Skydive for Myeloma

Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent

On Saturday 13 September Ross Browne successfully skydived from 13,00ft at Hinton Airfield in Northamptonshire to raise money for Myeloma UK.

Ross’ dad Stephen takes up the story ‘We left Norwich at 4.30am to arrive at airfield for 8am. After completing paperwork and short briefing they were in the air for 9am. The plane climbed to 13,000ft when Ross, securely strapped to his instructor, left the plane.

Falling at around 120 mph they dropped to 6,000ft when the chute was deployed giving plenty of time to enjoy the thrill. The landing was gently and graceful and with a massive smile of his face!

The Skydive was professionally videoed and can be viewed on the internet on “YouTube” under the heading “Ross’s Myeloma Charity Skydive” or for the next few weeks. Photographs and the video can be seen at the Coffee 2 Go stall on Cromer Market on Fridays. Anyone interested in viewing them are most welcome.

The Coffee Morning held by Coffee 2 Go in August and Ross’s Skydive Sponsorship has raised over £450 and that figure is expected to rise over the next few weeks. May we thank everyone who has supported our fundraising event. NEW COMPETITION Your donations are much appreciated’.

Singer-Songwriter’s Epic UK Tour... in a Milk Float! North-Norfolk singer-songwriter Paul Thompson is planning a unique musical tour in 2015 to promote the release of his forthcoming CD ‘Lost in the Land of Midnight Sun’.

Starting from his home near Sheringham, Paul will be travelling in a specially converted milk float almost 2,000 miles around Britain during summer 2015, and the proceeds of the tour will be used to set up a community music project.

Performing at music festivals, centres for green technology, traditional music venues and ‘off-grid’ locations such as National Trust Parks, Paul will be travelling 30-50 miles per day with a whopping top speed of 15 mph. The specially converted milk float will double up as tour bus and performance space, with solar panels powering stage lighting and music gear.

Paul is hoping to raise the necessary funds for the milk float conversion by Christmas, and

has started a Crowdfunding campaign from his website. Fans can get involved in a number of ways, including joining the tour for a day or organising their own House Concert, and there is also an advertising opportunity for local businesses to put their name and logo on the milk float. After doing some research, Paul found a company in Oxfordshire who specialise in converting milk floats for the TV and film industry, and who will be doing the conversion ready for the tour. Paul will be keeping a blog and video diary, doing live radio phone-ins, and is also hoping to appear on the Channel 4 TV series George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces. Further information about the tour and Crowdfunding campaign can be found at Paul’s website, www.paulsmusic.co.uk.

“I had the idea for the tour after watching an episode of Father Ted,” says Paul. “I wanted to think of an original idea to promote my new CD, and also find a way of touring that was environmentally sound. There’s a really funny episode of Father Ted with a milk float in, and I just started wondering how far you could

Weather with Ned Nimbus

Time to look ahead to the end of the year. The past three months came out as forecast with August taking the booby prize with a fair amount of unsettled weather following an early stirring up by ex hurricane 'Bertha'. October should give us another fine month overall very much in line with predictions made five to six months ago . These forecast are initially put together at that time out and firmed up, if necessary, closer to publication.

November will give us more a mix of weather but still, overall, a bias in favour of fair conditions and average or above average temperatures. December is likely to continue in the same vein but high pressure to the north and slipping slowly to the west of us will bring in winds from the north or north-west, eventually more unsettled weather will gain the upper hand. An initial look into the start of 2015 indicates an early reminder we are in the middle of winter and a drop of temperature, lasting for some time is a distinct probability.

Cromer Times 455 October 11th 2014

‘It was absolutely the best time ever’ this was the reaction from lady Dannatt after her visit to Cromer RNli on Sunday 28 September.

In her role as High Sheriff of Norfolk, Lady Dannatt has experienced many different activities. This visit, with her husband and family, to Cromer RNLI’s station, combined with a trip on the all weather boat Lester, gave ‘enormous joy’ to the couple.

recovery, the High Sheriff and her husband were able to see a different view of the North Norfolk Coast that is usually only seen by fishermen and sailors.

Lady Dannatt remarked that she had been delighted to meet not only the crew who were on the Cromer RNLI boat, but also some of those who fulfil the essential background roles such as the launcher and winchman.

