CROMER FLOWER CLUB
Dulcie Lofting demonstrated in March with her title ‘Renaissance’ meaning revival or re-birth.
Her designs reflected on Spring and Easter with delightful tulips, narcissi and lilies with fresh new year foliage.
Dulcie also judged the competition ‘In a Picture Frame’ and was very complimentary about the standard of entries. She awarded Best in Show to novice Pat Skillern.
Our next meeting will be on Monday 15 April at 7.30pm at Cromer Junior School with Penny Stone demonstrating ‘Flowers in your Hair’. The competition will be ‘Easter Bonnet’. Visitors are always welcome.

Entice them with the promise of getting up close with the birds of prey from the Seal and Bird Rescue Trust, a treasure trail within the Nursery grounds, planting seeds to take home and, if they are good, lunch or a cake from Purdy’s tea room.
This year’s event, on 18th and 19th May, also brings together five local garden designers competing to win the Woodgate Nursery Best Garden Design Award, voted for by you. Not only will you be inspired and find out how to create these differing ‘looks’ in your garden, but by simply voting you will automatically be entered into a prize draw, with a £50 garden voucher as first prize.
Last year’s winner, Woodgate Nursery, will be trying to retain their trophy; and after winning Gold, Best in Show and People’s Choice for their show garden at the 2012 Sandringham
Peter Purdy, Woodgate Nursery owner said, “People who currently visit us know that we have quality plants and offer great advice, this event just takes this ethos to the next level and a wider audience. We hope that it gives everyone, from the novice to the experienced gardener the opportunity to access a broad range of expert gardening advice for free, whilst also being a fun day out for all the family and helping to raise some money for a good cause..” Purdy’s Tea Room will be open as usual from 10am to 5pm and will be offering a selection of light lunches, freshly baked cakes and scones, Lavazza coffee and speciality teas.
Perhaps you want to create the perfect lawn (or one a little better than your neighbours) then you will want to make a beeline for Green Thumb lawn care or Mobile Mowers garden machinery equipment . There will also be demonstrations from Woodgate Forge, Drew Charlton Willow Fencing and Rutland Willow weaving, craft stands, Norfolk Farm Shepherds Huts and other vegetable growing and garden structures.
Although the event is free entry, there will be collection buckets available for anyone wishing to make a donation to the Air Ambulance, with last year’s event raising over £600.
The Woodgate Nursery Garden Design and Advice Weekend is from 10am to 5pm on both Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th May. See www.woodgatenursery.co.uk for more details. Woodgate,Nursery, Cawston Road, Aylsham, NR11 6UH. 01263 731510

Red Arrows will not be at Cromer Carnival in 2013
Cromer Carnival committee has confirmed that their application for the Red Arrows at this year’s Carnival has been unsuccessful.
A spokesman for the Red Arrows said “Every year the number of requests far outstrips the resources available. We do look at all options to support as many events throughout the country as possible”.
The spokesman confirmed that the Carnival’s bid for the Red Arrows in 2014 will not be hindered by this year’s outcome.
The Red Arrows who have been coming to Cromer since 1981 are traditionally one of the highlights of Carnival Day. Over the past 31 years Cromer has been very fortunate to have them attend the Carnival over 25 times.
Carnival Chairman Tony Shipp said “We are obviously disappointed that the Red Arrows will not be with us this year. The first question I am always asked at the beginning of the year is "have we got the Red Arrows? They have become synonymous with Cromer Carnival and whilst the Carnival Committee can find the money to pay for them we will continue putting in the application each September.”

Cromer tourist hot spots set for springtime spruce up North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is about to give Cromer’s Pier and historic ‘Doctor’s Steps’ a springtime spruce-up so that they will look their very best in good time for the main summer school holidays.
The iconic pier - recently used as a filming location for ‘Alan Partridge -The Movie’ and BBC’s ‘Escape to the Country’, and which has just been recognised as runner-up in this year’s National Piers Society ‘Pier of the Year’ award – will receive minor repairs to its benches, handrails and shelters, which will then all be repainted, along with the exterior of the ‘end of pier’ Pavilion Theatre. The work, which has a budget of £30,000, will take place alongside the on-going £1.1m major pier maintenance and repair programme, is due to start on 15 April and to be completed by early July.
The ‘Doctor’s Steps’ link the eastern end of Cromer’s popular North Lodge Park with the town’s East Promenade. Now a zig-zag slope with a wooden gangway at the top, the ‘steps’ date back to the late 18th Century when Sydney Terry, the only doctor in Cromer in 1796, had some steps made down the cliff to the sea front to assist his patients reach the beach to indulge in sea-bathing therapy.
The ‘steps’ will be closed for two weeks from 8 April for two weeks so that necessary repairs can be made to the steel supporting structure of the gangway, and the aging timbers be replaced with new oak decking. The work will also include the repair and repainting of the handrails.

