Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent

THE A TEAM The Physics Department at Cromer Academy is the A Team with 52% of their Year 10s attaining A*-A GCSEs.

This comes on top of their Year 11 results when 66% achieved A*-A GCSEs. Both year groups received 100% A*-Cs, the Government benchmark.

Mrs Eileen Cole, Head of Science, said ‘There’s no silver bullet, rather lots of hard work and dedicated staff. We have the bonus at Cromer of smaller classes, so we can give students personal attention, holding revision and 1-1 sessions every holiday’.

‘Capturing and stimulating the interest of students is all important. Dr Ben Bestwick, one of our science teachers, took a party of students to see the CERN particle-accelerator in Switzerland last year and we are going again this year. The students were inspired by what they saw’

Cromer Academy is part of the Inspiration Trust.

CROMER ACADEMY GIRLS CRICKET CLUB

Cromer Academy has launched its first ever girls cricket club. The Academy has been signed up by the Norfolk Cricket Board to be one of their flagship schools in a county wide programme of schools’ cricket clubs.

about a coach turning up in school and taking a few coaching sessions. This requires students to run their own club, from having a committee set up and having regular meetings, to fund raising and publicising events and activities within the school and wider community’. ‘The girls have their own budget for the year, and they need to decide how to best spend the money. I’ll be there to guide them, but at the end of the day, the decisions in how the club will run, will come down to the girls themselves. We link the course in with other subjects, so we have students involved who aren’t there to play Cricket, but support their friends who do want to enjoy the game. Our first session saw students with an interest in ICT, Maths, and Art, all turning up offering to

Kieron Tuck, Cricket Development Officer for the Board, visited the school with ECB coach Tom Davies to introduce the programme and complete the formalities before the big launch this month.

Thirty girls have so far signed up to the venture and received their first coaching session with Sky Sports Coach of the Year nominee Davies. He was very keen to stress the importance of teaching students key skills outside of the game of Cricket. ‘This programme isn’t just

be part of the club and they will all have a role to play. We will also be linking up with a local club, and getting into Junior School with a newly trained Cricket Leaders, as well as entering tournaments and competitions.

The funding for the project comes from the English Cricket Board and is aimed at encouraging more people to take up cricket. More details on this project are available from the Academy.

CROMER ACADEMY SPONSORED WALK

Students, staff, governors and families all got together for the bi-annual Cromer Academy Sponsored Walk, raising funds for local charities and school projects.

The 10 mile event around the villages and footpaths of North Norfolk provides members of the school with an opportunity to give something back to the local community. This year’s causes were the East Anglian Air Ambulance and Cromer based charity ‘About with Friends’. Students were met at their lunch point, Southrepps Church, by local East

Anglian Air Ambulance fund raiser, Jamie Edgehill, who provided banners and balloons to add a real party atmosphere to the day. Morrisons supermarket provided refreshments around the route to ensure the students were kept hydrated in the warm temperatures.

It really was a whole school effort with everyone in the school having a role to play, whether it was marshalling out on the route, or walking alongside students. Even the school canteen had a change of venue for the day, with the whole operation moving into the beautiful surroundings of

OVERSTRAND GARDEN CLUB

This month’s meeting welcomed Mr. Tony Leech speaking on the subject of ‘Fungi’. Mr Leech described himself as a naturalist from an early age, taking an interest in and wanting to know more about the things he saw around him. Professionally he became a biologist and occasionally taught.

Throughout an informative and colourful slide show presentation, Mr. Leech talked about the reproductive and feeding cycles of various fungi. It was interesting to learn that some forms of tree fungi, normally known for their contribution to the decaying process can actually extend the life and health of certain trees.

Forty-one people attended the meeting which was introduced by the chairman, Dr. Joe Gaston. After some opening remarks, one of the events secretaries outlined the programme for 2014 which among other things will have speakers talking on subjects from ‘The Gardens in April’ to ‘The Secret Life of a Norfolk Wood’. In addition, there may be trips to Kew and Wisley gardens in June and the Ben Potterton nursery in September.

Following the meeting, there was a short question and answer period before refreshments were served.

