Cromer WI

Our meeting for June was a week late as we could not have our usual day due to the local election. The speaker we had arranged could not make the new date so one of our members filled the gap.

Shirley Thwaits gave a talk about her “salt and pepper pots”. We wondered how a talk about a cruet set could hold our attention but it turned out to be a really fascinating story. Shirley and her husband Frank had been in the forces and the salt and pepper pots had travelled with them all around the world. Shirley gave us a lovely insight to her life and travels and we all listen spellbound.

We had a report on the WI AGM in Cardiff where our resolution to help Britain’s struggling High Streets was approved and an official WI campaign was launched.

Arrangements were made for a trip to the Flower Festival in Ely and a day out in Kings Lynn. In August we are having a Posh Frocks Evening with a buffet prepared by two of our members.

New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2.30pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street.

Our June meeting provided a choice of either a walk or a games evening. Fourteen members chose the walk - over the cliff tops and across the golf course, returning via the church footpath and Pauls Lane. Back at the hall we all enjoyed strawberries and cream as well as the opportunity to purchase bargains from the sales table.

REVIEW OF CONCERT

Held on Monday 24 June at Cromer Parish Church - The Way of Hope Foundation

Young musicians from Hungary invited to perform in Cromer Parish Church by Evelyn Smith, the Director of Canaan, the centre in Sheringham which gives shelter, love and security to many who have fallen on difficult times, gave a superb concert, displaying their collective and individual skills in solo and ensemble playing with mature stage presence, performing to a high standard.

Of the 12 young artists, nine of them were from just two families, augmented by three friends to complete the array of such masterful talent of which the youngest was just 10 years old!

Under the directorship of Zsolt Kormendy, the programme opened with "Amazing Grace" with the youngest musician singing the introductory verse completed by well balanced, with perfect intonation, singing by the quickly formed choir.

The sonata in E minor for violin solo, "Legende" by Henryk Wieniawski, was a truly beautiful and highly sensitive performance. The performance of Max Bruch’s violin concerto in G minor, 3rd movement, was the highlight of this concert, played from memory with such assurance and maturity in interpretation and style it was sheer delight, I am sure, to all present. After this came a string trio playing Mozart’s Divertimento in C major, serenely played with the rapport within this young trio being a sure sign of innate musicianship. It must be said the piano accompanists were so musically intelligent in their craft, superb in fact!

The wonderful group of young people, along with their leaders, devote hours of their time and expertise to raise funds for orphanages and mothers’ homes, and for those growing up in state care, helping their development and assisting them in their integration into society, and putting Christian values into focus.

It was good that these gifted young people, along with their teachers and parents, were welcomed to Cromer by Cromer Mayor, David Pritchard, who stayed for the whole concert and who, afterwards, talked with some of the performers conveying his enjoyment and appreciation of their performances.

CROMER CRAB, LIME AND GINGER FISHCAKE

Fresh coriander, crème fraiche, sweet Thai chilli sauce from head chef at The Grove - Gary Parrett

Cromer and superb, succulent, tasty crab has gone together for centuries. They taste great simply dressed and enjoyed with a lovely green salad, but we wanted to do something slightly more adventurous with this fantastic seafood.

John and Ann Graveling, who ran the Grove for over thirty years, are still the bosses in the garden, and Ann planted me a small herb garden last year which complements the wild mint, lemongrass, bay, garlic, parsley and rosemary that are dotted around the grounds. It’s a bit of an initiation for any new Chefs de Partie to send them out for fresh rosemary and watch them, ever-more frantically, searching the gardens until the sun begins to set over the distant church tower. One young lad set out to forage for some wild garlic at the beginning of April and still hasn’t come back in.

This recipe takes advantage of some lovely fresh coriander and ginger; tangy limes from Cromer Farm and Health shop, and of course, freshly caught Cromer crab – the King of seafood.

