CROMER CRICKET CLUB v LASHINGS WORLD XI ‘Mammoth Day for the Club’ The new cricket season is under way and Cromer Cricket Club is gearing up for the biggest match in its history when the Club entertains The Lashings World XI at its Norton Warnes Ground on Overstrand Road Cromer on Sunday 11 August.

The Lashings World XI are a team of former International cricketers who want to give something back to the “grass roots” of their sport and they play a number of matches around the country to raise money for local clubs and charities. This will be the first time they have ever played a match in Norfolk let alone Cromer, so it will be a mammoth day for the club.

Lashings have just announced their squad for 2013 and they will be captained by former England player Phil De Freitas.

Martin Braybrook said “This will be a tremendously exciting day. To have players of this calibre actually playing at Cromer is something we wouldn’t have thought possible. We are especially grateful to Bakers and Larners and Crayford and Abbs whose generous sponsorship has helped make the match possible. All we need is for the sun to shine and the public to turn out in their hundreds to support us.

Guiding Leaders Needed

Girlguiding UK is the largest female organisation for girls in the UK. The Rainbow, Brownie and Guide units in Briston, Cromer and Sheringham are looking for adults to help on a regular basis at their weekly meetings, ideally wishing to train to be a Leader/assistant leader.

We are looking for people willing to get involved with Guiding locally, to help run unit meetings / take on the running of one of the units. Unit helpers do as the name suggests, assist at all levels during the meetings, a leader/ assistant leader is the one who will deliver the meeting with the help and support of her team - crafts, adventures, discoveries, games and life skills, aimed age appropriate.

This is not as daunting as it sounds. You are allocated a mentor, the training is similar to an NVQ, requiring observations and evidence gathering and there are many resources to help you on your way. There is always someone who has the solutions!

A lack of adult leaders threatens the long term viability of some of the individual units.

Do you think you would like to get involved?

Below is a selection of statements, all true, to give you a taste of what guiding is all about.

Working in a team is much easier than working alone.

There is no such thing as failure, only a change in plans, so always be flexible.

No song is to silly to sing and nobody sings off key.

You are never too old to try new things.

There is no such thing as junk, only future craft supplies. A girl’s smile is worth a thousand words.

If a Guider can’t do it, nobody can. This is a selection from a list of 27 statements about Guiding.

You need a good sense of humour, the ability to turn a disaster into a success, a positive outlook, the ability to encourage, support and praise young people, keep some modicum of control but not make it feel like school. You also need to be able to do / think of several things at once, as a leader you are always in demand and the girls expect you to

It’s a beautiful day in the middle of May, Not a cloud in the bright blue sky, I’m sitting on a little stone bridge Watching the trout swim by. I have a packed lunch with me No need to walk back home, Sometimes I think it’s really Great to be out on my own.

How lovely are the buttercups, This field has a golden glow, I must remember to pick a few Before I have to go. Cromer Times 421 May 11th 2013

LifeBuoy Paintings by Cromer Academy

The Art, Design and Technology department at Cromer Academy was approached by the Cromer RNLI to produce two lifebuoy paintings. These lifebuoys will be part of the Cromer and Sheringham Crab and Lobster Festival 2013 and feature in the Art Trail representing the RNLI and what an important job they do on our coastline.

The recent RAG week, held to raise money for the RNLI, was the perfect platform to promote this artistic opportunity to students and a group of Year 8 pupils were invited to work on the paintings during that week. The students did a wonderful job on the paintings before they were weather proofed and set inside the

Rotary Welcomes New Member

Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club has welcomed its first new member this year. He is Sheringham businessman, Andrew Parish.

Andrew (61), moved to Sheringham in 2007 to establish ‘The Sun Deck’ bed and breakfast business in Holway Road. Prior to this he spent 20 years as Sales Manager with car dealerships around Norwich before setting up ‘Clutterbugs’, a specialist cleaning business in 2006. He now combines this with the bed and breakfast operation.

The latter quickly gained a Visit Britain 4-Star rating and recently achieved the Enjoy England Breakfast Award for high quality breakfasts. It was also awarded a ‘Runner-Up’ certificate in the hotels and guesthouses category at Sheringham in Bloom 2012.

