Cromer’s New Years Day Fireworks Photography Competition set to return

Cromer’s New Year’s Day Fireworks committee has announced the return of their annual photography competition to mark the 16th year of the annual display which began in 2000.

After the success of the competition last year, which saw over 100 entries, it is hoped that everyone from artists and community groups to ambitious individuals will enter the competition and get involved in this fabulous event.

The photography competition is open to all photographers aged 17+ and the brief for entrants is ‘Cromer Fireworks 2015’. Photographers are invited to come along to Cromer on New Year’s Day, bring their camera, photograph the event and get creative.

Cromer’s New Years Day Fireworks Photography Competition set to return Continued from front cover...

The winner of the competition will have their image turned into the official poster for the 2016 New Years Day Firework event as well as use in other promotional material. Local electrical retailer Hughes Plus, Cromer are sponsoring the event for the third year running and are offering the winner the latest Samsung 40” led TV worth £400.

Simon Morton, Manger of Hughes Plus in Cromer, said “We are thrilled to once again have the opportunity to support such a spectacular local event as the New Year’s Day Firework display. We felt the prize should reflect this and encourage ‘snappers’ to get snapping and produce some great local images!”

Having just undergone a revamp, the former Bennetts store in Cromer, now features a new suspended mezzanine floor to hold lots more stock in branch. This means customers can shop in branch and, indeed on Hughes’ click’n’collect website facility knowing that the store will almost certainly have the item in branch for one hour collection.

He went on to say “Being a local trading store we are always keen to support projects and events within our local community. All our staff in Cromer are long standing members of the team and are always pleased to offer their expert knowledge in guiding customers through the process of making that all important electrical purchase. Come visit us on the Holt road this festive season.”

Mustard Beer and Boots

When the Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club met for their November lunch, they were joined by Chris Armstrong, the author of the recently published book, “Mustard, Beer and Boots”. After lunch Chris gave an illustrated talk about the eight businessmen in his book who brought wealth and prosperity to Norfolk in the 19th century. He told fascinating anecdotes from his research about each of the businessmen ranging from J. J. Coleman of Mustard fame to the retailer J. J. Jarrold. At the conclusion of the meeting, Chris Armstrong was thanked by Nick Lee on behalf of the club for a most interesting and entertaining talk.

PROBUS Clubs exist throughout the country to enable retired Professional and Business gentlemen to meet and socialise. If you might be interest in joining PROBUS, telephone Club Secretary, Gordon Hatchett on 01263 826881 for further information.

Chairman of the Fireworks committee Jim Bond said “the annual New Year's Day Fireworks have been capturing people's imagination for 15 years, every year we see hundreds of fabulous photographs of the event in the press and online. Carers Rights Day - 28 November The Local branch of The Multiple Sclerosis Society in North Norfolk is having an information stand at Cromer hospital to raise awareness of Carers. The stand will be on the first floor from 10am to 1pm.

Carers Rights Day raises awareness of the needs of carers with the public, decision makers and professionals, helping to realise a vision of a society that respects, values and supports carers. (Carers UK)

Being a carer comes with huge responsibilities - people often give up their jobs and many enjoyable aspects of their lives to look after a friend, relative or neighbour. It's an ultimate act of human kindness.

A Carer spends (or intends to spend) a significant proportion of their life providing unpaid support to someone who is ill, frail, disabled or has a mental health problem or substance misuse problems.

Norfolk County Council has estimated that there are 94,691 carers in the county. (Health watch survey 2013-2014).

Our regular rotating Real Ales continues to please both regulars and visitors alike and whilst we tend to concentrate on Norfolk Ales we do occasionally introduce beers from a little further afield, giving our real ales devotes even more of a choice. Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society World War One Centenary Remembrance Concert St Peter’s Church, Sheringham, 8 November

Benjamin Britten’s arrangement of the National Anthem opened the concert in which the chorus and orchestra performed the first verse pianissimo, modulating to the dominant – progressing to a glorious crescendo to end. In Six Songs from a Shropshire Lad by George Butterworth, arranged by Lawrence Tao, the vocal projection and interpretations were so controlled by baritone Tom Stoddart who managed to rise above the orchestral accompaniment.

