Local Man Embarks on Everest Adventure for Ellen’s Charity On 25 October lifelong Norfolk resident Fred Corbett will be undertaking the challenge of a lifetime to raise money for the Ellen Mezzetti Memorial Fund.
Ellen was the daughter of a friend who died suddenly aged just 16 years from an epileptic seizure. Since then her family led by mum Lynne and dad John, have been raising funds in her memory for Epilepsy Research UK. Their efforts include a bike ride spanning the length of Great Britain and a trek across the Grand Canyon.
In her memory Fred, who is a local cabinetmaker and member of Ellen's father John's Fighting Fit Gym, will be flying to Nepal in order to participate in this challenge. The trek will last for 18 days and in total will span over 120km at an altitude of 5,500 metres. To really make a difference however Fred will be funding the trip himself meaning all money raised will go towards Ellen's Fund in Epilepsy Research UK. To prepare for this challenge Fred, a Hapkido black belt, has been attending fitness classes at the Fighting Fit Gym, and using a running machine while wearing an altitude mask, lent to him by Mr Mezzetti. He has also been regularly walking the coastal path in sections to get used to distance walking. Fred admits he is a bit apprehensive about being with people he has never met, as normally he is quite a reserved person, but he is looking forward to this adventure.
In order to donate to Fred’s Everest Base Camp adventure, visit www.virginmoneygiving.com or pop in to Fighting Fit Martial Arts and Fitness Academy, Louden Road, Cromer.

CROMER MUSIC EVENINGS
Cromer Music Evenings celebrates 20 years with its new season of live classical music starting this month. Despite its name, for the past 15 years concerts have been held at Templewood, Frogshall, Northrepps, on Sunday afternoons starting at 3pm.
By inviting young musicians Manon Fischer-Dieskau on the cusp of their professional careers, we have achieved performances of the highest standard. Most of our previous players have gone on to become internationally recognised soloists.
Manon Fischer-Dieskau is one such pianist who has played here before when our regular audience was enthralled by her brilliance.
Templewood
On Sunday 13 October Manon will be performing works by Liszt, Schubert and Chopin. Concert starts at 3pm.
Concerts are open to all. Tickets are sold at the door with no pre-booking. For more details please see the website www.cromermusicevenings.org.uk or phone Tina and Eddie Anderson on 01263 579400.

It’s Science, but not as we know it…
When pioneers in Science and Engineering such as Sir Christopher Cockerell, CBE who invented the Hovercraft and Sir James Dyson, CBE, inventor of the Dyson vacuum cleaner have walked the same corridors as many students from Gresham’s in Holt it is wonderful to see that Science and Engineering is still thriving at the School with many students still showing a keen interest in developing careers in these fields. Over the summer some Gresham’s students chose to spend some of their summer holidays attending courses to help further their knowledge in a variety of engineering fields hosted by The Smallpeice Trust.
The Smallpeice Trust is an independent charitable trust which promotes Engineering as a career primarily through the provision of residential courses for young people aged 12 to 18. Clare Mawson, an Upper Sixth student at Gresham’s attended a Naval Architecture course at Plymouth University, she said “Gresham’s Physics department provided me with Clare Mawson
information about Engineering courses The Smallpeice Trust were running. It was a great experience as I found the Dock Yard tour fascinating and team design and build project on mini-submarines great fun. It made me all the more interested in pursuing a career in this area and I am now applying to study Naval Architecture at university.
Nick Twyman, a Lower Sixth student with a keen interest in Science and who with the help of Gresham’s Careers Department decided to attend a Nuclear Engineering course at The University of Manchester. The Smallpeice Trust, in collaboration with the National Nuclear Laboratory provided an insight into some of the challenges facing nuclear industry today.
The course included a combination of presentations, workshops, practical ‘design and make’ projects, and a final assessment which involved demonstrating their finished product, complete with design drawings, method statements and risk assessments. The design and make project challenged students to move spent nuclear fuel from a storage facility. It involved the students pitching their ideas in a “Dragon’s Den” type scenario in order to gain funding, allowing them to then go out and make their design.
Nick said, “Before going on the course I was nervous, as the only people who would possibly want to go on a “Nuclear
Engineering” taster course, during their summer holidays, would be socially awkward “nerds”. This was not the case. I met many new Nick Twyman people and had a lot of fun whilst learning a great deal about this field of work, which I had previously known very little about. The course consisted of one main engineering task and a variety of lectures. I highly recommend this and any other of The Smallpeice Trust courses as they really help to develop your knowledge in your area of interest.”
Gresham’s is also delighted to be entering the Student Robotics competition this year where students in the Sixth Form are tasked with designing, building and testing their own robots ready to compete against other teams. The School will this year be hosting the Eastern Region events with the kickstart opening event on October 12, with a number of local schools across Norfolk already signed up to take part.

