CREEPY HOUSE SUMMER READING CHALLENGE
There's a spine-tingling adventure waiting for children when they take part in the 2013 Summer Reading Challenge – Creepy House. They can join the adventure at any Norfolk library during the summer holidays. Pick up a pack and explore the Creepy house, discover its secrets and meet some of the hair-raising residents! Read six books and collect stickers that reveal the creepy residents of the house. All children who read six or more books will be presented with a medal and certificate to celebrate their achievement. Look out too for the Mungler Top Trumps cards to collect and swap with family and friends. Children can choose any books they like: fact books, stories, joke books or picture books. Audio books and e-books count as well, so long as they borrow them from a library. Are Norfolk’s children brave enough to explore The Awful Upstairs, The Gruesome Ground Floor and The Spine-tingling Cellar? Watch out for dates of creepy events at the library – coming soon!

BBC ORGANIST RETURNS TO CROMER
Nigel Ogden, long term BBC presenter of ‘The organist Entertains’ returns to Cromer on Friday 19 July. He will compere and give a charity organ concert organised by Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club. Nigel Ogden is well known to North Norfolk audiences for his originality and exuberance, having returned by popular demand many times in recent years. For these Rotary charity concerts, he always chooses a programme of light classical and popular music, most of which he adapts to suit his own playing style. Titles of this year’s pieces range from 200th Anniversary, From Cavalleria Rusticana and Three from Thomas Fats Waller to Classics from Stage and Screen, Klassikal Kaleidoscope and
Hercule Poirot and Rodney Bennett. The concert, on this occasion in aid of local causes, starts at 7.30 pm in Cromer Parish Church. Tickets (which include programme) are £11 and are available from Randall’s Electrical, Church Street in Cromer, Bertram Watts, Church Street in Sheringham, or on the door.

SEASIDE SPECIAL 2013 Continued from front cover...
Dancing. They always give us the local "wow" factor, and this performance was no exception.
The scenery, Ian Westbrook, costumes, Laura Whyte, and lighting, Amanda Hill, are excellent and add to the complete enjoyment of this superb show. his is a great
show of which the Pavilion Theatre, Cromer Pier can be truly proud. We are now looking forward to show 2; Strictly Seaside.
Celebrating 36 years as one of England’s best-loved summer variety shows Seaside Special is a rich blend of comedy, music, song and dance featuring colourful costumes and stunning stage sets.
Cromer’s iconic Pier and Pavilion Theatre delivers that extra magic to a show that has an ever- increasing fan base bringing together people of all ages who have one thing in common, the love of variety.
In today’s TV and gadget world it is a rare treat to sit and watch a live performance where the cast interact with the audience and bring an extra sparkle to the Show.
This year’s Seaside Special features a diverse blend of music from today’s charts, top West End ballads and the classics. Add to this a mix of comedy, illusions, impressions and dance routines and you have the show. In fact you have two shows – ‘Variety Dotcom’ and ‘Strictly Seaside’ promising something for everyone. Over the years Seaside Special has helped forge the careers of many of today’s performers and even today is giving new talent a chance to perform in front of an audience and enjoy that feeling that can only be found in live theatre. Steve Cutbush Managing Director of Openwide Coastal said “I am very excited about this year’s Seaside Special. I believe we have created two very different shows that will bring out the best in all our artists and be a colourful and memorable experience for our audiences of all ages. This year we have introduced a Family Fun Saturday Matinee by adding a little bit more for the younger members of our audience. We understand the need to encourage families and young people to come and see the show and have created some great value family packages to help facilitate this. It is important for the future of live variety that we inspire the younger generation as they are as much a part of the future of live variety as the Pavilion Theatre is as the venue to one of the top variety shows in the country - Seaside Special”. Seaside Special runs until 28 September Tuesday – Saturday at 7.30pm with Matinee performances starting on Tuesday 2nd July at 2.30pm

