St Margaret’s Church Thorpe Market back on the Exhibition Trail!

Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent

WANTED – ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE!

A recent exhibition by a North Walsham group of artists illustrated just how an attractive venue the building is. A continuous run of screens at the back and along both sides of the nave can provide 78 feet of vertical screens. Table tops across the pews offer further effective display space. The windows can be blacked out if required and modern lighting has been installed.

In the past up to four exhibitions by local community groups a year have taken place. The thought is that smaller private exhibitions could also be accommodated, using fewer screens and perhaps for shorter periods of time.

The church’s exhibition facilities are freely available for individuals to show their talents in a very attractive venue. Please contact info@thorpemarket.org.uk for further details

Heritage Lottery Fund awards £8,500 to About With Friends to mark First World War Centenary

About With Friends has received £8,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for its project, Friends in Flanders

Awarded through HLF’s First World War: then and now programme, the project will focus on forging links between Cromer and the Flanders region of Belgium. Launched at Halsey House on 5 September, the British Legion Care Home that is one of the key organisations supporting About With Friends, the first part of the project was a seven day Battlefield Tour to the region around Ieper for members of the charity who all have learning disabilities. This took place from 8 -14 September. The members recorded their activities in Belgium through video, photography, sound and in writing and these recollections will be used to create talks, presentations and an exhibition.

The exhibition will be launched at Halsey House on 11 November with a short singing and dramatic performance by members of About With Friends. It will remain at Halsey House until Christmas after which it will tour the district.

The idea behind the project began as a simple trip to the battlefields for AWF members. As most did not attend mainstream schools they were not afforded this opportunity whilst at school. However, About With Friends has strong ties with the local community running several lunch clubs for the Over 60s and visiting residents of Halsey House on a weekly basis. So it was decided to get them all involved in the project. AWF will be laying a wreath at the Menin gate on behalf of Halsey House and are taking a gift – made by its members – from Cromer British Legion to Ieper British Legion.

As well as partly funding the trip, the grant will enable About With Friends to produce a high quality permanent record of their experiences using a variety of media. As well as the exhibition and presentations there will be a project website:

Commenting on the award, the organisation’s CEO, Helen Dalton-Hare BEM said “We are

The head of the HLF in the East of England, said “The impact of the First World War was far reaching, touching and shaping every corner of the UK and beyond. The Heritage Lottery Fund has already invested more than £58million in projects – large and small - that are marking this Centenary. Our new small grants programme is enabling even more communities like those involved in About With Friends to explore the continuing legacy of this conflict and help local young people in particular to broaden their understanding of how it has shaped our modern world.”

Northrepps community to benefit from North Norfolk enjoy. It provides not just an opportunity to watch a good variety of Big Society Fund grant films for all ages, but it offers a place to meet friends and make new

Residents of Northrepps are set to benefit from a second grant from North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) Big Society Fund.

Northrepps Film Society has been awarded a grant of £3,268 from the Big Society Fund to enable it to purchase audio visual equipment for its community cinema. Previously, the Film Society hired equipment from ‘Village Screen’ in Wells which was not a long-term, viable option.

In 2013, Northrepps Film Society received a start-up grant of £750 from NNDC’s Big Society Fund to set up the now well-established community cinema based at Northrepps Village Hall. The Society found that opening a local cinema was particularly beneficial for residents who were unable to travel to the nearest cinema in Cromer.

Andrew Gilling, Northrepps Film Society Chairman, said “The community cinema has grown in to a valued facility for the whole community to

Angie Fitch-Tillett, North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member and Ward Member for Northrepps, said “I am delighted that North Norfolk District Council’s Big Society Fund has again been able to support Northrepps Film Society. They have worked exceptionally hard to make the community cinema a success - it has become a great social venue for local people.

“Accessible and affordable amenities are an essential part of a community’s well-being - bringing a cinema experience to a rural village like Northrepps gives local people an opportunity to enjoy the latest and popular films on their doorstep and come together socially.”

Northrepps Film Society has also received a grant of £2000 from Northrepps Parish towards the cost of the audio visual equipment.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon Our Christmas Party Menu and Booking Form are now available for the pub and we have produced a leaflet giving details of all our Christmas events and I am delighted to tell you that we are already taking bookings so if you want to be sure of a particular date my advice is to book as soon as possible. But before we get to Christmas we have a great autumn to look forward to with new menus, and a few special surprises along the way.

Our web site www.whitehorseovestrand.co.uk has all the latest news, menus and special accommodation offers so it’s worth having a look. The village is still busy with holiday visitors and we expect to see many of our summer guests returning for a short break with us in the coming months. The outside of the pub is being painted and repaired before the winter weather sets in and the clocks go back which I might remind everyone is on Sunday 26th October so you still have a few weeks of lighter evening for a stroll around the village before enjoying an evening meal and a pint at the White Horse.