Special Olympics Norfolk holds taster day at UEA tAstER DAY FoR BuDDInG AtHLEtEs...
Budding athletes, cricketers and golfers, aged 16 or over, with learning disabilities from across norfolk are amongst those being invited to take part in a sports taster day at norwich’s uEA campus on Friday 11 october.
Organised by Special Olympics Norfolk, the day will showcase athletics, cricket, golf, tennis and boccia (a variation on bowls) with specialist coaches and volunteers on hand to organise mini competitions, provide training and support for all those interested.
In addition coaches and officials from Special Olympics Norfolk’s skiing, gymnastics and swimming sections will be present to provide information about the range of regional, national and global competitions delivered by the Special Olympics movement.
Richard Sanders, chairman of Special Olympics Norfolk, explained: “The taster day represents a welcoming and sociable introduction to sport for adults at the superb sporting facilities offered by the UEA campus.
“We hope as many adults as possible with special needs, aged 16 and above, will take up this fantastic opportunity to try out new sports, have a lot of fun and find out what Special Olympics is about and up to across the county.
“Although this event is aimed at adults over the age of 16, Special Olympics Norfolk is also hoping to hear from families of learning disabled children for whom we can arrange training from the age of 6 and competition in sport and athletics from the age of 8.
“We already have almost 100 people of all ages from every corner of Norfolk taking part in sporting events and competing regionally and nationally and, in some instances, on the international stage for Great Britain around the world.
“Special Olympics Norfolk recently had four gymnasts and a tennis player compete very successfully for the Eastern region at the Special Olympics National Summer Games in Bath at the start of September. They returned with a stunning haul of 24 medals between them!” added Richard.

The meeting is to be held on Wednesday 16 October at 7pm in The Saddlers Shop, St Nicholas Church Hall Complex,Vicarage St, North Walsham. NR28 9DQ. For more information contact, Stephen Hurley on 07748335041 or 01603 154822 or email stephen.hurley@norfolk.gov.uk

70th Wedding Anniversary Celebrations for Tony and Joyce Morris
On Monday 16 September Tony and Joyce Morris celebrated their 70th (platinum) wedding anniversary at the Royal British Legion, Halsey House, in Cromer.
Earlier at the weekend they took their family out for a special lunch at the Pepper Pot in West Runton and then back to Halsey House for a glass of pink champagne and cake and to open their cards, including one from the Queen.
Tony and Joyce moved into Halsey House in June this year, after living in Sheringham for 25 years. Their great passion is listening to classical music, and they own an extensive collection of CDs, holding miniconcerts for each other several evenings a week. They also enjoy a full and active social life with
visits from their family and friends, as well as trips and outings arranged by the British Legion.
During their 70 years of marriage a lot has changed. They got married during the war in Southend at 8.30am in the morning, as Tony was only able to take a few days leave from the Royal Navy. All their family and friends pooled their rations to create a wedding breakfast and cake. Then they went by train for a brief honeymoon in a cottage near Torquay which had been lent to them by a friend.
However the cottage was old and the roof leaked, so they had to cover the floor with pots and pans to catch the drips of rain. The only source of heating was a toaster that they strung up on a string across the room!

North Norfolk Speakers Club
An entertaining evening with much laughter was enjoyed by all when North Norfolk Speakers Club held their annual Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contests in North Walsham on Wednesday 4 September. Against very stiff competition, the winner of the Humorous Speech Contest was Paul Rosier, with his speech entitled ‘Much ado about nothing’.
Second place was awarded to Stuart Richards, with Clive Willet taking third place.
Gillian Beecroft won the Table Topics Contest by eloquently speaking on a

CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY
The society’s summer break coincided with a very decent spell of weather, so decent in fact that when our members’ autumn show took place in September some were worried that the very dry August would mean that entries would suffer. The worries were unfounded, however, and we had a very good turnout in the end.
Best in class in the flower section was awarded to June Rattle’s hydrangea and Marian O’Hare won best in class for the fruit and vegetable section with a truly outstanding display. Bob Kent was the winner of our club competition. Our thanks must go to Bob Wilkinson from
Sheringham for judging the exhibits. It was a very successful evening and got the second half of our year off to a good start.
Three members of the society judged the entries in our schools’ competition. Seven schools took part this year and all of them must be congratulated on achieving very high standard. The winner this year was Erpingham Primary. All schools received a garden voucher and a certificate as a thank you from the society.