West End Star Liz Robertson is Special Guest at Sell-out Amateur Show
The well known actress Liz Robertson was the special guest of the Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society in Cromer earlier this month.
The Society, which was putting on the musical, The Sound of Music, had had sell out performances all week, crowned with standing ovations most nights. Liz and her husband Patrick Deuchar were at the final performance on Saturday 1 June, and after the show, Liz signed the theatre’s guest book and was presented with a posy of flowers by the two youngest actresses, Nina and Emily, who shared the role of Gretl, the youngest von Trapp child.
Liz played the role of Maria in the Sound of Music at Sadler’s Wells in 1992, so was no stranger to the play. The Society put on a musical each year at the Pavilion Theatre, Cromer, as well as two plays at Sheringham Little Theatre to raise funds for their chosen charity. This year, their chosen charity is Parkinson’s UK. The actress Jane Asher, wrote to the society to send her best wishes for the show and to tell them about her work as President of Parkinson’s UK.
Andrew Payne, Chairman of the Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society said “The audience reaction to this production has been so gratifying and makes all the hard
work done by so many not just on stage but off, so worthwhile. The full houses and standing ovations were just the icing on the cake!
the company a successful run.
The Cromer and Sheringham Operatic Society, who will be celebrating their centenary next year, are already getting ready for next year’s musical, ‘Oliver!’ which will be just one part of the year long celebrations and fund raising events planned for this award winning Society. Liz Robertson was kind enough to e-mail the following to the Society after her visit: On Saturday 1 June I was treated to a performance of The Sound Of Music by the Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society at the Pavilion Theatre on Cromer Pier. From the moment the curtain went up any idea that I was watching an amateur production never entered my mind.
And our generous audiences, cast and crew raised a record breaking £2437 during the week for our chosen charity, Parkinson’s UK - a truly wonderful result from a memorable week.”
The Society also received letters from Nicholas Hammond, who played the part of Fredrich in the original film, and Johannes von Trapp, the youngest son of Captain and Maria von Trapp, also sent a letter wishing
Under the direction of Peter Howell the performances were all of a very high calibre, with special mention to Helen Hayes who played Maria with huge charm. The children were excellent. These can be difficult parts to cast, but in this production they were so natural not at all 'stagey' and with great singing voices. Little Gretl was utterly adorable and stole our hearts when she sang So Long Farewell. Many a professional rendition of this show would have been thrilled to have achieved the polished performance I saw last Saturday.

‘Trust’ the Air Cadets to help out when they are needed! Cadets from the Air Training Corps were on hand at two recent events at Blickling Hall which is part of the National Trust and which heavily relies on volunteer support.
Cadets in their RAF issued uniforms were seen throughout the grounds and gardens on both occasions and, to some, the scenes must have been reminiscent of the days in World War II when a part of Blickling Hall was the Officers Mess for nearby RAF Oulton Heavy Bomber base.
Blickling Hall “tweeted” to the Air Cadets after their event “You were amazing - we couldn't have done it without you. It was an amazing fund-raising weekend. See you again soon.”
However, the cadets were there to help with the Blickling Hall Bank Holiday Weekend Spring Event and the Cliff Richard Concert evening on 6 June, to help with the car parking and visitor guidance.
The late May Bank Holiday saw the cadets in various parts of the grounds helping out, with most of the effort being to park record numbers of cars for visitors to, not only the hall and formal gardens, but also the wood walks and cycle paths and the new and incredible Segway tours.
That wasn’t all visitors were at Blickling Hall for as there was a myriad of other things to do and see that weekend. These included the Spring Event Craft Marquee and Vintage

out. Part of their core aim is to show good citizenship so the cadets are well versed in the art of car parking and many of the cadets are using their experiences at Blickling as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme involvement. The time spent helping at Blickling will be part of their “Service” which is an essential part of the Award.
Displays, and the semi-permanent displays for the Hobart Gallery artisans display and the newly updated RAF Oulton Museum which highlights the connection between Blickling Hall and RAF Oulton.
Like many other National trust venues volunteers are essential for special events so it was a great opportunity for the Cromer and Fakenham Air Cadets to step in and help

During tough economic times, do you need another pair of hands to help with your workload but cannot afford to invest in qualified staff?
The answer could be to recruit an apprentice. Modern apprenticeships have changed significantly, and are now an excellent way to grow your business and take on those additional jobs while keeping costs to a minimum.
JTL is a registered charity and one of the leading training providers to the Building Services Engineering Sector. JTL works with 3,500 businesses and supports 9,700 apprentices, delivering more advanced apprenticeships than anyone else in the sector.

Angela Carpenter, Employer Engagement Officer for Norfolk, is keen to make plumbers, heating engineers and electrical installers aware of a very special offer to businesses.
“JTL has 16 fully-funded spaces available for Level 2/Intermediate plumbing apprentices to begin training in Norwich from September 2013. JTL will meet all tuition costs, and the cost of all on-site assessments. Every plumbing apprentice will be provided with a substantial tool kit from Monument Tools, plus all text books, college materials and assessment port folios. JTL will also help to access a range of grants available to meet the cost of the apprentice’s wages – employers are obliged to pay apprentices at least the apprenticeship minimum wage of £2.65 per hour, for a minimum 30 hour week. However, grants are available ranging from £1,500 to £5,000 to help meet the cost of wages. Grants are of course subject to eligibility, so please contact me now for more details and to discuss your requirements. The operation was carried out the same day and Millie is now back with her fosterer and by the time you read this she will also have been vaccinated and chipped and ready to be put up for adoption. Wonderful news for this delightful little cat, who has battled to fitness with the care and attention she has received from her fosterer vet. Roger, another young cat has also been causing concern but happily, he too, is now up for adoption. He originally came into care with six other cats and had settled into a new home as the only cat. However, after a few weeks, he developed balance problems and holds his head to one side. Because he had an eye infection while previously in care, antibiotics were prescribed to see if the problem improved. In the meantime his new owner fell over him and was concerned this could happen again so it was agreed that we should take him back. As there was no improvement to his condition further investigations
were necessary. As his symptoms indicated that he could have FIP blood tests were taken and thankfully although initial results indicated this could be the problem the results of all the blood tests ruled this out. Tests were also undertaken for FIV and FELV and these were also negative. X-rays were then taken to see whether the problems were caused by problems in the inner ear and clearly indicated this was not the case. His vet concluded that the problem could either be caused by a tumor or a vascular bleed. A course of steroids combined with antibiotics were prescribed and his response to these indicate he did have a vascular bleed which has caused some scarring, the cause of the balance problem. Now of low dose steroids we are hoping that in time his balance will be restored, although there are no guarantees. Roger is now looking for a new home. He is a very friendly lad, who loves receiving a fuss, rolls over for tummy rubs and loves other cats. We all love him. If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call. If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

