St John Abulance in Cromer receives a new defibrillator and essential training equipment Continued from front cover...

Richard Earl, St John Ambulance's Cromer unit manager, said 'We're delighted to have received this invaluable defibrillator and new training kit. The items were purchased with donations from a number of local groups including the Cromer St John Darts League, who have been raising funds for us for over 50 years, and the Friday Table Top Team who, over the last couple of years, have run monthly sales for this purpose.

North Norfolk Speakers Club recently held a Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contest in North Walsham. The event was well supported by members and guests, and the evening was enjoyed by all.

Stuart Richards was awarded first place in the Humorous Speech Contest for his cleverly entertaining and original story – ‘The Extraordinary Tale of the Queen and her Bed’.

Randall Family Representatives

'In addition, we are very grateful to the Folk on the Pier group and last, but by no means least, the Randall family and friends who started the whole process off. The generosity and assistance of all these people means that my volunteers can continue to be the difference between a life lost and a life saved in North Norfolk.'

1st Floordebut Gallery Council gallery hosts exciting exhibition

North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) public art gallery is hosting a collection of cleverly engineered amalgamations of old and new photographs by local artist, James Fox, until 14 November.

Featuring an array of views across the county and country, this interactive display entitled ‘Step into the Past – the Time Travel Exhibition’, allows the viewer to quite literally move from the present day into the depths of the past. Over the course of several months, James travelled to the locations captured in photographs taken more than 100 years ago to recapture the scene today. Through the use of lens, the pictures are painstakingly processed as a 3D morphing print showing the two worlds colliding with captivating results.

James studied Photography at Paston College, taking a particular interest in stereo (3D)

The Strand Club, Overstrand

October's meeting was held on a beautifully sunny day and whilst James Begley, our speaker and Community First Responder, set up his display we heard that our January lunch will be held in the Foundry Arms in Northrepps this year. They have provided us with a beautifully presented, very tempting menu and our members will be able to take advantage of a subsidy which will mean they will pay only £10 and guests £13. This money must be brought to the November meeting when their menu choices should also be made.

form is to be completed by the householder, one for every occupant, and will hold all the important information which might be needed. Many of our members took a container home. If you require more details either about the message in a bottle or First Responders generally, please contact James Begley on 576539.

James then began by explaining the meaning of his talk's title "Message in a Bottle". A free plastic container (supplied by the Lions Club) is available which is invaluable in an emergency situation. Often when a First Responder arrives at the scene of a call-out, the patient is semi-conscious or confused. If they have a companion they also could be confused and distressed. Imparting information about medication, allergies, even name and date of birth, could well be impossible and is certainly time-consuming. The little container contains a form and two stickers. The first sticker goes on an internal door leading to the kitchen, by the handle. The second sticker goes on the fridge and the container lives inside the fridge - an easy place to locate. Dear Margaret,

Do they listen? Are they deaf or don’t they really care? We understand that the Council want to move the weekly Friday Market from the Meadow car park to Tucker St, the High St and the Taxi rank. They wish to move the taxi’s to two locations away from the town centre. The Market traders don’t want to move, the Taxi’s don’t want to move and the businesses in Tucker St and the High St do not want it changing also. At the last Town Council meeting, which a lot of people attended, not one person there was in favour of this proposal. It was by sheer accident that I found out about this scheme which seemed that this plan was top secret to most of the people of Cromer. This proposed scheme would then mean that all including the elderly would have to walk some distance to get a Taxi home with their heavy bags of shopping come rain or shine. I thought that Council members were elected to represent the people of Cromer not become a secret service. So why don’t the Council listen to the voices of Cromer and forget such a mad idea. After all, the people of Cromer elected you all in to office....didn’t they?

Dear Margaret,

I refer to the articles published recently about Thorpe Market Churchyard.

Although I appreciate the need for conservation where possible, I was very upset on visiting the Church in the summer to find it so untidy, overgrown and dangerous that I couldn’t reach the graves that I wanted to see. I was confirmed and married in St Margaret’s Church and, although I no longer live in the village, I do like to visit some of the graves of friends and family fairly regularly.