Ingredients Meat from two fresh Cromer crabs 1 cooked and mashed baking potato 1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh ginger 1 tablespoon chopped coriander 2 chopped spring onions Salt and pepper to taste

For breading 2 beaten eggs ½ litre milk Panko breadcrumbs 100g plain flour

Method ■ Cook and mash potato and let cool ■

Mix crabs, ginger, coriander and onions. and a squeeze of fresh lime

Serve with a fresh garden salad, Thai sweet chilli sauce and crème fraîche

Beat together the eggs and the milk Coat the crab cakes in flour then dip in the milk.

Deep fry in 180c oil for four to five minutes until golden brown

Coat heavily in breadcrumbs.

Recent Changes to the Planning System by Richard Hewitt Partner at Hayes + Storr, Sheringham

This two part article looks at some of the many changes that have been introduced over recent weeks and months by the Government. The second article will consider the increased flexibility that now exists for householders to extend their properties, and for changes to take place easily in the high street and elsewhere.

This first article looks at a more wide ranging tax regime that is now being rolled out across the Country, which has potential impact on all development of any significance.

Traditionally, significant schemes have undergone a public planning process involving a planning application, debate and decision. Parallel to that process, there has quite often been the creation of a “planning agreement” whereby developers, land owners and others make various financial and other commitments as a precondition to getting planning permission.

Typically a housing development may make a contribution towards the costs of education in the vicinity, and the site may be partly allocated for “affordable housing” available to those who are unable to buy their own home.

Whilst the “affordable housing” aspects, and some of the detailed direct impacts of the development may still be covered by a “planning agreement” under the new system, the new tax is designed to introduce a uniform

approach, that can easily be calculated, with the revenue being used to fund broader infrastructure requirements across any planning area.

This is known as the ‘community infrastructure levy’.

Only a hand full of local authorities has gone through the process leading to adopting a formal charging system, but many others are in the process now.

Whilst small scale developments will be excluded, any significant development will be charged at rates to be set calculated per square metre constructed or extended.

With a charge of £100 per square metre common place, it is obvious the impact this can have on the costs of development. These costs will either be passed on to ultimate property purchasers or occupiers, or reflected in reduced land prices.

Over the next 12 months many authorities will have adopted this tax, partly as a means to offset lack of central funding for schools, roads etc. The unknown factor is how much this tax will ‘choke off’ development that would otherwise have come forward.

The theory is that the tax should be set at a level that will allow economic activity and the resultant tax revenue to fund new infrastructure, but not at a level that would stifle economic activity.

Understandably, perhaps, there is a rush to secure planning permissions under the current regime, which many believe is cheaper for developers than the planned levy.

This sort of tax has been tried several times over recent decades but in every case has failed to take hold and has been abandoned. However this current regime does seem to have political weight behind it. The financial pressure is on local authorities to adopt this tax as perhaps the only practical way of securing infrastructure improvements that will no longer be funded centrally.

The creation of this new system from scratch is also a significant burden on local authorities.

They must be able to calculate and judge overall needs for infrastructure going forward, often without knowing precisely where and to what extent other funding sources will continue. They must acquire and use sophisticated financial skills to work out an appropriate level of charge that will meet the balance of simulating infrastructure without killing off development. Then the proposed charges schedules need to run through public examination and processes before they can be adopted.

At the time of preparing this article North Norfolk District Council are at the early stages of implementation, but it is expected that significant progress will need to be made before Spring next year.

It is obvious that this new regime has implications for land owners, developers and investors. Should you have any concerns as to how the regime could affect you in any of these circumstances please look out for the information published by NNDC over the coming months.

PARALLEL TIMES TO PLAY BELFRY ARTS CENTRE has run a variety of events every year since it FUNDRAISER GIG opened in September 2009.

Northrepps is set to rock to classic Blondie songs next month when Parallel Times, a Norfolk tribute band, headlines a fundraiser gig on Friday 19 July between 7.30pm and 11pm at Northrepps Village Hall, with proceeds going to The Belfry Arts Centre in Overstrand.