In a week or two our President, Bill LeGrice, will plant a tree in the grounds of the winning school to mark their achievement. Our thanks must go to the trustees of the Cromer and Sheringham Crab and Lobster Festival for making a
Norman Lamb welcomes free school meals for infants in England
From September 2014 all infant school pupils including 26,162 in Norfolk will benefit from a free hot and healthy meal at lunchtime.
Last month Liberal Democrat Leader and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg announced that every child in infant school in England will receive a free school lunch.
The Coalition will fund schools in England to provide free meals for all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 in a measure that will save families £400 a year per child while helping to raise school standards and cut the attainment gap.
Universal free school meals for primary school pupils were a key recommendation in a recent review of school food produced independently for the Department for Education. The review found that, in pilots where all children had been given a free school dinner, students were academically months ahead of their peers elsewhere and more likely to eat vegetables at lunchtime.
At the same time, the Coalition will extend free school meals to disadvantaged students in further education and sixth form colleges. Free school meals are currently available only for eligible students at school sixth forms.
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said “My ambition is that every

financial contribution towards the funding of this very worthwhile competition.
Our next meeting is on Thursday 10 October at 7.30pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street. Our speaker is Howard Norton and his topic is “Delphiniums”. Visitors are always made welcome. The cost is £2.
primary school pupil should be able to sit down to a hot, healthy lunch with their classmates every day. We will start with infant school pupils because teaching healthy habits young, and boosting attainment early, will bring the biggest benefits.”
Commenting Norman Lamb said “Millions of parents across the country are feeling the squeeze. During the course of a year, the average family spends £400 on lunch for each child. We are determined to ease the financial burden for these families and give every child the chance in life that they deserve, building a stronger economy and a fairer society.”

THE JETTY CAFE, CROMER, FEATURED IN LIST OF TOP 50 ‘MUST EAT’ EXPERIENCES
The Jetty Cafe, on Cromer High Street, has been included in a new Top 50 ‘Must Eat’ list compiled by some of Britain’s most famous foodies.
The Kenwood Food Lovers Bucket List has been compiled for Kenwood, the UK’s leading kitchen appliance brand, by a panel of six esteemed culinary experts including TV chef Simon Rimmer, writer and editor of Waitrose Kitchen magazine William Sitwell and restaurant critic Giles Coren. It covers the essential food experiences that Brits should have in a lifetime; including ingredients to try, recipes to make at home, UK restaurants to visit and culinary adventures around the world.
Enjoying fresh seafood by the sea features in the top 50 food experiences and The Jetty Cafe has been named as one of the best places in the UK to indulge. Well known for its award-winning fresh Cromer crab salad, The Jetty Cafe is loved by locals and visitors alike.
Louise Gillespie, who owns and runs The Jetty Cafe, is delighted to have made it into the top 50 list, commenting: “Many visitors come to Cromer to eat delicious crab and the experience of eating crab sandwiches and salads is made more special with the smell of salt in the air and the sun shining! We are thrilled that The Jetty Café and Cromer have been mentioned in the list and would like to take the opportunity to thank our supplier Davies Fish Shop of Cromer for such wonderful local produce.” Simon Rimmer explains, “We’ve pulled together what we believe to be the ultimate, unmissable gastronomic experiences for food-loving Brits. From the simple pleasures of a fresh crab sandwich eaten on the beach, to soaking up the spice markets of Marrakech, there’s something on there for everyone. We hope it inspires foodies to get out and try new things, or even create their own Food Bucket Lists to munch their way through.”
And it follows new research from Kenwood that shows how much Brits have become obsessed with food - with six in ten people from the East
(61%) saying they would choose a great food experience over any other ‘life’ experiences, including pampering, animal safaris or extreme sports like sky diving.
Mark Swift, Director of Marketing for Kenwood, says: “It’s amazing to see what an effect food has on our lives. It’s such a fundamental part of British culture. We’ve pulled together the Food Lovers Bucket List to help people experience the very best that food has to offer both here and abroad, and The Jetty Cafe has a very well deserved mention on the list.” The Kenwood Food Lovers Bucket List can be viewed in full at www.kenwoodworld.com/uk.