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club

The lunch meeting on 2 October was held, as usual, at the Links Hotel in West Runton. The Chairman, Dave Vickery, welcomed Mike Osborne to the club as a new member, having previously attended twice as a visitor. Dave also confirmed that a speaker has now been arranged for next April, so the programme for the year ending next June is all in place.

There was a change to the advertised speaker as the warden booked had left Pensthorpe. Another warden, Darren Williams was drafted in as a result. It was his first formal presentation but it did not show and the audience were impressed by his knowledge and enthusiasm.

Darren encouraged us all to visit Pensthorpe gardens, especially if we had not been before. He particularly recommended the Land Rover tours which he usually conducts!

In November we will have the benefit of two speakers coming to give a joint presentation about The Mardler talking newspaper. Jack Chapman is the Listeners’ Liaison Officer and Jolyon Booth is the Chief Recordist at The Mardler. They will describe the service they provide to blind and visually impaired people in North Norfolk and Broadland as well as the people and processes required to deliver it.

Recent new members have found us welcoming so, if you are interested, contact Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 for more information and to arrange to attend one of our monthly meetings. There is no obligation to join immediately - come and give it a try, then decide if you wish to attend regularly.

Gresham’s lends a hand to local charity North Norfolk Young Carers

Gresham’s School in Holt is delighted to announce their charity of the year for 2013/14 will be North Norfolk Young Carers.

Last year Gresham’s chosen charity was The Norfolk Hospice, Tapping House, where pupils and staff took part in a number of fundraising events which resulted in excess of £12,000 being raised.

This year the School is delighted to be working alongside Julie Alford – Manager, Youth Consultant and Senior Youth Worker at the award winning Holt Youth Project where a number of Lower Sixth Form pupils from Gresham’s will give their time supporting young carers.

North Norfolk Young Carers is a very important charity, providing respite time and support to young people who, for a variety of reasons, find themselves caring for a family member at home. The charity provides opportunities for them to take part in a range

of activities as well as providing them with a meal giving them a much needed break from their busy lives. Currently one in twelve young people find themselves in a caring role in their family environment and one of the aims of this charity is to reach out to as many young people in the community and provide them with some support.

Julie Alford of The Holt Youth Project said, “Young carers is a very important part of our work. We deliver sessions on a regular basis to two groups of young carers, 6-11 year olds and the 12-18 year olds. We try to provide these very special young people with activities, programmes, mentoring and support, which they may not otherwise have because of their caring role within their family environment. It has made a huge difference to the young carers we serve for them to meet with other young people in a similar situation.”

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon

With Christmas just a few weeks away we are now taking bookings for Christmas parties and have our Christmas Day Luncheon and New Years Eve Dinner Menus freely available at the pub or if you prefer sent to you in the post.

Christmas is always a busy time for us and by the level of enquiries we have already received it looks as if we are going to have a very full pub throughout December.

Our Steak and Pie Nights every Wednesday evening until the 20th November are proving to be very popular and I will certainly be thinking about bringing them back early in the new year.

But before we get to Christmas we have our Halloween Party Night to look forward to. It’s always a great night with lots of people arriving in fancy dress and of course enjoying the live music which this year is from a band with a very large following ‘Blonde Horizon’ who will be performing in the bar from around 8.30pm until late. Don’t forget if you have are planning a Christmas party for you and your work mates or a get together with family and friends that for larger parties we offer a free Cromer Times 432 October 19th 2013

disco as part of our Christmas party Nights so it is certainly worth having a word with us before you make your final decision.

nATHAn boon’S rECiPE For rED onion JAM

ingredients 4 large red onions finely sliced, 1 cup red wine vinegar 6 tbls sugar 1 cinnamon stick water to cover if required seasoning

Method Peel and finely slice onions, add these to the rest of the ingredients in a saucepan. Simmer on a low heat, stirring occasionally. Add more sugar if required. Remove from heat when a jam consistency is achieved. Allow to cool and store in sealed jars in the fridge. It’s a great jam to have in the house, its versatility makes it an ideal accompaniment to roasts, bacon or cheese sandwiches or simply add a spoonful to your favourite snack. Stored in a Kilner or similarly sealed jar in will last for months.