The chorus then performed For the Fallen by Douglas Guest in which Laurence Binyon’s famous words proved very apt for the occasion. Even though the words of Peter Aston’s So they gave their Bodies were written in 431BC they remain relevant today. John Ireland’s setting of Greater Love hath no Man than this is popular with many choirs because of the beautiful harmonies portraying the true meaning of the words. The choir were superb in performance of the three works creating emotion in an exciting way under the masterful direction of conductor Nathan Waring and accompanist Lawrence Tao playing organ.

Norfolk Rhapsody by Ralph Vaughan Williams performed by the English Chamber Orchestra transported the listener through the beauty of Norfolk with musical pictures of the landscape, waterways, big skies and nature itself. It is so impressionistic and enlightening how music creates such mindful pictures.

A short film was shown before the second half in which the composer, Patrick Hawes, spoke briefly about Edith Cavell, her life, her faith and how the work Eventide came about. The performance began with the semi-chorus, consisting of Gresham’s Prep School Chapel Choir, singing the first verse of Abide with Me. Soprano soloist Rosamund Walton, sang a setting of words Edith Cavell wrote from prison to her nephew. Walton’s voice, pure and rich in tone, filled the church with its clarity with perfect intonation. The chorus in a setting of words from Psalm 63 performed with sincerity in interpretation of the words. The singing by the semi-chorus of the second verse of Abide with Me added to the already emotional atmosphere evident in the auditorium. The chorus continued with a setting of the words pronouncing the official declaration of the sentence handed down to Edith Cavell followed by the soprano soloist, accompanied by harp, singing the words of a letter “to my dear nurses”. With the singing of the third verse of Abide with Me the emotional impact became very real. Rosamund Walton’s singing evin ardy of words from Thomas a Kempis The Imitation of Christ was truly beautiful. As the choir combined with the semi-chorus to sing the next verse of Abide with Me the atmosphere became almost tangible as the SELECTED USED CARS soprano, chorus and orchestra combined for the Prayer of Thanksgiving, as prayed by Edith Cavell on 11 October 1915: such an uplifting experience. The fifth verse described the deep faith which she had. To close Rosamund Walton sang Cavell’s now famous words “Patriotism is not enough…..” her captivating voice bringing to an end this most emotional and wonderful evening within the hallowed walls of St 10 60 Nissan Note N-Tec, 5dr, 31,000 mls, Aircon, CD, Alloys............................. £6995 Peter’s Church Sheringham. REVIEW -

The Way of Hope Foundation Cromer Parish Church

Once again Evelyn Smith, the Director of Caanan Christian Centre at Sheringham, made possible this concert performed by adults and children from The Way of Hope Foundation, Hungary. An organisation whose aim is to raise funds for orphanages and mothers homes, and for those growing up in State care, helping to integrate them into Society and putting Christian values into focus.

Tony Nash, Cromer’s Mayor, welcomed the performers - thanking them for coming to play in Cromer Church, wishing them a happy experience whilst in the area.

Mark Wright

Then followed a short summary of the work by a Director of The Way of Hope Foundation stating there were 70,000 children away from their families. Many pictures were shown on the Church screens of many activities made possible by the support on the Foundation, including testimonies of many people coming to faith.

The opening piece for two violins, trombone and piano set the standard for what was to come - this was followed by a team of young handbell ringers - 7 to 8 in all, gave a confident performance of Jeremiah Clark’s Trumpet Voluntary. In their second selection, the ringers gave a charming performance of Thine be the Glory - in both major and minor mode.

A Bach Partita for Unaccompanied Violin was played by memory, here the young performer "lost her way" but displayed great courage in "picking it up" and carried on regardless. Pieces arranged for two violins were played which included How Great Thou Art - the Russian hymn tune by Stuart K Hine.

David Bates & Darren Cole

More worship songs played by this very young group of ringers excelled in their performance of Onward Christian Soldiers. My Jesus My Saviour brought a beautiful performance by the two violinists. The ringers then became choristers - singing a selection of songs in their own language which emphasised that Jesus is King and to build your house on a rock.

An arrangement of Abide With Me with variations on the theme for two violins accompanied by piano was really the highlight of this charming concert.

More items were performed by the bells and strings with the violinists finishing the concert by a masterful performance of Great is Thy Faithfulness and Dear Lord and Father of Mankind. This lovely event, although mainly instrumental had an intention of bringing the work and word of God alive through the gift of music - here it must be said the "rock" on which the concert was built was the expertise of the pianist playing the digital piano.

