Steve’s Got Talent

Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent

A host of loyal excited fans thronged Cromer Pier on Friday 31st May hoping to get their photograph taken with ventriloquist Steve Hewlett who is competing in this years Britain's Got Talent The very talented and popular ventriloquist did not disappoint, inviting fans up onto the stage of the Pavilion Theatre to have their picture taken along with Arthur Lager Steve's cheeky and very forthright puppet. As always Arthur stole the lime light saying of Steve "He wouldn't have a job if I was not around". Steve said he was looking forward to performing in the semi final in front of judges Simon Cowell, David Walliams, Alesha Dixon and Amanda Holden and says no matter what happens in the competition Cromer and the Pavilion Theatre will always be one of his favourite places to perform. Steve was placed 'in the top three' of last weekend's show. Shadow act 'Attraction' won the outright place in the final based on public vote, leaving the judges to decide between Steve and singer Jordan O'Keefe for the second place in this Saturday's final - judges votes were even so it was down to the public vote to decide. Unfortunately this went in favour of the young singer, leaving Steve in third place. But all may not be lost - there is one last chance of a place in this weekend's final by wild card who will the judges choose as their wild card? Good luck Steve. 4 Course Sunday Lunch ffro rom only £19.95 pp

Cromer Library News

Reading Well - books on Prescription This new scheme launches during early June and provides self-help books based support for adults experiencing mild to moderate mental health conditions. GPs and health practitioners will be able to prescribe books to patients from the approved list – although the books will be available to anyone to borrow.

Coming soon… Creepy House Summer reading Challenge - there's a spine-tingling adventure waiting for children when they take part in the 2013 Summer Reading Challenge – Creepy House. They can join the adventure at any Norfolk library during the summer holidays. Pick up a pack and explore the Creepy house, discover its secrets and meet some of the hair-raising residents! Read six books and collect stickers that reveal the creepy residents of the house. All children who read six or more books will be presented with a medal and certificate to celebrate their achievement. Look out too for the Mungler Top Trumps cards to collect and swap with family and friends. Children can choose any books they like: fact books, stories, joke books or picture books. Audio books and e-books count as well, so long as they borrow them from a library. Are Norfolk’s children brave enough to explore The Awful Upstairs, The Gruesome Ground Floor and The Spine-tingling Cellar? Look out for more details in the library soon, including special Creepy House themed events.

Mount Snowdon Climb for Alzheimers

On 23 June Victoria Craske, who works at Hair Couture in Cromer, will be climbing Mount Snowdon to raise money for the Alzheimer's society. With Victoria that day will be Barry Foulser, Sandra Foulser, Nathan Foulser and Jennifer Armstrong ‘and a big bag of jelly babies!’

Victoria explains ‘After doing the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge last year, I wanted to carry on with my fund raising efforts and Snowdon seemed the next likeliest challenge on my list of many I would like to do in the future. Snowdon is 3,560ft above sea level and I am hoping the weather will be on my side that day and I get to see some amazing views’.

She continues ‘I am raising money for the Alzheimers Society because it is a cause very close to my heart as my wonderful Nana, Iris Smith, suffers from this horrible illness. Since last October she has been in a residential care home which specialises in the care of elderly

Beetroot pappadelle, Blakeney mussels, basil and pinenut pesto cream sauce, rocket and parmesan

The sun has come out and our sous chef, Ally Streatfield, has come up with a great pasta recipe that I’m sure will feature on our specials boards all summer. The scullery has been festooned with gorgeous spinach and beetroot pasta hanging to dry, which is a great sight and very much enjoyed by the owner’s children. However it wasn’t enjoyed quite as much by their grandfather, who has been hunting around for his garden twine which had been ‘requisitioned’ by Ally to drape his pasta over...

We’ve hit the summer season with a bang – full houses over both Bank Holiday weekends and the pleasant surprise of an AA Gold Award and Dinner Award last week. We’re lucky enough to have a great staff and it’s a reflection of all their hard work and dedication. And to celebrate we’re putting on a summer-long lunch deal – groups of four get one meal completely free. So get your nearest and dearest along to see us for lunch this summer – 01263 512412 to book! bEETROOT PASTA 9oz pasta flour / strong white bread flour 6 egg yolks One cooked beetroot (pureed) Tbsp olive oil Tbsp celery salt

Place the flour and all the other ingredients into a blender until it’s of a nice doughy consistency. Roll out with a pasta machine and cut into 2cm ribbons.

MUSSELS 200g Blakeney mussels ½ white onion 1 clove garlic Cup white wine 250ml double cream 1 tbsp pesto (see below)

Heat up a pan and the finely diced onion, then the garlic. Place in the mussels, add ½ cup of white wine, the tbsp of pesto and double cream (250ml will be enough). Cook until the mussels open. At the same time, boil the dried pappadelle then add to the mussels in the pan. Serve with toasted foccacia and top with some lovely fresh rocket and a little bit more parmesan.