The band, fronted by well-known vocalist Julie Bunn, will play its repertoire of Blondie hits, including Atomic, Heart of Glass and Hanging on the Telephone. With a set-list packed with Blondie classics, an acoustic trio – West Runton's Scubayak – as support and a live music running time of two and a half hours, the evening promises to be a great experience. The ABC of animals includes alpacas, bees and chickens, but more recently they waved good bye to Gus the Gorilla who is now located on Novi Sad bridge in Norwich.

Gus the Gorilla was decorated by service users at Thornage Hallâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s day services for adults with learning disabilities and will stay in Norwich as part of the Go Go Gorilla trail over the summer. The resident alpacas however, will stay on the farm and will be on show for visitors to see at their annual September Garden fete.

Preparations for the garden fete are now well underway and Thornage Hall is looking for volunteers to help, as well as calling for local businesses who may be interested in having a stall at the event. Over 700 people are expected to attend the Fete where they will be able to see the Thornage alpacas Venus, Mavis, Vera and Pepe, take a guided walk around the farm, wander around a range of stalls from local businesses, as well as Thornage Hallâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own bio dynamic garden produce and

handmade art and craft products on sale. Entertainment for the day will be provided by local bands including East Coast and Trix and Stix, and there will be refreshments and a Barbeque selling Thornageâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own organic Beef Burgers.

Whilst driving into Norwich recently I was relating a tale pertinent to my passenger, but when I paused for her reaction, none came. Glancing across, I saw the reason why – she was texting, engrossed, thumbs busy on her mobile phone and she hadn’t heard a word I said.

Even more recently, five close family members who were visiting, sat with us to watch the FA Cup Final and failed to react when the Wigan goalkeeper brought off a stunning save. I turned round to see that, despite being football fans in varying degree, all five were occupied with their techno-gadgets, three on i-phones, one on a tablet and one using a laptop. Grumpy and his wife were alone in paying attention to the match at that moment.

May I suggest that the massive rise in so-called Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is directly linked to the concurrent rise in distraction overload presented by modern technology. The medical profession would have us believe ADHD is a form of affliction, an illness, and is busy prescribing bucketfuls of pills which affect the brain in an effort to bring about a ‘cure’.

When I started secondary school at the age of 11, on the first day of term I carried home

Creepy House Summer Reading Challenge There's a spine-tingling adventure waiting for children when they take part in the 2013 Summer Reading Challenge – Creepy House. They can join the adventure at any Norfolk library during the summer holidays. Pick up a pack and explore the Creepy house, discover its secrets and meet some of the hair-raising residents! Read six books and collect stickers that reveal the creepy residents of the house. All children who read six or more books will be presented with a medal and certificate to celebrate their achievement. Look out too for the Mungler Top Trumps cards to collect and swap with family and friends. Children can choose any books they like: fact books, stories, joke books or picture books. Audio books and e-books count as well, so long as they borrow them from a library. Cromer and District Garden Society

Members have had a busy couple of months. We were host to the annual quiz with our friends from the Sheringham and Hoveton societies and after a closely fought competition a team from Sheringham came out the winner. Nearly sixty took part in the quiz, a sign that the popularity of this annual event is as strong as ever.

A plant sale held to raise funds for the society was very well supported and we are now £190 better off as a result. Thanks are due to members who supplied the plants and helped on the day. Paul Metcalf spoke at our June meeting and his subject was soft fruit. He gave us many tips on how to get the best results for our efforts and it was encouraging to learn that virus free varieties of raspberries are available to help maximise yields and early varieties of strawberries mean that the season for this summer favourite is much longer. Given the vagaries of our weather at the moment any help we can get to make life easier is welcome!

Thirty members visited Elsing Hall Gardens near Dereham for the first of our summer outings. The hall itself is a late medieval gem of a building and proved to be a perfect backdrop for a spectacular garden. This garden is not normally open to the public but does open for special occasions from time to time so if you get a chance to visit this garden then please do so , you will not be disappointed.

National Blood Week smashes targets! A big thank you has been issued to donors and supporters after National Blood Week 2013 easily exceeded its targets.