By all means have some areas of the Churchyard for wild flowers and fauna, but keep most of it well cut and looked after as it has been in the past few years. It is, after all, in the middle of the countryside not a town churchyard where maybe wildlife would need to be encouraged.

Surely the safety and enjoyment of visitors is more important than a few plants.

I also find it inappropriate that all the cuttings have now been put into Hazel Grove covering some of the paths, and where ashes have been scattered.

Yours sincerely, Johanne Bowles

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

A further 17 kittens have come into care since our last article including one dear little girl called Duchess that came in from a barn and has sadly had to have her tail amputated due to a nasty puncture wound which had become infected. She also has a nasty bite wound on her leg and is still requiring treatment for this. This lucky little kitten has already incurred heavy vet bills even before she is old enough to be vaccinated. The cats in the colony mentioned last time are not turning up in time to get to the vets in the morning so we have to rethink our plans and consider holding them overnight in a pen. We do need to catch them all soon, before they have any more kittens!

Having recently highlighted the work undertaken by our fosterers we would like to recognise the work undertaken by our other volunteers, wit4hout whom the branch would have difficulty functioning. These include the ladies who come and help clean the cats at Dilham. They turn up in all weathers and, apart from cleaning, they also socialise the cats in care there.

Osteoarthritis in Cats

Some volunteers help by taking cats to the vets either for a consultation or, in the case of the feral cats, to be neutered, once trapped. There are sometimes Home Visits to be made when a cat has been booked. Our volunteers also help with collections and at our fund raising events. One Beana, one of our older lady makes up the very popular kittens, just waiting for hampers that Stephanie sells at the Christmas Sale. We also have the gifted someone to give her a home ladies who use their skills to make items to sell at our events, toys for the cats or items for the home. One recent newcomer to our fold makes lovely cards to sell and these are proving very popular in some of our veterinary practices and in various other venues.

Some of our volunteers also multitask and we applaud them all for all their hard work, not only with the cats, but also raising the money to ensure we can continue with the work that we do.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Most people recognise the sign of osteoarthritis (OA) in dogs but did you know it is also found in cats? Due to the stoic nature of cats and their ability to hide pain, OA can go unnoticed or be put down to general ‘old age’. Bony changes in the arthritic joint appear as rough surfaces, when these surfaces rub together they cause pain and inflammation.

Causes of Osteoarthritis

OA occurs when cartilage that cushions the joint gets worn away, this may be the result of injury – an old break or dislocation or mechanical ‘wear and tear’ as the animal gets older. It can be primary, which means no other problems are present & is due to ‘wear and tear’ of old joints, or it can be secondary which means there is some other factor to consider – for example an old injury. Obesity in cats, though not a primary cause of OA will certainly exacerbate symptoms if left un-managed.

Signs of Osteoarthritis

Reluctance to jump up or down onto sofa/bed etc, difficulty getting in and out of cat flap, difficulty using litter tray and stiffness or lameness in legs to name a few. Diagnosis - If your cat is displaying any of the signs mentioned above it may well be suffering from OA, to enable us to make a diagnosis you will need to bring your cat in to see one of our vets. Once we have a diagnosis you will be referred to one of our nurses for an arthritis clinic. How you can help at home - There are many things you can do to help your cat’s mobility. Such as: Provide a soft padded bed at floor level, prop open the cat flap or leave a door open to allow easy access to outside and provide a litter tray, with at least 1 low side, indoors so your cat doesn’t have to go outside. Diet and supplements - There are many supplements on the market for arthritic conditions, Glucosamine and Chondroitin are amongst the most effective. These along with any dietary changes required will be discussed at the Arthritis Clinic by the nurse. Medication - Once diagnosis has been made, it is most likely your cat will be prescribed an anti-inflammatory pain killer. This comes in a liquid form and is highly palatable to cats; this will be discussed by the Vet at your initial appointment. For the full article on OA in cats visit our website www.miramarvets.co.uk We will be holding an evening talk about Osteoarthritis in Cats at Miramar Vets, Sheringham on the 12th November at 7.30pm. To book a place at this event please contact us as soon as possible, places are limited. Refreshments will be provided! FREE GOODIE BAG! If your dog has epilepsy a new book by local author Gill Carrick could help

Just like humans, dogs can suffer from frequent seizures - and just why these happen isn’t always clear. But generally speaking, a brain tumour, a head injury or a reaction to a vaccine or some chemicals, is at the root of the problem. Genes have a role to play too.

