Cromer Promenade Petition to NNDC
Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent
A petition calling for the ban on cycling, scooting and skating on Cromer promenade to be lifted was delivered to the North Norfolk District Council last month. A lively group assembled outside the Council Offices in Cromer on the gloriously sunny afternoon of Wednesday 17 July. At 4.30pm, the group were met by a small delegation from the District Council, and they handed over a copy of the petition, which has been signed by more than 340 people.

Cromer Promenade Petition to NNDC
Continued from front cover... A spokesperson for the group explained ‘The petition was launched last winter, in response to the council having placed notices along the promenade announcing ‘No cycling, rollerblading, skateboarding or scooter riding on the promenades or access slopes’. On every notice, above these words, was a ‘Cycling prohibited’ road sign. In early June, presumably in response to rapidly growing support for the petition, the Council pasted new text over the top of the existing wording on the notices. The new text reads ‘Cycling / skateboarding that may be considered hazardous to other promenade users is prohibited’. On every notice, the ‘Cycling prohibited’ road sign remains in place’. The meeting was polite and good natured, but supporters believe they got their point across. The Council delegation was keen to assure that the ban has been lifted. However, the group made it clear that they think further action is required. Members of the group were able to provide the Council delegation with first-hand accounts of their attempts to cycle on the promenade since the signs were altered, and of abuse they have received from other users as a result. The group feel that at present, the wording on the notices is confusing and off-putting, and the ‘Cycling Prohibited’ road signs render them nonsensical. One notice, directly in front of the pier, still reads ‘No cycling on promenade’. No wonder users of the promenade are confused! They argue that if the council has indeed lifted the ban then this needs to be made clear on the promenade itself. Until the notices were erected last winter, pedestrians, cyclists, scooter users and skaters all managed to share the promenade very amicably. The group welcome the Council’s assurance that the ban has been lifted. However, what is required now is that this be spelled out down on the promenade. ‘The current notices are unnecessarily negative, telling off particular groups of users who have done nothing wrong. But worst of all, they are thoroughly confusing. We believe they should be removed before they lead to even more serious disputes between promenade users. If the Council insists on having notices, then let’s furnish them with a clear and friendly message that encourages the safe and considerate use of the promenade by everybody. Gorleston and Great Yarmouth councils have both lifted long-standing bans on their esplanades this year, and have done so very openly. In each case, the move was widely welcomed. We should like to see our own council benefit from the same kind of positive publicity these two councils received. The delegation assured us that the council will review the signage within the next couple of weeks. We await their findings with great interest.
Road Safety - Older Driver Refresher
Lessons Benefit All - Institute of Advanced Motoring
The IAM welcomed the 2010 RAC report on Motoring, which finds 84% of drivers aged 70 or over acknowledge the value of refresher driving lessons.
Neil Greig IAM Director said, "with ever growing numbers of older drivers looking to stay safe, and maintain independence, it is encouraging to see there is a high degree of support for refresher courses."
According to RAC Foundation 63% of all trips made by the over 70s are by car either as a driver or passenger and no less than 53% of the over 70s hold a driving licence.
Jennifer Bailey aged 70 from Sheringham decided to have some refresher lessons, with Sylvia's School of Motoring. Jenny says, "since losing my husband Graham last year, I hadn't driven for 15 years, so feeling unsure of my safety & skills. After a couple of lessons with Sylvia checking my various skills like mirrors. Positioning, observation and gears. I decided that I would get an automatic car, which again Sylvia assisted me with. We also covered parking & various other aspects."
"I now have my freedom back , I now drive to Felbrigg/Sheringham with my dog Daisy, and feel safe & more confident. Having these lessons have given me a new lease of life and would recommend anyone to do this, to stay safe on our busy roads."

