Cromer Lifeboat to appear in national camera magazine
Cromer Lifeboat station had a visit on Sunday 27 October by Michael Topham who was welcomed to the station by Tony Webster (chairman of Cromer RNLI) and Richard Leeds (Lifeboat Operations manager).
Michael is the Reviews Editor for What Digital Camera, a national monthly magazine that focuses on reviewing all the new cameras that come onto the market. He is currently in the process of reviewing a new camera that's the world's first fully waterproof interchangeable lens camera - the Nikon 1 AW1. His visit to Cromer RNLI was to take a series of professional photographs on one of the Lifeboats training missions.
Michael has previously worked with RNLI stations all across the UK including Chiswick, Torbay and Falmouth and said “it would be great to have the opportunity to focus on Cromer this time”.

Jen steps up to the job of Labour's vice-chair
Cromer publisher and former by-election candidate Jen Emery was selected as Labour's new vice-chair for internal affairs at North Norfolk Labour Party's Annual General Meeting in October.
Mrs Emery, who replaces Scott Eastwood who relocated from Cromer to Yorkshire last summer, will oversee the Labour Party's recruitment of young and women voters in North Norfolk. In the role she will also be involved in fundraising and organising social events for party members.
Much of the executive team at the party will remain the same with prospective parliamentary candidate Denise Burke remaining chair, Stephen Burke as the vice-chair for campaigns, Jono Read as party press officer, and Mike Gates as secretary.
Cromer Lifeboat to appear in national camera magazine Continued from front cover
The relief boat Edward and Barbara Prigmore was launched at approximately 10am with Michael and the crew. Luckily the day was relatively sunny and the sea calm, so it provided a test of the new camera whilst the boat was at sea. Michael was also able to get some shots of the crew at work as well as pictures of the boat on a training exercise. The boat returned to the boathouse just before midday.
Some of the images Michael shot will be on the Cromer RNLI website later this year.
Jen Emery - Labour's new vice-chair for internal affairs
In the meeting the party also paid their respects to former district councillor Don Batts who had recently passed away. Denise Burke led a minute's silence, while Mike Cullingham (a former parliamentary candidate and district councillor) led the tributes.
Mike said Don was North Norfolk District Council's first chairman on the newly-formed economic development committee, and was described as a "wonderful guy in all senses" as well as a "treasured voice of sanity" during coalition talks on the District Council in the 1990s.
To find out how to join the North Norfolk Labour Party visit www.norfolklabour.co.uk, call Denise Burke on 01692 650816, or write to Thrums, The Hill, Happisburgh, Norfolk, NR12 0PW.

North Norfolk building excellence in the spotlight at national awards
Three North Norfolk developments have won their way through to the finals of the national Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence Awards for 2013.
Projects from Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire competed to be named the best in East Anglia, in 12 categories covering different types of building design, construction and use. Three North Norfolk developments were named regional winners, more than any other local authority at the East Anglia awards, with Cromer and District Hospital winning two categories, and they will now feature in the national finals to be held at The Brewery, London, on 12 November. The awards recognise projects that have been built to the very highest standards, and demonstrate innovation and sustainability in design.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon
It’s just a few weeks until Christmas and we are gearing up for a very busy few weeks with our party dates throughout December a fast booking Christmas Day Luncheon and New Years Eve Dinner bookings already being taken.
But before then we are please to announce that our 2 for 1 Lunchtime offer is back each weekday from 12 noon until 3pm on many of our main courses. We are also running our speciality food nights every Wednesday until 20th November with alternating Steak and Pie Nights.
Our Sunday Family Roasts are also proving very popular and with a choice of roast meats and a great selection of vegetables it is no wonder that we are seeing a lot of repeat bookings. We also invite visitors to the White Horse for breakfast served each day from 8am, its a great way to start your day particularly at weekends when you can perhaps arrange to meet with friends or sit and enjoy that extra cup of coffee while reading the weekend papers, before setting off for a brisk walk. Don’t forget to book your table if you are planning to visit us over the Christmas and New Year period.
nathan boon’s recipe for tomato onion and Potato Gratin - serves four
Ingredients 450g Onions 4 Tablespoon Olive Oil 700g Potatoes peeled and thinly sliced 2 Sprigs of Fresh Thyme Leaves picked 6 Juniper Berries crushed Butter for greasing dish 1 Bay Leaf 450g Plum Tomatoes thinly sliced
Method Slice the onions thinly and pan fry gently with two tablespoons of olive oil until caramelized, finish with salt and pepper. Put the potatoes, thyme, juniper berries and remaining oil in a bowl, season and mix well. Take an oval gratin dish and butter it well, then layer the potatoes, onions and tomatoes in that order, until all the ingredients have been used up, making
sure you finish with a layer of potatoes, tuck in a bay leaf, sprinkle on two tablespoons of water. Bake in the oven at 170 C. for about an hour until crunchy and golden on top and soft on the inside.

