Issue 429 7th September 2013

The sun shines on Cromer Carnival Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent

This year’s Cromer Carnival has been hailed as one of the most successful for many years with bumper crowds taking part in over 120 events across the three week event.

On the opening day of the Carnival over 100 carbooters set up on the Carnival field alongside the Motorbike Extravaganza, Craft Fair, Antiques Valuation and the start of the Mini Beer Festival which saw 15 ales and ciders on tap including a special Carnival Ale by Elgoods.

Sunday saw the Crowning of Miss Cromer, Jade Armstrong by Norfolk’s very own entertainer Olly Day in front of a crowded Pier Forecourt. The Carnival Royal Family arrived in three vintage cars and were entertained, along with the crowds, by singer Dale before a host of comedy from Olly Day.

Up at the arena, thousands of people enjoyed a day of sunshine and enjoyed numerous events including the Dog Show and the Carnival Gymkhana with over 250 cars, vans and lorries turning out for the Cromer Custom & American Car Show.

Slow roast belly of pork with scallops and roe and John had grown in the greenhouse my eyes lit up. They lit up even more when I bit into one, as it was probably the fieriest, spiciest chilli I’ve ever eaten. Hot stuff here at the Grove! and a very, very warm welcome for me.

The first recipe from new Grove head chef Dave ‘Charlie’ Hodson has been on the à la carte menu now for a few weeks and is already established as an all-time classic.

‘It’s wonderful to be creating something very special at the Grove and I’m very excited to be taking over the monthly Cromer Times recipe slot. This is one of my signature dishes, pan-seared scallops with Norfolk belly pork and roe, and the perfect accompaniment is a little dash of chilli dressing. We use our own vegetables here in the gardens, so when Ann brought down some nice red chillies that her

‘I do hope you enjoy my slow roasted belly of Norfolk pork with scallops and roe and I look forward to seeing you at the Grove very soon.’ My butcher, Icarus Hines in Cromer, will happily advise on the size of pork required, dependant on how many eating, and will also take the skin off and the bone out (pan ready, as we say!)

While it’s piping hot slice a good chunk of your pork belly onto a nice warm plate. Place your scallops as you like on the pork, and to perfectly execute dress with a small amount of crème fraiche, black fish roe, fresh coriander and fresh chilli dressing just be careful if you’re using Ann’s chillies! Finally my little luxury, if you fancy it, is

a very simple ragout of white beans.

Enjoy! Charlie

When the meat is cooked, pan-fry your two scallops in sesame oil with a tinkle of seasoning. Please, please try to buy fresh scallops, as there is very little price difference but a huge advantage in flavour…! Sear them on each side for approximately one-two minutes and then let them rest for a couple of minutes more.

Six Years On

Services. This created the large cleaning group that they hold today.

All the staff have a ‘can do’ ethos and react swiftly to customers needs. They feel that whatever someone asks, there’s always a way.

The Norfolk Cleaning Group was started as Norfolk Cleaning Ltd by husband and wife team Peter and Diane Murther. They felt it would be the ideal company to operate after they were unable to find a professional cleaning company that would look after their home and office in North Walsham.

Just over a year ago, they had to move to larger premises, more than doubling the size to accommodate the professional laundry equipment needed for the laundry, along with extended offices for the administration needed to run such an expanding business.

Six years on, and with various accreditations and quality assurance systems, including the Norfolk County Councils Trusted Trader Scheme, the Norfolk Cleaning Group has grown phenomenally. They now employ over 50 members of staff, run a fleet of vehicles that can barely fit in their car park and manage over 150 holiday homes. Add to this the numerous local business’ and private homes they look after, growth was rapid and Norfolk Cleaning soon developed into a further two companies; Norfolk Holiday Home Management & Norfolk Laundry

All of this success has been a team effort and they would like to thank the management team, staff and customers for their repeat business and personal recommendations as they wouldn’t have been able to do it without them all!

Who knows where they we will be in another six years time…

Runton Parish History Society

The rural area around Cromer in North Norfolk, may not, in most peoples’ minds, be thought of as home to railway junctions, but that was the case in the late 19th and early 20th century, when many miles of track were laid.

In the immediate area around Cromer, there were as many as seven signal boxes, controlling the junctions and the two stations at Cromer. Through trains would be arriving from and departing to London, the Midlands and the North. In fact Cromer had expresses complete with restaurant cars running between the North Norfolk resort and London. Scores of trains would be transporting holidaymakers to the area during the summer months. Those days have gone now, but Cromer and Sheringham still have an hourly service to Norwich, which is very well used.

