Issue 433 2nd November 2013
Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent
CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY Three of the society’s members along with our president, Bill LeGrice from the garden centre at Wroxham Barns, went along to Erpingham Primary School to plant the tree that was their prize for winning the schools’ competition that we run each year. Members of staff, pupils and some parents watched as Bill planted a rowan tree with the help of some of the pupils. He kindly donates the prize each year and we thank him for his generosity. Schools from Kelling, Cromer, Sidestrand, Northrepps and North Walsham took part as well as Erpingham and this successful competition is now a fixture on the society’s calendar. Encouraging youngsters to take an interest in gardening is a role the society cherishes.

WE NEED YOU TODAY,
YOU MAY NEED US TOMORROW
The Constantia Cottage Restaurant in East Runton is once again hosting a three course dinner for East Anglian Air Ambulance on Thursday 21 November at 7pm.
The cost is £22.50 per person. As well as the dinner there will be entertainment from the Constantia Brothers, a raffle, an auction and a talk from an EAAA Representative.
The EAAA now has a helicopter flying at night as well as during the day. It costs around £7.6 million a year to provide this lifesaving service, which relies entirely on public support.
So please support this dinner and contact Val or John Laker on 01263 514509 or 07771 607097 for a ticket before 15 November to avoid disappointment
Special offer for new ‘brown bin’ customers
North Norfolk households are being given an opportunity to take advantage of a very special offer from North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) to help them prepare their gardens for winter, and to help reduce the amount of waste deposited in land-fill sites.
Over the next few months household residents will be able to order and pay for a garden waste bin for 2014/15, have it delivered within a few days and then pay nothing extra for its use until 1 April 2015.
Household residents living in the North Norfolk district can therefore take advantage of NNDC’s fortnightly garden waste collection service, which provides a 240 litre ‘brown’ bin that you can fill with both hard and soft garden waste, for up to 17 months for the price of 12, just £42.12. The offer applies to new customers or existing customers taking an extra bin.
NNDC Cabinet Member for Environment, John Lee, said, “Now’s the time many people start to clear up their gardens ready for the winter. This special promotion of the brown garden bins is one way we can help people who don’t have their own compost heap while reducing the amount of garden waste that goes to land-fill each year at the same time. We hope a lot of households will take up the offer and look forward to hearing from them.”
Each year the council collects and composts thousands of tonnes of garden waste (grass cuttings, hedge clippings, flowers, twigs, branches, prunings, leaves, weeds and even shredded paper can all be put in the brown garden waste bin) from homes in North Norfolk, greatly reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill in the process.

CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY Continued from front cover...
Our October meeting took place on the night when North Norfolk was battered by gale force winds and heavy rain so it was encouraging that 25 members turned out to hear Howard Norton from the Delphinium Society talk about this rather underrated perennial. Those who think that delphiniums come only in shades of blue overlook the fact that white, mauve, violet and plum coloured varieties are widely available and they are very hardy. They prefer well drained soil but must not be allowed to dry out so regular watering and mulching is advisable. The plants require support as they can grow to between six and eight feet in height. Flowering ends in late July but if cut back, fed and generally tidied up at this time then a second flowering is possible by late August/early September. Mr Norton brought with him two spikes that he had picked from his garden that morning, highlighting the fact that delphiniums can provide autumn as well as summer colour.
Anyone wishing to see these plants at their best should try to visit Anglesey Abbey near Cambridge. A scheme is underway to develop the herbaceous beds in the Bishop’s Garden in Norwich to include a display of delphiniums.

On 20 October we had a very inspiring Ladies Service conducted by Sharon Willmot, and we took time to remember several members unable to attend due to ill health.