Christmas is coming …
STEAM STRAIGHT TO SANTA Once again, Santa Claus is setting up his Enchanted Grotto at Weybourne Station. Which, of course, means that the best way to meet him is to take a Poppy Line Santa Special steam train from Sheringham direct to the Grotto.
Santa Specials will be running on Sunday 1 December, the weekends of 7/8 and 14/15 December, and every day from Saturday 21 December up to and including Christmas Eve.
Advance booking is essential (visit www.nnrailway.co.uk, call 01263 820800 or pop into the office at Sheringham station), so that Santa can arrange an appropriate present for each child aged between one and 14.
A sure sign that the festive season is fast approaching is the sight of the Cromer Christmas Lights team busy putting up the lights and decorations in the town as our photo shows …
On the Santa Specials, there’s a free glass of sherry and a mince pie for the grown-ups, and a soft drink and choccy treat for the children. Each booking has reserved numbered seating in decorated carriages.
Prices for adults and children range from £13.50 to £17 a head, depending on the date and time of travel. Babies up to one year old are £6. And Santa Snack Platters, a mini-feast of sandwiches, pies, cakes and festive fare for four people, can be reserved at just £24 a platter.
This year, the Poppy Line is also running two Christmas ‘North Norfolkman’ lunch trains, on Sundays 1 and 8 December. Leaving Sheringham at 12.40pm, these trains offer a superb three course lunch. Price per head (including travel but not drinks) is £44.50. The trains do not include a visit to Santa, and must be booked separately in advance. Already the Santa Specials are filling up fast, so you’re advised to book right away to get the date and time you prefer.

Jamboree on the Air at Roughton Scouts
Over the weekend of 19 and 20 October members of the Bittern DX Group were with the Scouts of Roughton 1st Rural HQ to take part in the 56th Jamboree on the Air. This is an annual event in which half a million Scouts and Guides all over the world make contact with each other by means of amateur radio.
and the logging of callsigns plus understanding basic propagation information. It was an interesting and successful weekend for BDXG members
The use of amateur radio means that many Scouts get the opportunity to discover the skills of radio operating techniques and electronics. JOTA is also the only event that offers each individual Scout the opportunity to speak to other Scouts across the world.
In total there was 36 Scouts of various types from Buxton, Gorleston and of course Roughton groups for a weekend of activities at their Windmill headquarters. The boys and girls had plenty to keep them busy with archery, rifle shooting and abseiling etc available along with the amateur radio aspect provided by BDXG members. Antennas were erected from the top of the old Windmill’s tower and using the SES callsign of GB5FRR contacts were made as far afield as Australia! The object of the weekend however was not just the radio - it was to enable those Scouts interested to gain both their Communications and Electronics badges. BDXG members divided themselves into two groups to concentrate on each aspect and by end of the weekend there were four successful candidates achieving each badge requirements.
Group chairman Stephen Cordner M0HET, ably assisted by Alec Adams G3YOA and Jim Whiteside M0HPJ mainly concentrated on the Electronics badge aspect. In this they taught the candidates soldering techniques and how to recognise various components, as well as the building of available kits plus learning how to measure voltage within the circuit. The other group comprising principally of Steve Balding G7VRK and Paul Bean M6NEC concentrated themselves on providing the aspects for the Communication badge. This requires learning how to use the radio and make contact via the airwaves, as well as listening to
K C evin
Paul Bean M6NEC assists Scouts with their Communications badge operating from GB5FRR and all candidates were presented with their badges after lunch on the Sunday before they all left camp. We hope very much to be involved with the Scouts more in 2014 as the members enjoy it as much as the youngsters taking part in the activities at the weekend. Even our member Jim took the chance to abseil down the tower - we can’t have the Scouts having all the fun!!
Involvement with the Scouts and teaching is one of the many aspects of amateur radio undertaken by the Bittern DX Group, if you would like to know more about the hobby, getting started etc. or just about the group itself. Please contact them via the group’s website www.bittern-dxers.org.uk or the Secretary Linda Leavold G0AJJ on 01692 218592 in the evenings or weekends for further information and future events.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Buckaroo, the little kitten featured last time, has now been re-homed. Several other cats and kittens have also been chosen and we were particularly delighted that Matilda and Hester, two lovely black and white girls, were among them. As Matilda does not like other cats and Hester is quite shy, they had been overlooked, but both have settled in their new homes and are enjoying home comforts once again.
At this time of the year Stephanie gets lots of calls from people who have been feeding a stray cat, sometimes for several months. As winter approaches, they are concerned because the cat is outside and ring to ask if we can take it into care. Although we do try to give priority to strays we, more often than not, do not have space available. Our pens are only empty for a very short time between cats, just long enough for our fosterers to give them a complete clean and change all bedding etc. We will put the cats on the waiting list and they are taken in when a pen becomes available. Recently, a cat which was on the list, but not at the
WE ARE MOVING...
top of it, was taken to the vets to be neutered and left there for us to collect. Horatio, the cat in question, now in residence in Hester’s pen, is not very old and probably strayed from his home searching for females because he had not been neutered. He will be held for two weeks, just in case there is an owner out there waiting to claim him, before being put up for adoption. As a consequence, however, the cat that was about to be offered a space, and had been on the list for some time, is still out there waiting for another pen to become available.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
After many years at the Holt Road site, Miramar Vets is moving. From 4th December 2013 we will be at 15 Weybourne Road, Sheringham, NR26 8HF. (opposite Sheringham Golf Club) THE PHONE NUMBER WILL REMAIN THE SAME – 01263 822293
The surgery will hold 3 Vets consulting rooms, 2 Nurse consulting rooms, separate cat and dog waiting areas and we will be incorporating our pet shop ‘Miramar Pets’ into part of the new surgery.
Also included will be a state of the art operating theatre with a modern prep room including 2 dental tables. Separate cat and dog wards will ensure a restful stay for all in patients and a self-contained isolation unit will keep any contagious diseases away from the main wards. We will have much more space at the new site for offices and a staff room as well as ample parking for our clients. The Weybourne Road site at the start of our project
Dates for your diary
During our move there will be some disruption to our usual consulting hours at Sheringham, we aim to keep this to a minimum but please be aware…… Friday 29th November – All Consultations will be at Cromer Saturday 30th November – Morning Consultations will be at Cromer (For the rest of the weekend emergencies/out of hours consultations will be seen where necessary – contact the duty vet on the mobile number 07721 427782) Monday 2nd December – All consultations will be at Cromer Tuesday 3rd December – All consultations will be at Cromer There will be no routine operations during this time – emergency procedures will be seen where advised by the veterinary surgeon in charge. Wednesday 4th December – Business as usual at the new site We appreciate your patience while we move and look forward to welcoming you to our new surgery on 4th December.