On Saturday 21 September at 7.15pm Runton Parish History Society have arranged for well known local author and historian Nigel Digby to come to East Runton Village Hall to give an illustrated talk about those early days of rail travel. Admission is £3 including light refreshments. The Society is asking if any residents or visitors with memories of those days could write them down to add to the Society’s archive.

21st September, Merchants Place, Cromer, 10.00am to 4.00pm

Following the success of a similar event held in June, it was decided to hold another one.

The idea of these days is to give people who have heard of “alternative therapies” but never tried them, to come and talk to the therapists there and perhaps have a treatment or two.

For instance, you may wonder what on earth are Shiatsu, or Reiki and Seichem healing and how could these treatments help me?

As before the taster sessions start from £5. Of course, it is also there for people who have had treatments before and wish to try them again.

As well as the practitioners from the event in June, this time we can offer hydrotherm massage as well. For the full list of participants see the advertisement below.

Merchants Place, Cromer, is the most wonderful venue for an event of this type. It is located right at the end of Church Street, just opposite the Sticky Earth Café. Entrance to the event is free and refreshments are available throughout the day.

Looking forward to seeing you on the 21st September.

Jonas Seafoods brings new life to crab processing in Cromer Jonas Seafoods will see the start of a whole new era with the opening of its brand new crab and lobster processing factory in Cromer on Friday 30th August.

It was feared that large scale processing of fresh, locally caught crab and lobster would be a thing of the past when Cromer Crab Company finally closed its doors just a year ago, but the support shown by people across the whole country, ranging from local residents and politicians to media personalities, spurred work to see the revival of a business with which Cromer has long been associated. Jonas Seafoods is currently based in East Runton, but the premises are too small and with business partner Nick Samujlik, company owner and managing director Kevin Jonas is now in a position to expand significantly, helping the local crab and lobster fishing fleet in the process.

Leader of North Norfolk District Council, Tom FitzPatrick, said, “I am delighted that North Norfolk District Council has been able to help with this significant expansion of Jonas Seafoods, bringing large-scale seafood processing back to Cromer. We tried hard to forestall the closure of the Cromer Crab Company, but when that became inevitable we were determined to work just as hard to bring about a replacement processing facility, and here it is. This new facility will help not just to safeguard and promote the unique Cromer crab and lobster brand, but also support the local inshore fishing industry and many associated local jobs and families at the same time.”

Kevin Jonas said, “It’s been hard work, but the District Council has offered us outstanding support and advice, helping to make it all possible and smoothing out a long and complex process.”

The expanded business, on the Stonehill industrial estate, off Holt Road, just west of Cromer, already has 22 people, some of whom previously worked for the Cromer Crab Company, on its books. It aims to double that number by the end of September when processing is fully under way. An on-site retail outlet is planned to open in April 2014. Financial support for the new operation has been received from North Norfolk District Council’s Coastal Pathfinder fund and the Marine Management Organisation (MMO), alongside bank loans and private funds.

BAAF looking for Adoption Champions

Have you an adoption connection? If so, you will know what an amazing thing it is to give a child a safe, loving and permanent home. There is a desperate need for more adopters throughout the UK and you could help inspire others to become a ‘forever family’ for a vulnerable child or sibling group.

The British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF) is looking for more people to volunteer as Adoption Champions to help spread the word about adoption. Even if you do not have a direct connection, but simply care about creating a better future for the most vulnerable of our children, you are very welcome to sign up as an Adoption Champion too.

Our adopted daughter is the most precious thing in our lives, so I have become a Champion to help encourage others to think about adoption – to show that adoption not only changes a child’s life in the best way possible, but also that it brings so much joy and reward to adoptive parents.

Could you inspire others by sharing your experiences by writing a short blog or holding a talk in your local community? Or perhaps you could use your social media channels to support adoption. There are lots of different ways to get involved and the BAAF team are there to give you advice and support.

Region's Ambulance Chief Grilled over Plans to Bring Improvements to North Norfolk A leading ambulance campaigner from north Norfolk has met the interim Chief Executive of the East of England Ambulance Service Trust to grill him on his plans for the future of our ambulance service.

about ambulance performance and will continue to campaign for a better service in North Norfolk.