Sheringham Players Perform The Unexpected Guest at Sheringham Little Theatre
For their Autumn production Sheringham Players present Agatha Christie’s ‘The Unexpected Guest’.
Lost in thick fog on a November night, a stranger (played by Tim Travers) arrives
at a remote house in rural South Wales. Approaching the house for help, he discovers Richard Warwick
dead, shot through the head. His much younger wife, Laura (played by Hazel Warrington) is found holding a gun. Did she do it? Or was it another member of this strange household, who all seem to have a motive? This is an unmissable play with a strong supporting cast. Follow the twists and turns of the plot to find out “whodunnit”. Can you guess the answer before the investigating officers? Test your deductive skills on Thursday 14 November to Saturday 16 November at 7.30pm at Sheringham Little Theatre. (Box Office 01263 822347, tickets £8)

Good wishes for the play have been received from Liza Goddard, Frazer Hines, Mark Wynter, Sophie Ward, and last but not least Renee Asherson. Renee Asherson is the only living Renee Asherson member of the original cast when the play was first staged at the Duchess Theatre in London’s West End, in August 1958. Many Agatha Christie devotees will remember Renee Asherson, now in her late 90s. So, it was a great honour for directors Greg Pope and Brenda Williams, and cast and crew to receive her good wishes for the play.

Amazing Art Auction for Africa
A charity art auction earlier this month raised over £4,000 (including gift aid) to help street children in Lusaka, Zambia.
Over 70,000 children live on the streets in Lusaka, mainly orphaned by the Aids pandemic. The auction was part of a series of events to raise funds for building materials for a volunteer’s house for the health professionals who work with these children. A group of local trades-people and volunteers will travel to Zambia in October 2014 to build the house, all funding their own expenses.
The evening, organised by Mundesley wonder-woman, Wendy Fredericks, featured cheese and wine tasting, art sale and live music by Ade Cockburn whilst potential purchasers viewed the lots on offer.
The auction, conducted by Roy Murphy of Keys Auctioneers, featured almost 100 lots of paintings, photographs and sculptures all generously donated by local artists. A fierce, but good humoured bidding war saw almost all the lots sold with highlights being an original installation by Harry Gunn realising £120, his father Jon Gunn’s ‘Curlews’ also realising £120 and a signed print by Ronald Durban realising £195. A further donation of an oil painting ‘Barn Owl Hunting’ by renowned artist Maggi Hambling will be offered at Keys’ East Anglian Fine Art auction on 22 November. Also still available is a wonderful stained glass
depiction of a peacock (on exhibit in Felbrigg Gardens) - telephone Roy Murphy at Keys on 01263 733195 for more details on these two items.
After the auction, organiser Wendy said ‘With over 100 pieces there are too many folks to thank individually but they were all instrumental in the auction’s success. We were also treated to delicious homemade cheese by Greg Kaye at Groveland Roughton, Candi's lovely chutneys of Aylsham and Norfolk Cordials of Matlaske. With wine donated from Coors brewery we had a fantastic demonstration on how to appreciate wine from Kate Sweet. A wonderful evening was had by all and thank you to the team of stars who helped us on the night.’
For more information about the project, including future events, the next being a “Crafty Christmas sale" at the black swan, north Walsham 10am – 2pm thursday 14th november where more art will be sold and stall holders are invited, please visit

helping children to explore a world of stories, creativity and learning. The events are funded by a grant from Tesco’s organised by the Norfolk Community Foundation Fund.
Children will have the opportunity to take part in a range of activities run by professional and experienced workshop leaders. From African drumming to Martial Arts, there's something for everyone!
Maria Pavledis, Community Librarian at Cromer Library, said ‘Ron, in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, said “when in doubt, go to the library” - a thought we want to encourage’, adding ‘the library is a welcoming community space for everyone. For children and families it is a place to explore creativity and learn in fun and interesting ways, to help widen children's experience and knowledge of the world’.
As well as the special one-off events, a ‘Storytime’ activity is held the second Saturday of every month where pre-school children listen to stories and take part in associated creative activities. ‘Storytime has been running for some time’ said Helen S who runs the events, ‘obtaining the grant means we can improve the range of activities we run so we can bring in more families’.
money is only part of the organising for these events - we would really like more people to come forward to both help at the events and with the organising behind the scenes’.
The Library is a free service offering so much more than books. A space for community groups to meet, free internet and wi-fi, talking books and reading groups, family activities and much, much more!
Details of the events are as follows:

We started our October meeting by welcoming seven visitors. We were then entertained by Neil Storey who gave us a talk on the History of Medicine. He brought along with him a collection of implements that were used in medicine and what a fascinating collection they were, some very macabre. He began his talk by telling us how in the 17th century illnesses were diagnosed with the use of charts and birthdates. We learnt that the red and white barber’s pole indicated blood and bandages, liquorice root and cuttlefish were used for cleaning teeth and crushed up bones from criminals who had been hanged were used for treating sore throats. Many of the medicines that were used in the 18th century contained drugs such as heroin and cocaine so if it didn’t cure it quite often killed. Neil’s talk ended all too quickly but we then did enjoy a cup of tea.
Final arrangements were made for a visit to Ely Christmas Gift and Food Fare in November. Members were reminded that next month is the Annual Meeting and we will be electing the Committee voting for a new President. Our own Shoestring Players will also be performing a short seasonal satire. New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2.30pm (in the New Year our start time will change to 2pm) in the Community Hall in Garden Street.
Overstrand Evening WI’s 30th Birthday
Members of Overstrand Evening WI, along with guests and founder members, celebrated the groups 30th birthday on Wednesday 16 October. There is nothing quite like a birthday and to complete the celebration, members Joyce Ess and Patsy Norris made a stunning birthday cake. President Caz Lewis together with founder member and former President Mary Haynes did the honours by cutting the cake, this was then enjoyed by all. Scrapbooks were on display during the evening, containing photographs and reports covering events and meetings over the years. These proved popular, in particular to founder members who were able to take a trip down ‘memory lane’.
Varicose Veins
Endovenous laser therapy (EVLT) is a quick, minimally invasive alternative to traditional vein stripping, and can be performed under local anaesthesia. This removes the need for invasive surgery under general anaesthetic.
Approximately half of the population has some form of venous disease, and varicose veins affect about one out of two people age 50 and older, and 15-25% of all adults.
Bulging varicose veins in the lower leg are usually caused by a faulty valve located higher in the leg that can’t be seen at the surface.
EVLT treats the source of the problem, which then causes the varicose vein in the lower leg to shrink and disappear. It involves the insertion of an ultrasound-guided laser fibre directly into the incompetent great or short saphenous vein. Laser energy heats the vein from within, causing it to shrink, collapse and seal shut.
Coltishall Clinic also offers sclerotherapy and lasers to treat leftover spider veins. For more information or to book an appointment, Call 0800 0430737 or log on to the website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk.
The previous week members not only hosted the Brass Tray Quiz evening, but also won the Quiz for the second year running. The quiz is open to WI’s in the locality and thanks to team members Madeline Hudson, Mary Haynes and Val Brimfield the Brass Tray remains in Overstrand for another year. Well done ladies.

Information Day for those living with and beyond cancer the big C Centre, norwich, opens its doors to offer help and support to anyone living with and beyond cancer
a special cancer information Day is being held at norwich’s big C Centre on saturday 9 november 10.30am – 3.30pm.
Charities from the region, Big C and hospital professionals are coming together under one roof to inform cancer patients and their families and friends of all the help available to them in our region. This will include advice on work and cancer, talking to children, money matters, healthy eating, travel insurance, body image, psychosexual issues, keeping active and more. There will also be samples of sweet and savoury tasters for people to try.
A similar event was held in May this year, and saw people affected by cancer walking away armed with information and advice that could help them through their own particular cancer journey. One visitor, who had recently become a carer for their loved one, said, ‘As a carer, I now have a better understanding of how cancer affects you. I found it useful and am very grateful for the information’.
As part of the market-place style plan for the day there will be stands with information on local and national cancer support groups, stands from British Red Cross, Age UK and Crossroads, plus many specialists on hand for help and advice. Taster sessions of hand massage will be available on the day.
The hospital and Big C will also have their specialists available, such as a Welfare Advisor, nutritional experts and Health Care Professionals, as well as the friendly staff of the Centre itself. Carers of cancer patients are an important group and the day will include information on support for carers, including our Carer’s Club.
there will be talks by professionals every half-hour: 10.00 11.00 11.30 12.00 12.30 13.00 13.30 14.00 14.30