Whilst the Dannatt family watched the launch and later the

Overstrand - The Strand Club

The main business of this afternoon was to ask members if they would prefer our January New Year lunch to be held within Overstrand or a little further afield and given that it was carried by a noticeable majority in favour of further afield, we now have a much wider choice of venue. We were told a little about the content of James Begley's talk in October which is entitled "Message in a Bottle". Glo said that often when an ambulance is called the patient is unconscious and certain vital details cannot be ascertained, such as any medication he/she may be taking.

Birthday cards were delivered and tea hostesses selected. We welcomed the return of Jane after the death of her husband and the first visit of a new member, Carol, who hopefully liked us and will come again.

She observed how all those associated with the RNLI had a passion for the sea and also demonstrated the professionalism of their training.

After the visit an informal meeting with other members of Cromer RNLI concluded with Lady Dannatt saying, ‘Today has been the best of this year’s experiences and I have had the most wonderful time. Thank you to the RNLI in Cromer for making this possible.

Everyone thoroughly the cream tea, which consisted of gorgeous scones made by Josie, clotted cream and homemade strawberry jam. Chris then organised a categories game in which she went through the alphabet asking members to name, for instance, breeds of dog beginning with A, the names of towns in the UK beginning with C, anything at all beginning with X, who lives at Sandringham beginning with Q! It proved to be a riotous game and although there were no prizes everyone seemed to enjoy it.

Visitors are welcome at our meetings and the afternoon only costs £1.50 which includes a raffle ticket, tea or coffee and biscuits.

1940s Weekend

The ever popular Links Country Park Hotel in West Runton was host to another successful 1940s-themed evening on Saturday 20th September.

The group known as Groovy Gazza Productions preformed their act a Salute to the 1940s, packed full of songs and variety of a bygone era.

The show itself features a very talented company of six professional entertainers. Each established in their own field. Tributes are paid to Vera Lynn, George Formby, Gracie fields, Al Jolson and the Andrews Sisters.

The evening consisted of a three-course 1940s-styled menu with a modern day twist, colourfully decorated tables complete with union jack hand waving flags. The Runton Suite was decorated with bunting, sandbags and Spitfires hanging from the ceiling the whole evening was a wonderful tribute to the 40s and very heart warning it makes you proud to be British.

CROMER FLOWER CLUB

Our September meeting saw Adele Kent demonstrate ‘take an old bag shopping’, interpretation of her title being memories of things we did and bought which evoked thoughts of bygone years. Her flowers were wonderful with interesting containers, a favourite containing Calla lilies, the rose ‘Memory Lane’ and clematis being much admired as a prize in the raffle. Adele judged our competition entitled ‘Gift Wrapped’ with Lynne Tester being best in show. Our next meeting is on Monday 20 October at 7.30pm at Cromer Junior School with demonstrator Linda Harman presenting ‘the crafty flower arranger’. Entry in October is free to visitors. There will be a sales table and refreshments.

Council to host evening for prospective councillors

Do you want to make a difference in your community but are unsure how to go about it? Are there things that you would like to achieve or problems you would like to sort out for the sake of your local area? North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is hosting a free event on Wednesday 15 October, 6.30pm – 8pm at its Holt Road offices in Cromer for anyone interested in becoming a candidate and who would like to find out more about what being a councillor involves. Prospective candidates are being encouraged to attend the event to learn about how the council works and will have the chance to chat to serving District Councillors who will be able to offer an insight into the role of a local councillor and what it is like to represent a local community. The next elections for all 48 seats (representing 34 wards) on North Norfolk District Council will take place on Thursday 7 May 2015. If you would like to attend this event or would like further information, please contact Emma Denny on 01263 516010 or email emma.denny@north-norfolk.gov.uk