The meeting took place at Potter Heigham station. Speaking after her meeting Denise Burke said “We had a productive and frank meeting. Andrew Morgan acknowledged that the ambulance service in North Norfolk is not acceptable and needs substantial improvements. The trust is still developing its plans for board approval. Andrew recognises there are no quick fixes and that this is a long term turnaround. Their plans need to have clear targets and timelines which Andrew agreed he will take on board. We will monitor progress closely to ensure that North Norfolk’s residents and visitors get the ambulance service they need. I was heartened that Andrew recognises the job that needs to be done in North Norfolk.”

Lily Bs Coffee Morning

Denise Burke with Act on Ambulances campaigners in Cromer.

The August meeting between Denise Burke, Labour's parliamentary candidate, and Andrew Morgan was the latest stage of the Act on Ambulances campaign launched in 2012 by North Norfolk Labour Party in response to local residents’ concerns about poor response times and slow turnaround at the Norfolk & Norwich hospital. Despite several changes announced by the Trust, the campaigners remain concerned

COME FOR COFFEE ,7·6 )25 0$&0,//$1

On September 27th Lily b boutique in Prince of Wales Road Cromer will be joining thousands of others across the country to host a MacMillan coffee morning.

Owner Jane Clarke said, ‘we regularly donate to MacMillan and other charities and this seemed a great opportunity to do more and get people in the community involved. All of our staff and several customers have been affected by cancer in some way over the past year and at a staff meeting a few months back, this was suggested as a way of doing our bit to help’.

“We will be open from 9.30am and will have coffee and cakes on offer as well as other fund-raising activities. We will also give all our ‘loyalty customers’ opportunity to donate their discount on any purchases they make on the day. In addition we will donate a percentage of our sales from the morning to MacMillan.”

“We hope to see lots of customers old and new, eat cake and drink coffee and of course raise lots of money.”

One in three of us will get cancer and it’s the toughest thing most of us will ever face. If you’ve been diagnosed with cancer, or a loved one has, you’ll want a team of people in your corner supporting you every step of the way. MacMillan provide practical, medical and financial support and push for better cancer care. 98% of MacMillan income is from donations, so fund raising events like this are vital.

The team at Lily B hope to see lots of people on September 27th to play their part in joining ‘the biggest coffee morning in the world!’

Festival Lifebuoy Auction a grand success! The 2013 Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival came to a close on Sunday 25 August with a Grand Lifebuoy Auction and World Pier Crabbing Championships in Cromer.

Lifebuoys lined the slopes leading down to the pier, local food and craft stalls lined the promenade and lines were set ready for a fun-filled, action-packed day of competitive crabbing and bidding. The sunny bank holiday Sunday saw thousands of people visiting the town to take part in the festivities.

Lynnes fetched £350. This was closely followed by the lifebuoy sponsored by Breakers Cafe in Cromer and decorated by Dianne Lindsay at £300 which was bought back by the Cafe and will be displayed there for customers to view.

Festival chairman Tony Shipp said “seeing all 73 lifebuoys on show together for the first time was spectacular along the zig-zag slopes, we are extremely pleased with the support the auction received and the amount raised for the Festival’s charities”

Under the hammer of renowned Sophie Gibney auctioneer Joint Crabbing Champion (Photo: Kate Royal) Martyn Fox, the 73 lifebuoys sold in just over 90 minutes to raise over £5,000 which will be distributed to local charities via the Festival’s Community Grant scheme.

Lifebuoy trail organiser, Kate Royall, said “we are incredibly pleased and happy with the way it’s gone, it was an incredible amount to raise in only 90 minutes. It was fantastic to see so many locals and visitors enjoying the day and furiously bidding on the lots!”

Prior to the auction on Sunday the Festival hosted the fourth World The lifebuoys were part of the Pier Crabbing Championships. Dear Margaret,

When we go to post our letters, parcels or even open a new account at the Post Office, we should expect to be dealt with by fully trained and dedicated Post Office staff. Yet we are now finding that the government is allowing businesses to operate Post Offices with shop staff who have very little training. No disrespect to the workers, but doing the post is quite different to selling a can of beans.

This downgrading of workers to do more qualified work on the cheap is going on far too often, and devaluing our services. Even when workers take the time to get more qualified they are only rewarded with a few pence more an hour.

Is this the way our postal services will be going with the privatisation of the Royal Mail? It's a bleak vision of the future if so.

Recently MP Norman Lamb, who helped oversee the proposals for selling the company off last year, commented that the Post Office & Royal Mail has benefited from a surge in online shopping. It seems more likely that those millions of pounds in profits has come from the government fattening up the company before its sale through increased prices.