Many young people are unaware of the charity and the help and support it can give to young people undertaking a caring role. The charity is keen to raise awareness to children and young people across North Norfolk that help is available to them. If you know someone who might benefit or if you are a young carer looking for support in North Norfolk, then please get in touch.

EAAA Fundraiser

May I on behalf of the East Anglian Air Ambulance thank everyone who supported our charity on Saturday 24 September at Woodlands Caravan Park, Holt Road, Upper Sheringham where £663.35 was raised at a coffee morning, sale of cakes etc, raffle, donations and a 1940 Evening.

EAAA are very grateful for the support given to a very valuable service. I would like to thank Dougie and William Wright for allowing us to fundraise at Woodlands Caravan Park.

I would also like to thank Bridget Mayes and all the people in the photograph who gave up their time to make this a very successful event. Once again many thanks to you all.

Jamie Edghill, North Norfolk Area Volunteer Fundraiser for EAAA

Cornet or Trumpet - What’s The Difference? Noooo! You don’t lick one and blow the other.

For those who may not know, they are two musical instruments which are almost the same thinking about it, you could put a huge dollop of ice cream in the bell of a cornet and… phew, what a blow out! Seriously though, the difference between the two is in the shape of the tube through which the air travels to produce the notes. The result is that the cornet has a more mellow tone than the trumpet, which produces a sharper sound.

While cornets, and not trumpets, are the choice of brass bands, there are many musicians who play both, as do some of the bandsmen/women of the Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band.

But hey, to hear what a cornet sounds like why not come along at 7.30pm to the Band’s Concert at St Peters Church, Sheringham, on Saturday 26 October. The concert is being held to raise funds for renovation of the Church. Admission is free, although any contribution you would like to make to the retirement collection would be very much appreciated.

Finally, if you feel that deep inside you there lurks the desire to learn to play a cornet, or any other brass band instrument come to that, why not have a chat with a member of the band on the evening of the Concert. Alternatively, visit our web site below. Remember you are never too old, or too young, to learn to play. See you on the 26 October at St Peter’s Church.

NURSE CLINICS

Royal British Legion Cromer & District Branch Cromer 2013 remembrance

rededication of Field of remembrance Church Ground in Churchyard of Cromer Parish Church will take place on Wednesday 30 october 2013 at 10.45am (Service in churchyard only).

Our nurse clinics are designed with you and your pets in mind. Whether you are thinking of getting a pet and are not sure what breed to choose, or you want some help and advice with an existing pet, our nurses are here to help for FREE!

Nurse clinics are run daily at our Sheringham and Cromer surgeries, booking is essential as these clinics do get busy, for Sheringham call 01263 822293 or for Cromer call 01263 513976.

CLINIC TYPES

• New pet – advice prior to choosing your new pet from breed type, approximate cost and training. • One to one puppy and kitten clinics – monthly appointments to monitor the progress of your pet and discuss any issues you may have along the way. • Monthly weigh and worm clinics – for puppies, kittens and older pets, bring them along and let the nurses take the stress out of getting that tablet down! • Weight clinics – got a portly pet? Come along for an assessment – we promise not to tell you off! Our nurses are trained to assess body condition and manage weight loss at a healthy level. With monthly appointments we are able to monitor progress and adjust the plan accordingly making our plans individually tailored to your pets specific needs. • Dental checks - a 6 monthly invitation to get your pets mouth assessed, our nurses are trained to spot signs of gum disease or other common problems – imagine if you didn’t clean your teeth every day – we are here to help prevent problems occurring . • Senior clinics – a hugely popular clinic targeting the older pets as they enter their twilight years. Covering topics such as free blood pressure testing and blood analysis for kidney or liver problems at a reduced cost, this thorough clinic can help rule potential problems out or offer fast treatment to anything detected (Please note – nurses are unable to diagnose conditions by law and referral may be required to the vet – this will be at a reduced cost if booked through the senior clinic). • Suture removal and post-operative assessments – after surgery animals need to be monitored to make sure healing is progressing and completed. Usually 2 appointments are sufficient with the nurse signing the animal off after suture removal. • Arthritis clinics – keeping the older generation of pets moving and comfortable we are able to assist with the correct medication and dosage as well as an individually tailored exercise plan, with monthly or 6 monthly monitoring depending on circumstance this clinic will keep up with the changes experienced by older pets. • Pet Health Plans checks – our monthly payment plan, spreading the cost of your annual booster injections, worm and flea treatment. These clinics concentrate on keeping your pet well and up to date with preventative healthcare.