Jill Chapman, the Big C Centre Manager says ‘When someone is diagnosed with cancer the
whole family is affected. There is a lot of information, advice and support in our region but we need to make sure people have the opportunity to find out about it. The hospitals all do a fantastic job in supporting patients and as we know everyone’s situation is different, which is why we’re working with other charities and specialists to offer this day. There will be something for everyone from diagnosis onwards, something to help people take back some control of their lives and to move on.’
Refreshments are on offer all day and the event is entirely free. This event will be held every six months. (Next year’s dates are May 10th 2014 and November 8th 2014).
Visit the Big C Centre on Saturday 9 DOOR GLASS DELIVERED TO YOUR November between 10:30am and 3:30pm. There is no need to book. The car park costs £2 all day. Festival launches Community Grant scheme the Cromer and sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival has announced the opening of their Community Grant scheme for the second year running.
After the success of this year’s Charity Lifebuoy Auction the Festival committee has announced a total of £5,000 will be donated to charity. To date, the Festival has donated over £24,000 to local projects since the first Charity Auction of Crab and Lobster Sculptures in 2010.
Charities and organisations in Cromer and Sheringham can now apply to the scheme which aims to benefit local good causes. On Sunday 25 August the fourth Crab & Lobster Festival came to a close with the annual Charity Auction which saw over 70 decorated Lifebuoys go under the hammer raising £5,000. Earlier in the year the Lifebuoys formed the Festival’s Art Trail and were displayed in businesses across Cromer and Sheringham. Over 200 individuals had a hand in decorating the Lifebuoys which were sponsored by local businesses.
The Community Grant Scheme is open to organisations and charities in Cromer and Sheringham to apply to for grant funding for specific projects or for work that they would like to embark on.
In 2012 the Festival donated a total of £7,500 to charity split between the Fishermen’s
Mission and the inaugural Community Grant Scheme. The Fishermen’s Mission was chosen as the Festival’s main charity for the vital support the Mission gives to fishermen and their families and received £2,500.

The remaining £5,000 was distributed between 14 local organisations and groups who work tirelessly for the benefit of the local community. The organisations who received grants from the scheme in 2012 were:
Open Door Community Arts, Sheringham U18s Football Team, Suffield Park Infant & Nursery School, Cromer Lawn Tennis & Squash Association, The Cromer Bells Project, RNLI Cromer, After Breast Cancer
Sheringham, Cromer & North Norfolk Festival of Music, Dance & Speech, Cromer Exhibition Foundation, Cromer Christmas Lights, Sidestrand Hall School, Cromer & District Garden Society and Age UK North Norfolk.
Festival Chairman Tony Shipp said “the Festival thought it vital to support charities local to Cromer and Sheringham which provide exceptional support to the local community.”
Kate Royall Festival Secretary said “We are welcoming applications from organisations or charities based in and around Cromer and Sheringham. Projects or activities can include local community events, groups, sporting activities, and purchase of specialist equipment. This list is not exclusive however and we urge anyone to get in touch to find out more.”
To apply for a grant organisations should fill in the application form which is available to download from the Festival’s website or by emailing enquiries@crabandlobsterfestival.co.uk or calling the Festival secretary on 07775 337201. Applications should be received by Friday 29 November 2013.
in 2014 the Festival will run 16-18 May. Sponsorship opportunities are now available. Please contact the Festival on 07775 337201 or email enquiries@crabandlobsterfestival.co.uk.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Although the final cat in the colony mentioned previously has still to be caught and neutered, we believe we will finally be successful as the cat is now going into the trap for food. It is just a case of catching the cat on a day when operating time is available. In the meantime, another cat not seen before has been caught and neutered.
Buckaroo, the little kitten which came in recently did give us cause for concern to start with as he had such a large tummy, which we now think was due to malnutrition. With regular meals he has lost his tummy and we are delighted to see him joining in the chasing and playing games with the other kittens.
Depending on the reasons why a cat has come into care, we will blood test for FIV and FELV. We do however always test when a cat is handed in as a stray. Fortunately over the years we have had very few cats where the initial blood test has come back as positive. In these cases a further sample is sent to an external laboratory for confirmation and we have thankfully had few instances where the second test has indicated the cat has got FIV or FELV.
When Bombardier arrived in care there was nothing to indicate that he would test positive for FIV but, unfortunately, he has and further tests have confirmed the initial result. This does not mean that Bombardier cannot find a loving home, merely that he will need to be an indoor cat either on his own or with other FIV positive cats. Bombardier is only five years old, is a handsome ginger and white lad, very friendly and laid back who I am sure will soon find someone to love him.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
If, however, you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Carnival & religious celebrations, Bonfire Night and New Year - we enjoy fireworks year round, but they can be a source of fear for many animals. If not addressed, noise phobias tend to get worse over time so it’s always best to be prepared.
Here’s the Animal Magic Dog Club top tips for dealing with Firework Fear in your dog:
will only make things worse.
• Some dogs may want to hide when frightened, so providing a ‘doggy den’ may help them to cope. If you know your dog is going to be frightened on the night then set
• A meal containing carbohydrates such as well cooked rice, pasta or mashed potato may make your dog feel more sleepy and calm.
• Ignore the firework noises yourself. If your dog shows any signs of fear or anxiety do not react – it’s important never to punish or fuss over your dog when it is scared as this
• Dogs that are particularly fearful may benefit from a noise desensitisation programme, this needs to be undertaken many months in advance following guidance from your Vet.
Don’t forget other small animals: Cats should be kept indoors with somewhere warm, cosy and dark to hide. If your pets live outside, partly cover cages, pens and aviaries with blankets so that one area is well covered from the sights and sounds of the fireworks.
• Give your dog a long walk during the late afternoon making sure that they go to the toilet and keep them indoors after dark.
• Close curtains to hide the flashes of light and turn up the TV or radio to mask the sound.
• Seek advice from your vet as there are a number of products which may help your pet to cope.
this up in advance so they are comfortable and happy inside.
• Don’t leave your dog alone in the house - he may panic and injure himself.