Nathan Boon’s Recipe Traditional Scone Recipe

(serves 6) Ingredients 250g Self Raising Flour 40g Sugar 1 tsp Baking Powder Handful of Raisins

55g Soft Butter 150ml Milk 2 Egg Whites

Method Whisk egg whites until they have doubled in volume, then add the Sugar and Butter, stir and add rest of mix. Grease six ring moulds place on a tray on top of baking mat. Bake at 180 degrees for around 12 minutes or until you can push a knife into the scone and it comes out clean. Serve with Strawberry Jam and Clotted Cream.

CROMER MUSIC EVENINGS 2014-2015 SEASON Cromer Music Evenings begins its autumn season on Sunday 12 October with the return of classical saxophonist Huw Wiggin, accompanied by pianist James Sherlock. Huw has previously stunned and amazed our regular audiences with his virtuosic performances, playing a wide variety of old and new arrangements. The duo has performed all over the world, winning numerous prizes.

This year Huw won the coveted Gold Medal at the Royal Overseas Music Competition, while James Sherlock won the accompanists’ award. James is also a brilliant solo pianist in his own right.

Their performance of varied music of all ages promises to be one of the most thrilling of the year: not to be missed. On Sunday 2 November Cromer Music Evenings welcomes guitarist Manus Noble, one of the most innovative young guitarists whose varied and eclectic concerts are already in high demand. Manus not only plays a wide classical range but composes original works that challenge preconceptions of what is possible

on the guitar. He has already played at the Wigmore Hall, the Purcell Room, Cadogan Hall, Sage Gateshead and Bridgewater Hall.

Manus Noble is supported by Making Music’s Philip and Dorothy Green Award for Young Concert Artist’s scheme.

Concerts start at 3pm at Templewood, Frogshall, Northrepps, near Cromer. Tickets sold at the door, no advance bookings. Admission: Members £8. Non members £12. Students and children £2.

For membership details telephone Sue Riggott 01263 578152 and for programme information call Tina Anderson on 01263 579400 or for further performance dates, visit the website: www.cromermusicevenings.org.uk

Confusion at Christmas Neil Robertson, who lives in North Walsham, usually spends his evenings training for his next boxing tournament. During the day, Neil works as a support worker at the Your Choice Social Centre, in North Walsham, but at rehearsals he is a seven year old boy who is obsessed with the well known TV game, ‘A Question of Sport.’ Will he remember that he is in a nativity play, or will he start adding to the script?

It turns out that they are not entirely clear about the Nativity story either. One of the shepherds, played by Zoe, tells everyone that there was a “fat man called John Burgeon” with Mary and the baby Jesus in the stable in the Nativity story. According to Zoe, it says so in the Christmas carol, Silent Night. (Zoe has mis-heard the line, ‘Round yon virgin, mother and child!)

Such misunderstandings are heard by primary school teachers every Christmas, some are very funny, some are just odd, but Tim Firth, author of The Calendar Girls has taken these priceless gems and written a hilarious play, called Flint Street Nativity based on a classroom of children, waiting to present their Nativity play to their parents. Their long suffering teacher, has to deal with the

Another local man in this production is Neville Rowe, an ambulance driver from Trunch. Neville plays the part of Joseph, who gets stage struck and can’t remember his lines, or where he is supposed to stand on the stage. Things are further complicated by the fact that no-one is sure of their lines or the songs they are supposed to sing.

Needless to say, their Nativity play does not go according to plan, and the ensuing chaos is made worse when the class pet, a stick insect, escapes in the middle of the play.

The Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society, who are celebrating their 100th year this year, are hoping to raise £500 for the BBC Radio Norfolk and the Salvation Army’s Tins and Toys appeal from this incredibly funny production.

Local Butcher Brings Home The Banger

Icarus Hines beat off the competition at the 10th Annual Battle Of The Banger earlier this month to claim the top prize of People’s Choice. Over 4,000 people attended the event held at the Forum this year with the majority of voters choosing Icarus’ Norfolk sausage. It was a firm favourite as it was also awarded the runner up spot in the Judges and Sponsors choice category.

With a vast array of flavours it was tricky deciding which variety to compete with so

PIETASTIC!

A new restaurant has opened in Cromer offering another choice to the expanding food culture.

Icarus turned to Facebook to help. He thought it was obvious which sausage to enter.

“I was going to take our Traditional variety as it is our best seller but my family thought it a good idea to put it to a public vote via Facebook. We got a great response and it surprised me when our Norfolk flavour received over half of the public vote. That persuaded me to change my mind, and it’s a good job I did. It just goes to show my customers know their sausage.”

Kew’s Pie & Mash Shop offer a simple menu using only the finest local ingredients from Norfolk.

Kew’s Pie & Mash shop opened its doors at the end of July by owners Shelley Dickinson & Ben Kew and was an instant hit with the locals and tourists visiting Cromer.

Shelley says “It was important for us to offer a simple menu based on the exceptional pies from Mr Kew’s Pies. It made perfect sense for us to open this restaurant as we believe in the philosophy of keeping it simple but doing it really well and offering great value for money. We want customers to feel relaxed as soon as they walk in and eat great comfort food as well as experience great service.”

The whole restaurant has been decorated with a rustic feel, the colours and lighting are warm and welcoming and has a fully licensed bar serving hot and cold drinks.