Married to Sheila, Andrew has two daughters – Jennifer (29) and Abigail (13) a pupil at Sheringham High and a member of the popular band, Jefferson’s Mandolins. In what little spare time he has, Andrew sits on the local police ‘SNAPS’ committee and is looking forward to involvement in the local community with Rotary.

Cromer & Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival Opening Concert - Tickets now on sale Friday 17 May 2013, 7.30pm Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre

The Crab & Lobster Festival returns for the fourth year with another Opening Concert to kick off the Festival weekend. This is a show for everyone who enjoys the seaside tradition of Sea Shanties, folk and irresistible humour. The ever-popular Olly Day returns to host the Concert which features music by the renowned Sheirngham Shantymen, internationallyrespected singer John Conolly and comedy by Nigel ‘Boy’ Sayer.

Local sea shanty group The Sheringham Shantymen have, over 20 years, developed

their own style of performing songs of the sea and as well as hundreds of local performances the group has entertained at prestigious Maritime Festivals at Bristol, Southampton and Portsmouth Festival of the Sea.

John Conolly has based his style firmly in the folk tradition. His finely-crafted songs are performed with warmth, good humour and lilting accompaniments on guitar and melodeon. Many of John’s songs have a tang of the sea, inherited from his upbringing on the east coast of England.

Olly Day is firmly established as one of East Anglia’s finest performers. His unique style combines an irresistible sense of humour, lots of Magic and an impressive singing voice. Olly

has just completed his fourth year on stage at Cromer with the Christmas Seaside Special, to rave reviews from both the press and public alike.

Nigel ‘Boy’ Slater is a natural comedian, using daft poetry, hilarious stories and his uncanny ability for acting the fool on stage to get a laugh. His 'country boy' style of presentation adds an extra twist to his performance that has his audience in stitches.

Tickets are only £5. Book Early to avoid disappointment! 01263 512495 The Festival continues on the Saturday.

The Great Operatic Bake Off!

Over £700 was raised last month by the Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society, by selling dozens of freshly baked cakes, made by members of the Society. The fund raising event was held at the Community Centre in Garden Street Cromer. They also had craft stalls, a bric-a-brac stall, a tombola stall and served light refreshments. Mr Andrew Grey, who works for Barclays Bank, has asked Barclays to match the amount raised, and they have agreed, to a maximum of £750.

Many of the cast and crew were involved including Jack Jarvis 9, from Saxthorpe, and Callum Adkins, 13, from Aylsham. Both boys took to the streets wearing sandwich boards advertising the cake sale and the show, The Sound of Music, in which Jack plays the part of Kurt von Trapp and Callum plays Friedrich von Trapp.

The Society Treasurer, Mr Peter Howell, who is also the director for the forthcoming production of The Sound of Music said that the amount raised was tremendous, and that the effort was magnificent.

Society Chairman, Mr Andrew Payne, congratulated all those who were involved and said that they did a fantastic job. The Sound of Music is on at the Pavilion Theatre, Cromer from 26th May to 1st June. Tickets are available from the Box Office: 01263 512495

Callum Lodge, aged 4, of Mill Lane, Cromer, who REALLY liked the cakes!

CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY

The summer of 2012 may have been a washout for many gardeners but for lovers of wild orchids it was a roaring success. Our guest, Simon Harrap, told us that nearly 2000 were seen near Blakeney in what was the best year for orchids in living memory. Some orchids are very rare. The ghost orchid did not flower in Britain between 1987 and 2009 and the Lady’s Slipper orchid can be found at only two sites in the UK. At the other end of the scale is the Common Spotted orchid, 12000 of which were seen in one acre of land near Holt.

All wild orchids have an enlarged lower petal which acts as a landing platform for the insects that are needed for pollination. Many have adaptations to help with pollination. The Lesser Butterfly orchid has white flowers to attract night flying insects especially moths. Some like the Fragrant orchid give insects a nectar reward while the Early Spider orchid gives off a pheromone very similar to that of female bees in order to attract male bees. Those that rely on pollination by bees are not doing too well at the moment while the self pollinating varieties are flourishing.

