Issue 418 30th March 2013
Cromer Kids in Cracking Show! Hills are not usually the first things that spring to mind when Norfolk is mentioned, but soon hills will be alive with the sound of music, as this well loved show comes to North Norfolk. Starring in this well known show are two sets of Von Trapp Children, all of them local, and all of them incredibly talented.
Charlotte Pollard, aged 9, and who lives in Cromer will play the part of Brigitta on the Schnitzel team, and Sydney Meilsch who is 8, and lives in East Runton, will play the role of Marta on the Strudel team. Charlotte, who goes to Greshams Prep School, wants to be an actress when she is an adult, while Sydney, who goes to The Belfrey School in Overstrand, wants to be a vet.
These youngsters have been rehearsing with the other Von Trapp children since January, and have been learning songs, stage directions, scripts and even dance choreography to make this show a huge success. The show is being presented by the Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society, who have a reputation for putting on hugely successful shows.
NEW COMPETITION INSIDE THIS ISSUE!
The story of the would-be nun, Maria is well known, and this production promises to be another outstanding success with its lavish sets and costumes, slick production and glorious singing accompanied by a full orchestra. You can’t help but tap your feet to these catchy songs. You will be inspired by the astounding emotion of ‘Climb Ev’ry Mountain,’ sung by Janette Charlotte and Sydney Davidson in her role as Mother Abbess, and which, for many, is the most dramatic song in the entire show.
This is great all round family entertainment at its best. The show runs from May 25th to June 1st, with matinees on Sunday 26th May and Saturday 1st June. Tickets available from the Pavilion Theatre, Box Office Cromer, on 01263 512495.

Building excellence in the spotlight at regional awards
Five North Norfolk projects will be finalists in seven categories of the regional Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence Awards for 2013.
Projects from Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire are competing to be named the best in East Anglia, in 12 categories covering different types of building design, construction and use. The awards, to be given at a dinner at St Andrews Hall, Norwich, on Friday 26 April 2013, recognise projects that have been built to the highest standards, and demonstrate innovation and sustainability in design.
The five North Norfolk projects, nominated by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), are:
• Best Individual House – The Glass House, Holt. Developer/Owner – Derek Foreman, Architect/Agent – Tom Ground
Calls for action from Vodafone over loss of signal in North Walsham
North Norfolk Labour Party is calling on Vodafone to resolve problems affecting signals across north Norfolk - with reports of long-running issues affecting areas as widespread as Sheringham, Mundesley, Cromer, and North Walsham. Last year the local Labour Party had written to all phone providers calling for an improvement in communications infrastructure, and to ensure that there is a push to provide 3G signal in towns, and a decent signal for calls elsewhere. Cornerstone Telecommunications Infrastructure Limited (CTIL) representing O2 and Vodafone have since responded encouraging the district council to meet with the company to work together to meet these aims. However, in the shorter term, there is an urgent need from Vodafone to now resolve on-going problems affecting customers across the district with customers taking to social media to vent their frustrations. Reports of signal problems has stretched from Cromer to Mundesley and Sheringham to North Walsham. The party is now writing to Vodafone calling for urgent action - particularly as many local businesses who rely on mobile phones are losing trade as a result of the on-going issues. Stephen Burke, vice-chair of North Norfolk Labour Party, said "We are writing to Vodafone to ask for answers about the poor service customers in north Norfolk are getting. In rural areas, especially at this time of year in bad weather, it is essential that residents know they are getting a reliable phone signal. What started off as an issue for phone users in Sheringham has now become an issue across the district including Cromer, Mundesley, and North Walsham".
A Seaside Café offering a warm welcome throughout the year.
Serving traditional breakfasts, classic cafe food, homemade cakes and excellent coffee too. Cromer crab salads and sandwiches back on the menu very soon with the start of the new season. Open Monday to Saturday from 10am 10% discount for NHS staff The café is now operating a loyalty card scheme for all customers 11 High Street, Cromer NR27 9HG

"Keep Cromer Clean" campaign is launched
Staff at Cromer Pavilion Theatre, members of the community and some four-legged friends came together to launch the Keep Cromer Clean campaign, which has been set up to encourage people to clean up after their dogs.
Local shops and businesses in the town are being offered a supply of dog poo bags which they will be able to give to any dog owner who finds they suddenly need one. Dog owners will know where the bags are from red window stickers.
The campaign is being rolled out across Cromer and surrounding villages by local town councillors Jen Emery and Scott Eastwood - at no cost to the town's taxpayers.
Although most dog owners do clean up after their dogs, there is a small minority who don’t and who make life unpleasant for everyone else. The results can be seen in the streets where children walk to school, alleyways and open spaces of the town, and along the promenade.
Matthew Ansell, Box Office Manager at Cromer Pavilion Theatre says "I applaud and support Jen and Scott whole heartedly for taking the initiative to keep our much loved town clean not only for the residents but for the thousands of tourists that visit annually. If every dog owner obeyed the dog fouling laws then this would elevate the pressure off an already over stretched street cleansing department and now thanks to Jen there is no excuse."
Jen Emery, Cromer's newest town councillor, says "Anyone living in Cromer will have noticed how bad the dog-poo problem is in the town. It’s getting worse and is an unpleasant health hazard, as well as giving a bad impression of the town to visitors. People rightly feel strongly that something needs to be done about it. The Keep Cromer Clean campaign helps people who have been caught-short with their dog. It will hopefully also remind people that leaving their dog’s mess behind is unacceptable."