With the assistance of members, the afternoon was organised by W.I. Committee Member Mrs Vivienne Hastings. Visitors flock to the fourth Crab & Lobster Festival
Over the weekend of 18 & 19 May a record number of people flocked to the fourth annual Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival.
The skies were at times overcast but the spirit of the Festival saw people turn out in their droves to a crowded Cromer on the Saturday and into a sunny Sheringham on the Sunday. Local businesses have reported an upsurge in trade with local B&Bs, hotels and caravan parks reporting full houses and return visits specifically for the Festival. Many local businesses have reported one of their busiest weekends of the year. One local cafe in Cromer said “we've had a really busy weekend; it's been absolutely full on in the kitchen!”
Festival president Hilary Cox said “even the grey weather on Saturday didn't dampen the wonderful atmosphere or cool the charisma of the festival, it was a fantastic weekend”. A family visiting the Festival and staying locally said “What are the dates for next year? We want to make sure we can book in to the B&B in good time”.
With over 40 events, this year’s Festival offered activities and entertainment for all the family across the weekend. The Festival kicked off in style with a sell-out Opening Concert on Cromer Pier on Friday night. Compered by the fabulous Olly Day the audience were treated to finely-crafted folk music by John Conolly, a beautiful display by Marlene’s School of Dance, comedy from Nigel ‘Boy’ Syer and the buoyant sea-side sound of The Sheringham Shantymen.
The weekend saw the Festival’s now traditional mix of superb seafood, scintillating street entertainment, music, comedy, film, seafood competitions, traditional seafaring craft demonstrations, local food and craft stalls and the Festival’s Cookery Theatre.
This year the Cookery Theatre played host to an array of demonstrations by local and not -so-local chefs and master seafood specialists. Audiences were shown how to make the most of our local, scrumptious seafood across the two days. Organiser Nick Samujlik said “the demonstrations this year offered a mix of traditional, oriental and educational demos that got the audience’s mouths watering and their taste buds tingling”. In Cromer this was hosted in a marquee on Evington Lawns alongside a bar Cromer Times 424 June 29th 2013
from Woodforde’s which included the Crab & Lobster Festival ale. One visiting family said “We're from Lyon in France, this is just a lovely event...you're all so friendly & helpful, and we love the cookery sessions”
Unfortunately the everpopular World Pier Crabbing Championships had to be postponed due to rough seas on the Saturday. However this has been rescheduled for Sunday 25 August when the Festival hosts its annual charity auction on Cromer Prom.
Scores of people queued up to take part in the Crab Dressing Demonstrations hosted by Julie Davies and accompanying this there were demonstrations from local fishermen on the art of net braiding and pot making.
Children at the Festival were entertained by Punch & Judy shows, craft events and street entertainment for the whole family. Adults and children alike were fascinated by the tank of live crabs and lobsters at the Festival which was hosted by the Eastern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority.
Local museums offered a host of events across the two towns and on the evening of Saturday 18 May, the premiere of a new film entitled ‘Crabs & Shannocks – The Longshore Fishermen of North Norfolk’ was screened in Cromer.
The Festival, which has been hailed as the most successful so far, is enthusiastically looking forward to 2014 with the dates provisionally announced as 16-18 May 2014. As one
family said of the Festival “We've come from Leicester each year since you started, we love it and this is certainly the best yet”.
The committee would like to thank everyone involved in the Festival – the sponsors, local businesses, volunteers, performers, chefs, stall holders and visitors – without whom, the Festival would not happen.
Events continue until mid-August with the Seafood Trail and the Festival’s Lovely Lifebuoy Art Trail. A leaflet containing both trails can be picked up at Cromer or Sheringham Tourist Information centres. The Seafood Trail has been attracting avid seafood followers since it launched at Easter, one family following the trail in Sheringham said “We've been here all day, it's been wonderful and we've managed to eat at three places... it's the best seafood we've ever tasted!”