Sing (and giggle a bit) with Cantamus Community Choir
Would you like to sing the magnificent coronation anthem ‘Zadok The Priest’?
Composed by George Frideric Handel for the coronation of George II in 1727, this rousing piece has been sung at every subsequent British coronation, including the anointing of Queen Elizabeth II, and will be sung by Cantamus Community Choir at their coming October concert together with works by Haydn and Elgar.
Cantamus predominantly sing traditional and choral music. We are a very friendly choir, prone to the odd fit of giggles, so if you would like the challenge of singing choral music please join us.
We rehearse every Thursday at 7.30pm in St James Church, Southrepps, NR11 8NR. No audition or experience is required and don’t be put off if you have little or no experience of reading music. All you need is a desire to have fun, sing and add to Cantamus’ strong community spirit. Our members come from Sheringham, Happisburgh, Banningham, North Walsham, and towns / villages in between. So if you would like to join Cantamus but transport is a problem, please contact our musical director David Ballard as a lift may be possible. More information from DavidBallard@hotmail.co.uk or telephone 07785 782498.

1917 Cromer lifeboat rescue to feature in RNLI’s national WW1 exhibition
The Cromer RNLI lifeboat rescue of the Pyrin and Fernebo, which saw 33 people saved from the sea on 9 January 1917, is to feature in an RNLI national touring exhibition commemorating the centenary of World War One (WW1). The charity’s exhibition, funded by Arts Council England, is called Hope in the Great War, and will honour the courage and bravery of the lifeboat crew who risked their lives to save others during WW1.
Becky Fletcher, RNLI Heritage Project Co-ordinator explains ‘The outstanding efforts by Cromer’s RNLI volunteers to save lives in WW1 will now be given a national voice. Although many details are already known about the Pyrin and Fernebo rescues, finding personal memories and connections would undoubtedly be of further inspiration.
‘We’re involving the community in other ways too – locally, the RNLI is teaming up with members of the 1st Cromer Sea Scouts to create a piece of artwork for the tour. They are creating a stained glass interactive game which will feature within the exhibition.’
Karen Drury, Scout Leader at the 1st Cromer Sea Scouts says ‘The Pyrin and Fernebo rescue story for us is a very proud moment in Cromer’s history. We feel immensely privileged to be involved in such an important project and by helping to share the Cromer rescue with the rest Cromer RNLI lifeboat Louisa Heartwell on its carriage. of the nation. Cromer Bells Project
With nearly £60,000 raised or anticipated, organisers of the Cromer Bells Project have got a £10,000 gap to fill and have been looking at new ways of raising money to complete the project.
Maureen Gardiner explains ‘each bell has a special set of fittings which hold it in the oak bell frame. These range from its headstock and wheel to smaller items like the clapper and the bearings. Each bell is going to be fitted with a brand new set,

so we can offer the opportunity to sponsor one of these. A headstock would cost £1000, a bell wheel £500, a set of bearings or a clapper £200 each. We would engrave a brass plate to be fixed to the fitting or the bell frame close by, recording the gift. We also plan to give each sponsor a rather nice small wall clock with a face in the shape of a bell wheel, made by a skilled wood joiner who's also a bell ringer. These are gifts that would be in use for the next 80 – 100 years, there for future generations to see. We will have eight bells, three of which will have specific dedications. The two new ones will carry dedications chosen by the people who are funding them. We also have a medieval bell with a dedication which translates as Now Gabriel being sent, bears joyful tidings to Holy Mary so it's called the Gabriel bell. That leaves five and we've been speculating about inviting suggestions - the Carnival Bell, the Lifeboat Bell, the Town Bell, for instance. Bell ringers may club together for a Ringers's Bell. I haven't yet worked out how to tie that in with sponsorship, and perhaps it's a separate thing, because the cost of sponsoring all the fittings for a bell (including wheel and headstock) comes to around £3000, but the idea of asking readers what they'd like is appealing’. Anybody who would like to get in touch with Maureen can email her at cromertower@fastmail.fm or phone 01263 825779.

