Raft Race and Tug of War competitions get Cromer in the Carnival spirit
Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent
Crowds lined Cromer seafront on Sunday 7 July to watch teams battle it out in Cromer Carnival’s Raft Race and Tug of War, which are seen as appetisers for the main Carnival celebrations.
On a hot and sunny Sunday three teams entered the Raft Race and were challenged to build a raft from barrels, wood and rope, paddle it around two buoys and make their way back to shore in the quickest time possible.
The annual event for the Carnival, which has been revived in recent years, got both tourists and locals into the Festival spirit.
The raft race was won for the fifth year in a row by Tiny Timothy Bateman’s 40th Birthday Tribute Team – captained by Tim Bateman from Cromer with Neil Coston, Liam Wade and Peter Skillen.

Little Theatre Curtain-raiser for new Probus Programme
Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club started off their new programme of talks on 2 July with a presentation about the Sheringham Little Theatre by Tony Nelson. Tony has played an important part in the theatre’s history himself and his narrative interwove the history of the theatre with that of the town itself. His performance of the story clearly demonstrated his passion for both and was enthusiastically applauded by the members and guests present. The vote of thanks was proposed by Mike Warner.
The new Club Chairman, Dave Vickery, is delighted with the speakers and subjects booked throughout his year in office, saying “I am extremely grateful to Tony and all of the others who will be giving up their time to prepare and deliver these talks. Most ask the club to make a charitable donation in lieu of a fee. We always invite them to join us for the lunch which enables them to get to know some of the audience before they present”.
Dave also expressed his intention to raise the local profile of Probus “Joining was extremely valuable to me when I moved into the area. As well as the fellowship, it gave me the opportunity to ask other members about what goes on in the vicinity and I found the talks on local subjects particularly informative. The programme of talks is designed to be relevant both to newcomers and established residents and some of the general topics have turned out to be far more interesting than I expected”.
Membership of the club is open to retired or nearly retired gentlemen and there is no requirement for members to live in either of the towns. Members meet on the first Tuesday of each month at the Links Hotel in West Runton for a chat in the bar before enjoying a 3-course lunch, coffee and then the talk.
Whilst membership is restricted to gentlemen, ladies may be invited for the December (Christmas lunch) and May meetings. A source said “this appears to work well for all concerned as the ladies enjoy those two events but look forward to some time without us through the rest of the year”.
Any gentleman who would be eligible to join is welcome to come to any of the meetings as a visitor, but it is essential to book at least a couple of days in advance on 01263 824306 so that the Lunch Secretary can advise the hotel of numbers. Calling also provides an opportunity to ask any questions and find out who to look out for at the hotel and when. The next meeting is on Tuesday 6 August and will feature a presentation on the history of Overstrand by Peter Stibbons, who has recently produced a DVD on that subject.

Tim said “we have won for the fifth year running, we are so lucky to have the Raft Race here on our own beach in Cromer. It’s great that it is organised every year and we hope we have entertained everyone!”
East Coast Customs Team was second in the race and Team Mo came third. The Tug of War was won by The Welly who beat Giovanni’s in the final pull. News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon With warmer weather forecast and the light evenings giving everyone time to enjoy their gardens I thought I would give you a great recipe for a great Barbecue Sauce.
Of course you could always leave the barbecue and come along to the White Horse and enjoy a superb meal, relax in our garden whole the children play. Don’t forget our charity car wash raising money for Nelson’s Journey on Saturday 27 July. We are serving Hot Bacon Rolls from 8am as well as our usual White Horse Breakfast so while the volunteers wash your car you can enjoy some good food and a chat. From 10am we will be offering a slice of delicious homemade cake and a coffee so if you missed breakfast you can still enjoy a snack while waiting for your car to be washed.
Our usual Bar and Restaurant Menu will also be available from 12noon, so why not make it lunch at the White Horse? Bring your friends and their cars and turn it into a car wash party! The Car Wash is just £5 per car with all proceeds going to the charity. Car Wash opens at 8am until 2pm