St Andrews Methodist Church Flower Festival The annual flower festival of St Andrews Methodist Church, Cromer Road, Sheringham takes place from Thursday 4th to Sunday 7th July.
The festivals have been run for over 40 years and over the years they have grown significantly in both quality of exhibits, size and attendance to become arguably the best festival in Norfolk. Last year the festival attracted well over 3000 visitors with several coach parties visiting this truly remarkable event. A total of nearly £14,000 was raised for church funds with a sizeable donation given to Sheringham RNLI. This charity received the most votes from visitors to the festival who were invited to select from several choices of charities.
Every year the floral arrangements of the festival are designed to a specific theme. Last year’s theme was “reaching out” with floral arrangements depicting many ways that this is done – from the light of a lighthouse reaching out to guide and direct to the many ways that
God’s love reaches out to everyone. Our photos from last year’s festival give a flavour of the quality of the exhibitions and the attention to detail the designers take in covering their subject.
This year’s Festival theme, “We have a lot to be thankful for” will be depicted by more than 30 large stunning arrangements and we are confident that the designers of the displays will once again excel in their interpretation of the theme. Throughout the festival background music, played mainly by organists, will add to the ambiance of the event.
Entry to the Festival is free, the money being raised totally from donations and from proceeds of catering and from the many varied stalls run by church members. Examples of these stalls include plants, jigsaws, books, arts and crafts,
souvenirs and gifts, jewellery, Stained Glass Art, Christian bookstall, Traidcraft stall, quality bric-a-brac, a raffle and various quizzes. Catering forms a major part of the Festival and many past visitors have complimented us on the quality of light lunches, cream teas and the extensive choice of cakes that are on offer. Overall a visit to St Andrew`s Flower Festival can be considered a great day out.
Opening times of the festival are Thursday, Friday & Saturday 10am to 6pm, and Sunday 12 noon to 6 pm. The church is wheelchair friendly and has disabled toilet facilities.
Further details of this year`s and historical festivals, where to find us plus much more information on St Andrews Church in general can be found on our web site www.sheringhammethodist.org.uk
We look forward to extending a warm welcome to visitors to our festival

Top of the Class
The summer repertory season at Sheringham Little Theatre opens on Saturday, 6 July with a journey back to school. John Godber’s comedy runs until Monday, July 15 and then returns between Saturday, August 3 and Tuesday, August 6.
Set in a high school, the play takes a wry look at the education system.
at school, taking part in the drama groups, and then as a workshop leader,” says Ryan, who comes from North Walsham but is in his final year at the renowned Rose Bruford drama college, in London. “This is my first professional role and it is very exciting to be taking it on in Sheringham.”
Director of the Little Theatre, Debbie Thompson, adds: “Ryan took part in our first major production, Bugsy Malone, when he was younger so it now feels as if he has come full circle. With his involvement and Warren’s, there will be a very Norfolk feel to Teechers.”
It tells the story of three students and their various trials and tribulations – both in class and in life, explains Norwichbased director Warren Cathrine.
Warren, who brought Blackout to Sheringham in April, is looking forward to working more closely with the venue.
“I have directed Teechers before and am looking forward to doing it again,” he says. “I think it’s a great play because, despite being written in the 1980s, it is still very relevant today. It also tackles a subject that I am passionate about – education.
“I like the sophistication of the play. John Godber tells such good stories and even though the play is humorous, there is still a strong message behind it.”

“I love the theatre – it is so efficient and professional while also being relaxed,” he says. “I can’t wait to see Teechers staged there as part of the summer rep and feel very honoured that it will be opening the whole season.”

Norman Lamb signs up to help improve phone signal in North Norfolk
North Norfolk’s Member of Parliament is backing a new campaign to improve mobile phone reception in the area. The Countryside Alliance is asking people to become phone detectives this summer and help it map real phone reception rates across the UK and Norman Lamb is behind the cause.
North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “Everyone pays the same for their phone package but phone reception is very variable and many people are not getting a good deal. I have been pressing phone operators to improve their coverage in North Norfolk and I welcome additional efforts to get a better service for mobile phone customers in North Norfolk.”
The Countryside Alliance is asking people to download the free RootMetrics app onto their smartphone or tablet and use it while they are at home as well as while they are out and about.
The app tests the strength of their signal and automatically records the result. The information will be used to make the case for improving mobile reception, especially in isolated rural areas.
For further information on how to use the app and to see results so far, visit: www.rootmetrics.com/uk North Norfolk’s only clifftop touring park static caravans for sale Luxury Caravan Hire at Sandy Gulls