PESTO 1 bunch of green basil 100g toasted pinenuts

1 clove of garlic 200ml olive oil 100g parmesan

Blend the basil, add the garlic and parmesan, blend a little more then add the rest of the oil and flavour.

Armed Forces Day Cromer

Saturday 29 June 2013 10am – 4.30pm Free Admission Community Hall, Garden Street Cromer

All are welcome to this, our fourth commemoration of Armed Forces Day, which gives us an opportunity to do two things. Firstly to raise public awareness of the contribution made to our country by those who serve and have served in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces. Secondly, it gives the nation an opportunity to show its support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community, no matter where they are serving in the world.

There will be representatives from many ex service organisations including The Royal Naval Association, REME, RAF and local branches of the Royal British Legion and Women’s section RBL. We hope to have locally serving army and RAF personnel with us and Army cadets and ATC.

There will be displays of army uniforms and equipment through the ages together with a large parade of antique Britain’s lead soldiers, portraying the pre 1914 full dress uniform of the army. We also hope to have a military vehicle or two outside the hall and relics from the Great War on display.

Refreshments at minimum cost will be provided by the Women’s section RBL Cromer.

A local school are participating in designing a poster for Armed Forces Day and the winners will be announced at the opening ceremony.

The exhibition will open at 9.30am and close about 4.30pm. All are welcome!

Woodgate Nursery Garden Show raises £647.96 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance

Over 3000 visitors were treated to a wonderful weekend of gardening inspiration at the recent Woodgate Nursery Garden Show. From Chelsea Flower Show inspired garden designs and willow weaving demonstrations to birds of prey displays and a children’s treasure hunt there was something for everyone. Mrs Joice from Hoe said " We come along to the show every year and just love the show gardens and talking to the garden designers. We think it’s wonderful because we can find solutions to all of our gardening needs in one place and we also love coming to Purdy’s Tea Room, their cakes and lunches are just delicious”.

The winner of this year’s best show garden,

shelter with some of the design team getting into character and dressing up as land girls. KJ Myhill Building and Gardening Services came second with his courtyard garden featuring a hand built pergola and water feature. Erin Flock won top prize in the competition and will be receiving £75 worth of garden vouchers to spend at Woodgate Nursery.

Keep Trade Local and get to know your North Norfolk businesses!

01263 513 814

The Federation of Small Businesses is holding an event at Fakenham racecourse on June 20 for you to see the small businesses that exist in North Norfolk and what they have to offer.

Nine out of ten businesses in the UK employ less than fifty people, with small firms often providing services and creating fantastic products from their homes or a small office space. Unlike large firms, who often have advertising budgets and shop fronts to attract customers, small businesses can be reliant on word of mouth.

Cromer has a number of small businesses, from fishing to footwear that help make the town a great place to be, but there may be businesses across North Norfolk that you aren’t yet aware of, and could be supporting. The event in Fakenham aims to show the benefits to using a local business, and we have exhibitors from photography to preserves in attendance.

For every pound that is spent with a Cromer firm around 70p stays in the local economy, compared to a maximum of 30p if you choose a national business. Local firms know their community and will often be involved in supporting groups within it, as well as providing employment for local people.

Show your Business, at Fakenham Race Course, will be a great opportunity to see what small firms can offer, and discover a small business that you might never know existed. If we don’t use our independent and high quality firms, we are in danger of losing them and North Norfolk losing its quaint and unique charm.

The Prince of Wales stand will be open from 2pm until 6pm. www.fsb.org.uk/eastanglia If you are a business interested in taking a stand, please visit www.showyourbusiness.eventbrite.com

Aylsham Country Market extends its hours

If you're going off to work early on a Friday morning, from 7 June you will have the opportunity to pop into Aylsham' Country Market before you go. The Market has had a tradition of opening at 8.50am but in response to customer feedback, in the future it will be opening its doors at 8.30. Market Manager Debra Kidd explains, "Customers have told

12

us that if they need to be in work in the town by 9am, it's not always possible to get to the Market for the 8.50 opening time. The Market is a cooperative, so we asked our members if they were prepared to be there 20 minutes earlier and I'm happy to say that they all agreed".

Aylsham Country Market sells homemade cakes, savouries and cookies alongside craft

items, plants, vegetables and eggs. The wide range of goods is ideal for stocking up for the weekend, or simply picking up a snack on the way to work. For those who enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle, there is also a café which sells bacon butties, cakes, sausage rolls and of course tea, coffee and hot chocolate. The Market and its café are open every Friday morning from 8.30am to noon.