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions among our furry friends with as many as one in every 20 dogs affected, to varying degrees. It usually develops before a hound’s fifth birthday and can affect dogs of any age or breed. On the good news front, with the right veterinary care; a good (low-fat) diet and complementary therapies, most epileptic dogs can live a relatively normal life.

My Dog has Epilepsy, but lives life to the full – a practical guide for owners, contains expert veterinary advice; touching true stories and glorious colour photos. Available now at Jarrolds, or online at Amazon.com

I have lived with this wonderful breed for almost 30 years and I have rehomed Labradors for 13 years. I offer a caring, knowledgeable, experienced and respectful rehoming service for Labradors in need.

The main reasons for rehoming Labradors are changes in family circumstances for example divorce or bereavement. Permanent caring and loving homes are required whereby someone is at home for most of the day, and where there is a private garden. North Norfolk Ghost Stories for Halloween

As we approach Halloween this is a good time to remember that there are hundreds of ghost stories set in North Norfolk, some of which are much too close for comfort!

All Saints Church, Beeston Regis In the churchyard of All Saints there are two granite boulders, one is used to cover a grave and the other rests beside the north wall. The stones were originally each side of a pathway leading to a farmhouse in the grounds of the adjoining, ruined, Beeston Priory.

A local tale says that in the late 1930s, a farmer named James Reynolds often drove his horse and cart along this pathway. Several times, at sunset, a hooded grey ghostly figure leapt out from behind one of the boulders and tried to grab the horse’s reins before vanishing. The farmer decided that when he died this stone should be placed on his grave, in an attempt at ‘laying’ the apparition. James Reynolds died in 1941 and, in accordance with his wishes the boulder was put on his grave, his wife Ann Elizabeth was also interred there when she died in 1967. This boulder is engraved with both their names.

Black Shuck There are many stories about Black Shuck along the North Norfolk Coast and many go back hundreds of years. Black Shuck or Old Shuck as he is sometimes known is a large black dog with fiery red eyes as big as saucers. According to the tales the eyes will burn right

into your soul if you look into them. Round its neck is a piece of chain that clanks and rattles as it haunts its way along the coast from Sheringham to Cromer.

On stormy nights when the wind whistled around the chimneys children were told that if they did not sleep ‘Old Shuck will come and get you’.

and west of Gresham Cross and these are known as the Shrieking Pits. The tall phantom of a woman in white is said to wander around these pits, sometimes peering into them, but all the while wringing her hands and moaning and shrieking.

When the pits were thought to be prehistoric, she was believed to be the ghost of a Stone Age Woman. Now some say that she is the spirit of a mother looking for her baby who had been murdered by her jealous husband who was convinced that it wasn’t his child. After burying the baby in the pit west of Aylmerton Church, he went back and murdered his wife.

A similar story is about the ghost of a woman in a ‘winding sheet’ who rises out of the ground and roams around Weybourne. North Walsham Church.

It has been suggested that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle heard this legend whilst staying at Cromer Hall and that this may have inspired him to write ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’. The Shrieking Pits.

In North Norfolk there are many shallow pits in the fields which were once thought to be prehistoric dwellings. In fact they are early medieval iron workings. A few are visible in the parish of Aylmerton in the fields just north

In the olden days, there was a dare for townsfolk in North Walsham leaving the White Swan pub to run around the church backwards three times, after which it was said that organ sounds could be heard coming from the empty church.

When a man got on the shoulder of a friend to look through the church window he saw ghostly figures walking up the aisle towards the altar.

The Hare & Moon Gallery showcases East Anglian artists

Claire Knight, a north Norfolk paper cut artist, opened The Hare & Moon Gallery at Alby Crafts and Gardens this summer to showcase her own work and that of other East Anglian artists.