Parts of North Norfolk suffer from poor mobile phone reception. Norman Lamb has led efforts to get improvements to mobile phone signals in communities such as Sheringham and other parts of North Norfolk.
Two July Festivals on North Norfolk’s Poppy Line
Vintage cars, vintage buses, vintage steam and diesel trains. Over the first weekend in July (Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th) the Poppy Line’s Vintage Transport Festival will bring around 300 classic cars and buses to North Norfolk. Centred on Holt Station, the event includes free trips on some of the historic buses. Dinner will be served on the crack “North Norfolkman” train on the Saturday, leaving Sheringham at 7pm. The price per head (including travel) is £46.50, drinks extra. Advance booking essential – call 01263 820 800.
The railway’s 89-years-old wooden-bodied train will be running at the Festival, and every day until 14th July. This train pioneered the use of the articulated technology used to link carriages on today’s Eurostar high-speed trains – though speeds on the Poppy Line will be a little more modest! Good news is that there’ll be no extra charge for travelling on this historic train – the normal fares of £11 adult, £10 senior, £7.50 child 5-15 (under fives are free) and £37 family (2 adults + 2 children or 3 adults + 1 child) apply throughout the month. Tickets give unlimited hop-on, hop-off travel all day and include free admission to the fascinating William Marriott Museum at Holt Station.
The 12th annual North Norfolk Railway Beer Festival takes place at Sheringham Station and runs from Friday 19th July to Sunday 21st July. Entry is free, and over 100 real ales, ciders and perries will be on offer in the marquee bar on platform 2. The bar will be open (while stocks last!) from 11am to 11pm on the Friday and Saturday, and till 4.30pm on the Sunday – though the first two days usually provide the best choice of beers. Hot food will be served day and evening, there’ll be live entertainment every day, and souvenir glasses and polo shirts will be on sale. The sounds and smells of the steam age give this great BeerFest a very special atmosphere; and it’s a meeting place for real ale fans from far and wide, with at least one London publican making the pilgrimage.

Marsh report into region's ambulance service confirms concerns North Norfolk Labour Party’s Act on Ambulances campaigners have welcomed Anthony Marsh’s report into the East of England Ambulance Service, which has confirmed their concerns first raised by the campaign nearly 12 months ago.
across the country, and Anthony Marsh attributes some handover problems experienced in the East of England to problems across the country.
at the top of the East of England Ambulance Service Trust, who we presented our petition to last year. They did not listen then, and I believe the directors across the board should be reconsidering their position."
Denise Burke, chair of North Norfolk Labour Party and an Act on Ambulances campaigner, said: “We set up the Act on Ambulances campaign 12 months ago with real concerns about the proposals to cut our ambulance service’s budget, and with the aim to halt the move to reduce the number of ambulances on the street. This report confirms that a reliance on Rapid Response Vehicles and private ambulance overtime has taken the Trust in the wrong direction, and agrees we need more ambulances in our region to address response times.
The report confirms campaigners were right to start the petition (now signed by 11,000 people) against cuts to Double Staffed Ambulances (DSA), particularly as the report points out the push towards Rapid Response Vehicles has left too many vehicles serving patients without being able to take them to hospital. It says the Trust is providing an insufficient number of DSAs, and that more are required.
The local Labour Party believes this report is another indication of the growing A&E crisis
"At the same time complacent MPs in government cannot pass the buck either, when their reorganisation of the NHS and cuts are contributing to a growing A&E crisis across the country. In his report Anthony Marsh confirms this is a challenging time for the NHS, and that problems with handovers at our hospitals are not exclusive to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital."
"We will continue to campaign on this important issue and encourage residents to continue to send us their stories to www.actonambulances.co.uk.”
"The report also confirms our fears about those

CAD Singers - North Norfolk Concert Band - Cromer Parish Church
Howard and Elizabeth Rooke brought singers and instrumentalists to Cromer Parish Church, each volunteering their services to help raise funds for the restoration of the Church’s bells and thereby enabling Cromer to have a full octave of eight bells and securing the future of bell ringing in the town for the next 50 years.
The band opened the concert with a medley of favourite standards by Rodgers & Hammerstein under the heading of ‘The Golden Age of Broadway’. Then came the singers who performed four pieces accompanied by Howard Rooke on keyboard, the choices pleasing to most concert goers and including a most interesting arrangement of ‘I Believe’.
DECLARATION OF RESULT North Norfolk
As the concert, which included five performances of diverse styles and textures by the band and two by the singers each encompassing three or four numbers, progressed, both ensembles were becoming more relaxed and really enjoying themOF POLL selves.
George Gershwin’s ‘Somewhere to watch over me’ and Cole Porter’s ‘I’ve got you under my skin’ sung by Linda Phelps, whose vocal range and sonorous tone and stage presences backed in style by this versatile band under the energetic directorship of Howard Rooke, was well appreciated by the audience.

Dark Thoughts and Dubious Motives
Murder is afoot at Sheringham Little Theatre when the summer repertory season continues with Deathtrap.
Ira Levin’s dark thriller opens on Wednesday 17 July and runs until Thursday 25 July, before returning from Monday 19 August and Saturday 24 August.
The gripping tale focuses on former writer Sidney Bruhl and his thoughts of murder when presented with a script by an unknown playwright. There follows an intricately woven plot, which transports the audience through a rollercoaster ride of thrills, twists and frights, says director Helen Leblique.
“Deathtrap contains, as Charles Spencer put it - reviewing a London production a couple of years ago - ‘more twists than a bucket of snakes,’ at the same time as it wittily deconstructs the conventions of the thriller
genre. Audiences can look forward to a howling storm, an unreliable power supply, a Dutch psychic with a sense of impending disaster, and some violent set-pieces.”
Helen says the play, which stars Rupert Mason Loraine Metcalf, Joshua Jefferies, Cornelius Garrett and Rebecca Todd, looks set to be great fun.
“The challenge for me as the director is to maintain the balance of comedy and thriller, so that there are both laughs and screams,” she admits. “I am delighted to be returning to Sheringham Little Theatre after the success of The Norman Conquests last year, to tackle my first thriller!
“I am also really looking forward to working with several of the actors I directed last year,as well as some new ones. One of the newcomers to Sheringham is Joshua Jefferies,

