier too. An exciting job opportunity combined with family reasons now take me away from Cromer, but I look forward to being one of the millions of people who enjoy their visits in the years to come.”
Steve Cutbush, Managing Director of Openwide, is equally enthusiastic about the future of the pier. With these exciting prospects in mind he will be enlisting Ian’s help during his remaining time in Cromer to seek a suitable replacement to lead this much-loved venue. He wishes Ian every success for the future.
his work has also ensured that Cromer Pier, and especially the iconic Seaside Special shows, remain incredibly popular and something we are all very proud to be associated with. His successor will have a hard act to follow.

Prom Fashion Show
Cromer Academy is once again hosting its very own fashion show on 14 March at 7pm, in the run up to the Leavers’ Prom taking place in June.
As well as the girls modelling an array of beautiful prom dresses from Maisie Mays’ Bridal & Prom Shop in North Walsham, we have joined forces with a local boutique, Lily B, based in Cromer.
A group of year 11 girls will be wearing a range of clothes and dresses from both shops on the red carpet and will be escorted by a selection of year 11 boys who will be suited and booted for the occasion!
Entrance to the show will be £2.50 and will include a ‘mocktail’ ( non alcoholic cocktail) upon arrival, created and served to you by Cromer Academy catering students.
Spaces are very limited at this popular event and it is likely to sell out very quickly so make sure you get your tickets NOW from Cromer Academy office.

Sanders Coaches Ltd are certainly keeping their eye on the ball
After a successful taster session in the summer, North Walsham girls under 12s was formed. The team was lucky enough to sign up 10 keen local young footballers. The team now competes in the under 12s Norfolk Women’s & Girls Football League, training once a week on Wednesdays with matches taking place on Saturdays. The girls went on to win the first game of the season 5-0 and now sit mid table in the league. The girls are run by Josh Roper and Georgia Bryant who recently passed their level 1 coaching award. Just a few weeks into the season the team approached Mr Charles Sanders, MD of Sanders Coaches Ltd who kindly agreed to sponsor the brand new kit. ‘The team are constantly improving week by week, all of them have been brilliant so far and have been a joy to coach. The team hopes to stay together for the next few years’.
The whole team and coaches are enjoying their first season and are looking forward to the up and coming summer tournaments and seasons to come. A big thank you goes to Gary who has helped with starting up the team and to Helen and Sanders Coaches Ltd who helped with the brilliant new kit and its sponsor.

The Friends of Cromer Museum
At our February meeting Ian Groves gave a talk on “Deserted Villages in Norfolk”. There are over 3000 deserted villages in Britain and 245 of these are in Norfolk. There are relatively few deserted villages in North Norfolk as the good soils in the area meant that villages could generally thrive but in Breckland there are many mainly because of the very thin soils.
The estate maps produced from the 17th century onwards are a good source for those seeking deserted villages. The easiest way of seeking them out today is by looking at Google Earth. The Archaeology Unit at Gressenhall
regularly receives information from individuals about possible sites apparently.
What do deserted villages look like? Well, mainly lumps and bumps in the landscape it seems although closer investigation may provide signs of tracks, house platforms, roads which seem to go nowhere or field boundaries. Pudding Norton and Godwich have these features.
Why were villages deserted? Only one in Norfolk, Little Ringstead near Fakenham, has positively been shown to have been deserted because of the Black Death. It was a contributory factor in the decline of many villages but led to the desertion of very few. Climate change is ardy certainly a factor. The 14th century was