This has been on the menu now for a while and is a firm favourite as it’s perfect for this nice windy Autumnal weather we’re enjoying! The boss was out on the ride-on mower on Saturday morning mulching up the leaves on the lawn, but of course by the time he’s finished the grass was thick with them again… I think he just enjoys riding around with Duran Duran in his headphones to be honest.
We’ve been extremely busy here at the Grove, with a two-week waiting list for most weekend evenings and full houses for Sunday lunch too. We’re opening for the first time in over sixty years for Christmas Lunch this year, which promises to be a wonderful occasion, so do pop in for a menu or call us on 01263512412 to book your table.
Please enjoy my bread and butter pudding – it takes a bit of work but is most definitely worth it in the end.
See you soon, Charlie
1 small tin all butter brioche loaf 10 slices thick cut white bread ½ cup dark chocolate ½ cup white chocolate ½ cup muscavado sugar 1 vanilla pod 1 pint thick double cream 4 large free-range eggs 125g unsalted butter (melted) A lot of love
For the ice cream: 2 full cups of full fat milk, 2/3 cup double cream 7 free range egg yolks ½ cup unrefined caster sugar 2 good pinches ground ginger Two good tablespoons of stem ginger, drained and diced.
■
Brioche Bread and Butter Pudding (Serves 4)
Using either enamel or glass Pyrex dish, brush with melted butter ■ Slice the brioche loaf and cut into triangles ■ Whisk eggs with cream and the sugar with the rest of the melted butter ■ Slice your vanilla pod down the centre and scrap the seed with the back of the knife ■ Add to the cream and butter mix, whisk lightly. ■ Melt both chocolates in a glass Pyrex bowl over a simmering pan on a stove until chocolate is tepid. ■ Place the brioche and white bread alternatively in four layers in your Pyrex dish, with the melted chocolate drizzled off the whisk between each layer. ■ Once all the bread and brioche are in the dish, add cream mix over the top. With latex gloves, pushing down so all your bread absorbs the mixture. ■ Drizzle remaining chocolate over the top ■ Bake in the oven on gas mark 4 / 5 (180) for fifteen to 30 mins depending on oven until golden brown. This is a basic recipe for crème anglais, with the stem ginger of course. ■ Run a medium- sized saucepan under cold water ■ Pour in the cream and milk and bring to the boil ■ Whisk eggs, sugar and ground ginger while waiting for milk to heat ■ Once boiled pour over the egg mix ■ Whisk and return the eggy mix to the saucepan ■ Return the saucepan to medium heat and gently cook through the Anglais, stirring continuously – DO NOT RE-BOIL!!! When mix coats the back of the spoon you know it’s done. ■ Put the saucepan into a bowl of ice water; once cool place in food mixer with butterfly whisk ■ Whisk in the diced stem ginger and place in a two litre ice-cream container, pop into the freezer ready to enjoy.