COAST Coming Soon

Known locally as COAST, the Cromer and Sheringham Art and Literary Festival is coming soon in autumn half term. The festival kicks off on 24th October with an evening featuring acclaimed blues musician Ron Sayer at the White Horse in Overstrand, followed by an exceptional week of exhibitions, music, poetry, dancing and fun on the theme of 'War and Peace'. Highlights of this year’s festival are an exhibition of photographs from Sir Michael Savory's personal archive at Muckleburgh, two special afternoons of poetry at Cromer’s Virginia Court Hotel, a war-time sing along at Sheringham Little Theatre Hub, creative writing and filmmaking workshops, a musical afternoon with the Honeybirds at the Sea Marge Hotel in Overstrand and a family circus event in Cromer Community Hall. Sally Wallace, Chair of COAST says “This year, building on the successes of the last 4 years, we are holding two exciting competitions to encourage creativity amongst our communities. Entries in the short film competition will be shown at a special screening, with tapas, on 28th at Sheringham Little Theatre. New look for NHS patient transport service

the NHS patient transport service for Norfolk (excluding great yarmouth) has undergone a new look. the telephone access number has also changed.

From 1 October the service will be provided by ERS Medical. ERS Medical is a major force in providing non-emergency ambulance services to the NHS across the country.

ERS Medical is already a familiar name in the area as its courier division has been operating around Norfolk since July 2012. Its fleet of courier vehicles service the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals and Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King’s Lynn as well as GP surgeries, dentists and podiatrists in the region.

ERS Medical was awarded the 5-year contract to provide the service across all of Norfolk, excluding Great Yarmouth and Waveney, by the NHS Clinical Commissioning Groups for Norwich, South Norfolk, West Norfolk and North Norfolk.

The service carries patients who are registered with a GP Practice in Norwich, South, West or North Norfolk, who have a medical need and who are unable to travel without assistance. About 115,000 patient journeys were undertaken in 2013/14.

Cromer WI

For patients there will be no change in service. If eligible, patients will still be taken to their appointment via patient transport vehicles. And regular patients will recognise familiar faces because many of the staff have transferred to ERS Medical.

The telephone number to book journeys has changed. Patients who believe they may be eligible and who need to make a booking will now call 0333 240 4100.

Mark Taylor, Chief Executive Officer North Norfolk CCG said “We are pleased to have re-procured a contract to run this service in compliance with public sector legislation. There were a number of bidders but ERS Medical was chosen because of the quality of the service offered and importantly, the value for taxpayers’ money.

“It will be good to work with ERS Medical and we have confidence that together we will continue an excellent and valued NHS service to our patients.”

Chief Brendan Fatchett, Managing Director for ERS Medical, said “We are delighted to expand our offering in Norfolk and build on the existing services we’ve been delivering to the area for a number of years. We look

Everyone was welcomed back after the summer break. Our speaker for September was Mrs Rosalind Teague and it was entitled “Teaching in Prison and After”. We heard how she started out as an infant school teacher and after being disillusioned with teaching began volunteering as a prison visitor in a detention centre and the probation service. However her teaching abilities soon came to the fore and she ended up as a volunteer teacher and later a paid teacher in the prison service. She started out at Winchester jail and ended up at Norwich teaching literacy, maths and then art and crafts. We were told many stories of her dealings with the prisoners, some made you laugh, some made you think. She is now involved with the Circle of Support for ex offenders at Norwich who need help in the community.

We had a report on our visit to Sandringham which everyone enjoyed and on our participation in the Cromer Carnival. To celebrate the WI Centenary year 2015 we are starting with a baton trail around Norfolk, using public transport and some of our members will be going either on the bus or to our Federation House in Norwich and a book will be signed by all members taking part. Arrangements were made for our Soup and Puds event at the end of the month. The craft team will be meeting to arrange our Christmas displays in the main church. The competition of

forward to continuing to work with the Norfolk community and delivering a service which is focussed on patient care.”

ERS Medical is also working with Voluntary Norfolk to bring the ‘Car Link’ Volunteer Drivers’ Scheme back into operation. The Scheme will recruit and train volunteer drivers to transport patients and clients to health, social care and wellbeing appointments. Additionally, its national apprenticeship scheme, in partnership with YMCA Training, will see ERS Medical offering career opportunities locally to candidates aged 18 to 24. The scheme presents an opportunity to work within the healthcare sector on either a one or two-year fixed term contract while gaining Level 2 and 3 NVQ qualifications. THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER CONKERS

Do children still play conkers? Or is the game a victim of Health and Safety worries? It would be sad if children have stopped as conkers has a long history. The first mention of the game is in 1821 when snail shells or hazelnuts were used but from the 1850s horse chestnuts became fashionable. Conkers were also known as obblyonkers, cheggies or cheesers.