very wet indeed, it seems, and this was followed by a mini ice age that lasted until about 1800. These were more likely to lead to desertion than the Black Death. Landowners are the main factor for the decline of villages in many areas. The Townshends at Raynham Hall bought up land as it became available in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Fermoys at East Barsham cleared villages to make way for sheep while the Walpoles at Houghton Hall moved Houghton when they were extending the parkland on their estate. Fortunately they built New Houghton as a replacement. More recently, of course, the Ministry of Defence cleared the villages of West Tofts and Tottington to make way for the Stanta Battle Area during the Second World War.
Cromer Museum organises visits to archaeological sites in the course of the year and anyone interested should contact the museum for details of this year’s visits.
Spring into action for Mother’s Day
As Mother’s Day approaches, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is asking people to think about new mothers and babies when they make a date to give blood.
Donated blood is vital for a wide variety of life-saving procedures in hospitals. In addition to accident and emergency situations, blood is often essential to new mothers during or after pregnancy. Premature babies may often need a blood transfusion as well, to replace the blood that is taken for essential testing as premature babies do not make many new blood cells in the first few weeks after birth.
NHS Blood and Transplant’s Lead Donor Relations Manager for the Anglia area, Derek Carr, said “During this month we would like people to think about not only their own mother, but also the mothers and families they can help with their blood donation. As one donation can help three adults or seven babies, donors really can make a difference and help to save a life. We have made it through the winter months due to the dedication of our existing blood donors, but the need for blood doesn’t stop and we still need donors to come forward throughout the year.”
Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7st 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.
For more information, to book an appointment or to find a local blood donor session please call 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Now that most people who require neutering vouchers contact us on the “neutering line most of the calls which Stephanie receives are for people looking for a new cat to join their family or for cats to come into care. However, a high proportion of the calls relating to cats to come in relate to “strays and I use this term loosely as so very often the cat concerned has a home not too many doors away from the caller. Stephanie was recently contacted by someone who had been feeding a stray for several weeks and was assured that neighbours had been contacted to check it had not got a home in the area. When a space became available Josh came into care and fortunately for him his fosterer checked to see if he had been micro-chipped (this is normal procedure with all strays that come into care). A few phone calls later we were able to reunite Josh with his family, who lived just a few doors away from the person who had handed him into care. Unfortunately they had misguidedly started to feed him when he was passing through their garden. They have now been advised not to encourage Josh to stray from his home by offering him food. We do now micro-chip all our cats. Kittens may also be chipped depending on their age, or can have this done when they go for their second vaccination. Those already chipped when they come into care are registered to their new owners when they leave for their new homes. This gives them a better chance of being reunited with their family should they go missing. If you Fidgit was abandoned by her have not had your cat chipped previous owner and came into please consider doing so. care via a neighbour

Winners of Firework photography competition announced
On Friday 25 January Fireworks committee Chairman Jim Bond and four other judges had the pleasure of judging the entries to the first New Year’s Day Fireworks photography competition. In total over 169 entries were received from across England. The judges, who also included EDP Photographer Antony Kelly, fireworks committee member Tony Shipp, Manager of Bennetts Simon Morton and photographer David Morris, were impressed by the very high standard of entries. Antony Kelly said “I was really impressed with the quality of photos. Photographing fireworks well is not an easy task, so to get so many outstanding entries was great to see. Although that did make choosing three winners very difficult”. First place went to Mark Bunning from Watton in Norfolk. Mark who was visiting Cromer especially to see the fireworks is a regular visitor to the town. Mark said “I love the opportunities Cromer gives me to take fantastic photos”. Mark’s winning image will also be transformed into the official event poster for 2014 and he also receives a Panasonic Lumix TZ30 camera prize donated by electrical store Bennetts. Mark said “Winning the photo competition is a great feeling, knowing that other people enjoy the images I take. I have always been into photography from an early age, always trying new techniques and trying to capture new ways to view the world”. Manager of Bennetts in Cromer, Simon Morton said “The Panasonic camera we have donated for first prize is an item we highly recommend in store. It has been a real pleasure being involved in the sponsoring and judging of the competition this year. As an East Anglian based company Bennetts does like to offer support to local community projects”. “The number of entries, quality of pictures
and the evident talent made the judging quite a difficult process. I think the three winners were well deserved and it was particularly rewarding to see after they were chosen how far afield the winners were. It's exactly what you would hope for the Fireworks event to do, draw people from near and far to our lovely town”. Judge Antony Kelly said of the winning image “It has everything right about it. The composition is perfect, it shows the crowds on the