Council to provide free parking on the two Saturdays before Christmas
Parking in North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) car parks will be free on the two Saturdays before Christmas (14 and 21 December, 2pm – 11pm).
The Council has decided to waive parking fees for the afternoons and evenings on 14 and 21 December to help persuade local people to buy their Christmas gifts and supplies locally, to support North Norfolk’s traders at this crucial time of year, and as a gesture of goodwill for the festive season.
On Saturdays 14 and 21 December, from 2pm shoppers will be able to stay all afternoon and evening without a ticket in any District Council–run car park, saving them up to £1- 20 an hour.
Councillor Rhodri Oliver, NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Assets, said “One of North Norfolk District Council’s key aims is to support local businesses and with Christmas being critical for traders we want to encourage people to use the wealth of shops on their doorsteps.
I hope that investing in some free car parking in the run up to Christmas will encourage people to shop and to keep their shopping local.”

The Birth of Coastal Singers
Coastal Singers was born out of the Cley Amateur Dramatic Society, otherwise known as CADS. CADS started up in 1983 and with a double bill Trial by Jury and Wine Women and Song. Since then, it has put on shows in Cley village hall every year to appreciative audiences. In recent years CADS has concentrated on presenting a yearly pantomime in February. In the last few years shows, scripted by Sheila Rudgely, have had engagingly unusual titles like Mother Hubbard and the King’s Pantaloons (2013) and the 2014 show, now in preparation, will be Aladdin and the Gels of St. Trinians.
With titles like that, the shows have had a wacky story line that gives plenty of opportunity for the diverse cast to show their mettle. CADS inclusive policy has always been to let anyone who wants to ‘have a go’, do just that. As a consequence, CADS has attracted a wide range of ages to its cast from pre-teens up to people who would rather not disclose the extent of their seniority!
Since Elisabeth Rooke took over as CADS musical director in 2009, the shows have had a very strong musical element to them with nearly a dozen songs in each pantomime. The repertoire has been so varied and was delivered
with such enthusiasm and gusto that Elisabeth was inspired to suggest that CADS should continue with its singing in the ‘closed season’ after the pantomime was over. Thus was born CADSingers with a core of CADS members at its centre.
CADSingers, in conjunction with the North Norfolk Concert Band (run by Elisabeth’s husband, Howard) has put on seasonal concerts in churches up and down the north Norfolk coast and sung at weddings and various village events. The success of these has attracted a significant new membership beyond the scope of the CADS cast so that the choir has grown to between thirty and forty performers. It was
thus decided that CADSingers was no longer an accurate title for the group. After many suggestions were flagged up, it was decided that Coastal Singers would be an engaging and accurate description of the current group. However, the historical connection to CADS will always be there and with about fifteen members with strong CADS’ connections in Coastal Singers, that link will not be forgotten.
John Roebuck, Chairman of CADS At the present time, Coastal Singers are rehearsing carols for their Christmas Concert under their musical director, Elisabeth Rooke. The concert, which also will feature the North Norfolk Concert Band under the direction of Howard Rooke, will take place on the afternoon of Saturday 7th December at St Andrew’s Church, Holt commencing at 3pm. Festive refreshments will be available, and there will be a retiring collection to be divided between the choir, band and a local charity.
Coastal Singers are keen to welcome new members, especially tenors. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings, usually at the Harbour Rooms in Blakeney.
For further details please contact Elisabeth Rooke on 01263 740993.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS TASTER DAY HAILED AS GREAT SUCCESS!
Over 150 budding athletes with learning disabilities and volunteer sports coaches from right across Norfolk descended on the UEA Sportspark recently to find out what Special Olympics has to offer.
Cricket Club, Bawburgh Driving Range, Norfolk Cricket Board, Easton Family Golf Centre, Sewell Park Centre Boccia Club, Easton College Disability Tennis hub, Bungay
As well as taster sessions in cricket, tennis, golf, athletics and boccia, those attending received a free lunch courtesy of Sportspark catering and local supermarkets and went home with a Special Olympics Norfolk T-shirt to remember the day by.
Organised by Special Olympics Norfolk in conjunction with Active Norfolk, the day was hailed an outstanding success by Bob Billson, National Development Manager at Special Olympics Great Britain, who attended the one day event at the Sportspark.