Overstrand Evening WI
The emotive topic of our September talk, ‘Dealing with Dementia’, attracted a number of visitors as well as members to the meeting on the 18th. Member, Mrs Vivienne Hastings, presented an interesting and informative talk, based on her own experiences of dealing with dementia. She outlined the three main types and covered the typical progress through the different stages. Currently there are 820,000 dementia patients in the UK and with an increasing aged population, dementia is something we may all have to deal with or face. By the end of Vivienne’s talk we all had a better understanding of this progressive condition and how to deal with difficult situations.
On 8 October we will be hosting the ‘Brass Tray Quiz’, as well as entering a team into the Quiz. Our October meeting will be on Wednesday 16th when we will be celebrating our groups 30th Birthday and Jenny Rose will be giving a talk on Worstead Weavers, Spinners & Dyers. On 18 October, there will be an autumnal walk in the grounds of Blickling Hall. Any ladies who would like to join us should meet at the Hall’s car park at 10.30 a.m. We welcome visitors to our meetings - these are on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall, Overstrand.
Cromer WI
We started our meeting with a minute silence for Dorothy Holborrow who sadly passed away during the summer break. Miriam, our President, welcomed everybody back especially our visitors, one of whom had only just arrived from the USA the day before. Our speaker this month was Julie Davies and she gave us a demonstration of how to dress a crab. We also learned quite a few facts about crabs along the way. Two of our members had a go themselves and did really well, they ended up with crab for tea and also one member took home the one that Julie had prepared. The hall had a lovely aroma when we left! Plans were put forward to go to the Ely Christmas Food festival in November and the pantomime at Dirham, we even arranged to go to the theatre next year in May. We asked members to think about joining the Committee when we have our meeting in November and if anyone would be interested in having a float in the Carnival next year. Our competition of an Autumn painting was won by Jill Betz. New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2.30pm (in the New Year our start time will change to 2pm) in the Community Hall in Garden Street.

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb challenges Vodafone Chief Exec over signal failures
Norman Lamb has written to the Chief Executive of Vodafone, Guy Lawrence, to challenge Vodafone over its continued signal problems on the North Norfolk Coast. The local MP was made aware of the problems after two constituents contacted him to say they had been without signal for three days.
In his letter, Norman Lamb commented that “For there to have been yet another significant loss of service for Vodafone customers after the disruption that has already occurred recently is incredibly frustrating for customers. I also do not think it is acceptable. I would be grateful in the first instance if you could confirm what steps are being taken to rectify the problem as a matter of urgency. I would also be grateful if you could arrange for a senior representative of Vodafone UK to meet with me in North Norfolk to discuss steps that can be taken to improve the resilience of your network to ensure that this does not happen again”.
Norman Lamb met with representatives of the Countryside Alliance, who are running a “Sick of No Signal” campaign in rural areas to urge networks to improve their signal in the countryside.

Bodham Big Weekend to hand out £4,500 to charity this weekend Bodham Big Weekend will proudly hand over grants totalling £4,500 to eight local charities and organisations from monies raised at this year’s event.
Bodham Big Weekend which took place in July, saw over a 1,000 people entertained over the three day event which played host to an array of events for all the family including Rock Bodham.
At Bodham Big Weekend’s recent AGM the committee decided to donate £750 apiece to the East Anglian Children's Hospice (EACH) and The East Anglian Air Ambulance with Bodham Church, Village Hall and Playing field each receiving £500. Holt Community First Responders, who this year provided a defibrillator for the village, will also receive £500. A further £1000 will be spent on a Christmas Dinner for Bodham's over 70s and a Christmas Party for the village’s children.

Photo: Robin Myerscough Speaking after the meeting, new chairman John Paul Ringer expressed his delight that they are able to give away a record amount this year, and paid tribute to outgoing committee members, in particular outgoing Chairman Peter Bedell and Treasurer Anne Green. He said "After a hard year of preparation and planning, it is so rewarding to have seen the
The cheques will be handed over to representatives of the local charities at a special party hosted by Bodham's Red Hart Inn on 5 October where local band The Yow Yows will provide the entertainment. All are welcome, particularly all the volunteers who helped with the event, and those wishing to get involved or find out more about next year’s event.
At the presentation event the dates for the 2014 event will also be announced. The new committee have already announced that in 2014 the Rock Bodham music event will move from its traditional Sunday evening slot, becoming an all day, extended event on the Saturday.