Following the Remembrance Sunday 10 November 2013 Church Service, the band will play solemn music as wreaths are laid on the War Memorial, then one verse of Abide with Me to conclude.

Albion Revival

Last February, Steve and Jane took over the Albion pub in Church Street Cromer determined to make a difference and turn the pub around and it looks like their warm and friendly welcome is bringing back the customers.

So far in the refurbishment, they have redecorated the interior, had the cellar stripped and new equipment installed and for what they believe is the first time installed a kitchen so that clients can have fresh-cooked food.

And there is more to come - the exterior needs substantial overhaul and this is currently planned for the winter time.

The kitchen has 5 stars awarded by the NNDC and they are offering a special meal offer at £4.90, which includes Sunday Lunch.

For the beer drinkers, they have also managed to obtain Cask Marque Real Ale, one of only two pubs in the town that have their beers (three varieties, but hope for more) and Carlsberg lager and Bass bitter are both on offer at £2.80.

Games players will be pleased to know there are two ladies/men's darts teams and two pool teams already established.

"We have really enjoyed our first few months," commented Steve. "We are getting very positive response from our customers, who really did not want to see the pub disappear, which was really likely until we took over."

"It's been hard work for the few months that we've been here," said Jane, "but it has been well worth it. And it's going to get even better. We will continue to offer good value beer and food in a traditional pub atmosphere, just what most of our customers want."

Cromer Carnival celebrates another successful year

On Wednesday 25 September Cromer VEO held their annual presentation evening to mark the end of year’s Carnival and to celebrate all the participants and winners who made the Carnival such a success.

Hosted by Chairman Tony Shipp, the event, which was held at The Cottage in Cromer, brought together many of the people who organised the Carnival as well as those who took part in many of the 120 events that formed the 2013 event.

Tony Shipp welcomed everyone to the evening before saying “everyone here to receive an award tonight is representative of all those who have taken part in the Carnival this year. Thank you for all the effort you have put in, without you there would not be a Carnival. The Carnival is all about getting involved and taking part”.

The Norman & Hilda Troller Cup was collected by Cromer Academy for their float Back to the 80s and Cromer Dialysis Unit picked up the Randall Cup for their popular Red Arrows entry.

Tony Shipp closed the evening by thanking those who took part in this year’s Carnival and those present on the night for continuing to support the Carnival’s events.

Looking forward to next year he said “2014 is the 45th anniversary of the Carnival organised by Cromer VEO. We are hoping for a big turnout in all aspects of the event to make it a really spectacular year.”

CROMER FLOWER CLUB

In September Jackie O’Hare demonstrated to the Club and her title was ‘Like a Magpie’. Her designs were based around her collection of containers she had acquired or had given to her but she felt unable to throw away. Her foliage and flowers were lovely and all the arrangements were raffled to the delight of the ladies present.

Jackie judged the club competition and best in show was Jenny Pawson. Our next meeting will be on Monday 21 October at 7.30pm at Cromer Junior School with Barbara Collins demonstrating ‘A Taste of the Orient’. Visitors are free in October Cromer Times 432 October 19th 2013

Another Vodafone signal blackout hits the issue of poor mobile phone coverage in rural parts of North Norfolk areas at Labour Party conference in Brighton in

Vodafone users in north norfolk experienced another three day "black out" of mobile phone coverage at the end of September following more technical problems at their transmitter in West runton.