David Hodson takes over the kitchens at the Grove
Local lad David Hodson takes the reins with a brief to grow the Grove’s reputation off the back of a prestigious AA Dinner Award achieved earlier in the year.
Born in France, David was raised and educated in Norfolk. He worked under Gordon Ramsay at the Aubergine in London, has launched restaurants in Selfridges and Harvey Nicks, and has decades of experience working in Rosette and Michelin starred restaurants all over the world, as well as cooking for private households including two overseas royal families and HRH the Prince of Wales.
Now David is looking to return to his roots and produce high-quality, locally-sourced food in the beautiful suroundings of the Grove, tucked away on Overstrand Road.
“Norfolk has been calling me for years, but I was just waiting for the right opportunity to come back home”, David said. “The Grove is an incredible place, owned by the same family for nearly eighty years and full of history and charm, and I fell in love with it as soon as I walked through the door. The potential here is considerable. We are lucky enough to have
the best coastline amazing shellfish; Cromer crab and lobster as well as fresh line-caught fish, and a wonderful farming heritage seeing a real revival with pork, beef and poultry some of the best in the country. We use as much fresh produce - grown in the Grove gardens by John and Ann Graveling - as possible, so we have a winning combination.
“We have lots of diverse activities planned – we’re already working with About with Friends, a super local charity, who provide our afternoon teas – and I’m very excited about what we can do here. It’s great to find a house and family keen to take things forward, and as we develop and grow the aim is to become one of the top five restaurants in Norfolk.”
did a wonderful job getting us off the ground and transforming the place from a B&B to a fully-functioning restaurant, and we’re now looking to David to build on those foundations and really give the Grove a healthy dash of experience and quality,” he said. “We’re aware that customers nowadays are incredibly particular about where they go out and we are keen to try to live up the reputation of North Norfolk in general as a terrific place to eat.”

Is your family ready for the National Trust’s north Norfolk coast 50 things adventure?
Suc
The National Trust is challenging families to have a go at a series of exciting and fun activities along the north Norfolk coast during this year’s summer holidays.
The Trust’s Norfolk Coast team has put together a list of the top five things to do at each of the special places it cares for along the coast, from Brancaster Beach and Brancaster Staithe in the west to Friary Hills and Blakeney Point in the east.
Activities include Fly a Kite at Brancaster Beach, Make a Mud Pie at Stiffkey Marshes, Track Wild Animals at Morston Quay and Hunt for Fossils and Bones at Blakeney Point.
Alex Green, a National Trust learning officer at the Brancaster Millennium Activity Centre (BMAC), which specialises in outdoor activities for kids, said:
“We care for some of the most special places on the north Norfolk coastline and they are very popular with families, both those living here and those enjoying a holiday. To help kick-start some family adventures we have created a fun and informative little guide to enable them to get more out of their time together on the coast and visit other places they maybe didn’t know about.”
The activities are drawn from the Trust’s hugely popular 50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾. And it’s good news for anyone on a budget - Many of the activities are free or low cost.
“Our guide is full of activity ideas as well as hints and tips of what to wear or what to look out for, plus it has a handy map showing all the locations along the way,” added Miss Green. “So whether whatever you want to do, the guide will help you make the most out of your trip to the seaside.”
Those wanting an even greater challenge can also try things like kayaking, raft building or a muddy harbour ramble exploring Brancaster’s creeks and wildlife. There will be a charge of between £5 and £10 for these additional activities.