The gallery will be hosting its first exhibition 'Art in Miniature' from Saturday 22 November. The exhibition will feature new work by Georgia Dodson and limited edition wood engravings by Andy English.

Georgia's work is strongly influenced by a tradition of seventeenth century northern European forest floor paintings. For this collection Georgia has been working 'plein air' in oil on copper sheets measuring only 10cm square. She seeks to re-engage the viewer with the detail and the complexity of life and decay on the forest floor.

“The vast history of wooded landscapes is impressive in itself, a definitive root to many cultures, yet perhaps overlooked and forgotten in the present,” explains Georgia. “My paintings seek to re-engage viewers with wooded landscapes by addressing contrasts between the perceived 'wildwood' of the past and the small pockets of ancient woodland remaining today, raising questions about human connections with nature.”

Andy English, a wood engraver from Little Downham near Ely, is renowned for his meticulous prints, which he describes as 'unashamedly small scale, rural and autobiographical'. All of his work starts off as a detailed drawing, which is engraved into a woodblock, often using a magnifying glass to achieve the fine detail he wants. He then uses his nineteenth century Albion press to print limited editions of the finished design. This exhibition features twelve of Andy's wood engravings, including ‘Hares, Ely’ and an artist's proof of 'Woody', a local cat of considerable character.

Stepping Stones Pre-School

Stepping Stones Pre-School, based at Aldborough Primary School is very proud to announce it has received a ‘good’ in its recent Ofsted inspection.

The inspector was particularly impressed with the staff and the quality of the teaching: “Staff are kind, attentive and form very good relationships with children and their families. This results in children forming strong bonds and secure attachments with their key person and others caring for them. Parents speak very highly of the warm and friendly environment and are confident their children are happy and settled.”

“Teaching is effective, captures children's interest and makes good use of the child-centred environment and stimulating resources.”

“Children are very confident and self-assured as they form secure attachments with friendly staff. They learn to be independent, sociable and communicate well in readiness for future learning.”

Lydia Pryor, Pre-School Leader said “thanks to committee, parents and staff who have all worked so hard to help us achieve this fantastic result. We are now confident that an outstanding outcome is within our reach, and we are really excited about the future.”

Stepping Stones is a registered charity (Charity No. 1077895) offering sessions for children aged 2-4 years. Why not come and see the good work for yourself at our Open Day on Saturday 22 November from 10am-12noon. You’ll have the opportunity to chat to staff and parents while children enjoy fun activities, as well as a chance to have a look around Aldborough Primary School.

Help to Lessen Loneliness

There have been several articles in the media lately creating an awareness of the loneliness that can be experienced by the elderly population.

Current statistics reveal that up to 17% of the elderly have contact with a friend, family or neighbour less than once per week. This can have a detrimental effect on both physical and mental health.

It is well known that there is a large elderly population here in North Norfolk, and we, at Age UK North Norfolk Befriending Service, receive many requests for a volunteer to visit and brighten up someone’s day. Our volunteers are truly inspirational – they give up their own time to visit people on a regular basis, sometimes several hours per week, providing companionship and support.

Befriending Services such as ours have been proved to be effective ways of helping to combat loneliness and isolation, and we have had very positive feedback from our volunteers who visit, and from the elderly they befriend.

Demand for visits is high, and we are not always able to provide a volunteer to visit immediately. So if anyone feels they can spare an hour or two each week to brighten up someone’s day, do get in touch. We would love to hear from you.

Cromer WI

We opened our October meeting with a talk by Jacqui Palmer, Manager, from the Henry Blogg Museum in Cromer. She told us of many of the rescues that Henry Blogg made while he was Cox of the “HF Bailey” especially the Sepoy in 1933. Her very interesting talk was accompanied by photographs which were shown on the newly acquired screen in the Hall. Some of our members also told of their experiences as they actually remembered Henry Blogg. We were also shown photographs of the museum, which was built round the ‘HF Bailey’, and told of some of the work that went on there. After a cup of tea we carried on with the rest of the meeting. Everyone who went to our Soup and Puddings all agreed it was a great success. Plans were discussed for our annual Carol Service in the main church along with six other local Institutes in December. We will be taking part in Cromer carnival next year as it is the centenary year of the WI. A group photograph was taken and this may be used at the WI Centenary Exhibition at Gressenhall next year. The competition of a carved pumpkin was won by Ann Winter, Penny Jeffries was second and Hazel Patrickson was third. There will be a lot of pumpkin soup about this weekend! Next month is our Annual Meeting and we will not be having a speaker. New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street.