Customers in Sheringham, Cromer and North Walsham took to the Vodafone internet forum to complain about more signal problems, with

In a statement to the party, Vodafone told them “We are sorry for the intermittent loss of coverage to some parts of North Norfolk. The air conditioning in the cabin at our site in West Runton became faulty which caused the site to shut down as the equipment overheated. This had a knock on effect to a number of other sites in the area as they link into the rest of the network through the West Runton site. We will continue to monitor the sites in the area to ensure that the coverage remains stable.”

North Norfolk Labour Party also complaining to Vodafone executives about the network failure and demanding that customers are compensated.

Denise Burke, North Norfolk Labour’s prospective parliamentary candidate, said “I have been inundated with messages from Vodafone customers who live in north Norfolk who have been let down by the company over the past 12 months.

This issue highlights the problems we are facing in rural north Norfolk with regards to mobile communication. Even in areas where there is reportedly a good signal the infrastructure is so outdated that the connections are unreliable.

Dear Margaret,

I feel I must write to answer the doom and gloom letter printed in your September issue from Ross Wordie.

As far as I am aware the NNR have no intention of running services between Sheringham and Norwich but only to extend the line to Melton Constable and then to Dereham as part of the coastal rail network.

It does however make sense to only have one station in town and I really think that the minimal disruption of two trains an hour will not bring the town to its knees .In any case any disruption could be minimised by implementing the one way system proposed some years ago, bringing traffic from a new mini roundabout on Weybourne Road down Church St then down The High Street then Wyndham Street and out of the town by way of Beeston road, with another mini roundabout on Cromer Road.

This would have the advantage of freeing up Station road for the relocation of both the Wednesday & Saturday markets and other events enabling more parking spaces to be available on market days, leading to more potential customers for the shopkeepers. As an aside, if our shopkeepers are so concerned regarding loss of trade, why were so many closed on the Sunday of the recent 40s weekend organised by The Lobster, in spite of the town heaving with ‘potential customers’.

I think on the whole our local councillors do a fairly good job but they could look at why some of the Common on the way to Beeston Bump is being fenced off by some of the houseowners along Nelson Road and also why there is no light working at the bottom of the black steps leading to East Beach from Vincent/ Cliff Road. I await their reply with interest .

Yours sincerely, Graham McEvoy, Sheringham

Dave Horsnell on 07787 533345

Dear Margaret,

When myself and colleagues met with senior management at Vodafone earlier this year we told them the problems customers in North Norfolk were experiencing were simply not good enough. Indeed, from their full page advertisement in newspapers it appeared they had taken on board that they needed to improve.

Six months on it only takes a quick search on Twitter, a look at the petition at www.vodafonenfk.com, or a glimpse at Vodafone's online forum to see that the company has a long way to go.

Failures with equipment, like the incident with the cooling fan over the weekend of 21/22 September or the power cut in July, I accept are often unavoidable. However, how you deal with these problems make all the difference. There is still a delay in Vodafone accepting and communicating the problem, dealing with quickly enough, and issuing compensation for inconvenience, when appropriate.

The outdated technology that is in place in rural areas also means that when one transmitter has a problem (for instance in West Runton) customers across the district also suffer (as far as North Walsham). In May Vodafone accepted this large relay infrastructure was not ideal and part of the problem.

So far the company has conceded that in September those connected to the Bacton transmitter suffered more than 3 days loss of coverage and therefore will be compensated - I recommend that they take this up - but I still believe they need to go further.

Vodafone made assurances to me that North Norfolk was on the map for improved technology which could also include significant 3G upgrades. This is welcome, but with on-going problems continuing to plague customers I would appeal to them to speed this process up. After all, how many customers will they be left with if they continue to offer a poor service in Norfolk? Jono Read Press Officer for North Norfolk Labour Party

Dear Margaret,

May I put your correspondent Ross Wordie right on one important point? The North Norfolk Railway is NOT behind the plans for a Norfolk Orbital Railway, and certainly does NOT intend to turn the Poppy Line ‘into just another link in a regular train service between Norwich and Holt or beyond’, as Mr Wordie alleges.