WHEN CAN I ACCESS MY NEIGHBOUR’S LAND? by Stephanie Connor, Solicitor with Hayes + Storr
Sometimes it may be necessary for you to go on to your neighbour’s land in order to repair your house, or to remove a tree which has become dangerous and unstable and needs chopping down.
The most straightforward way to do this is to simply ask your neighbour for their permission to gain access to their land. You may need to arrange for the works to be done at a time to suit your neighbour. It is always advisable to try to remain on good terms with your neighbour if possible.
If however, your neighbour refuses you access to their land then there are steps you can take. The Access to Neighbouring Land Act 1992 gives the right for you to access neighbouring land for the purpose of ‘carrying out basic preservation works’ to your property. These works include the maintenance and repair of a building, repair of drains, sewers or cables, filling in or clearing a ditch or tree felling if the tree is dead, diseased or dangerous. The Act’s reference to ‘preservation’ means that it is unlikely to be of use if you wish to build something new, such as an extension.
To utilise the Act you need to be granted a right of access by applying to the County
Court. A Court fee will be payable.
The Court will decide whether the works are reasonably necessary and whether they would be very difficult to carry out without access to neighbouring land. The Court Order will state exactly what work is to be carried out, when and where it will take place and might also provide for you to pay compensation to your neighbour for any loss or damage.
The Court could decide to refuse access if it believes it would cause hardship to your neighbour or significantly interfere with their enjoyment of their own land.
Once a Court Order has been obtained, you will then be able to access your neighbour’s land but you must only do the works specifically authorised under the Order. “This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club
Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club has made donations to 12 charitable causes during the year to 30 June 2013 totalling £1680.50.
Most benefactors were local, the largest donation being to the President’s chosen charity, Norfolk & Norwich Association for the Blind who received £600.
The Club was able to make these donations through its fundraising activities which included street and store collections in the area, car boot sales, a stall at Wells Summer Fayre, Quiz and Chips evenings, darts throw competitions and an Easter egg hunt. Our sincere thanks to those who have supported our efforts, for without this support, none of this would be possible.
ALDIS MOTORS LTD
It is somewhat gratifying to have achieved this success as it was the Club’s first year in existence. This was at a time when the building of the Club was taking place and, whilst some would have heard of the Lions organisation, no-one would have heard of this particular Club. We have, until now, been a branch of the Taverham & District Lions Club as, until we have 20 members, we cannot be a stand-alone Club.

GOSH Charity Event Success
A Great Ormond Street Hospital charity event held on 13 July at The Links Hotel, West Runton was a great success raising ÂŁ1,358.42 for the charity. This could pay for a recliner chair/sofa for parents to stay with their child at GOSH, or two new playrooms within the hospital, or 135 overnight stays for parents at the hospital hotel Weston House.
Children were entertained by surprise Disney guests, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and there were over 175 raffle prizes. Organisers would like to say big thank you to local and national businesses for donating and supporting the charity event, and everyone who attended. They are now considering holding another charity for Great Ormond Street Hospital next summer, saying ‘as a GOSH family we know how much of a difference this money will make to so many families’ The Woodland Trust and North Norfolk District Council are inviting people from across the region to the second Pretty Corner Summer Festival on Thursday 22 August between 10:30am and 4pm. Last year’s event attracted over 600 visitors and this year’s is expected to be bigger and better.

Woodland Trust Site Manager Michael Ryder, said: “We had a great turnout last year and we’re looking forward to welcoming more people this summer. It’s a great chance to see how we’re working with the council to make the woods an even more interesting place to visit and take part in some fun activities on the day too.

Prestigious Green Flag hoisted again at Holt Country Park and Sadler’s Wood, and now also at Pretty Corner Holt Country Park and Sadler’s Wood have again been named amongst the best open spaces in the UK, winning the right to fly the prestigious Green Flag for 2013/14 and now they have been joined by the most aptly named Pretty Corner. It is the ninth year in a row that Holt Country Park, which, like the other two winners, is run by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), has earned a Green Flag for being welcoming, safe, clean and well-managed. In 2005, the country park was the first in Norfolk to win a Green Flag - an award that demands year-on-year improvement for the status to be retained. Holt Country Park was joined by Sadler’s Wood, just outside North Walsham, when it achieved a Green Flag last year, and this year they have been joined by another area of excellent open space in North Norfolk, Pretty Corner Woods near Sheringham. Pretty Corner has been awarded a Green Flag on its very first application, which is unusual and a clear acknowledgement of the excellent work that is being carried out by NNDC staff and dedicated local volunteers. The three sites are among a record-breaking 1,447 parks and green spaces that received a prestigious Green Flag Award at the end of last month.
John Lee, NNDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said “North Norfolk has a host of beautiful open spaces. But Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood and Pretty Corner Woods are up there with the best of our countryside. Our staff take great care in looking after them, while many groups make use of them and also take part in their conservation and management. Congratulations to everyone whose dedication has paid off, with the recognition that Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood and Pretty Corner Woods are three of the best free open spaces in the country.” The national award, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to visitors that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities. Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd said: “We are thrilled to announce yet another record-breaking year for Green Flag Award parks and green spaces. A Green Flag Award provides national recognition for the hard work and dedication of all the parks managers, staff and volunteers who have helped to create these fantastic