Some orchids have a very limited range. The Lapland Marsh orchid is found only in Western Scotland and the Hebridean orchid only on North Uist. Others prefer a particular environment. The Creeping Lady’s Tresses orchid thrives near pine trees and there are many in North Norfolk, especially in the Holkham area. Another orchid to be seen locally is the Autumn Lady’s Tresses orchid which is to be found in the grounds of Gresham’s School. As you can see orchids have been given some very unusual names and little imagination is needed to see how the Military, Monkey, Lizard and Naked Man orchids got their names!!

The society is holding a plant sale at the Community Hall in Cromer on the morning of Friday 31 May. Do pop in and have a look if you are passing by.

CROMER FLOWER CLUB

Penny Stone came to us in April and her title was ‘Flowers in your hair’. Penny was a trainee hairdresser in the 60s and her arrangements centres around her memories of this time. She used some wonderful flowers to interpret her designs including orchids, roses and lilies.

Our competition ‘Easter Bonnet’ was judged by Penny and her comments were much appreciated. Jenny Pawson was best in show.

Our next meeting is on Monday 20 May at Cromer Junior School at 7.30pm with Alan Smith whose title will be ‘Let me entertain you’. Visitors are always welcome.

The Grove Opens New Rooms

One of Cromer’s oldest family firms is looking forward to the summer season with optimism.

The Grove on Overstrand Road hit the headlines in 2012 with the launch of a restaurant complimenting the ten bedroom Georgian summer home, and last winter saw yet more expansion – this time new accommodation nestled in the four acres of woodland grounds.

The Orchard Rooms are five timberframed, custom built guest rooms built on what was part of the Grove’s vegetable garden and framed by a small copse of trees. They were designed by Rob McVicar of A2 Architects in Norwich, built by Norfolk Post and Beam and ND Willan and encompassed a whole range of local Cromer businesses in their outfitting and finishing.

Partner Richard Graveling is delighted with the results. “We’d been looking at increasing room capacity for some time but at the same time were reluctant to extend the house itself which could have dramatically altered the setting. We also get lots of enquiries for ground-floor accommodation, and these new rooms are all suitable for people unable to manage stairs. We’re lucky enough to have decent-sized grounds and there was a perfect spot at the end of the garden in which to build.

“The timber-framed design was put in place deliberately to keep the build time down and make sure we were open for Easter, and Norfolk Post and Beam did a great job. I must say they look absolutely wonderful and we are extremely pleased and proud of them.

“Several Cromer firms contributed to the end result - for example All-Tile provided the flooring and Postles took care of all our electrical goods - and it just goes to show that the town has plenty of great companies offering high-quality services, added Richard. “We have a superb relationship with many local firms and it’s been a real pleasure to work with them on this project.

The Grove has also freshened up their management team to oversee what is sure to be a busy summer season. Harriet Blake is heading up the restaurant operation alongside head chef Gary Parrett - the summer menu launched on May 1st - and Carolyn Millman is looking after the front desk.

The interiors of the new rooms were designed by Richard’s wife Jo and reflect varieties of English orchard fruit – Merryweather (damson), Gladstone and Honey Pippin (apple), Sunburst (cherry) and Victoria (plum).

SUNLINE GETS SEALS’ APPROVAL

little green around the gills... The lifeboat house has not housed a lifeboat since 1922 and has a very interesting history - if you haven't been to Blakeney, maybe now is the time as the reserve is not just known for its seal colony, it has several

Usually you would expect to see seals at Blakeney point but on Wednesday 17th April there was an addition to the Point by way of two fitters from Sunline Curtains and Blinds. The National Trust had pproached Sunline for blinds for their recently renovated property at Blakeney point and of course Sunline rose to the challenge.

The lifeboat house on Blakeney point stands approximately three and a half miles along a shingle spit and was built in 1898, replacing a smaller building from the 1850s. The National Trust acquired Blakeney point 101 years ago, becoming the first nature reserve in Norfolk.

To celebrate the Centenary last year, The National Trust initiated a major refurbishment programme, which was completed last month, the blinds being the finishing touch.

Mr Duffill managed to keep on dry land for the measuring side of the job as he was transported by Land Rover along the shingle spit to the lifeboat house but due to the conservation area and the breeding birds on this route it could not be used for the final stage of the job. So the fitters, blinds and all their tools had to make their way by boat to complete the job. Mr Duffill said “After 32 years of business this has to be a first for us to travel to a job by boat”.