Absolutely not. It is the NNR’s firm intention and future strategy to focus on running the steam heritage railway between Sheringham and Holt. Any plans the Norfolk Orbital Railway and the Melton Constable Trust may have (if they ever come to fruition!) will need to fall in with that strategy, which will not be compromised.

The Poppy Line, as Mr Wordie says, is one of our major tourist attractions. This year it is set to carry well over 150,000 passengers, many of them people who come to Sheringham expressly to ride on the railway, and who afterwards spend time and money in the town.

That’s reality. The plans for a Norfolk Orbital Railway are, by contrast, so much “pie in the sky”.

And whatever those plans are, they do NOT, repeat NOT, come from the NNR. Colin Borg, North Norfolk Railway

CREMATORIUM AT CROMER CEMETERY Cromer Town Council and Westerleigh Group will be hosting a drop in consultation event in respect of the forthcoming planning application for a crematorium to be built at the back of Cromer Cemetery.

The plans will be on display in the Council Chamber at North Lodge, Overstrand Road, Cromer from 10am to 1pm on 21 to 25 October. Mr Adrian Britton from Westerleigh Group will be present all day on 24 October to answer any questions from members of the public.

If anyone is unable to attend and has any questions please contact the Town Council office on 01263 512254 or email admin@cromertown.org and your queries will be forwarded to Mr Britton.

Cromer Town Mayor David Pritchard said “Along with the Town Clerk, I have been working with Westerleigh for over 18 months to achieve this moment. Cromer is so close to getting a Crematorium which will greatly benefit bereaved families”.

He continued “The display of plans and photographs will give everyone an opportunity to visualise the completed facility and to raise any queries they have prior to the formal planning application”.

Staff at Waitrose North Walsham have volunteered to help local charity, the Southrepps Common Trust in the community.

Eight Waitrose Partners were involved with pruning overhanging branches and cutting back vegetation along boardwalks. They were also involved in pruning back the large holly tree by the bridge on the common & the clearing of scrub around the local bus shelter.

John Houlgate, Chairman of the Southrepps Common Trust said ‘On behalf of all the Southrepps Commons Trustees I would like to thank Waitrose for the great job you did today. You all seemed to bring along a professional & willing attitude which presumably characterises your real jobs in store’.

This is part of a Waitrose initiative called Partner Volunteering which allows Partners, as all employees are known, to take time out of their daily roles to volunteer their skills, experience and time to local causes.

Lynn Aldridge, Personnel Manager at Waitrose North Walsham said ‘It’s been great to help out Southrepps Common Trust today. Every year Waitrose North Walsham volunteers 250 hours to organisation, charities and causes in our local communities which have been nominated by customers’.

If you know of any local causes that are in need of a helping hand, you can get in touch or fill in an application form at the Welcome Desk of your local Waitrose.

Norman Lamb gets flu vaccine, and urges those at risk to take up their jab when offered • had a stroke or a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) • diabetes • a neurological condition, for example multiple sclerosis (MS) or cerebral palsy • a problem with your spleen, for example sickle cell disease, or you have had your spleen removed.

north norfolk MP and Health Minister norman Lamb visited the doctor himself last month to get his annual flu jab.

Because he has a history of asthma, and his work frequently takes him into hospitals and care homes, he was advised to get the jab by his GP.

Speaking beforehand, Norman Lamb said “I would urge anyone who thinks they might be at risk – and in particular those over 65, and pregnant women, to get the jab early. Flu is very different from just getting a cold – it can be a really serious illness, leading to prolonged stays in hospital and even death. Even if you had the jab last year, or have already had the flu, it’s important to get the vaccine this year because flu changes every year. Flu is caused by a virus rather than bacteria, so antibiotics don’t work once you are ill – and symptoms can come on very suddenly. As soon as your doctor gets in touch, take up the offer and get the vaccine.”

Summary of those who are recommended to have the flu vaccine: ■ everyone aged 65 and over

■ all pregnant women, at any stage of pregnancy

■ all two and three-year-old children

■ everyone under 65 years of age (but over six months) who has a serious medical condition, including: • a heart problem • a chest complaint or breathing difficulties, including bronchitis or emphysema • a kidney disease • lowered immunity due to disease or treatment (such as steroid medication or cancer treatment) • liver disease

■ everyone living in a residential or nursing home

■ everyone who cares for an older or disabled person

■ household contacts of anyone who is immunocompromised

■ all frontline health and social care workers

The final decision about whether you should receive the flu vaccine is made by your GP, looking at your medical history and other circumstances.