Grumpy Old Man

When I was a boy, a visit from the doctor was an important event. On each occasion I was routinely and carefully examined. A general appraisal of my appearance and colour, whilst I sat mutely with a thermometer stuck uncomfortable under my tongue, preceded observation of the state of my ears, eyes, tongue and throat with a little torch and a wooden spatula employed with close analytical attention – ‘say aaah …’

My pulse was taken, my back sounded with rhythmic taps of his fingers. Out from the black medical bag came the stethoscope and I sat fascinated as Doctor dabbed the business end around my thorax and abdomen, his eyes unfocussed and non-committal, murmurs of uh-huh, ah-ha, hm-hm accompanied his aural exploration of my inner workings. All this took about ten minutes.

A rash or a pattern of spots usually produced a quick and certain diagnosis, particularly so if some of my pals were similarly afflicted, but the examination routine was never skimped or skipped. My mother was instructed regarding my care and a prescription issued on the spot. This was before the advent of the NHS, so there was always anxious but careful consideration before sending for the doctor because his fee was settled by the patient, so the call for his services was never casual or frivolous and his care and attention earned

his living. Back then doctors were almost exclusively male and generally were held in very high esteem in the community and accorded great respect and deference.

When the NHS was established, the ethics of the profession and its relationship with the community carried on habitually, much as before, except poorer people were relieved of the anxiety of bills for medical attention which previously they could not afford.

The system was still essentially local run on traditional lines and worked pretty well as complaints were rarely heard.

telephone are now the first response to the ill or wounded. General practitioners work office hours from grander premises and don’t turn out to visit the sick if they can avoid it.

Fast forward to today and the NHS is in a pickle. Political interference over decades with more centralisation and diktats from a burgeoning bureaucracy has gradually crushed the medical profession into a cynical conformity in which the computer and the

CROMER MUSIC EVENINGS Review of concert held on 26 May at Templewood, Northrepps Huw Wiggin (Saxophone) and Tim Abel (Piano)

Cromer Music Evenings presented two very accomplished performers for the last concert of the 2012/13 series, who have performed extensively in the UK and overseas, both graduating from prestigious music colleges and both having performed concerts at sea on Cunard and P&O ships all over the world, including Cunard’s famous Ocean Liner Queen Mary 2.

The chosen programme proved to be a delight and seemed to be prepared to introduce composers, apart from Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin, who were probably unknown to most of the audience. This proved to be very successful as the response to each

piece was glorious appreciation in applause.

The well known work Czardas by Vittorio Monti opened the programme, followed by Oblivion, Fugata and Libertango by Astor Piazolla. Then West Side Story Suite by Leonard Bernstein (arr A Brinsford), followed by Scaramouche by Darius Milhaud (the French Composer with whom the great Dave Brubeck studied).

George Gershwin’s Three Preludes (arr by the Russian Shapashnikova) was the first item after the interval - here the 2nd of three was in blues style, slow moving and beautifully phrased with the breath control and tone of the soprano

saxophone so profoundly awe inspiring. The last piece on the programme was The Devil’s Rag by Jean Matitia - here the rapport between the two extremely talented performers was a joy to behold - absolutely brilliant in fact.

To augment the programme, Tim Abel played two piano solos, GriegsWedding Day at Troldhaugen and Death Ray Boogie, the latter bringing spontaneous euphoria to all in the Music Room at Templewood. Huw Wiggin’s performance of Bernstein’s "There’s a place for us" played with such sensitivity, I am sure stirred emotions with the beautiful tone, dynamic gradations and spell binding long note values which were perfect in intonation, even in the pianissimo passages a master class in breath control indeed.

The place to be today was Templewood, without doubt! Terry Keelerr

SEE THE MONSTERS THAT OUSTED STEAM

During the 1960s, steam locomotives were swept away as British Railways’ Modernisation Plan introduced hundreds of diesel locomotives. Love them or loathe them, diesels transformed our railways, and their contribution to railway history is being celebrated by the Poppy Line at a Diesel Gala, which runs from Friday June 14 to Sunday June 16. The Gala is sponsored by diesel enthusiast magazine Railways Illustrated.

Star of the show will be the huge “Peak” class no.45133. The “Peaks” were built over 50 years ago for the Midland main line, and feature a massive 264 litre, 2,500bhp marine-type engine. Top speed was 90mph. Enthusiasts are looking forward to the sound of this mighty engine as it climbs the 1-in-80 gradient from Weybourne to Holt!

The event will see a bigger range of diesel engines than ever before on the Poppy Line. A diesel shunter will be giving brake van rides. And if all the activity raises a thirst, there’s a beer tent at Sheringham Station and some on-train refreshment.

Fish ‘n’ chips will be on offer on the Friday and Saturday – when trains after 6.00pm will be at reduced fares, and the fish ‘n’ chips will be free!