Crayford and Abbs will be educating drivers about the importance of healthy tyres as part of Tyre Safety Month this October, though they have decided to spread the message through November as well.

very best service.”

The tread grooves on a tyre help to clear water from the contact patch between a tyre and the road surface so the vehicle can grip properly. During wet conditions, tyres with a good tread depth can typically clear enough water to fill a bucket in around seven seconds. The more worn or under-inflated a tyre is, the less effective it is at clearing water.

Statistics show that more than 1,200 casualties occur on the UK’s roads every year as a result of illegal, defective or under-inflated tyres a number further exacerbated by last year’s extreme wet weather.

Kevin Abbs said: “After a treacherous winter last year, we are glad to be supporting this year’s TyreSafe campaign, focusing on the importance of driving on tyres with adequate tread depth. We’re happy to offer our customers a free tyre safety check in order to make sure they will have maximum control, whatever the weather. It could literally be a matter of life and

In addition to the increased risk presented by worn tyres, driving on tyres that are below the legal minimum tread depth of 1.6mm could result in a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points for each tyre.

The Tyre Safety Month is supported by safety organisations such as the Highways Agency, the Chief Fire Officers Association and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, as well as Road Safety GB.

Full Network Coverage for Mobiles?

Ann Steward, the former Norfolk County Council Cabinet Member responsible for Economic Development and now the Prospective Parliamentary Conservative Candidate for North Norfolk, has welcomed moves by the Conservative group at Norfolk County Council to push forward with plans to allow mobile phone users to access full network coverage across Norfolk.

In June, the Government announced plans to force mobile phone operators to share their networks to eliminate mobile “not-spots”.

These plans will follow on from similar schemes in parts of Europe where governments and even the European Commission promote passive infrastructure sharing among mobile operators.

On Monday the Conservative group at Norfolk County Council will present a motion calling on all of Norfolk’s MPs to lobby together for the earliest possible enactment of the Government’s proposals.

Ann Steward, who was a driving force in the County Council’s investment in the broadband upgrade, currently underway across Norfolk, thinks improvements in mobile phone coverage go hand in hand with better broadband. In recent months Ann has continued to campaign for better digital services for Norfolk and recently took part in a ministerial delegation led by George Freeman MP with the Minister for the Digital Economy, Ed Vaizey MP.

Ann said, “I know how many people and businesses are frustrated by patchy or non-existent mobile signal in parts of Norfolk; it's one of the biggest issues facing our county. The problem is particularly bad in North Norfolk where rural communities suffer very poor mobile service and feel all the more isolated.

Local, genuine, honest company. Call now for your free in-home consultation Bringing quality back to North Norfolk. As well as kitchens & bathrooms we offer

It has far-reaching implications, on our health and welfare, on our competitiveness, on our learning opportunities and on Norfolk's attractiveness as a place to live, work and do business. It is a Conservative priority to enable mobile phone users to “roam” across networks to access the best coverage and I hope to drive this forward at the earliest opportunity.

Help Norfolk prevent the spread of Norovirus this winter

Ahead of winter, people in Norfolk are being urged to help prevent the spread of Norovirus. Sometimes known as the winter vomiting bug, Norovirus is the most common stomach bug in the UK. It is highly contagious and can affect people of all ages.

30th

Outbreaks of Norovirus in public places, such as hospitals, nursing homes and schools, are common because the virus can survive for several days on surfaces or objects touched by an infected person.