This is the ideal time of the year for children to plant tree seeds to learn all about growing and the link between seeds and trees. So take your children for a walk in the park or the countryside to collect some seeds such as conkers or acorns. Check the seeds do not have any holes in them – if they do it may mean that insect larvae are inside eating them.

Place some crocks at the base of a pot, then nearly fill it with compost. Ask your children to plant their seed about 2cm (0.8in) deep, then cover it over with compost and water it well. The pots can then be placed in a shady place in the garden for the winter. Make sure that the children check them from time to time to make sure the pots do not dry out. Explain how it will be necessary to wait until spring to see if their seed has sprouted. The plant should be repotted as it grows. It is worth planting several seeds just in case some don’t germinate.

Reflexology

Kevin Keeler MBRA qualified with the Bayly School of Reflexology in 1989 and has held a relexology practice in Cromer for 25 years. Reflexology is a form of ancient Chinese medicine involving the treatment by massage of reflex areas in the feet. Different areas of the feet correspond with other areas of the body. The hands are used to give a thorough massage to areas of the feet. Any apparent sensitive areas will indicate an imbalance, as will the formation of crystal deposits (calcium and uric acid). Relexology helps a wide range of conditions 18

If children do not collect conkers nowadays, the position was very different 100 years ago when in the autumn of 1917, a notice appeared on the walls of classrooms and scout huts across Britain. ‘Groups of scholars and boy scouts are being organised to collect conkers... This collection is invaluable war work and is very urgent. Please encourage it’. It was not explained why the conkers were needed but the children were offered 7s 6d for every hundredweight they handed in.

The secret, when finally revealed was that they were needed to help with the production of acetone an essential part of the propellant for shells and bullets known as cordite. Before the war acetone had been produced from wood, mainly imported from the USA, but it was soon realised that an alternative domestic supply was needed and a Jewish scientist Chaim Weitzmann developed a process

including arthritis and rheumatism, back and neck problems, kidney disorders, circulatory problems, digestive disorders, sinus problems, migraine headaches, asthma and menstrual troubles, to name but a few.

involving the use of maize and potatoes to produce acetone at factories in Dorset and Norfolk. Together the two factories produced 90,000 litres a year, enough to feed the seemingly insatiable demand for cordite. (The British Army and Royal Navy fired 240,000,000 million shells between 1914 and 1918.)

By 1917 the maize and potatoes were needed to feed the hungry people of Britain and another source of acetone was needed and Weitzmann suggested that conkers might be the answer and the appeal to boys and girls to collect horse chestnuts went out. Production was centred in Kings Lynn but there were technical problems and delays and the process was never as successful as hoped.

So did conkers help win the war? Well they certainly played a small part but perhaps the most surprising outcome was that Weitzmann, a leading Zionist, was rewarded by the British Government for his work on producing acetone by their support for the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine (The Balfour Declaration). When the state of Israel was finally established in 1948 Chaim Weitzmann became its first president.

So when you encourage your children to plant their conkers you can also include a bit of history and tell them of the role of this humble seed. Bob Wilkinson

In nearly all cases the person feels more relaxed and more able to cope with life’s stresses. The whole body will become more balanced and the immune system will improve. The Bayly School was the first reflexology teaching body to be established in the UK and is the official teaching body of the British Reflexology Association. Reflexology may, on the surface, appear to be a simplistic form of massage treatment, but the Bayly School of Reflexologists are qualified in this specialised field of treatment and results obtained can be amazing. For appointments contact Kevin Keeler on 07900 215064 or 07989 332219. Cromer Times 455 October 11th 2014

Young People had a fantastic, free summer of fun with North Norfolk Youth Hubs North Norfolk Youth Hubs had a fantastic summer of activities with young people from Cromer, Sheringham, Mundesley and Stalham. The Youth Hubs is a Youth Advisory Board funded project that started last year, aimed at providing young people in rural areas with access to free, positive activities.

Youth workers from MAP—a young persons’ charity based in Norwich and Great Yarmouth—developed a range of activities for young people that help them learn new skills, build self-esteem, and raise confidence. Providing a safe and welcoming space for young people to socialise in is at the heart of the Hubs’ aims.