Ben Kew says “We have four main pies including a vegetarian with specials that change regularly. All the pies are handmade in North Walsham by Mr Kew’s Pies and delivered daily, these awardwinning pies already have a strong reputation and following of loyal local customers. Our potatoes come from a local producer as well.”

Along with their pies they offer Bangers & Mash with the sausages being supplied by Icarus Hines. “Icarus has been a great help and really supportive of us” says Ben

Customers who voted on Facebook for their favourite sausage were also entered into a competition to win a year’s supply of Icarus Hines sausages. David Hobart of Southrepps was announced as the winner on Saturday.

Icarus expressed how good it felt to tell David the news:

“Being able to give something back to such a loyal customer feels wonderful. I know that David will make the most of his prize and it will give him the chance to try every one of our sausage flavours.”

Competition at Battle of the Banger was stiff from the five other experienced butchers, so it was no mean feat to come out on top. The advantage may have come from being the only butcher to cook on charcoal but one thing is for certain, Icarus Hines can now officially boast he has the best sausage in Norfolk.

Felbrigg Parish Council

Felbrigg Junction

To all users of the A148/B1436 Felbrigg Junction

The Felbrigg Junction where the B1436 intersects with the A148 Holt to Cromer Road has long been a source of frustration for drivers using this junction in all directions.

Felbrigg Parish Council are promoting an initiative to have a roundabout installed with appropriate speed restrictions on the approaches to this intersection in an effort to prevent accidents and improve traffic flow.

The B1436 is regarded as the “Cromer Bypass” and designated by Norfolk County Council Highways dept. as a Main Distributer Route.

Local, genuine, honest company. Call now for your free in-home consultation Bringing quality back to North Norfolk.

In promoting this initiative Felbrigg Parish Council already have the support of the Chief Executive of North Norfolk District Council Mrs Sheila Oxtoby, the NNDC planning committee, The National Trust at Felbrigg Hall, all three Emergency Services who use the “Cromer Bypass” daily, the innumerable business and commuter users of this busy route and the ever increasing number of tourists who regularly use this junction and are essential to this area.

When it was agreed that a similar traffic flow problem existed at Roughton on the same road where the B1436 intersects with the A140, the construction of two mini roundabouts immediately solved the problem, which in itself would justify similar action at the junction of the A148 and the B1436 . No purchase of land would be necessary to effect this improvement.

If you agree with this proposal please sign this letter and return it to the address below by 30th September 2014. Thank you John W Blair (Chairman Felbrigg Parish Council)

I agree a roundabout is required at the B1436 / A148 junction.

Court sentence for 80 mile charity bike ride

Simon Court is taking part in a charity bike ride to raise money for the charity that supported his family through the diagnosis and treatment of his wife, Jane.

In 2010, Jane was diagnosed with breast cancer after feeling considerable pain. She was diagnosed during her doctor’s appointment, and had to break the news to her three children, one of whom was away at university. “It was horrible. She was in a room filled with people. I told her to grab a good friend and take the phone somewhere quiet.”

Jane’s treatment began with a lumpectomy, and later a mastectomy, but also underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy. But Jane reacted very badly to the chemotherapy, which made her extremely ill. She required more medical attention, including out-of-hours doctors and anti-sickness injections.

Healthy Matters Programme. Her treatments lasted for almost a year, and now her family are drawing a line under everything that’s happened, and are moving on.

Simon and Tim, their youngest son, will be taking part in the Cambridge to Norwich Bike Ride on 28 September and raising money for Big C. Simon, a self-declared MAMIL (Middle Aged Man In Lycra) is excited by the 80-mile distance after finding a love for cycling. Tim will be taking part two days after completing the Newbury to London Bike Ride, also for Big C. The family has already raised over £1,300 for the charity, whilst Jane was going through her treatment.

Jane and Simon used Big C Centres to sit and relax while she was in hospital, and to have their questions answered using the

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

I have been manning the phone while Stephanie has taken a well earned holiday and, yes, we have been inundated with yet more kittens. Two were found in Dilham in different places and several days apart but were obviously brother and sister. As we believe a further two were taken to another charity we think all four were abandoned. On the same day they came into care, three were left in a cardboard box on Irene’s doorstep. Fortunately, they were found by her husband returning to the house that evening, otherwise they may not have been found until the following morning. Three more are now being hand reared by Kelly while the two youngest are also being bottled fed by yet another of our fosterers, Lesley. One of these, however, required immediate veterinary treatment (thank you Luke at Westover). Although all our available spaces are taken we know of more cats needing to come into care once a pen becomes free. Although not all the kittens are old enough to leave our care, several are now ready and waiting to be adopted. In the early years of the branch, we were approached by one of the companies at the Bacton Gas Site as they had a feral colony there. With

West Norfolk RSPCA

Ralph is a truly lovely boy and is a great favourite amongst everyone at the Centre. He is approximately six years old, is a Labrador cross and appears to be about 95% Lab!