who I directed at East 15 acting school a couple of years ago. Josh studied acting and stage combat, and I anticipate putting his skills in stage violence to good use in Deathtrap.”
Josh said he was also excited to being involved in the thriller: “Not only am I performing in two very different thrilling plays and working with two amazing directors, but I also help choreograph and perform some stage combat. This, along with the rest of the action, will leave the audience stuck to their seats wanting more!"

July
The months have slipped by, It is now July. Two larks are soaring high in the sky, Blue cornflowers are growing beside the stream, I could sit here all day and happily dream. A blue butterfly hovers and alights on my arm, In a moment she’ll move, so I have to keep calm. I pick up my book, A grass snake slithers by, It’s time to leave, And I give a sad sigh. Charity Golf Day for PSP
Four local ladies – Sam Hele, Fiona Spencer, Ali Cook and Sally Ling - recently set out on a mission to raise money for Progressive Supernuclear Palsy, and at the same time raise awareness of the illness.
The resulting charity golf day was held at Mundesley Golf Club on Friday 14 June and far exceeded their greatest expectations. The total raised has not yet been finalized but it is in excess of £4500.
Joint organiser Sam Hele continues ‘The Golf Day was a huge success. The sun was shining, the atmosphere was great and all the golf teams had great fun. Some played better golf than others but all those playing thought the course at Mundesley was in fantastic condition. The money raised will be used by the PSP Association to help research the disease and to help support families and carers of those suffering with the disease’.
‘PSP is a degenerative illness that destroys nerve cells in the brain. There are about 10,000
people with PSP in the UK. There is neither a cure nor any effective treatment, but there is still a lot we can do to help people with PSP, and their carers, obtain the best possible care’. ‘People's generosity has been overwhelming.
Sam Hele, Fiona Spencer, Ali Cook, Sally Ling
Sam’s mother Marion, who is also great friends with Fiona, Ali and Sally, has had PSP for seven years. She is now in a wheelchair and

Sparkling End to Probus Year
Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club’s outgoing Chairman, Ken Macnish, was surprised when the AGM was interrupted by the Restaurant Manager of The Links Hotel, Jason Brown. On behalf of Mackenzie Hotels, Jason presented Ken with a bottle of champagne to mark the end of his year in office.
Dave expressed his thanks to all the members who had welcomed him into the club exactly three years ago. He said that he is constantly surprised by the number of people to whom
Ken thanked Jason both for the unexpected presentation and for the excellent service which the club has received over the past year from Jason and all the other staff. He also mentioned the members’ delight at the demise of the previous difficult cutlery.
The usual business of the AGM was then conducted. All of the committee members were thanked for their work over the year and it was acknowledged that it had been particularly difficult due to the sudden and untimely death of Peter Cooper, our former Secretary. Matters were concluded with Ken inaugurating Dave Vickery as Chairman for the coming year.
speaker programme has been designed to help in that endeavour.
The next monthly lunch meeting will take place on Tuesday, 2 July, followed by a presentation by Sheringham’s Town Crier, Tony Nelson, on the subject of The Sheringham Little Theatre. Tony has been closely involved in The Little Theatre over a long period and has played an important part in its history himself. His talk is highly recommended - it interleaves the history of the theatre with that of the town itself and his passion for both is evident in his delivery.
Membership of the club is open to retired or nearly retired gentlemen wishing to socialise, enjoy good lunches and listen to speakers on topics which are mostly of local interest. There is a small annual subscription but you are not required to join on your first visit, so trying us out will just cost you the price of the lunch. Contact Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 for more information and to book
he talks that seem never to have even heard of Probus, so his goal for the forthcoming year is to raise the profile of the Cromer and Sheringham Club and Probus generally. The
Time to Interact with Cromer Pier
Earlier this month Cromer Pier and the Pavilion Theatre announced the introduction of their brand new website, providing you with everything you need to know about their great shows and fantastic live entertainment. It's informative, it's colourful, it's easy to navigate and extremely user friendly in every sense.
Two years ago Cromer moved more into the electronic age by introducing the chance to book show tickets via the internet – this was extremely well received and continues to be very successful with lots of people enjoying this method of communication and asking us to offer more via the electronic route.
This year therefore we introduced a regular monthly e-newsletter called spotlight on Cromer Pier where registered customers who
wish to receive it can keep up to date with the gossip and what’s going on at the pier and in the theatre throughout the year.
By visiting the new website you can interact with us further by signing-up to our Customer Loyalty Card where patrons can earn valuable points towards some fantastic rewards every time they make a purchase be it in Coffee Reef, the Pavilion Bar, Footprints Gift Shop or when they book a ticket at the Box Office.
The site encourages you to share numerous items with friends on Facebook and also to tweet about Cromer Pier via the Twitter Link. Also new this year is Cromer Pier’s very own YouTube Channel where you can view backstage interviews with visiting acts and cast members of Seaside Special. One of our recent videos even made it onto a recent