The St John’s Singers get ready for Advent
Preparations for our annual candlelit Advent Carol Service are nearly complete. It will be held on Advent Sunday 1 December at 6pm. This service has become very popular. The beautiful setting, lovely carols and familiar readings form an evocative start to the Christmas season.
The choir sings in church on special occasions and Feast days. At full strength we number up to sixteen singers and have a wide repertoire of anthems, and a good balance of male and female voices. This enables us to take full advantage of the fine acoustic of the church.

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society are delighted to announce that, thanks to a generous grant of £10,450 from the North Norfolk District Council Big Society Fund, their World War One Centenary commemoration project is now fully funded.
The Choral Society has commissioned the renowned composer Patrick Hawes to write a new large scale choral work to commemorate the outbreak of the First World War in 2014. The world premiere performance will take place in Norwich Cathedral on Saturday 12 July 2014 as part of the First World War Centenary Partnership, led by IWM (Imperial War Museums). Prior to that Patrick will deliver a workshop at the Auden Theatre on 17 May 2014, open to both children and adults, to talk about the art of composing and share some of the music prior to its first formal performance. The BSF grant will make it possible for the choir to offer more than 100 free places to local school children. Later in the year a local premiere will take place on Saturday 8 November 2014 in St Peter’s Church Sheringham.
Norfolk and the Choral Society is hugely appreciative of the acknowledgement and support of North Norfolk District Council.
Patrick Hawes recently visited the 100-strong community choir during a rehearsal to talk
from sacred texts that she knew in depth, as well as first hand accounts of her final days. The premiere performance will be accompanied by the English Chamber Orchestra with soprano soloist Elin Manahan Thomas and a children’s choir made up from students attending Gresham’s International Britten Music Course 2014.
Musical Director for the choir and Director of the International Britten Music Course at Gresham’s, Nathan Waring said, "I am enormously grateful to all donor organisations who have contributed thus far to this project, including grants for the arts from Arts Council England and North Norfolk Big Society Fund. Their support and Patrick Hawes’ recent visit to a Society rehearsal involvement in this project has enabled L-R: Nathan Waring (musical director), Patrick Hawes, us to move forwards in the preparation Bob Cumber (chairman), Lawrence Tao (assistant of these unique musical events to mark musical director). this month’s meeting featured rob spray talking on the subject of the ‘Chalk reef off overstrand and Cromer’.
The meeting was opened by the chairman Joe Gaston followed by Mrs V Bond who reminded the club and guests of up-coming events. Mr Spray began his talk by highlighting the difference between wildlife and habitat study on land as opposed to the sea where effects of humans, gravity and space availability had more of a negative effect than in a marine environment. Defining the range of the reef from Cley to West Runton, he used a series of still photos and videos to illustrate the range of animal and plant life on wrecks and in the channels which stretch outwards from Sheringham. There were beautiful chalk cave and arches that had taken millions of years to develop and now provide habitat for many varieties of fish and crustacean. He followed up his main presentation with photos and videos of the seabed and marine life off the coast of Overstrand. As part of the Marine Conservation Society, he would like to see more people taking to exploring this valuable and beautiful feature of our coastline. Evidently, on calm days when the water is settled and blue, it is possible to see parts of the reef in all its beauty just past the ends of the groynes at Sheringham. A vote of thanks was proposed by Ian Irving and the 46 members and seven guests enthusiastically showed their appreciation. The raffle was won by M. Davies with second prize going to J Fathers.

barbara Collins came to us in october and her title was ‘a taste of the orient’.
Her arrangements reflected her title with fabulous flowers and foliage. A dragon made by Barbara was the centrepiece of an arrangement with gladioli and proteas. As usual there were many entries in the competition entitles ‘Oriental’ and judged by Barbara with good comments. Best in Show was Wendy Randall.
Our next meeting will be on Monday 18 November at 7.30pm at Cromer Junior School and our demonstrator will be Jennie Baker, her title will be ‘Home for Christmas’. Visitors are welcome.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER GARDENING IN THE SHADE
Some people think that to own a shady garden is a matter for sympathy but the famous garden writer, Margery Fish, feels that it is one for envy. She writes that ‘anyone with a garden without shade knows how difficult it is to grow many plants, for you cannot make shade overnight, but it is usually possible to contrive sunny spots in the shadiest gardens.’
She states that ‘If I had to choose between a sunny and a shady garden I would choose the shady one every time, not only for its peace and timelessness but also for the plants that can be grown in it. It seems to me that they are often more interesting and more beautiful than those that like to bask in the sun.’
If the whole garden can be seen at once there is a tendency to pay less attention to its treasures than if they are discovered in shady unexpected places under trees, behind walls and round corners. This was brought home to me on a recent guided walk around some of the historic gardens in the City of London close to St Paul’s Cathedral. It is hard to imagine a more hostile situation for
gardens than in a city, surrounded by high rise buildings which create deep shade and reduce the rain falling on the soil and with winds that funnel from the River Thames and batter the trees and shrubs. Nevertheless we saw a wide variety of plants that seemed to thrive and produced little areas to calm the city workers and residents and act as refuges for wildlife. As well as the usual plants that enjoy or survive shade such as ivies, ferns, hostas, hellebores and perhaps surprisingly hydrangeas we saw exotic trees such as a Tulip Tree, a Weeping Mulberry, a Persian Ironwood and Ginkgos. Mixed with some variegated shrubs and under planted with bulbs they produce a wonderful garden effect. The first garden we visited was the Cleary Garden in Queen Victoria Street. This garden is named after Fred Cleary, who, during the 1970s was instrumental in encouraging the planting of trees and the creation of new gardens throughout the square mile. During the Blitz, the house which once stood here was destroyed exposing the cellars. A shoemaker called Joe Brandis decided that he would create a garden from the rubble, collecting mud from the river banks and transporting soil from his own garden in Walthamstow to the site. In the garden is a bed of Yatsuka Tree Peonies sent from Japan as a symbol of goodwill in 2006. The next garden on the route was Whittington Gardens named in honour of one of the City’s