This month we had a workshop with Ann Colby who demonstrated how to make an upright arrangement using carnations and roses. This was later replicated by the ladies present. Ann was very helpful in assisting the novice arrangers amongst us. No meeting in August as we shall once again be decorating Cromer Carnival Queen’s float. Our next meeting will be on Monday 16 September at 7.30pm at Cromer Junior School with Jackie O’Hare demonstrating ‘Like a Magpie’. The competition will be a ‘Miniature’. Visitors are always welcome.

All children who read six or more books will be presented with a medal and certificate to celebrate their achievement. Look out too for the Mungler Top Trumps cards to collect and swap with family and friends. Children can choose any books they like: fact books, stories, joke books or picture books. Audio books and e-books count as well, so long as they borrow them from a library. Are Norfolk’s children brave enough to explore The Awful Upstairs, The Gruesome Ground Floor and The Spine-tingling Cellar?

August is a great time of year to prune evergreen hedges like Leylandii, Privet and Yew and also some deciduous hedging; although formal hedging and more vigorous varieties can also benefit from a second or third pruning in early spring and summer. Winter and late-autumn pruning should be avoided for evergreens, due to frost damage.
When hedging is pruned regularly and correctly it will have a dramatic effect, restricting outward growth to provide a denser and fuller hedge. A hedge should always be thicker at the bottom than the top (the “A” shape above) to allow sunlight to reach the lower branches and thus be dense from top to bottom. This shape can very quickly be lost if regular pruning is not carried out, and re-shaping is not always easy or possible at a given time of year, depending upon the species. Most overgrown hedges can be reduced dramatically at this time of year and will grow stronger before winter.
Flowering hedging including Lavender, Berberis, Escallonia and Rosemary are best pruned immediately after flowering. It is always preferable to lightly trim the tops of Lavender each year, rather than cutting into old, woody stems. For other varieties of flowering hedging there can be more specific pruning regimes (i.e. after fruiting) and we highly recommend reading up before pruning.
By allowing just a little time each year you can have a hedge which stays dense, looks good and produces an abundance of flowers. Barry & Rob’s Gardening Services

Get set for summer with Animal Magic Dog Club
Now that the warmer weather is finally here, we’re all looking forward to enjoying the summer but please remember that dogs can suffer from the same problems that we do from over exposure to the sun. This includes dehydration, sunburn and heatstroke which can be fatal.
Here’s our Animal Magic top tips for a safe summer with your dog: • Don’t leave your dog in the car – even in the shade with windows open the temperature can soar turning your car into an oven very quickly. Remember - dogs die in hot cars.
• Try to walk your dog in the cool of the morning or evening and if you really must walk at lunchtime choose a sheltered lane or wood. Never allow your dog to exercise excessively in hot weather. 22
• Consider having your dog’s coat clipped for the summer - Most breeds seem to really appreciate this.
• Your dog will enjoy a shady spot to lie in but during the hottest part of the day they might be more comfortable indoors.
• If your dog goes off their food try to feed them later in the evening when it is cooler and you will usually find their appetite returns.
• Make sure your dog always has a supply of clean drinking water. Always carry water with you on hot days, and give your dog frequent small amounts.
• Most dogs enjoy a paddle, swim or game with the hosepipe. It’ll help them keep cool, but after fun in the water always dry their ears and under collars to avoid irritations.