Poor Ralph came to us from another RSPCA Centre and, after a while spent with us (for absolutely no good reason), I did find him a lovely home, with a single lady who absolutely adored him. She wrote to me about him, shortly after adopting him, saying how much she loved him and "I even love the smell of him". I thought that was lovely, and she was so proud of him, it was fantastic to hear. She sent us a photograph of him all settled in, looking so amazing and I wouldn't have recognised him. He was being such a good boy, and was loving his new home and especially being with his new Mum.

Tragically though it was not to last as his poor Mum suddenly became very seriously ill and was admitted to hospital. Why does life have to be so cruel, to split him and his Mum up.....I could cry for them both. Poor Ralph was transported back to us, from Hertfordshire, and I imagine he couldn't believe it when he found himself back behind a kennel door. We had a wonderful time in the enclosure with Ralph when I originally took his photographs, we had a lovely fuss with him and, at one point, when she stopped stroking him, he was giving her his paw, asking her to stroke him again, which was fantastic to see. It was great to see how relaxed he was with us and we could have stayed there with him all afternoon.

Ralph is a very friendly, loving boy and is very easy-going. He is a nice-sized dog (about Pointer-sized) and walks well on the lead. He

the help of the staff, the adult cats were all neutered and the kittens came to us for rehoming. Over the years we have supported the cats when they have required veterinary treatment and the company has supported us in return in their annual charity awards. With five cats still living on site, the staff, who have looked after them over the years, were concerned because they would shortly be leaving the site and the building where the cats sheltered was being demolished. Once again Cotton Tail, one of the they approached us for help and Kelly and kittens being hand Lesley, (the two fosterers mentioned above), reared by Kelly have now found a space for them in their stables. This has been just in time, as the last building was due to be demolished as the last cat was caught, and one of their main carers retired. It is a happy outcome for all the cats concerned. If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/ northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). knows 'sit' and is very treat-orientated which always helps! He will need two nice walks a day please, either in the countryside or at the beach, and a secure, enclosed garden to enjoy with you please. HE IS HOUSETRAINED.

Ralph has been neutered, vaccinated and microchipped and can be rehomed outside of the county, within reason, and subject to a successful home check. Ralph will no doubt love a new home with you all to himself so would prefer to be the only pet. He could live with children aged 10+.

Ralph is a wonderful companion, please give him another chance of a loving, forever home where he will pay you back with love in abundance.

Back to School with Animal Magic Dog Club

Each season presents a different set of challenges to the dog owner. Many of us have battled to keep our dogs comfortable through the hot summer months by walking in the cooler mornings and evenings or splashing around in a paddling pool. Now that autumn is around the corner there are some new dangers to be aware of.

When I think of returning to school as a child after the long summer holidays I always think of conkers, they’d be falling from the giant Horse Chestnut trees in abundance.

But did you know that conkers are poisonous to dogs?

Another autumnal danger is the acorn, both are toxic, if swallowed whole could cause a blockage and if chewed their toxins could make your dog very ill indeed.

Dogs are naturally curious creatures and can be stimulated by the falling of conkers and acorns - if your dog is a scavenger it’s a good idea to avoid places where they could find these hidden amongst the fallen leaves. If you are concerned about your dog’s health at any time always seek advice from your vet swiftly.

Autumn does bring some advantages too, bright but cooler days are perfect for getting out and enjoying a walk with your four legged friend. Animal Magic Dog Club based near North Walsham goes back to school for the autumn term in October, offering a wide range of training for puppies, junior and adult dogs. The eight free workshops begin on 1 October 2014 and aim to empower families and carers to support change and recovery through improved understanding of eating disorders. Practical skills for dealing with difficult situations are also central to the programme.

This announcement comes as the Government has promised a mental health task force to improve the delivery of services for young people, highlighting the need for effective care in the community. Beat understands that parents and families are part of the solution and can play a significant role in the recovery of children, young people and adults. The workshops seek to empower parents, partners and siblings of people of all ages affected by an eating disorder to support them in the community, preventing the need for inpatient care. “Eating disorders are complex mental illnesses, but the majority of people affected make a full recovery,” said Louise Dunne, Volunteering Co-ordinator for Beat. “Support from family members can really help – but no-one can expect to understand eating disorders, how best to act or what to say without the right information and guidance.

Eating disorders can cause drastic changes in behaviour which can be very distressing for the person affected and their families. In Norfolk, our Collaborative Care Skills Workshops have helped families to feel more confident in dealing with difficult situations and providing appropriate support.”

Previous attendees have praised the workshops and the significance of the skills they learned. One local mother said of her son’s recovery: “Looking back to this time last year we can hardly believe that it’s possible he’s come so far in such a short space of time. Now he is in a healthy weight range, has a normal relationship with food again and is coping very well with what life throws at him. As a family we have all learned so much over the last year and I’m convinced that his recovery would have taken much longer without the very valuable lessons we learned at the workshops.” Beat runs a number of dedicated services in Norfolk including a helpline 0300 300 0115, email service norfolkhelpmail@b-eat.co.uk,

free training for healthcare professionals, self help and support groups for eating disorder sufferers and carers and self help and support groups for those with emotional overeating.