CLICKETY-KNIT!
I'm bored! Not an uncommon cry from the kids during the school holidays, but help is at hand (and it doesn't cost anything either).
The weekly Aylsham Country Market, held every Friday morning in Aylsham Town Hall, is offering youngsters of all ages the chance to learn the ancient and noble art of knitting during the Easter holiday. Market Manager Debra Kidd explains, "As well as offering some fantastic homemade food at the market, our producers also include some very skilled craftspeople. They will be on hand at our market on Friday 12 April to help teach young people how to knit, or if they already have the basics, how to improve their skills. We're calling it Clickety-Knit!"
Debra is asking that children are accompanied by an adult but they in turn can join in the fun or, if they want to relax while the kids clickety-knit, there is a café at the market where you can sit and enjoy a cuppa and cake.
Cromer Society Excursion
One activity of the Cromer Society which continues throughout the year are the regular Saturday excursions to the Maddermarket Theatre in Norwich - now organised by Mrs Rattle.
The next excursion will be a Saturday Matinee on 4 May (book by 2 April) to see "Duet for One".
The coach will leave Cromer Old Bus Station on Cadogan Road at 1pm. Cost is £15 members (£16 non-members).
For further details please contact Mrs Rattle on 01263 510003.
Aylsham Country Market is open from 8.50am to noon and prospective Clickety-knitters can just turn up at any time on 12 April. There's no need to take any wool or needles as these will be provided.
Aylsham Country Market is a co-operative of local producers. As well as a great selection of crafts, it also offers a wide variety of cakes, savouries like cheese biscuits and sausage rolls, desserts including bakewell tarts and lemon meringue pies, plus soups, eggs and even local goats meat. There's also a range of plants, fresh vegetables and fruit. For more information contact Debra Kidd on 01263 862396

Dear Margaret
How can anyone be so negative about so many sections of the NHS as the "grumpy old man". Let me put the other side of the situation... Firstly GPs provide primary care. Hospitals provide secondary care where that is needed. Cromer Hospital is far from a " very posh clinic". It is a modern hospital built for the modern day, as nowadays many treatments do not require an overnight stay but do need secondary care and once this is given patients are far more comfortable in their own homes. I - and many others - attend there for life prolonging treatment. On a regular basis many patients attend, as I do, for blood transfusions every 3-4 weeks. This definitely relieves the strain on the Weybourne Unit at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, which is incredibly busy. Patients come from some distance to get their transfusions as this is a treatment which cannot be unduly delayed. There are numerous other specialities at Cromer Hospital including haematology, ophthalmology, renal, ENT and rheumatology, where consultants visit and many varied treatments and appointments are offered. The nursing staff are responsible for some very complex treatments and are highly skilled in their roles. All the remaining staff at Cromer Hospital do their utmost to care for their patients and help in any way they can. Finally, not all GP surgeries send their patients to Cromer Hospital for blood tests. Many employ phlebotomists/nurses who take blood samples at their surgery premises and this can avoid unwell patients having to make that journey to Cromer. Regards Rosie, North Walsham

Dear Margaret
I have just read the article from the Grumpy Old Man regarding Cromer and Norwich and Norfolk University Hospitals. There was one important thing he didn’t mention and that is Eye Surgery. At Cromer Hospital if you have an appointment to see the consultant in the morning you can return to have an operation the same afternoon. The service is excellent and I believe only happens at Cromer. However I do agree that it would be helpful to patients if car parking was, for example, 50p for 30 minutes as this would encourage people to use the car park. Yours sincerely Maureen, North Walsham