ROTARY COLLECTION RAISES OVER £1000 FOR MARIE CURIE
Over a period of two days last month, Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club collected £1091.50 on behalf of the Marie Curie Foundation. The collection, outside Morrisons’ Cromer store, realised £591-50 on the Friday and £500 on the Saturday.
“We are delighted to continue our support for Marie Curie Cancer Care and the figures demonstrate the high regard among the public for this crucial charity.” said local Rotary President, Peter Stibbons.
Assets, Rhodri Oliver, said, “Tourism is essential for the well-being of the North Norfolk economy and everyone who lives here, and so it’s very important that our main tourist areas look their best. The Council has been improving many tourist assets across the district in the last three years, promenades, toilets, car parks, and the repairs to the pier and Doctor’s Steps in Cromer are just the latest in a long and expensive but essential programme of works.”

North Norfolk Speakers Club
North Norfolk Speakers Club held an International Speech Contest and Evaluation Contest in North Walsham on Wednesday 6 March.
The event was well attended and the standard of speakers notably high. Club President Gillian Beecroft was Contest Chair for the International Speech Contest, which was won by Carolyn Williams for her speech ‘The Story of a Somerset Lad’.
David Ley won the Evaluation Contest, for which Kay Daze was Contest Chair.
Both winning contestants represented North Norfolk Speakers Club at the Area Contest on Monday 25 March, in Dereham. Against stiff competition, David Ley won second place in the Evaluation Contest.

An EACH band for your hand
East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) has launched a new wristband to raise vital funds and awareness for the charity.
The EACH wristbands are in the charity’s branded purple and orange colours and feature the EACH logo. They’ll be on sale online, in EACH shops and at fundraising events.
Melanie Chew, EACH Director of Fundraising, said: “We’re really pleased with the new wristbands and are confident they’ll be popular with our supporters. They’re a great way to raise funds and because they’re really colourful they’ll be noticed and help us to raise the profile and awareness of EACH too.”
The wristbands are available from the EACH website www.each.org.uk/wristband and cost £1.50 including postage and packaging. They will also be sold in EACH shops and at events for £1. The launch of the wristbands follows the success of The EACH Bracelet which was designed by Ed Sheeran’s mum Imogen, features orange and purple ‘smartie-style’ beads and retails at £10. The EACH Bracelet was worn by HRH The Duchess of Cambridge when she visited The Treehouse in March last year which boosted sales.
From left, Evaluation Contest winner David Ley, Kay Daze, Gillian Beecroft and International Speech Contest winner Carolyn Williams
North Norfolk Speakers Club meets every other Wednesday at 7pm at North Walsham High School, Spencer Avenue. New members and guests are always welcome.

Petition set up for Vodafone customers to detail anger over signal problems
A petition has been set-up to record comments about the on-going Vodafone signal problems that have continued to inconvenience businesses and traders, tourists, and residents in the north Norfolk area since October.
Last month Vodafone assured customers that all faulty hardware at local masts had been replaced - but could not guarantee that faults wouldn't occur further down the line. And over the Easter weekend customers living across Mundesley, North Walsham, Aylsham, Cromer, and Sheringham have suffered from the issue again.
North Norfolk Labour Party has since set up a petition - www.vodafonenfk.com - which it hopes will detail public anger to provide to Vodafone representatives, after being approached by disappointed business owners and residents.
Jono Read, press officer for North Norfolk Labour Party, said: "The statements from Vodafone are simply not good enough. They are expecting customers to fulfil their contract with the firm - but Vodafone cannot offer guarantees that they will their contract with their customers in north Norfolk.

Vodafone representatives are offering conflicting advice, with some asking customers to shell out more money for the equipment to help boost signals, while others are getting theirs free. They need to compensate all involved.
We are particularly concerned by the way Vodafone are treating some of those trying to leave their contracts early - with one local lady threatened with debt collectors and ending up in a small claims over the issue."
Cromer Music Evenings Review
Concert Held at Templewood, Northrepps, on Sunday 24th March Rosanna Ter-berg (Flute) and Leo Nicholson (Piano)
On a bitterly cold day many people came to listen to quality performances by Rosanna Ter-Berg and Leo Nicholson, playing music by Frank Martin, William Alwyn, Copeland, Poulenc, Debussy, Taktakishvili and Mike Mower.
Both artists have performed at many prestigious concert halls throughout the UK. Ter-Berg will be performing with the London Sinfonietta at the Proms this summer.
Leo Nicholson is a much sought after accompanist and is currently at Trinity as a faculty member working with singers and wind players.
The opening piece of the concert Ballade by Frank Martin, a prolific Swiss composer/pianist whose wife died whilst he was writing this piece, explained the deep emotion portrayed in the music, which was performed with intense and almost tangible sensitivity and respect for the composer’s intention.