Church members spent time engaging with the young workers, boiling kettles and providing cakes. We found it a worthwhile experience and the young men seemed very happy to have people having normal conversations with them. They will return in October and the intention is to ask them to clear the Hazel Grove. The church mowers are still in dock, one is likely beyond repair and will need re-placing but the scything machine will enable us to keep on top of the churchyard for the rest of the year. Offers of help with the routine mowing are already forth-coming although it is a case of many hands make light work, so further publicity to extend the volunteer base will take place in the near future.

Meanwhile, volunteers have worked on the borders around the church and the seat has been painted. The borders look rather bare because some of the lavenders had to be removed because of old age but replanting is on the agenda. Meanwhile the need is for volunteers, a posse of churchyard gnomes, to complement the current workers. Plans are afoot to paint gates, trim back over-grown hollies and buddleia and cut back the ivy on the walls. Contact info@thorpemarket.org.uk or 01263 833252.

The churchyard is now well on its way to being restored to its former award winning glory. A regular schedule of services at 10am on the first and third Sundays of each month is now in place.

Gresham’s appoints Patrick Hawes as Composer-in-Residence

Patrick Hawes is an English composer who has worked with the country’s finest musicians. He topped the Classical Charts with his album Angel, has composed the Highgrove Suite for the Prince of Wales, and from July 2014 became Gresham’s Composer-in-Residence.

Patrick first visited Gresham’s as an Associated Board Examiner in the 1990s and was immediately taken with the musical excellence at the school as well as being a former adjudicator at the Senior School’s annual House Music Competition where he says the atmosphere was “electric.”

Patrick will join Gresham’s School in Holt as Composer-in-Residence from July until December 2014. His first task will be to write a new advent carol for the Prep School choir and organ and share in the composition process with pupils at the Prep School – which he hopes will inspire pupils to write their own music! Patrick will also work with GCSE and A level composers at the Senior School.

In addition, participants of this year’s

Cromer RNLI Lifeboat Day 2014

International Britten Music course, an annual summer residential music camp held at Gresham’s Prep, had the unique opportunity of performing a specially commissioned piece of work written by Patrick to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. Eventide: In Memoriam Edith Cavell was premiered in Norwich Cathedral on 12 July alongside the English Chamber Orchestra, Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society and soprano Elin Manahan Thomas. This performance will also be repeated with the Prep School Chapel Choir, the English Chamber Orchestra and soprano Rosamund Walton, on November 8th in St Peter’s Church, Sheringham.

Patrick said, "Gresham's has a great musical tradition and it is an honour and a joy

to become a small part of that. I am very much looking forward to working with Gresham's musicians and to writing a new Christmas carol Patrick Hawes for the school. My hope is that I can encourage and inspire pupils to fulfil their true creative potential."

Exciting times ahead for Skate Park Campaign The Cromer Skate Park campaign has reached its fundraising target of £150,000.

The campaign, which has been working for some years towards providing a skate park for the young people of Cromer, has in the past few days issued a purchase order to Maverick, the specialist skate park development company that won the tender. It is anticipated that construction of the skate park according to the winning design should commence within the next two or three months. The campaign has managed to clear the final hurdle thanks to an impressive £9,000 donation in early September from the J Davy Foundation, which supports registered charities working in many different fields including medical research, disability, the elderly, children, the disadvantaged, and the welfare of ex-servicemen. ‘We are of course thrilled to have received this very generous sum from the J Davy Foundation,’ says Committee member Jean Spruce, who was instrumental in obtaining the donation. ‘At long last, we have reached our fundraising target, so it’s full speed ahead with the development of the skate park.’

Sebastian Gasse, vice chair of the Cromer Skate Park campaign, is keen for the triumph to be seen less as a sprint finish, and more as the culmination of a marathon. ‘This success is the result of years of sustained effort, during which the committee has seen many changes of personnel. I believe it is important at this point to remember the efforts of our many past members, including Andrew Harrison-Robertshaw, Penny Gee and Ed Land, without whose efforts we would certainly not

have been able to announce our victory today.’ Similarly, says Mr Gasse, it is necessary to extend thanks to all the individuals and businesses, both large and small, within Cromer and beyond, who have supported the campaign throughout its existence. The suggestion that support for the campaign remains both strong and diverse is reinforced by other recent contributions, including: • £500 from Budgen of Cromer, via their ongoing sale of second-hand books (see photo);

• £356 collected by the Kings Head pub in Cromer; • More than £300 from Cromer Farm shop, representing 1% of their sales during the month of August, plus £140 from a collection tin on their counter; • £150 from the Cromer Methodist church ‘Outlook’ Ladies’ group; • £85 from a Cromer Skate Park tombola held during Cromer Carnival Week; and • Over £50 from a collection tin on the counter in ‘Wet Dog’ surf shop.