Don’t forget the Dog this Easter! A New Norfolk Guide -
Easter is a time when we traditionally treat ourselves to a chocolate egg or a slice of delicious Simnel Cake. Such treats are intended for us humans to enjoy but do also contain ingredients that are poisonous to our four legged friends.
Chocolate contains Theobromine which is poisonous to dogs and dried fruits are also toxic. Please always consult your vet if you are concerned that your dog has eaten something poisonous.
So why not treat your dog to a tasty Liver Cake this Easter. Go on, they’ll love you for it!
The ingredients you will need for the cake are: 500 grams of flour, 500 grams of raw liver, 4 eggs and a cup of milk.
In a blender, whizz together the liver, eggs and milk until smooth and resembles a bloody milkshake. Pour into a mixing bowl, add the flour and mix well. You’ll end up with a stodgy, gooey mixture. Pour into a greased baking tray, cover and bake at 200 degrees for an hour and a half – two hours, until cooked through. Allow to cool then for the topping combine 100 grams of soft cheese such as Philadelphia with half a teaspoon of honey. Mix well and spread over the cool cake. Decorate with doggie choc drops. Store in the fridge and use within one week. Can be frozen (if it’s not all been eaten!)
From all at Animal Magic Dog Club we wish you a safe and happy Easter. Animal Magic Dog Club based near North Walsham is a fun, family orientated club offering a wide range of training for puppies, junior and adult dogs. Dogs Welcome... on the North Norfolk Coast
This new guide from the Appleyards is intended to help all dog owners enjoy their time on the North Norfolk Coast - it is helpful for visitors and residents alike. It covers the entire stretch of the coast from Snettisham to Winterton on Sea, providing lots of useful information, including the best dog friendly pubs, cafes, restaurants, campsites and visitors attractions. It advises on the restrictions applied to dogs on the beaches and promenades at the towns and villages on the coast. It also suggests the best dog walks - many incorporating the Norfolk Coast Path.
The book finishes by reminding dog owners to be responsible, by reiterating the parts of the Beach Code and the Coastal Code which relate to dogs.
This 64-page A5 book is illustrated with 170 colour photographs - taken by the Appleyards as they walked along the Norfolk Norfolk coast with Archie and Rosie, their two Norfolk Terriers. Steve & Alyson Appleyard have lived on the North Norfolk Coast in East Runton, for the past 12 years.
Editors Note: As a dog owner I was really impressed with this latest book from the Appleyards. It is a comprehensive guide not only to the beaches along the north Norfolk coast, and the restrictions imposed at different times of the year, but also to the coastal pubs, cafes, restaurants and attractions where dogs are just as welcome as their owners! Always nice to stop for refreshment when out on a walk and even nicer when our four legged friends are assured of a welcome too! An essential guide for dogs and their owners visiting our beautiful north Norfolk coast.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Stephanie has had several phone calls recently from people asking for advice because their cats have been toileting in inappropriate places. Discussing the problem with them she found that in each instance there was no litter tray in the house for the cats’ ablutions. It is important to have a tray, especially with young cats, and at this time of the year as it is difficult for them to “go” outside. Some people are concerned that the litter tray will be smelly but this does not happen if it is cleaned regularly. It also provides an opportunity to identify possible health issues.
When we re-home cats and kittens one of the most important questions we ask of new owners is that they keep their cats in at night and provide them with a litter tray. Keeping cats in at night (especially the very young ones) is as important as providing a litter tray and we recommend this for all cats whether re-homed by us or from another source. A recent instance of this was a cat which came into care because she was “weeing” everywhere who, after just one day, started to use the litter tray and has now been re-homed with no behavioural problems.
Most people are now aware that we microchip all our cats and kittens and the new owner’s details are recorded on-line as soon as possible after they have been re-homed. On occasion we take into care cats that have been micro chipped before joining us and in some instances the owner’s details have never been registered. We have also had instances where the cat has changed hands before joining us and the change of ownership has not been recorded or the owner has moved and not advised the micro chip company of the change. If these cats had gone missing there would have been no way of tracing the owners. If your cat is micro chipped please do make sure that its registration details are up to date.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club
Our monthly meeting was held on 5 March, when an excellent lunch at the Links Hotel, West Runton was followed by an illustrated talk by Dr. Ian Keymer entitled " A Vet's Adventures in Colonial Africa".
Ian spoke mostly about the political and social aspects of living and working in Malawi (then Nyasaland) but also covered his groundbreaking research into the lifecycle of a malarial parasite.
The next meeting will be on 2 April when the speaker will be Jacqui Palmer, the manager of the RNLI Henry Blogg Museum in Cromer, on the subject of “The Heritage of Henry Blogg”.
Many of our new members are introduced by existing members but approaches from other retired, or nearly retired, gentlemen are very welcome. Indeed, there have been 2 such phone calls since the last report.
The hotel has assured us that they have plenty of room for more of us so, if you are interested, contact Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 for more information and to arrange to attend a lunch. There is no obligation to join immediately; come and give it a try, then decide if you wish to attend regularly.
Britian’s third most popular pet is finally finding its feet in the Veterinary consulting room. For our April promotion at Miramar vets we are offering FREE rabbit clinics with our qualified nurses to promote the health and general well-being of these complex creatures. The rabbit’s digestive system is complicated, if not fed the correct diet, rabbits can suffer with serious digestive problems and dental issues for life. Unlimited hay or grass should always be available, with a mixture of fresh leafy green vegetables (the darker the green the better) and a complete pellet type food. Avoid the colourful cereal mix as this promotes selective feeding, resulting in an unbalanced diet. Fresh water from a bowl or bottle should also always be available. Any dietary changes should be made gradually, over several weeks, starting with small amounts of the new food gradually increasing in amounts while decreasing the old food. Rabbit Awareness Week Avoid grass cuttings from lawn mowers as they can lead to severe digestive disturbances. Fruit tree branches make excellent chewing sticks and keep rabbits amused for hours. They May 4th-12th need stimulation, so toys in the form of flower pots and paper towels that they can shred themselves must be available for your rabbit to be content. Cages need to be a MINIMUM of 60x24x24 inches per average rabbit, with a separate sleeping area and living quarters and daily access to a run for exercise. Rabbits should be placed in the hutch at night and covered in the winter months with waterproof covering, where possible take hutches into sheds or garages in wintery weather. In door rabbits still require daily out-door exercise with access to grass to eat and the sunshine for vitamin D production. Clean your rabbit out daily where they toilet, they usually go in one area of the hutch or run, with a thorough weekly clean of all straw and newspaper. Check your rabbit twice a day for signs of flystrike in the summer months. Rabbits may suffer with heatstroke in temperatures above 27˚ shade must be provided in the summer. Rabbits need yearly vaccinations to protect against Myxomatosis and RHD (Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease) both of which are often fatal. Worming is also an important part of rabbit care, required 2-4 times a year to prevent parasite s such as E. Cuniculi.
01263 822293
For further information about general rabbit care and husbandry please contact the nurses at the surgery, or visit www.miramarvets.co.uk to download a questionnaire, bring your completed questionnaire to the surgery when you book your FREE rabbit clinic.

Questions asked about the announcement of additional ambulances in Norfolk
North Norfolk Labour Party ‘cautiously’ welcomed a decision from the East of England Ambulance Service Trust to put five additional ambulances on the road in Norfolk – including additional hours in Cromer – but have criticised management
for the fact that none were in action on the day they were meant to start operating.
The Labour Party launched the ‘Act on Ambulances’ campaign last year following reports that cuts were taking away doublestaffed ambulances at the main bases of Cromer and North Walsham. Campaigners have argued with MPs and health officials that more ambulances were needed, and that resorting to Rapid Response Vehicles would not improve response times.
Now the East of England Ambulance Service Trust has announced five more will run in Norfolk – but it is currently dependent on ambulance staff doing the overtime to run them. In the first week it was reported none of those additional ambulances were running.
days after the announcement.
When we met both the previous and current chief executives of the trust, they were adamant they could not fund extra resources without making cuts elsewhere. So how is this being funded given the government cuts hitting the service, and for how long will it last?”
Denise Burke, chair of North Norfolk Labour Party, said “While we cautiously welcomed Make the most of longer days the announcement last month, we still With the days getting longer, NHS Blood and Transplant is asking continue to have people to think about blood donation as they start to make more plans. concerns about the As Spring starts, winter hibernation can be forgotten - with extended service north Norfolk daylight, Bank Holidays and Summer holidays to look forward to. is getting, especially But when you’re planning how you’re going to enjoy 2013, make sure as none of these you fit in giving blood. Derek Carr , Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHS Blood and Transplant for the Anglia area, said: “More daylight makes us all feel better and like we have more time and we’re asking people to think about giving blood as they start to make more plans. Being willing to spare some free time, a couple of times a year, means you can help us to save lives. We urge regular donors and those who haven’t been for some time to book appointments now. We also need new donors, especially 17-24year-olds, and would encourage people to find out more and sign up.” Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7st 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.