beach, and all of the fireworks are clearly shown. Technically it is faultless”.
Entries to the competition were received from as far and wide as Lancashire, Suffolk, Buckinghamshire, Surrey and locations across Norfolk proving just how popular the event is to visitors and locals alike. Second prize went to Katherine Hodgson from Upton in Norfolk. Katherine, 20, who is currently studying mathematics at the University of Sheffield, said “I do photography in my free time and am currently partway through my second 365 project (taking a photo every day for a year). For this reason, I am rarely without my camera, and use it as often as I can. I’m

thrilled to have come second. Photography is a much-loved hobby of mine and the fact that it has placed in a competition is amazing!” Judge David Morris said Katherine’s photo “A blood-red sky full of excitement and a great close up on the crowd. You really feel like you’re there in the middle of the action. Terrific shot”.
Third prize went to Patrick Hudgell from Amersham in Buckinghamshire who is a frequent visitor to North Norfolk and has attended the fireworks for a few years. Patrick said “It is such a superb show that we now try to come every New Year. I am a keen photographer and found it a great challenge to try and capture the amazing spectacle of the fireworks going off over the sea while all the spectators line the beach and sea wall. I am delighted that the judges like my image. I am an active member of our local photography club, Amersham Photographic Society, and was delighted when the same image was awarded first place in this month's club competition”. David Morris said of Patrick’s shot “This is a considered photograph, further away and including parts of the town, it works really well and has a terrific sense of scale. And that riot of colour on the pier shows the photographer knew just when to press the shutter”. The competition, which was launched to mark the 14th New Year’s Day fireworks, has been hailed as a fabulous success. Firework committee member Tony Shipp said “contestants have obviously put a lot of thought into composing their pictures. Every contestant should be proud of the photographs they have entered”.
All the entries can currently be viewed on the events Facebook page ‘New Year’s Day Fireworks, Cromer’.
Merchant Navy - Unsung Heroes Not Sinking Without Trace Research Roadshow
Without the Merchant Navy, Britain would not, and could not, have survived the Second World War. Yet the stories of the brave men who served under the ‘Red Duster’ flag have largely been ignored – until now. Cromer can make the difference! Keystage Arts and Heritage is collecting stories of Merchant Navy veterans as part of a large-scale project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. They are also working with the Merchant Navy Association and historians from Anglia Ruskin University. Now they need the help of local people to research and gather these stories. We invite local people to attend the free Merchant Navy at War Roadshow. Keystage will show you how to research Merchant Navy stories, tell you about their exciting project and the amazing discoveries already made. They will tell you about the project’s unique exhibition, book and touring play not to mention a dedicated website in which the stories will be held for future generations. We ask locals: please do your bit to make sure that the amazing stories of the veterans of the wartime Merchant Navy never sink without trace. The event will be at RNLI Henry Blogg Museum, The Rocket House, The Gangway, Cromer, Norfolk NR27 9ET (telephone 01263 511294) on Saturday 23 March at 2pm until 3.30 pm. Entry is free. For more information: admin@keystage-company.co.uk or visit www.merchantnavyuntoldstories.co.uk If you have or had a relative in the Merchant Navy in WW2 and have a story to tell, please contact Mike Levy, admin@keystage-company.co.uk for inclusion on the dedicated website. Much more than Flowers Emms Stems at Southrepps is much more than a florist.
Yes they do specialise in floral displays of all kinds - for Weddings, Funerals and special occasions such as the up-coming Mother's Day. As well they are part of the Eflorist network so can make UK and International arrangements as well as delivering locally across North Norfolk. However they have many lovely handmade items from local suppliers and from far afield too.
"We have unique gifts, many from local suppliers such as 'Wooden It Be Lovely' who make handmade seasonal items such as hearts for Valentine's Day, handmade bunting and items with a seaside theme."
Handmade jewellery from Aviv in Israel is lovingly crafted in silver and semi-precious stones to suit every occasion. There are glass and ceramic vases, chocolates, helium balloons, Teddy Bears, local honey from Gimingham, handmade goodies from Bali, even Kew Gardens.
16
Something different for the gardener (or non-gardener) with special greetings cards which you plant in the ground from which flowers will grow.
"We're not difficult to find," said Emma. "Coming from Cromer, take the left turn at the crossroads (signed for Southrepps) just before you get to Thorpe Market, then turn immediately left again into the unmarked Hall Road and you will find us on the right hand side a few hundred yards down the road. And there is plenty of parking space."
Emms Stems also has a really useful Reminder Service, which help to make sure you don't forget that important person or occasion. Just visit www.emmsstems.co.uk and fill in the reminder service form or call into the shop and see Emma about filling the form in with you. Then Emma will send you either a text or email a week before the event to remind you to order your flowers.
Any business needs the personal touch when dealing with the big special occasion (full wedding service, corporate) and Emma has now a comfortable seating area so that customers can take their time and talk through their
requirements for the big day.
"This seating area is vital for making arrangements for weddings and funerals, we can now relax and take the time needed to understand what is needed to get the arrangements right for the occasion."
Final word from Emma, "After two years building up Emms Stems, I would like to thank all my friends and close family that have helped to grow our fledgling business, without them we would not have done so well so quickly."