best known Lord Mayors who was buried in the nearby church of St Michael Paternoster Royal in 1423. Here Rosemary and Thyme can be found amongst the dense planting in this garden.
In Monument Street, there is a lovely garden at St Dunstan-in-the –East. The original medieval church was damaged in the Great Fire of London but was rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren in 1697 only to be damaged again in the Blitz. Now the ruins of the walls and windows are beautifully draped with ornamental vines. In the garden grows the pineapple scented Moroccan broom and the Japanese Snowball, Viburnum plicatum.
However the memory that lingers from the walk is not necessarily the plants but also the hard landscaping within the gardens, the paving and gravel, the large planters, generous seating and the statuary. The most impressive statue was one of the ‘Barge Master and Swan Upper’ in a small garden in front of St. James Garlickhythe Church and opposite the Vintner’s Hall in Upper Thames Street which commemorates the Livery Company’s right to share with the Queen the ownership of swans on the river. Youth Hubs are a Hit in North Norfolk
Since July this year, Youth Workers in north Norfolk have been setting up new Youth Hubs in Sheringham, Cromer, Stalham and Mundesley. Funded by the North Norfolk Youth Advisory Board, the Hubs are designed to give young people more opportunities to get involved in their local communities, take part in positive activities, and to provide a safe, welcoming space where they can socialise and access youth services.
The Hubs are exclusively young person led and are attracting young people from all different backgrounds, making them an exciting and dynamic addition to their local communities.
Young people are given the opportunity to design, plan and take the lead in deciding how the Hubs run with the support of professional youth workers. The Cromer youth have had a crab fishing competition, a movie night and are now designing art work for their youth room at Merchant’s Place. Mundesley and Stalham young people are in the early stages of
planning a charity event, and will be raising money for local causes as well as decorating the Hub rooms with their own designs. In Sheringham, young people are given the opportunity to try bush craft skills, carve pumpkins and make smoothies at the newly refurbished Oddfellow’s Hall.
the Hubs run twice a month from the following venues: • Cromer – Merchant’s Place, Wednesdays 4-6pm • Mundesley – scout Hut, Wednesdays 4-6pm • sheringham – oddfellow’s Hall, thursdays 4:30-6:30pm • stalham – sports Centre, thursday 4-6pm
Youth Workers, Hannah Garrard and Will Mills, are helping young people run their Hubs and are a regular presence in local schools and at other youth groups, building interest and enthusiasm for the projects.
Crazee Kidz Club is a youth club based at Roughton Village Hall and we meet every second and fourth Friday in the month during term time and we are open to anyone aged 6-16 years. We started in September 2009 and since then we have grown in what we offer and do for the young people of Roughton and the surrounds villages and towns.
At the youth club we offer various activities ranging from silly challenges like how many smarties can you move from one bowl to another with just a straw to crafts. We also offer physical activities like dodge ball and stuck in the mud and many other and we have a games consoles. Some sessions we do team building games and team challenges and each session ends with a leaders challenge. This is when the leaders make themselves look a bit silly by doing a silly challenge like eating cold custard or Weetabix and tomato sauce.
As well as that we also do several special events during the year like the annual pancake races which are held within the school grounds where we have pancake races as well as pancakes to eat and make yourself. Another special event we have recently started is a young meets old where some of our members prepared and serve a meal for our older generation. This in turns helps the young people to gain various skills and they are working towards a Norfolk youth award by doing this.
As a club we also provide discos and a bouncy castle for our sessions
“Young people are free to use the Hubs how they wish as a place to drop in and socialise with friends, get advice from professionals, or have more of a say in how their community is run says Hannah Garrard. “It’s been an exciting project to be involved in, and has a real sustainable ethos which will benefit communities and young people’s lives.”
if you or someone you know would like to get involved in one of the Hubs, then you can get in touch via facebook at Facebook/nnHubs and message Hannah or Will to find out when the next Hub will run, email or call Will Mills, senior Youth and Community Worker on 07876864281 or williammills@map.uk.net
and also to hire out in an effort to help raise funds for the running costs. We hire our services for various events including weddings, birthday parties, fetes etc.
Another way in which we raise funds for the club is through our recycling schemes. At present we run two schemes. The first is a paper bin which is located at Roughton Village Hall. The other is we are collecting used ink cartridges.
We have also recently started a new mother and toddler group in Roughton Village Hall called Little Stars which meet every Wednesday during term time between 10am and 11:30am and on the third Wednesday each month they have a lunch club and finish at 12:30pm. This group in turn feeds into our local playgroup based at St Mary’s Church School in Roughton.
We are also currently looking to extend what we do and provide more sessions as well as starting a new group for the over 11 and we have a long term plan of purchasing our building and turning it into a youth and community Centre. For all our future plans we are seeking more help as well as finances to hope us achieve our goal. We thank you for reading this article about our club and if you would like to know more about what we do as a group or would like to help either in person or in any other way please feel free to get in touch with us.
We can be contacted by phoning Paddy bennett our club coordinator on 01263 768138 or via e-mail at enquiries@crazeekidzclub.co.uk or visit our web at www.crazeekidzclub.co.uk .