WAR REQUIEM
As part of the Gresham’s Britten Centenary Arts Festival, on Sunday 10 March, Gresham’s converted its Sports Hall into a large concert hall to enable more than 300 performers to take part in a spectacular performance of Old Greshamian, Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem.
Under the energetic and accomplished direction of Mark Jones, Director of Music at Gresham’s, the Choral Society drew singers from across Norfolk. The Chorus was joined by singers from both the Senior and Prep School and was accompanied by a large Sym-
phony Orchestra made up of sixty guest musicians. An audience of nearly 400 attended what is one of only two performances of Britten’s epic work in Norfolk this year. The work began with an atmospheric Requiem Aeternum with tolling bells and shimmering strings. The work is also scored for tenor and baritone soloists and a twelve piece Chamber Orchestra, who work together to intersperse the Mass setting with nine poems by Wilfred Owen. Britten’s evocative musical settings held the audience spellbound and the depth of meaning within the poems was heartrendingly brought to life by the two soloists, tenor Ben Thapa and baritone Robert Davies. The Dies Irae filled the hall with impressive brass fanfares and the electrifying atmosphere sent shivers down the spines of both
performers and listeners alike. From the balcony, the ethereal voices of the Prep School boy choristers joined by the girls’ choir, floated over the heads of the other performers. The third soloist, Posy Walton- Soprano and vocal coach at Gresham’s, came to the fore particularly in the Lacrimosa and the Libera Me where she managed to soar above both choir and orchestra with her impressive vocal range and timbre. The work ends with all forces combined and the hall was filled with a wall of sound that had the audience clinging to their seats. What an amazing occasion this was to celebrate the centenary of one of the leading composers of the twentieth century. Adventure Playground
The children at the Gresham’s Pre-Prep have been enjoying playing on a brand new climbing frame in their adventure playground. The old climbing frame had been out of use for a number of months and it was therefore with great excitement that the children watched the old climbing frame being removed and the new one being built.
The new climbing frame was funded by a donation from The Gresham’s Foundation, a donation from a Charitable Trust, a contribution from the School and money raised by the Pre-Prep Parent Teacher Association (PTA).

An official opening ceremony took place at the end of February and the children have been putting the climbing frame to good use!

other skills which one day may help them save a life or at least participate in emergencies and be on hand to offer first aid.
Pilot Officer Keerie discussed the joint training effort, “The Guides are attentive, eager to participate and clearly engaged in the training. Cadet Glover is learning, assisting and being a great ambassador for the Air Cadets. All this training will ensure the Guides all become efficient at first aid and this will be of considerable use to them in the future. It’s a win-win situation for everyone.” After the Guides earn their badge some may want to continue to learn to earn the St John Youth First Aider Badge.
Sheringham & Cromer Choral Society Spring Concert It was a beautiful setting in the newly refurbished St Peter's Church in Sheringham for some fine performances from the soloists and chorus at Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society’s Spring Concert.
The evening was dedicated to the memory of Aubrey Smith a long-standing member of the choir who died last year and the Society were delighted that several members of his family were able to join the audience including his son Doug Smith, Mayor of Sheringham.
Baritone soloist Jamie Wright gave a beautiful performance of Ralph Vaughan Williams Five Mystical Songs supported by the choir and Lawrence Tao at pianoforte. We were then treated to a delightful Franz Strauss duet for Horn and Klavier, Thema und Variationen op. 13 by Lynne Roberts (Horn) and Lawrence Tao (pianoforte).
Shortthorn’s
The concert concluded with Karl Jenkin's Requiem with the choir, on top form, directed by Nathan Waring with Lawrence Tao (organ) and Lynn Roberts (Horn).
This most enjoyable concert was much appreciated by a full audience.

Treats in store include works by Benjamin Britten plus Gounod’s rarely performed Messe Solennelle de Sainte-Cecile and Saint-Saens Organ Symphony.

environment I have been surprised and indeed overwhelmed by the loyalty of my clientele base. I am very grateful" says Matthew.
Boyer’s is offering a discount voucher for repairs that need doing to private vehicles. "This will go a little way to say thank you to my customers in Cromer and surrounding areas" states Matthew.
Liz Cornwall to stand for the people of Mundesley division
Liz Cornwall is to stand as Labour's candidate for the Mundesley division in the forthcoming May elections. The division includes the parishes of Antingham, Bacton, Gimingham, Knapton, Mundesley, Northrepps, Overstrand, Paston, Sidestrand, Swafield, Trimingham and Trunch.
Liz has lived in north Norfolk for the past twenty years with her husband Tom, and is no stranger to politics having served eight years as a district and town councillor. She also served two years as North Walsham's town mayor - giving her 100pc commitment to the job. Speaking on her selection Liz said: "I believe in representing the electorate irrespective of political views. I believe I am the right candidate to offer the people of Mundesley a change from the past, should they wish to see that happen".
Competition regulations to be changed Following intervention by the Liberal Democrats, rules concerning the role of competition within the NHS are to be changed. The regulations, made under Section 75 of the Health and Social Care Act govern competition, procurement and patient choice in the NHS. Liberal Democrats raised concerns that the rules did not match assurances given to them by Ministers during the passage of the Bill last year. Norman Lamb, MP for North Norfolk and Minister at the Department of Health, who acknowledged these concerns in Health Questions last week, announced in Parliament earlier this month that the regulations will be revised to ensure that they match those commitments and reinforce the importance of cooperation and integration.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Norman Lamb said “The regulations must be fully in line with the assurances given to [Parliament] during the passage of the Health and Social Care Bill… I made it clear in Health questions last week that we would review the regulations to ensure … that they were not open to any misinterpretation. The wording of the regulations has inadvertently created confusion and generated significant concerns about their effect… Concerns have been raised that commissioners would need to tender all services. That is not our intention and we will amend the regulations to remove any doubt. Concerns have been raised that Monitor would use the regulations to force commissioners to tender competitively. However, I recognise that the wording of the regulations has created uncertainty, so we will amend them to put this beyond doubt. Competition, as the Government made clear during the passage of the Bill, can only be a means to improve services for patients—not an end in itself. What is important is what is in patients’ best interests. There will be no privatisation of the NHS under this Government. Furthermore, there will be no special favours for the private sector, which were provided under the [Labour] Government. It was [the Labour] Government who gave £250 million to private providers of independent sector treatment centres—whether or not they delivered care.” Commenting further, Mr Lamb said “The amended regulations will also reinforce the duty on commissioners to integrate care and promote co-operation – a key Lib Dem commitment.”