New Sanctuary Prayer Space at Cromer Academy
Earlier this month saw the opening of The Sanctuary prayer space, which has come about through input from Philosophy leaders and Fresh Air helpers. Sanctuary means ‘a place where people can seek refuge from their everyday concerns or worries’. And this is very much the idea behind the space, together with allowing students to explore prayer in creative ways. The thinking behind the space is mainly from a Christian perspective but it is accessible to all faiths.
Students have been exploring the space during Philosophy lessons. On arrival pupils have commented how peaceful the space is and is a place they can ‘chill out’ in. During their time in the space students have been moving around the 10 interactive prayer stations ranging from Mirrors – looking at identity, Stillness Pod, Thank you board and Area for Reflection. These stations are very interactive and have given students the opportunity to think deeply about their worries, concerns, questions and joys in life. It has been a pleasure to guide students around the space as they have treated it with respect and have been able to reflect deeply about what prayer is, which has prompted some great discussions.

Cromer Carnival takes to the air Earlier this month, Cromer Carnival took to the skies with the Wildcat Aerobatics Team ahead of their appearance at Cromer Carnival on Wednesday 21 August.
liveried biplanes performed a loop over the pier with Kate on board.
On a sunny Sunday 30 June the Wildcat Team flew from their base in Old Buckenham north to Cromer in a diamond formation. Flying with the team was Carnival volunteer Kate Royall who experienced first-hand exactly what the Wildcat display on 21 August will feel like. Flying alongside the team was Carnival volunteer Ady Woods in a RV8 photo-ship taking photos of the team in action over Cromer.
Al said “Kate was certainly getting a good understanding of the close proximity of the other aircraft and the effects of a 4G loop from low-level! Kate, who had until Sunday never flown in a small aircraft before, took front seat in one of the liveried biplanes with pilot Willie Cruickshank. She said “it was an absolutely incredible experience.
The team headed out to the coast at Weybourne at a height of around 1000ft before heading east to fly past Cromer pier in their diamond four pattern. Al went on to say “Of course, it’s customary to use smoke and at the call of “Smoke on, smoke on – GO, the smoke was turned on. The hundreds of people enjoying the early evening sun at Cromer could not have failed to notice it!
Kate went on to say “prior to take off I was both nervous and excited but the team soon put me at ease, and when I first got into the cockpit it really began to feel real! The flight up to north Norfolk was incredibly smooth and it was surreal to be so close to the other pilots! The photos taken from the air are spectacular and really reflect what the experience felt like, the coastline looked so beautiful.
Al Coutts from The Wildcats, who are East Anglia’s premier formation aerobatic display team, said “After a comprehensive briefing the Wildcats strapped themselves in and taxied out to runway 25 at Old Buckenham.
Flying at speeds in excess of 160mph in display the team then turned round and the formation changed from a diamond to swan before the two
Flying in a diamond formation from Old Buckenham to Cromer was a spectacular, I couldn’t quite believe how close the aircraft fly to each other, it really highlights the precise and astonishing skills of the pilots.
She said “I knew we would be doing a loop but had not been told when it would take place. After two runs over the pier, Willie told me we were

going into the loop next, I can’t begin to tell you how nervous I started to feel but as soon as the loop started there was nothing to do but sit back and enjoy it! The G-force did its job and I was able to enjoy the view from upside down, it was a totally unforgettable experience and I can’t wait to watch them over Cromer on Carnival Day.
Carnival Chairman Tony Shipp who was amongst the crowds on the ground said “those of us lucky enough to be on the seafront at Cromer on Sunday evening had a taste of the Wildcats Aerobatics Team. In just a short time they were able to demonstrate the skills, stunts and precision flying, which will be part of their display on Cromer Carnival Day, Wednesday 21 August. The Wildcats will provide the finale to the arena events on Carnival Day, performing at 4pm. The majesty of the iconic biplane coupled with the team's close formation aerobatic manoeuvres really makes them a must-see. They will follow aerial acts by the spectacular Blades at 12noon and The Princess of Wales Freefall Parachute Team - The Tigers at 2pm. Al from the Wildcats went on to say “it was a really fun afternoon. We are so looking forward to closing the carnival at Cromer next month! Be there if you can!