But most of all enjoy a fun and safe summer with your dog!
Animal Magic Dog Club based near North Walsham is a fun, family orientated club offering a wide range of training for puppies, junior and adult dogs. For more information on the club and classes available please call Kathy on 01263 720730 or visit our web site www.animal-magix.co.uk Cromer Times 427 August 10th 2013
POPPY LINE TO STAGE MASSIVE STEAM GALA AT END OF AUGUST
Two of the most famous steam locomotives in britain are set to star in North Norfolk’s Poppy Line Gala, which runs from Friday August 30th to Sunday September 1st.
Tornado, the only steam loco built this century, is joined by Oliver Cromwell, the giant engine that commanded the Norwich – London expresses until diesels took over.
There’s also a remarkable survivor in the programme. No. 76084, one of the standard locomotives built for British Railways after the second world war, was rescued from the scrapyard 39 years ago and spent the next 30 years as a super-large ornament in a Retford garden. Set up to restore her, the 76084 Locomotive Company has now completed the task, and the engine will be running on the Poppy Line for the next two years.
Other engines lined up for the Gala include former Southern Railway King Arthur class Sir Lamiel, which used to haul holiday expresses from London to the West Country, and the railway’s popular B12 express resplendent in the apple green colour of the old London and North Eastern Railway.
There’ll be an intensive passenger service on all three days of the Gala, and demonstration goods trains will also be operated (the first of these, for the early bird photographers, will leave Holt at 7.20am each day).
New for Old at Poppy Line The Poppy Line's "new" steam engine, british Railways Standard Class 4 no.76084, pulled its first train for more than 40 years on Sunday 21 July.
The train was a special, reserved for shareholders of the 76084 Locomotive Company, which carried out the restoration. The engine was officially relaunched at Holt Station when John Oldcorn, Chairman of the company, broke the traditional bottle of bubbly on the front buffer beam. Our photo catches the moment.
On the Friday and Saturday evenings, a special beer train is scheduled, and it’s hoped that fish ‘n’ chips will also be on offer.
This is a super value day out. Rover tickets, which give unlimited travel on all trains all day, are just £19 adult, £18 senior and £11 child 5 – 15. Under 5s go free. There’s a family ticket (2 adults + 2 children, or 3 adults + 1 child) at £45, and 2- and 3-day tickets are also available. If you book in advance (online at www.nnrailway.co.uk or on 01263 820 800) before August 23rd, you’ll enjoy a generous 15% discount on the walk-up fares.
Boutique faashion at purse-friendly prices
The engine was built in 1952 as part of the British Railways re-equipment programme after the Second World War. It was saved from the famous Barry scrap yard in Wales in the early '70s, but then spent some years as a very large garden ornament at a Retford address. Saved again by the 76084 company, it has been restored by enthusiast Ian Storey and his team. Painting into lined-out BR livery was carried out by the North Norfolk Railway works at Weybourne.
76084 is now running in service on the Poppy Line, where it will be resident for the next two years.

Colour In Motion
In August, The Gallery Norfolk celebrates its first year – and affirms its reputation for vibrancy and colour – with an exhibition of paintings by the Norwich based painter Leon bunnewell. Exuding atmosphere and energy, Bunnewell’s landcapes, seascapes and townscapes have attracted a great deal of attention from visitors to The Gallery Norfolk since it opened in Summer 2012.
“People love the passion they feel in Leon’s pictures,” says the gallery’s owner, Polly Miller, “They evoke strong emotions. His paintings of Cromer and the beaches here have understandably proved very popular here, but earlier this year he showed me more of his work depicting other towns, like East and West Runton and Sheringham – and as for his landscapes ... they really blew me away! He is a master at capturing a sense of movement –