CROMER WI
The meeting opened with some musical entertainment from Tony Ireland, husband of out President Miriam. Tony gave us a musical quiz on his keyboard with music from the shows, films and radio. He interspersed the music with stories from his musical career. We learnt that Phil Silvers of “Bilko” fame actually wrote the song Nancy with the Smiling Face which was sung by Frank Sinatra about his daughter. He also told us about Lionel Bart who amazingly could neither read nor write music and it all was composed in his head.
Tony ended with a rousing chorus of “We do Like to be beside the seaside” which everyone joined in with. After tea we continued with our meeting and two members had their names drawn out to win a bursary towards the cost of a visit to Denman Collage, where they can take part in many courses that the WI hold there.
Pat Fisher’s lovely hand sewn figures of St. George and the Dragon won our monthly competition and will go forward to our Group WI Noreaster competition. Many members also attended the WI Federation Annual Meeting in Norwich in March where one of the speakers was David Whiteley.
New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2.30pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street.

Norfolk’s Deserted Villages
(one-day workshop), with Ian Groves Friday 26 April 10am-3pm There are many deserted villages in Norfolk which became depopulated for a number of reasons, even in the 20th century. This workshop will examine some of these settlements, the causes behind their desertion, what to look for where a settlement once was and which ones can be visited today. Booking essential. THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER GARDENING WITH CHILDREN
Hopefully by the time this article is printed Spring will have arrived and we will be busy in the garden and this is the perfect time to introduce children to the joys of gardening. From the time they can walk they will naturally want to be out in the garden with you and want to join in your activities – digging, helping to push the wheelbarrow, watering crops, adding weeds to the compost, and so on. If you can find them small tools the enjoyment is even greater.
Children need a safe space to play but you can also set aside an area, perhaps a raised bed for them to grow vegetables and flowers of their own. Choose chunky seeds such as nasturtiums which will provide plenty of colour (and introduce them to blackfly) or runner beans which will remind them of Jack and the Beanstalk. Make a colourful sign telling everyone who is the gardener of the plot.
You can also use your time together in the garden to teach your garden about wildlife. Point out how the robin will come down to pick up the worms and insects that are
disturbed. Show how bees and insects pollinate the plants, how frogs and toads eat slugs and snails which might otherwise eat their plants.
You can involve all of the children’s senses: • Smell: Encourage them to smell flowers and herbs. Get them to rub the leaves of herbs and see if they can identify the different smells especially between the different types of mint.
• Taste: Grow vegetables and encourage children to taste fresh peas straight from the pod. Let them pick the first strawberries and raspberries and begin to realise the flavour of fresh fruit.
• Sight: There is so much for children to see in a garden and what a perfect way to learn all about their colours, buttercup yellow, rose red and cornflower blue.
• Sound: The garden is full of noise, the birds singing, the bees buzzing and the wind in the trees so encourage children to listen carefully to everything around them.
• Touch: Children reach out to feel what they see so encourage them to experience different textures outside. Let them feel the rough texture of a runner bean or the warm, smooth skin of a tomato. Just handling the soil and getting dirty is a great lesson in itself.
Older children can also be tempted away from their computers if they recognise your enthusiasm. Why not get them to grow for the
local produce show. The Sheringham Horticultural Society’s Carnival Show will be held in August with special classes for children. When the details are finalised full details will be included in this column.
Here are some of the things that children can be encouraged to do right now:
• Fill a large pot with multi purpose potting compost and distribute a dozen dwarf broad bean seeds evenly over the surface. Show them how to push the beans into the compost to about 4cms depth, then cover them and water well.
• Another simple idea is to grow mustard and cress on a sheet of wet kitchen paper on a saucer on the kitchen window. The results are very exciting. If growing both mustard and cress the cress needs to be sown a few days earlier.
Summary
• Encourage children to join in and provide them with their own tools and their own space.
• Help children to experience the wonders of the garden by using all their senses.
• Encourage wildlife into your garden for all round interest.
• Sowing seeds and harvesting are great fun. • A sense of competition with prizes can be a great motivator for older children.
CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY
Our March meeting opened with the unwelcome news that our Spring Show scheduled for mid March had been cancelled. The very cold weather had played havoc with members’ plans for the show and reluctantly the decision was taken to call off this traditional start to our year.
Spirits were raised once our speaker for the evening, Pauline Harper, began her talk and we were soon in a more optimistic frame of mind. Her topic was one familiar to most of our members, namely how to get the best results when growing vegetables. Her enthusiasm and knowledge was such that those present were soon looking beyond the disappointment of not having a spring show to the possibilities of what lies ahead in the rest of the gardening year.
Pauline brought with her 18 different vegetables that she had picked that morning or were in store. Nothing had come from her freezer. This shows what can be done with a bit of careful planning. Soil preparation is important and most of the digging needs to be out of the way by the end of winter. We were encouraged to see traditional flower beds as places where vegetables can be grown as many have bright flowers, foliage or stems which will not seem out of place.
Much of the advice we were given was familiar to most of our members but it was interesting to hear the speaker’s views on one or two practical points. Club root in brassicas can be avoided if plants are planted deeper than usual, lime is added to the soil and a good layer of compost is placed around each plant. The spacing of plants recommended by the seed producers can in most cases be reduced so more can be fitted into 24
the space available. If carrots are thinned in the evening the chances of attack from carrot root fly are reduced. All this was good advice and triggered some lively responses from members.
Our next meeting is on Thursday 11 April at 7.30 pm in the Community Hall in Cromer. The speaker is Simon Harrap and his talk has the intriguing title of “Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves”. When you hear that Simon is an authority on British wild orchids then the subject of his talk becomes clearer. Visitors are very welcome as usual. Cost £2.