Now that the target figure has been reached, there are a number of pledges for support that become due. These include £50,000 from Sport England, £20,000 from Cromer Town Council, and £10,000 from the Big Society Fund via North Norfolk District Council. ‘The young people of Cromer have

been great champions and supporters of the campaign,’ says Mr Gasse, ‘Not least in respect of their patience. Getting all the funds in promptly will help us to make the skate park available to them as soon as possible.’ Despite this major breakthrough, Mr Gasse is keen to make it clear that the work of the committee is by no means finished. ‘The initial fundraising is over, and of course this is a huge triumph. Nevertheless, we need to maintain a strong committee into the future, to ensure that the installation of the skate park and its operation thereafter are as successful as possible, and to continue raising funds in order to meet running costs.’ In the near future, the committee will need to address a number of issues, including: • Ongoing costs with respect to the lease of the site, and maintenance of the installation; • Insurance; • Signage, benches and pathways from the adjacent children’s playground; and • Training young people to act as skate park rangers. With this in mind, the committee is eager to get some new blood on board. The campaign’s Annual General Meeting will take place on Monday 29th September at ‘The Cottage’ on Louden Road, starting at 6:00pm. Those who are interested in getting involved are not simply invited to the AGM, but positively encouraged to attend.

Mr Gasse explains: ‘This is a very exciting time for the town, and an opportunity for those who have perhaps supported the campaign from a distance to play a larger role. As another chapter begins in the life of the skate park, it is only right that we recruit some new members, with their own ideas and perspectives, who can help take things forward into the future.’

The committee thanks all those individuals and organisations who have supported and continue to support the campaign, and invites them to the AGM on 29th September. Those who cannot make it but would like to be involved may contact the committee via any of the following: Website: FaceBook: Twitter: Telephone:

Crab & Lobster Festival’s Auction a grand success!

The 2014 Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival came to a close on Sunday 24 August with a Grand Auction of Bootiful Boats and World Pier Crabbing Championships in Cromer.

The decorated boats lined the slopes leading down to the pier, local food and craft stalls lined the promenade and lines were set ready for a fun-filled, action-packed day of competitive crabbing and bidding. The sunny bank holiday Sunday saw thousands of people visiting the town to take part in the festivities.

Under the hammer of renowned auctioneer Martyn Fox, the 70 boats sold in just over 50 minutes to raise over £4,100 which will be distributed to local charities via the Festival’s Community Grant scheme.

The boats were part of the Festival’s art trail which ran from Easter, over the Festival

Festival chairman Tony Shipp said “seeing all 70 boats on show together for the first time was spectacular along the pier forecourt, we are extremely pleased with the support the auction received and the amount raised for the Festival’s charities”

Norman Lamb speaks out for social justice for coastal communities

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb met last month with Ostend residents and local Liberal Democrat councillors Lee Walker and Eric Seward to discuss the findings of a report by engineers Mott MacDonald into defence of the coastline at Ostend.

The report, which was commissioned by North Norfolk District Council after pressure from Norman Lamb and local councillors following coastal damage in the tidal surge last year, recommended a number of options for defending the coast at Ostend.

Norman Lamb will now write to the Environment Secretary asking if she will meet with a delegation from North Norfolk, including local residents and NNDC, to discuss the threat to homes at Ostend.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said “We have to fight for social justice for coastal communities. Scientists have predicted that as a result of global climate change, severe weather events like the coastal surge in December last year could become much more frequent. It is essential that those who live on the front line are not left to face the consequences alone, and I am determined to stand up for fair treatment for those living on our coastline.”

Coastal Path plan is a step in the right direction - Norman Lamb

A plan to speed up the construction of a public path hugging the UK coastline will provide a huge boost in North Norfolk, Norman Lamb has said. Now open within the grounds of Groveland Farm

We also run workshops and classes to suit all abilities in quilting and

It is hoped a path will allow walkers to trek around the entire coastline polymer clay, of Englandpatchwork, and make a difference to towns and jewellery villages alongmaking the route. and all mediums of art. Norman Lamb said “Extending the North Norfolk Coastal Path to cover the whole of North Norfolk’s coastline will open up some of our most beautiful countryside to walkers, providing a real boost to the local economy as well as helping local people stay active and healthy. Even more people will get to see this part of the world in its full glory. I will be keeping close tabs on the progress to ensure building work hits deadline. I am aware from experience in North Norfolk that there have been some disputes over the route of the path. It's critically important that people's concerns are respected as we set about completing the process of establishing the path around our coastline.”

Nick Clegg unveiled the plans at the RSPB’s State of Nature conference and said it was time to push to finish the project.

He added “At the current rate of progress, we will have built the UK’s first space port before our coastal path is completed. You’ll be able to fly in space before you can walk around our coast. I’ve been pushing for this process to be speeded up. It hasn’t been easy, but I’m pleased to announce we will ensure the path is completed by 2020 by allocating extra funding.”

Norman Lamb and Cllr Marie Strong meet minister to discuss Blakeney MCZ

North Norfolk MP and Wells Division County Councillor Dr Marie Strong yesterday met with Environment Minister George Eustice MP to discuss controversial proposals to “zone off” an area of Blakeney Saltmarsh.

After the proposals were first announced in 2011 by Natural England, Norman and Marie campaigned to force a rethink, and the proposals for Blakeney were stalled.