After the interval, Debussy’s Six Epigraphes Antiques which he wrote to accompany spoken poems written by a friend - these were just six short works of the 12 originally written.
The highlight for me, of this concert, was Mike Mower’s Scree, from Sonata No 3. This intense and exciting work, I am sure, aroused all present, who had probably been lulled into a peaceful dimension by the soothing and sometimes haunting sounds of the flute. Here Mower’s composition in performance confirmed the extreme capabilities of the two artists who performed this most demanding work involving a truly modern progressive jazz idiom, in style, with its demands on the performers met with relish and ease.
On leaving Templewood I hope classical purists were prompted to reflect on their preferences after experiencing the writings of Mike Mower! Terry Keeler Cromer Times 419 April 13th 2013

ROTARY LEARNS MORE ABOUT WHIZ-KIDZ
Last month members of Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club were treated to an inspirational talk and presentation from Jessica Hiscocks, the East Anglian Fund-raising co-ordinator for the children’s charity Whiz-Kidz.
Whiz-Kidz was established some 25 years ago to provide disabled children with specially-adapted, powered wheel chairs and other mobility equipment to enable them to lead fun and active childhoods.
A prime example is that of Hannah Cockroft. She received her first sports wheel chair from Whiz-Kidz five years ago and, last year, went on to become a double Olympic gold medallist. This year she has become an official patron of the charity.
Grumpy Old Man
I suppose I shall be castigated for saying this but, for me, the fact that Comic Relief is finally over and television and radio programmes can, for a brief period, cease battering our collective consciences is the real relief. It may be heresy to say so, but I don’t think I am alone in being heartily sick and tired of the seemingly endless procession of habitual do-gooding events which increasingly dominate the annual round.
Each major event – Children in Need, Sport Relief, Comic Relief – expands its time, effort and scope each year (just like Christmas which kicks off in September) so that the periods of calm in between when the exhortations and hype die down, become steadily shorter. It has reached a stage when I refer to BBC 1 as ‘the charity channel’. What is more I have a feeling that it is a means of providing our taxpayer-funded state broadcaster with an easy way of filling schedules with the home-made antics of both public and celebrity participants, none of whom requires any fees because ‘it’s for charity, innit?’ Quite frankly it has become
Peter Stibbons, President of Cromer and Sheringham Rotary
Members heard that there are currently Club, is seem presenting a cheque to support Whiz-Kidz. around 70,000 disabled children and young people waiting for a type of wheel chair which would fit their particular lives. Through Whiz-Kidz’s fund raising initiatives many young people now have wheel chairs which enable them to do more activities – whether in the home, in the gym or on the sports field.
officially organised national begging with menaces on a massive scale : ‘Give us your bloomin’ wonga’ (or we will label you selfish, mean and heartless by default).
What sort of society have we become? Every organised event, for sport, entertainment or amusement now attracts people seeking sponsorship for a ‘worthy cause’ whilst taking part. This constant demand for our attention and our money has, I think, become excessive and instead of a warm feeling engendered by a natural impulse to help those less fortunate, we end up either beaten into submission or so hardened to it all that we just shut our senses to the continual blandishments and batten down the h atches over our natural
kind instincts in order to cope with the whole problem of charity overkill.
What, if anything, can be done to scale it back to a sensitive level? 'Editor's Note - we pride ourselves on being a community publication and as such we endeavour to allow all our readers the opportunity to express their views, regardless of our own personal opinions. Our Grumpy Old Man column has provoked quite a few readers' replies in its time and we feel that this particular article will be no exception - so if you would like to reply to him via our paper please do feel free to put pen to paper - I anticipate a full postbag!'

Prom Fashion Show
Teenagers from Cromer Academy put on a fashion show to remember to help raise funds for their forthcoming Prom.
The glamorous event was held in the academy’s Assembly Hall which was transformed into a glitzy catwalk for the occasion with guests receiving a non-alcoholic cocktail on arrival. The evening kicked off with a fast paced street dance routine performed by dancers from Marlene’s School of Dance based in Cromer.
SOS Radio Week 2013 Cheque Presentation
On the morning of Sunday 17 March members of the Bittern DX Group (amateur radio) involved with the GB5SLB SES, part of SOS Radio Week 2013 back in January returned to Sheringham Lifeboat Station to officially present them with the cheque. After a very quick ceremony BDXG Chairman Steve Balding G7VRK handed over £475 to David Hagan, Senior Helmsman of the lifeboat on the slipway.
Guests were able to view two ranges of clothes from Lily B Boutique in Cromer, modelled by students and a few brave members of staff.
The main event of the evening was the display of beautiful Prom dresses on show provided by Maisy May Wedding and Prom Dress Boutique in North Walsham. Just Beauty and Genesis Hair Salon, both based in Cromer worked tirelessly backstage with makeup and hair to make sure the girls were set for their moment in the spotlight. The girls were gracefully escorted down the catwalk by year 11 boys who were modelling their own array of tuxedos, with the show culminating in an upbeat grand finale parade.
The evening was a roaring success and it was great to see the community work together to produce such a dazzling event for the students of the academy.