To prevent its spread, public health officials are asking anyone with vomiting and diarrhoea – or who has been in contact with someone with these symptoms – to remain at home and off work for at least 48hrs after their last symptoms. This will help to protect Norovirus from spreading into areas such as schools, care homes and hospitals where it may put vulnerable people at risk.

Norovirus is unpleasant but usually something that normally healthy people can recover from at home without the need to see a doctor.

There is no specific cure for Norovirus, so anyone affected by the bug should let it run its course. It is usually mild and should not last more than a couple of days.

FreeAds

Lucy Macleod, Interim Director of Public Health at Norfolk County Council, said “If you have Norovirus, there are lots of things you can do to help prevent its spread. As well as washing hands regularly with soap and warm water, try to avoid direct contact as far as possible with other people or preparing food for others until at least 48 hours after your symptoms have disappeared. You may still be contagious, even though you no longer have sickness or diarrhoea.

“Our priority is to avoid the spread of the virus to GP practices, care homes and hospitals where it may put vulnerable people at risk and affect staff. Norovirus is more serious and even more easily spread among people who are already ill.”

Preventing the spread of Norovirus Norovirus is easily spread. If an infected person doesn't wash their hands before handling food, they can pass the virus on to others. You can also catch it by touching contaminated surfaces or objects.

To help prevent the virus spreading, the following measures should be followed: • wash your hands frequently with warm, soapy water • don't share towels and flannels

• disinfect surfaces that an infected person has touched

If you have Norovirus, you may continue to be infectious for a short period after your symptoms stop. You should therefore avoid preparing food and direct contact with others for at least 48 hours after your symptoms disappear.

Treating Norovirus If you have Norovirus, following the steps below can help ease your symptoms: • Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration • Take paracetamol for any fever or aches and pains • If you feel like eating, eat foods that are easy to digest

Extra care should also be taken to prevent babies and small children who have diarrhoea and vomiting from dehydrating by giving them plenty of fluids.

Each year, it's estimated that between 600,000 and 1 million people in the UK catch Norovirus. Although the illness is sometimes called the ‘winter vomiting bug’ because it's more common in winter, you can catch the virus at any time of the year.

Family Arts Festival

Sheringham Little Theatre is to join venues in Norfolk and Suffolk to take part in the 2014 Family Arts Festival this autumn half-term.

The North Norfolk theatre will join Seachange Arts, in Yarmouth, the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds, King’s Lynn Arts Centre and the Garage, Theatre Royal, Norwich Puppet Theatre and Playhouse, in Norwich, to offer an exciting programme of music, theatre, dance, visual arts and workshops for children and their parents.

The UK-wide Family Arts Festival, which runs from Friday 17 October to Sunday 2 November, is in its second year, with award-winning writer and former children’s laureate Michael Morpurgo as the 2014 patron and a major partnership with Center Parcs.

As part of the event Sheringham Little Theatre is staging an adaptation of Hansel and Gretel at 2.30pm on Friday 31 October. This fun-filled adaptation of the classic tale features action, magic, slapstick comedy, singing and puppetry. There will also be lots of colourful costumes, amazing sets, illusions and maybe a custard pie or too!

On the morning of the same day a family workshop based on the production will be held from 10.30am to 12.30pm. As part of the festival there will also be a horror performance workshop for families, from 2pm to 5pm, on Monday 27 October.

Joseph Burnham, marketing manager at the Sheringham Little Theatre, which is

co-ordinating the regional marketing of the event in this area, says: “Hansel and Gretel looks set to be great fun and the workshops are also ideal for families.

“This is the first time we joined other venues to take part in the festival – and between us we have some very lively and interesting productions and workshops for families here.

Advice

Review of concert held on 12 October at Templewood, Northrepps HUW WIGGIN (Saxophone) and JAMES SHERLOCK (Piano)

Had this opening concert of Cromer Music Evenings season been advertised as a programme of contemporary classical music, the beautiful music room at Templewood would have been sparsely attended. In fact, a full audience was enthralled by Huw Wiggin’s programme of colourful music from the 20th and 21st centuries. Possibly though, as the virtuoso Huw Wiggin, Commonwealth Musician of the Year and Gold medal winner of the 2014 Overseas League annual music competition, was making a welcome return to Templewood, the knowledgeable audience knew what to expect.