The concert will be remembered as not only a musical experience, but a spiritual confirmation that God is very much at work in The Way of Hope Foundation in Hungary and the Canaan Christian Centre in Sheringham. Terry Keeler

Christmas Pet Care

have a fun festive season without having to rush to the vets!

• NEVER give dogs human chocolate. It contains an ingredient called Theobromine, which is toxic to dogs. Some dogs are crafty and will help themselves to chocolates hanging from the tree or unwrap themselves a selection box, if they do you need to contact us for advice. • If you buy toys for your pets as Christmas presents, make sure they are suitable ones, some are easily destroyed and parts can be taken off & swallowed whole. Also ensure that cats don’t play with baubles and tinsel hanging from your tree. • Christmas tree lights can be dangerous. If the wires are chewed your pet will be at risk from an electric shock. • Try and avoid giving your pets too many food treats, especially if your pets are not used to it, the last thing you want is for them to have vomiting and diarrhoea. • Do not give bones as chews; they can get stuck in your dog’s digestive system (giving us no option but to operate to remove them)

Have a look in our shop for some suitable pet toys and treats To celebrate the 1st birthday of our Sheringham surgery on 4th December, we are offering 10% off everything bought in the shop on that day.

On Friday 7th November our much loved tabby cat, Spike failed to return home for his supper. We have not seen him since earlier in the day.

If anyone has spotted a tabby cat looking a bit lost in the Bernard Road area of Cromer or beyond, please get in touch. Our house is so quiet without him – he is very vocal and affectionate and we desperately want him home.

SHERINGHAM & CROMER LIONS

On the 24th October 2104 the Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club were one year old. On this date we received our Charter which meant that we could operate as a self-sufficient club. Up until this date we were a branch club of the Taverham & District Lions Club.

When we are out collecting for our charity or at fetes, etc., with our Tombola Stall, etc., there are two questions that we are often asked: Who are the Lions? What do Lions do? Well I hope that the following will answer these questions.

Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organisation with over 1.5 million members, active in almost 44,000 communities around the world. Lions are dedicated to selfless, effective service to answer the needs that challenge local communities.

Lions are ordinary people who do amazing things. They are men and women who volunteer their time to humanitarian causes in their local and global communities. In the

British Isles and Ireland and the rest of Europe Lions donate around 5.7 million hours and 88 million pounds to humanitarian causes each year.

As a volunteer organisation, when a pound is raised by Lions Clubs it goes directly to charity. All administration costs are met by members.

Since the Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club was first formed as a branch club of the Taverham & District Lions Club in 2011 it has raised approx ÂŁ 9,000 which has been donated to organisions including:â– East Anglian Air Ambulance.

â– Sheringham Woodfields School

â– Sheringham Health Centre for specialist equipment.

â– Walcott, Bacton & Happisburgh Flood appeal.

â– A bed for a baby boy with serious medical problems.overs etc. for specialised pushchair for a baby girl with serious medical problems.

Overstrand Evening WI

Unfortunately our October speaker had to cancel, but Alistair Murphy from Cromer Museum kindly stepped into the breach and gave us a talk on ‘Cromer Personalities’. He started in the 1800s and, with the aid of projected photographs, talked about notables, dignitaries, fishing families and working people in general. Informative and amusing, we all enjoyed Alistair’s talk and learnt more about our local history.

Our President and Secretary thanked the Quiz team for representing us in the Brass Tray Quiz, as well as members who administered the quiz and provided refreshments. During the rest of the meeting, nominations were taken for next year’s Committee and details for our Christmas lunch which will be at Northrepps Cottage were provided.

We took our final walk of the year on 17 October. Members met at Blickling Hall for a walk round the grounds followed by refreshments and an opportunity to visit the craft exhibition and sale at the Hall. We welcome visitors and prospective new members (you don’t have to be an Overstrand resident to join us) to our walks and monthly meetings. Our meetings are on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall, Overstrand.

■Nelson’s Journey (a Norfolk charity for bereaved children).

We have also made various other smaller donations.

Our fundraising as mentioned above is through street collections, Tombola Stall and other game stalls @ local fetes etc. We also hold Quiz & Chips evenings.