Our first meeting of the year took place on 5 February when Nick Walmsley gave us a talk entitled “R101 and the Norfolk connection” after lunch at the Links Hotel, West Runton.
As well as telling us about the construction of the airship, Nick related the story of its disastrous final flight in 1930. The speaker was astonished to hear that two of our members had seen the R101 fly overhead on that night in North London and Tonbridge respectively. There were two visitors and one guest at the meeting and it is pleasing to report that all three have applied to join.
The next meeting will be on 5 March which will feature Dr. Ian Keymer giving an illustrated talk entitled "A vet's adventures in Colonial Africa".
If you are a retired, or nearly retired, gentleman and you like the sound of a monthly lunch followed by a speaker, you are very welcome to come along as a visitor and try us out. If you are interested, please contact Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or e-mail candsprobus@hotmail.co.uk for more information.
There is no requirement to live in either Cromer or Sheringham and whether you are an established resident or a newcomer to the area, you will get a warm welcome.
Sainsbury’s North Walsham gets it in the bag and supports their local community Sainsbury’s North Walsham has presented Suffield Park Bowls Club, Cromer with a Community Grant for £200.
This will help to support towards the cost of replacing the matting around the edge of the green, at the club on Station Road.
The Sainsbury’s Community Grant scheme, helping charitable groups in the local community, is funded by sales of ‘Bags for Life’. So for customers at Sainsbury’s North Walsham buying a ‘Bag for Life’, this means that they are not only doing great things for the environment, but are also making a contribution to their local community.
Sainsbury’s North Walsham Store Manager, Rob Wilkinson, said “Our store is at the heart of the local community and it is important that we can do as much as we can to support it. When we heard about Suffield Park Bowls Club, we were really pleased to be able to help out.”
Last year alone the Community Grants scheme provided £135k worth of donations, nominated by depot and store managers and colleagues from store nationwide.

CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY Mob: 07900 252168
For our February meeting the Society welcomed back Rosemary Ward to speak to us on gardens to visit in Norfolk.
The garden at East Ruston is very structural with a series of themed gardens but we were encouraged to look particularly at the many containers dotted around the garden. These can often be overlooked but are a considerable presence in their own right. The Bishop’s Garden in Norwich is frequently open at weekends and as well as seeing a beautiful garden visitors are also helping to support the many charities which benefit from its opening.