However, there has never been clear confirmation that the proposals would not be revisited at a later stage, and when a new Environment Minister was appointed last year Norman Lamb and Marie Strong were determined to make sure that he understood the strength of feeling locally about the proposals. Last year they organised an email campaign giving individuals the chance to have their say directly to the minister, which was supported by 1177 people from Blakeney and across the world.

At yesterday’s meeting, Dr Strong described to the minister the significant problems with the proposals, which had failed to take into account a public right of

Norman Lamb (full hour) emphasised the fact TAKE THE STRESS OUT OF DRIVING that Blakeney Saltmarshes were NO CLUTCH, NO GEARS, NO WORRIES already subject to six levels of statutory protection, had been assessed as being in Text or call Warren on a “favourable” condition, and were 07860 7666 05 managed well by the National Trust in flawed proposals developed by Netgain for a close co-operation with the local community. Cllr Dr Marie Strong commented afterwards, “I was satisfied that we were able to meet with the minister and that he allowed me to tell him why using Blakeney Marsh as a Reference Area was unnecessary and untenable. He listened to our case, and we were able to ensure that he understood the issues fully.”

Norman Lamb MP commented, “Local residents are overwhelmingly opposed to the

Members’ and Shareholders’ Day at North Norfolk Railway

Full details have been announced for the North Norfolk Railway’s fifth annual Members' and Shareholders’ Day, which will take place on Saturday 4 October.

Members' Day is our way of saying thank you to all 3000 members of the M&GN Joint Railway Society and all NNR shareholders, with free travel all day to supporters.

A special intensive timetable will be in place for the day, which will see as many Society engines and items of rolling stock in service as possible. B12 8572 and Class 31 D5631 will be in traffic, as will our Quad-Art Set No.74. Wissington, which will be visiting from the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway, is due to haul the Vintage Set.

The focus of the day will be on working to top up the remainder of the Y14:2014 Appeal, which currently stands 30% short of the target. We must raise these funds in order to steam our J15/Y14, on which much work has already taken place for the most full and comprehensive overhaul the engine has ever received since being built.

The Society shop at Weybourne will be open, as will be the Muddle and Go Nowhere Real Ale Bar Car. We hope to also offer visitors shed tours of the rapidly expanding Weybourne works, subject to ongoing construction works being in a safe condition.

We encourage visitors to join the M&GN Joint Railway J15 7564 hauling the Vintage Train Society on the day, to obtain for the 2013 Members’ Day free travel and to enjoy the benefits of membership, which include quarter-rate fares on normal service days and our quarterly magazine Joint Line.

The Bayly School was the first reflexology teaching body to be established in the UK and is the official teaching body of the British Reflexology Association. Financial Advisors: Who to trust? Written by Helen Batten – Solicitor at Hayes + Storr

At Hayes + Storr, we are increasingly being contacted by clients for legal advice in relation to loss of confidence in their financial advisors. You may wish to engage a solicitor to assist you in bringing your complaint to the attention of the FCA. The first step is to put your complaint in writing to the financial advisor concerned and ask for the matter to be investigated and for a written response. The financial advisor will have a maximum time period of eight weeks to respond. If not response is received or you are unhappy with the response, you can then contact the Financial Ombudsman Service

(FOS) for investigate the complaint on your behalf.

A complaint to the FOS is a free and independent service that aims to resolve disputes between clients and their financial advisors, but it is not suitable for every case. If you and your solicitor decide to make a complaint, the FOS will consider its content and ask the financial advisor for their version of events before making a decision. However, you should be aware that the parties do not have to accept the decision made by the FOS. Depending on the circumstances of the complaint, it may be more appropriate to make a civil claim in the County Court to recover your losses.

Negligence Claims in the County Court A claim to the County Court is likely to be made on the basis of a financial advisor negligently advising a client to make an unsuitable investment, which has caused loss. The Court will consider whether the advice given by the financial advisor was negligent based on a strict legal test. The Court will want to ensure that the loss caused to the client was directly attributable to the poor advice given. The Court, with assistance from experts, will then calculate the value of the loss suffered. The aim is to put the client back in the situation they would have been in had the poor advice not been given.

The solicitors at Hayes + Storr are available to provide advice on the conduct of financial advisors and where their advice may give rise to either a complaint or a County Court claim. Discussing the matter with our legal professionals often assists in clarifying your concerns and working out a plan of action going forward.

The Conservation Volunteers spearhead the last year of The Big Tree Plant

Free trees are being offered to communities across Norfolk and Suffolk to create new woodlands this winter.

The trees have been provided by the Government as part of Defra’s ‘The Big Tree Plant’ campaign which ends this winter. It brings together local communities and national organisations to get more people involved in planting and caring for trees.

Mark Webster, Health Projects Officer for The Conservation Volunteers, who are supporting the scheme locally, said: “A properly managed wood can provide a great habitat and food supply for birds, mammals and insects and we’re delighted to be able to offer trees, stakes and guards free to communities in Norfolk and Suffolk. These planting schemes will have enormous benefits for the people taking part as well as the local area”.

People or organisations wishing to apply for free trees should contact Mark via m.webster@tcv.org.uk or 01603 767 300. An attractive and substantial period property formerly the station house to Cromer railway .