I expect those prices to rise even higher after their privatisation plans go through. David Spencer Southrepps

Dear Margaret,

On behalf of North Norfolk Rotary Club may I thank Royal Cromer Golf Club and in particular, Lee, Will and Tim at the professional shop, for assisting us in holding our annual Charity Golf day last month.

We enjoyed superb weather, excellent golf and brilliant fellowship, resulting in making £3404 profit, which will go towards our President John’s charity choice, ‘Holt Youth Project’.

May I thank our two main sponsors - Logwise Ltd and Norfolk Homes - alongside all our fellow hole and prize sponsors, without whom we would not have been so successful. In addition thanks to Angela and Graham for running our raffle which made £605.

Finally, may I thank all our fellow golfers for supporting us again this year.

Pictured are the Norfolk Homes winners with a total of 99 points, P Makepeace, l Morgon, C Lockwood and D Howard.

It would seem appropriate now to also extend an invitation to all your readers inviting you as companies or individuals to join us in our annual Dinner Dance on 7 December at Pinewood Park Leisure at Bodham - we have an excellent Christmas evening planned so please call me on 01263588160 for further information. Kind regards Kevin Abbs

Dear Margaret,

Once again we had a successful evening in the Cromer Carnival marquee on the Tuesday of Carnival Week.

We would like to say a big thank you to all the local people, shopkeepers and businesses, including some from Overstrand and Holt, who donated prizes for the Carnival Bingo Raffle. A record £962 was raised on the raffle which will go into the Carnival Fund, so thanks also to the people who continue to come along and support us each year. Bothered by sagging facial or neck skin? You have many treatment options at the Coltishall Clinic

Whilst non-surgical options such as botox, fillers and lasers are very effective for early signs of facial ageing, only a surgical face or neck-lift can remove a lot of sagging skin.

Why an awake face lift?

Many cosmetic surgery patients are telling their surgeons that they don't want to go under general anaesthesia. Being under general anaesthesia is fraught with risks. Operations under general anaesthesia also tend to have prolonged bruising and recovery involved.

How do you perform face and neck lifts at the Coltishall Clinic?

With our technique, the operation is performed under local anaesthesia with an awake patient. A special solution of saline (salt-water), epinephrine, and lidocaine is injected. Saline helps to separate the tissues, making the dissection less traumatic for the face and neck. Epinephrine causes the tiny blood vessels in the area to constrict, minimising bleeding and bruising. Lidocaine numbs the area to provide pain control and this lasts for 12-18 hours afterwards-reducing the need for painkillers.

What types of face and neck lift do you offer at the Coltishall Clinic? • One stitch facelift- this is our minimally invasive facelift. It is suitable for younger

patients or for those who do not want a full face or neck lift but desire a subtle result at low cost. One small incision hidden in the hair- lifts the jaw line.

• Thread lift- this is also a minimally invasive procedure and suitable for those patients who want to avoid the knife on their face.

• Laser face lift- this is an excellent option when the main consideration is excess fat in chin and jowls. Laser can melt fat and also heats the surrounding tissue. This stimulates collagen formation and assists in skin and tissue tightening.

• Full face and neck lift- we perform a tumescent facelift. It is also known by various other names such as weekend or mini-facelift, S-lift or MACS lift. One side is operated at a time. A small amount of skin in front of and below the ear is removed. The skin is lifted, underlying layer is tightened and finally the skin is repositioned and closed with fine sutures.

• Neck lift only- this can be performed through a tiny 1-inch incision in the neck crease.

How will I look after surgery?

The change following your surgery can be dramatic. The days of prolonged swelling and

bruising and having to hide away for weeks are long gone. Our patients do not generally get any significant bruising.

What are the benefits of Coltishall Clinic face-lift procedure? It offers the following advantages: • A natural look

• Quick recovery

• Minimal complication risk

• Minimal scars

• No hair loss

• Less cost

• Less risk of infection.

With so many face and neck lift options on offer, along with a whole host of cutting edge non-surgical options, we are sure to have a solution to offer you.

So why not give us a call on 0800 0430737 or log on to the website at www.coltishallclinic.co.uk.

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION

Poppy Appeal 2013

The Royal british Legion is the UK’s leading charity providing financial, social and emotional support to millions of ex-service personnel, current serving personnel and their families.

The Legion, founded in 1921, is the voice for the ex-service and current serving forces community. British service men and women are in action around the world every day of the year and if they need support in the future, the Legion is there for them.

However, none of this support can be available without the help and generosity of the public. We can all make a difference either by actively collecting for an hour or two during the Poppy Appeal period or by giving generously when you see our current collectors in your area.