A Small Company Amongst Giants Written by Helen Batten – Solicitor with Hayes + Storr
The Federation of Small Businesses reports that there are over 4.5 million small to medium sized businesses operating in the UK today. A key concern for small businesses is bad debt and cash flow issues. With the UK tightening its belt, a small business must ensure that it has efficient procedures in place to recover debts, particularly those debts of significant value.
compelled to borrow funds at unfavourable interest rates to tide them over between payment of their invoices due to attempts by larger companies to stretch payment terms upwards of 30 days.
It was for this very reason that in 1997, the government introduced The Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998, later supplemented by The Late Payment of Commercial Debts Regulations 2002. The purpose of the Late Payment legislation is to encourage a culture of prompt payment by allowing small businesses to charge each other, as well as large and public sector business, a statutory rate of interest for late payment beyond agreed payment terms. The rate of interest can be calculated by adding 8% to the “reference rate” under the legislation, which is the Bank of England base rate set for the six month period in which the debt falls due. Even with the current Bank of England lingering at a measly 0.5%, an interest rate of 8.5% charged on outstanding invoices can do much to persuade prompt payment.
The unfortunate truth is that there is a worrying trend of large or public listed companies using their size and bargaining power to delay payment to small businesses. A large company which contracts with many small suppliers often has the ability to take its business elsewhere which means it can move from supplier to supplier leaving unpaid invoices in its wake.
Knowing how to put debt recovery procedures in place is something with which our experienced team at Hayes + Storr’s Litigation Department can assist. Our expertise range from chasing small uncontested sums to dealing with more complex large disputed debt claims.
However, Experian reports that the Late Payment legislation has little effect in situations where larger businesses have such extensive bargaining power that businesses contracting with them feel compelled to accept extended payment terms as they believe themselves to be in
If sums remain outstanding, the knock on effect to small businesses is a restriction on their growth and expansion. Clearly, in the current climate, we wish small businesses to grow and not be forced to postpone hiring new staff or investing in expansion due to being left waiting for payment. Many businesses are

no position to argue otherwise. In these circumstances, large companie sare successfully avoiding the penalties of late payment by technically payment within agreed payment terms, albeit extended ones.
So what is the solution? Use your extra hour to give blood in November With the clocks going back at the end of October, people are being urged to use their extra hour to give blood in November.
NHS Blood and Transplant is highlighting the end of British Summer Time on October 27 to remind people that they will have more time to give blood. With each donation potentially saving up to three lives, what better way to spend it?
Blood is always required with hospitals in England and North Wales needing around 7,000 units of blood every day to treat patients. Donated blood is not only used in accident and emergency situations but also for patients undergoing surgery and receiving treatment for cancer and other blood diseases.
Derek Carr, Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHSBT, said “It would be great to see people using their extra hour to make a real difference to the lives of others. Blood saves and improves lives every day. We especially need O negative (O-) and B negative (B-) donors to come forward. We welcome new and existing donors and you can book an appointment or walk in to one of our sessions. You may have to wait when sessions are busy but we will do our best to ensure that everyone who wants to donate is seen as quickly as possible.”
Donors with blood group O- negative are commonly known as the ‘universal donor’ as their blood can be given to patients with a different blood group. Donors with the blood group B- are more often found in Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities. Only 2% of the population has this blood group
Anyone aged between 17 - 65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.
to book an appointment call the Donor Line on 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk

Cromer Music Evenings - Review of Concert held on Sunday 13 October at Templewood. Manon Fischer-Dieskau - Piano For the first concert of the 2013-14 series, Cromer Music Evenings presented Manon Fischer-Dieskau, a pianist who, as a soloist and accompanist, has performed at many Royal Academy of Music projects, such as the Beethoven Festival, the Austrian Cultural Institute and recitals at Wigmore Hall to name but a few.
Today at Templewood she performed a programme to honour her grandfather, the late Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. J S Bach’s Preludes and Fugues in D major from Book 1 of the ‘48’ were played with complete ease and control. In each fugue the subjects, counter subjects and answers were articulated in such a way to enhance the understandings of Bach’s polyphonic writings.