CoMMunitY DoG WarDen sCHeMe North Norfolk District Council has launched a community dog warden scheme to crack down on dog fouling across the district and is appealing for volunteers to sign up. The role of a community dog warden is to educate irresponsible dog owners that dog fouling is not acceptable, and together with support from NNDC’s Environmental Protection Team, to promote the virtues of responsible dog ownership. Volunteers wishing to become a community dog warden will need to be friendly, open and willing to help make a difference. It is a nonconfrontational role, and wardens will not have the power to issue fixed penalty notices. Volunteers can offer to work whenever they are free to give up their time, although patrols are not expected to last more than three hours at a time. Each warden can expect to receive full training and will be provided with a high visibility jacket and a pocket notebook. Volunteers can sign up online at www.northnorfolk.org/environment/18836.asp or can contact the Environmental Protection Team for more information on 01263 516085.

The Glass Case
A small but intriguing space for the visual arts within Cromer Library which aims to show a programme of work by contemporary artists both Norfolk and nationally based who explore the space within a glass case and the relationship of the visual and book arts to the library.
The space is curated by Maria Pavledis, who is both an artist and Community librarian.
The first exhibition ‘Peep Show’ by Sarah Wilson starts on 18 November and is an installation working with textiles, print and paper sculpture.
Sarah Wilson uses textiles in printmaking processes to create works of delicacy and intricate detail, for this show she is developing prints into three-dimensional objects which explore themes of dressing up and display, exhibition and concealment.
Other artists showing include David Davies, Anna Lise Horsley and Karen Apps and The Black Cat Press.
For more information on The Glass Case please contact Maria Pavledis maria.pavledis@norfolk.gov.uk
Lee Grandjean exhibits at Theatre in the Woods, Holt
The Theatre in the Woods at Gresham’s Senior School in Holt will be transformed in November with an ambitious exhibition of sculpture by Lee Grandjean. The project Weights and Measures is the first of its kind to be held at the school. Large scale hybrid figures created out of junk and their attendant luggage will emerge out of the wooded landscape to evoke elements of theatre and elicit a dialogue between the sculpted forms and the space. The exhibition is free for visitors and open between 10am and 4pm daily (except Sunday) from 8th and 29th November 2013.
This is the first event of its kind to take place in this space and will be a unique opportunity to see this work presented in a wonderfully atmospheric way. Lee Grandjean’s drawings will also be on show in the Nicholson Gallery for the duration of the exhibition.
Further details about this artist can be found on his website at www.leegrandjean.co.uk
The Gallery Norfolk offers a handpicked selection of art, glass, photography, ceramics, jewellery and stylish gifts.