Reach new heights with EACH
Thrill-seekers will once again have the opportunity to scale new heights for charity as East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) offers fundraisers the opportunity to abseil down one of Norwich’s tallest buildings.
offering use of the iconic Norfolk Tower for the abseil event. It was a fantastic event last year and quite unique - scaling one of the tallest buildings in Norwich City Centre.
EACH has launched a charity abseil event today which will see participants descend 150ft down the Norfolk Tower. It’s one of the city’s tallest buildings offering participants breathtaking views across the whole of Norwich.
The abseil is very kindly supported by MAHB landlords of the Norfolk Tower, who have again offered EACH the use of the building free of charge.
The event, once again being managed by the Norfolk Army Cadet Force, will take place at The Norfolk Tower, Surrey Street, Norwich on Sunday April 14 between 10am and 4pm. It costs £25 to register and participants are asked to raise a minimum of £100 in sponsorship. Only 60 places are available and are expected to be taken quickly.
Matt Bartram Director of MAHB, and landlord at Norfolk Tower said: “ We are absolutely delighted to be able to offer our support to EACH for the second successive year by
success. To have the support of Matt and MAHB in giving us free use of the building once again is absolutely fantastic – we raised an incredible amount last year and we are looking to increase on it this year.
“To deliver our services this year we need to raise £5.75 million which amounts to £15,000 a day, every day of the year and events such as this will go a long way in helping us achieve this figure. With only 60 places available we expect demand to once again be high so I would urge anyone interested in the abseil to sign up as soon as possible.”
There are limited places available and I would encourage people to get involved, take part and raise funds for local children and their families.”
Gary Cook, EACH Norfolk Fundraiser said “We’re really looking forward to the abseil.
We ran it for the first time last year and it was a great

Progressing Nicely
It's been two years of hard work for Mark and Gail, minehosts at the Kings Head in Cromer. It has taken a serious amount of TLC to make it a venue that locals and visitors would want to spend an hour or two relaxing in.
But despite the recession, the general financial climate, the weather, you name it, they have continued to invest in and improve the business to make it a better place for locals and tourists alike.
There's a nicely refurbished Beer Garden, with a covered area, crucial with our variable weather.
There is also a new kitchen. Mark commented, "For the first time we are serving food all year round and in keeping with the needs of modern life."
They have replaced much of the furniture and are in the process of giving it a brighter aspect and with new decor, much more than just a lick of paint.
It's a pet and child friendly pub, where customers can now access free 'wi-fi' along with their favourite tipple.
Last word to Mark and Gail, "We would like to thank all the regulars for their support in helping us put The Kings Head back to its former glory. And we are planning a series of offers through the year to say thank you in a material way. We look forward to seeing old and new friends alike."

Groveland Farm Shop – Watch this space!
Over the next two years Groveland Farm Shop and Restaurant will be undergoing sympathetic refurbishments, without losing its old-world Farm Shop charm. Whilst expensive, refurbishments will enhance the efforts already put in by the staff to continually enhance customer experience. The Restaurant has already benefited from a repaint and a display of lovely photos and artwork by local amateurs (available for sale).
forward to continuing to provide excellent service making Groveland Restaurant the place to dine.
As well as a busy restaurant to run, Greg and his team are looking forward to creating delicacies for the Groveland Deli and Bakery (both earmarked for refurbishment this year). Using the Farm Shop as his larder, a whole host of savoury and sweet goodies will be made by Greg and his team and will be available in the Deli including delicious pies, pasties, quiches and sausage rolls as well as scones, flapjacks and gorgeous brownies (a favourite in the restaurant). If you fancy anything special just let Greg know and he will do his best to provide.
The first major face lift was kicked off this year with a revamping of the “facilities” in the Restaurant. The quality of the food over the past year has been excellent, the waiting staff smart, professional and friendly and the ambiance wonderful, however this was spoilt by dated, tired toilet facilities. Following successful themed evenings, a Sunday Carvery and an à la Carte service on Fridays and Saturdays customers constructive criticisms have been listened to and prioritised. Customers have been generous with their praise and appreciation of the changes. Chef Manager Greg Kaye is pleased with the feedback received and is looking

As well as a growing Garden Centre and Gift Shop, Groveland have also created a new co-operative Craft Shop area within the main hall. Run by local craftspeople it will provide a friendly area for like minded people to come and share their ideas and skills without incurring running costs. If you are interested in being part of the co-operative why not pop in and have a chat.
Refurbishment of the bakery has already started and, as well as the normal loaf, soon you’ll be able to buy fresh croissants, sharing and tearing breads, delicious cakes and sweet pastries.

CROMER MUSIC EVENINGS
Young Musicians’ Concert Held at Templewood, Northrepps, on Sunday 24 February
Cromer Music Evenings presented some of the most talented young amateur performers in our county - the aim being to give them an opportunity to perform to a live audience within the intimate confines of the Music Room at Templewood.
Patricia Cooney (Soprano) - sang confidently works by Mozart, Brahms, Schumann and Quilter, all based on the theme - What is Love?
Rachael Crook (Clarinet) - played Prelude and Summer from the Victorian Kitchen Garden Suite by Paul Reade and Fantasy Piece No 1 Op 73 by Schumann - a most relaxed and able performance.
Dylan Latham (Violin) - just 12 years old, gave superb performances of Violin Concerto No 3 in G major, 1st movement by Mozart and
30
Praeludium and Allegro by Krieslar. This young man shows great promise!
Ellen Sargen (Flute) - played with ease Ballade by Carl Reinecke and the ever popular Syrinx by Debussy.
The pianist George Jefford, gave a very sensitive account of Debussy’s Reverie in romantic and impressionistic style, then with ease captured the classical style of Hayden’s Sonata Hob XV1 41 with its numerous embellishments fluently played, confirming the technical ability already established within this young artist - Chopin’s Prelude in B minor followed the Haydn where, I think, the tempo was rather fast and the use of rubato was missing which is vital in this Prelude, especially in this key B minor.