Gala Rover tickets give unlimited travel all day on any train, and cost just £16 adult, £15 senior citizen and £8 child 5-15. Under 5s go free.

Have you noticed the difference at the National Trust in June - Sheringham Park National Trust? Quirky signs encourage people to enjoy the outdoors...

Visitors to National Trust places in Norfolk will be forgiven for doing a double-take as they read signs telling them Keep on the Grass, Please Do Touch and RESERVED: for fun and games.

The colourful signs, which at first glance look like warnings or instructions, are part of a fun campaign by the Trust to encourage people to enjoy the natural world all around them. The conservation charity also wants to challenge out-dated misconceptions that it is all about rules or is a bit stuffy. It aims to make it easier for families in particular to feel comfortable exploring the great outdoors by breaking down perceived barriers or restrictions. Ben Cowell, the National Trust’s Regional Director for the East of England, said “The National Trust cares for some truly special natural places, such as woodlands, heaths, parks, beaches, gardens, fields and nature reserves. All of these places come to life in May and June, with bluebells, buttercups, rhododendrons and roses in bloom, while some of our most colourful wildlife, such as songbirds and butterflies, start to make an appearance. “We know from research that some people still view us as being very formal with lots of rules and regulations. I would encourage those people to come along and see how we have changed over the years. We are experts at conservation of our built and natural heritage but we also make sure that we offer enjoyment and access to history, wildlife and outdoor experiences too. We think these new signs are a fun, tongue-in-cheek way to help people reconnect with nature and enjoy our outdoor places to the full.

The signs show messages like:

• ATTENTION! You will need this to spot the abundance of wildlife in this area • QUIET PLEASE – and take time to hear the birdsong • PHOTOGRAPHS taken from this spot look fantastic • PLEASE DO SIT HERE – it’s such a lovely spot

Call for entries for North Norfolk Environment Awards

Schools, small businesses, local community and voluntary groups in North Norfolk are being invited to enter one of the district’s most prestigious environmental awards.

North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) ‘John Sweeney Award for the Environment’ is now open for entries from local organisations who have been involved in environmental projects in the district. Any organisation that has worked to cut their own or others’ impact on the environment, or been involved in projects that have protected or enhanced the local or global environment is invited to submit an entry before the deadline of Friday 21 June.

01263 515545

The awards are now in their 19th year, and continuing last year’s format the winner of the John Sweeney Award will be presented with a prize of £500 and a commemorative plaque, with all shortlisted entrants receiving a certificate.

Last year’s joint winners were a low-carbon new-build scout hut in Mundesley and a local environmental education programme based at Holt Hall. Details of all past winners and runners-up and a copy of the entry form (also available by post from NNDC) can be found on the North Norfolk District Council website www.northnorfolk.org/environment/215.asp.

Entrants are assessed on how they have made a contribution to the environment, for instance by reducing their environmental impact, improving natural spaces or raising environmental awareness, and judging of all shortlisted entries will be carried out by a small panel in July. The awards will be presented at a ceremony during NNDC’s major environmental event of the year, Greenbuild, at Felbrigg Hall in September.

Anyone interested in entering or who would like to nominate an organisation in their area, should email sustainability@north-norfolk.gov.uk or call 01263 516331.

Call for entries for the Graham Allen Award

Renovation projects and new buildings that sensitively capture the distinctive character of our local architecture could be in line for a prestigious award from North Norfolk District Council (NNDC).

Entries are now being sought for this year’s Graham Allen Award, the annual NNDC award for excellence in conservation and design.

The closing date for entries is 30 June, 2013 and the award will be announced in September.

Inaugurated in 1982 as a memorial to the late GS Allen, the first Chairman of NNDC, the Graham Allen Award recognises the scheme which makes the biggest contribution to North Norfolk’s unique built heritage.

During the lifetime of the awards, a diverse range of projects have been recognised for their excellence, ranging from the new cloisters and refectory building at the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham to the innovative contemporary design of Curve House at Edgefield, and last year’s winner, The Gunton Arms, Thorpe Market.

For more information, or an entry form, please visit www.northnorfolk.org/planning/12799.asp or contact Paul Rhymes tel: 01263 516367, email: paul.rhymes@north-norfolk.gov.uk

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We recently had a young cat of about eight months old handed into our care which was a stray and obviously quite poorly. First priority was to get her to the vets immediately to discover what the problem was and to commence treatment. It was apparent to the vet that Millie was having great difficulty breathing and an x-ray quickly identified the problem. This poor little cat had either been in a road traffic accident or been kicked and had a punctured lung due to damaged ribs. The vet had reservations as to her chances of surviving and prescribed steroids and antibiotics to give her the best chance possible. It was then down to her fosterer to provide lots of loving care and ensure she was kept calm and quiet to help her recover. It is now a month since Millie came into care and she is so much better. She will be gradually taken off the medication and we are hoping that, providing another x-ray indicates her lung continues to mend, she will be fit and well enough to be neutered in a few weeks.