North Norfolk households given more time to save money on gas and electricity bills People living in North Norfolk have been given extra time to sign up for an energy scheme that could help cut their gas and electricity bills.
North Norfolk’s Big Switch and Save scheme has been extended until 18 November, meaning people now have another month to join.
The first round of the scheme was launched in North Norfolk in March this year, with 2796 households in the area registering. 70% of households providing realistic energy usage figures were able to save, 46% were able to save more than £50 a year and 23% up to £50 a year. Those households able to save through the scheme achieved an overall average annual
saving of £126, with the highest average annual saving of £266 for ‘dual fuel’ customers opting for online billing.
It is hoped that a new Collective Switching Tariff will be available in time for the energy auction and that this will result in a better offer for customers switching supplier in this way. Anyone who missed out on the first round or who thinks they could make even more savings on their gas or electricity bills, is now able to register for a second round of the Big Switch and Save scheme, and the deadline for signing up has been extended to 18 November.
NNDC Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, John Lee, said “We all know that gas and electricity costs are soaring and energy switching is one way individual households
can reduce those costs. NNDC is delighted to be able to offer a second opportunity for people in North Norfolk to register for the Big Switch and Save. Our experience in the first round of the scheme shows that it really can help people cut their energy costs in these difficult times.” Residents can register through the Big Switch and Save website www.bigswitchandsave.co.uk.
All you need is a bill or a statement from your energy supplier which includes the energy you used last year or your estimated usage for the year ahead. Registering is quick and easy and up to five households can be registered from a single email address so you can help family, friends and neighbours to register if they do not have their own internet access. A helpline is available on 0800 0488285.
Council playgrounds set for improvement
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) Cabinet is set to approve plans to spend up to £100,000 to improve children’s playgrounds in the district.
Following a thorough review of the 29 council-owned playgrounds in North Norfolk, a report set to be approved by the council’s Cabinet on 4 November recommends that up to £100,000 be spent on replacing and improving equipment at four sites, in North Walsham, Sheringham and Cromer.
Rhodri Oliver, NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Assets said “This is really good news for the communities concerned. The funds were included in this year’s budget and following a thorough assessment and the involvement of local families we have identified four potential sites for improvement. Three will go ahead very soon, in Cromer and North Walsham, while we are working with local residents to finalise ‘first phase’ improvements and then further plans for the fourth, at Cromer Road, Sheringham.”
John Lee, NNDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said “Children’s playgrounds are important for local communities. They 26
are places not just where children can play and enjoy being with friends, but where parents can also meet, and they help to generate a real community spirit. This council wants to help local communities to help themselves, and by talking to and working with local people to improve their children’s play facilities this is exactly what we are doing here.”
The playgrounds set to benefit from the funding are: Cromer – Fernsfield (replacing unsafe equipment that had already been removed - £8,000) and The Meadow (replacing equipment that had been removed in 2012 - £32,000);
north Walsham – Acorn Road (equipment for younger children £13,000);
sheringham – Cromer Road (working with Sheringham Playpark Revamp Appeal - £20,000 with the possibility of contributing up to a further £22,000 towards their scheme).
Improved signage will also be provided for 20 other sites across the district. Cromer Times 434 November 16th 2013
Festive Cheer at Blickling over three weekends!
It’s that time again when the Blickling Estate plays host to some traditional Christmas fayre over the first three weekends of December. Come and be welcomed by characters from the past into this wonderful Jacobean house, beautifully decorated for the festive season, and be tempted by an array of exclusive gift ideas, mostly produced by local craftspeople. Have you ever wondered how past residents of Blickling would have celebrated Christmas? Well this year you’ll be able to get a real taste. Blickling’s costumed interpretation group, the “Diggers” will be re-enacting Christmas through the ages, giving visitors a feel of what it would have been like in Jacobean times, when Henry Hobart restored the medieval and Tudor manor; in Georgian times, when the second Earl of Buckinghamshire redesigned the house; and in Queen Victoria’s reign when Lady Constance made the parterre garden. The atmosphere of the 1930s will also be depicted, when the house was owned by Lord Lothian. Characters from this era will be in the great hall, greeting and talking with visitors; the Victorians will be in the brown drawing
room; the Georgians in the dining room and the Jacobeans in the Long Gallery- all in costume and talking about Christmas foods, decorations and customs from the 4 specific eras, giving visitors a life-like experience of the house at Christmas and illustrating how customs varied as time went by. Designed for all ages, the characters will make visitors feel festive and welcome and, in each of the rooms they occupy, the decorations and floral arrangements will also be appropriately themed. After wandering through the house you will be drawn in by the welcoming aroma of mulled wine and mince pies in the “Christmas courtyard”, where there will be a marquee full of Christmas gift ideas as well as festive snacks and drinks. Christmas trees, wreaths and greenery will also be on sale along with garden gifts, hot chestnuts and other seasonal delights. Father Christmas will be in his grotto each day to take those all important orders and there will be traditional Christmas lunches served in a
decorated Lord Lothian’s study or less formally, in Hobart’s cafe on demand. The air will be full of festive cheer, with music and carols to ensure that you leave, touched by the spirit of Christmas. Over the weekends 30 November-1 December, 7-8 December, the marquee in the “Christmas courtyard” will be brimming with Christmas crafts and gifts – a stunning selection of not-on-the-highstreet gift ideas to suit all tastes and pockets. On the final weekend, 14-15 December, the marquee will be adorned with “festive food” – including a fabulous selection of delicious local fayre. Doors open 11am-5pm and access to the Christmas Courtyard, the shop and restaurant is free to all. Entry to the house and gardens will be free for National Trust members, with usual admission fees for non-members.
Mozart and Bach for Cromer Christmas Concert The popular Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society return to Cromer Parish Church on Saturday 14 December at 7.30pm for their Christmas concert.
Directed by Nathan Waring the 100 strong choir will be joined by the SCCS Chamber Orchestra for what promises to be an exciting performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem.
The soloists will be: Jane MaySysum, Soprano; Freya Jacklin, Alto; Paul Smy, Tenor and Andrew Weeks, Bass.
Mozart left his stunning Requiem unfinished when he died in 1791. It was completed by Franz Xaver Sussmayer and remains a significant piece in the choral music repertoire.
The concert will also include Johan Sebastian Bach’s charming advent