Activities included a 4 day vintage photography workshop with Cromer museum, a paintballing excursion, a photo walk, a trip to Barton Turf to learn about the broads, a graffiti art session and a relaxing walk around Sheringham Park.

Now that the summer is over, the Hubs will be starting up again from 4-6pm at Stalham Youth Club and Oddfellows’ Hall in Sheringham every other Thursday, and at Merchant’s Place in Cromer every second Wednesday.

As well as having a safe, warm place to socialise in, the Hubs are base where young people can access sexual health advice, information about drugs and alcohol and confidential support from experienced youth workers.

If you or someone you know is interested in joining one of the Hubs, then please contact youth workers Will Mills or Hannah Garrard on 07876 864281 or email williammills@map.uk.net or hannahgarrard@map.uk.net

CROMER GIFT SHOP

The news that the Big Lottery Fund Awards for All Scheme has approved the project to improve the car park and upgrade the re-cycling areas is tremendously encouraging. Nearly £10,000 has been allocated. The access and surface will be much more user-friendly and the recycling skips will sit on a concrete area that can be kept clean. The work is expected to take place before the end of the year, whilst contractors are working so the skips will be re-positioned but still accessible. Fly-dumping is an ever present problem, the latest deposit of grass-cuttings and dead petunias has generated warnings from both NNDC and the Parish Council but is something that we cannot prevent. Any information as to the perpetrators would be very welcome. Once the improvements are completed CCTV surveillance will be installed.

Less Welcome Developments…

The news that NNDC are extending their doorstep collections of recyclable materials to include glass was expected but not welcome. Many charities, clubs, churches, schools etc have organised recycling as a funding stream for many years and could now potentially lose that income. It is not clear whether the council’s decision to compete in this market is to meet political targets, or whether the costs of administration will leave a surplus for the rate-payers. PLEASE continue to support your local community groups with glass and paper donations. If you are donating your recyclables to a charitable collection point maybe offer to bring family and neighbour’s on the same visit. The financial rewards to charities are not enormous but provide a steady income. Currently a rebate of over £50 a tonne is claimable and groups like Thorpe Market Church have no means of replacing the income lost under the new scheme.

North Norfolk Hockey Club

North Norfolk Hockey Club, based at Cromer Academy is searching for female hockey players to join first and second teams. Now is a great time to join as the season is about to start. Training takes place on Mondays 7.30pm – 9pm and matches are on Saturdays.

The 1st XI had a successful season (as North Walsham Hockey Club) last year, gaining promotion to East Div 1N and are looking to boost the squad after losing players to injury, pregnancy and university.

We would love to hear from anyone who currently does or who used to play at school or college, is looking for a new challenge or wants to play at a higher level. All welcome! Contact Charlotte Fiske 07810 821082 or email charlotte_else@yahoo.co.uk or jotodd.jt@gmail.com

How to Save Tax

Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr

Any Inheritance Tax saving scheme that looks ‘too good to be true’ almost certainly is. There is a politician-lead crackdown on tax avoidance scheme. This is more aimed at the super-wealthy than the man in the street with money in the bank or a house that is worth a bit, but impacts on them too.

Whatever you own, or once owned but still enjoy the benefit of, as well as anything you have given away in the last 7 years is fair-game for the taxman when you die. I have written articles on using the various small annual exemptions and allowances in the recent past and those used c onsistently are beneficial.

Joking apart, spending is a good way of saving tax but spending too much can leave you financiallystranded at the time when you are most vulnerable.

Trusts are useful but are not a universal panacea. What might work to protect assets from being assessable for the cost of care might well not work for tax-planning. Social Services and the Local Authority apply different tests to those of the taxman.

Inheritance Tax is saved for the benefit of one’s heirs and of course a solicitor has to be very clear who their client is. The solicitor’s duty is to their client and not to the wider family (other than in a very secondary way).

Giving your house to your children only ‘works’ for Inheritance Tax planning if there is no ‘gift with reservation of benefit’, which generally means that you need to pay a market rent; whereas, an asset protection trust (where your

children own your home but allow you to live there rent-free) can still work for care fee protection if you do it long enough before nursing or other care is required. It all depends on intention at the time of the gift and is looked at together with all the facts and circumstances. This may change in the future as the cost of care spirals ever upwards and Local Authorities have less money to go round to spend on care of the elderly. Norfolk is particularly as risk of having to take a tougher line as we have a higher than the national average proportion of older people.