whether it be in the waves of the sea or in a scene on a beach or in a street... But he also manages to instil an apparently serene landscape with his trademark intensity and dynamism. The effect can be quite mesmerising, and that motivated me to create an exhibition that does justice to the full range of his work.”
Leon Bunnewell works primarily with oils, although he is also experienced with acrylics, watercolours and pastels and has produced many pencil drawings. Largely self-taught – as he says “painting for love” – he nearly always works outdoors, “on the spot, throughout the year and in all weathers. I paint quite quickly, in a single session, working loosely and often vigorously and aiming for spontaneity and freshness. My wish is to create a painting with character, personality and feeling; evoking how the subject behaves and feels – and the sensations it creates in me – rather than just capturing how it looks.” "Compare your signature with your best hand-writing, all your character is in the signature and that's what I put into my paintings."
Over the past year, demand for The Gallery Norfolk’s paintings, drawings and prints has grown, with pieces by new local names now complementing the work of artists who helped set the gallery’s creative direction from day one. They include Sarah McMenemy and Andy Lovell: “Sarah’s six new prints of Cromer – available as a limited-edition set – are proving especially desirable, as are Andy’s three new silk-screen prints,” explains Polly Miller.
Visitors to The Gallery Norfolk are both impressed and surprised by the range of art on offer from both established and rising names. Prices start as low as £30 for original works of art, but there are also pieces to tempt the more serious collector. The gallery also offers a specialist framing service: “The emphasis is on helping customers to find a creative framing solution that really works well in their home – as well as being crafted to very high standards for a realistic price.”
Also offering an array of craftwork and jewellery, the gallery has become a popular source for gifts. In everything it does, The Gallery Norfolk sets store by colour, originality and strong design.
“We’ve built close relationships with individual craftspeople, such as jewellers, ceramicists and glass-makers, but we also now stock a handpicked collection of vintage glass by makers such as Murano and Dartington. It’s an eclectic mix, but it all gives the gallery its special personality. ”Pop in to view the exhibition on Church Street at the east end of Cromer, or call Polly on 01263 515745 or visit www.thegallerynorfolk.co.uk

season is now fast drawing to a close. The Hansells League is now over and the team completed their season with a 3-2 win away at Lakeside and what was a rather disappointing 0-5 defeat away at R G Carter BC. Captain Graham however was pleased with the overall team display this season having won six of the last seven games. It was the start of the season when the team was being ‘adjusted’ that we did not do quite so well. This win by R G Carter was sufficient for them to win the Zone and give them the opportunity to take part in the County Play Offs, the winner being offered a place in the County Premier League. In the Tuesday evening County Mixed Federation League Captain John's Cromer Crabs team visited Mill Farm and came away with an excellent 9-0 win. John, Graham and Chrissie clawing a win on the last end from what earlier in the game looked to be a certain defeat. This was followed by a very close game against local rivals Suffield Park which resulted in a very tight 5-4 win. At the time of writing one game remains, away against Holt Tawny Owls. Area A, in which the Crabs play, is very close at the top and I shall not know the final League placings till next time. The Cromer Crows under the guidance of Captain Kay were at home against Suffield Park ‘B’ and had a very good 7-2 win. The next week the game was cancelled so it looks as they have at least two games left. NANSA team Captain Roger arrived to watch a league match in what can only be described as very short shorts, his legs had not seen much sun. In the league his team had a very good draw at home 4-4 against Holt Swifts.
Tales from the Bowling Green ...

We all wish them the best of success and hope they manage to find accommodation which I understand is not always that easy with so many competitors to add to the normal number of holiday makers at Skegness at this time of the year. I have noted that Big David - who bowled without his hat one evening, I think to get some sun to his head, - bowls like Dorothy. John the Birder bowled a wrong bias and claimed it was first of the season. Jackie now has her own measure, thanks to Jean, so no chance of husband Jack winning in the roll ups now.
I am pleased that the weather stayed fine for Susan Ealden’s County Presidents Day
Big David’s hat
and a good time was had by all who took part.
Chrissie had a motoring problem in Overstrand. It seems that the kerbs are rather sharp and a tyre was ripped when she called into the local shop buy some gift wrap paper. We are all genuinely sorry but can't quite understand what she was doing on the pavement. After going to the local garage it turned out to be rather expensive gift wrap.
This is a repeat but I am pleased to do so. The club is very pleased to host a Norfolk County Ladies County game against Leicestershire on Friday 16th August. Our Norfolk Bowls Association Ladies President, Susan Ealden will welcome the teams onto the green and be looking for a good result from her County representative team.
And so I move on to the forthcoming games that you may wish to come along and support. With the various leagues coming to an end the number of games reduce considerably. Even slightly fewer games as in the next fortnight we have three away friendly games, and the NANSA team have four away games in August to finish the season. Whoever compiled their fixture list?!