My thanks go out to all those who help and contribute towards this cause and I look forward to, once again, a successful Poppy Appeal campaign for 2013.

The following list of wreaths are on order from the Royal British Legion. However should you or your organisation not be listed, please advise me (01263 768961): Army Cadet Force, British Red Cross, Chamber of Trade, Air Training Corps, Guides Association, Royal Naval Association, Cromer & Sheringham Brass Band, Felbrigg Council, Ladies Lifeboat Guild, Sea Scouts, REME, RAFA, RAF Association, RAOB, Royal British Legion , (Men), Royal British Legion (Women’s Section), Royal British Legion Halsey House, Town Council, St John’s Ambulance, Women’s Institute, Rotary International, Royal National Lifeboat (RNLI), NNDC, Inner Wheel.

Battle of Britain Sunday Service

The Sheringham and District Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association is holding this important annual service at 3pm on Sunday 15 September in St Peter’s Church, Sheringham.

This service is held each year to give thanks for, and to celebrate the victory in 1940 over the attacking German Air Force. This air superiority was the main reason that the United Kingdom was not invaded during the Second World War.

It is good that we continue to give thanks to God for our deliverance and to honour the brave aircrew, many of whom were in their late teens or early twenties.

Everyone is invited to join our members in this important act of worship which will be led by the Branch Chaplain, the Revd Robert Wright, and by the Vicar of Sheringham, the Revd Christian Heycocks.

The Branch President, Air Commodore Tom Benson, hopes that many of you will join with us for this special service. This year is the 70th anniversary of the formation of the Association.

Robert Wright Chaplain, Royal Air Forces Association

IMPROVEMENT OF WORK/LIFE BALANCE FOR FAMILIES By Miranda Marshall Partner at Hayes + Storr

On the 25 February 2013, MPs passed the second reading of the new Children and Families bill in the House of Commons. This proposes the extension of the statutory rights, both in employment and family law, that both parents have in their children’s upbringing. It is not yet law.

Child Arrangement Order. This can set out where the children live and how much time they spend with the other parent. It will remove the old labels of “contact” or Shared Residence Order. The changes should not affect the Family Court’s approach that the child should sustain a relationship with both parents, even though the child may spend less time with one parent. The new terminology is couched in terms of “involvement” so as to encourage shared parenting.

Maternity leave is to be used by the father instead of, or as well as, the other, -shared in blocks or taken together.

The Bill also proposes extending the right to request flexible working to all employees from 2015, rather than just parents and carers, as at present.

In the event of family breakdown there will be legal recognition that it is in the child’s interest for both parents to remain involved in the child’s life (except in cases where there is a risk of harm).

The old concepts of “residence” and “contact” are to be replaced with a single

Employers will need to be careful not to discriminate against fathers when considering flexible working requests, particularly in the light of the government’s wish to encourage shared parenting from the earliest days.

These are viewed as positive developments which should help to change society’s perception of traditional gender roles and to reduce discrimination. What were previously “maternal” issues

will now become “parental” ones. The aim is to enable and encourage parents to juggle work and children and to maintain a better work/life balance.

CROMER CARNIVAL PRESENTS RFSQ SAXOPHONE CONCERT Cromer Parish Hall The River Falls Saxophone Quintet, invited to play at Cromer by David Amis with the date chosen being within the famous Cromer Carnival programme, proved to be yet another plus to the already diverse events taking place during the Carnival festivities. David Milne, the Director of this saxophone quintet, is Professor of Music at the University of Wisconsin - in the heartland of the mid west USA - specialising in performing American Jazz repertoire. The quintet are in England on tour performing in prestigious venues including the Edinburgh Festival. Professor Milne, a friend of David Amis for some years, both having worked as music educators in Berlin, was happy to accept the invitation to play in Cromer! Opening the concert with a composition by David Milne immediately set the standard of what was to follow. Jazz vocalist, Holly Graham, singing My Funny Valentine, augmented the emotional involvement between audience and performer with the meaning of the lyrics - the warmth of the voice and subtle interpretation of the vocal line brought about a different dimension to this evergreen ballade. Her performance of Somewhere over the Rainbow to a rhythm in bosa nova style proved to be different, but marred the intentions of the well loved ethereal ballade.