At our recent Plant Sale in North Walsham we raised nearly ÂŁ600 for the cats in care. We thank everyone who supported us either by providing plants or coming to the sale. The winner of our Raffle was Mrs. Jenny Bates from Little Melton. Plans are now being finalised for the Hog Roast on Sunday 23rd June which will once again take place at Stephanie’s home in Dilham. Tickets, still only ÂŁ10 each, are now available by contacting the “cat phoneâ€?. Why not come and join us? We usually have a good time including those fined by the dreaded “Car Park Attendantâ€?.

We recently had a call from someone whose cat kept going missing. She was upset as she had discovered that a neighbour was feeding her cat and encouraging it to go into her home although she had asked her politely not to. This is unfair on the owner and on the cat and it should not be encouraged to stay unless with the owner’s agreement. It could

Meet Benson ‌ A Muddled "Tail"

Described as white and black or black and white, a big, strong boy who is sometimes afraid of his own shadow, can run really fast but spends most of his time in bed not moving, aged 4 years (28 in human terms) but is a big baby, or should I say puppy, loves making his own bed in his kennel but hates going into the kennel after a walk.

This is Benson, a very handsome greyhound waiting for a home in Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinder's kennels. Benson's bed, like himself, is always in a muddle, he had a great racing career without ever quite reaching the heights but above all he absolutely adores people and loves to play, be cuddled, stroked, fussed, groomed, hugged and talked to.

He is a muddled character but will make a lovely, loyal pet for someone.

YOUNG OPERA SINGERS IN GALA CONCERT

On Saturday 6 July The Auden Theatre, Holt will resound to the fabulous sound of the combined forces of Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society and Norfolk Symphony Orchestra.

This feast of choral and orchestral music will celebrate 80 years of music-making by the local choral society. Under the sparkling baton of musical director, Nathan Waring, this performance will also celebrate the centenary of the birth of composer Benjamin Britten in a unique way. As well as performing his beautiful Te Deum in C and Jubilate Deo the choir will perform Gounod’s magnificent, yet rarely performed, Messe Solennelle de Sainte-Cecile as a personal tribute to Britten who was born on St Cecilia’s Day in 1913. St Cecilia is the patron saint of musicians. And, all very fittingly, this concert will take place in the Auden Theatre at Gresham’s where Britten himself attended school.

The soloists are three young opera singers, two with the Royal Opera House Covent Garden (Emma Smith soprano; Gavin Horsley bass) and one with Glyndebourne (William Knight tenor).

Another feature of the programme will be Saint-Saens fabulous Symphony 3. Known as the “Organ” symphony followers of the Babe movies may recognise the theme tune! For this extravagant performance, Nathan Waring will hand over his baton to Lawrence Tao, assistant musical director, and take to the keyboard on an organ which will be moved into the theatre especially for the occasion.

The orchestra will also perform Vaughan Williams English Folk Song Suite – most suitable for what should be a very English summer evening which will include an extended interval so that the audience and musicians can enjoy an extended interval and picnic on the lawns outside the theatre. A wine bar will be available.

A similar picnic concert in 2012 proved highly popular with a capacity audience and this year’s event is expected to do the same.

Tickets available from the Auden Theatre Box Office 01263 713444 priced £15 (£12 concessions – students and OAPs – under 18s FREE) Published by: Bob Cumber 0126

NEW Members Needed Sheringham & Cromer Fantasy & Sci-fi Club is currently looking for new members.

Chairman Damian Hagarty explains ‘we are currently looking for new members from the Cromer and Sheringham area to come to a weekly club meeting to discuss all things sci-fi and fantasy. We are also looking for key members to help out with the running of the club and give up their free time to get things running’.

Club members will dress up in costumes and parade in the Cromer and Sheringham carnivals and this year their theme is ‘Fifty Years of Doctor Who’.

‘We are also raising awareness of Nor-Con which is the largest sci-fi convention in Norfolk, held every year by the Norwich sci-fi club and which we support. In time we will be raising money for charity and doing our own events and get a reputation for being professional and consistent at what we do’.

The club’s website is scfsfc.moonfruit.com or find the club on Facebook by searching for The Sheringham & Cromer Fantasy & Sci-fi Club. Alternatively email the club at scfsfc@hotmail.co.uk

Matters to Consider when Buying a Property By Stephanie Connor, Solicitor with Hayes + Storr When buying a property, particularly if you are a first time buyer, there are many matters you should consider.