CREMATORIUM AT CROMER CEMETERY
Cromer Town Council and Westerleigh Group will be hosting a drop in consultation event in respect of the forthcoming planning application for a crematorium to be built at the back of Cromer Cemetery.
The plans will be on display in the Council Chamber at North Lodge, Overstrand Road, Cromer from 10am to 1pm on 21 to 25 October. Mr Adrian Britton from Westerleigh Group will be present all day on 24 October to answer any questions from members of the public.
If anyone is unable to attend and has any questions please contact the Town Council office on 01263 512254 or email admin@cromertown.org and your queries will be forwarded to Mr Britton.
Cromer Town Mayor David Pritchard said “Along with the Town Clerk, I have been working with Westerleigh for over 18 months to achieve this moment. Cromer is so close to getting a Crematorium which will greatly benefit bereaved families.
He continued “The display of plans and photographs will give everyone an opportunity to visualise the completed facility and to raise any queries they have prior to the formal planning application.
Wet Dog Takes a Dive!
Phil Weston, owner of Wet Dog in Cromer, will soon be pushing himself well out of his comfort zone to help raise money for the much needed Cromer Skate Park when he completes a Skydive!!
Having spent many years coaching Youth Football, Phil is very keen on seeing both boys and girls of all ages and abilities follow their passions and desires and pursue their hobbies in the best surroundings with the best facilities and most of all with friends and other like-minded people.
"Let’s face it," says Phil, "we all know kids tend to get a rough deal in general these days. They can’t gather in groups, wear what they want or enjoy their favourite pastime without getting some stick from someone. This Skate Park is a must not just for the guys who want to use it, but Cromer as well – it will create a great place for people to meet, and to practise their sport, whether it is Boarding, Scooter or BMX, but it will also create another great ‘draw’ for the town – look at the success of the Mundesley and Sheringham Parks."
Phil and wife Kay meet a lot of the guys in the shop as they look at the latest gear, and have got to know many of them well. "They are great kids, polite, well behaved and well-spoken, but above all show real passion for their sport," enthused Kay.
Phil is currently looking for sponsors for his jump and although very grateful to those who have already donated, he desperately wants more to sponsor him.
If you would like to help this great cause please get in touch with Phil or Kay on 01263 519703 or email wetdog@btconnect.com and pledge what you can – it just to see the video!

Cromer’s Soldiers - re-discovering the past the Cromer branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) has announced exciting new plans to mark the 100th Anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.
Cromer, like towns across the country sent many men to fight on the front lines during the Great War but the loss of these men was a heavy price to pay for small communities like Cromer.
In honour of their memory the Cromer Branch of the Royal British Legion have a launched a new project to track down the relatives of those men who lost their lives in 1914-18 and create an exhibition which showcases the lives and families of these men before going to War. Local archives show that little information is held on these men and the RBL are turning to the local community for help in finding out more about them and their lives before the War. 26
John Needham, Chairman of the Cromer RBL today said “We’re asking local people to re-discover their family history and find out whether they had a relative who died in the First World War and to tell us their story”.
Robin Lilley, Vice-chairman of the Cromer RBL added “Cromer lost 88 men during WWI and they have ancestors living in Cromer today. We want to tell the story of these men - where they lived, what they did, the part they played in our community - and we need local residents help to tell it sharing family histories, photographs and family tales to celebrate the lives of these men who gave so much to our town”.
The Cromer RBL plan will also be approaching local schools to encourage them to plan lessons next year to get local children involved in finding out more about their ancestor’s role in winning WWI.

65 extra frontline staff for north Norfolk's ambulance service
'Act on Ambulances' campaigners have welcomed the promise of 65 extra front-line staff here after the ambulance trust pledged to treat north Norfolk as a priority area.
The campaign, started by North Norfolk Labour Party, was launched after concerns about response times in the area over a year ago. GLASS DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR

Dear Margaret,
May I take this opportunity of thanking all who supported this year's Cromer Carnival, including Children's Weeks. For the first time in many years, we were able to rely on warm, sunny weather throughout the week. This ensured that we were able to complete the full programme including the aerial displays. After the disappointment of not getting the Red Arrows and the negative comments made by a few, I have had nothing but positive remarks about both the Blades and the Wildcats – a different and excellent alternative to the Red Arrows. We will be applying for the Red Arrows for 2014.
A family run traditional tea room with lace table cloths and Blue Willow china.
James and Max Morris 7 Hamilton Road, Cromer, Norfolk NR27 9HL 01263 514894
Events for Children's Weeks and Carnival Week were all well attended and supported. On behalf of all the children and parents, who attended Children's Weeks a big “thank you,” to Libby and Tony. The first ever Duck Race off the Pier was extremely successful and will, I am sure, be included in next year's programme.
Other new events in this year's programme included a jazz concert by the River Falls Saxophone Quintet, Wrestling and the Pitch and Putt Championship, with thanks to Joe and Amanda Cook for organising the latter on our behalf. All were successful and enthusiastically enjoyed by those who attended and took part.
We were lucky enough to have a number of new helpers joining the Carnival team and I would like to thank them and all of the “team', without whom Cromer Carnival would not happen. It takes a huge effort in setting up and moving equipment around before, during and after the week. The more people involved in this lightens the load for those already committed to helping. Thanks to Paul Brooks and Phillip (Biscuit) Overall for organising your team so professionally.
Carnival Day was once again the highlight of the week with a packed showground during the day and even larger crowds in the town to watch the parade in the evening. The number of floats was slightly down on last year, when I feel we benefited from the enthusiasm to take part generated by the Queen's 60th anniversary celebrations and the success of the London Olympics. However, a big “thank you”, to all who took part. Next year Cromer VEO will be celebrating 45 years of Cromer carnivals. Let’s make that another bumper parade.
For the first time this year we had a musical finale to the fireworks display, which was agreed by all I have spoken to, as one of the best displays we have seen in carnival week.
As a voluntary organisation we rely heavily on the generosity of the public our sponsors and advertisers. May I once again thank you on behalf of all involved in Cromer Carnival, for your generosity and support. Thanks also for the support given by North Norfolk District Council, Kier, Cromer Town Council, St. John Ambulance and the East of England Ambulance Service, the Cromer RNLI, the Coastguard and Cromer Fire Station.
The Carnival committee work hard to try and include events for all age groups during the week. I hope we have succeeded, if not let us know and we will try to include your ideas for 2014.
To all who visited Cromer and the Carnival, I hope you enjoyed your stay in North Norfolk and look forward to seeing you again next year. Carnival week runs from Saturday 16th to Friday 20th August 2014, with Carnival Day on Wednesday 20th (always the 3rd Wednesday in August).
Thank you for making it a wonderful Carnival 2013. Tony Shipp MBE Chairman