Staying in Norwich, Will Giles’ Exotic Garden
on the Yarmouth Road is unique with its collection of plants and shrubs not usually found in Britain. It is best seen in August and September as many of the tender plants there take a little while to recover from our Norfolk winters.
Fairhaven Garden at South Walsham is famous for its displays of primulas and Chestnut Farm at West Beckham is a must for lovers of snowdrops but should also be visited for its collection of daphnes. The variety “Jacqueline Postle” is in flower at the moment and should not be missed apparently.
Village garden days are a popular feature of summer weekends in Norfolk and Rosemary
was particularly impressed with the efforts of gardeners in Blofield and Wells. It is certainly worth keeping an eye out for these events as they can provide an ideal opportunity to see what amateur gardeners are capable of and provide us with interesting ideas for our own gardens. Some gardens are only open on one or two days a year and we were encouraged to take the opportunity of visiting Voewood at High Kelling and Hunworth Old Rectory if we had a chance.
Our next meeting is on Thursday 14 March at 7.30 in the Community Hall, Cromer. Pauline Harper will give a talk “U2 can grow Vegetables”. All are welcome. Cost £2.

GATHERING OF THE GIANTS - The big Poppy Line Steam Gala
Friday 8th - Sunday 10th March and Saturday 16th - Sunday 17th March
When the second world war ended in 1945, Britain’s railways were worn down and worn out. There was a vital need to design and build hundreds of steam engines as quickly as possible.
Now some of the biggest of the engines that got Britain going again will be running at the Poppy Line’s double-weekend Steam Gala, March 8-10 and 16 -17. They’ll be led by the iconic Britannia, first of a class of massive engines that helped restore express services throughout the country. Alongside Britannia will be wildlife artist David Shepherd’s Black Prince – an even more powerful engine, built to haul essential supplies of iron ore to the
steelworks from the docks.
Four other large engines from the early period of the nationalised British Railways will be showing their paces, giving an unforgettable snapshot of the time when the railways (and the country) were struggling to restore standards after the ravages of war.
Britannia is scheduled to come over Sheringham level crossing on Thursday 7th March. The timing has not yet been confirmed, but is expected to be during the afternoon.
Rover tickets offer unlimited travel all day on all the trains, and there’ll be an intensive steam
The key thing now is improvements for patients – Norman Lamb
The East of England Ambulance Trust is to bring in more full-time ambulances to provide extra cover for towns and villages including Cromer and Potter Heigham.
Commenting on the news, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “I welcome this news, which is a sign that the Trust is taking these issues seriously. I have persistently highlighted the problem of unacceptably slow response times, taking up concerns from the public and from ambulance staff themselves. The key thing now is that these steps bring improvements in the service for patients. I pay tribute to local paramedics who have consistently raised important concerns. They deserve our thanks.”

We opened our February meeting with a talk by Mr. Steven Brooks on Travel. It was not the sort of talk we expected and we were soon all wiping our eyes with tears of laughter. Mr. Brooks has been a travel agent for 32 years and owns his own company “Glenfield Travel” He is the longest serving travel agent in Leicester and puts his success down to his dad. He now has over 400 books available in his shop. Did you know that seventeen and a half thousand flight fly out of this country every day and that cruises are now taking over as the favourite type of holiday? For nearly an hour he kept us amused and we came away with aching sides. We then continued our meeting where we discussed our forthcoming visits to the theatre in Norwich to see an Agatha Christie play, “Spider’s Web and a trip to the Van Dal shoe factory. We are also taking part in the Crab and Lobster Weekend and one of our members has agreed to decorate our Lifebuoy. New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2.30pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street. Judy Roberts, Secretary

The Daffodil
She stands tall in the grey morning light, like a yellow lantern, What a cheerful sight. Others will follow in the next few days, Then I’ll see from my window a golden haze. They will nod their heads in a gentle breeze and make such a picture beneath the trees. March will have brought me a beautiful show Since we said goodbye to the winter snow.