One issue is the costs involved in buying a property. The largest expense when buying a residential property is usually the Stamp Duty Land Tax which is normally payable if the property you are buying is worth more than £125,000. It is important to budget for all the expenses you will incur during your purchase. They include legal fees, a Land Registry fee and search fees with the local authority, water company and others.

If you plan to renovate or extend a property you should check to see if it is a listed building or in a conservation area, as this will affect what you are allowed to do. You might need to apply for planning permission or listed building consent before beginning work. In addition, you may also need to apply for building regulations approval - your Solicitor

or the local Council will be able to give you more information.

There can also sometimes be restrictions in the title deeds to a property requiring consent from a third party before an extension or conservatory is added. It is important to find out if this applies to your property, and this is normally explained during the conveyancing process.

When buying a flat it is important to check how many years are left on the lease. Most mortgage lenders require a minimum of the mortgage term plus 25 years, and sometimes longer than that. Your seller may need to arrange for the lease to be extended if there are not enough years left.

If you want to renovate a flat, there may be restrictions in the lease limiting what you can do with your property, such as preventing you from knocking down any internal walls. Your Solicitor will be able to advise you on this in more detail.

Buying a property is, for most people, the most expensive purchase they will make. It is worthwhile investigating your options carefully before proceeding.

CROMER FLOWER CLUB

Alan Smith demonstrated at our last meeting and his title was ‘Let me entertain you’ – and he entertain us he certainly did, with his usual flair and funny anecdotes, so typical of Alan. His flowers and foliage were all seasonal and his designs pleasing. All of Alan’s arrangements were raffled much to the delight of the ladies present.

being sought for the 2013 tree. Please send your suggestions to the Town Clerk.

CHRISTMAS EVENTS 2013

The Christmas Tree Festival and Nativity Festival will run from Wednesday 4th to Saturday 7th December 2013. Organisations wishing to display a tree or nativity are asked to contact the Town Clerk for further information.

The Christmas Market will be held on Saturday 7th December 2013 with charity stalls in the church and trade stalls in the Parish Hall. Anyone wishing to book a stall is asked to contact the Town Clerk.

The Christmas Lights Switch On event will be at 4.30pm on Saturday 7th December 2013. Further details will be available nearer the time. A competition will be held to design a poster for the Christmas Celebrations. Details to follow in due course.

CEREMONIES AT NORTH LODGE

We are liaising with the Registrars to arrange ‘Duo’ ceremonies. This provides the opportunity (weather permitting) to hold part of the ceremony outside in the walled garden overlooking the sea. The legal part of the ceremony must still take place in the Chamber inside North Lodge which is licensed for ceremonies. There is also now very limited availability for ceremonies to be held at 7pm.

Please also see our Facebook page Weddings in Cromer for more photographs of our venue. Further details are available from the Town Council office. Alan also judged our competition entitled ‘Musical’ with constructive helpful remarks.

Best in Show was Joan Matthews.

Our next meeting will be on Monday 17 June at 7.30pm at Cromer Junior School when Terri Potter will present ‘Floral Pastiche’. Visitors are always welcome.

I return to a subject touched on briefly in a previous message concerning vehicle security at beauty spot car parks.

This is a seasonal crime which we start to see an increase of when the good weather appears and people start parking their cars in rural beauty spots.

Always think twice about what you really need to take with you if you are parking somewhere remote, and never leave anything in your car. Even if you think it’s well hidden, thieves know where to look.

If you see someone paying attention to vehicles within car parks or acting suspiciously then please record the vehicle registration number or description and call us on 101.

Four of the Best for North Norfolk’s Award Winning Beaches

Buckets and spades, ice-creams on the prom and award-winning beaches, North Norfolk’s seaside resorts are some of the best in the country – and that’s official.

Keep Britain Tidy announced last month that North Norfolk has four award-winning resort beaches, offering visitors great facilities, a litter free and safe environment and, in the case of Blue Flag awards, meeting the highest international water quality requirements.

Flying the flag for North Norfolk’s seaside resorts in 2013 are Cromer, Sheringham and Sea Palling. All three are continuing the standard of excellence that was recognised with the awards of Blue Flag status last year. And this year East Runton beach has been

awarded the new Seaside Award, recognising its high standards of beach management.

Cllr John Lee, Cabinet Member for Environmental, Leisure and Cultural Services, said, “We are delighted that three of North Norfolk’s Blue Flag resort beaches have retained their awards this year and that East Runton has achieved the new Seaside Award. This, following the excellent comments we received in the Good Beach Guide earlier this year, confirms the district as a wonderfully clean, tidy and safe place to live and to visit, with some of the best seaside resorts anywhere.”

Five North Norfolk beaches, these four plus Mundesley beach, were recently awarded the

Qualified Cabinet maker with over 25 Years experience North Norfolk Business Centre, Northrepps. NR27 9RQ

highly sought after ‘Recommended’ status in the Marine Conservation Society’s ‘Good Beach Guide’, which demands stringent water quality standards.