They are already looking for prizes for 2014 should anyone be able to assist, please contact this event’s organiser Ken Holloway MØSHK via the group’s website www.bittern-dxers.org.uk or contact the Secretary for any further information of future events etc.

Evacuee Day at The Belfry Monday 25 March saw The Belfry C of E Primary School in Overstrand take a leap back in time. The children and adults were visited by Poppyline Education Team, led by Jenny Phillips, and experienced an Evacuee Day.
The action kicked off with a mock air raid and bomb explosion as the children, dressed and labelled as evacuees from Bethnall Green in London, lined up in the playground. A recording of enemy bombers and finally the all clear siren was played as the children crouched in the school hall. The event was organised as part of the school History Topic, Within Living Memory. Ten members of the Poppyline Education Team led activities including Dig for Victory, ARP Billeting and Rationing where the children made a lunch prepared by themselves using food similar to that available during WW2. With chocolate biscuits and crisps missing from their usual lunch the children started to understand how The Rocket House Cafe saw Becky Betts of Norfolk Radio’s Treasure food which is now taken for granted, was so different then. The children Hunt Show surprised by a singing flash mob on Easter Monday. learned about growing food and took home the beans and peas they planted in pots. Becky Betts was following her last set of clues for the programme, when
Treasure Hunt finds a Flash Mob in Cromer!
she was told that she had to sing before an audience before she could be given the next clue. Becky was at the busy Rocket House Cafe on Cromer’s sea front, when she was told she had to sing Do-Re-Mi from The Sound of Music.
Becky was worried that her singing would put customers off their coffee and scones, but was assured that all would be well. As she began to sing, customers joined in and soon more than twenty members of the Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society were in full voice. The Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society (CSODS) are putting on the musical, The Sound of Music at the Pavilion Theatre at the end of May. An emotional Becky was handed tissues as well as the next clue as the song ended. As she left to get to the final clue of the show, the members of CSODS went out to the radio car and sang, So Long, Farewell, as Becky drove off to complete the Treasure Hunt.
The Sound of Music will be at the Pavilion Theatre, Cromer from 25th May to 1st June. Tickets are available from the Pavilion Box Office. 01263 - 512495

The children also experienced being left to one side as their friends were chosen and joined a new family and themes were running in the classrooms which the children had asked to study including childhood, homes and re-housing and war torn Britain in the 1940s.
The busy and happy day ended with the school getting together in the hall to watch a black and white silent film and a good sing song from the first and second World Wars.

Norfolk County Council elections
- make sure you’re registered!
Norfolk County Council elections are coming on 2 May and North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is urging all residents to make sure they are entitled to vote.
Every four years 84 councillors are elected from across the whole county of Norfolk to make decisions about county-wide services. North Norfolk has 11 councillors, representing the county electoral divisions of Cromer, Fakenham, Holt, Hoveton and Stalham, Melton Constable, Mundesley, North Walsham East, North Walsham West and Erpingham, Sheringham, South Smallburgh and Wells.
Local elections are an important part of the democratic process, which is why NNDC wants to remind everyone to think about their vote ahead of the election. People who are not yet registered to vote or who have recently moved need to send in their application to be added to the register at their current address as soon as possible. To be eligible to vote at these elections the last date for receiving applications is Wednesday 17 April. The deadline for applying for a postal vote or amending or cancelling an existing one is 5pm on 17 April. Proxy applications can be accepted up to 5pm on Wednesday 24 April.
For more information about these elections please visit http://www.northnorfolk.org/council/5008.asp Alternatively contact North Norfolk District Council’s Electoral Services team on 01263 516046 or 516317.
Maria Ball has done the right thing – Norman Lamb
Maria Ball, Chair of the East of England Ambulance Trust, has resigned with immediate effect. The announcement comes after the Trust was found to be failing to meet key standards on the care and welfare of people who use the service, during a recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission.
There have been long-running complaints and concerns about ambulance waiting times in rural parts of the county. The CQC report praised frontline staff but highlighted slow response times to emergency calls and a “significant inequity of service between rural and urban areas. It is the first time an ambulance trust anywhere in the country has been found to be failing on this measure.
Norman Lamb, MP for North Norfolk, has been pursuing this issue relentlessly for more than a year and has met with the Trust several times since October 2011. He was promised action plans and improvements, but these promises were not delivered.
Commenting, Norman Lamb said “I believe that Maria Ball has done the right thing. The performance of the Trust has caused enormous concern in Norfolk. It’s essential now that we get strong leadership to turn this Trust around and to ensure that local people have a service that they can rely on.