The themed week, which ran from 10 June, aimed to educate the public about blood donation and register 10,000 new blood donors nationally.

And thanks to an overwhelming response from the public, NHS Blood and Transplant managed to smash that target and sign up almost 11,400 people.

NHS Blood and Transplant spokesperson Derek Carr said “We are delighted that National Blood Week had such a strong response and we are very grateful for all the support we had from our donors and the public which made it possible.

“It’s great that we were able to beat our national target and we hope that the people who registered in this area will now go on to be regular donors, which will help us maintain a steady supply of blood, as it has a short shelf life. However, the task does not finish here. We constantly need new donors – and in particular younger donors - to replace the 200,000 people nationally who have to retire from donating each year due to factors like poor health and certain medication, so I would urge people to keep coming forwards.

“Giving blood is easy, doesn’t take long to do and can help up to three people.”

During National Blood Week, which ran from

10-16 June, NHS Blood and Transplant aimed to increase understanding of the uses of blood and the donation process to encourage those who have never given blood before, or who have not given for some time, to ‘Know Blood, Give Blood’ and help save lives.

Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7st 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Firstly, an update on the two cats mentioned last time.

Millie, has now been re-homed with her fosterer who had grown very fond of her. Having recently lost her elderly dog she thought Millie was a suitable candidate to fill the gap in her household. Roger has also left for a new home, with a veterinary nurse who met him while his balance problem was being investigated. The ideal home for Roger as she is aware of his medical history and will be able to identify any changes to his condition. Lovely boy, lucky lad.

When Stephanie returned from holiday recently I had to confess that cat numbers had increased in our household but not with one from Cats Protection. For the past 10+ years we have had a “feral” cat visiting our garden, an unneutered black tom cat, who would not go anywhere near a cat trap. Last year we finally managed to catch him in a special cat box. This was made easier because his claws had started to dig into his pads and he could not move so quickly. He was neutered, had some teeth removed, claws clipped and antibiotics and returned to the garden after a night in the garage. Having survived the harsh winter out in the cold (although there are cat kennels available for shelter) we again noticed his claws were getting too long and another visit to the vets was arranged. A further dental was recommended and as he had finally begun to accept contact from us we were able to get him in a normal carrier for a further visit to the vets. This poor little lad had two abscesses in his mouth and a further 9 teeth removed. On his return from the vets we put him in the conservatory to recover and he has hardly left there since. After all these years he has finally learnt to trust people again, and is now a real lap cat that just loves a cuddle. It is obvious that at some point he did have a home and he probably got lost while looking for unneutered queens. Hector is now a permanent addition to our household, I just wish he could have made it indoors earlier.

Leader Tom FitzPatrick made a presentation to members of the Enterprise North Norfolk entrepreneur training programme on June 25th at a special event hosted by The Victorian Tea Rooms, Cromer, on Tuesday 25 June. This marked their success in setting up new businesses, ranging from historic tapestry restoration and conservation to insurance broking. The course leader - Kate Wilde from Engage with Business - was delighted with the success of her first 12 'graduates' of the course. Modules include business basics, mentoring and master classes in subjects such as market research and social media and are designed to

More ambulance cover in north Norfolk cautiously welcomed

North Norfolk Labour Party's Act on Ambulances campaigners have welcomed news of more ambulance cover in north Norfolk - 12 months after their petition against cuts started.

Over the last year the party have appealed to the East of England Ambulance Service board not to cut ambulance resource in Cromer and North Walsham, at a time when response times were already poor.

Over 10,000 people have signed their petition and the Trust undertook a series of u-turns which saw an increase in ambulance hours as performance worsened.

Now, staff at our local ambulance bases have won a battle against a reduction in services, as part of a formal grievance written in October 2011, meaning the NHS trust will now increase the number of double-staffed ambulance hours from 504 a week to 614 hours.

The move has been cautiously welcomed by the local Labour Party who met with the board last year to explain the fears of local residents and echoed staff concerns.