Being a Lion is not all work. We do have a very active social life as well. Over the years we have visited local breweries, Archant Press, theatres, the house and workrooms of the late Wing Commander Ken Wallis (inventor of the Autogyro), had carpet bowls evenings and darts evenings.

I hope this has answered those questions often raised but if you would like to know more or even come along to a meeting please contact Lions Brian or Hazel Harris on 01263 821276 email brihaz@btinternet.com

Sheringham Christmas Tree Festival

St. Andrews Methodist Churh Sheringham extends a warm invitation to enjoy the atmosphere in your build up to Christmas by visiting Sheringham’s 5th Charity Christmas Tree Festival which will take place from Thursday 11 December to Wednesday 16 December.

Organised jointly by St Andrew’s and St. Peter’s Parish Church the festival is a major event for Sheringham and provides a spectacular spiritual platform for charities to raise funds by attracting donations from visitors. Last year’s event was held at St. Peter’s and raised over £6,000 for the 41 charities that took part. This year, again, over 40 local and national charities will be

represented. Each charity will decorate its tree in an imaginative way that will uniquely portray the charities aims. There will also be a prayer tree where visitors will be able to write a prayer and display it on the tree and to add to the ambiance the magical displays will be supported by a background of seasonal music.

After seeing the trees, visitors will also be able to buy last minute Christmas gifts from an abundance of stalls organised by the participating charities. There will also be a special craft section for children to take an active part in the festival while parents enjoy a cup of tea and light refreshments that will be available throughout.

Be Part of Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2015 One of the most successful Open Studios schemes in the country has announced its dates for 2015 and artists can now apply to take part. The Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios (NNOS) scheme is a 16-day county-wide celebration and a key event in Norfolk’s visual arts calendar.

Annually drawing visitors in excess of 32,000 the scheme, which was established in 1994, is run by the Norfolk & Norwich Festival in collaboration with local artists. Each year hundreds of artists across the region invite the public into their private studios to reveal where and how they work.

Norfolk & Norwich Festival artistic director William Galinsky said “The Festival is proud that the Open Studios scheme works with so many talented artists in a part of the world that has long and also for visitors to see artwork as it happens away from the traditional gallery spaces. Following on from last year’s record year, with the continued support of Wex Photographic, we hope to attract even more visitors in 2015.”

Artist Elizabeth Potter who creates three dimensional sculpture exhibited her work as part of the 2014 Open Studios scheme from her workplace in Saxthorpe, north Norfolk. She said “I enjoyed my first Open Studios experience, met lots of lovely people, other artists and made contacts.”

This year’s Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios grew with a record 585 artists and 480 school children participating across 272 venues. Art lovers and curious first timers alike were attracted to the scheme with 20 Art Trails and countless demonstrations, events and workshops by participating artists.

Emma van Deventner, Events Manager at Wex Photographic said “Wex Photographic is very proud to be supporting the unique NNOS programme again in 2015. We were delighted with its success last year and we are excited to be working alongside the Festival team to further raise the profile of this important and diverse event. We are all about supporting the artist and we cannot think of a better way to do so than in our home county through NNOS.”

Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2015 will take place between 23 May and 7 June 2015.

Nigel Barnett at work in his studio

Research by the scheme’s organisers has shown that on average each participating artist or collective received around 120 visitors. In addition, half of visitors this year ate out at a local restaurant or cafe as part of their Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios experience and 38% also visited local shops.

Following a hugely successful inaugural sponsorship in 2014, Norwich based company Wex Photographic will be supporting the scheme again in 2015.

Artists wanting to take part can apply online at www.nnopenstudios.org.uk. The cost for inclusion in the scheme is £100 for individual artists and £280 for groups of artists and includes a listing in the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios brochure with a print run of 35,000.

Artists will also receive a listing on the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios website, posters, postcards and the opportunity to take part in the high profile Central Taster Exhibition at The Forum in Norwich in April 2015. The deadline for 2015 applications is Friday 5 December 2014.

For more information please visit www.nnopenstudios.org.uk, email nnopenstudios@nnfestival.org.uk or call Ros Dixon on 01603 877762.

The Rose Bower by Joy Hodge

Local author Joy Hodge has written a collection of a dozen rose-themed short stories entitled The Rose Bower which have been developed from homework assignments from a creative writing course she attended.