Dear people of Antingham, Bacton, Gimingham, Knapton, Mundesley, Northrepps, Overstrand, Paston, Sidestrand, Swafield, Trimingham and Trunch, and surrounding areas
I am writing this letter to all of you, just to let you know that I am standing as a Labour candidate for the forthcoming County Council elections. I am doing this, to give people who would normally vote Labour, or would like to change their voting habits, the opportunity to use their Democratic right to do so.
My name is Elizabeth Cornwall, better known as Liz. I have lived in North Walsham for the past 20 years, with my husband Tom. I am no stranger to local politics, as I have served 8 years on Town and District councils and served 2 years as Town Mayor. I am very passionate about giving 100% of myself to a job, and if I fail, I let you know why.
Unlike most candidates I am not delivering leaflets, or canvassing, because my views are well known to most. Representing the electorate, means just that to me, irrespective of your political views. I am giving you the opportunity for change. It will be up to you if you wish that change.
Should you wish to contact me, you can do so, by telephoning 01692 406477, or by email at lizcornwall@btinternet.com, and I will get back to you.

Briston’s Musical Multi-Handiman!
Despite the cold weather, the Briston Organ Show last month was still a well-attended affair, with a warm audience thrilling to the superb playing of top keyboard artist Jon Smith, who had travelled down in atrocious weather all the way from Sheffield!
Using a Yamaha Tyros keyboard and a Wersi performer organ, he gave us two hours of solid top quality live music - at times even playing both instruments at the same time, as well as singing!
His programme included the ever popular 'Forgotten Dreams', but uniquely played as a waltz(!), the bouncy 'Come Follow The Band' from Barnum, some stunning vocals with 'The Nearness of You' and 'S'Wonderful', toetappers like 'Save The Last Dance For Me' and 'Black Is Black', and for organ enthusiasts we got a good selection of bouncy 'Blackpool' numbers played in true Wurlitzer style! His gentle humour filled in the gaps between items, and the audience all roared for an encore as the evening came to a close.
MC Mick Leary told the audience that the show had raised £120 for the Copeman Centre Funds, and nearly £60 for the Air Ambulance, so the evening was a good result for everyone.
There are about eight organ shows in Briston each year - the next is on Friday 10 May, when top UK organist Steve Hubble will be at the Copeman Centre for the first time.
Tickets are just £6, with under 16s getting in for just £3. Advance booking is always essential, and you can reserve your tickets now by telephoning Carol on 01263 860844.
Perhaps we might see you there as well next time!

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
When cats come into care they experience a completely different environment to that which they have been used to. Some join us from homes where they have received lots of loving care, others have been badly treated by their owners and some have been living outside for some time. Although they will be treated with kindness and affection, receive regular meals and have any problems/conditions attended to they are confined to an area much smaller that what they are used to. Some settle into their new accommodation straight away while others will take time to accept the changes in their lives. Timid cats usually benefit from having somewhere to hide and provision is made for them to do so. Some others react by hissing and growling and we find the best policy is to ignore the cats, get on with the feeding and cleaning and they will soon come round. We find it is best for the cat to settle at its own pace and this always works, given time.
The same applies but in reverse when a cat leaves us with its new family. They are leaving us to take up residence in a far larger space with lots of new noises and sometimes new companions (feline or otherwise). This is particularly true when applied to kittens who may been with us since birth. Sometimes a cat will arrive at its new home and react as if it

has always been there but this is the exception rather than the rule. We usually suggest the cat is confined to one or two rooms to begin with, their food dishes and litter trays placed in quiet corners (but not together) and allowed to get used to their new home gradually. Some cats may hide and Stephanie gets calls from worried new owners when this happens. She advises them that it is best to let them come out when they feel comfortable to do so and just give them time. We cannot emphasise enough how important it is not to worry if your new cat is not immediately a lap cat but that with time and patience they will settle and be the cat you were looking for. If you acknowledge this fact the transition period will be so much easier for your family and the cat.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving a call on the above number.

The students really pulled together to ensure all the events taking place were well supported and raised lots of money for the local charities. Mrs Clements is still collecting sponsorship for her headshave, if you would like to donate you can do so by dropping off your donation into the office. The total raised so far over the 3 days is £1,186.32!

North Norfolk beach huts and chalets – get 50% off weekly hire
Having a base by the sea makes spending time at the beach so much easier, whether you use it to store beach essentials, as a place to get changed after a dip, or just want to shelter with a flask and a book from bracing breezes. And North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is giving local residents and visitors the opportunity to enjoy a seaside beach hut or chalet at half price from early April to the end of June this year.
Saffron Insurance makes a splash in Cromer
Saffron Insurance Services, a long established Insurance broker, has opened an office in Bond Street, Cromer. Doors opened on the 2nd of April for customers to receive first class insurance advice from Will Howett, the manager of the new branch.
Will has been a local insurance broker for many years and now joins the team at Saffron Insurance, which gives him access to a great product range with back up from Saffron’s very experienced commercial and personal insurance experts.
Subject to availability, this very special offer applies to weekly lets of beach huts in Mundesley, Sheringham and Cromer from 6 April to 29 June. Prices normally start at £45 per week, so some lucky people will be able to enjoy a hut or chalet for a week on one of north Norfolk’s fabulous beaches for less than £23, making it just over £3 a day, for up to a maximum of three weeks!
NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Corporate Assets, Rhodri Oliver, said, “Our fabulous resort beaches are always busy and we rarely have enough beach huts or chalets available to satisfy demand in the main summer holiday period. But earlier and later in the year we usually have a few vacancies. This year we thought it would be better to make them available at a lower price, so that they could all be used and enjoyed by more people. I hope lots of people will be able to take up this very special offer.”