To qualify for a prestigious Blue Flag resort beaches must achieve a high standard of bathing water quality, something that’s regularly monitored. But that’s not all. They must also show high standards of environmental education and information, such as clear signs and beach-related activities and events; environmental management, such as clean and accessible toilets and beaches, with regular beach cleans; and safety – bathers at all NNDC Blue Flag beaches are protected by RNLI Lifeguards.

New General Manager for Cromer Pier

Openwide Coastal Ltd is delighted to announce the appointment of Rebecca Wass to the role of General Manager of Comer Pier and Pavilion Theatre.

Rebecca joins Openwide Coastal to lead the growth of Seaside Special and all the Pier’s trading operations into new markets and comes with a wealth of experience in the local area and throughout communities in Norfolk. With a solid background in theatre management with Live Nation at both the Beck Theatre and Sunderland Empire, Rebecca has also gained experience within the museum and attractions industries and is well placed to optimise all elements of the unique and exceptional attraction of Cromer Pier. Openwide Coastal manage the Pier and Pavilion theatre on behalf of North Norfolk District Council and produce the UK’s oldest and most successful full summer season variety show, Seaside Special, now in its 36th year and still performing to over 45,000 people every summer. 26

John Lee, North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said, “The Pier and Pavilion Theatre are important not only for Cromer but for the whole of the north Norfolk coast. They are iconic attractions, providing enjoyment and entertainment for tens of thousands of local residents and visitors alike, throughout the year. The council looks forward to continuing its excellent relationship with Openwide Coastal Ltd, who manages the Pier and Pavilion Theatre on our behalf, and wishes Rebecca every good fortune in her new role.” Rebecca’s diverse career has also seen her training and developing young people throughout many differing communities in Norfolk and her network of contacts with community groups will prove to be a great opportunity for the Pier and our Seaside

Special show to reach into new areas of the community and encourage a new generation of lovers of variety and “live” family entertainment.

Dear Margaret

I would like to say thank you very much to the person who handed my wallet into Cromer Police Station last month. Thank you! Karen The Baguette Shop, Cromer

B-Max Tested

I had the opportunity to test drive the Ford B-Max supplied by East Coast Motors in Beach Road, Cromer, reports Pete Smewin.

The B-Max is the Ford model between the Fiesta and Focus and is a really good recent innovative and ingenious addition to The Ford range.

It comes in three styles, Studio Zetec and the top of the range Titanium. The model I drove was the mid range Zetec.

It is a five-door, the rear doors are sliding and when the front and rear doors are open give you an impressive unobstructed 1.5 metres opening making it easier to load and unload, especially when you are strapping children into a child safety seat. The B-Max achieves this by concealing its central strengthening pillar within the doors rather than in the body side giving you the unobstructed opening. The front passenger and drivers seatbelts are housed within the seat structure rather than the bodywork which was the only thing that I had to get used to.

The range consists of four petrol engines including the 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine which gained Ford the prestigious engine of the Year award in 2012.

Open 10 am to 3.30 pm Entry through gate on Holt Road between Argos and cemetry

The Zetec model I drove also features the Ford EcoMode driver information system, which is a smart software monitor of your driving style. It displays the impact on your cars fuel economy, which definitely helped me change my style of driving. This was a delightful experience to drive this well equipped and responsive compact car and I could not fault it for comfort, ease of driving and its loading and unloading capabilities. All in all this is a very classy little car. Prices start from just £12,995.

I would urge you to give Adam or Graham, at East Coast Motors (01263 513181) an early telephone call to book your test drive in this impressive car. I do not think you will be disappointed.

NNDC’s First Floor Gallery presents:

A mixed-media exhibition by Mike Pert 21 May – 22 July

North Norfolk District Council’s public art gallery is presenting a stunning new exhibition featuring photographs and collages from local artist and photographer Mike Pert.

The exhibition includes atmospheric black and white photos as well as colourful abstract shots from north Norfolk and other locations around the world, along with vibrant mixed media collages.

Born in 1947, Mike studied art for three years from 1964 to 1967. He has regularly exhibited in joint exhibitions throughout the UK, with previous solo shows at The Henderson Gallery in Edinburgh, at the National Trust’s Blickling Hall, Aylsham, and Wimpole Hall, Cambridge, at the Coast Festival 2012 and previously in the NNDC First Floor Gallery.

NNDC seeks to offer opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit first-floor ‘gallery’ area in its Holt Road offices in Cromer, and in turn provides staff and visitors to the building the opportunity to see a variety of different artists’ work. Currently six exhibitions are held annually; open for view to the public during normal office hours; Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 8.30am – 5pm, Wednesday 10am – 5pm, Friday 8.30am – 4.30pm.