owners make is to get their pet neutered or we will take it back.
In a matter of days we have gone from having a reasonable number of kittens in care to having far too many, with lots more waiting to come in. The last two litters, totalling 10 kittens, arrived together with their mums, having been abandoned by their previous owners with the poor little mother cats having to fend not only for themselves but also their babies. In both of these instances other people cared enough to offer them shelter, contacted us to see whether we could possibly take them in and fed and looked after them until we had room. We have already had three other mums with four kittens each that arrived for the same reason and a further three young cats (and they really are not much more than kittens themselves) who have had kittens but not brought them out into the open yet. We do wonder why people get a pet when they are not prepared to look after them properly and abandon them without concern for their animal’s welfare. Fortunately they are still in a minority as most people act more responsibly. However, one thing we can be certain of is the fact they did not get them from us as one of the promises new
Other kittens have arrived from multi-cat households where the owners have let their cats breed and suddenly found they cannot cope with the numbers, and some where the kittens have been found with no mother in sight and the little ones have been too young to fend for themselves (three were even abandoned on a lady’s drive at one day old). We also see some where the owner contacts us because their cat has had kittens and they want to make sure they get good homes. Often the cat itself is very young and the owner has not been aware that she could become pregnant at such a young age. Cats can become pregnant from about 4 months old and can also have another litter while still feeding an existing one. We had experience of this last year when a young mum and her 9 week old kitten came into care, the kitten was re-homed and the next day mum produced another litter. I could provide lots more examples, but I won’t. However, I will just say, please get your cats neutered before you find you have a problem.

I see purple heather on the hill, Bright red poppies in the rye, The sun is shining brightly Against a clear blue sky. A thrush is eating berries In a Rowan tree, I get a little closer, He doesn’t notice me. The combines are busy, And making quite a dust, I must look for my paintbox, Painting nature is a must. I love to walk through the heather, On a warm summer’s day, The time goes so quickly when Good weather comes our way.

North Norfolk rental market buoyed by homeowners Rechenda Smith, Lettings Manager at members of the National Approved Lettings jumping ship According to figures released this week by the English Housing Survey, more people are quitting home ownership to become private tenants, than are leaving the private rented sector to become home owners.
The survey, which estimates a total of 22m homeowners in England moved into rented accommodation last year, stated that the number of owner-occupied homes fell from 14.8m in 2005/6 to 14.4m in 2011/12. At the same time, the number of privately rented households increased from 2.4m to 3.8m.
Harrisons said: “We are seeing a definite increase in homeowners coming off the housing ladder and moving into rented accommodation for a whole host of reasons. There are those who start off renting for a short period of time between house sales who like the hassle-free aspect of being a tenant and stay on, people going through relationship breakdowns who divide the funds and go into longterm rented accommodation, and retired people who sell their homes and use the funds as a nest egg to see out the rest of their days and want all maintenance issues to be dealt with by a landlord.”
The English Housing Survey underlines that home ownership levels have continued to drop as the number of households in private rented accommodation has grown.
Established in 2010, Harrisons are licensed
Scheme and rents and manages hundreds of rental properties across the region each month. Rechenda continued: “The rental market is significantly buoyant at the moment. For example, last month we rented a three bed semi detached property in Sheringham which sparked a bidding war – we did a full day of viewings, every applicant wanted to take it and it went for £100 above the asking price over a three year tenancy. This is fairly unusual in the world of lettings but as demand outstripping supply, anything goes. We also had our record number of move-ins last month, with a high proportion of applicants coming out of the housing ladder, attracted to the convenience of renting rather than home owning.”

North Norfolk Foreshore Team ready for the summer!
As temperatures rise along the north Norfolk coast, the North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) Foreshore team is gearing up for what they hope will be the busy summer season ahead.
Michael Clarke, a member of the NNDC Foreshore team for ten years, and David Rigby, a relative newcomer with just two years to his name, have the enviable task of patrolling the district’s seaside promenades at Sheringham and Mundesley (Michael), and Cromer (David), helping, advising and supporting everyone having a day out at the coast.
The jobs of the Foreshore team, which has been in existence since the early 1990’s, include overseeing NNDC’s seaside chalet lettings, checking the condition of the proms, working closely with the three towns’ RNLI Lifeguards, and monitoring the cleanliness of their promenade ‘patches’.
NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Corporate Assets, Rhodri Oliver, said, “The North Norfolk coast is unbeatable at any time of year and we want to ensure that everyone enjoys their visit to our coastal towns. Few places in the country can match North Norfolk’s performance on cleanliness and our promenades are the envy of most. Our Foreshore team is there to help and assist, and to check that everything is as everyone would expect, and they do a wonderful job.”
One regular issue they have to deal with is inconsiderate dog owners who allow their dogs to foul public areas, although this problem is diminishing as NNDC’s on-going ‘No Messing’ campaign, which tells dog-owners in no uncertain terms to ‘pick it up or face a fine’, begins to take effect.
A Seaside Café offering a warm welcome throughout the year. Serving traditional breakfasts, classic cafe food, homemade cakes and excellent coffee too. Cromer crab salads and sandwiches now available. Open Monday to Saturday from 10am 10% discount for NHS staff
The café is now operating a loyalty card scheme for all customers 11 High Street, Cromer NR27 9HG