David Beswick, managing director of Saffron Insurance said, “I’m delighted that Will wanted to join Saffron. I like his attitude to helping the local community which is a value that we follow throughout our branches in Essex, Suffolk, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire.” David also added “ We want Will to continue what he’s doing – to stay focused on the needs of Cromer and the surrounding area”.
Will Howett said, “It was time for a change and I like the way Saffron do business, they’re not corporate – they’re community. They are very well respected by insurers and have access to great products and prices. This will be very good for my customers as we can make sure that they get excellent value for money, service and cover.”
Saffron can assist all businesses, from a local retailer to a large manufacturer, and from self-employed tradesman to building contractor.
Home and motor customers will be well looked after too, from modest flats to listed buildings with a classic tucked away in the garage.

CELEBRITIES STEP BEHIND THE CAMERA
National Trust recruits famous faces to encourage the country to share favourite places. Celebrities are used to life in front of the lens but this spring stars from the world of sport, film and TV are taking a turn behind the camera. Actors Kim Cattrall, Sienna Guillory and Jude Law, chefs The Fabulous Baker Brothers and England rugby ace Austin Healey are among those who have shared photographs of the places that mean the most to them as part of a nationwide initiative by the National Trust to celebrate the importance of ‘special places’ in people’s lives. The campaign follows research undertaken by the charity which found that 84 per cent of Brits have a favourite place they go to which positively affects their wellbeing and happiness. Photographs by the celebrities are being showcased on a new app created by the National Trust to encourage people to share their favourite place and why it means so much to them. The app will also feature places that are important to National Trust staff and volunteers and members of the public. Included on the app are well-known names such as Nell McAndrew with photographs of Ham House in London, whilst Kim Cattrall shares memories of Blickling Estate in Norfolk, describing it as a perfect day when she visited with family. To explore the National Trust places and find or discover new special places log onto www.nationaltrust.org.uk. The nation can also register their special place and tell everyone why they love it at www.facebook.com/nationaltrust and #specialplaces
Award-winning American Choir to visit Gresham’s
Award-winning choir Longmeadow Lyrics from Longmeadow High School, Springfield, Massachusetts will visit Gresham’s on Tuesday 16 April, to perform alongside the School’s Schola Cantorum in the Chapel. The 49-strong SATB American Choir, who in 2011 won The American Prize for Choral Music at High School level, is coming to the School as part of an extensive UK and European Tour. They contacted the School having discovered Benjamin Britten was an Old Greshamian and wanted to sing at the School he had attended as a young teenager. The choirs will sing individually and together in a mixed programme of accompanied and a cappella English and American music and include Britten’s Hymn to the Virgin, a choral piece Britten wrote whilst a pupil at Gresham’s in 1930. This concert forms part of the Gresham’s Britten Arts Festival which celebrates the centenary of this great composer. Details of all concerts and events can be found on www.greshams.com/britten100 or in the souvenir brochure on sale at the concert. Tickets for the concert which is open to the general public starts at 7.30pm on Tuesday 16 April in the School Chapel, are £5 from the Auden box office on 01263 713444 or on the door.

CEREMONIES AT NORTH LODGE We are liaising with the Registrars to arrange ‘Duo’ ceremonies. This provides the opportunity (weather permitting) to hold part of the ceremony outside in the walled garden overlooking the sea. The legal part of the ceremony must still take place in the Chamber inside North Lodge which is licensed for ceremonies. There is also now very limited availability for ceremonies to be held at 7pm. Please also see our Facebook page Weddings in Cromer for more photographs of our venue. Further details are available from the Town Council office.
CHRISTMAS EVENTS 2013 We know it is early to be thinking about Christmas but plans are already underway for the 2013 Christmas Market. Anyone interested in having a stall is asked to contact the Town Clerk for further information.