David Amis on trombone played an arrangement of J P Johnson’s Lament, performed with sincerity and living up to its title. In Lady Sings the Blues (Billie Holiday), again Graham’s jazz phrasing, being fully comfortable with the complexities of the accompaniment of this so brilliant quintet, aroused the almost tangible response from the informed jazz wise audience. Before the interval, the quintet adjusted to a quartet to play Dizzy Gillespies, A Night in Tunisia, full of exciting and complex ideas, with drive and pulse and that’s without percussion! The second set opened with Greensleeves, again the line up being a quartet. After the well known melody, the group launched into a 5/4 time signature in contrast to the usual 6/8 producing improvisatory ideas second to none! This was followed by a set of three pieces, known as Duke Ellington’s Three Piece Suite, which included well known standards, Moon Indigo and Caravan. Billie Holiday’s, Good Morning Heartache and the performances of

Gershwin’s Summer Time, in which Holly Graham and Dave Amis featured together, came over as the most comfortable for both artists. You Stepped out of a Dream with the lead taken by Dave Amis, brought out the emotional sound of the trombone in this venue, where the acoustics seemed to complement this particular instrument. The final piece, Stormy Moments, involved all the performers and was a fitting end to this wonderful evening of jazz at its very best. I believe an encore was called for which I missed, as it was past my bed time! Terry Keeler

close game against Holt Swallows but lost 3 – 5. Captain Roger tells me that it did look as if the team may come away with a 6 – 2 win but had “an England batting collapse” and unfortunately had to be content with the 3 points. The activities on Carnival Day were again a success. It was also very interesting and indeed surprising to see Past President, Frances sitting proudly on the back of a Harley-Davidson motor cycle as the procession started on its way. The club is now looking to take part in the Cawston Floodlight Competition and Captain John has been searching for available players. There are also the club competition finals to look forward to, although the number of entries this year has been very disappointing. Competition Secretary Roger has however done the best he can to make the competitions successful and the two weekends put aside for the finals should have a number of interesting games being played. In a competition game Hansells Captain Graham decided that he could be a bit casual and played in club shirt and jeans! Jackie, she of the attached valuable shoulder bag, was so pleased and excited at getting a ‘toucher’ in one game she threw her other bowl in the air but her face got in the way. No permanent damage though I am pleased to say. Neil who does not seem to be able to keep himself out of the news at

the moment has joined the wrong bias club during a recent morning roll up.

Our last visiting team this year will be a men’s touring side from Sussex County. We are delighted that they have chosen Cromer as one of the greens to visit during their tour and we look forward to a very competitive game. The club is also very pleased to be hosting a Ladies Federation Tournament on the green on Wednesday 18th September. This is a tournament that used to be the Grand Finale to the Ladies Federation League season. Unfortunately the league did not run this year but the various clubs decided to retain the triples tournament, and this year Cromer are the hosts. A ladies triple from each of the clubs will take part in what will be a knock out tournament. A winner will emerge and tea and sandwiches will follow.

And so very quickly I move on to the forthcoming games that you may wish to come along and support:

Norwich City Football Club choose Big C for their first of the season match day collection

Supporters of Norwich City were asked to give to their local cancer charity when they attended the match on 31 August.

Norwich City took on Southampton that day. Norwich City allows for five match day collections each year and the first one of the season benefitted the local cancer charity Big C.

Jonathan Redding of the Big C said of the collection ‘This was a wonderful opportunity to increase awareness of the charity amongst a large percentage of the local community it supports. It is through this local support that we are able to be here in the first place. This collection helped to raise funds for the Big C centre at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital.

We also fund other projects, including cancer research at the UEA, hospital equipment and services around the county. In October we will open a further centre in Kings Lynn. All of the money we raise in Norfolk stays in Norfolk.’

Overstrand Evening WI

In June, a group of members met for lunch before visiting the Old Vicarage Gardens at East Ruston. After walking round the impressive gardens the afternoon was rounded off with refreshments and a visit to the plant sales area.

At our July meeting we heard that members Val Bond and Janet Ellis have been selected to have their photographs included in the ‘Inland Waterways’ Norfolk Federation of WI’s 2014 Calendar. Margaret Dickinson entertained us with her talk relating humorous episodes from her nursing career. Margaret’s passion for nursing started at an early age when she delighted in bandaging her two brothers as they slept!

We started August with a table at the Overstrand Car Boot Sale. This was followed by an informal meeting in the middle of the month where members were able to try their hands at crafts or join the games table. The month was rounded off with a trip to Sheringham Little Theatre to see the comedy SS Farndale.

Our next meeting will be on 18 September when member Vivienne Hastings will give a talk on How to Deal with Dementia. We welcome visitors to our meetings which are on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30 pm in the Parish Hall, Overstrand. Cromer Times 429 September 7th 2013