Another is general behaviour on the proms, particularly in the busy summer months. All three proms provide the opportunity for visitors and local residents to enjoy themselves by the sea and they can be crowded with families, especially in the school holidays. Michael and David are keen to encourage people to have fun, that’s what visiting the seaside is all about, but this should not be at the expense of the enjoyment of others, so while cycling, skateboarding and other sports are welcome on the proms, they will always try to make sure that anyone engaged in these or any other activities is behaving appropriately and respecting other people’s enjoyment of the space.

North Norfolk beach huts and chalets – get 25% off weekly hire
Following a very successful promotion in the spring, North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is to once again reduce the prices of its seaside beach huts and chalets in the autumn.
Having a base by the sea makes spending time at the beach so much easier, whether you use it to store beach essentials, as a place to get changed after a dip, or just want to shelter with a flask and a book from bracing breezes. And NNDC is giving local residents and visitors the opportunity to enjoy a seaside beach hut or chalet at a special 25% discount rate this autumn.
01263 515545
NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Corporate Assets, Rhodri Oliver, said, “Our fabulous resort beaches are always busy and we rarely have enough beach huts or chalets available to satisfy demand in the main summer holiday period. But earlier and later in the year we usually have a few vacancies. This year we thought it would be better to make them available at a lower price, so that they could all be used and enjoyed by more people. I hope lots of people will be able to take up this very special offer.
“The spring beach hut and chalet offer was a great success, bringing much enjoyment for local people and visitors, along with welcome additional income for the council. I really hope as many people will feel able to take advantage of the autumn discount.”
Subject to availability, the special offer applies to weekly lets of beach huts and chalets in Mundesley, Sheringham and Cromer from 6 September to1 November.

Have your say on nuisance marketing calls says Norman Lamb MP
North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb is urging people to respond to an inquiry into nuisance telephone marketing calls.
Parliament’s Culture, Media and Sport Committee is planning to hold an inquiry into Nuisance Telephone Calls and Text Messages. Unwanted marketing messages can be received by telephone or text message. Together with abandoned, including silent, telephone calls, these have led to many complaints to Members of Parliament.
“There are rules to regulate this sort of activity but many people feel those rules are being abused. Even my office number in North Walsham gets automated calls asking if we want to make a claim for a refund of Payment Protection Insurance!” says Mr Lamb.
Ofcom and the Information Commissioner’s Office both have regulatory and enforcement responsibilities. The Telephone Preference Service allows individuals to have their telephone number removed from relevant marketing lists. The Culture, Media and Sport Committee has decided to hold an inquiry into nuisance telephone calls and text messages, focusing on the current regulatory system and its enforcement, the effectiveness of the Telephone Preference Service and practical measures by communications service providers to curtail such communications.
Submissions have to be made in writing (in Word format) by e-mail to cmsev@parliament.uk and should have ‘Nuisance calls’ in the subject line. Submissions should be received by Thursday 15 August 2013.