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club
other of just seven ends each and in the end I am pleased to say Cromer Marrams emerged as winners. A good day was had by all which was followed by plates of sandwiches, buns and swill roll and cups of tea and coffee. It is hoped that the competition will be played at a different venue each year. In a morning roll up Jack the Artist managed a Hat Trick of wrong bias bowls - now that must be a record. This was closely followed by two from Les using borrowed bowls, but we do not think that can really be an excuse.
Tales from the Bowling Green ...
... and I can report a success on the Cawston green in the Floodlight Cup. In the final against Lenwade Bridge BC Cromer won on all three rinks win the cup 75 – 60, so congratulations to Captain John and his team. A Ladies Federation Competition was held at the club and was a great success. Teams from Cromer, Erpingham, Holt, Mill Farm, Suffield Park, Sheringham Morley and Swanton Morley played a series of triples games against each

Jams and Chutneys
Most of the club finals have been completed and it has been a successful season in all the Men’s singles finals for Roger Greef. In the Men’s 4 Wood Singles and in what was actually a close game of bowls he defeated Brian Beaumont 21 – 14. The 2 Wood Single final also went his way when he won 21 – 17 against Peter Bird. Roger had a further success against Peter in the Over 60s Final which saw him win 21 – 15. Finally in the Handicap Singles, and although having to give David Ealden a 9 shot start, he managed to win 22 – 15. The Men’s Triples competition was played on a Round Robin basis the eventual winners being David Ealden, Bernard Crow and Brian Beaumont with Runners Up Peter Bird, John Porthouse and Bob Allard.. The Pairs saw Peter Bird and Bob Allard prove successful against Neil Carswell and Brian Beaumont 30 -12. The most remarkable game of all the finals was the Fours. A rink skipped by Bob Allard took an early lead against Brian Beaumont and his quartet. In fact after 4 ends Bob lead 9-0. Brian then scored a 1, 3 and 1 against Bobs 1 to cut the deficit to 5. Bob then scored a 3 and a 2 to move 10 shots ahead. Over the next 5 ends shots were shared so after 15 of the 21 ends Bob was still 10 shots ahead at 19-9.The next end proved pivotal. Holding one shot Brian took out Bob’s second wood to give his rink 5 shots. This was followed by a 3 and the score was 19-17. Bob replied with a single but Brian immediately came back
with a count of 4. After 19 ends, two to go, the score was even 21-21. It was tense on the green. Bob scored a 1 to go into the final end just that one shot in front. The final end went to Brian and his rink by 2 shots and they were in front for the first and only time in the winning a truly wonderful game 23 – 22.Rinks: Peter Bird, David Mocock, Neil Carswell, and Brian Beaumont. David Ealden, Bernard Crow, Graham Hall, and Bob Allard. The Ladies of the club had two competitions to complete. In the Ladies 4 Wood Singles Sue Ealden beat Kay Hazelwood 22 – 7 and then teamed up with newcomer Jackie Purvis in the Ladies Pairs to win 25 – 15. The Mixed Pairs this year was also played on a round robin basis. The winners were Roger Greef and Mrs Susan Ealden, the Runners Up Brian Beaumont and Mrs Marion Beaumont.
The club will have closed the green by the time you read this but there are some social activities that will go on throughout the winter. The clubhouse will be open on Friday evenings from 7.00pm for members and guests. John the Birder will be holding a series of quizzes on some Friday evenings and Edna will also be testing our skills on some other Friday evenings. Various Food evenings are being planned and the weekly Cromer Marrams version of short short mat bowls starts on Wednesday 2nd October in the clubhouse. Yes that is not a typing error, our mat is very very short! A nominal charge of £1.00 goes towards lighting, heating and a cup of tea and a biscuit.
I do like our style of quiz. At the start of the evening, using playing cards, teams of three or four, depending on numbers attending are selected at random for each of the four rounds of the evening quiz. You therefor sit with different people for each of the rounds, unless you are unlucky. The winners of the round get three points each, the second two each, and everyone else one point. The scores are recorded and carried on through the winter being added to as the quizzes continue. The overall winners will be declared in April when sometimes a Grand Final is held.
significant future dates:Friday october 4th 8.00pm John’ first quiz
Wednesday october 9th 2.00pm short short mat bowls and thereafter on a weekly basis Friday october 25th 8.00pm - soup night
I think that is all for this season. So hopefully will be back next year. Peter Bird, 01263 512120