The stories range in time from the 18th century to the present day and the settings include grand 18th century houses, modern offices and ordinary homes. There is a wedding, a suicide and a death by drowning. Roses grown for both commemorative and national exhibition purposes are featured. The stories include a rose treasured by a soldier through his service in the Second World War and new beginnings for a wife in the aftermath of the loss of her husband. In contrast the goings on at a Garden Club and the conflict of a gardener who wants to decimate his wife’s beloved rose offer a counterpoint of humour. Nostalgia for the rosebuds of childhood is revealed and there is a final waft of the scent of roses from beyond the grave.

The book is available from Jarrolds of Cromer, Watts of Sheringham and The Holt Bookshop.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER WHEN AUTUMN LEAVES START TO FALL

contaminated with litter and rubbish and chemical pollutants.

Everyone has heard the apologies for railway delays due to ‘leaves on the line’ but how do small things like leaves manage to hold up a modern train? Well it seems that when leaves fall on the line, particularly in damp or wet weather, the rolling action of passing wheels compress them, causing a greasy mulch to cover the rails.

This mulch is to railways what ice is to roads. It reduces the adhesion between wheel and rail and acceleration must be reduced to prevent slipping and braking distances extended thereby causing delays.

Leaves are therefore obviously tough and as gardeners we should bear this in mind when making our own leaf mould which is so useful in the garden. The best quality leaf mould is made from the leaves of oak, beech or hornbeam which decompose quite quickly but all leaves and even conifer needles will eventually break down. Thick leaves like sycamore, walnut, horse chestnut and sweet chestnut need to be shredded before they are added to the pile. Evergreens such as holly and laurel are better shredded and added to the compost heap where they will break down eventually rather than being added to the leaf mould pile.

There are potential problems to watch out for. Leaf mould can become infested with weeds, so use the resulting product cautiously, avoiding formal areas of the garden where weeds would be a serious problem. Street leaves are best avoided as they may be

There are several ways of creating leaf mould but whatever your method it is important to keep the leaves moist: • For the Lazy Gardener. Pile leaves in a sheltered inconspicuous part of your garden and leave them to rot for two years. Alternatively fill black plastic sacks with leaves, perforate the sacks with a knife or garden fork, tie the top loosely and store them out of sight for a couple of years. • For the keen gardener. Build a cage of stakes and chicken wire to contain your leaves and stop them from blowing away. Decomposition can be accelerated by turning the heap at intervals and also by running the lawn mower over the pile a few times. Grass cuttings can be added to the rotting leaves to add to the nutrient value

Leaf mould can be used in many ways: • Peat substitute. Use leaf mould in place of peat because it has similar qualities and it is a renewable resource • Moisture retaining mulch. Leaf mould can hold up to 500 times its own weight in water. Place it around, but not touching, the crowns of annuals, perennials and vegetables to help them maintain moisture during summer. • Soil conditioner. It is easier for roots to penetrate soil and take up nutrients when the soil is not too dense. Research

As a postscript to my previous articles on the anniversary of the First World War I have found a little piece about the building of the Cenotaph in Whitehall, which is the centrepiece of the annual Remembrance Sunday parade. It seems that small shrines decorated with flowers began to appear in the streets of the East End of London from the summer of 1916, while similar private shrines were made in thousands of homes in the absence of the bodies of loved ones. In August 1918, 100,000 people laid flowers at a memorial shrine in Hyde Park. Intended as a temporary structure, it remained in place for more than a year and led to the building of the Cenotaph. The installation of poppies at the Tower of London seems to have had the same effect on the public with the calls for them to be displayed for a longer period. Bob Wilkinson

A Very Merry Christmas at Sheringham Little Theatre

A veritable feast of pantomime fun is being served up at Sheringham Little Theatre this festive season when Robin Hood is joined by the Babes in the Wood.

faces; much-loved panto dame Russel Hicken will return in all his vibrant glory in the role of Nanny Polly Tix.

West End star Killian Donnelly has written a special seasonal show for the coastal venue, which brings the classic tale of the Merry Men together with an old Norfolk yarn.

Robin Hood, which also features a number of modern twists, runs from Tuesday 9 December until Saturday 3 January and promises to be a colourful and lively show, with plenty for adults as well as children.

“We are so excited to be working with Killian again this year,” said Debbie Thompson, director of the Little Theatre. “This is a completely new script, which will be just as much fun as Snow White was last year.