Cromer Carnival Children’s Weeks are nearly here!
Cromer Carnival will soon be kicking off its main celebrations with the first of two Children’s Weeks before the main carnival week which runs 17-23 August this year.
The festivities begin on Monday 5 August and continue through to Friday 16 August with bumper crowds expected to turn out to take part in over 20 events beginning with the Sandcastle Competition and ever popular Chalk on the Prom.
Many of the Children’s Weeks favourites return with the Treasure Dig, Paint a Stone, Scavenger Hunt, Sand Sculptures, Crab Catching, Paint a Crab Shell and the fabulous Tide Fight.
The year sees the addition of two new activities as part of Children’s Weeks. On the last day,
Friday 16 August, the first ever Duck Race off the Pier will take place. Ducks will be available to buy on the morning of the event and after launching off the pier the winner will be the first duck to reach breakwaters east of the pier. Later that day Children’s Weeks will be rounded off with a picnic and Party on the Pier.
Organisers of Children’s Weeks Tony West and Libby Clohisey said “We’re really looking forward to this year’s events which will finish with a Party on the Pier. After our first ever Duck Race off the Pier families can bring their own picnic and enjoy Punch & Judy, a magic show, games and a disco on the Pier Forecourt.”
Carnival Sleepytime Steam Train
The North Norfolk Poppy Line Railway is putting on a special train during carnival week. The Sleepytime train for children will run early evening on Friday 9 August from Sheringham to Holt and back. It promises to be an evening of great fun and games finished off with storytellers singing songs and reading bedtime stories. When they reach Mr Sandman’s Station the children will be welcomed by some of his helpers and will be given a sprinkling of sleeping dust on their way home, as well as a bedtime cookie and drink.
Tony Shipp, Chairman of the Carnival said
“Children’s Weeks are an established part of the run up to Cromer Carnival Week. Two weeks of activities for children and all the family.”
He went on to say “Libby and Tony have a great team of helpers to welcome you. Most of the activities are on the promenade, beach and pier and range from the traditional sandcastles and crab catching to painting crab shells and treasure hunts. The local families and regular visitors to Cromer already know what a great time is to be had. If you're visiting Cromer for the first time go along, you'll be made really welcome. It's two weeks of free fun and entertainment with lots of prizes to be won too!"
So, pop on your PJs and grab your favourite teddy or other animal and hop aboard the Sleepytime Steam Train.
Pre-booking is essential. Tickets (£5 per child and accompanying adult goes free. Additional adult £5) are available from Starlings Toymasters, both in Sheringham and Holt.

'Protect Our Post' campaign launched to save Royal Mail from privatisation Denise Burke, chair of North Norfolk Labour
North Norfolk residents are being encouraged to call on government ministers to halt the sale of Royal Mail, through a new campaign launched earlier this month.
Protect Our Post is the latest campaign in a growing national movement which speaks out against the government’s proposals to sell off our country’s postal service.
Campaigners fears that the consequences of the privatisation of Royal Mail will be dire for rural areas such as north Norfolk, with services potentially being limited or stopped in our villages, isolating our increasing elderly population who cannot travel to nearby towns. Already the firm is being “fattened up” by increasing prices to push up profits ahead of its sale.
Cromer Town Councillor Jen Emery and North Walsham Town Councillor David Spencer at a 'Protect Our Post' street stall.
North Norfolk Labour Party, who are behind the campaign, have been on the streets of north Norfolk talking to shoppers about what is happening to one of our country’s most-valued assets. They are inviting residents to sign the online petition at www. protectourpost.com, and will be on the The ever-popular streets with more Cromer Carnival Clay stalls in the coming Pigeon Shoot took weeks. place in Cromer at the end of last month.
NORFOLK’S VIBRANT ART GALLERY AND GIFT SHOP
Party, said “There is a growing momentum speaking out against the government’s plans for the sell-off of Royal Mail across the country, and we are pleased to be playing our part in north Norfolk. We believe these plans will be particularly dire for north Norfolk, a rural area with an increasing elderly population, because the services in the villages that do not make a profit are likely to be the first to go. Already the company is being fattened up by increasing the costs of postal services, and we fear this will continue to rise after privatisation.
These plans, which were supported by our MP in his previous role as minister for postal affairs, are continuing to gather pace and we fear Royal Mail will be sold before the end of the year. This is why we are asking residents to register their anger online or through our postcards at our street stalls."
Cromer Carnival Clay Pigeon Shoot
The shoot, which is one of the first events of the 2014 Carnival, has become a staple event in the Carnival’s calendar which is now in its 44th year.
On a warm and sunny Sunday 109 entrants took part with 51 guns through before 12noon. First with 38 hits out of 40 was Mr David Pointer, who received the £100 prize.
There were three participants with 35 hits of out 40 who shared second and third prizes and received £25 pound each. They were Silas, D. Wilson and David Steed.
The Gallery Norfolk offers a wide selection of art, crafts and gifts – with a special focus on the sea, nature and Norfolk.