National and International conservation designations and is renowned for the breeding Tern colonies as well as other important species of flora and fauna.

Last word to one of the fitters, who was heard to say, "It certainly has been a different experience for us today - we just hoped we had remembered all the equipment we needed otherwise it would have been a long swim back for one of us!"

All the blinds and tools had to be wrapped in plastic to protect them from any water spray and as you can see in the photos the fitters also had to be well prepared for the sea trip. As Sunline prepared to leave, the English weather had been kind and the trip over to Blakeney point was a pleasurable one taking in the beautiful surroundings and looking out for seals. On the return journey however the wind had picked up and the fitters got a little wet from the sea spray and I have to say looked a Cromer Times 421 May 11th 2013

Rich Chocolate Torte

from head chef at The Grove - Gary Parrett

Since the runaway success of last month’s Proper Sticky Toffee Puddin’ my chef de partie David Chattenton has been pestering me to let him write up another recipe for you, and after he promised to mop the floors every night for six weeks I couldn’t really say no. Apparently he’s being approached in the streets for autographs and there is a book deal around the corner, and as I stand to pick up 50% of the profits as an agency fee I think I should encourage him wherever possible…

This rich chocolate torte is a demanding recipe but extremely worthwhile – it broke the hearts of many of our Valentine’s Day guests a while back and will be featuring throughout the season on our table d’hôte.

The summer à la carte is now in full operation and it’s great to see so many happy diners enjoying their food with us. Don’t forget we’re privileged to be hosting the marquee lunch and tea when Cromer CC entertain the world-famous Lashings Cricket Club on 11th August – tickets are still available so visit www.cromercricketclub.com to reserve yours! I look forward to seeing you soon. Gary Parrett

RICH CHOCOLATE TORTE

For the chocolate sponge base 225g plain flour 350g caster sugar 85g cocoa powder 1 ½ tsp baking powder 1 ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda 2 free-range eggs 250ml milk 125ml vegetable oil 2 tsp vanilla extract 250ml boiling water

1. Preheat the oven to 180c/350f/gas mark 4. Grease and line a 40cm tin.

2. Place all of the cake ingredients except the boiling water into a large mixing bowl. Using a wooden spoon or electric whisk beat the mixture until smooth and combined.

3. Add the boiling water to the mixture a little at a time until smooth – the mix will be very liquid but that’s no problem.

4. Pour the mix into the prepared tin and bake in the oven for 25 – 35 minutes until the top is firm to the touch and a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean.

5. Set aside to cool.

For the torte 250g dark chocolate (70%) 2 tbsp golden syrup 570ml double cream 4 tsp instant coffee granules 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp mint extract

1. Break the choclate into small pieces into a large heatproof bowl. Spoon in the syrup and pour in ¼ of the cream. Stand the bowl over (not in) a pan of hot water over the lowest possible heat and leave until the choclate has melted. Remove the bowl from the pan and stir to combine, then leave until barely warm.

2. Pour the rest of the cream into a very large bowl and tip in the coffee, mint extract and cinnamon. Whip the cream until it’s a milkshake consistency.

3. Fold the two mixes together with a large metal spoon in a figure of eight movement.

4. Pour the torte mix onto the sponge and put in the fridge for one hour.

We had a gentleman in for dinner at the weekend who asked for a spoonful of raspberry sorbet with his torte – it worked so well that we are sending all our tortes out with raspberry sorbet now!

In this area of the country we generally carry out the following searches but other searches may be needed depending on where you are buying:-

Local Search

The Local Search reveals any Local Government Charges affecting the property. There many Local Government Charges but the main ones include Planning Charges, Conservation Areas, Listed Buildings and certain Renovation Grants. It also tells the Solicitors where the nearest public highway is. This enables your Solicitor to check that there are appropriate rights of access to the property. The Local Search will also often reveal planning permissions affecting the property since 1974 and the most recent Building Regulation Completion Certificates.

Drainage Search

The Drainage Search confirms whether the

CROMER WI

property is on mains drainage and mains water supply. It provides details as to where the nearest mains run. It also confirms whether the property is charged on a metered basis for water use.

Chancel Repair Search

The purpose of a Chancel Repair Search is to find out whether the property comes with a potential liability to maintain the local Church. This search is required by many Mortgage Lenders and at present is generally to be recommended.