If you require advice on this matter please contact our private Client team here at Hayes + Storr on 01263 825959. if you require advice on any other legal matter please telephone our office or email law@hayes-storr.com.

Hayes + Storr – All you’ll ever need!

Remember always that it is only when you are worth more than £325,000 (or £650,000 in the case of a married couple, or civil partners) that Inheritance Tax will be paid on your death.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Advice must be tailored to the individual and their family and finances. Even hard-bitten tax advisors appreciate that schemes which save tax, but at personal inconvenience, are often not the answer. The important thing is to take advice early while you still have the health and energy to implement arrangements, to do this before a care home becomes anything close to a reality, and (using your crystal ball) more than seven years before you die. “This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.”

Friends of Cromer Museum

As in previous years the Friends of Cromer Museum are organising a series of talks over the autumn/winter period. The first one this season was a talk by Gary Rossin who is the Project Director of SHARP, the Sedgeford Historical and Archaeological Research Project. This project began in 1995 and has just completed its nineteenth year of excavation at the site in Sedgeford. In that time over 4000 people have worked on the site at one time or another for the few weeks in the summer when the dig takes place. The project attracts volunteers from both the UK and abroad. This year helpers from New Zealand, the USA and Norway took part.

Sedgeford lies on the River Heacham which was a substantial waterway in the past. It is also near the Icknield Way, an ancient trackway, and the Peddars Way. This gave the village some strategic links with the outside world and helps to explain why it has been in continual occupation for so long. In the late Neolithic and early Bronze Ages there seems to have been a fairly settled population. Burial mounds close to the trackways are evidence of this and have been dated to c. 2300 BC. One of the most exciting finds from the Iron Age was a cow’s femur that contained 39 gold coins minted in Northern France c.55BC. It may not be coincidence that this is the year of the first Roman occupation of England. The Iron Age burials on the site show continuity of occupation with the Bronze Age. Remains of a Roman farm have been found which contains an early grain drying system. Evidence exists of Sedgeford’s role in the First World War as a training base for pilots so not all the work undertaken is from the dim and distant past. Most of the work over the early years has focused on the Anglo-Saxon period. Over 300 graves from the period c.700-925 AD have been excavated and are clearly Christian in nature. They have provided archaeologists with a mine of information about the site and its occupants. Men were on average 5ft 10ins in height and women averaged 5ft 5ins. Tooth decay was very rare but there were signs of much wear and tear. Most of those buried were between 35 and 45 years old but

Hello, I am Roser Wynne from Barcelona. My opportunity learning English started with a great commitment of ten years. I did not realize what I was missing until I came to England.

My first experience coming to the U.K was the wonderful place of Reading. This was as a Baby Sitter, looking after four children. I was strongly encouraged years later to come to England by my family looking for work.

I fell in love with a handsome man called David but I could not understand him at first. This later helped me to further my career in teaching Spanish Lessons, through his motivation and friends´s advice.

I have two lots of students teaching from home and I am looking for lots more people. I teach in a dynamic and tailored way making my own materials for my clients. We look forward to seeing our small business in Cromer expand and helping people have more taught by Roser Wynne enjoyable holidays from Barcelona and relations with All you need to start is a England and Spain.

some did live longer. 9 skeletons showed signs of trauma, perhaps evidence of Viking incursion. Oysters and mussels featured heavily in the people’s diet. There is evidence of smelting and iron making.