The opening work in the programme set the scene: the dazzling rock-influenced Fuzzy Bird Sonata written in 1991 by Japanese composer Takashi Yoshimatsu. Percussion themes, cascading scales, glissandi and long tones all effortlessly and elegantly played. The impact made by the next work Fantasia (1948) by Spanish composer Villa Lobos was marked, with its beautiful lyrical 2nd movement, surely one of the composer’s greatest moments. We revelled in the precision of ensemble and the Spanish colour provided by accomplished

accompanist James Sherlock. Later on in the programme we were treated to more Spanish sun in Manuel de Falla’s 7 Popular Songs from 1914 where the saxophone became a human voice, or was it vice versa? Astor Piazzolla is the composer that took the iconic Argentinean tango into the concert hall. His Histoire du Tango is one of his most popular works, and contrasts the 1930s cafe style of the dance to 1960s nightclub style. Quite sublime.

All through the programme, on soprano and alto saxes, vintage silver models from the Selmer factory in Paris, Wiggin produced a seamless flow of five octaves of pure dark liquid metal tone, with subtle vibrato perfectly matched to the pulse of the piece being played. Such is his assured and accomplished technique, including double-tonguing, multiphonics and circular breathing, that the listener is never aware of the utmost difficulty in some of his programme.

The concert’s centre piece was Three Letter Word (2010) by English composer Andy Scott. Wiggin gave the world premiere of this work, dedicated to the memory of Swedish virtuoso

jazz pianist and composer Esbjorn Svensson. Again the soloist made light of the technical demands, being able to play a melody in the highest reaches of the instrument, while accompanying himself in the lower registers. Such technical feats were also manifest in the concert’s final work, a suite from Bernstein’s West Side Story, where the soloist even had time to shout ‘mambo’ mid flow!

Throughout the programme, Sherlock the equally gifted partner at the piano, contributed both a solid foundation and a delicate veneer to the performance and his two solo spots of gems from Debussy and Rachmaninov delighted the audience. The two musicians were equally at home in chatting and joking with the audience, something that would not be possible at their next night’s concert in the Wigmore Hall.

Cromer Music Evenings, more accurately Templewood Music Afternoons, continues to be a concertgoer's delight with world-class performances of fascinating repertoire presented in uniquely elegant and intimate surroundings www.cromermusicevenings.org.uk Stephen Richards

The Ocean Beckons for Samundar Indian Kitchen

'"Samundar" is an Indian word meaning "ocean",' explains Mathahir Ali, head chef and co-owner of the Samundar Indian Kitchen. "When we launched the restaurant earlier this year, we wanted a name that reflected not just our culture and the origins of our food, but also the importance of where we are based - here in the heart of Cromer, where the sea has always played such a central role in people's lives.'

Mathahir and his wife have lived in Cromer for several years, and their two boys attend the local junior school. They recognise the importance of being part of the community the restaurant serves, and feel lucky to number many of the customers among their personal friends.

The Samundar Indian Kitchen offers a full traditional Indian menu, but with some exciting variations, including Cromer crab dishes, as well as cuisine derived from the owners' Bangladeshi roots. The restaurant is fully licensed, and is currently offering an exciting new wine list.

Mathahir has assembled an excellent team, and those choosing to dine in can rely on warm, friendly service in a relaxed and comfortable environment. The restaurant caters for all diners, but family groups are especially welcome.

The restaurant also offers a takeaway service, and home delivery is available within a four-mile radius.

53 year old Keith, a black belt in Hapkido, is a member of John Mezzetti’s Fighting Fit martial arts academy in Cromer. Ellen died suddenly from an epileptic seizure at 16 years of age. Keith’s dad and brother also suffered from epilepsy so this cause is very close to his heart. Ellen’s mum Lynn and dad John, with the help of their entire family and friends, have since embarked on many challenges including cycling the length of Great Britain and trekking the Grand Canyon. Keith now adds his own personal challenge to this list with this mentally and physically gruelling attempt.