Commons Registry Search

The Commons Registry Search confirms that none of the property is Common Land. As well as having to be open and often subject to grazing rights Commons should not be built on. This search is recommended for most properties in a rural area or close to a village green or common.

Environmental Search

The Environmental Search looks at the previous uses of the properties and reveals whether any of those uses are likely to have

We started our meeting with a talk “Eighty Years Young and Still Beautiful”. It was given by Laura Duncan from the Fitness League. She told us about the league which was formally called The Woman’s League of Health and Beauty. It was started by Mary Bogot Stack in 1930 and when she died it was taken over by her daughter Prunella. Laura told us about her training as a Fitness Instructor and then along with the help of her daughter, Bethany, gave us a demonstration of some of the exercises which our members joined in with. We continued with the meeting and welcomed four visitors. Glenice Knight gave a comprehensive report on the Federation AGM in St. Andrew’s Hall, Norwich which some of our members went to on 26 March. The highlight was a funny and interesting talk by David Whiteley of Look East fame. Our lifebuoy for the Crab and Lobster festival is almost ready and will be on display in the garden of our artist, Cheryl Tait, 14 Louden Road, Cromer, from the middle of April. We have got outings arranged to go to the Van Dal shoe factory in Norwich, Kings Lynn for the day, the theatre at Aldeburgh and to see Evita at the Theatre Royal. New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2.30pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street.

led to contamination or pollution of the land. It also confirms whether the property is within the flood plain area. This search is generally to be recommended.

Plan Search

The Plan Search comes in a variety of different forms and can advise whether Planning Permissions have been granted in the area, local crime figures, schools etc. “This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.”

If you require advice on this matter please contact the Conveyancing team at our Sheringham office on 01263 825959. If you require advice on any other legal matter telephone our Sheringham office on 01263 825959 or email law@hayes-storr.com

DO YOU KNOW YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE?

‘Know your blood pressure’ is one on the recent slogans of the Stroke Association and last month Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club together with many other Rotary Clubs across the country, cooperated with the Association to organise a ‘Know Your Blood Pressure Day’. Almost 100 members of the public stepped into Cromer’s Community Centre (WI Hall) to take advantage of the service – 57% more than the last time a few years ago.

Surprisingly, 43% were recommended to have a routine follow-up test within a month because of moderately raised blood pressure and 7% were urged to have a follow-up within a week – three due to low blood pressure and four due to severe hypertension.

“The results demonstrate the value of routine blood pressure testing”, said Rotarian Donald Mayes, a retired pharmacist formerly with Lloyds who organised the day. “Hopefully, we have been able to a number of people identify warning signs at an early stage.”

Dear Margaret

May I, through your paper, issue a plea to everyone to please support our 1940s dance to be held at The Red Lion in Cromer on 15 June from 7.30pm – 11.45pm at £15 per person. This is a charity dance to raise important funds for the Veterans Return Fund 2014.

We will make it a memorable evening keeping it 1940s throughout – light refreshments 1940s style (as there is a war on, you know!), music by DJ UXB 40s and 40s singer Sean Andrew is not to be missed. Please book your tickets now to avoid disappointment. We have veterans local to Cromer attending the dance – let’s make this an evening for them to remember. There will be a raffle and 1940s dress would be a big bonus if possible, if not smart dress.

Tickets available from Kathryn Smith on 07903 693905 Yours sincerely Kathryn Smith

I refer to your recent report on the meeting called by Norman Lamb about the need for more voluntary community car schemes. It highlighted the lack in Cromer and Sheringham and the surrounding area.

North Norfolk Community Transport has in fact recently started this service but with only 2 voluntary drivers at the moment is looking for more in order to be able to provide for a greater number of people needing to get to the hospitals or their local surgery. This is a much needed and greatly appreciated service so if you have any readers who would be interested in driving (expenses are paid), they should phone 01263 839009. The same number applies for those who want to book transport to their medical appointments. Missing from the list of established voluntary schemes was that which has been operated for several years by NNCT in the North Walsham, Mundesley, Stalham and adjacent areas. This scheme also can always use more drivers, as the numbers using the service in the last year has doubled. Both potential users and new drivers should phone 01692 500840. Yours sincerely Mollie Whitworth

We were pleased to welcome Jackie Stuart to talk to members and visitors about the experiences of American airmen in Norfolk in the Second World War.