Overstrand Evening WI

01263 513543.

A group of members plus visitors set off from the Foundry Arms on 5 April for a circular walk round Northrepps. We stopped at St Mary’s church where Churchwarden, Janet Payne, talked about the church’s history and pointed out items of particular note. Carrying on from the church we walked in sunshine, along footpaths and quiet lanes before returning to the Foundry Arms for refreshments.

Later in April, Liz Crane, Chairman of the Cromer Flower Club gave members a practical flower arranging demonstration. Using different mediums, Liz’s arrangements gave us inspiration and ideas for spring time displays.

Our May meeting started with a fish and chip supper. This was followed by the annual Resolution Meeting to consider the demise of our High Streets and town centres. W.I. Advisor Coral Batchelor was present to provide further information. There was plenty of discussion on this complex topic, prior to putting the resolution to the vote.

Our meeting on 19 June provides two alternatives, either a walk round Overstrand taking in points of interest, or games in the Parish Hall. The evening will be rounded off with strawberries and cream, plus a sale of donated goods.

We welcome visitors to our meetings; these are on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall, Overstrand. 28

BILLIARDS and SNOOKER PLAYERS WANTED

Would you like to attend the league presentation and finals night as our guest? It will be at the Morley club on 15th June, finals start at 7-30 pm followed by presentation of trophies and a buffet. The ALBY BILLIARDS DARTS AND SNOOKER LEAGUE was formed in 1932 “to foster and improve the games of Billiards, Darts and Snooker in a sporting atmosphere”, in the North Norfolk area. At its height there were 18 Billiards teams who also had a darts team playing at the same time and venue and 48 Snooker teams in three or four divisions. Over the last few years this has gradually diminished to 5 Billiards teams that no longer play any darts and 7 snooker teams. To allow this league to continue and again grow in strength we are looking for new players for the Billiards and the Snooker teams or new 6 man teams that play in the Holt, Sheringham, Cromer, Mundesley, North Walsham, Aylsham and Hevingham area. If you are interested in playing Billiards or Snooker in a friendly atmosphere and are free on Thursday night for Billiards or Monday night for Snooker please contact General Secretary who will advise you of your nearest club. If you can form a full team we will be welcome new teams or returning teams and venues. The league AGM will be held in Aylsham on 15th July where the league fees are collected and new teams nominated so any applications should be made known to me as soon as possible. I look forward to hearing from you. Dave Curtis Alby League General Secretary Mobile 07586 035605 or email albybdsl@outlook.com

June Wedding

June is a special month, The month I chose to marry, I remember the day so well, The cream roses that I carried, The rustle of my silk dress, As I walked up the aisle, Then seeing the man I love, Turn to me and smile. But that was 50 years ago, The world is changing fast, As we sit in our garden, And reminisce about the past.

teams at the end. However it was Cromer with the lower score and lost 2-3. The club played in the Lord Fermoy Cup, this is the men’s competition where one rink plays away at the same time as another plays at home. The overall shot score decides the winner. At North Walsham Cromer won by one shot, but the home rink in a close encounter lost by 6 shots so we leave the competition for this season. In the County Jermy Cup which is a mixed rinks game, two men and two women in each of three rinks we came up against Aldiss Park BC from Dereham. Now this was a very close encounter. At the end the scoreboards showed that the visitors had won the game, but when the result cards were reviewed the result was a draw. That meant that one rink had to play a deciding end. However a number of the players had already left for home. That deciding end was not played so at the time of writing I do not know which of the two teams will progress to the next round!! In the Federation County League John Andreae and his Crabs team continued their very good start to the season with an excellent 7-2 home win against Dilham Cross Keys who are new to our league this season. The next game against Sheringham Morley was postponed so a new date will be arranged. The Crows team were due to play Overstrand but again that game was postponed due I think to heavy rain on the green. A new date has already been fixed for this one. The following week at home against Mundesley they started well but the visitors gained control and eventually ran out comfortable winners so the Crows lost 0-9. The afternoon NANSA League team were at

The next game was away against Reepham Nomads who play on the Lakeside BC green at Lyng, this game proved to be very close and only a few shots separated the

home against Sheringham Morley and just lost 3-5. Strange league that because they now do not have a game until 10th June. The ladies of the club had a game against a team from the Norfolk Vice Presidents Association, and despite Kay having to play in grey shoes, she forgot her white ones, they had a very good win. Two ladies triples also went a few days later to Swanton Abbott but this time came second. In a two triple game against R G Carter BC one triple won the other lost but the shots scored overall were the same so a draw was the result. There is really very little other to report this week other than the league and cup results so all I can do is move on to the forthcoming games that you may wish to come along and support...