“Killian has written it to ensure we have been able to include lots of young people this year and of, course, by incorporating the home-grown story of Babes in the Wood too we know there will be plenty of local interest.” Wayland Wood, near Watton, is, of course, supposed to be where a young brother and sister were abandoned by their evil uncle centuries ago. In Killian’s tale, the uncle is the

Sheriff of Rottingham and the babes are Jack and Jill.

Callum Crowe, nine, from Bignold Primary School, in Norwich, plays Jack in the panto. “I think it is going to be a good story,” he said. “I was in Snow White last year and I am really pleased to be in Robin Hood too.”

Penny Othon, 10, from Sheringham Primary School, won the role of Jill after auditioning at the theatre. “My eyes lit up when I heard I’d been given the part – I love singing and dancing so much and being in a pantomime is especially good fun because all the characters are so funny,” she said.

The pantomime will feature new and familiar

“The main cast is, of course, professional and we are thrilled that this year they will be joined by so many Norfolk children,” Debbie said.

“We can’t wait for the curtain to go up on Robin Hood – we know it will be such fun and that everyone who comes will enjoy it immensely and leave with some great seasonal memories.”

Woodland Trust Chief Executive visits Pretty Corner Woods

Glyn Williams, North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services and Nick Baker, NNDC Strategic Director, welcomed Beccy Speight, Chief Executive, Sue Roe, Ambassador and Mike Ryder, Site Manager, of the Woodland Trust, to Pretty Corner Woods, near Sheringham, on 29 October.

Pretty Corner Woods (30.3Ha) is owned by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), while the Woodland Trust (WT) own and manage 32.2Ha of woodland to the south east, known as Old Wood. A further 10.0Ha of woodland to the north east, sold to Sheringham Town Council by Anglian Water in 2006, is leased to the WT and is included within their management operations.

A network of paths provides walks with spectacular views over Sheringham and the coast, and easy access paths are available for people seeking less strenuous walks. The woods provide a home for a wide range of native wildlife and depending on the season visitors can expect to see birds such as buzzard, nuthatch and gold crest. Butterflies are numerous, especially the comma, gatekeeper and white admiral. Even glow worms can sometimes be seen at night in the more open areas.

FreeAds

For the past three years NNDC has been contracted by WT to undertake site management work on the WT part of the woods alongside its own area. Since 2011, 30th major improvements have been undertaken, including path and ride maintenance, steps, fence construction and the clearance of invasive vegetation as well as resurfacing to the public car parks, path improvements, boardwalks to improve access, and clear markers and interpretation panels.

The total cost of the scheme was ÂŁ186,000 and funding was successfully secured by WT from the Forestry Commission Woodland Improvement Grant, Heritage Lottery Fund, Leader and the Woodland Trust Legacy Fund with NNDC providing contributions in kind. WT intend to expand this programme in conjunction with NNDC in 2015.

WT Chief Executive Beccy Speight was visiting the site to look at the management

regime being operated by NNDC over the whole area and to discuss the excellent progress with NNDC Officers and Members.

For the past three years WT and NNDC staff have jointly staged a Summer Fair. In 2012 it attracted 700 visitors; in 2013 it attracted 1200 visitors, with 1600 in 2014. This event has consistently been the best attended event that the NNDC Countryside and Parks Team offer and it is to be repeated again in 2015.

Beccy Speight, Woodland Trust Chief Executive, said: “I was delighted to see first-hand the results of such a successful partnership with a local authority; which has enabled great conservation work and a wonderful visitor experience to exist side by side.

Glyn Williams, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said: “I am extremely proud of the work that the countryside rangers undertake at Green Flag award winning Pretty Corner Woods. Working so successfully with the Woodland Trust has seen the Woods go from strength to strength making them an even better place for wildlife and people to visit.

Wit and Whimsy with a Wallop!

Cromer-based writer broadcaster and entertainer Keith Skipper has launched book number 38 off his local production line.

Norfolk in a Nutshell is already receiving warm praise for summing up the county’s special qualities and good reasons for protecting them.

Rural sage Granny Biffin lauds this “totally unfashionable attempt to be brutally honest and straightforward about a blessed plot subjected to wild rumours and extreme verdicts.”

Features include The Norfolk Character Test, the real truth about how Norfolk got its name and a spotlight on the ancient local art of bike-holding. Key questions posed include... Is Norfolk ready for independence? and Have you ever been treated for Suffin’ Gorn Abowt?