The last work of the concert - Concerto for Alto Saxophone by Ronald Binge played with such self belief, with pure quality of tone, impeccable breath control in the phrasing - coupled with varying dynamics and tone gradations, all amounting to a most mature performance by 17 year old Finlay McEwan, who is currently Norfolk’s Young Musician of the Year.
Ro Curtis should be congratulatedon bringing these talented and very young artists to Templewood who all performed to a high standard, delighting the full house. The three accomplished accompanists, David Neil Jones, Ann Burdett and Duncan Barlow gave the best support any one could wish for.
It was very obvious today that young people in their chosen art seem to raise standards of performance on the occasion of such concerts, for which we can thank their teachers, the countless hours spent practising and yes, their parents.
Cromer Times 418 March 30th 2013
Friends of Cromer Museum Earlier this month Stan Hurn of Gunton Station gave the Friends of Cromer Museum an enthralling talk on the development of railways in North Norfolk.
His father was a railway-man and he became absorbed by the history of the line to Cromer from an early age. His career was spent in the City but in 1988 he was able to purchase and conserve the western side of Gunton Station the up-line on the other side is still very much a working station on today’s ‘Bittern Line’. For this achievement Stan has won four conservation awards.
Railways came late to north Norfolk. They only reached Cromer in 1877, 37 years after arriving in Norwich and Great Yarmouth. This was partly due to the vested interest of its main promoter, Lord Suffield of Gunton Park hence the name of Gunton Station, even though it is located in the parish of Southrepps. When the royal family rented Gunton Hall for a year in 1870, it was still dependant on horse-drawn carriages for transport. All that changed when Gunton Station was completed with its lavish royal accommodation.
The history of the line then developed in phases which Stan illustrated with old photographs and he even had models of early train engines that used the line to Cromer. Lord Suffield had invested heavily in the earlier Dilham Canal leading to Antingham. He was more interested in moving freight than passengers so he was reluctant to promote the new railway across his 15,000 acre estate. Eventually Lord Suffield formed a syndicate with other local aristocrats and bankers. The first steam engines looked like those used on the Great Western Line with huge central wheels. Soon stronger engines were needed as the number of carriages increased. This was to bring large numbers of holiday makers to Cromer and other coastal resorts on the Norfolk coast. By the late 1800s Lord Suffield was selling blocks of house plots in his grand development of Suffield Park adjacent to Cromer. Trains were especially commissioned to bring people to the auctions. Patronage by the Prince of Wales boosted the new development.
By 1887 Cromer Beach Station was opened by the Eastern Midland Railway Company and this helped to trigger an influx of fashionable people able afford to stay in expensive hotels. Several large hotels were built in Cromer on a lavish scale of which the Royal Links Hotel in the Lighthouse Hills was perhaps the biggest. The interiors of the carriages were especially lavish – even in the third class compartments. During the Edwardian period the Norfolk coast was promoted with the famous ‘Poppyland’ story. This was the golden era of railway travel when it was possible to go from London to Cromer on a summer express in less than three hours.
In 1907 the train to Cromer was called the Norfolk Coast Express. It became the ultimate in luxury with the finest chefs cooking for all classes in the restaurant cars. By this date there was a huge rail network stretching over most of Norfolk. North Walsham and Cromer each had two stations served by different companies. The London season ended in May and shooting on the landed estates began in September. This meant that the holiday season for moving large numbers of wealthy tourists lasted only between June and August. In 1913 luxurious Pullman cars on the London – Cromer line, were introduced but these were a financial failure. The 1st World War changed everything and the number of visitors to Cromer dropped dramatically. Rolling stock became run-down. Cromer was still only a large village of 2000 people outside the tourist season in 1914 so the railway to it from London was demoted to a branch line.
Almost 50 years ago to the day, the Beeching Report was published which threatened to close the Norwich to Cromer line entirely. It hung on by a thread and today it is a booming asset to that part of Norfolk. Both Cromer and North Walsham now have just one station each. The buildings of Cromer Beach Station survive as a restaurant. An even greater miracle is that
The Afternoon Club
Gunton Station is still open and operational. Now things are moving in reverse and the plan is to re-open some of the lost railway lines. That has already been achieved in Sheringham. The talk lasted for nearly two hours but it held its large audience of 37 people enthralled. The history of this railway line is synonymous with the history of Cromer in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Let’s hope that can continue.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon
Our Taster Menu is proving to be very popular with our diners and we are delighted with the comments we have received. We are going to continue with the menu for the coming months while we start thinking about our summer menus. Planning new menus is always an interesting and exciting task, with so many local growers and producers in north Norfolk choosing fresh produce is a pleasure. We endeavour to use as many local suppliers as possible as we believe in supporting local businesses and know that we almost certainly will not find better.
With Easter just a week or so away we are expecting a busy time and are looking forward to serving some of the many visitors to Overstrand who return to the village each year for the Easter break. Our special ‘Family Sunday Roast’ will remain on the menu for the coming weeks, it’s a great way for the whole family to enjoy a traditional Sunday Roast and
we believe real value for money. We have just launched our new Wine List, retaining some of our most popular bottles whilst introducing some new and tantalising wines for our diners to try. Have a good Easter and we hope to see you at the White Horse very soon.
Full details can be found on our web site www.whitehorseoverstrand.co.uk
Nathan’s recipe for Chocolate Chip Cookies
Method Melt the 16oz of chocolate and set aside.
With an electric mixer combine the sugar and butter, add the eggs then add the vanila, salt and flour.
With mixer still working the mix, drizzle in the melted chocolate and add chocolate chips and pecan nuts.
Ingredients 16oz Good quality Chocolate 2oz Salted Butter 12oz Granulated Sugar 4 Large Eggs 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract or Essence 2oz Cake Flour Pinch of Salt 14oz Chocolate Chips 4oz Pecan Nuts Chopped and Toasted
Line a flat baking tray with baking parchment.
Heat oven to 180c then with an ice cream scoop, or two tablespoons, scoop the dough about 8cm (1 scoop per cookie) place on the tray and bake for 10-12 minutes.
This mix is very versatile so why not try white chocolate and almond or milk chocolate and pistachio.
Aviva Supports Local Environment
A frying pan, a mobile phone and some guttering were just some of the items collected when Aviva’s Customer Communication and Design Team spent Friday 1 March litter picking on Cromer beach.
Their efforts were part of Aviva’s volunteering scheme, which allows staff to support one or more of the company’s four business themes, which are environment, road safety, health and financial education.
Simon Jones, pictured said “In total we’ve filled more than 25 bags with litter from the beach and promenade. It’s great to be out in the fresh air while also helping make this lovely part of North Norfolk even nicer.
We’ve previously helped a local primary school repair their garden when it was vandalised and also did scrub clearance for the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. We’re now looking at ways we can help with financial education, another of Aviva’s business themes.”