Denise Burke, spokesperson for the campaign, said "This is good news for the thousands of people who have signed the Act on Ambulances petition against cuts to double-staffed ambulances in north Norfolk. We applaud the unions and staff who have spent months fighting their formal grievance, and pushing for action. We hope that the Trust will stick to their word and ensure this measures take shape as soon as possible. If they do it will be good news for patients here."

CROMER HIGH STREET JOINS E-VOLUTION

Cromer’s online High Street, www.myhigh.st/cromer officially opened its digital doors last month. The first e-commerce town website in East Anglia, it features 15 independent shops and galleries with more than 1,100 hand-picked products for sale as well as profiles for local restaurants, cafés and businesses.

MyHigh.St allows bricks and mortar businesses within a town to offer their products and services on a single website.

MyHigh was launched eight months ago as a free-of-fee platform for independent retailers to sell through and to promote their home towns. Live High Streets include Wells in Somerset, Old City in Bristol and Stroud in Gloucestershire.

CROMER’S CHRISTMAS TREE 2013 Following the success of the Crab & Lobster Tree in 2012, ideas are being sought for the 2013 tree. Please send your suggestions to the Town Clerk.

CHRISTMAS EVENTS 2013 The Christmas Tree Festival and Nativity Festival will run from Wednesday 4th to Saturday 7th December 2013. Organisations wishing to display a tree or nativity are asked to contact the Town Clerk for further information. The Christmas Market will be held on Saturday 7th December 2013 with charity stalls in the church and trade stalls in the Parish Hall. Anyone wishing to book a stall is asked to contact the Town Clerk. The Christmas Lights Switch On event will be at 4.30pm on Saturday 7th December 2013. CEREMONIES AT NORTH LODGE We are liaising with the Registrars to arrange ‘Duo’ ceremonies. This provides the opportunity (weather permitting) to hold part of the ceremony outside in the walled garden overlooking the sea. The legal part of the ceremony must still take place in the Chamber inside North

Lodge which is licensed for marriage, civil partnership, renewal of vows and baby naming ceremonies. There is also now very limited availability for ceremonies to be held at 7pm. Cromer Marrams bowls Club

won 8 - 1 away at a very strong Cawston team. I am sure the team will regroup and hopefully will meet the challenge of Dilham Cross Keys, because folks that green will be a challenge. Also in the Federation League the Crows at home to Trunch lost 2 - 7 but had a very good win away at Blakeney RBL 7 - 2 The Hansells League team were away at Cawston and in a very tight match against another strong Cawston team managed a 3½ - 1½ win. In this game Portuguese John and Vice-Captain Bob were both using green bowls and Bob managed to use the wrong bowl!! He will get used to colour in time. The following week at home to County Arts a 3 - 2 win was recorded. This was so close to a full 5 points two rinks each losing one shot on the last end to lose. A third game, this time away against Holt, and the team managed to notch up another 3½ - 1½ win. This saw a very good recovery as all three rinks were trailing in the first few ends of the game. It was good to see Tom and Edna at the club house hoping to be playing again soon. The NANSA league team had the chance to play on the ‘interesting’ Dilham green. They lost 0 - 8. Neil had never seen anything like it and probably will not again. I understand the Dilham team are moving next year to another location so the pub green can be built on. So this will be the last year to experience the tricks and challenges.

We have two Presidents Days in the coming fortnight. Our Norfolk County Bowls Association, Ladies President Sue Ealden is inviting the Lady Presidents of all clubs in the county to the Marrams on Tuesday 23rd July. A games of bowls will be played followed by refreshments and

a raffle. There will also be a ‘Spider’ and all money raised on the day will go towards Sue’s Presidents Charity which this year is the PACT Animal Sanctury at Hingham. I hope the weather is good and a successful day is had by all.

Club President Mick Weddup is holding his Presidents Day on 14th July. He has planned a full men only rinks game and has invited a number of clubs to send representatives for the day. Prizes will be given for good performances by players and bottles of wine will I understand be given as prizes. Again we must all wish the weather supports Mick on this day.