LADY PRESIDENT FOR LOCAL ROTARY CLUB
Trisha Williams is the new President of Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club. She took over the reins on 3 July from Peter Stibbons and is only the third lady President in the Club’s 75 year history. Husband, John, a Rotarian for 43 years, was elected senior Vice-President with Alan Howe becoming junior Vice-President. Trisha, a native of east London, moved to North Norfolk with husband John in 2000 after spending over 50 years in Essex. In Norfolk, she initially joined North Walsham Rotary Club before transferring to Cromer and Sheringham three years ago. With John’s earlier involvement in Round Table and Rotary, Trisha quickly became enmeshed with Ladies’ Circle and then Inner Wheel. As a member of Chingford Inner Wheel she served as Club Secretary, President and, subsequently, London District Secretary. She continued her membership of Inner Wheel after moving to Great Bardfield, also in Essex. Here, she took up amateur dramatics becoming the Group’s chairman, a position she held until moving to Norfolk. She and John have been married for nearly 53 years and have a son,
Three Good Years
Mark, two grandchildren, and a great grandchild. “This year we shall be concentrating on greater interaction with the local community and so our fund-raising priorities will be local good causes and the RNLI – both in Cromer and Sheringham” said President Trisha. “Equally, we are very much a social group which combines service with fellowship. And, as a growth operation and the mother of service clubs in North Norfolk, in this our 75th year, are looking to increase our numbers still further”. “Rotary is not a knife and fork club, nor does one have to be affluent to become a member- just the need to have a rich heart and mind” she concluded.

Reply to Grumpy Old Man,
May I just say how offended I was by your Grumpy Old Man column in your latest issue.
What a judgemental, ill informed load of rubbish. Particularly about mental health being an excuse - how on earth would he know how it feels to be so unfortunate as to suffer from this?
My own daughter, aged four, has learning problems and she is a bright little girl. Mental illness, and I include ADHD are a horrific illness and one which should not be berated.
This article belittles these illnesses and the stigma associated that nowadays health professionals are trying to eradicate. Yours sincerely, Name & address supplied
Dear Margaret,
The need for voluntary community transport services to take local people to medical appointments is increasing at ever greater speed, partly because of cutbacks in the NHS own in-patient transport, but also because of reductions in public transport. At NNCT (North Norfolk community Transport) the number of requests for our mediride service has doubled in the last year. We have been able to respond to most of these because we have also been able to recruit more volunteer drivers, but demand is still outpacing supply. We serve a wide area, alongside some other community car schemes, covering most of North and North-east Norfolk. The users of these services are massively grateful for the service provided as often there is no way of getting to their appointments by means that are remotely affordable or even available. The patient pays 42p a mile directly to the volunteer driver to cover the driver’s expenses.
If any reader could find some time to help with this service, no matter how occasionally, both NNCT and our service users would be immensely grateful. To find out more phone us on either 01263 839009 or 01692 500840, or email us admin@btconnect.com These same phone numbers and email address are equally relevant if any reader is in need of this service. Likewise, they can be used if anyone requires our dial-a-bus or group transport services to get out for shopping or to group meetings or outings. Yours faithfully, Mollie Whitworth (NNCT Trustee)
Dear Margaret,
Cromer Library is running a children’s Summer Reading Challenge from 27 July.
To link in with this the library will help me with my fundraising efforts for Quidenham (East Anglian Childrens Hospices).
I need small gift bags, new or used, which I will fill and then sell to raise money for Quidenham. Any donations of bags can be left at the library. Thank you, Maureen Dewhurst