Jackie has just written a book based on her interviews with many former airmen who have returned to the county to visit the places where they were based during the war. Up to 3000 personnel of the 8th Army Air Force were based in 70 airfields in Norfolk in the war, many of them very young and away from home for the first time. They had to fly 25 missions before eligible for leave and this rose to 35 after D-Day. All of the airmen were given a “Guide to Great Britain” to help them Cromer Times 421 May 11th 2013

cope with their new surroundings but this did not prevent problems from arising. Our system of pounds, shillings and pence caused confusion to the extent that many airmen did not bother picking up their small change in shops and pubs because it was such a nuisance. The fact that US servicemen were paid over three times more than those from Britain may have been a factor also! Food was mainly imported from the USA and this helped to compensate for the very basic conditions that the men faced in the nissen huts on the bases. Language, of course, was also an issue at times. American expectations of the Norfolk Broads was much different from our own!!

This was the last in our season of talks for a while but they will be resuming in September.

Top Tips for keeping your property safe:

• Always keep your back door locked when answering your front door, so no-one can enter your property without your consent

• Use a spy hole, chain or window to look at any caller you don’t recognise. Not sure? Don’t open the door

• Display a No Cold Calling sticker on your door, you can get one of these for free from your local Safer Neighbourhood Team

• Always ask for ID – take it from the caller through the letterbox and read it carefully

• Check the caller is genuine by telephoning their company using the number in the phone book. The Gas Board and the Water Board no longer exist

Advice

• Use an accredited trader to carry out work at your home. Try the Norfolk Trusted Trader Scheme run by Norfolk Trading Standards

• Don’t agree to any work or sign anything on the spot. Don’t be pressured into having work carried out.

• Never pay cash up front and don’t ever go to the bank or cash point with a trader

• Discuss any work you feel needs doing with a relative or friend who can help you find a reputable trader

• Call 999 if you think a rogue trader is at your property.

to learn about how the railways influenced the growth of the suburbs, and about the technologies involved in the design of locomotives and carriages specifically for suburban commuting.

North Norfolk Railway already operates a substantial education programme involving local schools. This project will add significantly to its existing geography, history and science elements, and will also give volunteers the chance to experience the two extremes of preservation: hands-on restoration and the anagement of a major scheme.

The project includes the restoration of two carriages introduced for suburban travel. These will complement vehicles already on the railway and allow visitors to travel on three generations of suburban trains dating from the ’20s to the ’60s.

North Norfolk Railway chairman Clive Morris said: “We are thrilled to have received the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, and are confident that the project will further the public’s understanding of a vital aspect of everyday life for millions.”

Car Park fire damages Signal Box

On Monday 21st April, a fire believed to have started in a parked car in the Station car park, damaged at least two other vehicles as well as the 106 year old signal box. At the end of last year the box had been moved ready for refurbishment, which had begun only a few days previously.

No-one was hurt in the incident, which included the carpenter who was working on the other side of the box.

North Norfolk Railway’s General Manager Trevor Eady commented, “I am relieved that there were no injuries from the incident. It appears that the damage to the signal box is superficial and not structural. On the side facing the car park we had already done some of the restoration work, but we will as always overcome the problem and continue with the work.

This has not damaged any other railway property apart from the fence, which has already been repaired. The NNR will continue as normal, with no interruption to one of North Norfolk’s busiest attractions.”

Cromer Marrams bowls Club

During the first week that the club was open the weather was kind to all those who decided to have their first roll ups. The wind was a bit fresh at times but sun was good to see. Richard was having problems with his back but we all hope that it will be soon sorted. It was noted that the first wrong bias of the season was delivered by Dougie closely followed by Erpingham Dennis. The opening spoon drive was quite well supported and the winner was Brian Beaumont with Roger Greef as Runner Up. Ann Matthews received the wooden spoon. That was the day that two shivering people were seen approaching the club house. It was soon realised that they were our Portuguese exiles John and Chrissie arriving nice and early this year. On the social side Edna finished her quiz season with drinks and chocolates all round. It was noted that all the fun sized mars bars were missing, but I think Tom was the culprit. In addition on opening day Treasurer David was revealed as being