Council officer graduates with merit
Andrew McCloud, Assistant Coastal Engineer with North Norfolk District Council, was awarded a Foundation Degree in Civil Engineering (with merit) from University Campus Suffolk at a graduation ceremony at the end of October.
D.A.P.
MOTOR ENGINEERS 01263 515076
DAVID A. PYMAN
Unit 5, Stonehill Way, Holt Road, Cromer, Norfolk NR27 9JW
Andrew joined NNDC as Assistant Coastal Engineer in February 2013 after working as a Technician Engineer at Waveney District Council from leaving school.
Both councils have supported him in his studies and now, with further NNDC support and encouragement, his aim, following two more year’s part time study, is to achieve an honours degree.
Andrew said “It’s been hard work getting this far, but I really enjoy my job and I relish the opportunity to study engineering further. Working as a coastal engineer, trying to balance what’s physically possible alongside what’s allowable in such an ever-changing and environmentally sensitive environment is a huge challenge, and that is what makes my role so interesting. I am really thankful to both Waveney and North Norfolk District Councils for all the support they’ve given to help me get this far.
As well as achieving his Foundation Degree, Andrew has been nominated by his course leader for the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) ‘Best Student’ regional and national awards. Each university is allowed to submit one nomination each year, and the results should be available at the end of November.
And Andrew is also continuing to work with two of his tutors on one of his last year’s assignments with a view to submitting it for publication in the ICE Proceedings Maritime Engineering Journal.
NNDC Cabinet Member for the Coast, Angie Fitch-Tillett, said “We were delighted to welcome Andrew into our Coastal Team earlier this year. He has already made his mark by initiating some successful projects and gave an excellent presentation at our Summer Coastal Forum. I am extremely proud of his success in gaining his degree and delighted that he is in the mix for outstanding student of the year.”
NNDC Chief Executive, Sheila Oxtoby, said “This council has a very high reputation nationally for the quality of its coastal management and expertise, and we are keen to ensure that remains the case. Having knowledgeable, well-qualified and committed staff is obviously important in that, and we are delighted that our support for Andrew as well as his hard work has been so well rewarded. He deserves every credit for the effort he has put in and which, I am sure, he will continue to put into his studies and his work in our excellent coastal team on behalf of North Norfolk coastal communities.”

What a privilege it was to hear this superb orchestra performing in Cromer Parish Church. Norfolk County Youth Orchestra made up of 71 instrumentalists, the average age being 17 years, coming together from all over Norfolk confirmed the fact that we have young people who have worked so hard in perfecting skills on their chosen instruments, coupled with expert teaching and the support and encouragement from parents.
Conducted this evening by Andrew Morley playing music by Benjamin Britten, Antonin Dvorak, George Fenton, Arvo Part and Shostakovich, gave performances full of colour, maturity and expertise throughout this concert. Each of the sections, strings, woodwind, brass and percussion was ‘played’ by Andrew Morley whose energetic conducting could not fail to bring about the enthusiasm from every single instrumentalist playing this evening. His positive direction and musical rhythm surely is the key to this young orchestra’s success.
At the end of the concert the large audience displayed their appreciation by long and rapturous applause, well deserved.
It was sad to learn from a short announcement during the interval the possibility of more cuts in funding regarding tuition in schools by dedicated peripatetic teachers. Here it must be said that the very people in government, who I am sure enjoy listening to music, who attend concerts whether it be classical, romantic, jazz, heavy metal or pop, must realise that a great many of the performers’ interest in playing instruments followed by expert tuition was kindled in Norfolk’s schools and colleges.
It would be good if, before ‘wielding the axe’ they may think again that music enriches lives, stirs emotions in its many diverse forms and its uses, for example operating theatres, dentists, surgeries, assisting in healing for certain a conditions and for worship in its many forms. North Norfolk District Council seeks volunteers for new community dog warden scheme North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has launched a community dog warden scheme to crack down on dog fouling across the district and is appealing for volunteers to sign up.
Dog fouling is a huge concern for residents, not just because of the mess, but because it poses health risks that can cause stomach upset, sore throat, asthma and in extreme cases it can cause blindness.
NNDC figures show that historically, the number of complaints it receives about dog fouling increases as the evenings start to draw in. With plans to re-launch its ‘No Messing’ anti dog-fouling campaign, NNDC hopes that both the campaign and the introduction of community dog wardens will assure residents that reducing the presence of dog fouling in public places is a priority.
The role of a community dog warden is to educate irresponsible dog owners that dog fouling is not acceptable, and together with support from NNDC’s Environmental Protection team, to promote the virtues of responsible dog ownership.
John Lee, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Environment said “When the clocks go back and the nights start to draw in, this is when we start to see a steady increase in complaints of dog fouling. Dog owners need to understand that they are posing a risk to the safety of
others if they do not clear up after their dogs, and using the cover of darkness is just not acceptable. As a community dog warden, you will be a valuable part of your community and will be given the full support of NNDC’s Environmental Protection officers to help educate people on how we can make our local environment and community a cleaner place.
Volunteers wishing to become a community dog warden will need to be friendly, open and willing to help make a difference. It is a nonconfrontational role, and wardens will not have the power to issue fixed penalty notices.
will be providing regular information to NNDC’s enforcement officers. Irresponsible dog owners should be clear that we will not tolerate dog fouling in North Norfolk and we’ll have no hesitation in fining offenders.’
Volunteers can sign up online at
www.northnorfolk.org/environment/ 18836.asp, or can contact the Environmental
Protection team for more information on 01263 516085.
Volunteers can offer to work whenever they are free to give up their time, although patrols are not expected to last more than three hours at a time.
Each warden can expect to receive full training and will be provided with a high visibility jacket and a pocket notebook.
Mr Lee added ‘Although community dog wardens will not be able to issue fixed penalty notices, they