Reply to Grumpy Old Man,
Grumpy old man indeed. More like ignorant old fool.
How dare you judge and criticise that which you, clearly, know nothing about.
In 2005 I was blessed with a seemingly healthy and happy baby boy, but as he grew it was apparent that he had various learning and behavioural issues. My very bright, very sweet little boy was diagnosed with ADHD as well as other learning issues.
He suffers tics, uncontrollable outbursts, severe anxiety and an inability to differentiate between fiction and reality amongst various other symptoms of this neurological disorder. You will never truly know the hardship and difficulty involved with caring for a child like this, and therefore you are not fit to judge it! ADHD is NOT an excuse for laziness or bad behaviour! Nor is it in any way convenient!! I can assure you sir, that my son is not constantly in front of the idiot box or games consoles, preferring family walks, reading, cooking and playing in the garden with his younger brother. In addition to your ignorance in this issue it is clear you are suffering 'in my day' syndrome.
Life has changed, science and technology has advanced. Of course you didn't play xbox in your day! I very much doubt that they existed at that time!
If you took your blinkers off you'd see a large majority of local children being actively involved in Scouts/Cubs, sports clubs etc. On top of which the children are furiously fighting for a skate park (an outdoor activity!) and a lift on the ban of scooters and skates on the promenade, which appeared without notice, robbing the children of another place to enjoy. What is next? A ban on buckets and spades?!
My message to you is simple. Keep your ignorant and obnoxious comments to yourself until you have all the facts. I sincerely hope you never have to live through the hardship of having a child with mental or learning difficulties, but then if you had, I guarantee that you would never have put pen to paper. Name and address supplied
P.S. I would suggest that your 'passenger' was either very rude (not differently abled), or you were just boring.

Due to the last minute cancellation of our speaker we enjoyed some in-house entertainment of anecdotes and stories given by some of the members. We were all agreed that the recent visits to Ely Flower Festival and True’s Yard Museum in Kings Lynn were a great success and enjoyed by all who went. There was so much to see that we will be planning further trips in the future. Thanks were given to Irene Nutt who opened her garden and provided a Strawberry Tea. It was a beautiful day and the garden was filled with chattering ladies – a good time was had by all. We discussed further events such as

a garden party at How Hill, a visit to the Theatre Royal to see Evita and a Posh Frocks evening we are having at the hall in August. It will be a chance for us to get dressed up and have a buffet meal with music playing in the background. Two of our members are doing the catering and our President’s husband will be providing the music.
Our competition this month was for a perfect rose and we had plenty of entries. They created a wonderful aroma and the best rose was won by Pat Fisher for her lovely red rose. We do not have a meeting in August so we will return in September. New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2.30pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street.

St. Peter’s Church in Sheringham was the venue for a meeting of clergy and lay people who had come to listen to representatives of the ‘Churches Together’ initiatives which are currently active in Sheringham, Cromer and the surrounding districts. The meeting heard about diverse and thriving projects including the following. -
The bereavement Support Group is based at the Salvation Army Citadel in Sheringham. The group provides an opportunity for a bereaved person (of any age,) to visit the Citadel on Friday mornings between 10 am – 12 noon. If you visit the group you don’t need to say anything about your loss until you are ready to do so. You can just sit and have a chat over coffee until you feel able to discuss how you feel. When you’re ready to talk about your loss– there will be someone who will listen and be ready to help you. The telephone phone number for the Bereavement Support Group is 07900382186.
Operation Christmas Child is a local initiative that contributes to the work of a national charity known as the Samaritan’s Purse. The purpose of Operation Christmas Child is to provide shoe boxes filled with gifts which are sent to vulnerable children throughout the world. Churches across the town and beyond participate in this appeal which is headed by the Salvation Army. To

The Sheringham beach Life adventure will take place again this year between 27th August and 30th August. It is a very popular event which gives very young children through to fifteen year olds the opportunity to come together for games, activities and competitions. (The Youth Night caters for eleven to eighteen year olds.) If you want to find out more about the timetable for this year’s event visit www.sheringhambeachlife.co.uk or email - info@sheringhambeachlife.co.uk
Friends International in Norwich is a Christian group with a local link in Sheringham. One of its objects is to find hosts for international students studying at UEA. The hosts will offer students occasional opportunities for hospitality and friendship. statistics for the charity’s first year of operation in and around Cromer and Sheringham. There are more than sixty trained, registered volunteers drawn from local communities and churches. The number of people who have been allocated food since last August is in excess of eleven hundred people. The donations (in cash and kind) received are in excess of thirteen tonnes, (the money equivalent is approximately £22,000.) Public support for this project has been amazing! Please continue to give generously to the very needy living in our community. For more information about food/money donation, food entitlement and collection days and times telephone 07826 376343. (Monday to Saturday 10am-5pm.) or visit www.cromerdistrict.foodbank.org.uk