Mozart’s Sonata No 18 in D major K576 in three movements was sheer delight in performance with impeccable embellishments and tone gradations, with the Adagio being in pure Mozartian style. Beethoven’s Sonata No 18 in E flat major op 31 No 3 required a different approach in
performance with its four movements, each demanding diversity in technique, especially in the presto con fuoco!
Maurice Ravel’s Sonatine - impressionistic in style - was so beautifully played, mastering with ease the complexities of this work. Scherzo No 4 in E major op 54 by Chopin, being in complete contrast, delighted the large audience who found it difficult to stop applauding! Truly a masterful performance.
To complete this wonderful recital, FischerDieskau played four preludes by Rachmaninoff in G major op 32 No 5, B minor op 32 No 10, G sharp minor op 32 No 12 and in B flat major op 23 No 2.
A wonderful finale to this truly magnificent performance by this young pianist, but who is so very mature in interpretation. The programme stated that she is ‘looking forward to an active and fulfilling performing career’. I’m sure that everyone in the audience would agree that this will be so. THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER POPPIES
‘In Flanders fields the poppies grow Between the crosses, row on row That mark our place: and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below
We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.’
Colonel John McRae, MD, Canadian Army, 1915.
There are over seventy species of poppies: annuals, biennials, and perennials occurring in a wide range of habitats from lowlands to high mountains. Most are from Central and Southern Europe and temperate Asia, a few from South Africa, Australia and America.
Many of these species make excellent garden plants, the larger species are spectacular in

mixed or herbaceous border whilst several of the smaller poppies are suitable for a rock garden or an annual border. Most of the poppies are fully hardy to frost hardy and grow well in deep, fertile soil in full sun except for the alpine varieties which need good drainage. Sow seed in spring: for annuals and biennials sow directly into the soil, for perennials, sow seed in containers in a cold frame. Divide perennials in spring or take root cuttings in late autumn or early winter.
However at this time of the year poppies mean only one thing, the red poppy that we wear on Remembrance Sunday. The poem quoted above by John McRae is believed to have been written because he was so moved by the death of a friend and the profusion of poppies he could see in a nearby cemetery. The custom of wearing a red poppy started in Georgia in the United States, where Moina Michael, a worker with the YMCA, was so moved by the Flanders field poem that she vowed to wear a poppy evermore. In 1921 the British Legion was formed and was approached by a YMCA friend of Moina Michael’s with samples of artificial poppies she had made. The idea of a ‘Poppy Day’, marking the anniversary of the Armistice, took off immediately. That year, on 11 November, the British Legion raised more than £100,000 from the sale of poppies.
The poppy is of course of particular significance in Norfolk in the brief fashionability of the cliff-top landscapes of Cromer and Overstrand, which were immortalised as ‘Poppy-land’ by the Daily Telegraph’s drama critic Clement Scott. Scott had taken to visiting these new seaside resorts in the 1880s and had fallen in love not only with the local miller’s daughter, but with the sight of waves of scarlet blossoms in fields and lonely churchyards, sweeping down to the very edge of the cliffs, and set against the sparkle of the North Sea in high summer. He began to write ecstatic columns about poppy-land in 1883, and started the fad that brought thousands of visitors to the little villages on what the Great Eastern Railway promptly named the Poppy Line.
We have therefore a plant that provokes powerful images from the East Anglia Arcadia of Clement Scott ‘Neath the blue of the sky, in the green of the corn/It is there that the regal red poppies are born’ to the sea of mud and suffering around the First World War battlefields thirty years later which we shall remember on Sunday, 10th November and again on Monday, 11th November, Armistice Day, when the British Legion is planting a ‘Flanders Field’ of poppies beside the ramparts of the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres.