Swap an armchair for a donor chair this October

As the first signs of autumn appear, many people swap outdoor picnics and day trips for meals at home and indoor gatherings. NHS Blood and Transplant is urging people in Anglia to get out in the cooler weather and get cosy at a local blood donor session.

Although overall blood use within the NHS has reduced thanks to improvements in clinical and surgical practices, hospitals and patients still rely on more than 7,000 people attending a donation session every day across England and North Wales.

It is important that vital blood stocks are maintained at all times, as red blood cells have a shelf life of just 35 days and platelets a shelf life of only seven days. NHS Blood and Transplant needs to collect blood of each blood group in the right quantities to meet patient needs and regular donors are crucial

in enabling us to do so.

John Canning, Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHS Blood and Transplant, said “We are asking blood donors in Anglia to make an appointment to donate blood to keep stocks healthy throughout the autumn months. The whole process of donating only takes an hour or so and you will be helping to ensure that patients get the blood they need.

Whether you’ve donated before or are thinking about donating for the first time, please book an appointment to give blood and save lives. You never know whose life you could save.”

Blood is required to treat patients for a whole range of reasons. It is used in accidents and emergency situations, during surgery and in maternity and neonatal care when either mum or baby need blood. It is also used as

Tickets Selling Fast for Sheringham Remembrance Concert with English Chamber Orchestra to commemorate Centenary of First World War

Tickets are selling fast for the First World War Centenary Concert on Saturday 8 November in St Peter’s Church Sheringham. Thanks to the generous support of North Norfolk District Council and Orchestras Live we are able to bring the world-renowned English Chamber Orchestra to north Norfolk to perform alongside Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society and Gresham’s Prep School Choir together with the popular Norfolkbased soprano, Rosamund Walton and bass Tom Stoddart.

This performance will include the local premiere of Patrick Hawes’ Eventide (In Memoriam Edith Cavell) which received its world premiere in Norwich Cathedral in July to wide acclaim being described in the EDP as an “ambitious and moving tribute to Edith Cavell - large choral and orchestral forces vigorously played their part in conveying strong emotions…”

The work has been especially commissioned by Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society from internationally acclaimed composer Patrick Hawes to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War and celebrates the life, faith and courage of Norfolk’s WW1 heroine, nurse Edith

Harvest Festival at Felbrigg Hall Summer is over and now is the time to celebrate the harvest and nowhere does this more spectacularly than Felbrigg Hall which is transformed by the floral arrangements in all the main rooms and the kitchen filled to overflowing with the bounty from the walled garden. The display this year promises to be spectacular because of the favourable weather conditions throughout the spring and summer.

Harvest weekend this year will be between Saturday 4th October and Wednesday 8th with the house open between 11am and 5pm with last admissions at 4.30pm. Normal admission charges apply although if you are a National Trust member admission is free. Even for those who have visited Felbrigg on earlier occasions a repeat visit is worthwhile on harvest weekend as you will not be disappointed by the experience.

Depending on the time you have available and the prevailing weather conditions it is also worth visiting the walled garden, the source of the exhibits, to see for yourself one of the finest NT walled gardens in the country, managed by a small team of full-time gardeners and volunteers. The volunteer room guides will be only too happy to welcome you in the house itself and help you to have a memorable day out and don’t

the foresight of Felbrigg volunteer David Musson who set it up in 1996. Its continued existence depends on donations of good quality books. We are always striving to increase our visitor numbers and so far this year the team of NT permanent staff and our enthusiastic volunteers have helped over 87,000 visitors enjoy the delights of Felbrigg.

Harvest weekend is an ideal opportunity to increase our visitor numbers. Please don’t forget that if you are local we always want to attract new volunteers so if you are interested please ring Felbrigg on 01263 837444.

We have lots of second hand books in store which we would like to sell so that we can refresh the bookshop more regularly and make room for new donations. There will be thousands of books on dozens of subjects at bargain prices. Last year the bookshop made £17,000 which went towards conservation of the house and the estate. The bookshop is run by a team of just over 20 volunteers and would not exist but for

Norman Lamb plans sponsored cycle ride to raise money for local health charities

North Norfolk MP and Care Minister Norman Lamb is planning a 100-mile sponsored cycle ride around the boundary of his North Norfolk constituency, to raise money for a range of local health charities.

The cycle ride will be carried out over two days, on 23 and 24 September, starting and finishing in North Walsham. Norman is aiming to visit each of the local charities he is supporting during the cycle ride. Norman is also encouraging people who support his cycle ride to complete his survey on their priorities for better health and care services to help him campaign for improved healthcare in North Norfolk.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said “One of my highest priorities as Member of Parliament for North Norfolk has been campaigning for better health and care services in our area. Here in North Norfolk, we are lucky to have some fantastic local hospitals in North Walsham, Cromer, Holt, and Wells – all of which have active “Friends” charities run by local volunteers who raise money to help improve the care and services they can offer. I am also particularly supportive of the work done by Break Charity in Sheringham supporting children with learning disabilities, and the national mental health charity MIND. I am really pleased to have this opportunity to support such a great set of causes, and the