postscript : Another charitable organisation which doesn’t come under the ‘Churches Together’ initiative but which is nevertheless non-denominational is ‘Christian Solidarity Worldwide.’ Its aim is to seek justice for those who wish to practise Christianity. Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights says that people have the right to practise openly the religion of their choice. Cromer Marrams bowls Club
mixed league were up for a challenge at Dilham Cross Keys but despite all their best efforts they could not pull off a win and lost 0-9. Captain John soon had his team firing on all cylinders however and they took revenge for the earlier defeat against Sheringham Morley and scored a 9-0 win. Cromer Crows in the same competition found it difficult at home to Overstrand and lost 2-7. Following that, away to Mundesley, they suffered a similar 2-7 defeat. Big David thought he had been to Mundesley previously when he set out from home to play, so arrived via Blakeney. Captain Roger of the NANSA team, who I can tell you some years ago competed in a Space Hopper race down the main street where he lived, may well be getting his team together for a bonding session after their brilliant 6-2 win against Holt Swallows. His wife was so pleased she went for a paddle in the sea. However unfortunately they could not keep up the good work and lost to Overstrand 0-8. The following week week the team were away against local rivals Suffield Park and despite a good start again lost 0-8. New to the 'wrong bias' club are Big David, Magyar Les and EBA Captain Graham. Les on a morning 'roll up' turned up in a brand new white trilby. Not very good on our windy green, it soon blew away and over the cliff top. We think he may attach some elastic to go under his chin. Tom however retrieved it for him. Neil is back after a weekend when he returned home to Glasgow. He so enjoyed his time that he ended up in a bunker on a golf course when taking a short cut home. Wearing his best suit as well.
Tales from the Bowling Green ...
... and the Wednesday evening Hansells team have continued with two more very good results.
At home against Reepham Nomads a 4-1 win was recorded and then another home game saw Cromer pitted against the League leaders Fakenham. A really impressive game saw the team being successful with a 5-0 win. Richard was last to finish - as usual. Why is that?? The Cromer Crabs in the Federation County League

The club is very pleased to host a Norfolk County Ladies County game against Leicestershire on Friday 16th August. Our Norfolk Bowls Association Ladies President,
Susan Ealden will welcome the teams onto he green and be looking for a good result from her representative team. President Mick had a very successful Presidents Day. With club members and supporting players from Suffield Park BC and R G Carter BC put into rinks of four, two games one of 10 ends and a second of 11 ends were played. All rinks kept their own scores and bottles of wine were given to the overall winners. Two spiders were played and two small bottles of wine were given to the first 12 players who scored 'chalkers'. Portuguese John organised an Australian Pairs Competition for the ladies of the club on their Ladies Day but on the day they were three ladies short so some of our men kindly took up the challenge and became Joanne, Davina and Petra for the afternoon. No prizes for guessing who they were but club members might like to try and guess. And so I move on to the forthcoming games that you may wish to come along and support. With the various leagues coming to an end the number of games reduce considerably. Friday 26th July 2.00pm Holt Swifts: NANSA League game Tuesday 30th July 2.00pm Sunderland and District BC: two rinks ladies
Tuesday 30th July 6.45pm Cromer Crows v Reepham Town: Federation League game Wednesday 31st July 2.00pm Norfolk BC: ladies triples game
Saturday 3rd August 2.00pm Sproughton BC: mixed rinks game
Friday 16th August 2.00pm Norfolk v Leicestershire: Ladies County game Peter Bird, 01263 512120
Guests cycle from Ottendorf in Germany to attend Rotary Handover meeting in North Norfolk
Special guests attended the Handover meeting of the Rotary Club of North Norfolk held at The Dales, Upper Sheringham earlier this month. Hubert Grunding, the President of the Ottendorf Rotary Club, which is twinned with the North Norfolk club, together with five other representatives of the German club attended the meeting to see the Presidency handed over from Denise Lattaway to the new President John Gibson. Rainer Pannier has been elected as the senior Vice President. John, who lives at Roughton has been a long standing member of the club and is well L-R Rainer Pannier, John Gibson, known in the area, having run Gibson’s Butchers in Denise Lattaway Cromer for many years. The North Norfolk Club which normally meets on Monday evenings moved the meeting to Thursday to accommodate their German guests who had cycled to Norfolk from Ottendorf on a fund raising trip.