Many years of work lie ahead for the members of the SHARP team as only a small part of the site has been excavated so far but it was very interesting to hear a progress report on the work to date. A book has recently been published on the results of the first eleven years of the project entitled “Diggincg Sedgeford – a people’s archaeology” and it is published by Cromer’s very own Poppyland Publishing. Our next meeting is on Friday 17 October at 7.30 pm in the Community Hall in Cromer. David Stannard will be focusing on another local theme when he speaks on “Eccles – a Lost Norfolk Village”. All are welcome. Cost £2.50.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Yet more kittens have arrived in care, all from outside situations and most of which needing to be hand reared. Stephanie, Kelly, Irene and Lesley are all now bottle feeding kittens and I can honestly say we have never had so many at one time before. There are also more kittens outside which need to be caught before they become feral and eight cats to be trapped to be neutered. As volunteers we only have a limited amount of time to commit to these situations and do need to rely heavily on the help and co-operation of people living where the cats are situated. Fortunately, in most instances, people are only too happy to help as, at the end of the day, they will benefit. It is usually a case of asking them to identify where the cats/kittens are living, set a trap to catch them, and ring us once they have been caught. Once caught, the kittens come into care and we take the adult cats of both sexes to the vets and get them neutered. Although it only takes a few moments to set a trap and to give us a call once something has been caught, it does mean a far bigger saving of time from our point of view.

At present we have two traps in the garden of one lady and have recently caught one kitten and one cat there. We have already taken 12 kittens from this area so you can imagine how quickly the problem could have escalated if they had not come into care. Four of the 12 kittens were actually caught in another lady’s garden earlier in the year. She and her partner also managed to trap the mother who was 26

neutered and returned to the area. If she had not been caught she would have had at least one more litter by now and the three female kittens would probably have been pregnant too. Apart from all the kittens now in care, we should not forget all the lovely adult cats in care that are also looking for a new home. Their ages range from a few months to the oldest, which are roughly 10 years old, so if you would prefer an older cat there are plenty to choose from.

ZULU WARS!

When the Cromer and Sheringham PROBUS Club met at The Links Hotel for its monthly meeting on 2 September, the Chairman, Geoff Mather welcomed two new members. Following the usual lunch, former Regimental Sergeant Major John Needham gave a fascinating and entertaining talk on the Zulu Wars. He illustrated his talk with his large collection of uniforms and weapons from both sides of the conflict, correcting some of the myths about the wars which have been promulgated in books and films.

Following the talk, a vote of thanks was proposed by club member Tony Lyons, but such was the interest in the subject that members were still asking questions and examining John’s military memorabilia as the meeting disbursed.

Probus Clubs exist throughout the country to enable retired Professional and Business gentlemen to meet and socialise. If you might be interest in joining PROBUS, telephone Club Secretary, Gordon Hatchett for further information on 01263 826881. Cromer Times 455 October 11th 2014

FREE Spooky Fun at Bure Valley Railway!

Throughout the half term holiday, 25th October to 2nd November 2014, the Bure Valley Railway will be holding its popular children’s event, “The Spooky Express”. Trains will operate throughout each day from both Aylsham and Wroxham Stations (see timetable). A children’s competition to see how many spooky items can be spotted on the train journey, a colouring corner and a decorated Whilstlestop Café add to this themed event. Also, the Railway’s resident Bear will be dressed up for the occasion to welcome each train at Aylsham Station.

To make this a truly family friendly event, the Railway is giving free travel for every child when accompanied by a fare-paying adult (maximum of 2 children per adult, train only). No prior booking required.

Susan Munday, Business Manager and organiser of this event, says, “Children of all ages can enjoy lots of spooky fun without it being too scary!”

MP set to raise over £6,000 for local health charities after 100 mile bike ride

North Norfolk MP completed a 100 mile sponsored bike ride at the end of last month to support local health charities. His efforts are set to raise over £6,000. “It is a relief to have completed the ride in one piece but I am thrilled by the donations that have been made to support local health charities. The generosity of local people who have sponsored my ride is truly humbling.” Over 100 sponsorship cheques have been received and further donations have been made online. The total of donations received so far is over £6,143 and with Gift Aid added they will be worth over £6,500 to local charities. The 100 mile cycle route took in community health facilities at North Walsham, Cromer, Kelling and Wells as well as visits to the Break shop at Stalham and the Break headquarters in Sheringham. “The second day of the tour was a real slog because of the appalling weather,” said Mr Lamb. “I am particularly grateful to the staff at Wells Community Hospital who took pity on me and dried my clothes for me and warmed me up with a cup of tea!” Sponsors included publisher and broadcaster Iain Dale who was Norman Lamb’s Conservative opponent at the 2005 General Election. Mr Dale encouraged Mr Lamb with a message to ‘Keep on Troshin’’ on his Just Giving web page. you can still sponsor Mr lamb via his website www.normanlamb.org.uk