MP PRESENTS CHEQUES TO LOCAL HEALTH CHARITIES AFTER FUNDRAISING CYCLE RIDE

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb went to Cromer Hospital to present a cheque following his 100 mile fundraising bike ride in September. The money raised was put towards the purchasing of a new ophthalmology laser, enabling more patients to receive specialist eye treatment locally. Norman Lamb said, "It is a pleasure to be able to present cheques to the charities and hospitals we raised money for in September. It was good that we were able to support the acquisition of the new laser for Cromer Hospital which will provide new ophthalmological services for North Norfolk residents. Seeing the money put to good use makes everyone’s effort seem absolutely worthwhile.” Over the next few days Norman Lamb will be visiting other hospitals and charities across the constituency to present their cheques with two other presentations today, one at Kelling Hospital, the other at Wells.

Iain MacKechnie Jarvis, Chair of Wells Community Hospital Trust, said, "We are so delighted that Norman Lamb included us in the charities he was supporting on his sponsored cycle ride. The money he has raised for us will go towards the purchase of a new renal dialysis machine for our Renal Unit which provides vital holiday respite treatment for those needing regular renal dialysis." Over 100 sponsorship cheques have been received and further donations have been made online. The total of donations received will be worth over £7,200 to local charities.

Meeting of The Strand Club on 12th November

We welcomed five visitors to our meeting today who brought those present to a total of 22 ladies. There were apologies received from Jean, Pam and Mavis.

After the reading of the minutes of the last meeting a form was circulated for members to note down their contributions for our December Christmas Tea when Rosemary Curtis and her choir will be entertaining us. Josie then collected monies and menu choices for the festive lunch in January at the Foundry Arms in Northrepps.

CROMER GIFT SHOP

Our speaker Cherry Farrow then began a presentation containing endearing photographs of the many rescued pets she and her family have taken in over the years. She and her daughter Ellie also mentioned other animals which had been saved from slaughter or ill-treatment and talked of the reasons for creatures great and small to be taken in by Hillside. They brought along for us to admire a baby hedgehog found sitting by his dead mother at a roadside, a bantam who had stopped laying only to begin again in her new home and a pigeon with only half a beak. Cherry and Ellie had laid out several stalls with items for sale. There was some very pretty jewellery which Cherry had made and some gorgeous iced muffins which Ellie had obviously spent ages producing, plus many other interesting and varied things.

Viv gave a vote of thanks and then our tea hostesses for the meeting, Kay and June, made our much needed refreshments. The meeting closed at 3.50.

Visitors are always welcome at our meetings but the December and January ones are for members only. However in February, Lauren will be talking about the history of the Women's League of Health and Beauty and everyone is welcome to that. North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) Cabinet has approved proposals to introduce ‘mini-stay’ free spaces and to remove evening charges from its car parks from Friday 14 November.

Following recommendations earlier this year, the council was required to undertake a consultation process on the proposals. No objections were received and now the necessary changes can be made to the district’s Car Parking Orders.

To enable residents to ‘pop’ into their local town centre, from 14 November three free 30 minute parking spaces will be provided at Sheringham (Morris Street), Cromer (The Meadow), Fakenham (Bridge Street), Stalham (High Street), North Walsham (Bank Loke), Holt (Albert Street) and Wells-next-the-Sea (Staithe Street) car parks. These locations cover the district’s seven main towns and these car parks were selected as providing the best town centre locations.

The decision to remove the current evening car parking charges (from 6pm to 11pm) was made following representations from town councils and business organisations. From 14 November parking on all NNDC car parks will be free from 6pm.

Rhodri Oliver, NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Assets, said “we listen carefully to what our residents and community organisations say to us, and if we can respond positively then we will. I am very pleased that we have found a way to provide a number of free spaces in our seven main town centre car parks and to remove the evening charge.

“Car parking charges will never be welcome, but they do form a significant part of the council’s annual income. Much of the car park income comes from the summer visitors who make use of North Norfolk’s facilities and the rest comes from residents who actually use the car parks. Without this income we would be unable to provide many of our valuable and important services such as leisure facilities, public lavatories and tourist information services.”

Santa’s coming to CAS

We at C.A.S. Travel, Sheringham are running for the second year our very successful Santa’s Sleigh Appeal.