Local Artists’ Exhibition

Cromer artists, Leslie Hawkes Nockels and Des Clover, have work on show at a major NOVA (North Norfolk Organisation for Visual Artists) show entitled "NOVA EXPOSED” to celebrate the great new Atrium Gallery at North Walsham, 3 October - 6 November.

Leslie is showing “Salthouse”, originally began in 2007/8 and after many changes , it was quietly sidelined, its framing made it too big for her car – until NOVA this summer decided to have a selected exhibition of abstract or semi

abstract work. “Salthouse” was taken out of the frame, and she took a deep breath and repainted the marsh, the dipping countryside and the sky filled with skudding clouds, with a total non-representational expression of the fierce wind blowing over the marsh, the light, the shingle and the sea. Hence its title Salthouse: Wind, Marsh, Shingle, Sea – Inundation.

After Art School, Des Clover worked as a Graphic Designer and Book Illustrator for a London Publisher, followed by twenty five years as a Studio Potter in Cambridgeshire. He says ‘I have always painted but since moving to North Norfolk have been able to paint full-time. They will both also be taking part in COAST

Leslie Hawkes Nockels ‘Salthouse : Wind, Marsh, Shingle, Sea – Inundation’

– the Cromer and Sheringham Arts Festival 25 October to 3 November - her coast inspired paintings will be in a one man show at the Blue Sky Cafe, Runton Road, Cromer, and in the Nova exhibition Frieze Frame at the Garden House Gallery, 31 Garden Street, Cromer, 10am – 5pm.

Leslie and Des’ work will also be in Sheringham Library's “Sneak Preview” for COAST Festival running between 26 October and 3 November.

Cromer Artist Raises £29,300 for Charity in two Weeks

In only two weeks seven of Samuel Thomas’ commissioned animal sculptures were auctioned off for charity raising a collaborative sum of £29,300

On 19 September around 30 giraffe sculptures were auctioned off in Colchester, Essex, three of which were painted by Samuel and raised £9600. Fourteen days later on 3 October four gorillas were auctioned off in Norwich which were painted by Samuel, one of which sold for £7700. In total from both auctions Samuel raised a sum of £29,300 which will be donated to charity. On the same night around 50 gorillas were auctioned off raising an impressive total of £272,300. Charities that will benefit will be Break, Born Free to Wildlife conservation trusts and it is good to know that art work has an ability to reach different kinds of people in very different ways.

In fact it was this time last year when Samuel Thomas was first approached to take part in ‘GoGo Gorillas’ by the project manager Martin Green where they met at Samuel’s exhibition in Cromer. And after such a busy year that time has arrived again as Samuel’s seven-day-long exhibition opens on 25 October at the Red Lion Cromer.

‘It’s good to be back in Cromer after an eventful year all over the UK promoting my art work where I have been to Cornwall, Birmingham, Essex and Suffolk’ says Samuel who now plans to spend the winter working on new originals to keep up with demand and Brighton is his next focus to exhibit.

‘ESCAPOLOGY’ Exhibition: Samuel Thomas and David Morris have teamed up for a

collaborative show where stunning photography will be shown alongside originals and limited edition prints of Samuel’s. All of the work is available to purchase or leisurely browse. The two artists will also be showing slideshows exploring the theme of Escapism that runs throughout their work. There is also a ballot box where visitors can share their opinions and the best line formulated on escapism will win a £100 Art Gift Voucher.

Samuel and David have both captured Cromer and Norfolk in their very unique ways yet they have both captured the unique spirit and atmosphere of the place. Find out more about the exhibition by going online here: www.samuelthomasart.co.uk/bLoG The exhibition is open 25 october – 1 november 11am – 6pm in the Function room, red Lion, Cromer. Admission is free. Cromer Times 432 October 19th 2013