Changes to Legal Aid
By Neale Grearson, Partner and Collaborative Lawyer at Hayes + Storr
From April 2013 there will be major changes in the public funding of legal costs for family work. The availability of legal aid has reduced over recent years with less people being financially eligible and the number of firms of solicitors offering legal aid reducing. The further cut backs will mean that from April 2013 legal aid as we have known it will no longer be available.
Until now those people financially eligible had been entitled to advice from a solicitor on such things as divorce and separation to include financial disputes and arrangements for their children on a relationship breakdown. From April 2013 only those cases involving domestic violence will legal aid be granted for. This will leave a large group of people that had previously been able to receive legal aid not receiving this. The situation has been deteriorating with the number of firms offering legal aid reducing so that it has been very difficult for even those financially eligible to find a local solicitor able to offer them legal aid. From now on very few people will qualify for legal aid.
The government has stated it is committed to individuals finding alternative ways of resolving disputes rather than the courts being involved. Mediation will continue to be funded under the legal aid system that remains and individuals are being encouraged to take
more responsibility for their lives and the repercussions of a separation. Collaborative law and other methods of avoiding court involvement will become even more important. Collaborative law is one of the methods of individuals keeping control of the situation and in a more common sense way meeting and reaching decisions rather than these being imposed by a Judge.
The courts are expecting an influx of people representing themselves without solicitors because they cannot afford to have solicitor act for them. This could cause a meltdown in the court system which is already under pressure from its own financial cutbacks. Relationship breakdown can be a very emotional time and if people are representing themselves they do not have the same objectivity and professionalism that a solicitor will bring to negotiations or any court proceedings. The courts and Judges are therefore expecting considerable problems. The role of solicitors will be even more important especially in situations where both parties to a divorce are not represented. Collaborative law and mediation as means of keeping control of the process and reducing the legal costs involved will be increasingly popular. Alternative methods of funding legal costs will also become more common such as children asking their parents or other relatives to assist them.
The government’s view is that in a situation where there are limited resources funds cannot be made available for legal aid to cover an individuals divorce. This competes with the provision of other public services such as hospitals or schools. However, the knock on effect is that many people experiencing the most difficult period of their lives may find themselves without legal advice and making decisions that will have massive long term effects on their lives. Not taking legal advice is a big decision that someone could regret for a long time as you only get “one bite of the cherry” in dealing with the repercussions of a separation or a divorce.
“This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. Cromer Marrams bowls Club
league will mean that the players will have to be on top form if they are once again going to win the League. Bernie Crow our man of many tasks has relinquished the Captaincy of the ‘Crows’ and last years President Kay Hazelwood has stepped in to take charge. Roger Purser our Men’s Bowls Secretary multitasks as Captain of the afternoon NANSA League team and he too will hope that the team that won the League last season, and achieved promotion, can compete just as well in the Division above. That afternoon league proved very popular last season and clearly it was a good decision on the part of the club to enter the league. I have to say that the afternoon games do make up for the loss of some of the friendly games, which are reducing year on year. It does seem that the cost of travelling, the age of players and unfortunately the continuing loss of bowlers to clubs in both County and Country is having its impact on these games. Club captain John Porthouse will be looking however to have as successful a season as possible with the games that have been arranged with visiting clubs. Federation League starts on Tuesday 30th April, Hansells League on Wednesday 1st May and the afternoon NANSA League shortly after.
Tales from the Bowling Green ...
Looking back 12 months I was commenting on a very mild winter and a potential hosepipe ban. How things can change in a year! The Cromer Marrams green will open this year on Saturday 20 April and as usual members will be arriving to pay their fees, fill in competition forms and even if the weather improves hoping to get out on the green to have their first ‘roll up’ of the season. I am pleased that this year Sue Ealden of the Cromer Marrams Club is the Norfolk County Women’s President. I am sure that ladies from the club will be supporting her in County Friendly games throughout the county. The club will also be hosting a Presidential game in September between Sue’s Norfolk ladies and a team selected and captained by the Norfolk Men’s President, Peter Cottee. This year Mick Weddup is our Club President and he is looking forward to an enjoyable and successful season for all the club. David Ealden continues to manage the finances and Roger Greef has taken over the reins as Club Secretary. Graham Hall continues as our Captain for the Wednesday evening Hansells League and John Andreae continues with his magic touch to lead the well named ’Crabs’ team on Tuesday evenings in the Federation County League. A change of teams in the
As I say every year, even if you are not a member please feel free to come along and see us from opening days onwards. You never know, we may be able to talk you into Overstrand Evening WI visiting the following We welcomed Jacqui Palmer from the Henry Blogg Museum in Cromer to our March meeting. Jacquie talked about the great man, Henry Blogg, who is the most highly decorated RNLI crew member ever. Jacqui gave members an insight into his bravery by relating the rescue which took place in heavy gales in December 1933. Following attending a distress call from further down the coast, lifeboat HF Bailey was called back to Cromer where the Sepoy was in dire trouble. The old rowing lifeboat Alexandra had been launched but under such extreme conditions was unable to help. This was a particularly courageous rescue where, in a determined manoeuvre Henry Blogg put the HF Bailey over the deck, first rescuing the Mate returning to save the Captain. Jacqui’s description was accompanied with photos taken from the beach, showing the launching of the Alexandra and the desperate situation of the Sepoy, with both Captain and Mate clinging to the barge’s rigging.
week and having a try on the green yourself or simply join us as a social member. Remember “Don’t say no before you have had a go”.
Dress code for the morning “roll ups” is ‘casual’ other than the required flat soled shoes. We have some shoes and bowls available for use at the club if, you want to join us and have a go.
During the winter season the club regular quiz nights have continued but unfortunately one or two evenings have been curtailed due to the weather. However John Blackburn is looking forward to his quiz final shortly and I am sure that a tightly fought competition with take place. John has also looked after the regular short short mat afternoon sessions. That is not a typing error. The clubhouse is not large enough to take full sized short mat – if that makes sense - but successful afternoons have taken place on our much reduced version of the game. Edna Bunkle and Frank Thwaites have also produced many brain teasing questions during the winter and with a few social night thrown in it has been good to see club members keeping in touch with each other during this very cold period. It was very pleasing recently to be invited to Suffield Park Bowls Club to take part in a social evening with them where games of darts were the main part of the evening followed by a buffet.
I know why they invited us to play darts as Cromer Marrams only seemed to win about two games all evening! I think that next winter maybe they will be invited for a return match playing bowls on our short short mat. Peter Bird, 01263 512120