Slow Food Festival
From breakfast to Dinner, from workshops to demonstrations to musical entertainment and markets, this year's aylsham Food Festival, organised by slow Food aylsham, had everything for those who enjoy their food with a light-hearted touch!
Taking full advantage of the impressive Mobile Cooking Academy, on loan from Festival sponsors AEG and temporarily sited at Blickling Hall, the weekend got off to a flying start with a series of workshops for groups of young children from local primary schools.
On hand to help were Justin Gardner, catering manager at the Hall, plus Liz Scott in the costume of Cath, her scullery maid alter ego. Liz returned the following day, together with two other Blickling Hall volunteers, Bunty Stotts - aka Flo the Cook and Malcolm Bird, 'The Butler' who staged a workshop for students from Aylsham High School. The three were followed by local chefs Steve Thorpe, Festival Patron and Head of School at City College Norwich; freelance Derrol Waller; Mark Sayers from the Saracen's Head and Richard Baker from Aylsham's Market Place Bistro. Together they produced a series of demonstration sessions for a 'drop-in' audience, cooking up some fabulous dishes which the audience were invited to taste.
The demonstrations continued the following day with a return of Steve Thorpe and Derrol Waller, joined by Steve Norgate from The Beechwood in North Walsham and, fresh from directing the previous night's Gala Dinner, Jason Baxter, head of Hospitality & Catering at the High School. Blickling Hall's Catering Manager, Justin Gardner was also on hand, and together with Derrol Waller, took part in a lively Ready, Steady, Cook competition.
The Festival Gala Dinner occupied its traditional Friday evening slot when over 100 students at Aylsham High School cooked and served a five-course meal for more than 100 guests. Guest speaker Steve Thorpe, Festival patron and Head of the Hotel School at City College Norwich, praised the youngsters for producing a superb meal of the highest standard.
Aylsham Food Festival includes two food markets, the first on Friday morning, Aylsham Country Market, is a cooperative of local home-based producers who offer a range of cakes, biscuits, savouries, vegetables and eggs in addition to a selection of craft goods. Aylsham's FARMAaccredited Farmers Market, held every first and third Saturday of the month, enjoyed a very busy day, extending its hours to take in performances by junk percussion duo, Bang On! The duo, who use 'instruments' ranging from wheelie bins to plastic pop bottles, invited everyone to join in their irresistibly rhythmic workshops which were followed by a grand finale performance in Aylsham Market Place, featuring some 80 members of the public.
Family Cooking Workshops were another attraction on Festival Saturday, bringing over 50 children into Aylsham Town Hall, where they were able to make Spring Rolls and exotic 'Tutti Fruiti Crumble' to take home with them.
The Big Slow Breakfast has always rounded off Aylsham Food Festival and 2013 was no exception. Serving also as the final event in the five-week Norfolk Food & Drink Festival, the Breakfast saw 120 people

Summing up the 2013 Food Festival, Slow Food Aylsham's Roger Willis said, "Pulling together all the different Photo: 'Andy Davison elements of this year's Festival has Photography' been a challenging experience, particularly as, for the first time, we were operating from two venues, Aylsham and Blickling. But thanks to the exceptional efforts of all Slow Food Aylsham members, plus back-up from principal sponsors, AEG and J B Postle, and our other supporters, I think we have pulled off the best Festival to date. The Cooking Academy vehicle has been a major success, while I think everyone agreed that the Dinner at the High School scaled new heights of excellence. Add in the very popular Bang On! who set the Market Place alight on Saturday, the Kids Cooking Workshops, two very successful markets and the sold-out Breakfast, and I think we can say that we are very satisfied with the result of our efforts.
"Aylsham Food Festival is organised entirely by volunteers from a not-for-profit organisation which I think makes the success all the more remarkable. All we have to do now is decide how we can at least equal that success in 2014!"

COOKERS BY CLUTTERBUGS!
Andrew Parish, Sheringham’s “cooker man”, has enjoyed another busy year as Clutterbugs, the oven cleaning business which he set up in 2005, has been in great demand with customers throughout North Norfolk!
The Cookers by Clutterbugs service is available for for any type of cooker and includes cooker hood cleaning and oven light replacement where required. Andrew uses high quality cleaning materials, plus a great deal of good old-fashioned elbow grease, in order to remove grease and grime and leave customers’ cookers sparkling clean!
Cleaning ovens is not Andrew’s only talent; he also runs The Sun Deck, a friendly and comfortable bed & breakfast establishment in Holway Road, Sheringham, which has been awarded four stars by Visit Britain. The Sun Deck also has a Visit Britain Breakfast Award for providing a top class breakfast for guests, and was runner-up in Sheringham in Bloom’s “Hotels and Guest Houses” category again this year for it’s colourful and welcoming floral display. In addition, Andrew and his wife Sheila have recently opened “Lily Likes…”, a little shop in the centre of Sheringham (opposite The Lobster Public House) which will offer old and new vintage-style gifts, cards, accessories, costume jewellery, curios and trinkets in the run-up to Christmas.
to book Clutterbugs oven cleaning service, phone andrew on 01263 823489 or 078 7622 1978