NORTH NORFOLK COMMUNITY TRANSPORT ASSOCIATION NWACTA Changes its Name
It was in 1999 that the community transport operation based in North Walsham to serve sections of North East Norfolk was created, and its full title was North Walsham Area Community Transport Association (NWACTA).
In the course of the last dozen years our operations have extended into a much wider area. It was in 2004 that our sister organization, based in Holt, had to cease operations and NWACTA took on the provision of their services. In subsequent years, we have also taken over the community transport provided by other organizations that were unable to continue. We are currently exploring how to further extend the area we serve, particularly in a westerly direction. It means that for some time we could more accurately have been described as the North Norfolk Community Transport Association, which is the title that the Trustees have now adopted.
One reason for informing you about the change of name now is that Waitrose have very kindly agreed that in April we will be one of the three charities that it will support. (Waitrose is a popular destination for some of our passengers.) We would be delighted and grateful if your readers would put their green discs in the container labelled North Norfolk Community Transport Association.
We are in the process of improving our fleet. We have just taken on two new vehicles; a Mercedes 16 seater mini-bus and a Kia Seconda mpv (generously financed by Victory Housing some of whose tenants travel with us) which we can use when a small vehicle is more suitable than a minibus. Both are fully accessible. We would like to remind readers that we provide a range of services:
Your Orchestra Needs You!
Did you use to play a musical instrument and regret giving it up? Have you got a violin gathering dust in the attic or a trombone hidden away in the corner of the garage? If so, why not come along to Cromer High School from 7-9pm on a Monday evening. Cromer Chamber Orchestra is a friendly group of amateur musicians who meet during term time to enjoy playing a variety of musical styles ranging from Mozart to Les Misérables. New players are always most welcome, no audition is necessary and there are no age restrictions our youngest player is 14 and our oldest 86! Why not come along and rediscover the enjoyment that playing a musical instrument brings!
Our dial-a-bus services are door-to-door and take people to the various market towns; we provide group transport for charity and community organisations to take their members to meetings or on excursions; we have a car service to take people to medical 4appointments both to hospitals and to doctors’ surgeries and for other medical purposes.
To learn more, access our new web-site at northnorfolkcommunitytransport.co.uk on which you can also make bookings if you wish. Most people still prefer to email us at admin.nnct@ btconnect.com or phone us on either 01263 839009 or 01692 500840.
We are keen to know of new passengers and places in North Norfolk which are currently without transport services that we might be able to supply. We are able to help all age-groups who are without public transport at the times or to the destinations they need so if readers know of gaps please let us know so that we can look for ways of filling them.
We look forward to serving many more of North Norfolk’s residents.
We would particularly like to hear from string and brass players who have reached Grade V standard and above.
If you are interested in joining us or would like further details please contact Norman Moor on 01263 511600.
North Walsham Artist’s Struggle to Draw and Paint Again Culminates in Exhibition at Picturecraft in Holt
Last year in January 2012 part time amateur Norfolk artist Jamie Cooper from North Walsham woke up with a pain in his shoulder and a dead right arm.
Jamie takes up the story; ‘I thought that it would pass if I just left it. However, it continued to get worse. After six weeks I had developed a severe limp as walking seemed to jar my neck and cause extreme pain down my arm and suffer loss of feeling in my right hand. Being a part-time artist this made it extremely difficult to pursue my hobby, as I am right handed. It had become a noticeable problem at work and my wife insisted that I went to chiropractic here in North Walsham. After four treatments in a two week period the chiropractor refused to see me until I had a MRI scan and he referred me to my doctor.
The weeks went by and the wait seemed endless. We couldn’t afford for me to go private and so I carried on work, where I had recently been promoted. The pain increased all of the time until I could only lift the lightest of things with difficulty and definitely could no longer draw or paint. I had the scan in mid April. Fitting me in the MRI machine had been an extremely tough job and caused a lot of pain. The next three days I ended up bedridden, Cromer Times 418 March 30th 2013
not able to move at all. After two weeks off of work I returned but just became worse again and so had to go off sick and remain off work. I wasn’t able to return until late October and felt totally useless in all of this time. I couldn’t even lift a pencil to draw, and had never been off work in my life for more than a few days. My scan results came back and it showed that I had two slipped discs in my neck which was causing the nerves serving my right side to be constantly rubbed. One spinal consultant at the NNUH told my wife and I that without an operation I could lose the feeling in my legs too.
Following referral to the NNUH I had to wait for an operation to remove the offending discs, replace them with cages, fuse the vertebrae together and have two plates put in the back of my neck.
There is a huge waiting list for this sort of operation but luckily I was able to take a cancellation in October (otherwise I might have had to wait until April 2013). Dr Rai’s team at the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital successfully performed the operation and I was able to return to work in November - just in the nick of time, as I had already lost my promotion and was very close to losing my job.
Apart from being able to resume a normal life,
I also regained most of the use of my right arm. Alas, some permanent damage had been done but this improves slightly each week. I don’t feel confident that I will be able to do all that I could before but am now able to draw and paint again and so cherish this ability very highly and am grateful to Dr Rai and his team at the NNUH.
The success of the operation is testament to the skills of Dr Rai and his team and I currently have an exhibition of some of my pen and watercolours at Picturecraft Gallery in Holt. The exhibition continues until the 10 April’.
Dr Rai also raises funds for his own charity called Spine Aid: www.justgiving.com/spineaid 33