He’s found his way to the quiet backwater of Cromer from the hustle, bustle and bright lights of Norwich, which of course means he uses some big words from time to time, but we usually just understand what he’s saying and I have to say that he does make the most incredible sticky toffee pudding.
The season is upon us after a long, cold winter and the Grove is already very busy. The house itself always seems to enjoy being full with people and I do hope you get the chance to come up and see us for lunch, dinner, the best Sunday roast in North Norfolk, or to look round our brand new Orchard Rooms, five guest bedrooms set in the grounds which are already proving a massive hit.
In the meantime, enjoy David’s Sticky Toffee Puddin’, and I look forward to seeing you soon.
INGREDIENTS
The Puddin’ 200g dates, stoned and chopped 250ml black tea (not too strong) ½ tsp. bicarbonate of soda 85g soft, unsalted butter 175g self-raising flour 1 tsp. mixed spice 175g soft demerrara sugar 2 eggs (beaten) 1 orange (zested) 150g chopped walnuts
The sauce 100g dark muscavado sugar 100g unsalted butter 140ml double cream
METHOD
Heat the oven to 180c
Boil the dates and tea in a saucepan to soften the dates, stir in bicarbonate of soda and set aside
Beat together the sugar and butter until pale and creamy, and then fold in the egg, flour, mixed, orange zest and chopped walnuts.
Add the dates and tea.
Mix and pour into a buttered tin and bake for 30-35 mins until the top is firm to the touch.
For the sauce: melt the butter on a low heat, add the sugar and boil until well the sugar is dissolved, then lastly add the cream.
North Norfolk Supporter Group Success Dogs for the Disabled North Norfolk Supporter Group raised nearly £2,000 in 2012 in a variety of fundraising efforts including supermarket collections, giving talks to schools and community groups, running charity stands at local events and managing collection tins in local businesses.
All members of the North Norfolk Supporter Group would like to thank everyone involved, from those who donated to volunteers who gave up their time to help and attend events. Stephanie Lawless, Community Fundraising Manager at Dogs for the Disabled’s Banbury headquarters, said “We’re delighted and would like to thank the group for their hard work raising these desperately needed funds and for helping to spread the word about the charity’s work. Nationwide our Supporter Groups raised a grand total of £106,000.”
Dogs for the Disabled has trained over 630 Assistance Dogs to date and currently has 12 Cromer Times 419 April 13th 2013
more than 275 working in England and Wales. It costs £12,000 to fund a dog from birth to fully trained Assistance Dog and nearly £20,000 to fund the dog for its working life.
There are 180 Assistance Dogs working in partnership with adults with disability and 56 working with children with a disability.
Dogs for the Disabled was the first charity to train an Autism Assistance Dog and there are currently 40 working with a family with a child with autism.
It costs nearly £3 million pounds a year to run Dogs for the Disabled and the vital
services it provides. The charity receives no government funding and relies entirely on donations, fundraising and volunteers to continue its pioneering work - 77p from every £1 raised or donated goes directly to support its work. With over 2000 enquiries each year there are many more people the charity could help.
If you would be interested in getting involved, or would simply like to hear more about what the group get up to, then please feel free to get in touch. Email: community@dogsforthedisabled.org or call 01295 252600.

U13 Boys’ Hockey team come second in Nationals
The Under 13 Boys’ Hockey team at Gresham’s Prep School in Holt have had a very successful season. Firstly, they qualified for the National Schools finals by coming runners-up in the East Schools round of the National Hockey Tournament at Redbridge in March. In addition, at the IAPS (Independent Association of Prep Schools) East qualifying Pictured: U13 Boys’ Hockey team with Simon Mantell tournament, the Under 13 team (hockey player for Great Britain) competed against 20 other schools and went on to qualify as one of only four teams to compete at the IAPS National Finals at Millfield, which took place on Thursday 14 March. The team played some very tough matches, but delivered a high standard of hockey and progressed to the final, where they lost to Chafyn Grove on the ‘golden goal’ rule and so became the runners up in the IAPS Nationals.
Mark Buckingham, Head of Hockey at the Prep School, said “This is a fantastic result for the team and I am really proud of all the hard work they have put in to make the National IAPS finals!"