With 510 seats the theatre also presents a high-quality mix of comedy, music, dance, opera, musicals and community shows throughout the season. The pier is open to the public all year around and this includes many of its facilities such as Coffee Reef Gelateria, the Pavilion Bar, Footprints Gift Shop and the Box Office.
As well as welcoming visitors to the area, the Pavilion Theatre is a resource for the local community and the theatre welcomes community hires as part of our diverse programme of events.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER THE NORFOLK NURSERY NETWORK herbaceous and climbers, many rare hellebores, old roses and salvias
• Hoecroft Plants, Wood Norton – Ornamental grasses, variegated and coloured foliage plants
• Norfolk Herbs, Dillington, Dereham – Herbs, scented pelargoniums, bay trees and terracotta
It may have been an awful winter and disappointing spring for us gardeners but we should spare a thought for the specialist plant nurseries in our area. The large garden centres can survive such difficulties because they have diversified their products and have restaurants, cafes and similar attractions which bring in customers regardless of the weather but this is not so easy for the specialist Norfolk Nurseries that just concentrate on producing a huge range of plants and they need our support and custom.
We are very fortunate in Norfolk to have a network of specialist nurseries who have joined forces under the title ‘The Norfolk Nursery Network’ to grow the best plants for our garden and offer expert advice and service. Between them, these eleven nurseries have more than 16,000 species and varieties of the finest quality plants available, some of which can be ordered online.
The network comprises the following nurseries • Creake Plant Centre, South Creake, Fakenham – Wide range of shrubs,
• The Plantsman’s Preference, Diss – Hardy geraniums, ornamental grasses, unusual perennials and woodland plants
• Reads Nursery – Growers of high quality fruit trees
• The Romantic Garden Nursery , Swannington – A specialist nursery of mature trees and shrubs, topiary, terracotta and lead planters
• Thorncroft Clematis, Reymerston – Extensive range of clematis
A leaflet setting out full details of opening hours etc. for each nursery is available from Tourist Board offices and in this leaflet Alan Gray, from Radio Norfolk’s Gardening programme states ‘Anyone can grow and sell plants but members of the Norfolk Nursery Network have the expertise and knowledge of their subject to offer the very high standards that are required to become a member of this august group’. ‘When you buy from a nursery affiliated to the NNN, you are assured of quality and value and your purchases will have been grown to the highest quality’.
Some of the members of the NNN will have stalls selling plants at the following events (Please check with the nursery website or telephone if you want to ensure that a specific nursery is attending) • Sandringham Flower Show, Wednesday 31 July
• Urban Jungle, Old Costessey – Palms, tree ferns, bamboo, bananas, cannas, gingers and grasses
• West Acre Gardens Summer Showcase, Saturday 10 August • Norfolk Plant Heritage Autumn Plant Fair, Hethersett Village Hall, Sunday 25 August
• Walnut Tree Garden Nursery, Rockland St. Peter – Herbaceous perennials, ornamental trees, shrubs and roses
• West Acre Gardens, West Acre, King’s Lynn – Wide range of plants including an extensive range of alpines
• Woodgate Nursery, Aylsham – Over 600 varieties of perennials; shrubs, trees and climbers, fruit trees and bushes, seeds and bulbs, annuals and veg. Plants
• Specialist Plant Day, Pensthorpe, Saturday 14 September
The NNN has its own website
www.norfolknurseries.net
for more information and links to the individual nurseries.