We will be having a Santa’s Sleigh in our branch between 20th November and the 18th December and are hoping to fill the sleigh with lots of lovely toys and goodies which will then be presented to Break Charity on the 19th December. Break Charity will then distribute the gifts to the vulnerable children, families and young people they work with.

We would be so grateful if you would be able to help us with this worthy cause and donate a small gift, child’s book or toy, unwrapped from a baby to a teenager. All we ask, is that you pop it into the branch unwrapped by the 18th December.

We really hope this year’s appeal will be even more successful than last year and we can make this Christmas an extra special one and put a smile on the faces of local children and families supported by Break. Thank you in advance for your support. With kind regards, Nina and the team, C.A.S. Travel, Sheringham.

Council set to review polling districts and polling places

North Norfolk District Council is to embark on a four yearly review of its polling districts and places, to make sure voting is convenient for people and polling stations are up to the job.

The review will look at whether communities are properly served by the places and facilities chosen for polling at election times; and will take in to consideration how a sparsely-populated rural area can sometimes pose challenges.

The Review of Polling District and Polling Places will look at populations and facilities to see whether any changes can, or should, be made and whether new locations and more appropriate locations have become available. The review must be completed before 31 January 2015. A consultation is now open until 8 December 2014, giving people a chance to suggest new places for polling stations, or comment on the suitability and accessibility of existing ones. To respond to the

consultation, write to Suzanne Taylor, Electoral Services Manager, North Norfolk District Council, Holt Road, Cromer, Norfolk, NR27 9EN, or send an email to elections@north-norfolk.gov.uk

Consultation responses will be made public as part of the final review report.

North Norfolk District Council’s Returning Officer, Sheila Oxtoby, said “The review will make sure North Norfolk’s polling stations are as convenient and accessible as possible, which includes looking at access for disabled people.

“We would like to hear from people who have had difficulties with particular polling stations in the past, so we can try to address these problems, or look for different locations; however, we have to be realistic as in some rural areas choices are very limited.”

Norman Lamb welcomes local plan to improve care and reduce hospital visits

NHS England recently approved a local plan to use part of the Government’s national £5.3 billion Better Care Fund to improve care for the elderly and those with complex health needs in Norfolk and reduce hospital admissions.

In Norfolk, health and care organisations are investing £56m in delivering better care. They aim to reduce hospital admission in this area by 3.5%, saving £4.9m to be re-invested in local health and care services.

These local plans are at the heart of the Liberal Democrats’ plan to join up care in local communities, enabling doctors, nurses and carers to work together to support some of the most vulnerable people in society, including

the elderly, and those with complex long term conditions.

North Norfolk MP and Liberal Democrat Health Minister Norman Lamb said “Currently, as a patient you have to negotiate a bewildering array of different organisations to access the care or treatment you need. All too often people can fall through the gaps, ending up in A&E because of uncoordinated care. The Liberal Democrats want to join up different services around the needs of the individual, so health and care organisations work together to provide the best possible care. This approach will help deliver value for money, so that our NHS and care system are protected for the future. But it is also about building a fairer

In association with www.cromerdeals.co.uk

society - providing dignity to the vulnerable, and making sure people have the support to live their lives to the full.”

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said “This approach will transform the lives of some of the most vulnerable in society. By getting local health and care teams working together to focus on prevention, we can stop families and the NHS from having to pay the price of unnecessary breakdowns in care. The Liberal Democrats are committed to joining up the whole health and care budget in the next Parliament, joining up the whole system around the needs of individual patients. Our health and care services have an essential role to play in giving everyone a fair chance in life."

Cromer welcomes everyone, especially walkers

Seven months of hard work paid off in August, when Cromer was given accreditation as a Walkers are Welcome town.

Walkers are Welcome is a nationwide initiative launched in 2007 to encourage towns and villages to be ‘welcoming to walkers’. The network has expanded rapidly and there are now over 100 locations across the UK that have joined this innovative community led scheme to benefit from Walkers are Welcome accreditation.

Don Davenport, who has been coordinating the efforts in Cromer said “I enjoy walking around Cromer and want to share my passion with others getting Cromer recognised as a centre for walking is an excellent starting point to develop walking as a healthy activity around the area, and encourage people to visit Cromer as a centre for walking”.