Lots to bid for at Charity Auction
From tickets to the Cromer Pier Christmas Show to a cricket bat signed by the English cricket captain and the Essex team to a signed first edition of the book ‘The Casual Vacancy’ from J K Rowling, the White Horse Charity Auction in Overstrand on Saturday 12 October in aid of Nelson’s Journey is sure to attract a great deal of interest.
The cricket bat, donated and signed by England cricket captain Alastair Cook and the rest of the Essex Cricket Team, has already created quite a bit of interest and is sure to by one of the star lots. Also attracting interest is the book ‘The Casual Vacancy’ written by JK Rowling under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. As a signed first edition it will perhaps in the future realise a considerable return.
The Charity Auction on 12 October is accompanied by a 3-course pre auction dinner with £5 from every ticket being donated to the charity. Tickets cost £35 per person and are on sale now at the White Horse. Strictly limited to 85 people guests will be treated to pre dinner drinks and canapés upon arrival at 7pm with the dinner commencing at 7.30pm before the auction at 9pm. Brewers Greene King who are supporting the event have already donated a keg of their IPA with a free pint being offer to all those attending the auction. They have also agreed to sponsor the event, which will allow
commitments to their Charity of the Year, Nelson’s Journey, a charity dedicated to supporting bereaved children and young people throughout Norfolk.
the White Horse to advertise the event to an even wider audience. Still to be announced by Greene King are the other lots that they will be donating to the auction.
Based in Norwich the charity was founded in 1997 and has to date helped over 1,500 children between the ages of 0 to 17 inclusive who have experienced the death of a significant person in their life. In the case of very young children this is by giving support and advice to the remaining parent or guardians.
Greene King Sales Development Manager Andrew Galpin said “We are delighted to have been asked to support this great event and to help raise money for such an important charity. We wish the White Horse and everyone involved the very best of luck and hope that it will raise ‘lots’ of money”.
Amongst the other lots already promised are tickets to a meeting at Fakenham Race Course, a food hamper, tickets for two to Newmarket races with access to the owners ring, a framed Norwich City shirt signed by the team and a year’s swimming pass from Woodlands Leisure.
Darren Walsgrove owner of the White Horse said “This is a really exciting event and I am delighted with the support it has already received - we have high hopes that it will raise a considerable amount of money and help boost our fundraising for Nelson’s Journey. My thanks to Greene King and all those how have already supported the event with items for the auction. I know there are still more to come so everyone at the White Horse is hoping for a really great evening”.
The event is part of the White Horse’s year long fundraising

The name Nelson’s Journey was chosen to inspire and reflect the two main aspects of the charity - it is local, hence the use of Norfolk’s own Admiral Nelson, while ‘Journey’ was chosen as bereavement is a journey which begins the minute your loved one dies and lasts a lifetime. The work that the group begun 15 years ago continues to develop and reaches new highs each year.
Entirely dependent on donations from individuals, groups, trusts and organisations, as well as money raised by their own fundraising events, Nelson’s Journey’s vision is of a Norfolk where no bereaved child has to cope alone with their loss and has the support they need to move forward positively with their lives.
Full details of all the lots will be available at the White Horse from Friday 4 october. sealed bids will be accepted until Friday 11 october and will be opened on the night when the lots are being auctioned.