Shakespeare comes to Mundesley
During the last week in July, The Mundesley Players will be staging Shakespeare’s most well known romantic comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, in the Coronation Hall.
A cast some twenty strong, aged between 13 and 60+, are currently busy rehearsing and working on the text. This is real community theatre, since half the cast are school pupils and the rest are adults.
‘The Dream’ intertwines the misadventures of two young couples who escape from Athena to the nearby woods and the rehearsals of a group of local craftsmen or ‘mechanicals’, whose play of Pyramus and Thisbe will be performed at the wedding celebration of Duke Theseus and Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons.
Shakespeare enjoyed the concept of ‘a play within a play’ and this is the best-loved example. Linking all the human to-ing and fro-ing are the interventions of Oberon, King of the Fairies, and his rascally aide, Puck, whose efforts add comic confusion. Bottom the Weaver gains an asses head and the temporary affections of Titania, Queen of the Fairies.
Several familiar faces will be seen among the actors, together with some exciting new talent. A small group of unaccompanied singers will provide musical atmosphere. The play is being directed by David Ross, and performances will take place on 25, 26 and 27 July at 7.30pm. Tickets will be available from 6 July.
Please find us at www.mundesley.org or on our Mundesley Players Facebook page and also on Twitter @players_p
Rotary Raises £1,100 for British Polio
The British Polio Fellowship is £1,100 better off thanks to the efforts of Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club.
Ladies of the Band
behind every group of successful men, it might be said, there is a group of successful women. This is certainly the case with the Cromer and Sheringham brass band.
Whilst the men outnumber the ladies by about six to one, the contribution made by the fairer sex in this ensemble certainly equals that of their male colleagues.
Jenny Thomas, a recent player with the Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band, plays tenor horn. However, if you are one of those people who go to the concerts of other bands in North Norfolk, you would most probably have seen her playing French horn or perhaps trumpet. To say she is a performing enthusiast is to greatly understate the fact.
Julie Snaith sits in the largest section of the band and plays cornet. That she is surrounded by men is definitely not a problem to her! She has no trouble holding her own with the best of them.
In charge of the Band is Jane Bussey, who in her role as Director of Music, keeps the musicians under control with her baton. Thursday evenings are practice nights, when the band members are put through their paces in preparation for upcoming events. Occasionally Jane will replace her baton with a brass instrument, or accompany a soloist on the piano.
Heather Shepherd along with the two men in her section, occupies the kitchen department – percussion section to non musicians. So, she needs to know how to play a variety of drums and cymbals, as well as instruments like the xylophone.
But why not come along to see and hear them in action? As part of the Patronal weekend of St Peter’s Church, Sheringham, the Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band will be presenting a concert, featuring the Church Choir, on Saturday 29 June. It starts at 7.30pm and admission is free, although a voluntary donation at the end of the evening would be greatly appreciated. We look forward to seeing you.
The money was raised during the Club’s Christmas Sleigh Collection around the streets of Cromer and outside Morrisons. Shirley Russell, a representative of the British Polio Fellowship in East Anglia attended the Club’s meeting in May to receive the cheque and tell members more about the aims and workings of the organisation.
“The British Polio Fellowship is a charity dedicated to helping and supporting around 12,000 people in the UK living with the effects of polio and Post Polio Syndrome – a neurological condition,” she explained. “The Fellowship provides information, welfare and support to those living with the effects to enable them to live fully independent and integrated lives.”
For many years, Rotary has had made polio eradication world-wide its top priority – concentrating particularly on India, Pakistan and Nigeria. This year Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club decided to support the work for polio sufferers in our own country – a problem many people think no longer exists.

Park ‘A’ they were beaten 0-8 and then away at Holt Swifts lost 2-6. This was followed by another home game this time against Cawston. They lost 0-8 despite two rinks making late resurgences, but not quite sufficient to get a point.
The Ladies section continue to have some successes. In the Norfolk County Webb Trophy, one rink at home, one away. They beat Martham BC to progress to the next round where they will play County Arts BC. We wish them all success.
Overall we continue to get better results in the And so I move on to the forthcoming games Tuesday evening Federation mixed County that you may wish to come along and support league. The Cromer Crabs played at home Tuesday 2nd July 6.45pm Cromer Crows v against Mill Farm and there was a very Overstrand BC: Federation County league game close game all round. Much tighter than we Wednesday 3rd July 2pm Holt Swallows: would have liked but the Crabs came out on NANSA League game top 5 ½ - 3 ½. Away against local rivals Suffield Park BC saw us score a convincing Wednesday 3rd July 6.30pm Reepham Nomads BC: Hansells League game win 9-0 and then at home against Holt Tawny Owls the Crabs won 7-2. Cromer Friday 5th July 2pm Ladies Day Crows are not finding it quite so easy Saturday 6th July 2pm against a number of very strong teams. Houghton BC: mixed triples game However away at Suffield Park ‘B’ they Tuesday 9th July 6.45pm Cromer Crabs v recorded a very good 7-2 win and then, Sheringham Morley BC: Federation County following a very close game against League game Overstrand in the rearranged game, they Wednesday 10th July 6.30pm Fakenham BC: just lost 3-6, although only losing the overHansells League game all score by only 1 shot They were looking Sunday 14th July 10am Club Presidents forward to the meeting with Holt Barn Owls Day at Runton Road. However after only about 8 ends the sprinkler system decided to turn Tuesday 16th July 6.45pm Cromer Crows v Suffield Park ‘B’: Federation County League itself on and the whole game was a literal game wash out. The problem was a power cut in the area the previous day which had caused Wednesday 17th July 2 pm Mundesley BC: confusion to the electronic timing gear. That mixed triples game game will be replayed. Their next game was Friday 19th July 2pm Glasgow BC: away against Reepham Town and despite mixed rinks game the sprinkler problems morale was still Saturday 20th July 2pm Aldiss Park BC: high, such that the Crows returned with a mixed triples game 5-4 win. Roger Purser and his NANSA team Peter Bird, 01263 512120 also continue to find teams in the Division One of the League difficult. The fixture arrangement is also not easy to deal with.
